18 Ideas For

Creating Holiday Memories Counting down to holiday celebrations means many different things to people across the globe. Although families likely have several traditions they anticipate each year, it can be fun to incorporate some new merrymaking festivities. Here are some festive ideas to include in the days leading up to the holidays:

Annual memento: Have children or adults make one new handmade ornament each year. This way, the tree is always evolving, and everyone can track milestones.

2 3

Cookie day: Devote one day to making holiday cookies. Invite friends or family members over to help with the baking and then distribute some of the cookies to elderly neighbors. Holiday classic: Spend a night in and watch a classic Christmas flick you've never seen before. Streaming movie services often put classics and obscure titles into rotation during the holiday season.

4 5 6

Christmas concert: Host a gathering of children, giving them an opportunity to sing or perform their favorite tunes for an audience. Take the show on the road to a nearby nursing home. Dine out: Take a break from cooking, shopping, and hosting and stop into a restaurant you've been meaning to try. This is also a great way to support nearby businesses. Support a child/family for the holidays: Volunteer with a charitable organization that provides for less fortunate families. Purchase items on the wish lists of children or families in need to spread the holiday cheer.

ENGLE PRINTING & PUBLISHING CO., INC.

8 9

y o f

Trim a tree: Get together with friends at a tree-trimming party. Rotate the hosting house each year. Play dress-up: Enlist a friend to dress up as Santa Claus to make a holiday gathering extra special. Wilderness walk: Enjoy the crisp air and snow and see a local park from a winter perspective.

Acts of kindness: Choose any act of kindness and make it happen this Christmas. Possibilities include helping to feed people in need or helping a shut-in to shop for the season.

12 13

Kids' Secret Santa: Spread the joy of giving by having children choose the name of a sibling or friend from a hat and purchase or make a gift for that person. Hand out hot chocolate: Make a big thermos of hot chocolate and give it out to workers who have been out in the cold.

Camp-in: The first night the tree is decorated, allow the children to sleep beside it under the glow of Christmas lights.

16 17

Scavenger hunt: Plan holiday-themed trivia questions and hide small trinkets for participants to find.

Say Goodbye To

SEASONAL STRESS

The holiday season and the seemingly endless list of tasks that go along with it can be stressful for many people. When the holiday hustle leads to frayed nerves, there are some things you can do to reduce stress.

· Hit the gym.

The American Society for Exercise Physiologists says exercise has been shown to boast one’s mood and increase one’s sense of well-being, selfesteem, and stress responsivity. Stress can rev up adrenaline, and exercise can help relieve any pent-up energy and frustration.

· Eat the right foods.

Stay hydrated and eat plenty of fiber, fruits, and vegetables. This can help stabilize blood sugar levels and decrease cravings for comfort foods. Do not turn to caffeine, sugary sweets, and alcohol to reduce stress, as such 14

foods and beverages may only compound the problem.

· Get ample rest.

Go to bed and rise at the same time each day. Many adults function best when they get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night, and a good night’s rest can help in the fight against stress.

· Engage in activities you enjoy.

Make time for activities that you like to do, such as crafts, hobbies, and listening to music. Take some time away from holiday tasks to give yourself a break.

· Skip the need to be perfect.

Christmas movies and holiday ideals portrayed in advertisements can put undue pressure on people. Ignore any perceived pressure to have a perfect holiday season, instead resolving to enjoy the time with family and friends. ENGLE PRINTING & PUBLISHING CO., INC.
