One Book, One Community (OBOC) organizers have announced that members of the public may vote for next year’s One Book, One Community book selection from Wednesday, Aug. 1, to Friday, Aug. 31. From a ballot of five books chosen by the book selection committee, participants may vote for the book they would be most interested in reading and discussing in 2019. The selections are “Ordinary Grace� by William Kent Krueger, “Ginny Moon� by Benjamin Ludwig, “A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea� by Melissa Fleming, “Killers of the Flower Moon� by David Grann, and “The Hate U Give� by Angie Thomas. It is not necessary to read or have read the books to place a vote.

The public vote initiative is a way to promote community involvement in the selection of the title. The 2019 OBOC

regional campaign represents collaboration among a total of 40 libraries in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and York counties.

To vote, members of the public may visit www.oboc.org or fill out paper ballots by visiting a participating library. The initiative includes Cumberland County Library System, Dauphin County Library System, Perry County Libraries, York County Libraries, Hershey Public Library, and Middletown Public Library.

The winner of the public vote will be announced in November. Members of the public will be invited to read the chosen book in January 2019, and programs at the public libraries will begin in February, which is designated as both Library Lovers’ Month and Book Lovers’ Month. Multiple copies of the winning title will be available at local public libraries beginning in January 2019.

Dance Chapter Sets Social York USA Dance Chapter 3008 will sponsor a ballroom dance social themed “Surf ’s Up� on Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Jewish Community Center, 2000 Hollywood Drive, York. The event will begin with a Night Club Two Step lesson by Keith Stremmel from 3 to 3:45 p.m., followed by opportunities to dance to a mix of ballroom, Latin, and swing music by disc jockey Ken Pandozzi.

There will be a couples tango formation performance by a group from Hummelstown. The routine will incorporate Argentine and traditional tango with some paso doble.

A few months ago, the York chapter introduced a new feature, Dancing Dots. Men and women who are willing to switch dance partners throughout the evening wear round colored stickers to let others know whom they may comfortably ask to dance.

Dancers of all ages and experience levels are welcome. Separate admission fees, which include the lesson, have been set for USA Dance members, for guests and for students through college age. Organization Sets Mini Golf Marathon The York County Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) will hold its 10th annual Mini Golf Marathon from noon to midnight on Friday Aug. 17, at the Heritage Hills Mini Golf Course, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York.

Separate golf fees have been set for adults and for children.

Golfers may attend any time during the 12-hour period. Attendees may win door prizes, participate in contests on the course, and enjoy free pizza and snacks.

Proceeds from the event will help to fund forensic interviewing and medical services for abused children who are referred to the York County CAC. In 2017, the York County CAC interviewed 770 children about child abuse and provided 131 forensic medical exams, an increase of 26 percent over the

prior year’s number of exams.

This year, the CAC is on pace to serve 820 children.

The mission of the York County CAC is to reduce the trauma of child abuse investigations, foster professional collaboration and cooperation, and promote education and advocacy regarding the prevention of child abuse within the community. Central to the CAC mission is a multidisciplinary model that includes the district attorney’s office; the Office of Children, Youth and Families; WellSpan Health; all law enforcement jurisdictions in York County; the Victim Assistance Center, a program of the YWCA; CASA; and guardians ad litem.

Youth Center Posts Events 18 South Youth Center has posted its news and upcoming events.

The center is moving to its new location at 17 N. Main St., Red Lion. To mark the occasion, 18 South will offer a coffee and dessert hour at The Red Brick Bakery, 55 N. Main St., Red Lion on Wednesday, Aug. 22, from 7 to 8 p.m. The event will include a brief update about 18 South, an introduction of The Hope Project, and a time of networking.

VFW Post 1446 Extends Item Collection Red Lion VFW Post 1446 and Auxiliary has announced that the VFW will continue its item collection through September. Post 1447 and Auxiliary members, along with other members of the Red Lion community, have been donating and collecting items for Pennsylvania National Guard members deployed in Kuwait. Organizers have already packed and mailed 14 boxes. Another mailing will be sent to the troops in time for the holiday season.

Donation suggestions include current issues of magazines, foot care items, powdered beverage mixes, playing cards, foam balls, frisbees, and small board games. Monetary donations will also be accepted to help offset the cost of mailing the items.

Donations will be collected at the VFW’s chicken barbecues on Saturdays, Aug. 18 and Sept. 22.

Students Chosen For Leadership Program Austin L. Grove American Legion Post 403 in Glen Rock and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 403 recently announced it would sponsor the attendance of eight Class of 2019 students at the Keystone Boys State (KBS) and Keystone Girls State (KGS) leadership programs. Post 403 sponsored Clayton Baker from Spring Grove Area High School, Jesse Brittell from Christian School of York, Ryan Brockington from York Suburban High School, Jordan Futrell from Susquehannock High School, Ethan Horn from Susquehannock High School, Anthony Hinson from Spring Grove Area High School, and Matthew Sharkey from Susquehannock High School. KBS is an educational program that has been conducted annually in Pennsylvania since 1937. For the past several years, Austin L. Grove American Legion Post 403 has sponsored rising high school seniors to attend the program.

This is the first year Unit 403 sponsored a KGS attendee. The Pennsylvania American Legion opened the 2018 session of KBS at Shippensburg University on June 17.

KBS is a one-week workshop on the principles and organization of Pennsylvania government. Attendees learn about

city, county and state government through simulations of operating the agencies and local governments themselves. During this year’s workshop, participants had an opportunity to hear about the Travis Manion Foundation and its vision to create a nation of purpose-driven individuals and thriving

communities that is built on character. They also attended a college fair; participated in a labor negotiation simulation; heard about leadership from Dr. John J. Bell, superintendent of the Delaware Valley School District and a national speaker; and competed for Samsung American Legion Scholarships.

The Christian School of York (CSY), 907 Greenbriar Road, York, recently named Eden Hinds as Head of School. Hinds, who previously lived in Houston, brings 25 years of educational experience as an administrator and teacher. Hinds is the school’s first female head of school.

Hinds is in the process of finalizing her doctoral program in Ethical Leadership from the University of St. Thomas. She has previously earned three graduate degrees in education and education administration from Samford University.

Irish Blessing will present the first concert in St. John Episcopal Church’s fifth annual Concert Series. The series will kick off on Sunday, Aug. 26.

Golf Tournament To Support HOPE International

Her name is Lorraine Murungu. Her son, who is named Blessed, was born with cerebral palsy, and he is paraplegic and unable to speak. Murungu has learned to make rag dolls, a product that can be marketed heavily near the beginning of the school year in Zimbabwe, where Murungu lives. A loan from a HOPE International group has helped make her business possible.

When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, landed in Zimbabwe with a team of 22 others in January, he was thinking about the difference HOPE International has made by teaching individuals in 15 countries about savings groups and microfinance. But as he watched Murungu and other women who have benefited from HOPE as they worshipped God, he found himself learning from them. “I heard them talk, praying for each other and supporting each other,” said Rutt, who was struck by the humility and gratitude he witnessed. “Before we left, Lorraine asked me, ‘What can we pray for, for you as you go back to Pennsylvania?’ That struck me as insightful and showed me so much depth of character and integrity,” said Rutt.

HOPE International is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. The organization is currently planning its 18th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 14.

Round one of the four-person scramble-format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at

7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a boxed breakfast and buffet lunch, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and a buffet dinner.

According to HOPE special events coordinator Carley Bilindabagabo, the tournament can comfortably accommodate about 160 golfers per round. Special prizes will be given to golfers who are closest to the pin, make the longest drive, or shoot a hole-in-one.

Through working with her savings group, called “Kuwirirana,” which loosely translates to “getting along,” Murungu was able to purchase a sewing machine she can use to make rag dolls. Her life is one of many touched by HOPE, but Rutt asks those who hear about her life to

Parks and Penn State Behrend’s Jordan Oberlande were chosen from among 18 student athletes named to the All-Academic Team.

Parks is a communication major at Medaille. He has achieved a 3.98 grade point average through his junior year.

To make the journeys of HOPE clients more real to golfers who participate in the tournaments, organizers have devised an activity to engage golfers on the links.

“We will have client images with their names and businesses stationed on the course,” said Bilindabagabo. “Each golfer will receive a card, and they fill in the card as they go through the course with the name of the business,” she explained. If the golfer completes

The Cultural Alliance of York County recently announced the allocation of $597,780 to be distributed to its eight partner agencies in 2018. These dollars were raised in the 18th annual “Bringing Arts and Culture to Life” campaign that funds eight partner agencies and the Creative Impact Awards that bring arts, history, and culture to the people of York County.

The funds they receive are unrestricted funds and are

based on the scores of an allvolunteer review panel made up of contributors. Every year, the Allocations Panel reviews each partner and scores its organizational and fiscal strength, leadership, and support of the cultural sector. As a result, the agencies receive constructive suggestions and recommendations as well as the unrestricted cash.

The funding allocated to each partner includes Appell Center

for the Performing Arts, $286,089; Creative York, $45,278; Greater York Dance, $10,777; York Art Association, $7,033; York County History Center, $209,316; York Junior Symphony Orchestra, $7,813; York Symphony Orchestra, $27,047; and York Youth Symphony Orchestra, $4,427.

Horn Farm Center Receives Grant Riparian, or streamside, plant buffers are an effective way of reducing soil erosion and runoff of sediment, nutrients, and other potential pollutants. Agricultural runoff is largely responsible for much of the pollution in regional waterways. To address this issue, the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, York, designed a riparian corridor restoration project.

The Horn Farm was recently awarded more than $24,000 towards the implementation of this design through Stream ReLeaf, a program jointly organized by Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. This project will have numerous economic, educational, and ecological benefits for the community.

Horn Farm Center will be able to demonstrate various productive uses of a multi-functional buffer. The stream corridor itself will be cleared of invasives and planted with natives, including black walnut, sycamore, and red maple. The funds will help Horn

Farm Center establish an orchard of pawpaw and persimmon alongside rows of mixed berry varieties for fruit production. Silvopastures, which combine trees with grassy areas for grazing animals will be planted. Plants in the silvopastures will be selected to boost honey production for local beekeepers. A section of mixed species for woody floral production will supply the burgeoning local floral market.

The awarded funds will also contribute greatly to The Horn Farm Center’s education offerings. The Center currently offers a variety of programs, including educational workshops, educational internships, and on-site support in the form of an incubator farm. The multi-functional riparian buffer will allow for the expansion of the farm’s educational offerings, with newly created spaces for research and teaching about agroforestry and perennial farming.

Homeschooling Conference Planned Homeschooling Outside the Box, a free one-day conference organized by the York Home School Association, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at York Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Road, York.

The conference will feature three sessions where panels of homeschooling families from various backgrounds will share their nontraditional approaches to learning. The panelists will share their families’ experiences and answer questions about delight-directed or child-led learning, eclectic homeschooling, unschooling, and more, including what counts as educational and “What about college?”

The day will begin with check-in, coffee, and a light breakfast at 8:30 a.m. The first session, “Getting Started,” will begin at 9 a.m. and will cover why homeschooling does not have to be similar to public school and how

parents can pique their children’s interest in learning.

The second session, “Recordkeeping and Evaluations,” set for 10:45 a.m., will focus on how nontraditional learning looks on paper and how it can be done in compliance with Pennsylvania’s recordkeeping requirements.

Lunch will be at 12:15 p.m. Attendees should pack a lunch. Coffee and other beverages will be provided.

The third session, “High School,” will start at 1 p.m. It will address issues specifically dealing with the high school years and graduation requirements in Pennsylvania.

soil and surrounding environment. Buffer plantings are proven to reduce sediment and runoff from farming. Buffers also improve water infiltration which will help keep valuable water on the farm. With funding from the Stream ReLeaf Program, the center will be able to reintroduce more than 35 species of native plants to 6.1 acres of degraded streamside woodland ecosystem.

In addition to improving ecological health on the farm, this project will positively affect the health of waterways downstream, namely Kreutz Creek, the Susquehanna River, and, eventually, the Chesapeake Bay. A total of 2077 trees and shrubs are scheduled for planting this fall and in the spring of 2019.
