TfL releases land for 10,000 London homes Transport for London (TfL) is to release more than 300 acres of land to help create more than 10,000 new homes across London. The TfL land will be developed over the next decade to London’s rapidly growing population and the Capital’s contribution to the economy of the country. 67% of this phase of development is in travel Zones 1 and 2. The new land-release programme is in addition to the work of TfL’s £360m growth fund, which is creating more than 50,000 homes and 30,000 jobs by supporting 14 transport projects across London that are directly unlocking development. The Mayor of London has pledged to have an exit strategy for all City Hall owned land by the end of his term in 2016, with 99% now freed up for development to help deliver thousands of much needed new homes. The London Land Commission, driven by the Mayor, will also map all land
It’s important that all key agencies work together to accelerate the rate of housebuilding across the Capital and redevelop land and assets wherever possible to deliver more homes.” Graeme Craig, director of commercial development at TfL, said: “We’re determined to use our assets to help create more homes and jobs for Londoners. As the custodians of some of the best assets in the Capital, it is right that we explore every opportunity to maximise the use of our land. “This next phase of development will see us working with our partners to turn those plans into reality. All revenue raised from the developments will be reinvested into the transport network, helping us to bear down on fares and continue to support London’s economic growth and booming population.”

Housing Minister Brandon Lewis said: “More than 230,000 households have been helped into homeownership through government-backed schemes since 2010, while our extension to the Right to Buy will see a further 1.3 million housing association tenants given the opportunity to own their own home.
Housing Minister Brandon Lewis said the bill marks the start of a national crusade to transform “generation rent into generation buy”. Measures announced in the bill include automatic planning forward more land to build new homes quicker. Planning reforms to support small builders were also

KBB raises Pisa’s game with complementary colours
The £6.5M refurbishment project will provide a world class facility for veterans in crisis and will enable the charity to greatly improve the levels of care it is able to provide. William Wimshurst, Design Director of Wimshurst Pelleriti, said, “Due to the unique service that the building provides, it has to remain fully operational with minimal loss of existing bedrooms and facilities whilst the refurbishment takes place. This has proven challenging with regard to both the design and the phasing of the construction and has been the key driver of the brief since the initial concept.” The existing building is being completely refurbished and extended from 1166sqm to 1745sqm, and is being over-clad with a new terracotta cladding system designed to allow for the building to be occupied whilst full refurbishment and replacement of the services, windows and thermal performance is carried out. As well as upgrading all the current facilities, the project will give Veterans Aid an extra 12 bedrooms plus training, therapy and meeting spaces and crucially will also help to reduce the building running costs per resident. CEO Veterans Aid Dr Hugh Milroy added, “The refurbishment and upgrade of our New Belvedere House hostel is more than just a makeover; it’s an investment in the future. We have a model that works, but time has taken its toll on our buildings and facilities. The current project won’t just restore the status quo, it will future-proof our operations and provide an environment for those who spend time with us that sets them up for success. It was vital for us to work with a delivery partner who shared our vision and Wimshurst Pelleriti have met and exceeded expectations.”
KBB, the specialist in replacement doors for kitchen, bedroom and bathroom cabinetry, has Pisa range, to provide the perfect complement White, Cashmere and Cream are the new on-trend solid colours for Pisa’s slab door format. Pisa is made in the innovative new PVC-edged MFC with almost invisible laser edging. There is a developing preference for woodgrains combined with solid colours which tone with them rather than contrast strongly. The new solid colours in Bellissimo’s Pisa range allow contractors or home owners to achieve this contemporary two-tone look in an affordable and timely fashion (two to three days). The handle-less look is achieved with discreet J handles applied to the top of the door. Pisa is offered in bespoke sizes and a 300mm x 300mm curved door is available.
The Fulham-based practice has a deep understanding of wellbeing, and has worked closely with the charity to ensure that the facility delivers in line with these aspirations. While working for Rogers, Stirk, Harbour & Partners, William Wimshurst was responsible for the Stirling Prize winning Maggie’s Centre in London, where the design of the building is a critical part of the care process. He believes in creating a domestic feeling even in large care settings and in structures that are airy, abundant with natural light and connected to nature. He said “Like Veterans Aid, we truly believe that the building we are creating will greatly enhance the wellbeing of its residents; they need to feel warm and secure and above all be uplifted by the environment around them. It is a joy for an architect to work with a client with aspirations like these.” developer-update.co.uk

ISO-BLOCO WIN2WALL offers great performance and low cost for UK installations Window installers can now take advantage of the new ISO-BLOCO WIN2WALL multi-level sealing tape from ISO-Chemie, which combines excellent performance with competitive cost perimeter joint between windows, doors and walls in the UK. Not only does ISO-BLOCO WIN2WALL enable windows and doors to be quickly and easily sealed from inside the building, the product will seal gaps from 2 mm to 8 mm, which will accommodate the vast majority of UK window installations, and will come in 2 widths to give the extra thermal insulation equivalent to A Rated (40mm tape) or A+ and A++ windows (65 mm tape) Among the key advantages of WIN2WALL are not only its thermal performance, but it is also weather tight to 600 Pa (Violent Storm Force 11) and has excellent acoustic insulation properties. Installing a window or door using WIN2WALL will give the window an equivalent or better thermal property than the window unit itself. Installation example: ISO-BLOCO WIN2WALL Even the smaller 40mm size tape will give the joint between the window and wall a U-Value of 1.2, equivalent to an Energy A-rated window.
useful to new build developers who are looking for excellent and consistent performance across potentially large installation projects. Ultimately, ISO-BLOCO WIN2WALL offers the installer a more straightforward installation in all weather conditions and the end user reduced energy bills. Along with ISO-Chemie’s ISO-BLOCO ONE sealing tape, WIN2WALL is also permeable to outward moving vapour diffusion according to the RAL principles of 3-level sealing and is more air tight on the inside than the out. This guarantees that the joint will dry out completely. More at www.iso-chemie.co.uk Email: email@example.com Tel: 01207 566874.
Other comparable size tapes on the market will not match the 1.2 U-value or the performance of an A-rated window. The larger WIN2WALL size tape will give an A-Value of 0.7, which is even better than a triple glazed Passivhaus standard window. WIN2WALL is applied to the window prior to installation and has very slow expansion speed to give ease of installation for large windows or even patio doors. WIN2WALL also complies with the Zero the gap between ‘designed performance’ and ‘built performance’ to give a guaranteed on site performance. This makes WIN2WALL particularly

Expanded Metal Improves Both In The creative use of expanded metal from RMIG mounted two metres from the facade keeps the sun out and gives the building a welcoming and light expression For architects Kjær & Richter, it was important to combine the best possible indoor climate with an elegant exterior when they were assigned to design educational facilities for Learnmark Horsens in Denmark. It is a well-known fact that concentration levels drop if the indoor temperature goes up and this led the architects to search for an aesthetic solution to block out the solar radiation.
The facts behind a versatile sun screen 1,600 m² of expanded metal panels from RMIG keep indoor temperatures down and concentration levels up at Learnmark educational facilities. Raw material: Aluminium EN 1050 Pattern: LT200x80x24x2 and LT115x52x24x2 Thickness: 2.0 mm Surface treatment: Powder coating Architects: Kjær & Richter A/S developer-update.co.uk
It was decided to create a sun screen mounted approximately two metres from the facade to give the building a light expression without compromising the screening effect. A further advantage of mounting the panels in this way is that a small passage is created between the building itself and the sun screens, giving easy access for cleaning windows and general maintenance. The expanded metal panels provide the perfect balance between light and shade. To give the facade a more vibrant look, the architects chose two types of expanded metal panels from RMIG, and have successfully given an interesting dimension to the otherwise square facade with these two different kinds of mesh. This decorative effect is further enhanced when some of the panels are opened.

Water repelling masonry protection protecting against rain penetration, dirt, algae, pollution, oil and other surface contaminates with a ‘lotus effect’ self cleaning action. ProShield XT masonry protection treatment not only protects, but actively maintains original colour and look of building structures. PROTECTION
Global pressures to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions are increasing. Buildings make a significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions: the way they are heated, lit and used accounts for about 40% of all the UK’s carbon emissions. In 2009 it was reported that 25% of total emissions was attributable to domestic buildings. The walls of a building can account for a large proportion of the heat lost through its fabric, and there are pressures to design and adapt buildings to improve their thermal performance. The UK Government’s commitment to an 80% reduction by 2050 from 1990 levels means that efforts to improve the energy efficiency of our existing buildings are intensifying. However, increasing the thermal resistance of masonry and especially traditional solid walls can be problematic. Cladding systems and cavity wall insulation can sometimes create more building problems than they solve. This is not just an aesthetic concern; changing balances between heat, air and moisture movement may also affect the integrity of a building, affecting the health of its occupants with damp and mould issues. The clear masonry protection treatment – ProShield XT works at the molecular level to actively impregnate and bond to mineral surfaces such as brick, stone and concrete. By creating a strong but invisible protective surface, water is repelled,
Saves energy – When walls get wet through water penetration, they become less effective at keeping heat in. As the UK climate is getting wetter, this is becoming a big problem. In cavity wall constructions, if the insulation gets wet, it loses much of its insulating qualities which makes it ineffective. ProShield XT repels rain penetration and is scientifically proven to reduce heat loss in single skin masonry, with an energy saving in space heating of up to 20% one single coat application is all that is needed. Cream based system – ProShield XT cream lines the pores of the masonry to form a water-repellent matrix. Rather than blocking the pores and fissures the masonry is allowed to breathe whilst repelling water. Being a cream rather than an aquaeous solution enables more contact time with less wastage, allowing maximum penetration into the substrate. ProShield XT reduces masonry salt blooming (efflorescence) and minimizes the effects of frost damage or spalling.
UKAS independently tested to 25 years service with no loss of performance. Self-cleaning, water-repellent. Resistant to freeze/thaw cycling. Allows masonry to breathe. Eco-friendly, water based and easy to apply. Prevents growth of moss, algae and lichens. Conforms to BS EN 1504-2-2004. Hygrothermal testing according to ISO 15148:2002.

New Video Highlights How To Reduce Energy in Your Building

With tough legislation focusing attention on energy use in the built environment, how we heat, cool and ventilate our buildings is coming under scrutiny as never before. “We’ve been on an eight year journey and one of the things we are saying in this video is that any business could and should be planning to improve the performance of their building”, explains Russell Jones who hosts the video. “Just like any other company we have had to make a strong business case for each new piece of equipment, but the fact that we have improved so much and have The video can be viewed on the company’s dedicated YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/mitsubishielectric2

INDUSTRY URGENTLY NEEDS CENTRALISED BODY FOR ALL CURRENT, PENDING AND PLANNED LEGISLATION AND NEW REGULATIONS… Tony Gittings, of water heating product manufacturer Rinnai, argues that the industry is in dire need of a central body or council to co-ordinate the burgeoning weight of new and pending standards, legislation, Codes of Practice. This includes emerging support technologies such as BiM which needs clear and concise communication to the marketplace. Within the next 10 years the HVAC industry could change out of all recognition as we face an unprecedented set of challenges here in the UK and Europe. The industry is and lower emissions – all in line with the UK’s legally binding carbon reduction target of 80% CO2 (on 1990 levels) by 2050. The UK government and European commission’s growing agenda for the enablement of the greening of industry has resulted in the emergence of new Building Regulations, green technology accelerators such as RHI and the commercial green deal. Also part of this is the introduction of new technologies, at all stages of the project life-cycle. And there is more – the implementation of Energy labelling to energy related products across the HVAC industry is currently underway. The UK and northern European markets are amongst some of the most heavily legislated in the world when it comes to the HVAC industry. The regulatory horizon will see amendments to the Building Regulations; the introduction of energy labels for water heating equipment; the tiered approach to emission reductions taking full effect from 2015 and beyond (under the guidance of ERP) There is such a blizzard of mandatory information that it is a job in itself to keep up with it all – and all in addition to maintaining and servicing existing customers and, winning new contracts. There is a pressing need, I believe, for complete and transparent harmonisation of key product parameters and measurements to ensure simple and accurate communication. This need can be answered in the form of a centralised body – or council of existing bodies and organisations - which can co-ordinate all the information swirling around on industry topics which are of such major importance. The body or council whichever wishes to take up the baton - should represent
the information needs of the contractor, consultant, end-user, and property owner and manager. There is an overwhelming need for one recognised source delivering clear and concise information on all current and impending legislation. Manufacturing corporations can also make a difference bearing in mind that the marketplace needs ready-to-go products that obviously meet and exceed all existing legislation as well as pending legislation and new practises. This is where innovation is critical and manufacturers should truly commit to the research and development of new products and methods to make installation quicker and easier, and product performance better vestige of life from modes of seriously outdated provisions of water heating in the commercial and residential arenas, not in today’s mercurial marketplace. I believe that the industry needs a single body for all the support such an initiative. – now.

40 Bathrooms & Washrooms NOVELLINI SHOWER BASES –LEVEL ACCESS
With over 40 Years experience Novellini is the European and a World leader in the production and manufacture of Shower enclosures and trays, Baths, Whirlpools, Steam Enclosures and Wetroom solutions. In the last decade Novellini has made significant investments into environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and continues to strive towards ever more sustainable holistic production and distribution methods for the future.
Over the years Novellini has continually developed shower trays, being one of the first companies to offer fully engineered large format shower trays in a number of sizes and colours as either low profile or more conventional raised with legs trays - all from UK stock.
With the Olympic Plus shower tray - Novellini was one of the first manufacturers of large format shower trays to reintroduce the production of textured shower floor surfaces. For many years the Olympic shower tray by Novellini has been the only slip resistant (non- enamelled) product in the European bathroom market.
Novellini realised the importance of a more engineered shower tray from an early stage and pioneered the use of innovative materials and fabrication methods in the Olympic Plus shower tray, which today is still one of the strongest and most stable large format shower trays. The Metal reinforced composite construction, now also used in the new Custom tray, means that (unlike many low profile resin stone products), Novellini trays arrive On-site Flat and ready to install.
In recent years Novellini has developed the UK s leading Wetroom and tanking product, with solutions to suit both timber and concrete installations. The Novellini Wetroom systems allow designers to create uncluttered, lowmaintenance, spacious, level access & fully tiled shower spaces

IN OR ON THE FLOOR –The Novellini Custom Tray can be installed on the floor as a low level conventional shower tray or placed directly onto joists to achieve a flush level-access solution without the need for any further fixing frames. (in addition a raised tray with a void for plumbing including legs is available for surface plumbing)
UK STOCK COLOURS AND SIZES – The Novellini Custom Tray is available in White, Grey, Black & Beige from UK Stock and there are 18 basic sizes – in addition each Custom Tray can be adjusted in Length by up to 200mm offering many more sizes than the basic 18.
ANTI-SLIP – The Novellini Custom Tray is available with an optional Factory applied genuine European standard, Certificated, Anti-slip which is applied to the top surface of the tray - leaving a 10cm Border around the edge so that any Silicone beading is applied to an easily cleaned gloss surface. EASY 2 CLEAN – The Novellini Custom tray IS easy to clean! The materials used for the Custom shower tray are designed to be cleaned by conventional household bathroom cleaning products, including lime-scale cleaners and bleach. (The Anti-slip is a rough surface and will potentially hold grime and lime-scale – chemical cleaners will be required and unlike enamelled steel surfaces the materials used for the Custom Tray are not adversely affected.)
HIGH FLOW SHOWER WASTE – The Novellini Custom Tray has a specially designed shallow trap waste with a 50 litre/min flow rate. The Waste cover is completely flush with the surface of the shower tray, is easily removed for cleaning and is made from high grade stainless steel which, unlike a chromed waste cover, will not discolour or peel if in contact with bleach or lime-scale cleaning products. ROBUST
Novellini shower trays are built to last. Olympic and Custom shower trays arrive On-site in their own individual secure packaging which protects them from most handling accidents, avoiding chips and knocks, (a fairly common problem with enamelled steel products). The composite steel reinforced construction ensures that the trays arrive flat and ready to install; they are not subject to the warping, (which is quite likely with low profile resin-cast products).
CUT TO SHAPE – 200mm of one end of the Novellini Custom shower tray is designed so that if required the Custom tray can be cut to fit around a Soil Pipe Boxing for instance or perhaps an Out of True wall?.....

DICKIES KEEP HANDS SAFE Dickies, in collaboration with Kong, have carefully developed a new range of safety gloves, including Impact gloves with a glove to suit the most demanding of environments and tasks. The Dickies glove range is intended to offer something across a wide range of industrial sectors: construction, engineering, automotive, utility, mining and oil & gas. Dickies Impact gloves are manufactured from a wide range of carefully selected materials all combining to provide optimum safety, comfort and dexterity.
For decades there have been major advances in the improvement of safety products. With respiratory more suitable facemasks. Eyewear has also seen a great deal of evolution from the days of basic traditional “safety specs”. Adjustment in temples, nose bridges and even the means of attachment with the all-important lens technology, including prescription and functionality resulting in reductions in slips, trips and falls. Better-designed sole units, insole technology and now innovative closure systems all make the worker’s life safer and more practical. Gloves now are improving dramatically, from very simplistic polka dot work gloves or the traditional “rigger” gloves, to highly engineered ergonomically 3D designed items with account for anywhere from 50% to 70% of work related injuries which make this area perhaps more important than others when it comes to reducing injuries and accidents at work. Obvious injuries like bruising, cuts and crushing are common in industry, but there are other less obvious injuries caused, for example, by the continual use of power tools like drills or jackhammers, which in extreme cases can cause hand arm vibration syndrome. This is an irreversible but avoidable condition with nerves, blood vessels, and joints in the hand and wrist all possibly affected, often resulting in a permanent numbing or tingling sensation along with a loss of grip, strength and dexterity in the hand for everyday life. Outdoor workers will compound this even more and run the risk of it being aggravated due to the cold and damp. Workers in all walks of life and industries depend on their hands to perform their tasks and to earn a living. We cannot work without our hands; injuries to the hand mean the loss increase in costs. Serious hand accidents may even lead to the end of a career and having to live with a debilitating Consequential unwanted negative publicity can put a company’s reputation at stake. developer-update.co.uk
Metacarpal injuries are common when the worker’s hand slips and the back of the hand hits another object, severely bruising or even breaking the small bones in the back of the hand. To minimise this, Dickies Impact gloves have shockabsorbing TPR (Thermal Plastic Rubber) ergonomically added as an exoskeleton to the back of the glove and knuckle areas to minimise bruising and breaks. Likewise the protection against pinching and impact bruising. Depending upon the intended end use of the glove, padding and shock absorbent material, or Duraclad Rope Channel reinforcement, can be added to the palm. Other materials, such as foam nitrile, allow for an excellent grip. An EN 388 cut level 5 knit (ANSI/ISEA Level 4) can add additional protection. Waterproof variants are also available, as is a patented Diamond clad Silicone fused palm (Patent D568003), for the ultimate grip on wet and oily objects. High visibility options are also available in the range. The most incredible part of these Dickies gloves however is the immediately apparent when trying on a Dickies impact glove. Dickies gloves are highly engineered, ergonomically 3D designed items with multi measurement points and when pulling on via the specially designed TPR Cuff puller tab in some variants, the embracing Tricot or Cut Resistant liner welcomes the hand. Some models have an adjustable synthetic suede fourchette. These gloves not only make the job safer but also make it easier and improve the quality of the job making them a sensible investment. Working platforms/ wind turbines
The Roads and Pavements business area offers innovative geosynthetic products, systems and solutions for traditional highway engineering applications. This area is broken down into the Base Reinforcement and Asphalt Reinforcement segments.
The erection of wind turbines frequently places enhanced requirements on the surrounding subsoil. To reach the work location, heavy goods consignments need to be carried safely across very soft ground. For secure installation of the wind power systems, it is essential to prevent any settlement of the crane base that may jeopardise the crane’s stability.
Permanent roads and pavements
The Base segment focuses on unbound, geosynthetic reinforced roadbase and subbase courses. Our products deliver an economical reinforcement solution wherever the subgrade exhibits inadequate bearing capacity for a sound foundation.
For the long term prevention of deformation in pavement surfaces, the reinforcement must be capable of resisting excessive strain throughout the service lift of the structure. Thanks to their high alkali resistance, Fornit® geogrids are the ideal choice where reinforcement is installed in alkaline environments, e.g. where crushes concrete is used as the base material.
The unbound layers of roads, paths and other pavements are subject to stringent requirements in terms of bearing capacity. Here, geosyntheticsbased systems are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to standard techniques such as soil replacement or cement/lime stabilisation. Base Reinforcement can be used on the following applications: Reinforcement of temporary roads To reach building sites, construction vehicles often negotiate. Site access roads built on soft ground can be made reachable through the incorporation of highmodulus HUESKER BASE geogrids. The direct developer-update.co.uk
