H.O.P.E. Awards Scholarships Help for Oncology Problems and Emotional Support (H.O.P.E.) recently awarded scholarships to Jenna Bittinger, Caleb Keller, and Rylee Smith.

H.O.P.E. has awarded a total of 81 scholarships and more than $60,000 to high school seniors whose immediate families

include a person with cancer, including some of the scholarship recipients themselves.

Bittinger graduated in the top 5 percent of her class at Northern High School. While in high school, she completed six college courses and was a member of the National Honor Society (NHS)

and the World Language Honor Society. As a member of the school volleyball team, she was selected for the Mid Penn AllStar Team in her junior and senior years and was chosen as the MVP for the Mid Penn Division out of 390 players.

Her love for Spanish and her goal to become a bilingual teacher and work in disadvantaged Hispanic/Latino communities has been her motivation since she was young. During her senior year at Northern, Bittinger not only took Advanced Placement (AP) classes, but she also volunteered three times per week as a teaching assistant for seventhgrade middle school students.

She has also tutored her high school peers in Spanish.

In the fall, Bittinger plans to attend Houghton College, where her older sister just finished her sophomore year. She was one of 25 students out of 1,000 applicants who were accepted into the Honors Program to study abroad in London for a semester. Bittinger also plans to attend graduate school to earn a master’s degree.

Bittinger’s grandmother has breast cancer.

Keller graduated from South Western High School. He plans to attend York College, where he has been accepted into the Presidential Research Fellowship

Program. He plans to major in biology and conduct research about consciousness. He plans to attend medical school to study anesthesiology.

Keller’s academic achievements have placed him in the top 5 percent of his graduating class.

He was a member of NHS and maintained a G.P.A. above 4.0, which has kept him on the distinguished honor roll all four years.

Keller is actively involved with his school’s Link Crew. This year, Keller took three AP-level courses, as well as classes at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.

At the Hanover Valley Presbyterian Church, Keller has been an organizer of Kid’s Fest, a yearly summer Bible camp for hundreds of children in the area. He has served as the leader and trainer of the helpers who conduct the children from activity to activity.

A year ago, Keller’s mother was involved in a car accident, and a follow-up scan revealed a mass in one of her lungs. Though a nonsmoker, she was diagnosed with lung cancer.

Smith graduated third in her class of 106 students at Hanover High School, with a G.P.A. over 4.0 and seven AP classes completed. She plans to attend Penn State University Park in the fall to major in biomedical engineering, with the goal of attending

She hopes to become a neurosurgeon and to study the relationship between genetics and cancer.

Smith played volleyball for four years and was her varsity team’s captain during her senior year. She was a member of her school’s Link Crew, as well as the NHS, the National Art Honor Society, and the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Smith played in the school orchestra during her freshman year and performed in the four annual spring musical productions. She was a member of the Show Choir for two years, and she performed with the Madrigals, Victorian Singers, Treble Makers, Women’s Chorus, and Chamber Choir all four years. In addition, she worked with the school’s Student Council to help

with four Mini-THONs. Community service activities have taken her as far as Detroit, where she worked with her youth group to help clean up neighborhoods in need, as well as closer to home, where she has worked with children in various capacities.

When Smith was in seventh grade, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a scary time for Smith and her two younger siblings. Fortunately, the cancer was detected in the early stages, and following surgery and treatment, Smith’s mother has been in remission.

H.O.P.E. is a volunteer-driven organization founded in 1994.

It is dedicated to providing assistance and support services to cancer patients and their families.

Institute Gives Out Scholarships YTI Career Institute announced it recently awarded 18 high school seniors scholarships through the Beacon Scholarship and Trades Scholarships programs. Winners were awarded full and partial tuition scholarships to attend YTI Career Institute.

Lancaster Campus scholarship

Embroiderers’ Guild Chapter To Meet The Thimble and Thread Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America will meet on Tuesday, July 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Faith United Church of Christ, 509 Pacific Ave., York. Members meet to stitch and learn new and simple variations of needle art.

Scholarship winners are selected based upon demonstrated achievement on standardized exams. The top scorers are then asked to provide letters of recommendation, a high school transcript and an essay describing what motivated them to choose their particular career path. Final candidates then have a personal interview with a Scholarship Committee panel. The combination of assessment score and interview determined the scholarship recipients.

Bell Promotes Employees MarChere’e Jones and Liz Mojica have been promoted from their positions in the Intellectual Disability (ID) Residential Services at Bell Socialization Services.

Jones was promoted in the ID department from her position as an assistant program coordinator to the role of residential program coordinator.

Jones worked for Bell previously as a residential program supervisor at Valley Road for about seven years and left in 2009. She returned to Bell in May of 2017.

Mojica was promoted in the ID department from her position as a client advocate to the

role of program specialist. In her new role, Mojica will oversee, supervise, and support five residential group homes and monitoring the health and safety of the individuals.

Mojica has been with the agency for nine years and has served in the roles of residential service worker, residential supervisor, and client advocate for the ID department.

Bell Socialization Services Inc. is a 501(c)(3) human services agency based in York that provides housing and living skills supports to individuals living with mental illness, people with intellectual disabilities, and homeless families.

YCSWA Leadership York Bestows Award Hires Jones The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) recently appointed Ruthanne Jones to the position of scalehouse weighmaster.

Jones is responsible for weighing the trucks coming in and out at the York County Resource Recovery Center’s scalehouse and recording the data necessary for billing customers. Jones earned an associate degree in liberal arts from Paul Smith’s College and a bachelor’s degree in English and communication from Syracuse University. Jones formerly served as an adult leader for the Boy Scouts of America for 17 years. Prior to being appointed weighmaster, Jones worked as an infant room teacher at Little Dreams Learning Center in Dillsburg. She resides in Wellsville.

Lions Club Awards Scholarship The 2018 Susquehanna Lions Scholarship was awarded to Northeastern Senior High School student Caitlyn Rau at the high school awards program on May 29. Susquehanna Lions past president Scott Wojtkowiak presented her with the scholarship.

Caitlyn, the daughter of John and Betsy Rau, plans to attend The Culinary Institute at Le Cordon Bleu, Bloomsbury, in London next year. She intends to pursue a career as a pastry chef.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the York and Lancaster areas graduated 19 students during a ceremony on May 27 at 6 p.m. at the Lancaster Stake Center. The students attended early morning seminary classes every day before school from ninth through 12th grades.

The high schoolers studied the four standard works of the church: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.

The graduates, listed by ward, are as follows. Lancaster Ward: Ethan Knarr. Lititz Ward: Kimberly Beck, Faith Dryden, Carter Hasson, MacGregor Henrichsen, and Eric Vassilaros. Shrewsbury Ward: Paul Abramson, Sadie Ann Bowman, Amanda Buckheit, and Benjamin Ward. West York Ward: Morganne Browning, Aidan Fryar, Sequoia Graver, Alexa Lucas, Ashley Markle, and Bryce Ohl. York Ward: Katelyn Herrin, David Johnson Jr., and Tanner Marchant.

At the graduation ceremony, Ohl gave the opening prayer, and Beck, Marchant, and Markle

delivered messages. The final speaker was Eva Poff, a seminary graduate who now attends the Institute for Young Single Adults.

The conclusion to the ceremony was the recognition of students and the awarding of certificates of completion. Adam M. McBride, regional coordinator of the seminary and Institute programs, presented the graduates to the Stake president, Conrad Knudson. The diplomas and certificates were presented to the graduates. Knudson concluded with words of encouragement for the graduating youths. Dryden said the closing prayer.

Many of the graduates will choose to go on and serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of the aims of the seminary program is to give youths experience in teaching the Gospel.

York County Literacy Council (YCLC) presented two BMX bikes to the winning students of the 2018 Buck A Book Reading Program Bike Drawing. Students from school districts around York County entered the bike drawing when they participated in the Buck A Book Reading Program.

The winning students, Cameron of Wallace Elementary School and Morgan of York Haven Elementary School, were announced at the Buck A Book Reading Program Recognition Event on the field at two York Revolution games.

The top overall school in the competition was Ore Valley Elementary School in Dallastown Area School District, and the top

per capita school was York Haven Elementary School in Northeastern York School District. Approximately 1,500 students participated and read 11,000 books.

The program encourages students to read and become involved in community service by providing prizes to the students for different levels of fundraising.

Participating students are also made aware of the difficulties illiterate adults face on a daily basis.

Money-Saving Travel Garden Club Presents Scholarships Tips For Retirees Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling.

Many retirees are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world.

Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement.

Seniors are encouraged to take advantage of age-related discounts. Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers age 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings.

Travel agencies should not be overlooked. While many

prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it is important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies.

Travel agencies have access to the latest information, and many specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte.

Traveling as part of a group is also an option. Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budgetconscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it is with a retirement community, religious organization, or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels and tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters.

The Garden Club of York (GCY) recently presented $1,000 scholarships to York County students Mitchell Grove, Daniel Rohrbaugh and Andrew Schott. To be eligible for scholarships from the club, students must take college courses in biology and its related fields, such as horticulture, landscape architecture, conservation, forestry, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental studies, land management, and wildlife sciences. Students may apply for the Garden Club Scholarships all four years of their college career.

Grove is an Iowa State University sophomore majoring in agricultural engineering. He graduated from Red Lion Area High School. This is the third scholarship he has received from the GCY. He has also received a $1,000 scholarship this year from the state garden club. This

summer, Grove plans to shadow a Penn State Extension agricultural engineer.

Rohrbaugh is a graduate of Susquehannock High School. He plans to attend Kansas State University to study agricultural business. He is an active member of the Pennsylvania Junior Angus Association and was instrumental in encouraging the state secretary of agriculture to declare Angus Week in Pennsylvania. Rohrbaugh is a fourth-generation Angus breeder.

Schott is a graduate from Southwestern High School in Hanover. He studies environmental science and biology at Messiah College. This summer, he plans to work on 4-H projects and stream restoration. Schott has also received a $1,000 fouryear scholarship from the state garden club.

Keeping Summer Road Trips Safe When the outdoors beckons, road trips can be the perfect way to see the countryside, escape the routine of daily life and enjoy short vacations. When taking to the open road, it is important to focus on safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that planning and prevention can spare road-trippers from the consequences of breakdowns, traffic accidents, or other road emergencies.

It is important to stock emergency preparedness items. Prior to a trip, drivers should make sure their vehicles are equipped with necessary safety items. Nearly half of Americans do not check that proper emergency items are stored in their vehicles prior to getting on the road. Before embarking on a road trip, drivers should make sure vehicles have a first aid kit, flashlight, water bottles, phone charg-

ers, tire repair tools, flares, jumper cables, towels, and even an old backpack for storage.

Drivers should take their cars in for tune-ups before long road trips.

Such tune-ups should include an oil change, battery check, tire rotation, and any other necessary servicing.

Drivers should map out the route before heading out. Drivers should also be aware of potential road closures, obstacles or construction. Thanks to real-time GPS updates through mobile phones and other devices, some drivers like to rely on tech to get them through. But it is important to realize service may be spotty in rural areas. Mapping a trip out in advance can save drivers from getting lost during mobile service interruptions.

Joining a roadside repair service is also encouraged. Breakdowns

Drivers should avoid distractions. To do so, drivers should keep children and other passengers occupied, so they are not a distraction to the driver. Traveling with favorite music, books, video games, or even a pad and paper for doodling can help occupy passengers’ time. Snacks should be packed to keep everyone feeling full

in between roadside pit stops. Drivers can also load their cars up with tissues, water, and other items to limit distractions.

Fun breaks can be planned along the way. Breaks give drivers a reason to rest and passengers the opportunity to get out and stretch their legs. The Roadside America smartphone app lists must-see stops along any route, and drivers can plan their own stops as well.

Travelers should stay over, if necessary. According to the NHTSA, driving while drowsy is a contributing factor in 100,000 accidents every year. Drivers should only get behind the wheel when well-rested. Drivers should share driving duties or plan a night at a motel so everyone is well-rested.

Road trips are all about fun, but drivers must emphasize safety before and during such excursions.

Hiking Club Posts Schedule The York Hiking Club will offer a variety of hikes throughout York County and the surrounding region. Nominal carpool fees may apply. A history-centered, 3-mile hike on Sunday, July 15, will take place at the historic York Iron Mine Company site at P. Joseph Raab Park, 2600 Hoff Road, Seven Valleys. They should wear long pants, waterproof boots and bug spray. YCHS Shares Class Of 2018 News York Catholic High School (YCHS) recently announced the accolades of the Class of 2018. Seventy-four percent of this class of 105 students earned over 11 million dollars in college scholarships. Many received multiple scholarships from universities, businesses, and nonprofit organizations, including full tuition and room and board.

This class will contribute to global society as 96 percent have chosen to continue their education after high school.

Another two percent are entering the military, and two percent are entering the workforce.

This class shared 17,768 hours of service to the community volunteering with Leg Up Farm, Ronald McDonald House, and City of York’s Bring on Play, as well as volunteering at fire departments, police departments, hospitals, doctors’ offices, nursing homes, food pantries, animal rescues, and community events.
