3335 Rosstown Road, Rossville, will hold a yard sale on Friday, Aug. 24, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 25, from 8 a.m. to noon. The event will take place rain or shine. The sale will feature Christmas and other holiday items, jewelry, CDs, DVDs, picture frames, dishes, kettles, silverware, knickknacks, purses, luggage, coolers, and more. Barbecue, hot dogs, and beverages will be available for purchase on both days. This is a Thrivent-funded project. Proceeds will benefit St. Michael’s Church TEAM SMAC (American Cancer Society, Relay For Life of Dillsburg) and church projects.

Garden Club Awards Scholarships The Penn-Cumberland Garden Club (PCGC) recently awarded four scholarships.

The Esther Kolze Scholarship Award of $1,000 for high school seniors was presented for the 2018-19 school year to Haley Rumbel. She lives in Camp Hill and attended Cedar Cliff High School. Rumbel plans to attend Penn State University’s Main Campus in the fall.

Scholarship Award of $1,000 for current college students was awarded for the 2018-19 year to Ian Hess. His hometown is Sanford, Fla., and this fall he will be a sophomore at Wilson College in Chambersburg.

Woodmansee Wins Award

Agency Marks 40th Year This year, SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care and Hospice celebrates 40 years of providing health care and related services in the comfort of home. The agency started in 1978 when the state of Pennsylvania mandated that state health nurses could no longer do community home nursing visits. SpiriTrust Lutheran (then known as Lutheran Social Services)

already had a homemaker program in Franklin County and rose to the challenge of filling the gap by providing home health care in the community.

In 40 years, the agency has grown from fewer than 10 employees to more than 400 and from serving one county in Pennsylvania to now serving 18 counties in Pennsylvania and three counties in Maryland. In 1978,

the agency started by providing home nursing services. Over the years, the agency has added physical, occupational, and speech therapies and social work services to its home health program. It has also added other programs such as hospice, palliative care, home health telemonitoring, and non-medical home care.

WIC Program Expands Hours As the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program provider for York County, the Community Progress Council WIC Program has extended its hours at the Hanover Community Center Offices of Community Progress Council. The Hanover Community Center is located in the New Hope Ministries building, 135 Baltimore St., Hanover.

Newly expanded hours will

At noon, meteorologist Drew Anderson will share how the sun causes weather both on Earth and in space, as well as how space weather may affect humans’ everyday lives. Anderson will also speak about the new technology NASA is using to monitor space weather, what causes the Northern Lights and why they may sometimes be seen in Pennsylvania, and how the inside of the sun works.

During the Telescope Clinic, YCAS members will share information and advice regarding how to buy an optical astronomical telescope. The presentation will begin promptly at 1 p.m.

The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will offer a public event at the observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, Aug. 25. A Solar and Radio Astronomy program will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a Telescope Clinic will occur from 1 to 2 p.m.

YCAS member Kerry Smith will present the radio astronomy portion of the event and also give attendees a peek into the future of the YCAS’ radio astronomy endeavors. Radio astronomy is the study of unseen radiated energy in the electromagnetic spectrum below visible light. By using radio astronomy, people are able to study astronomical phenomena that are otherwise invisible.

Attendees will also be able to view the sun through YCAS’ solar telescope, as well as view it remotely on a television screen that will be hooked up

The Shiloh Lions Club recently presented the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award to Lee Woodmansee.

He was recognized for his friendship, leadership, and service as a Lion. As a Lion for 35 years, he has served as president and treasurer, and for the past 10 years he has served as the coordinator of the Hoops for Sight fundraiser.

The nationwide award is the highest honor from the Lions Club International Foundation. The award embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. The recipient of this award is a model of exemplary service to the Shiloh Lions Club and to the community.

The Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25 and 26, in downtown York. The festival, which will be held in and around the Colonial Complex and along the Rail Trail from Philadelphia to Princess streets, will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 25 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 26. All events are free and open to the public.

This year’s featured artist is Robert Oughton. His pen-and-ink drawing “Lite Aire” is being used in print advertisements, postcards, billboards, and festival merchandise. Additionally, 100 fine artists from across the country have been chosen to participate in the Yorkfest Festival Marketplace. A variety of activities will also be available during Yorkfest.

The Yorkfest Juried Art Exhibition will be displayed at the Creative York gallery, 10 N. Beaver St. The public is invited to a reception for art and literary award winners at the gallery on Friday, Aug. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m.

New this year, a Silent Disco will take place in Cherry Lane on Aug. 24 from 8 to 11 p.m.

The Yorkfest Youth Art and Literary Exhibits will be displayed at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum, 217 W. Princess St. An awards ceremony will take place on Aug. 26 at 2 p.m.

Creative York will present the Creative York Family Courtyard, featuring a variety of interactive community art projects. The area will be located in the Gates and Plough Tavern Courtyard.

ChalkWalk will feature colorful chalk murals being created along Market Street between Pershing and Beaver streets on Aug. 25.

Multiple performance areas will offer live music and entertainment throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. Music Around the World will include a Musical Petting Zoo, instruction and materials to make Polynesian musical instruments, and a Community Music Composition Collaboration.

At the Silken Literary Tent, local and regional artists will present page poetry, dramatic monologues, spoken word performances, storytelling, and more. Readings will take place in 15- to 20-minute segments, all day, both days; passersby are welcome to join in and perform.

A spin art bicycle project will be available. Festival attendees are invited to create works of art while getting a little exercise by pedaling a stationary bike to activate a spinning platter while a partner squirts paint onto paper.

The York County History Center will offer several attractions in and around the Colonial Complex, including its gift shop, tours of the Murals of York and the Colonial Courthouse, and talks and demonstrations. Admission to the Agricultural and Industrial Museum, Historical Society Museum, and Fire Museum will be free.

The Historic Codorus Creek Boat Parade by the Stewards of the Lower Susquehanna will launch at 2 p.m. on Aug. 25 from Bantz Park.

The City of York will hold a free community jazz concert on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. in the William Penn High School auditorium. Music will be provided by Extremity.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. No tickets are required.

Additionally, diverse food and beverage options will be available at several locations throughout the festival.

Yorkfest organizers are also partnering with several other organizations that will host events downtown the same weekend. The Fringe Festival will feature live performing arts experiences from Wednesday, Aug. 22, to Aug. 26 in multiple locations, including within Yorkfest.

The ninth annual Cigar Box Guitar Festival will take place on Aug. 25 at The York Emporium, 343 W. Market St. A Turtle

Derby to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters will take place on Aug. 26 at the Market Street bridge.
