Woodland Stewardship Program Posted

EASTERN YORK COUNTY

The Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer a Woodland Steward Training Program from April through October. Sessions will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

The program is intended to provide foundational knowledge and practical skills for those interested in learning how to manage wooded and semiwild areas in ways that can meet human needs, improve biodiversity, restore woodland health, and regenerate degraded landscapes. The program will feature simple, small-scale, intensive, hand-tool-based techniques. No previous experience is required.

Topics will include forest ecology; disturbance-based forest management; riparian buffer design, installation, and maintenance; woodland plant cultivation; invasive species management; plant and insect identification; and animal tracking. Participants will work alongside Horn Farm woodland steward Wilson Alvarez in the woodlands and riparian areas of the 186-acre

The York County Agriculture Business Council (YCABC) has announced that the 33rd annual Agricultural Recognition Banquet will take place on Thursday, March 28, in Old Main Hall at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York. The event will begin with a social time at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m., followed by a program.

The event is intended to strengthen mutual appreciation of business, urban and agricultural communities. The York Fair is among the sponsors of this year’s banquet. The keynote

speaker will be Jennifer Flinchbaugh Beidel, a York County native who has taken her farm experience to the courtroom. She understands farmers and works with them to navigate environmental and FDA regulations. Beidel will discuss the value of leveraging relationships and connections to achieve professional and personal success.

As part of the event, awards will be presented for Outstanding Farm Family, Outstanding Ag Industry, Outstanding Youth in Agriculture and more.

Future Leaders Award will be presented in memory of Anthony G. Dobrosky. The Council will also conduct a silent auction to raise funds to support the Council and its agricultural education efforts.

The program will consist of woodland work and periodic classroom training. Classroom time will be used to introduce foundational concepts and reinforce training. Classroom time will be emphasized when winter weather prevents outdoor work.

Participants will receive their own set of tools to maintain and become proficient at using. This toolkit includes a professionalgrade axe, a woodland hoe, a bow saw, and loppers. Participants will be fully responsible for their own tools and will take their kit with them at the completion of the internship.

Alvarez is a certified permaculture designer, an inventor, a gardener, a skilled tracker, a bowyer, a nature awareness instructor, and a writer from Lancaster. For the past 14 years, he has taught classes and workshops on biointensive agriculture, regenerative technology, foraging, hunting, trapping, tracking, and wilderness survival. Daily workouts are offered from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial arts program, is taught by a certified teacher on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

The senior center also offers cards and games throughout the

week. Pinochle is played every Monday from 1 to 4 p.m., chess is played on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 500 bid is played on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., and the bridge club meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. The center offers shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional players are being sought. All are welcome to play or watch.

Board games, cards, and jigsaw puzzles are also available. In addition, wood burning classes and workshops are held on the first and third Fridays.

Youths in grades three to 12, as well as adults, are invited to participate in the 20th annual Eastern York Dollars for Scholars (EYDFS) 3-on-3 basketball tournament that will take place on Saturday, March 16. Games will be held in the gymnasiums at both Eastern York High School (EYHS), 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville, and Eastern York Middle School, 746 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville.

According to Sherrie Snyder, one of the event organizers, games will run continuously from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. “There are three players on the court at one time with one (substitute),” she stated. “So, teams can be up to four players.”

Snyder said that teams from both Lancaster and York counties take part in the tournament.

“We usually cap the number of teams around 100 due to space and our timeline,” she noted.

“Teams are bracketed by age, as well as travel or rec teams.”

All games will be refereed, and each team will be guaranteed a minimum of three games. Basketballs will be provided, and

players are asked to refrain from bringing their own basketballs into the gyms. “There is a winner in each bracket. Winners get medals or prizes,” said Snyder, noting that there are separate divisions for adults and youths.

Snyder encourages basketball players of all ages to participate.

“We would like to reach out specifically to senior high school girls’ teams,” she stated. “We have not had enough to have a full bracket in recent years, so (we hope that girls will) recruit (their) teams so we can have everyone play.”

In addition to participating players, Snyder said that the public is invited to come watch the games and cheer on the athletes.

“We will have concessions at both the middle school and high school,” said Snyder. “Walking tacos will be back again this year.

They were a big success at last year’s tournament. Due to space limitations, walking tacos will only (be offered) at the high school.”

To register, players may visit www.EYDFS.org through Friday, March 1. No registrations will be accepted after that date, and registration can only be done online.

Kindergarten readiness is the priority for the 4-year-olds who meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Students gain a basic understanding of core content areas, and both morning and afternoon classes are held.

The prekindergarten program is designed to meet the

needs of students who do not meet the age eligibility requirements for kindergarten, who would benefit from an additional year of preschool, or whose families are looking for a more intensive five-day program. Also, an extendedday/Lunch Bunch program is offered two days per week from October to April.

Athletic Association Honors YCHS Alumni The York Catholic High School (YCHS) Athletic Association recently inducted seven new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame. The recent inductees are Lisa Bornt-Davis, Class of 2003; Tim Marks, Class of 1979; Genevieve McGann, Class of 2009; Mary McGann, Class of 2009; Angelina Ortenzio, Class of 2008; Dave Strine, Class of 1973; and Tom Zielinski, Class of 1979.

Bornt-Davis was the 2002 YAIAA County singles tennis champion. She only played tennis for one year in high school due to a broken ankle, knee surgery, and a fractured back. After her York

Catholic tennis career, she played Division I tennis all four years at Furman University. She was on the Southern Conference champion team each year from 2004 to 2007 and was named to the All-Southern Conference Second Team for doubles in 2004, 2006, and 2007. Bornt-Davis placed second at the 2018 National 30s in women’s doubles and third at the 2018 national mixed doubles.

She ranked as high as No. 1 in the U.S. with her mother in the USTA National Super Senior Mother-Daughter Division, and she ranked as high as No. 4 in the U.S. with her father in the USTA National Super Senior FatherDaughter Division.

Marks’ basketball team won the state, district, and county championships in 1978 and 1979.

Marks was named to the AllCountry All-Star Team in 1979.

Genevieve and Mary were members of the state silver

medal-winning basketball team in 2009. Their basketball teams also won the state championship in 2006, 2007, and 2008; the district championship all four years; and the county championship in 2007 and 2008. Genevieve and Mary were both on the varsity soccer team all four years. Both were named to the All-County Soccer Team; Mary received this honor twice. Genevieve started every game of her basketball career at the Catholic University of America. Mary played two years of basketball and four years of soccer at the Catholic University of America.

Ortenzio was YCHS’ No. 1 singles player from 2005 to 2008.

She was YAIAA County singles tennis champion in 2008, a district tennis tournament qualifier all four years of high school, and a PIAA state tennis tournament qualifier in 2007 and 2008.

Strine was a member of the

1971 undefeated cross-country team that won the Diocesan Championship and finished fourth at states. Strine broke seven course records and finished eighth at states. In 1972, Strine broke YCHS school records in the 440, the 880, and the 1mile run. In 1973, his team won the Diocesan Championship and finished fourth at states.

Zielinski was a member of the basketball teams that won the state, district, and county championships in 1978 and 1979.

Noll is a senior vice president of WellSpan Health and the president of WellSpan York Hospital.

He also has corporate responsibilities for supply chain services and graduate medical education.

Noll attended Penn State University, receiving a baccalaureate degree with honors in health planning and administration. He then entered the University of Minnesota’s graduate program in hospital and health care administration, graduating summa cum laude. After starting his career at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 1989, he moved back to his hometown of York in 1998 to join WellSpan Health. Noll volunteers his time as a trustee and chair on several local, state, and regional boards

of directors, such as the York College of Pennsylvania, Penn State York, York County Economic Alliance, the Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers, and the Regional Board of the American Hospital Association.

Polk was born and raised in York and graduated from York Suburban High School. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in arts education from Carnegie Mellon University. Professionally, Polk taught art in Washington, D.C., and York city public schools.

After both teaching positions dissolved, she joined the Pfaltzgraff Company with positions in sales, marketing, and public relations.

Upon retirement, she returned to her artistic roots, taking classes at York College. In the community, Polk served on boards of several entities, with a focus on arts and culture organizations. She has been president of YorkArts, now Creative York; president of the Pennsylvania Arts Experience; and chair of the York County History Center board of directors.

Van Nice has experience as a human resources director in

large manufacturing and distribution, software development, and retail businesses. She earned a master’s degree in human resources management from Keller Graduate School and a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the University of Southern California. She has lived in Japan, the Czech Republic, and Costa Rica and served more than 10 years in the U.S. Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. Living on a working farm that raises grass-fed and grass-finished beef, Van Nice loves all art related to agriculture and the rich history of York County. She is married to Daniel, and together they have four children. In her spare time, Van Nice teaches human resource management to graduate and undergraduate students at both SNHU and UMUC. The Cultural Alliance of York County has announced the election of new board officers and reelection of board leadership at the December 2018 board of directors meeting.

The organization’s leaders are board chair Anthony Campisi, board vice chair and 2019 campaign co-chair William Yanavitch II, treasurer Erin Casey, secretary David Kennedy, 2019 campaign co-chair Jared Bean, fund development chair Paula Vitz, allocations committee chair James K. Fowler, board director Thais Carrero, board director Loren Kroh, board director Keith Noll, board director Frances “Fran” McCabe Polk, and board director Giana Van Nice.

Carrero is new to the Cultural Alliance board of directors. She is a native of Puerto Rico and has lived in Pennsylvania since 2016.

She is the deputy communications director for the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Her bicultural background and focus on community collaboration have led her to a number of volunteer opportunities and community leadership roles. She serves on the board of Latinos Unidos of York as well as with York XL and York Young Professionals, and she is a member of United Way’s Emerging Leaders Society. She is committed to engaging communities and organizations in conversations to create solutions for the problems facing local neighborhoods.

Kroh is new to the Cultural Alliance board of directors, but he has served as an annual campaign volunteer for the last several years. He is a managing member of Corvus, a start-up company formed to develop a web-based system, Campus ToolKit, to improve retention

PA Hope Ride Announced The PA “Hope” Riders are aiming to help find a cure for cancer.

The “Hope” Riders come from as far as Ohio and Florida and as close as Philadelphia, Hershey, and local neighborhoods. They aim to provide hope and support to those battling cancer and those who need that extra kindness to get them through each day.

The “Hope” Riders are the 2019 American Cancer Society’s (ACS) PA Hope Ride bicyclists, who, on Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, will pedal anywhere from 30 miles to more than 170 miles through central Pennsylvania, starting from the Hope Lodge in Hershey. Until then, “Hope” Riders will raise funds to support the Hope Lodges of Pennsylvania and other program services.

PA Hope Ride cyclists may ride as individuals or as teams. Riders may participate in one or two days of the tour. Participating cyclists pay a registration fee and are provided with tips to reach individual

fundraising goals.

The Hershey Hope Lodge will be the start and finish of this year’s ride. The “Hope” Riders may pass through five of Pennsylvania’s counties and many rural small towns. On June 22, routes will include 30, 62, 70, and 100 miles. The route on June 23 will be 70 miles. All routes on either day will end at the Hershey Hope.

On the route, cyclists of all skill levels enjoy a mix of scenic byways, country roads, and trails. While experienced riders enjoy challenging options on portions of the route, intermediate and novice riders will have designated courses to fit their level of riding.

Those who choose a one-day ride will finish at the Hope Lodge to a special finish line celebration.

Those who are riding two days will finish their first day ride at Kutztown University campus, where they will share their adventures of the day at a sit-down

dinner. Cyclists will be provided with all meals, rest stops, nighttime accommodations, and full support from mechanics and safety personnel during their one- or two-day excursion.

NAMI To Offer Family-To-Family Program NAMI York County, the local organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will offer the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program on Wednesdays, March 6 through May 22. The program will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Luther Memorial Church, 1907 Hollywood Drive, York.

NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 12-session education program

for family members, friends, and significant others of adults living with mental illness. The course is designed to help all family members understand and support their loved one living with mental illness, while maintaining their own well-being.

The course includes information on illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder,

major depression, and other mental health conditions. The program is taught by trained teachers who know what it is like to have a loved one living with mental illness.

Project-Based Learning Events Slated York College focuses on project-based learning (PBL), offering students an opportunity to work with community partners to develop key skills. Recent examples include engineering students using drones to study farming practices and the health of a local water reservoir, students in a communications class developing a plan to promote York’s Goodridge Freedom Center, students from hospitality management working on the renovation of the Yorktowne Hotel, and students from multiple disciplines building a telescope for the York County Parks System. York College is located at 441 Country Club Road, York.

Friday, Feb. 22, will mark a day of learning about PBL, as York College faculty participate in a workshop by Richard Vaz, direc-

tor of Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Center for Project-Based Learning. A showcase of current projects, including those previously mentioned, will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Yorkview Hall, Willman Business Center. The day will conclude with a public lecture by Vaz, “Project-Based Learning: Motivations, Implementation, and Impacts,” at 4:30 p.m., in Weinstock Lecture Hall, Willman Business Center.

The showcase and talk are free and open to the public.

During the presentation, Vaz will describe PBL as a strategy for helping students develop key skills and abilities such as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and creative problem-solving. The talk will explore how PBL fits into the landscape of higher

education, look at examples of PBL across the curriculum, and discuss results from a study looking at long-term impacts of PBL on graduates.

Vaz earned a doctorate in electrical engineering from WPI, focusing on signal analysis and machine vision. He held systems and design engineering positions with the Raytheon Company, GenRad Inc., and the MITRE Corporation before joining the WPI Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty in 1987. He served as dean of Interdisciplinary and Global Studies for 10 years and has advised hundreds of undergraduate research projects around the world.

Vaz was named the inaugural director of WPI’s Center for Project-Based Learning in January 2016. In his current role,

Appell Center To Host Irish Band The Chieftains will perform in the Strand Theatre at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York, on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 7.30 p.m.

The concert will feature music, dance and a few surprises.

The group is celebrating its 57th anniversary in 2019. The six-time Grammy Award-winning group has been recognized for reinventing traditional Irish music in a contemporary and international manner.

In Ireland, the group has been involved in many major occasions, such as Pope John Paul II’s visit in 1979, when The Chieftains performed to an audience of more than 1.3 million people, and Queen Elizabeth II’s visit in 2011.

Additionally, the group has performed on the Great Wall of

China, participated in Roger Waters’ “The Wall” performance in Berlin in 1990, and performed a concert in the Capitol in Washington, D.C. In 2010, Chieftains leader Paddy Moloney’s whistle and Chieftains member Matt Molloy’s flute traveled with NASA astronaut Cady Coleman to the International Space Station. In 2012, marking the Chieftains’ 50th anniversary, the band was awarded the inaugural National Concert Hall Lifetime Achievement Award at a gala event in Philadelphia hosted by The American Ireland Fund.

Hot Cocoa Cookie Recipe This recipe for hot cocoa cookies marries the decadent taste of chocolate with the notion of a warm and soothing hot cocoa that is ideal for a chilly February day. Even though the premium cocoa mix is baked right into the recipe, do not hesitate to enjoy a steaming mug of cocoa on the side as the perfect complement to this rich and tasty cookie.

1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon espresso powder, optional, for enhanced flavor 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 11/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 11/2 cups mini chocolate chips 1/2 cup cocoa nibs, optional

Topping About 5 1/2 dozen bittersweet disks, or other high-quality chocolate wafer Cookies 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup) unsalted Marshmallow fluff, cocoa nibs or butter, at cool room temperature, chopped nuts, for garnish 65 F to 68 F Preheat the oven to 375 F. Lightly 1/2 cup hot chocolate mix grease two baking sheets, or line 1/3 cup light brown sugar Hot Cocoa Cookies Yield: 5 1/2 dozen cookies

To make the cookies: Combine the butter, hot chocolate mix, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and espresso powder in a mixing bowl. Beat until the mixture is smooth. Add the egg and vanilla, and beat until thoroughly combined.

Weigh out the flour, or measure it by gently spooning it into a cup, then sweeping off any excess.

Add the flour to the cookie mixture, stirring to combine. Mix in the chips and cocoa nibs.

Drop the dough by teaspoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets - a teaspoon cookie scoop works well here. Space the cookies

at least two inches apart. Bake the cookies for 8 to 9 minutes, until the surface is set, but the cookies aren’t quite fully baked.

Take the cookies out of the oven and press a chocolate disk into the center of each cookie. Return the cookies to the oven for 1 to 2 minutes longer, until the chocolate begins to turn shiny and softens. Remove the cookies from the oven once again, and sprinkle the melted chocolate disk with your garnish of choice.

Allow the cookies to cool right on the baking sheet until the chocolate disks are set. Store wellwrapped cookies at room temperature for a week or so; freeze for longer storage.

Farm Show Features Butter Sculpture Gov. Tom Wolf and Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding helped unveil the Pennsylvania Farm Show butter sculpture, carved from a half-ton of butter and depicting the Choose PA Dairy “Find Your Power” campaign. The sculpture, a longtime Farm Show staple, aimed to encourage Pennsylvanians to support the state’s dairy industry.

The sculpture, sponsored by American Dairy Association North East (ADANE), featured several individuals donning superhero

capes, including an athlete, a soldier, a doctor, a firefighter, and a dairy farmer. The sculptors began work in mid-December to craft the work of art from butter donated by Land O’ Lakes in Carlisle.
