Strasburg Celebrates Active People Who Helped Create Passive Park

Strasburg Community Park is referred to as a “passive park,” meaning it is designed for nature-based activities.

The people responsible for making that happen were anything but acquiescent.

Several of those community members were on hand June 9 for a celebration of the park’s 25th anniversary. The milestone was especially rewarding because of the effort it took to get to this point.

Cindy Baker vividly recalls the day the journey began: March 24, 1998, the day of a Strasburg Borough council meeting.

“We rallied the troops because we heard some of the council members were considering selling (the land where the park is now located)

off for development,” Baker said. “So we had over 200 people show up for the meeting.”

Only 125 fit into the conference

Lydia Nolt noted that it’s one of her most memorable events of the year.

Mennonite Life’s 14th annual Storytelling Night will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 4, at Landisville Mennonite Church, 3320 Bowman Road, Landisville. Everyone is invited. There is no admission fee, but Mennonite Life will welcome donations to support its mission.

“Storytelling Night is a highlight for me,” said Nolt, who is an educator at Mennonite Life. “It’s one of my favorite events. I love attending. The stories that come out of it are so powerful. When you have two people in conversation with each other, different things come to light.”

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is undergoing a major construction project while it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Once it’s finished, the 16,000square-foot, six-stall exhibit structure will house six Pennsylvania Railroad historic steam locomotives, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The state capital project,

with a cost of $15.6 million, is expected to be completed at the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027.

A groundbreaking ceremony was scheduled for July 29, but the project got underway several weeks earlier. “Technically, we’ve already started,” Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania director Patrick Morrison said on July 18. “We are probably about five weeks into the project. We’ve made some good progress already trying to take

Hyacinth Stevens and Kevin Ressler will be the guest speakers. Stevens is a bishop in LMC’s New York District and works as executive director of Mennonite Central Committee East Coast. (LMC used to stand for Lancaster Mennonite Conference, but that group is now a nationwide conference.) Mennonite Life said that Stevens has spent 12 years pastoring King of Glory Tabernacle in the active Christ-centered community in the Bronx where she was raised. “She is passionate about embodying Anabaptist peace witness and bringing the Good News to her community wherever she goes,” Mennonite Life said. Stevens and her husband, Benjamin, have four children.

room, and the rest gathered outside the door. Baker said four of the board members were inclined to proceed with the sale of the land, and three were opposed.

“The people spoke of their want to keep the open space,” said Baker. “Because of the overwhelming show for open space, two of (the council members) changed their minds that night.”

A motion to table the issue was made and passed, which gave the residents five years to come up with a plan about what to do with the 12 acres and how to pay for it. The group opposing the housing development, called Save Our Strasburg, sent a survey to local residents. The result of the questionnaire was that a vast majority of people wanted a passive park.

Save Our Strasburg hired a lawyer, who helped register the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation as a 501(c)(3) charity. In November 2000, the borough and

the foundation agreed on a 99-year lease for a grand total of $1.

The foundation is required to provide upkeep for the park grounds. Baker noted that the borough continues to support the foundation.

“It was a victory back then, and every time you come in here you see it was worth it,” she said. “It was worth the time and energy spent and the money. This is a glorious place.”

Ann Schein, who was part of Save Our Strasburg, said, “It’s such an asset to the town.”

Bruce Ryder has served as Strasburg mayor for 25 non-consecutive years. He was the mayor in 1998 and holds the job today. The mayor in Strasburg only votes to break ties, but Ryder was sympathetic with the group’s cause.

“I didn’t know what we might do with the land,” he said. “I was supportive of the idea of looking into having a park.”

Ryder is thrilled with the finished product. “Strasburg Community Park is a very nice park, and it’s different than most. It is great to also have ballfields, but this is a

little different, and it provides for a different kind of outdoor recreation than active sports,” he said.

Strasburg Community Park, located at 151 Precision Ave., boasts walking paths, a natural amphitheater, and a pavilion and highlights native plants in varied landscapes such as woodlands, meadows, and a vernal pond and wetlands, according to foundation board member Caroline Morton.

Harold Wiker of H.L. Wiker construction company and local entrepreneur Kenny Heisler were instrumental in founding the park project.

Landscape designer Larry Weaner and his friend Phil Larsen, a landscape architect, were hired to plot the park. “It was very exciting, and it got more exciting as it progressed,” Weaner said. “We had a blank slate and designed multiple habitats with forest patches, meadows, shrub thickets, and ephemeral pines at the far end. It was really about people enjoying a natural space and accommodating wildlife.”

He added, “Phil and I were directing volunteers where to

plant trees, and Phil turned to me and said, ‘This is about as good as it gets.’”

At the recent celebration, Tom Pontz, a Strasburg native, and his group, The Tom Pontz Project, performed a jazz set. Sallie Gregory, an education operations coordinator with the Lancaster Conservation District, gave a presentation about life found in local streams.

“It’s a celebration of 25 years, and this is a product of what a community can do together, and that’s worth celebrating,” said Barb Rathbone-Frank, secretary of he Strasburg Community Parks Foundation. “It feels like we’ve been affirmed, that what we thought would be a good idea was a good idea.”

Weaner had not seen the park for several years before returning during the pandemic. “It blew me away how well it had been maintained,” he said. “The design could’ve been perfect - I’m not claiming it was perfect - but it could’ve been perfect, but without proper management, it would not look like this. Cindy, Barb, and their colleagues deserve a lot of credit.”

MCCL Plans Auditions

Central Pennsylvania Bicycling Trifecta Set

The Central Pennsylvania Bicycling Trifecta will combine three events in central Pennsylvania to offer cyclists a riding challenge close to home.

Tiffany’s Pink Pedal Ride will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, beginning at the Penn State Health Breast Center in Hershey. The route distance options are 15, 32, or 62 miles. The event was started in 2024 and raises funds to support metastatic breast cancer research. Participants are encouraged to wear pink. For more information, visit https://pinkpedal.org/about/.

The Covered Bridge Classic will take place on Sunday, Aug. 17. The event will offer routes of 25, 50, 65, or 100 miles that will go through several historic covered bridges in Lancaster County. The ride draws more than 1,000 participants each year, and proceeds will benefit the Lancaster Bicycle Club grant program, which funds covered bridge restoration and bike-related initiatives. More than $590,000 has been raised since 1999. For

more information, visit https:// coveredbridgeclassic.com/.

The Harrisburg Bicycle Club’s Three Creek Century will take place on Sunday, Sept. 21. The ride will offer low-traffic road route options of 21, 30, 50, 62, 75, and 100 miles, or riders can opt to ride 18 miles on the nearby Cumberland Valley Rail Trail. All routes except the rail trail will circle back to the starting point at the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company near Newville, offering flexibility on route distances for riders. Proceeds will benefit the Harrisburg Bicycle Club and its grant program, which supports bike-related organizations and projects. For more information, visit www .threecreekcentury.com.

Everyone who registers will receive a discounted registration to all three events plus a commemorative pint glass. Registration for the trifecta will close on Thursday, July 31. Registration for all three events can be made at the same time at https:// tinyurl.com/trifectaregistration.

Morrison said the design of the building is “modeled after or inspired by a historic roundhouse that was in Cressona. That was where our original turntable was located. It’s a climate-controlled exhibit building. It’s not exactly like a roundhouse. It’s an exhibit building; it’s not an exact replica. And I have to point that out because everybody wants to think that it’s a replica, or it’s a re-creation. It is not. It’s inspired by a historic roundhouse, but it is not a one-toone re-creation of anything.”

Morrison said a fan-shaped layout proved to be the best

solution considering the space constraints in the museum’s outdoor yard. “The roundhouse design will utilize brick, steel, and glass, as well as a clerestory-style roof, which maximizes the use of natural lighting,” a Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania press release said.

“It was very important that it fits the footprint of our property,” said Morrison. “Our yard has limited space around that turntable. So we wanted to make sure that it fit that footprint. It also had to fit all six of those steam locomotives, because we wanted to get those six steam locomotives indoors out of the elements.”

The museum’s 1928 Reading Company turntable will be refurbished and updated during the project. “Over the long haul, we will have the ability to occasionally move (the locomotives) outdoors into our shop or restoration shop to do restoration on them,” said Morrison. “It won’t happen very often. We’re not going to be moving them in and out, but we have the access to them to be able to move them to our shop, which will give us the ability to, one by one, work on them.”

Members of the public can help by contributing to the Ready for the Roundhouse campaign, which is separate from the state capital construction project. Led by the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, the Ready for the Roundhouse campaign is funding the restoration and preservation of the steam locomotives. Morrison said locomotive Pennsylvania Railroad E6s Atlantic No. 460 has undergone a comprehensive cosmetic restoration, and the Friends’ campaign has raised more than $300,000 for

other nonprofit leadership roles.

A biography provided by Mennonite Life said, “He is rooted in his identity as a person of faith as he works for an equitable peace and justice for all, through listening and honoring the voices in the community. Ressler aims to challenge and transform unjust systems in Lancaster city, where he and his wife, Melissa, are raising their family.”

Both speakers will share a series of seven four-minute stories, and they will alternate. “Neither of the storytellers will know what the other one has prepared, and I also do not know what they have prepared,” said Nolt. “It’s truly that evening you see what the Spirit weaves together. We’re all experiencing it for the first time.”

Nolt added, “Part of our mission here is to tell the stories of Lancaster Mennonites and interrelated

communities and for people to know their own stories and know each other’s stories. By doing that, people recognize the humanity in connecting through learning about each other’s lives and experience and faith and histories.”

Mennonite Life rotates Storytelling Night between county churches and seeks speakers from a variety of backgrounds. “A goal is to recognize that the stories of Lancaster Mennonites are so, so diverse,” said Nolt. “They’re bringing wisdom from their experiences with their communities here in Lancaster, maybe from growing up, maybe stories from childhood.”

Nolt noted that Storytelling Night is an entertaining event regardless of one’s religious beliefs. “You do not have to be Mennonite to find meaning in this evening and also to enjoy it,” said Nolt. “I think maybe the general public has a

certain idea of what a stereotypical Mennonite experience is like. This might be a chance to learn something new about the Mennonite community.”

It is also an opportunity for people to take a brief break from their busy lives. “It’s a chance to power down, listen really closely, and meet community members in a way that is not possible in a lot of other settings,” Nolt said.

Mennonite Life’s mission is to create a space where diverse communities can connect across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own stories.

The Mennonite Life Visitors Center, located at 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, houses the organization’s archives, which holds the historical records of Lancaster Mennonites, Nolt said. “We also have the Biblical Tabernacle Experience, which is a scale reproduction

of the biblical tabernacle and tells the story of God dwelling with His people,” she added.

Mennonite Life also operates the 1719 Museum at 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Nolt said that museum tells the story of the Herr family and the neighboring Conestoga-Susquehannock communities.

restoration of the other five steam locomotives.

Morrison said people can make donations and become members of the Friends by going to www .rrmuseumpa.org. “The simplest thing people can do is just visit the museum,” he added. “That helps us, too.”

Visitors will notice some changes. “We are working on a way to keep our yard open, but for the time being, the yard is closed,” Morrison said. “That’s the only downside, but the trains are visible from fence line. (People) can walk around our fence line and view them. We have to take some safety precautions if we don’t want anybody to get hurt while the construction is taking place. So we’re working out a plan for providing some limited access where we can. But we want to make sure our visitors are safe. That’s the biggest facet of that. … Our exhibit hall, our indoor space, is fully accessible the hours that we’re open,”

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, located at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, is celebrating its silver anniversary. “It’s interesting to me that every time we have a major milestone in our history as a museum, we’re either starting a project or in the middle of a project,” said Morrison.

Rolling Stock Hall was added when the museum was 20 years old, and Stewart Junction came five years later. “Our front entrance was added on during what would have been our 30th anniversary, so we seem to leap forward with construction projects during every major anniversary year,” said Morrison. “A lot of it is coincidental, but some of it is good timing. ... This is really the icing on the cake for celebrating our 50th anniversary.”
