Struggling
Spotting the signs that a friend or family member is struggling can be challenging. Everyone is unique and we all have different ways of showing or talking about our experiences.
You can:
• Be patient.
• Offer emotional support and reassurance. Show your support
• Ask how you can help
• Inform them how to seek help when they’re ready (for example, you could show them our pages on talking to your GP and what might happen at the appointment).
• Look after yourself, and make sure you don’t become unwell yourself.
• Contact a mental health first aider.
Changes in behaviour
Has the person shown any change in their usual behaviours? For example, do they seem less interested in doing their usual activities?
Changes in mood
Has the person shown a change in their mood? For example, seeming less happy or energised than usual?
Changes in thoughts or feelings
Has the person talked about any changes to their thoughts or feelings? For example, feeling hopeless or worried?
Physical changes
Has there been any physical changes, including unexplained aches and pains, feeling sick or agitated? Is self-care being neglected?
Some people may not show any signs that they’re struggling. This doesn’t make their experiences any less real or hard to cope with. It’s always ok to ask someone how they’re doing, even if you’re not sure whether they’re finding things difficult.
