Sportsman’s Banquet Scheduled Christ United Methodist Church, 5 Main St., Yorkana, will host a Sportsman’s Banquet on Saturday, March 14, from 3 to 8 p.m. The catered dinner will feature roast beef, filling, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, coleslaw, wild game entrees, and dessert.

The guest speaker will be brothers Mark and Dan Witt, co-authors of “Mistaken Identity.” In addition to dinner and the speakers, the event will include giveaways of a gift

certificate to Hake’s Sporting Goods, a tree stand and a guided bird hunt.

The church will also host its next all-you-can-eat Seafood Fest on Saturday, March 21.

Dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. The menu will include steamed and fried shrimp, shrimp chowder, oyster stew,

fried oysters, fried haddock, clam strips, baked flounder, chicken fingers, french fries, coleslaw, dessert and a beverage.

Takeout meals will also be available. The meal will be prepared and served by Big Bob’s BBQ. Tickets will be discounted for children ages 6 to 12. Children age 5 and under may eat for free.

The third in the Nutrition Links series of cooking and nutrition classes, offered in conjunction with Penn State Extension, will be held on March 11 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Classes, which will also meet on Wednesdays, March 18 and 25, are being led by Terri Rentzel, Penn State Extension nutrition education adviser. Students will receive free lessons with activities as they learn how to eat healthy on a limited budget; cook low-cost, fast and easy meals; and keep food safe to eat. They will sample new healthy foods, receive weekly incentives and earn a free slow cooker upon completion of the program. Individuals may attend the free class if they are a parent or caregiver of a child under age 20 who qualifies for free or reduced-cost school lunches, WIC, SNAP benefits, food pantry items or Pennsylvania Farmers Market Vouchers.

On Thursday, March 12, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Albert Storm will offer an English Language Learning class. Small group and individual instruction will be

provided for English language learners of all levels. New students are accepted at any time. A door prize will be provided.

Also on March 12, from 10 to 11 a.m., Beth Miller, a nurse with OSS Health at Home, will present the session “Stroke: What You Need to Know.” A door prize will be offered.

Additionally on March 12, from 1 to 2:15 p.m., tutors Lynda Howell and Steve Smith will conduct high school equivalency tutoring. This tutoring session is for students registered in the York Literacy Council/Community REACH equivalency class.

Group and individual instruction will be provided.

A Computers and Technology class will be instructed by Sam Neff from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. on March 12. This class is suitable for beginners and experienced users. Beginners will cover a variety of introductory topics, and experienced users are invited to join the class to use Chromebooks for tasks they want to do with assistance from the instructor. A door prize will be given.

Open Gym For Children Set Grace Community Church hosts an open gym, called Oxygen, for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. On Wednesdays through May 20, children can expend extra energy, play

AAUW Branch Reineberg-Byrne Slates Program A program on “Harassment in the Workplace” will be hosted by the York Branch American Association of University Women (AAUW) during its meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10. The meeting will be held at York Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Road, York.

The featured speaker, Holly Morreels, is the Title IX coordinator at York College of Pennsylvania. During her presentation, Morreels will explain what qualifies as sexual and nonsexual harassment and retaliation in the workplace. She will provide examples of modern-day harassment.

The program pairs balanced teams with a game-time substitution rotation. This approach ensures every child gets to play, to start, and to receive the same amount of playing time each game. Each player is valued based on improvement.

Participants are asked to stop by the gym for an introduction and simple skills test. Deborah Dancy will present “Collision: A Conversation With the Artist” at 5:30 p.m. on March 12 in Marketview Arts, 37 W. Philadelphia St., York. Her exhibition “Collision” will be on display on the third floor of Marketview Arts until Saturday, March 14.

“Collision” combines three bodies of work; large, formally driven abstract paintings; small found objects modified to explore issues around race and power; and collaged works on paper that create a bridge between the paintings and objects, referencing both the mark-making of the paintings and the sociopolitical content of the objects.

Dancy’s work is featured in

many public and private collections, including the Baltimore Museum of Art and Detroit Institute of Arts. She is a Guggenheim Fellow and professor emeritus at the University of Connecticut.

York College. The exhibition will run from Friday, March 20, to Wednesday, April 8, in York College Galleries, Wolf Hall, located on the college campus, 441 Country Club Road, York. It will feature works of art and design identified by Levit (graphic design) and Dancy (fine art) as the strongest work entered by students in the fine art and graphic design classes.

Levit directed and produced “Graphic Means,” a featurelength documentary about the history of graphic design production after the letterpress. The film focuses on the phototypesetting era and the transition that occurred as a result of the digital revolution. “Graphic Means” will be screened at 7 p.m. on March 11 in DeMeester Recital Hall, Wolf Hall. A discussion with Levit will follow the film.

SCPGS To Host Genealogy Duo The South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society (SCPGS) will meet at York County History Center, 250 E. Market St., York, from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 8. Farley Named To Dean’s List Kalee Farley of York was named to the fall 2019 dean’s list at Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, Ill. To qualify for inclusion on the dean’s list, a student must have been enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student and must have attained a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.00 grading scale.

Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), a statewide public cyber charter school for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, recently announced that its Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) team of six students won this year’s statewide competition, marking the 10th consecutive year of CCA capturing the state title. The RWDC was created to help build the United States’ STEM workforce by providing high school students from across the country the opportunity to work on reallife engineering challenges in a collaborative, team environment.

The RWDC tasks students with a professional engineering challenge to design and implement unmanned aerial systems more commonly known as drones - that will help solve modern-day issues faced by global industries. The 2020 challenge required students to design a drone that could carry and deliver packages weighing up to 5 kilograms, make continuous deliveries through a neighborhood, and complete its route with at least 20 minutes of battery life remaining.

When designing its drone, the team had to consider a variety of challenges, including power management, weight, and design efficiency. All designs were required to include upward-facing rotors, effectively reducing the battery life of the drone. To overcome this issue, the CCA team designed a drone that takes off with rotors pointing upward, then switches to a hybrid airfoil for long-distance flight to conserve battery power.

CCA this year competed against student teams from schools across Pennsylvania. The students who were part of the CCA team include Alisher Aminov, grade 12, Lebanon; Bella Christianson, grade 10, Waynesboro; Kenya Mitchell, grade 12, Steelton; Luke Zimmerman, grade 10, Palmyra; Numayr McPhaul, grade 10, York; and Timothy Cribbs, grade 12, Camp Hill.

The team is currently preparing to represent Pennsylvania at the national competition on Saturday, April 25, in Washington, D.C. At the RWDC national competition in April, teams representing the U.S. and China will present their inventions to a panel of judges with careers in aerospace and defense. Since first participating in the national competition in 2008, the CCA team has twice finished in second place.

One hundred thirteen veterans of the World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Gulf War and War on Terror eras gathered at Northeastern High School for the 16th Honor Bus trip on Nov. 23, 2019.

The trip, offered as a token of gratitude for the veterans’ service, was sponsored by the Northeastern High School Honor Bus Project. This group of students escorts local veterans on all-expenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C., to visit the various memorials dedicated to their service. While in Washington in November, veterans also visited Arlington National Cemetery to witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. All participants received breakfast and a bag lunch as well as a banquet upon return to Northeastern High School.

Embroiderers Guild To Meet The Thimble and Thread Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America normally meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. at Faith United Church of Christ, 509 Pacific Ave., York. The group’s next meeting will be held on March 17, the third Tuesday, due to church activities on the second Tuesday. The April meeting will be held on the second Tuesday as usual.

Personal Safety Seminar Slated York County Sheriff’s Office will host Refuse to Be a Victim, a crime prevention and personal safety seminar, on Saturday, April 4, from noon to 4 p.m. The class will be offered at the Appell Center, 50 N. George St., York.

Attendees will learn how to create layers of safety in their life to protect themselves and their family. Attendees will get the tools to develop their own personal safety strategies, including information on the psychology of the criminal mind, mental preparedness, home and phone security, automobile

and travel security, and personal and technological security.

All registrants will receive a student handbook, supplement safety booklet, information brochure, and certificate of attendance.

Prior to joining MISS in 2019, she worked as a regional director of operations for Regis Corporation. In this role, she managed a territory of 60 salons with $15 million in annual sales. Farmer was responsible for leading a team of salon and district managers and managing overall finances and productivity of her portfolio.

Farmer was born in York and raised in Jacksonville, Fla. She currently resides in Wrightsville with her husband, Dave.

SUMC Table Tennis Club will host a non-sanctioned, roundrobin benefit table tennis tournament for beginners and intermediate skill levels of all ages on Saturday, March 14. The competition, the Pi Day Pingpong Tournament, will be held at the Stewartstown Recreation Building, Hopewell Recreation and Parks, 16 College Ave., Stewartstown.

Warmups before registration will be available at 8 a.m. Competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. Events will include singles and doubles in different divisions. Recreational players should register for a U-800 level event.

A nominal fee is required for participation, payable at the door. Trophies will be awarded to winners and runners up. Practice opportunities are available prior to the tournament at the above location on Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m.
