History Center Plans Programs The York County History Center will offer a variety of programs and activities to the community. The events are free and open to the public. Princess St., York, will host a Family Day, themed “Adventures in the Chocolate Factory.” Stations will encourage hands-on learning about York’s candy making past and the world of Willy Wonka. Activities will include powering a giant hamster wheel to make a slushie, creating one’s own flavored popcorn, and sampling sweet treats from around York County and the world. York’s The Belmont Theatre will present Neil Simon’s “Rumors” on select dates from Jan. 10 to 19.

The Belmont Theatre, 27 S. Belmont St., York, will present Neil Simon’s “Rumors,” a comedy, in the Grumbacher Studio. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Jan. 10 and 17; Saturdays, Jan. 11 and 18; and Thursday, Jan. 16, as well as at 3 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 12 and 19.

The plot tells what happens at a Sneden’s Landing townhouse, where the deputy mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though he sustains only a flesh wound, four couples - gathering for their 10th wedding anniversary - are about to experience a severe attack of farce. As the confusions and miscommunications mount, the evening spins off

into classic farcical hilarity.

“Rumors” is directed by Greg Koslosky, and Christine Koslosky will be the stage manager. The cast will include Heather Strunk as Chris Gorman, Mike McGuinness as Ken Gorman, Sandy Shurina Claire Ganz, Gordon Einhorn as Lenny Ganz, Rich Mehrenberg as Ernie Cusack, Kristen Borgersen as Cookie Cusack, Konstantine James as Glenn Cooper, Jess Lynn Casner as Cassie Cooper, Ron Nason as Officer Welch, and Connor Kanya as Officer Pudney.

York County Literacy Council (YCLC) will launch the 2020 Buck a Book Reading Program in York County schools. The Buck a Book Reading Program provides prizes for students who read books and raise funds for the YCLC programs. Reading week will take place from Monday, Jan. 13, through Sunday, Jan. 19. All promotional materials will be provided to schools as well as incentives for faculty, and schools can receive books for their libraries.

This year, the York County K-9 Unit will provide assemblies in schools. The assemblies are designed to help students understand the importance of reading and also helping others. The K-9 Unit will teach school students about how the dogs help to keep

the community safe.

Proceeds raised through the Buck a Book Reading Program support YCLC, a nonprofit educational organization that provides free classes for basic reading, High School Equivalency Diploma and English as a Second Language adult students of York County. YCLC trains volunteer tutors to provide one-to-one literacy instruction for adult students. Approximately 40,000 adults in York County are functionally illiterate.

York Catholic High School (YCHS), 601 E. Springettsbury Ave., York, will host two open houses in January. Each open house will be customized to student and parent interests.

On Sunday, Jan. 12, from noon to 2 p.m., an Activities Fair will offer something extracurricular for everyone.

The Cultural Alliance of York County will kick off its 2020 campaign with CelebrateARTS! Week, a full week of free cultural events, from Sunday, Jan. 19, to Saturday, Jan. 25. CelebrateARTS! Week will provide residents of all ages the opportunity to enjoy cultural experiences while celebrating the community’s rich culture and vitality. Sponsored in 2020 by Glatfelter Insurance Group and M&T Bank, this annual event is intended to build long-lasting personal connections without the barrier of cost.

Optimist Club Seeks Members The East York Optimist Club, serving all of York County, is looking for new members who strive to maintain an upbeat attitude and want to help empower young people to be the best that they can be.

The East York Optimist Club is part of Optimist International (www.optimist.org), a worldwide volunteer organization comprising more than 2,500 local clubs whose members work each day to make the future brighter by bringing

out the best in children, in their communities, and in themselves.

Carrying the motto “Bringing Out the Best in Kids,” Optimists conduct positive service projects that reach more than 6 million young people each year. The East York Optimist Club, which meets on the first and third Mondays of each month from September through May, invites anyone who is interested to attend a meeting at

In honor of January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month, YWCA York and the York County Human Trafficking Task Force will host the Red Sand Project, a participatory art installation to shed light on a hidden crime-human trafficking. The event will begin at YWCA York, 320 E. Market St., York, on Friday, Jan. 10, at noon, along with official recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

This interactive art project includes pouring red sand into sidewalk cracks in front of YWCA York. Invitees will be encouraged to take photos of the finished piece using the hashtags #Red SandProject and #YWCAYORK. This visual highlights the need to prevent victims of this often hidden form of abuse from falling through the cracks. Companion events will take place at businesses along Route 15 in York County, an area known for high human trafficking activities.

YWCA York has been creating change

in how York County responds to trafficking, including emergency shelter, trauma counseling, and intensive case management, while the York County Human Trafficking Task Force provides leadership and education to law enforcement, behavioral health providers, medical professionals, and agencies working with vulnerable youths. The goal of these programs is to continue filling the gaps in service for the often unrecognized victim population through direct service, education, and advocacy.

Just like the Red Sand Project, YWCA York is committed to making sure human trafficking victims never fall through the cracks again. Nearly 11,000 cases of human trafficking were reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline in 2018, with reports coming from all 50 states. Pennsylvania is ranked seventh nationally for highest number of reported cases, a total of 275, by the World Health Organization.

Identifying trafficking victims can be challenging, because cases may go undetected and unreported. By acknowledging that human trafficking is occurring in the community, learning how to identify red flags, and making a report, community members play a critical role in identifying potential victims and account for the majority of tips to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.

Postal Service Shares Snow Removal Tips Winter is in full swing in Pennsylvania, accompanied by freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service asks customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, porches, street approach, and mailboxes.

Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes.

Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day.

To do their part to keep letter carriers safe and to help them continue to offer consistent delivery service, customers should heed the following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes.

Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural

delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers.

Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous.

While salting or rubber-backed mats help make them less slippery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail.

In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard.

Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well.

According to the U.S. Postal Service, slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of accidents among letter carriers. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home - can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.

AAUW Branch Plans Program The York Branch American Association of University Women (AAUW) will present a program titled “Writing the Next Chapter of the Brown’s Orchards’ Story” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at York Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Road, York. Mary Brown, president of Brown’s Orchards and Farm Market, and Linda Brown Krupa, food and nutrition consultant, will be the featured speakers.

In addition to providing a

historical overview of Brown’s Orchards and Farm Market, the speakers will explain their current roles, challenges, successes, and hopes for the future. The public is invited to attend.

Membership in AAUW, an organization that continues to work worldwide to improve the lives of women and their families, is open to all graduates with an associate degree or equivalent or a baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited institution.

4-H Clubs Plan Meetings Several 4-H clubs in York County have scheduled meetings as they gear up for the 2020 club year.

The Loganville 4-H Community Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Loganville Volunteer Fire Hall, 16 Mill St., Loganville, at 7 p.m. After a brief business meeting, members and their families will fold barbecue boxes for the fire company as their second community service project for the year.
