YCCD Tree Seedling Sale To Support Educational Efforts

Currently Hiring For The Following Positions:

York County residents are invited to participate in the 46th annual York County Conservation District (YCCD) tree seedling sale on Thursday, April 16, at Rocky Ridge County Park, 3699 Deininger Road, York.

Each year, more than 20,000 seedlings are sold and planted in York County and surrounding areas. Featured this year will be numerous seedlings native to the area, as well as a variety of fruit-bearing shrubs and trees, such as apple and pear trees. At the sale, one free blue spruce or white pine seedling will be handed out per person to attendees who bring the required coupon.

To view the descriptions of the seedlings and trees that will be available, place an order, and print a coupon for a free seedling, readers may visit www.yorkccd.org.

Orders will be accepted through Monday, March 23. Orders will be available for pickup at Rocky Ridge County Park between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on April 16. Walk-in sales will also be available on pickup day at Rocky Ridge County Park while supplies last.

Community REACH, in partnership with the York County Literacy Council, will offer its third week of free high school equivalency classes on March 17 and Wednesday, March 18, from 1 to 3 p.m.

On Wednesday, March 18, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Community REACH will host a cooking and nutrition class in conjunction with Penn State Extension’s Nutrition Links program.

On Thursday, March 19, from 10 to 11 a.m., instructor Jill Kaylor, Visiting Angels and Dementia Friend champion, will present “Become a Dementia Friend.”

Participants will learn about dementia. Dementia Friends give people an understanding of dementia and small things they can do to make a difference.

Tutors Lynda Howell and Steve Smith will conduct high school equivalency tutoring on March 19 from 1 to 2:15 p.m.

The tutoring session is for students registered in the York Literacy Council/Community REACH high school equivalency class. Group and individual instruction will be provided.

Also on March 19, from 2 to 3 p.m., instructor Sam Neff will conduct the “Computers and Technology” class. This class will be for beginners and experienced users. Beginners will cover the following topics: using a mouse to choose items on the screen, getting familiar with the desktop of a Chromebook, using Google Chrome to navigate the internet, using Google Docs to create documents, filling in forms such as job applications on the internet, and using email. People with computer experience are welcome to join the class to use the Chromebooks and

YorVoice Competition Scheduled The Cultural Alliance of York County will host its sixth annual singing competition, YorVoice, on Saturday, March 21, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Strand Theatre at the Appell Center for Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. The friendly competition will bring the community together for a night filled with musicians.

In the 2019 competition, York College Rock Band took home the title of Live Band Champion, while solo musician Jess Pastelak was awarded Vocal Champion.

Back to perform this year are the 2019 runner-up, Jennie Parker, and 2019 People’s Choice Award winner, Teagan Tatcher.

Chris Garrett of WPMT FOX 43 will again be the master of

ceremonies. The event will feature live performances by house band Boompop Coalition.

York Habitat for Humanity

The York County History Center will offer various upcoming programs. The events are free and open to the public and will take place at the center, 250 E. Market St., York. For additional details, readers may visit www.yorkhistorycenter.org.

Second Saturday events on March 14 will include a 10:30 a.m. lecture on the Ski Roundtop story, presented by president Scott Romberger and founder Irvin Naylor. There will also be a family activity, “Quilting in York,” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Attendees will learn why quilting was so important to people living in York County during the 1800s, and they will look at some quilts from the museum collection that

are newly on display. Children can design their own quilt squares using paper.

York Academy Regional Charter School recently hosted representatives from the U.S. Department of Education, York County president commissioner Julie Wheeler and Andrew Ramos from the office of Sen. Pat Toomey.

CEO Angela Sugarek led the group on a tour of the Upper School and provided an overview of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and its programs. The visit ended in a discussion with students. Aimee Viana, principal deputy assistant secretary, Department of Education, was interested in learning what the students like most about York Academy and hearing how the IB makes them rethink education.

The students shared their opinions freely.

The York Academy Regional Charter School is a nonprofit, tuition-free public charter school that educates more than 850 students via the International Baccalaureate curriculum.

In addition to academics, it

offers art, music, science and design/engineering programming within a small-school environment. Founded in 2011, the school is chartered by Central York, York City and York Suburban school districts. Students from 11 other districts also attend. Currently, it serves

students in kindergarten through 10th grade. Each year a grade level will be added until the school is fully for kindergarten through 12th-grade students in August 2021.

It is a designated evidenced-based program that is intended to significantly improve the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition. The York Revolution recently announced that the Community Progress Council (CPC) has partnered with the team for the 2020 York Revolution season.

The CPC is York County’s community action agency that empowers individuals and families to move toward self-sufficiency and advocates for change to promote community growth.

The sponsorship agreement makes CPC the beneficiary of the team’s nightly 50/50 charity giveaway and a fundraiser to be conducted during one of the Revolution’s home games.

United Way of Pennsylvania (UWP) presented its highest annual award, the Keystone Spirit of United Way Award, to York County resident Robert W. Pullo at a celebration hosted by United Way of York County on Feb. 6.

The Keystone Spirit of United Way Award was created by the United Way of Pennsylvania to recognize exceptional and sustained volunteer and philanthropic leadership. The criteria for selection of an honoree include a philanthropic impact and personal commitment of time and talents reaching across community borders to highlight the interdependence and opportunities of the United Way network across Pennsylvania. The winner shows exceptional and sustained engagement with United Way in his or her own community; personal commitment to the voluntary system of human services as demonstrated by gifts of time and financial resources, with United Way being the main focus of his or her efforts; and a quality of performance that inspires others to serve.

The Pullos are the first members of the Million Dollar Roundtable through a $1 million gift in 2002, the largest gift received to date by United Way of York County. They were named 2009 Philanthropists of the Year by Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

In 2018, alumni of the York Federal Fellows, a nonprofit leadership program founded by Pullo in 2006, launched Give Local York, a one-day “big give” fundraising event to benefit nonprofit organizations throughout York County. The event raised more than $3 million in 2019, with more than 300 nonprofits benefitting.

Originally from Somerville, Mass., Pullo resides in York with Donna. They have four children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The Cultural Alliance of York County elected four new board officers as well as a new executive committee at the December 2019 board of directors meeting.

The 2020 executive committee consists of Bill Yanavitch, chair; Jared Bean, chair-elect and campaign co-chair; Tony Campisi, past chair and fund development committee chair; Suzanne Becker, secretary; Erin Casey McGlaughlin, treasurer; and Jim Fowler, allocations chair and campaign co-chair.

The new board directors are Aaron Bowers, Ophelia Chambliss, Vicki Karandrikas, and Bryan Tate.

Bowers currently holds the position of area manager/senior vice president for PNC Bank. He has been with PNC for 23 years with assignments in Wilmington, Del.; Chicago; and now central Pennsylvania. Bowers is a former board member of Easter Seals of Joliet, Ill., and received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Wesley College in Dover, Del. Bowers; his wife, Donnielle Bowers;

and their three daughters currently reside in York.

Board director Chambliss, originally from Chicago, currently resides in York. She has been working as a fine artist for several years, has participated in a number of juried shows, and has successfully completed various large-scale and permanent art installations. Chambliss has a Bachelor of Arts in communication from Penn State University, as well as a Master of Arts in communications from Penn State University Capitol Campus.

She is an adjunct faculty member with York College of Pennsylvania and Penn State York. She has worked with the York County History Center, the Cultural Alliance, and other organizations and nonprofits throughout York County to build community, change the narrative about culture and race, and create a more inclusive social fabric.

Karandrikas is an energy and utility attorney in the York office of McNees Wallace & Nurick. She is a member of the York and

Dauphin County Bar Associations. She has served as the chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Public Utilities Law Section and as chair of the Energy Bar Association’s State Commission Practice Committee. Karandrikas is also a member of McNees’ Pro Bono Committee. She has volunteered on the Cultural Alliance’s Grant Allocation Committee as well as the Anniversary Gala Planning Committee. She is also a member of the Rotary Club of York. She; her husband, Garrett; and their daughter, Anna, live in York.

Tate is a York native and the newly elected register of wills and clerk of the Orphans’ Court for York County. Previously, he served for 14 years as vice president at York County Community Foundation and for 12 years as chief of staff to former Congressman Todd Platts, who represented York County and southcentral Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is immediate past president and a multiple Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary

Club of York, president of the board of the Miss Pennsylvania Scholarship Foundation, founder of the Spring Grove Alumni Chorus, and master of ceremonies of Encore, the York County High School Musical Theater Awards.

The Cultural Alliance was founded as a United Arts Fund in 1999. Its annual campaign currently supports eight partner agencies that are essential to arts and culture in the community, and over the last 20 years the Cultural Alliance has invested more than $10.4 million in financial support and $2.2 million in in-kind support for the arts.

Under its new, more inclusive and diverse operating model, the Cultural Alliance intends to expand its funding to further grow and strengthen arts and culture in York County.

York County Hires New Fieldhouse Speaks At Rotary Meeting 911 Director The York County commissioners have hired Matthew Hobson to be the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 911 director.

His first day was Feb. 10.

Hobson comes to York County 911 with broad experience in the public safety and emergency response community. He most recently worked as executive director of New River Valley Emergency Communications Regional Authority in Christiansburg, Va. There, he managed a newly consolidated emergency communications center.

Prior to his position in Virginia, Hobson had a six-year tenure with East Baton Rouge Parish in Louisiana, where he was the manager of the parishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s communications district that handled

Hobson has experience enhancing performance through the deployment of technology, including a computer-aided dispatch replacement among other robust system upgrades that affected multiple agencies. He has overseen the introduction of emergency medical dispatch into 911 centers that have never had it before.

Hobson said he intends to improve operations at York County 911, recognizing that there is a broad range of needs for the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emergency response agencies. He plans to first work with 911 staff and responders to build relationships.

As part of their effort to enhance the relationship between York County 911 and the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emergency responders, the commissioners have revamped the York County Public Safety Advisory Board as a multidisciplinary body to provide insights and information regarding 911.

The search committee that chose Hobson included York County 911 employees as well as representatives from the local police, fire and EMS communities.
