Annual Walk Will Support Heart Association The American Heart Association invites workplaces, friends and families from across York County to join the 2018 York Heart Walk. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15, at John Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York. Registration and festivities will begin at 9 a.m., and the walk will step off at 10:30 a.m.

Activities at this year’s Heart Walk will include free CPR demonstrations and health screenings, healthy snacks, activities for children, and a pet look-alike contest. The event will culminate with a 1- to 3-mile walk around John Rudy County Park.

Organizers have set a goal to raise $130,000 from the Heart Walk to support the American Heart Association. Walkers who raise a minimum amount will receive a Heart Walk T-shirt and the opportunity to earn additional prizes.

The 2018 York Heart Walk is co-chaired by Brent Doores, administrative director of the Heart and Vascular Service Line at WellSpan Health, and Dr. Paul Tolerico, cardiologist at WellSpan Health.

The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good movement to encourage sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. The American Heart Association is a voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

The Dover Area Community Library Friends group will hold its annual used book sale from Tuesday, Sept. 11, through Friday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Barn at Brookside Park, 4054 Fox Run Road, Dover.

Attendees may browse at least 10,000 books, including adult fiction and romance novels, Christian fiction, nonfiction, young adult and junior fiction, children’s board books, children’s hardcover and softcover books, CDs, and DVDs. Admission is free.

Friends of the Library members may bring their 2018 membership cards to receive a special offer. Donations of books for this year’s sale will not be accepted at the library after Aug. 26 or at the sale site in September.

The book sale is the Friends’ major fundraiser for the upkeep of the Dover Area Community Library, and the Friends must secure $43,000 due to cuts in the county’s contribution.

through an extensive self-study and quality improvement process, followed by an on-site visit by NAEYC assessors to verify and ensure that the program met each of the 10 program standards and hundreds of corresponding individual criteria. A NAEYC accreditation term lasts for five years.

Library Will Give Away Quilt Red Land Community Library will give away a quilt in a drawing as part of Family Fun Day on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The quilt was made by Barb Leese, Mary Ann McAllister, and fellow quilters. The group meets on Tuesday mornings when the library is closed. The members have spent approximately six months working on each quilt they have made over the past several years. According to Leese, at least 35 quilts have been made to support Red Land Community Library.

At one time, eight sewers worked around the antique quilting frame.

The quilt to be given away at Family Fun Day features a top sewn by one of the former quilters, Evelyn Beinhauer, who is now deceased. Beinhauer’s piecework was well-known throughout

the area. The 80-by-84-inch signed quilt is also the last one that was stitched at the former Red Land Community Library location. The library recently moved to a renovated space at 70 Newberry Commons, Etters. The quilt is on display at the library.

Tickets for the giveaway drawing are available at the library’s main desk. Family Fun Day will include activities for children and adults. Sept.

15 will also be the last day of the Friends of the Library book sale, which will begin on Saturday, Sept. 8.

United Way of York County will kick off its annual fundraising campaign with a free community event on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Central York High School, 601 Mundis Mill Road, York. When doors open at 5 p.m., attendees may visit tables offering information from the program’s panelists and other United Way partner agencies. The program will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Mike Veny, a mental health speaker, will share his experiences in addressing and erasing the stigma around mental illness.

Veny is the author of “Transforming Stigma: How to Become a Mental Wellness Superhero.� Guests will also hear from a panel of local mental health experts, providing an opportunity to discuss York County’s strengths and challenges in relation to mental health.

The panel will be moderated by Bev Mackereth, who has spent her career focused on working with the most vulnerable populations in York County and at the state level. Mackereth started her career as a caseworker at York County Children and Youth and was eventually appointed as the deputy

in can be appealing in premeditation, but appalling in performance. It entices by appearing to be attractive, popular, delicious. It draws mankind into it by promising pleasures, profits, and status. When conscience warns against it, our depraved nature, under these enticements, asserts safety in non-detection (in spite of what was seen and heard on last night’s news). There is wealth to be gained, lust to be satisfied, status to be achieved, and our feet are by nature ready to run in the way of sinful means to bring these ends to pass. Good times are to be had, and to be had safely (we think), so the expectation and anticipation produce the participation and commission. And indeed there is exhilaration, pleasure, excitement. The Bible does refer to “the passing pleasures of sin.� Ah, yes. The passing pleasures of sin. Criminals are incarcerated, families are destroyed, abortions are performed, children are reared without fathers, schools can barely keep order, robbery victims are left uncompensated, and in some cases those who sinned take their own lives because unwilling to face the shame of their sins. When mankind rejects God and His authority and consequently does not live in obedience to Him, it leads to

appalling consequences. To be appalled is to be overcome with consternation, horror, dismay. It is to become pale, faint, weak. It is to experience great shame and blushing. “What fruit (profit, advantage) did you then have in the things of which you are now ashamed?� This question was asked by the apostle Paul to Christians as he was exhorting them to live godly lives. He reminds them how harmful and dishonorable their former lives were in their unconverted state, and how they now are ashamed of their former behavior. They have come to faith in Christ and have become new creatures in Him. They have nothing to fear of punishment because their sins are forgiven through faith in the Son of God, but they continue to experience a shame for what they once were. Their remembrance of their former sins perform a humbling and sanctifying effect upon them. Many who are ashamed of their deeds are not converted, but all of the converted are ashamed of their sinful deeds. Jesus Christ is the only one who has ever lived who needed to have no shame. His righteousness is put to the account of all who call upon Him for salvation.

The York Catholic Senior High Student Council will sponsor a 3K run on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. While participants walk or run around the York Catholic campus, they will be doused with colored powder. Organizers recommend wearing white.

The registration form and fee are due on Thursday, Aug. 30. On-site registration will be available at 8 a.m. on the day of the event, but a race T-shirt will not be included. All proceeds from the event will benefit York Catholic’s Mini-THON and Four Diamonds’ fight against pediatric cancer. Craft, Food Vendors Sought Paddletown United Methodist Church, 355 Church Road, Etters, is seeking craft vendors and food trucks for Dumpling Days on Saturday, Sept. 22. This year, the committee is expanding the festival with more food, including food trucks; additional craftspeople; and more children’s games.

Due to last year’s overwhelming demand, more than 3,000 apple dumplings will be prepared for this year’s festival.

Chicken corn soup and pulled pork sandwiches will also be available. Penny Lane Band and Remix Worship will provide live music during the festival. Pumpkins and mums will be available for purchase.

York Catholic offers Advanced Placement courses in English, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, and U.S. History. This past spring, 32 York Catholic students took a total of 42 AP exams, with a 95 percent pass rate of a 3 or higher.

On those 42 tests, 16 students scored a 5, 15 students scored a 4, and nine students scored a 3.

AP Scholars with Honors designations are given to students who earn scores of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams. Brian Hand from the Class of 2018 achieved this honor. Hand is now enrolled at the United States Naval Academy.

AP Scholars are students who earn scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. Exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 as the highest grade possible. Many colleges and universities accept a score of 3 or higher for college credit.

Cards, puzzles, and games will be available throughout the week. Pinochle will be played on Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m. A new shuffleboard group will meet on Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. The group is open to players of all skill levels. Chess will be played on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Bridge Club will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays.

Wood burning workshops will be offered on the first and third Fridays of each month.
