Friday, May 3, has been set as the date for the second annual Give Local York, a county-wide day of giving. During this year’s 24-hour online fundraising spree, community members may visit www.givelocalyork.org to make online donations to the nonprofit organizations of their choice.

The inaugural Give Local York event in 2018 raised $1.47 million for 211 nonprofit organizations, exceeding its goal of raising $1 million for 200 organizations.

“Because we have a successful one under our belt, we have momentum on our side (for the second annual give day),” said Meagan Given, executive director of Give Local York. “My general theme for this year is ‘Bigger and Better.’”

Indeed, goals for York County’s second annual communitywide give day have been set at raising $3 million for 300 nonprofit groups. Given noted that there was a bit of a learning

curve during last year’s inaugural event for organizers, representatives of nonprofit organizations, and community members, and she is optimistic that the event will continue to grow as everyone becomes more familiar with the give day concept. She noted that as of the Jan. 18 deadline for early registration, there were already 175 nonprofit organizations signed up to participate in the 2019 event, including 35 organizations that were not involved in 2018.

Given described Give Local York as a grassroots movement that is run by nonprofits for nonprofits. The event host is White Rose Leadership Institute, and organizers have drawn inspiration from give days in other communities, including Lancaster County’s Extraordinary Give. “We had a really great model to look at from Lancaster,” noted Given.

tions to a variety of 501(c)(3) organizations that do work that benefits York County and its residents. “(The) minimum gift (amount) is $10 to be inclusive,” commented Given. “We want to spread the message that everyone can be a philanthropist.”

In addition to receiving donations from members of the community, participating nonprofit organizations will also benefit from a stretch pool that has been set up to bolster the amount donated by community members.

Given noted that organizers are shooting for a stretch pool of at least $250,000 - up from 2018’s $100,000 - and that community members are welcome to contribute funds to the stretch pool.

At least $20,000 in additional funds will also be awarded to participating organizations as prizes.

Nonprofit organizations can register to participate in Give Local York online at www.give localyork.org. The deadline for organizations to sign up is Monday, April 1.

This year’s event will include an opportunity for participating organizations to connect with prospective volunteers, as well. When they set up profiles on www.givelocal york.org, representatives of participating nonprofit organizations will have an opportunity to list volunteer positions they are looking to fill. On the give day, community members will be able to peruse the volunteer opportunities and sign up to help.

Given said that the idea to include a volunteerism component in the event stemmed from conversations she had with representatives from a number of nonprofits after last year’s give day. “They told me they need money, but they also need volunteers,” she explained,

noting that signing up to volunteer is a way for people to support local nonprofits, even if they do not have funds to donate.

Another new feature planned for the 2019 give day is that community members will have the opportunity to set up peer-to-peer fundraising pages. “Individuals can create their own profile fundraising page for an organization they support,” explained Given. They can then solicit donations by sharing links to their fundraising pages with family and friends via social media and email.

While the mechanism for donating through Give Local York is online, there will also be plenty of opportunities for face-to-face interaction between community members and representatives of the nonprofit organizations seeking support. “There’s a lot of energy and excitement around the give day,” Given noted. A large celebration is planned in downtown York in conjunction with May’s First Friday activities, and attendees will have the opportunity to interact with representatives of nonprofit organizations while enjoying live music and other festivities. “It’s meant to be a party,” said Given, adding that a piece of feedback she frequently heard from community members after last year’s event was: “I didn’t know how much fun it was going to be!”

Additional parties and activities will be planned to mark the give day in communities throughout the county, and details about the events will be added to the listing at www.givelocalyork.org over the coming months.

“Of course it’s great to raise that much money in one day, but it’s really about community building and coming together,” said Given.

Free Diabetes Workshops Set The York County Area Agency on Aging will offer free diabetes self-management workshops in York Township. York County residents age 60 and older living with Type 2 diabetes and caregivers age 60 and older caring for someone with Type 2 diabetes can participate in the workshops.

The interactive program will include six workshops, which will take place once a week. The free workshops will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, Feb. 13 through March 20, at York Township Park Building, 25 Oak St., York. The workshops will be taught by certified instructors.

Patient Education Program, this health promotion program provides tools for managing diabetes, dealing with difficult emotions, and breaking the symptom cycle that comes with the disease. The program introduces participants to self-management tools like healthy eating, monitoring blood sugar, action planning, and dealing with difficult emotions, among others. A companion book, “Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Conditions, 4th Edition,” and an audio relaxation tape will be provided for all participants.

Celtic Folk Music Trio Posts Concert The Encore Concert Series at First Baptist Church, 3375 Druck Valley Road, York, will present The Knotwork Band in a concert on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 3 p.m. The Knotwork Band is a professional Celtic folk music trio with its roots in central Pennsylvania.

The band performs Celtic folk music from Ireland, Scotland, England, and Brittany, as well as American and world music with ties to Celtic folk music, either

musically or historically.

The Knotwork Band is consists of Victoria Visceglia, silver flute, wooden whistles, and vocals; Wicky Barnes Jr., guitar, bodhrán, and backing vocals; and Tommy Kochel, wooden flute, piccolo, high and low whistles, mandolins, cittern, bodhráns, bones, Northumbrian smallpipes, and hurdygurdy, as well as lead and harmony vocals and song- and tune-writing.

In celebration of Valentine’s

Day, the concert will feature songs related to love. A reception will follow the concert.

The Encore Concert Series is a music ministry of First Baptist Church, providing an outreach in the York area by offering free public concerts that create performing opportunities for both young and accomplished musicians.

Guests will then be guided on a tour of the sky using one of the club’s telescopes.

Foundation Supports Housing Charities, Disaster Relief The Realtors Association of York and Adams Counties (RAYAC) Foundation has announced that in 2018 it awarded $2,500 to the American Red Cross to aid flood relief efforts in York and Adams counties, as well as $46,650 to 17 housing-related charities in York & Adams counties. Individual donors, event sponsors and volunteers made the donations possible. The monies were raised during four fundraisers throughout 2018.

The foundation presented checks to the housing-related nonprofit organizations during a ceremony on Dec. 21 at the RAYAC office in York. Recipients included Adams Rescue Mission for Project 114, Bridge of Hope of York County for rent assistance for homeless mothers and children, Children’s Aid Society to replace privacy windows in the crisis nursery, Children’s Home of York for the residential youth program, Hoffman Homes for Youth to help replace the facility’s roof, House of Hope to help with refinishing floors,

This pilot program is designed to empower children ages 7 to 13, with support from their families, to reach a healthy weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Sessions will take place from Tuesday, Feb. 12, to Thursday, May 23, on

Uhler is a member of the CGA Law Firm’s Litigation group, and he has Bar admissions to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He has served as the York County District Attorney and was a Pennsylvania State trial judge for more than two decades. Uhler is the first sitting judge elected as York County Bar Association president, and he serves on the association’s board of directors. He is the founder and chairman of the York County Truancy Prevention Initiative.

On a chance visit to an antique shop, Keller came across a powder horn that once belonged to his ancestor Jacob Dritt. The find led Keller to search for the story behind it. Dritt served in the American Revolution as captain of a “flying camp” and was captured by the British Army during its assault on Fort Washington. After the war, Dritt purchased his namesake mansion,

CASA Plans Information Sessions Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will hold two information sessions on Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the York County Judicial Center on North George Street in York. The sessions will take place from noon to 1 p.m. and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The presenters will share information about the upcoming spring training and how to

become a volunteer. CASA volunteers advocate for abused and neglected children. New volunteers were sworn in on Nov. 13, 2018.

Lodge Makes Donation Embroiderers Group To Meet The Thimble and Thread Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. at Faith United Church of Christ, 509 Pacific Ave., York. The group’s next meeting will be held on Feb. 12.

Time-Saving Suggestions Posted Whether it is to spend more time exploring the great outdoors or enjoying the company of family and friends, everyone wants to find more time in their busy schedules to do the things they love.

While work at home and at the office always seems to be beckoning, no one wants to be tied down by housework and/or a to-do list.

Though it is impossible to add more minutes to the day, several tips can help people save time.

First, people should clean as they go. When it comes to keeping a home clean and organized, it pays to do a little bit at a time rather than spend a whole day or

weekend on chores. Wipe down the shower after each use to avoid the build-up of mold and mildew. Dust surfaces in the closet regularly to keep items and clothes clean longer, and wipe kitchen surfaces while cooking.

Regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping a home tidy and ready for spur-of-themoment gatherings.

Second, avoid shopping on weekends. People who work a typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule often do their shopping on weekends because that is when they have the most time on their hands. But since that is true for most people, long

lines and crowded spaces can be expected when shopping on weekends. People are encouraged to try to carve out some time on a weekday evening, especially a Monday or Tuesday, to free up precious weekend time and avoid long lines.

Third, simplify meal prep. Eating healthy, nutritious food does not need to be sacrificed when pressed for time. Instead, look for low- or no-prep meal options at the grocery store that can serve as a standalone meal or as a base with a protein option.

A Ten Thousand Acts of Kindness Photo Contest will be held to celebrate York’s unity through 10,000 acts of kindness.

Residents of York County are invited to use their phones to snap a picture and post it using the hashtag #yorkindnessphotos.

Individuals of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate.

Photos should include an original title and a statement of context in 20 words or fewer. All entries must be submitted by noon on Friday, Feb. 15. The top five photos will be made into Yorkindness post cards. Winners must be residents of York County.

Drummer Jeff Stabley, who directs the jazz program at York College, will gather some of his musical friends to present “An Afternoon of Duets” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, in DeMeester Recital Hall, Wolf Hall, located on the college campus, 441 Country Club Road, York. The event is open to the public free of charge.

The program will include “I’ll Fly Away/Bye Bye Blackbird” with Tim Thompson, Bach’s “Goldberg Variations I-IV” with York College assistant professor

Monk-Like” with pianist Kirk Reese, “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” with vocalist Robin Work, “Dulce” with Jose Cantos, “Flashlight” with 2018 York College graduate Joseph Banks, and “Anthropology” with saxophonist Tim Warfield. Collectively, the group will perform the original composition “Purple Flower,” composed by York College student Jack Byrnes, a junior music major from Bernardsville, N.J.
