Since the establishment of the fundraiser 10 years ago, Hensel has been an active member of the planning committee and has secured numerous donations for the event. She is also a member of the Foundation Fighting Blindness advisory board.

The Shiloh Lions Club and its Hoops for Sight committee recently awarded the Paul Breneman Award to Bonnie Hensel.

Hoops for Sight is a Shiloh Lions fundraiser that supports research to find a cure for retinal diseases, including retinitis pigmentosa (RP).

The Paul Breneman Award recognizes a group or person who has made a great contribution in helping the club reach its fundraising goal and advance

Lisburn Community Fire Company, 1800 Main St., Lisburn, will host its 65th annual Olde Time Festival from Wednesday to Saturday, Aug. 8 to 11. The event is open to the public. The festival will take place on Aug. 8 from 5 to 10 p.m.; on Thursday, Aug. 9, from 4 to 10 p.m.; and Friday, Aug. 10, and Saturday, Aug. 11, from 4 to 11 p.m.

Aug. 8 will be Ride Night.

Rides will be available from 6 to 10 p.m. The large pavilion will be closed, but sandwiches, pizza, ice cream, and hot dogs will be available elsewhere.

Free entertainment will be provided by disc jockey Kraig Nace on Aug. 8, Make Mine Country on Aug. 9, Borderline on Aug. 10, and Laredo on Aug. 11.

A tractor parade, featuring all makes and kinds of antique tractors, will take place each evening from Aug. 9 to 11. The festival will also include bingo, a midway of rides and games, pony rides, hayrides, a silent auction, a book sale, and arts and crafts vendors.

The silent auction will take place

in the social hall. Bidders do not need to be present to win.

Food offerings from Aug. 9 to 11 will include french fries, chicken corn and ham bean soups, funnel cakes, and barbecue chicken. In the large pavilion, attendees may obtain hot chicken and roast beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes, homemade pies and cakes, pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages, and hamburger barbecue sandwiches.

Other food choices will include ice cream and a variety of cold beverages. Credit cards will now be accepted for payment in the large pavilion.

All proceeds will benefit the volunteer fire company. Pets will not be allowed at the festival.

The third annual MidAtlantic Allis Chalmers Tractor Show will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 5, at Wertz Farm and Power Equipment, 6877 Lineboro Road, Glen Rock. Show times will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. This year’s feature tractor will be the D-Series.

On Aug. 5 at 2 p.m., the MidAtlantic Allis Chalmers Club will hold its quarterly meeting.

There will be a flea market area with some AC novelties and tractor parts for sell or trade.

Food vendors will be on-site.

sponsor an ice cream truck as a fundraiser during the event.

New this year, the club invites FFA chapters who have tractor restoration projects, regardless of color, to display their tractors at the show.

Senior Center Posts Activities resume in October and will be offered for one year. Classes will take place on Mondays from noon to 1:30 p.m. Preregistration is required.

A trip to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 16. The fee includes bus transportation, the driver’s tip, a smorgasbord lunch, a step-on guide and the guide’s tip. The group will depart at 6:45 a.m. from Eagle Fire Company in Mount Wolf and return at approximately 8 p.m.

The Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities will offer a Fraud Bingo program on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 12:15 p.m. The interactive presentation will teach consumers how to protect themselves from investment fraud. Attendees should bring nominal-cost prizes.

On Monday, Tuesday, and Friday mornings, the senior center will offer the card games 500 and pinochle.

Newberry Township Plans NNO Event Residents in neighborhoods throughout Newberry Township will be invited to participate in National Night Out (NNO) with others across the nation from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7.

Participants will lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside.

Residents of Newberry Township are encouraged to share the evening with neighbors, local businesses, Newberry Township Police, and local fire departments at BAPS Motor Speedway, 690 York Road, York Haven. The

event will feature free food, door prizes, live music, demonstrations by the police and fire departments, and a fireworks display to conclude the event, including free 3-D glasses.

National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Newberry Township Police Department, will involve more than 16,728 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases around the world. United Way of York County recognized four volunteers with awards at its annual meeting on June 18. United Way staff, board members, and partner agency representatives gathered at Martin Library to celebrate the volunteers and the partnerships that help with building a stronger, caring community.

Amy Wannemacher was named Volunteer of the Year.

Wannemacher, vice president of tax at P.H. Glatfelter Company, currently serves as the chair-elect to the United Way of York County board of directors and recently completed service as the Search Committee chair for United Way’s incoming executive director. She is a longtime volunteer on United Way’s board of directors and Executive Committee, and she also served on the Allocations Panel in 2015 and Strategic Planning Committee in 2016.

Keith Noll was honored with the Distinguished Service Award.

Noll is senior vice president of WellSpan Health and president of WellSpan York Hospital. A member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society and immediate past chair for United Way’s board of directors, Noll has served on the board since 2009, including as board chair in 2015-16. He also served as campaign chair in 2013.

During a recent Wii Bowling competition among the residents of Letort Manor at Church of God Home in Carlisle, organizer Helen Milliron and a group of like-minded neighbors raised $6,643 for Big Brothers Big Sisters (BB/BS) of the Capital Region. The funds brought the group’s two-year total to nearly $14,000.

Approximately one dozen bowlers participated each year.

This year’s competition kicked off in late May at Church of God Home, a StoneRidge Retirement Living Community.

Through BB/BS of the Capital Region, mentors provide youths with support and encouragement. Mentors offer advice, help with homework, and take mentees on excursions, such as trips to the movie theater.

New Cancer Screening Conservation Award Guidelines Posted Available

York College of Pennsylvania has named Elizabeth Frey of Mont Clare as assistant director of the York College Fund.

Frey previously served her alma mater, Ursinus College, as associate director of Student and Young Alumni Engagement, assistant director of Alumni Relations, and program coordinator for Alumni Relations and Annual Giving. As a student, she served as chairperson of the Presidential Inauguration Student Event Committee and as president of the Campus Activities Board. She graduated from Ursinus with a bachelor’s degree in arts, media, and communications studies

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has released new recommendations for colorectal cancer screening guidelines, including the age screenings should begin for colorectal cancer. Previously, the screening age for a person at average risk was 50. The new guidelines have reduced that age to 45.

By lowering the screening age, the goal is to detect colorectal cancer earlier in patients who are at an increased risk for the disease. Even with advances in detection and treatment, colorectal cancer is the number one abdominal malignancy that affects both men and women.

Roughly 1 in 20 Americans will develop this cancer, and getting a colonoscopy can help in the detection and treatment of it.

Last year, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that colon cancer rates increased from 1 percent to 2.4 percent annually since the mid-1980s among adults ages 20 to 39. For the 39 years encompassed in the study, rectal cancer rates grew 3.2 percent annually for adults ages 20 to 39.

Colon and rectal cancer have, historically, affected older men and women. But the most recent research shows an increase in the number of adults in their 20s and 30s who are being diagnosed with these cancers, particularly rectal cancer.

Individuals already at an increased risk for colorectal cancer as a result of their lifestyle or family history may need to begin screenings at an earlier age. Individuals should talk to their health care

Conference On Genealogy Set

A prestigious award that celebrates voluntary conservation by farmland owners is coming to Pennsylvania.

This year, Pennsylvania will become the 14th state to present the Leopold Conservation Award in partnership with the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and Heinz Endowments.

Sand County Foundation, a voice for private land conservation, presents the Leopold Conservation Award to farmers, ranchers, and foresters for extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation on private working lands. The inaugural award will be presented at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January 2019. The recipient will receive $10,000 and a crystal award depicting Aldo Leopold.

Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes those who inspire others with their dedication to land, water, and wildlife habitat management on private, working land. The award brings together agriculture, government, environmental organizations, industry, and academia to advance

People who are at high or increased risk for colorectal cancer can include those with a family or personal history of colon or rectal cancer or colorectal polyps; a family or personal history of other cancers, including ovarian, uterine, gastric, and breast; a history of inflammatory bowel disease; and a personal history of radiation to the abdomen or pelvic area as a result of cancer treatment.

The ACS’ new guidelines also issue recommendations about colorectal cancer screening methods.

While colonoscopy remains the gold standard for both the detection and treatment of colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps, other options are available.

In its new guidelines, the ACS recommends choosing from six different types of screening tests.

Screenings include a highly sensitive fecal immunochemical test, a highly sensitive guaiac-based fecal occult blood test, multi-targeted stool DNA tests every three years, a colonoscopy every 10 years, a virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography) every five years, and flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years.

These screening recommendations are for every patient, and it does not matter which method they choose. However, if a test is positive, people should make sure to follow up with their health care provider, as they will then require a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy can detect potentially cancerous polyps and lesions before they develop into cancer or a more progressive form of cancer.

If individuals notice any of the symptoms of colorectal cancer, regardless of their age or health status, they should call their health care provider. Symptoms include a change in bowel habits, like diarrhea or constipation; rectal bleeding; blood in the stool; abdominal pain or cramping; weakness and fatigue; and unintended weight loss. Timely treatment can affect the choice of treatment options and survival.

The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) has announced that its 2018-19 season is themed “HEROES!” It will feature performances - including six Classical Series concerts, four Pops Series concerts, and the annual Young Person’s Concert - inspired by musical heroes, national heroes, heroes from olden times, sports heroes, and superheroes. Concerts will take place at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York.

On Jan. 19, 2019, “National Heroes,” featuring guest pianist Natasha Paremski, will highlight composers who were considered heroes in their homelands, including Dmitri Shostakovich in Russia and Jean Sibelius in Finland, and it will commemorate the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Knights in Shining Armor,” set for March 9, 2019, will feature Beethoven’s “Overture to Leonore” and will conclude with Bruckner’s fourth symphony,

which is subtitled “The Romantic.” On April 6, 2019, “Heroes From Olden Times” will feature guest vocalists and will showcase the York Symphony Chorus’ rendition of the Lord Nelson Mass. “Ein Heldenleben” (A Hero’s Life) by Richard Strauss will be presented on June 1, 2019, with the grand finale also featuring Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” and a concerto showcasing guest artist Christopher Rex, former principal cellist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

Pops Series concerts will include “Heroes and Superheroes” on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m., which will share the music of America’s TV and film caped crusaders. Families and children are encouraged to dress as their favorite hero or superhero.

“Holiday Pops,” the YSO’s annual holiday concert, will take place on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. and will feature the York Symphony Chorus and Greater York Dance. “Tribute to David Bowie” on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at 7:30 p.m., will showcase Bowie’s hits and will feature guest artist Jeans ’n Classics and guest conductor Chelsea Tipton II. On Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 7:30 p.m., “Sports Orchestrated” will highlight well-known sports music, from “Rocky” and “Chariots of Fire” to pieces from the Olympic Games and professional football, with surprise celebrities slated to attend.

The annual Young Person’s Concert, “Mozart’s Magnificent Voyage,” will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The family-friendly performance will feature assistant conductor Stephen Czarkowski.

The York Symphony Orchestra has announced that its 201819 season will be themed “HEROES!”

The Susquehanna Hosta Society (SHS) will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 130 Dorwood Drive, Carlisle.

Michael Larkin will teach a leaf casting class at 6 p.m. Attendees may bring two hosta leaves to cast, along with rubber gloves and a box or plastic lid to transport the leaves home.

There is a fee, and prepayment is required by Tuesday, Aug. 7. Space is limited. The class will be followed by a business meeting at 7 p.m.

The mission of the SHS is to encourage, promote, and cultivate the development of public interest in hostas through supporting educational activities, research, and community-building efforts that advance the use of hostas in landscapes.
