“Shipwrecked” vacation Bible school will be hosted at Zion Lutheran Church, 2215 Brandywine Lane, York, from Sunday, July 8, to Thursday, July 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. At “Shipwrecked,” children will have the opportunity to take part in Biblelearning activities, songs, games, treats, Bible adventures, and more. Each day will conclude with the Sail Away Sendoff that gets everyone involved in living what they have learned.

Family members and friends are encouraged to join in daily for this special time at 8:15 p.m. The program is open to children age 4 through sixth grade. An adult Bible study will run concurrently. York Catholic High School student Brian Hand (front, center) has received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., where he plans to study naval architecture and aspires to become a surface warfare officer.

In high school, he was an honor roll student, a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council president, captain of the soccer team, and a member of the baseball and track and field teams, musical, and stage crew. He has received awards in various subjects, as well as the Lloyd Bollinger Leadership Award. He placed third and first in the York Catholic Speech Festival in 2015 and 2018, respectively. He is an altar server at St. Joseph Church and a volunteer with Rotary Club of York and United Way of York County. The Colonial York Knitters’ Guild meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 10 a.m. at Adams Electric Company on Route 616, off Route 30 West. Anyone interested in knitting and crocheting is welcome. For more information, readers may call 717-292-4115.

The guild will observe its summer schedule, which includes just one meeting - on the first Wednesday of the month - in July and August.

Students may apply for the Garden Club Scholarships all four years of their college career.

Grove is an Iowa State University sophomore majoring in agricultural engineering. He graduated from Red Lion Area High School.

This is the third scholarship he has received from the GCY. He has also received a $1,000 scholarship this year from the state garden club. This summer, Grove plans to shadow a Penn State Extension agricultural engineer.

Rohrbaugh is a graduate of Susquehannock High School. He

Institute Gives Out Scholarships YTI Career Institute announced it recently awarded 18 high school seniors scholarships through the Beacon Scholarship and Trades Scholarships programs. Winners were awarded full and partial tuition scholarships to attend YTI Career Institute.

Scholarship winners at each campus are listed by program and high school. York Campus scholarships recipients are Rowan Clay, computer systems specialist, York County School of Technology; Marlena Dunnett, veterinary technician, Dallastown; Alyssa Bonilla, dental assisting, Red Lion; Jessie Himelright, veterinary technician, Octorara; Ethan Wilson, computer aided drafting and design, Southwestern; Onasis Bisbal, medical assistant, Dallastown; Sara Geldmacher, veterinary technician, Kennard-Dale; Alexis Youngblood, veterinary technician, Kennard-Dale; Keagan Bange, electrical technology, Spring Grove; and Gideon Sharun, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration technology, Perry Hall Christian.

Scholarship winners are selected based upon demonstrated achievement on standardized exams. The top scorers are then asked to provide letters of recommendation, a high school transcript and an essay describing what motivated them to choose their particular career path. Final candidates then have a personal interview with a Scholarship Committee panel.

The combination of assessment score and interview determined the scholarship recipients.

A history-centered, 3-mile hike on Sunday, July 15, will take place at the historic York Iron Mine Company site at P. Joseph Raab Park, 2600 Hoff Road, Seven Valleys. Participants will hike around the old mining pits, look at the mine openings, climb approximately 700 feet in elevation, and walk about one-eighth mile down a stream. They should wear long pants, waterproof boots and bug spray. The group will meet at the west end parking lot on Woodberry Road and depart at 8:30 a.m.

Art entries are sought for the 48th annual York Art Association (YAA) Open Juried Exhibition, slated for Sunday, Nov. 4, through Saturday, Dec. 15, at the YAA gallery, 220 S. Marshall St., York. Cash prizes will be awarded. An opening reception will be held on Nov. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m., and the presentation of awards is slated for 3 p.m.

The entry deadline is Friday, Sept. 21. Registration and entries may be completed at https://yaa.artcall.org. The exhibition is open to all fine artists and is limited to three digital submissions per artist. Separate nonrefundable entry fees have been set for members and for nonmembers.

Her next exhibition focused on the American Impressionists is slated for display at the San Antonio Museum of Art in 2020. Burdan received her master’s degree and doctorate from Brown University.

On Wednesday, July 11, a video presentation and discussion will begin at 12:30 p.m.

The topic will be “Food, Glorious Food: Satisfaction without the Guilt.” From 2 to 3:30 p.m. the “Ask the Nurses” program will continue with the subject “Thyroid.” Nursing students from HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will talk about health issues and remedies related to the thyroid gland.

The first Christmas in July craft will be offered on Thursday, July 12, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Participants will make cork snowflake ornaments to take home and extra ornaments for distribution at Christmas. All are welcome to participate. On Friday, July 13, the woodworking lab will be open, and interested members may learn to do wood burning. They may bring their own projects, watch and learn, or purchase a project.
