Maple Sugaring Days Scheduled Library To Host Folk Music Concert The York County Department of Parks and Recreation will host two Maple Sugar Festival days at Nixon County Park on Saturdays, Feb. 29 and March 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Interactive outdoor stations will teach the process of syrup making. Maple tastings, children’s crafts, a scavenger hunt and interpretive displays will be set up throughout the Nature Center, and maple products from Patterson Farms will be on sale. Visitors can experience demonstrations of the steps of maple syrup production at their own pace, learning all about maple sap and syrup from tree identification to historic boiling. Weather permitting, there will be a hike on the Bird Hollow

Trail to the new modern boiling station to see volunteers making maple syrup in real time. Attendees can follow a Maple Sugar Story Walk on the way back from the boiling station, complete the Bird Hollow loop and read a short children’s story about making maple syrup. The story will be laid out on posts along the trail. An admission cost has been set per person, with children age 5 and under and York County Park members admitted free. No individual preregistration is required, but groups of 10 or more should preregister at 717428-1961. For more information on this and other programs, readers may visit www.yorkcountyparks.org.

Food Pantry Sets Luncheon The WELL Food Pantry, located at the rear of Union Lutheran Church, off Mason Avenue in York, will hold a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the church on Wednesday, Feb. 26. The program will include a “lunch and learn opportunity for attendees, who will learn about the anticipated change to a full client choice food pantry, set to occur in March. The need for volunteers will continue with this change, as each client will be paired one on

one with a volunteer who can guide him or her through the pantry to shop. The pantry will continue its current offerings of personal care items, diapers, formula, and children’s snack bags. The WELL is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. by appointment and the second Saturday of the month for walkins. Readers may call 717-8527345 for information on becoming a client or a volunteer.

Basketball Tournament To Benefit Scholarship Fund The 22nd annual Eastern York Dollars for Scholars (EYDFS) 3on-3 basketball tournament is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 14, beginning at 8 a.m. Games will be held in the gymnasiums at both Eastern York High School (EYHS), 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville, and Eastern York Middle School, 746 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. Adults and youths in grades three through 12 are welcome to register for the tournament at www.eydfs.org/3on3bBasketball.aspx through Saturday, Feb. 29. Players must sign up in teams, and there is a set registration fee that includes a free tournament T-shirt for each player. After registering, each participant will receive an email requesting an approval of a waiver, which must be completed to play. Players under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian approve the waiver. The tournament will consist of adult divisions for men and women, as well as various divi-

sions for boys and girls in grades three through 12. All games will be refereed, and prizes will be awarded to winning teams in each division. Each team will be guaranteed a minimum of three games. Basketballs will be provided, and players are asked to refrain from bringing their own basketballs into the gyms. New basketballs will be supplied this year. Organizer Sherrie Snyder said that each year a survey is sent

out to participants after the tournament. Based on feedback from last year’s event - which had 98 teams competing - the men’s brackets have been revamped for 2020. “As before, we have men’s recreational and competitive, (and) we have added an over-30 bracket. All men on the team must be 30 or older to register for this level,” explained Snyder. “As our event has grown older, so have our players.” Outside food and coolers are

not permitted at the tournament. Walking tacos will be available to purchase. Funds raised at the tournament will help to provide scholarships to deserving graduating EYHS seniors in 2020. In addition to tournament participants, sponsors are also being sought. Sponsors are recognized on the tournament T-shirts. For details on sponsorship, interested individuals may email webmaster@eydfs.org.

College To Offer Master’s In Education With ABA Certification York College will be one of the few institutions in the region to offer a Master’s in Education with a certification in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) beginning in fall 2020. York College’s program, which was recently accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International, is unique in that it will be offered in part-time professional, fulltime professional, graduate dual degree “4+1” and continuing education formats concurrently. Molly Milam, assistant professor of education, explained that the program creates opportunities for first-time graduate degree seekers to earn their first degree, graduate degree holders to enhance their skills and earn a new credential in the certificate and professionals who currently hold the ABA certification to maintain their continuing education requirements. ABA is an evidence-based therapeutic approach to assessing and shifting human behavior

to help individuals develop and maintain their health, productivity and ultimately to enhance their contribution to society. ABA encompasses a broad range of mental health services in schools, agencies and businesses. Board certified behavior analysts (BCBA) are the practitioners tasked with investigating the relationships between an individual’s often maladaptive behaviors and their environment for the purpose of designing interventions grounded in behavior change theory. These interventions are intended to provide individuals with the necessary appropriate adaptive skills to successfully navigate the world. ABA is most often associated with treatment for individuals with autism; however, the field of ABA is much broader. Clinical and organizational applications of ABA include, but are not limited to, treatment of severe behavior disorders, pediatric feeding disorders, sleep

disorders, obesity, gambling addiction and drug addiction. In addition, ABA has been used to improve sports performance, improve health and fitness, improve safety in organizations and to conduct behavioral systems analyses to increase performance at the corporate level. Candidates who complete the required coursework will earn the graduate degree. However, to complete the ABA certification requirements, candidates must complete supervised field experience. Professionals currently working in the field of ABA have the potential to obtain these supervised experience hours through their current employers. However, in addition to the ABA coursework, York College will have a curricular structure that will provide candidates who do not have external means the opportunity to complete the supervised field experience through three, two-credit internships.

Trail-Way Speedway Releases Schedule

Community REACH Sets Program

Speedway owners Barry, Brad and Perry Hostetter recently finalized and released the schedule of events for Trail-Way Speedway’s upcoming 48th season of competition. Going into the 17th consecutive year as Trail-Way’s headlining division, the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic 358 Sprint Cars will return with 16 scheduled events, highlighted by the Friday, Aug. 7, Harvest Chapel Thunder & Lightning Classic and the Friday, Aug. 28, Trone Outdoor 358 Sprint Car Championship. The 270 and 600 Winged Micro Sprints will return in 2020 with 13 scheduled races apiece. The Micro’s season at Trail-Way will culminate with the 31st annual Kevin Gobrecht Memorial/National Open on Saturday, Sept. 19. The Central PA Legends will join the Micro Sprints. Trail-Way will have 22 Limited Stock races and 14 Street Stock events. Also, the 22nd annual Thunder on the Farm is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3. Classes featured will be the Street Stocks, Limited Stocks, Scramble Cars, Classic Cars and a 100-lap Enduro finale. The speedway’s lone 410 Sprint Car event, the fourth annual Armin Hostetter Memorial, will be held Sunday, Aug. 2, with a rain date planned for Sunday, Aug. 30. The Central PA Legends join the program, which will start at 7 p.m. For the first time, the ULMS Super Late Models will rip around the famed 1/3-mile oval on the farm, as Trail-Way honors the life of Junior Eckert with the Inaugural Junior Eckert Memorial,
