Mitton Group to Provide M&E Services for Enviro Building Solutions In a move designed to enhance levels of efficiency, sustainability and quality, mechanical and electrical services specialists Mitton Group have entered into a new partnering agreement with modular and portable building company Enviro Building Solutions. The agreement will see Mitton provide mechanical and electrical services for buildings designed and constructed by Enviro Building Solutions across the UK. Enviro Building Solutions have been designing and constructing modular buildings for over 30 years, serving sectors including healthcare, education, retail and commercial. With the business seeing significant growth and projects becoming larger and more complex, the company was looking to partner with an established and responsive M&E specialist capable of designing and installing high quality, sustainable mechanical and electrical services to match customer requirements. Bespoke modular building solutions are continuing to increase in popularity, particularly for applications and environments where short lead times are an important consideration. They provide a real alternative to more

traditional building methods, offering not just significant cost savings but also real benefits in terms of reduced time to occupation, minimal on-site disruption, a safer working environment and sustainability. The two companies are also geographically close, with Enviro Building Solutions operating as modular building manufacturers from their base in Halifax, West Yorkshire, and Mitton Group headquartered in Bradford. First fix will be completed in Halifax before Mitton teams attend on site to complete and commission each individual project. “Partnering with Mitton Group ensures we and our clients have access to the highest quality M&E services. The proximity of their head office to our manufacturing site is an added bonus, whilst we will benefit from the convenience of their operational depots across the UK when completing work on site,” stated Jonathan Collins for Enviro Building Solutions. “Our new partners produce a premium quality product designed to provide answers for a range of accommodation requirements. Their professional approach matches our own commitment to quality and performance at every stage of the project,” said Mitton director Jonny Knowles.

Rise in Mobile Plant Could Pose Compliance Risk, Warns Bureau Veritas Following significant growth in the use of Mobile Plant equipment in the UK, Bureau Veritas is warning firms to be vigilant when it comes to achieving compliance. It comes as the UK Mobile Elevated Working Platform (MEWP) rental market increased by 4% year-on-year, with demand outstripping the rest of Europe by two to one[1]. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998*, users of work equipment have a responsibility to ensure that the plant or asset is safe to use. Regulations state that regular inspections must be carried out by a competent person and documented. In some cases there are additional regulations to consider, such as the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 1998*, which covers all work equipment for lifting and lowering loads. According to Bureau Veritas, the rise of MEWP use and potential confusion around responsibility for the equipment could pose a compliance risk. Shaezar Karim, Director for the Statutory Inspection division for Bureau Veritas UK, explains: “The growth in MEWPs has led to inevitable compliance challenges, stemming from contractors hiring assets and being able to transport them around the UK.

“Meeting statutory obligations for mobile plant and equipment can be a logistical nightmare – and that’s if users are even aware of their obligations. Many mistakenly believe it is the sole duty of the hire company to undertake PUWER and LOLER inspections but it is the user who must ensure that thorough examinations and inspections are carried out in line with the regulations. “Organisations that face difficulties in overcoming the logistical challenges of mobile equipment inspections and therefore meeting their obligations, are at risk of costly fines, so it’s critical they ensure that the location of an asset does not affect their compliance.” Bureau Veritas has a dedicated Mobile Plant Unit to deliver on-hire inspections; helping clients meet the logistical challenges of meeting statutory obligations for Mobile Elevated Working Platform (MEWP), lifting and crane equipment when hired out to contractors. The unit enables Bureau Veritas industry-recognised specialists to meet the demands of clients across a wide range of sectors, including construction, insurance, aerospace, automotive and facilities management.

Green light for £150m Bolton Church Wharf regen plan Muse Development’s £150m proposals to transform the Church Wharf area of Bolton have got the planning thumbs up. City councillors have granted outline planning permission for the scheme, which would create a new riverside neighbourhood in the heart of Bolton town centre. Church Wharf plans include a mix of 352 homes, an 80-bed hotel and 130,000 sq ft of offices and leisure. The planning application also includes an emphasis on open space and landscaped areas, which will conserve

the distinctiveness and character of the new neighbourhood. Initial demolition work is set to take place on the Church Wharf intervention site over the coming weeks. The Late Club and Club Ice building, which is owned by Bolton Council, will be demolished over a period of 16 weeks by specialists J Freeley.

David Burkinshaw, Muse Developments, said: “Church Wharf is the first project of this scale to be brought forward under Bolton Council’s wider plan to regenerate the town centre” Bolton Council director of place, Gerry Brough, added: “We’re one step closer to achieving our vision in our £1.2bn masterplan. “Church Wharf is fundamental to the regeneration of Bolton town centre. This decision now paves the way for the finer details to be worked through. “This scheme will unlock an underused piece of land, creating new housing, hundreds of jobs and bringing a mix of people back into the town centre.”

Mates in Mind striving alongside B&CE to transform apprentices’ mental health Having been awarded the B&CE’s Mowlem Award grant in 2018, Mates in Mind have launched their Apprentices’ Mental Health Survey to support improvements in the mental health of apprentices across the construction and related industries Joscelyne Shaw, Director of Strategy at Mates Mind, said: “Mates in Mind are striving to improve apprentices’ mental health because we understand that the challenges of poor mental health are affecting young people across our industries. As reported by the World Health Organisation (WHO), half of all mental illnesses begin by the age of 14, and three-quarters by mid-20s. Moreover, poor mental health can have an impact on future generations, contributing further to cycles of inequality and ill health that may run through some families. Using the funding provided by the B&CE, Mates in Mind have launched their Apprentices’ Mental Health Survey. The results of the survey will provide us with insights and an evidence base about apprentices’ mental health from which we will develop a programme tailored to their needs and responding to their concerns.

To support our current apprentices’ initiative Mates in Mind are also promoting a poster created by Colin Orr, the British Safety Council’s 2018 poster competition winner, whose ‘Image of wellbeing’ illustrates how depression among young people can manifest itself. “With our work across the construction industry now reaching over 188,000 workers through our 210 Supporter organisations, we are striving to provide apprentices and young people with the best starting point at the beginning of their careers,” says Joscelyne Shaw. Mates in Mind would like to appeal to all UK employers, colleges and apprentices’ schemes to encourage their apprentices to take part in our survey. We will be using it to support our work to transform the industry’s approach to mental health.

Crittall launch innovative thermally broken steel window Crittall, the originator of the steel window and the sector’s leading manufacturer, has launched T60 - a highly innovative thermally broken steel window and door system. T60’s slim profiles replicate original Crittall steel windows, combining traditional aesthetics with 21st Century levels of performance. T60 features an advanced high density polyurethane isolator as a thermal barrier. This, together with housing high performance double or triple glazing up to 37mm wide, ensures the system surpasses the requirements of current regulations while at the same time providing contemporary levels of comfort, particularly in harsher weather conditions where traditional steel windows may not have previously been sufficient. Market-leading weathertightness performance has been tested to European and ASTM Standards. As with all Crittall products, T60 is corrosion protected and finished with Duralife, an architectural grade polyester powder coating. Its slim sightlines maximize the benefit of natural daylight thereby reducing reliance on artificial lighting. Each frame is fully welded enhancing strength and durability. The inherent strength of steel gives peace of mind in respect of robustness and security, boosted by optional multi-locking. A wide range of opening configurations are available. Traditional aesthetics ensure T60 can be specified with confidence for Listed buildings or properties in Conservation areas. The clean, slender design is ideally suited both to restoration work and new build projects and T60 is expected to be specified for a full range of market sectors, including offices, health, education and hotels.

The importance of buying from your local independent merchant Many tradespeople and customers alike have become accustomed to using large retailers and online merchants. But what about the great British independent retailer? You might be surprised to hear that, alongside unrivalled service and unbiased, honest advice, your shopping basket at the end of your visit is likely to be cheaper! Buying locally is something being promoted across many sectors as a way (amongst many other things) to help boost the UK economy. The IPG was formed in 2013 with one mission; to bring independent plumbing, heating and bathroom specialists together, and in turn, to give their customers the opportunity to buy great brands locally at the best prices. They have partnered with some of their members to share the various benefits of buying from an independent: 1) Expert knowledge - the information and advice offered to you will be unbiased and specifically tailored to your project and needs, peace of mind at its best. Trevor Moore, Director of Splash Plumbing & Heating Ltd, commented: “I stock certain products at my Reading branch, because I know my customers and I know there is a need for it in the area, whereas I recognise in my Egham branch there are different needs and I can tailor the stock accordingly.” 2) Friendly service - projects can be complicated, and sometimes things can go wrong. Having the option of visiting or picking up the phone to your local independent store, where you will find an expert on hand to help solve many dilemmas, quickly and efficiently, can be a life-saver.

Justin Protheroe of WMI Simpsons, commented: “It’s not just about the price, it’s about the service. Even to the point where people can ring you up outside of hours (if they’re in trouble) and you can go to the shop and give them what they need - we do that and that’s a huge advantage to many of our customers.” 3) Supporting your local economy often a common myth is that buying from an independent merchant will be more expensive, however in most cases, this just simply isn’t true. Independent merchants also recycle a much larger share of their revenue back into the local economy, creating jobs and investing in their staff, enriching the whole community. Steve Bates of Aquadart, an IPG supplier commented: “Customers buying from an independent merchant are extremely important to our business, as again independent stores support the local economy by creating jobs and providing a more personal and professional service.”

4) Stock and products - an independent merchant will go above and beyond to source the most efficient, cost-effective products - with a quick turnaround. Guaranteeing a broader range of products, ensuring that your best interests and individual needs are the priority. Ross Pavey, Finance Director at Gasbits, commented: “We often see people coming to us after visiting a larger chain, having not got the advice or product they needed. At the end of the day, if we don’t get it right, we haven’t done our job properly and that isn’t what we want. We always go the extra mile to help our customers get what they need with solid advice in the timeline required.”

can make the decision. In my experience, they can make the call there and then, independents are very quick and fast-paced, and it is personal.” Nike Lovell, Head of Marketing at The IPG, concluded: “We have a growing network of over 200 independent merchants, who pride themselves on being able to offer an in-depth, knowledgeable service. Often, the relationships created between our members and their customers go beyond purchases, in many cases, they become trusted advisors and friends.” You can find out more about The IPG (and find one of their 200+ merchant member stores near you) via their website,

The advantages of buying from an independent are clear, not only are they more competitive in terms of price, but for them it’s about more than just the price, it’s more than the service, it’s about the fact that independents are there to help their customers. Justin Protheroe of WMI Simpsons, concluded; “Have you heard the old terminology ‘the computer says no’? That doesn’t happen with us and I don’t think that happens with any independent merchant because you are talking to the guy who

CRL Langle Al-Wall system: a transparent glass skin as all-weather protection Showcasing natural wood in its most beautiful and durable form while providing all-weather protection, the patented CRL Langle Al-Wall system plays an important part of the construction of a timber house set in the heart of Germany’s Black Forest. As much a part of the scenery as the trees and mountains it is set against, the four-level building in the German city of Freiburg is an extraordinary construction consisting of glass and wood sourced from regionally grown trees. While the landscape is undoubtedly beautiful, the weather can be harsh with relentless wet seasons giving way to strong sunlight during the dryer months. A double faced, highly weather-proof glass frontage formed with the CRL Langle Al-Wall system ensures the building is protected all year round and for many years to come. The system is back ventilated and covers the wood while enabling the energy efficient and ecologically sound building to remain completely visible, permanently guarding against greying and atmospheric conditions. Overlapping glass tiles are used on the main weather side to provide extra protection, while a UV-cover foil prevents the wood frontage from fading due to the strong sunlight. Ease of installation was a huge advantage for the building’s architects Werkgruppe Lahr, who studied the character and particular language of traditional Black Forest houses carefully before finalising the design. The system is simple to install with a clever clip design fixing the individual glass panels. It doesn’t require any glass cut-outs, yet ensures a safe ventilation of the building and guards against the elements, with a premium coated weather proof aluminium. “We just couldn‘t imagine covering such an attractive wood house with plaster. The wish for a transparent weather cover generated the idea for the glass skin,” a spokesman from the architectural practice commented. “Due to the horizontal and vertical overlap and proper ventilation of the facade it is a highly effective protection against wet weather conditions, including driving rain.” The CRL Langle Al-Wall system made the use of wood internally and externally not only possible, but simple. “We didn’t need any glass bores for the fixation system und the scale halters were easily fixed,” explains the project’s master carpenter and operations manager. “Due to the soft angles and the shape of the construction body of the glass skin a crystalline effect evolves. The glass skin reflects light and shimmers depending on the angle of light which is a delightful change from the usual effect of facades that creates a new and exciting characteristic.” For more details and for bespoke projects, contact CRL’s technical advisers on 01706 863600.

Platform lift scores at Burnham The Burnham Association of Sports Clubs (BASC) is just North East of the town of Burnham-On-Sea in Somerset offering opportunities for playing sports to the local community. When the 2 storey rugby clubhouse was built in the late 1970s, the bar area was located at first floor level so that the spectators could get a good view of the first team rugby pitch. As members have got older, the staircase access to the floor has become more challenging and a decision was made to install a platform lift to enable easy access. Ability Lifts, were contacted to provide expert advice and installation services for a suitable lift. After an initial site inspection, their Optimum 100 platform lift was recommended as the best option. The lift was specified with automatic opening glazed doors, an emergency stop function as well as an intercom system so that users can speak with the staff working behind the first floor bar just in case there was a problem.

The lift was supplied with a white, durable powder coated finish to blend in with the existing décor, whilst installation was completed in less than two days. In order to provide years of trouble free service, the association also took up the option of a 5 year servicing contract. Since the lift has been in operation, it has been in constant use whenever the clubhouse has been open. The customer, Neil McKen had the following comment. “Members, supporters and guests comment on how good a facility the lift is to have. This achievement should see the clubhouse itself being hired out on a more regular basis and so bring in much needed additional income which, in turn, should safeguard the sustainability of our sports complex for years to come.” Please contact the Ability Lifts team on 0845 006 8803 or email for further information on the Optimum 100 and the other products in the Optimum range of lifts.

Increased property value

Bi-folds are a popular addition to homes and are desirable for new buyers seeking out a property purchase.

When it comes to replacing sliding sash timber windows in high profile, listed or conservation area properties, the received wisdom is that only timber frames are acceptable. The PVC-U Vertical Slider from specialist fabricator, Mercury Glazing is proving the received wisdom is not always right. Commonly termed as ‘heritage’ products feature-rich window products such as vertical sliders and flush casement products replicate the aesthetics of yesteryear and have gained acceptance in the replacement and heritage markets where once timber was the only option. The rise in demand from both retail, refurb and new build markets too has further opened up the opportunities and demonstrates that the market is shifting toward higher value products across all sectors. This shift can be perfectly illustrated in recent high-end refurbishment project where we helped transform an iconic hotel into luxury seafront apartments Mercury Glazing manufactured and supplied 204 PVC-U vertical sliding windows for the sympathetic landmark refurbishment of Cliff House, a former iconic hotel in Felixstowe, into 24 one and two-bedroom luxury seaside apartments.

Adding value with PVC-U ‘heritage’ products

Doors, Windows & Architectural Hardware 29 Working with main contractor and developer, Dragon Wood Homes, the twelve-month project involved the manufacture and supply of 204 bespoke windows which included a mixture of arched top vertical sliders, bowed vertical sliders, circular windows and standard vertical sliders. The windows were manufactured from Spectus’ vertical sliding and Elite 70 window systems and were produced in white woodgrain foil finish on both sides. Dating from 1906 and originally constructed as a prestigious 100 room cliffside hotel, Cliff House sits in a conservation area. Due to permitted development rights, the restoration needed to remain as sympathetic as possible to the former property in order to retain the building’s original features including the original sash windows. Paul Whyman of Dragon Wood Homes said: “Due to the age of the building and differing window styles needed, we needed to work with a fabrication partner who could deliver the bespoke energy-efficient windows needed while achieving the right balance from a conservation point of view. Mercury Glazing are an established specialist fabricator and as such, their products combined with the cutting-edge technology more that met these exacting standards. The quality of the products was superb and we are delighted with the overall high-quality result.” As one of Spectus’ largest vertical slider fabricators and the first fabricator to manufacture their new mechanically jointed version, Mercury has a proven track record in VS manufacture. The mechanically jointed option offers the impeccable authenticity of timber jointing. This design sits alongside other features such as sash profiles with authentic sightlines, sash horns that are part of the sash, Astragal bars that are milled for a perfect fit, deep bottom rails, traditional ovolo styling and traditional box sash dimensions. Dedicated ancillaries, end caps and cills offer endless options for a perfect fit while a choice of 28 foil colour finishes from the Spectrum colour range help to recreate the perfect period look. Alongside the authentic heritage looks you also get the reassurance of 24mm double glazing as standard and the ability to achieve U values as low as 1.3W/m2K and a Window Energy Rating up to Band A+. Features such as reliable spiral balance mechanisms, tilt inward sashes that make cleaning easy and travel stops that add an extra level of safety all combine to create a feature-rich window that adds value at every stage. Our classic standard vertical slider is a cost-effective option for customers looking for an alternative to traditional timber sliding windows. They also offer optimal thermal efficiency: the 24mm units ensure an overall A+ energy rating as standard. Customers can choose moulded or run through horns, there is a choice of cill depths and glazing options in the form of Georgian glazing bars or the more common astragal bar, which has mitred joints to enhance the heritage appearance. There is a Secured by Design option which has extra built in security features with no compromise on the heritage looks.

Here at Mercury Glazing we are proud that our PVC-U products have been accepted for use in many high-end, listed and conservation properties. We are delighted our products have helped transform these iconic buildings but at the same time we value the heritage of these properties and would never advocate installing a standard PVC-U window into an architectural gem. But when you have a range of beautiful authentic PVC-U vertical sliders that have been sensitively designed for use in refurbishment projects, you have a genuine alternative to timber. This is one of the many reasons that Mercury Glazing have become the go-to partner for contractors and developers throughout the UK.

30 Doors, Windows & Architectural Hardware by developing Husky Soft Stop – a far superior version of the product boasting a built in dual soft close and opening mechanism. Andrew Royle, Sales and Marketing Director at P C Henderson, commented “Soft stop mechanisms in sliding door hardware solutions are becoming expected as standard in the industry. We’ve taken one of our most popular and dependable systems and created a next generation version - whilst still upholding the robust and high quality manufacturing standards which has made it so prevalent today”.

P C Henderson Release New Husky Soft Stop Sliding Door Hardware Sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer, P C Henderson, is pleased to announce the launch of its latest innovative hardware solution to the market. The company’s new Husky Soft Stop product caters for sliding doors weighing up to 100kg and comes complete with dual soft close and open – providing a next generation product to the company’s existing Husky sliding system. P C Henderson’s existing Husky sliding system has become renowned in the industry as a reliable, cost effective sliding door solution for interior applications. The company has built on this success

The system comes pre-assembled and is concealed within the track upon installation – providing an extremely minimalistic finish. Purposefully developed in five kit variants for different weight ranges, the product is tuned to ensure optimum performance and smooth operation every time – whether operating a 10kg or 100kg door. “The system catches the door in its final moments of travel and gently pulls it into its final position. What this results in is an extremely sophisticated system which also provides a host of practical benefits - zero slamming, silent operation and improved product longevity. The product is also one of our easiest systems to install – the soft stop damper comes preassembled so there’s very little for the installer to do”, continued Andrew. Husky Soft Stop is available for wooden and metal doors, providing dual soft close and open for doors weighing up to 80kg and soft close only for doors weighing up to 100kg. The kit is supplied with everything required to hang a sliding door – only the track must be specified separately – providing customers with the freedom to cater for any opening width. For bi-parting doors, two kits can be used together. View more information at

StoVentec Glass Rainscreen System Chosen For National Museums Scotland Project In Edinburgh The StoVentec Glass Rainscreen System supplied by Sto UK was chosen for a museum collections centre extension project in Edinburgh, thanks to its outstanding aesthetic properties and its durable nature. The black infused colour StoVentec Glass was installed on the new extension to the National Museums Collection Centre in Granton, Edinburgh.

A StoVentec Glass Rainscreen System was chosen for this extension to the National Museums Collection Centre in Edinburgh, thanks to its outstanding aesthetic properties and durable nature. The StoVentec Glass Rainscreen System supplied by Sto UK was chosen for a museum collections centre extension project in Edinburgh, thanks to its outstanding aesthetic properties and its durable nature. The black infused colour StoVentec Glass was installed on the new extension to the National Museums Collection Centre in Granton, Edinburgh.

“The system has an adjustable sub-construction which allows for levelling to accommodate uneven substrates,” adds a spokesman for Coatbridge-based MetalTech, who installed the StoVentec rainscreen system on the Edinburgh project. “This allows the prefabricated panels to be installed quickly and easily, without any need for wet trade requirements, and that helps speed up the installation process.”

“We were looking for a rainscreen cladding system that would help harmonize the new extension with the existing building, and the StoVentec Glass system offered the perfect solution”, explains Francesco Di Domenico of Edinburgh-based Hypostyle Architects. “The original building features blue engineering bricks with a stacked bond. Rather than attempt to recreate that appearance, we wanted the look of the extension to be different, and yet sympathetic at the same time, and by using the StoVentec Glass panels in a staggered configuration we were able to achieve that.

“We were impressed by the rugged and hardwearing nature of the Sto system, but its reflective appearance was also important,” concludes Francesco Di Domenico. “This helps the building to blend with its surroundings by reflecting both them, and the original museum building it is connected to.”

“The Sto solution also offered glass panels in a number of bespoke sizes which would allow us to continue the geometric visual of the brickwork, but also create a new contemporary appearance. Being available in black made it the perfect complement to the dark blue bricks of the original museum, as it blurred the boundaries and helped to harmonize the two buildings.” When used as an external rainscreen cladding system, StoVentec Glass provides effective thermal insulation for the façade by creating a ventilated cavity which keeps the wall dry and allows it to breathe. It can also be used to create a highly attractive bespoke finish for each individual project, with panel sizes and shapes manufactured to fit specific design requirements. StoVentec Glass can also be used as an internal decorative option.

Available in a full range of RAL and custom colours, the StoVentec glass panels can also be screen printed with bespoke logos or designs, further extending the tremendous design possibilities it offers. As the colour is fused on the back of the glass, before a toughening process, the permanent coloured glass panels will not wear, scratch, fade or incur water damage. The StoVentec Glass panel has a reaction to fire classification of Class ‘O’ (England, Wales & Northern Ireland) or ‘low risk’ (Scotland) as defined in the documents supporting the National Building Regulations. StoVentec Glass is also supported by full BBA certification (Certificate 10/4792) and has extensive impact and blast testing approvals. The National Museums Collection Centre is an internationally significant facility for the research, conservation and storage of Scotland’s wide-ranging national collections. The new development will enhance the space and scope for scientific, conservation and research activity at the Centre.

36 Bathrooms & Washrooms

How developers can create demand through intuitive bathroom design Rob Holroyd, contracts manager at bathroom and tile retailer, Easy Bathrooms, explains how housebuilders can create bathrooms that appeal to the target buyer… It’s no secret that bathrooms and kitchens sell homes – and it’s not really any surprise. People demand quality spaces where they can relax in beautiful surroundings – and ‘good enough’ just doesn’t cut it. Only ‘perfect’ will do. And installing premium tiles, high quality furniture, high-tech heating and modern fittings is a sure-fire way to get a development noticed.

A number of other factors also make the bathroom a more desirable place to spend time – helping clients to picture themselves living in the property. Mirrors with Bluetooth speakers, for example, are growing in demand, while soft-closing, rimless toilets create a peaceful, relaxing setting.

Of course, what a developer should fit depends on the target audience. Patterned, geometric and textured tiles are ideal for capturing the attention of millennials, for example, while grey, slate tiles with matching grout are a good solution for a busy, young family – where time for cleaning is limited. Paying close attention to the target customer offers an opportunity to install tiles which will grab their attention. There are plenty of ways to inspire buyers with creative storage options. For example, vanity units with drawers are always a handy solution for cleaning and beauty products. A wall-hung unit is ideal for creating the illusion of space in a small bathroom, while, conversely, a floor-standing unit offers more storage room. Adding a matching tall cabinet can also tie the bathroom scheme together and create a sleek space, hiding customers’ clutter and products. Alternatively, adding alcoves into the wall, next to the shower, will offer a modern storage solution which maximises every inch of space and creates a sense of calm.

Safety and accessibility are also playing an increasingly important role in bathroom design. Choosing a thermostatic shower, which reduces the risk of scalding; and installing textured floor tiles, which minimise the possibility of slipping, will show potential customers that every inch of the room has been carefully considered – and that the builder understands their needs as a buyer.

Offering a bespoke service can make the difference between securing a sale and losing it – because customers now demand breadth of choice. It can also pose an opportunity to earn more on the property. Easy Bathrooms offers trade discounts to housebuilders. Rob Holroyd 0113 451 0555

Viu/XViu- In the bathroom of the future Duravit and sieger design present a complete bathroom range - Viu ceramics and XViu furniture plus matching bathtubs – which exudes forward-looking design. The post-industrial elegance of the pieces emerges from the interaction of soft, organic forms with a precise geometric detailed finished. A sharply defined contrast arises from surfaces that combine the finest ceramics, glass and metal with matt lacquers or high-quality woods. The new range includes the entire bathroom: the washing, bathing and toilet area. Significant design features and special details re-occur throughout and are the defining elements of the harmonious interior design. The highlight is a washing area based on the patented Duravit c-bonded technology. The exterior is a strict rectangle, while the interior features gentle organic curves with a spacious inner basin and generous shelf. The edge running along the tap platform continues creating an outer line. The subtle detail of the horizontal overflow within the basin underlines the horizontal alignment of the external shape. The ceramic on the inside is reminiscent of the softness of water. Some surprising details: The white ceramic cover of the push-open valve is flush with the inner basin in the open position. The prominent contour of the supporting metal console with its V-shape profile in elegant Champagne Matt or avant garde Black Matt creates dynamic interest. Uniquely individual combinations can be created thanks to the glass shelf which is available in four colours. From a different angle, the threedimensional feet of the metal console are visually transformed into fine lines. This level of perfection extends to the smallest detail. The acrylic panelling on the underside of the basin conceals the fixing structure, cables, and connecting hoses, with the result that the elaborate

Bathrooms & Washrooms 41

technology, for example for the D.1e electronic tap, does not impact the design. Fully glazed from beneath, the Viu washbasins, available in five sizes, as well as a handrinse basin, are also ideally suited as individual solutions. Their shape follows the design of the c-bonded washbasin. The alternative variants for the washing area, with furniture washbasin, built-in washbasin, or above-counter washbasin and matching vanity unit with pull-out compartment or two drawers, feature striking V-shaped lateral aluminium profiles. These are also available in Champagne Matt and Black Matt and lends to the XViu furniture range’s striking contour. Tonal as well as contrasting options can produce different combinations. By using a variety of materials including a range of high-quality real-wood, lacquer and décor finishes you can create a wealth of stylish collections from “Silver” to “Dark”. Door variants in semi-transparent smoked glass are available for tall and semi-tall cabinets, which have technically correct subtle, smooth

hinge straps for a soft opening and closing of the doors. The mirrors and the mirror cabinets with their fully-mirrored sides reflect the individual design language of XViu. The models fitted with a sensor switch offer dimmable lighting and the variant with icon control on the mirror surface, a first for mirror cabinets, also features the ambient light mode and coloured light switching function: at a luminosity of more than 300 lux, the light colour can be continuously adjusted from 2,700 (warm light) to 6,500 kelvin (cold light). Heating is available for all mirrors and a standard feature for icon variants. A further highlight of the XViu series is the free-standing bathtub, which creates an eye-catching centerpiece. Here, too, the prominent metal frame with the familiar V-shaped profile comes in Champagne Matt or Black Matt as a contrast to the high-gloss white acrylic. It supports the free-standing bathtub (two sizes: 160x80 cm and 180x80 cm), which is a precise rectangle when viewed from above. It has an ergonomic and organic free form interior, with a precise

finish and perfect aesthetics. It subtly integrates the outlet, which underlines the sophisticated design. The interplay of the basic geometric shape, with precise lines and optimized gentle inner shape is a key feature of the toilet in the range. Metal push buttons positioned on the sides allow the removal of the seat cover, making cleaning easier. The technically-demanding realisation of the open flushing rim thanks to improved Rimless® technology ensures outstanding flushing performance. SensoWash® Slim is available as an option for the toilet. The combination with the Duravit A2 electronic actuator plate and matching wall-mounted element provides operating comfort of the highest standard. The new D.1 and D.1z faucets, along with the electronic D.1e variant, perfectly match the design. The XViu bathroom programme is available in 34 finishes and combines well with the ceramic series VeroAir, ME by Starck and P3 Comforts. Viu ceramics can also be combined with the XSquare, L-Cube and Brioso furniture series.

Low Temperature Modular CO2 Refrigeration Following the successful delivery of numerous natural refrigeration projects within the health sector, Green Cooling recently provided a Panasonic CO2 Condenser unit supplying a walk-in freezer at an M&S Simply Food franchise located within a large NHS Hospital. For this project Green Cooling provided a system that included a Panasonic 2kW CO2 Condenser unit (2kW at -30C) with RDM control incorporating remote monitoring, along with the cold room structure and associated services. The project was of a significant size and involved the refurbishment of existing areas within the hospitals main entrance to provide an increased level of service for the hospital visitors. Garry Broadbent of Green Cooling commented, “Alongside providing a retail environment that delivers the highest level of service to the hospital, a project of this nature also calls for the most practical, efficient and sustainable refrigeration solution, which is why Green Cooling selected the Panasonic CO2 system to provide real benefits”. Delivering class-leading low temperature efficiency (over 25% more efficient than the previously used F-Gas HFC refrigerant) the Panasonic Condenser units also achieve the lowest noise levels and are importantly provided with a 5-year compressor warranty. In terms of sustainability, the projects natural refrigerant CO2 credentials mean that the installation sits outside the F-Gas refrigerant phase out legislation and regulations. This means from a-users perspective, the installed Panasonic CO2 refrigeration system not only provides the highest levels of efficiency but also future proofs the site against any cost or availability implications resulting from current or future F-Gas legislation. Since its European launch in late 2017, the Panasonic CO2 Condenser range has proven to be attractive to specifiers, with over 250 units now being installed across Western Europe and where a modular approach to medium and lower duty applications is required, as was the case in this application. Neil Bilton, Head of Key Accounts at Panasonic UK further explains more about the benefits, “The Panasonic range has been specifically developed for small to medium capacity applications within the retail and food service sectors and is particularly suited for installations in small supermarkets, convenience stores and garage forecourt retail operations. Furthermore, the range is also ideally suited to provide refrigeration within the restaurant and hotel sectors.”

Project summary: This project successfully delivered a natural refrigeration solution to meet the clients’ sustainability and efficiency requirements. Garry Broadbent of Green Cooling further added “This type of modular installation is typical in terms of the direction that food retail stores and catering facilities are heading. Sustainable food retail refrigeration solutions are now required to future proof the operation of a site and remove any operational risks, resulting from the F-Gas HFC refrigerant phase out legislation, in terms of both refrigerant costs and quota restrictions.” From a legislation and compliance perspective, the use of CO2 in the above installation removed the need on this site for F-Gas reporting and hence there is also no inclusion required within the operators Green House Gas (GHG) report, as no F-Gas refrigerants are utilised. In summary, within this application, the Panasonic CO2 units provided a practical solution which combined the highest levels of efficiency and practicality along with a value-based focus with regards to both capital and whole of life costs. The units are compact, lightweight, have low noise levels (a range of 35.5 dB(A) to 36dB(A)) and designed to fit into smaller spaces with dimensions of (HWD) 930mm x 800mm x 350mm and weighs only 67kg. Panasonic is not new to this product range, having developed the latest version of the Panasonic CO2 Condensing units over time, with over 8,500 units being installed in Japan in approx. 3,700 stores since its launch in 2010 and thus building up essential knowledge and understanding of the end user experience and challenges. This solution helps to overcome some of the major hurdles that small retail outlets encounter with previous solutions that are currently on the market. The Panasonic units offer a stable and reliable system that helps to maximise energy efficiency with a low carbon footprint. Furthermore, the units can be set to run at low and medium temperatures with four initial settings which can be modified by turning a simple and user-friendly rotary switch to further enhance energy savings. infinity 1600 low–nox UNITS & systems making economic sense for commercial & domestic sites Rinnai, the UK’s leading manufacturer of the ErP A-rated Infinity range of continuous flow condensing gas fired water heaters, delivers the most energy efficient range of low-NOx hot water heating units currently available to the UK end user. The company’s low-NOx Infinity HDC 1600e external wall mounted unit (together with the interior HDC 1600i version) utilises Rinnai’s patented pre-mix burner technology with a 14-1 turn down ratio – the largest on the market – of 58.4kw-4.05kw and is extremely quiet in operation. Integral controls on the units enable the water heater to achieve high efficiencies whether locally or integrated into a building management system. In reducing Legionella proliferation, Rinnai has developed additional ‘SMART’ controls for secondary return DHW systems in the form of an advanced temperature control system which allows for safe running of water at 42°C core temperature during the day and 60°C when a building is closed. By the time the building reopens, core temperature is 42°C for safe use. Another Rinnai innovation addresses an age-old industry problem with hot water delivery - lime scale build-up.

The company’s integrated scale control system is an innovative solution and comes in the form of an LC (lime check) code on the display of the controller. The system helps to ensure the performance and efficiency of Rinnai’s 1600, and, all of its continuous flow water heaters installed in hard water areas. Almost all water-fed appliances, including plate heat exchangers, boilers and water heaters will, over time accumulate scale deposits in hard water areas. Ultimately, ongoing use with hard water may shorten the lifespan of conventional water heating appliances and systems. To safeguard against this Rinnai units continually self-monitor for lime scale deposits around the heat exchanger. If a lime scale build-up is identified, a message is sent to the built-in interface panel on the front of the appliance. The message is displayed as ‘LC’, which alerts the end user to contact a Rinnai service agent to perform a lime scale flush to clear the potentially harmful deposits. This avoids and eliminates the adverse effects associated with lime scale build up, including lower energy efficiencies and potential product de-generation. The industry uptake on Rinnai’s series of low-NOx high efficiency products is that continuous flow heater systems are proven to be more energy efficient than conventional storage systems and are increasingly the experts’ preferred method of hot water provision. Rinnai units easily cater for any size projects that need high volumes of water at intermittent times of day.

The Rinnai Infinity 1600e/i offers condensing technology with up to 107% gross efficiency, ultra-lowNOx of less than 20 ppm, a widely expansive modulation range of 54kW-4kW and high flow rates of 37/ltr/min. Add to these benefits are the peace of mind of an extended warranty, a top A-rating exceeding the demands of eco-labelling legislation, the flexibility of external wall mounting and delivery to site with all relevant accessories and the knowledge that the HDC1600 is future-proofed against future regulatory and legislative changes.

46 Flooring Walton Flooring Centre has been successfully installing all types of floor coverings for their domestic customers for over eight years now, operating from five stores, across the North West. However, the domestic market has seen a slight downturn so the business has responded to this by strategically developing their commercial offer, spreading their risk so they can continue to expand.

Walton Flooring Centre is set to see 50% of its business come from their commercial contracts in 2019, with some of these contracts lasting between three to five years. They find themselves not only fitting flooring in homes but also in hotels, restaurants, for property developers and the public sector and have been working with companies including Magenta, Cobalt, Impel Construction and Countryside Properties. Based on this change in direction for a business that initially set out to be a domestic flooring provider, this year they have launched two e-commerce businesses selling artificial grass and all other types of flooring to their wholesale clients. They are even developing their own product range to service them more efficiently. With a move into larger premises, they can offer further costs savings and next day delivery throughout the UK for stock held in their warehouse. Their move will also see them opening a training academy for flooring installers, to bring new talent into the sector and to upskill their domestic fitters, to the standards required when working in the commercial sector. The training team are partnering with regional Chambers of Commerce and Liverpool City College to highlight the job and career opportunities in the flooring industry and with Walton Flooring Centre itself, due to its growth aspirations.

It is an exciting time for the team, and they are on track to see their business double in size by the end of 2020. The business has received a number of accolades in the past 18 months including DIY Week for their expansion success, Homes & Gardens, as a Liverpool retailer, also winning Business of the Year in the Echo Regional Business Awards programme. A goal now for the business, as well as growing their commercial contracts is to become a leading provider of artificial grass UK-wide. Their Jupiter range is one of the best on the market and comes with a two-year product guarantee. They have seen an unbelievable response to their marketing for this range and have been installing the product in both gardens and inside commercial properties due to its versatility.

Project - The Place Apart Hotel Executive Architects - Archer Humphryes Architects Main Contractor - Cost Consultants Wood Flooring Supplier - The Solid Wood Flooring Company

We were asked by the Cost Consultants to manufacture a chevron board that met the budgetary requirements of their client. We met with the Architects who are Archer Humphryes Architects to ascertain exactly what the clients required and then produced samples. We managed to produce 3 variations and the client confirmed the one they wanted. We received signed control samples back so that we can manufacture what the client wants. Refurbishment of this apartment hotel began in 2017 and the chevron has been designed to fit in with the history of the building. We are also in the process of making matching skirting boards. A PIECE OF MANCHESTER’S HISTORY

Choose your wood floor (click here)

Awarded Grade II listed status by English Heritage in 1998 as an acknowledgment of its important cultural and architectural legacy, this former railway warehouse was built in 1867 during the peak of Manchester’s prominence as the world’s number one centre for the cloth trade. The building is the only remaining of four

warehouses erected by the Manchester & Birmingham Railway Company and was known as the London Warehouse. Also in 1998, the building was transformed into The Place Aparthotel, retaining many of the building’s original features, including the impressively crafted iron, stone and brick work. These can be seen in the original Victorian railings manning the balconies, the barrel ceilings, the stupendous façade and the large, spacious public area which makes The Place unique. In its former life, the building’s interior was dominated by massive cast iron columns supporting large riveted wrought iron beams. This huge, flexible and cavernous construction gave uninterrupted floor space for the movement of cloth. The cast iron columns and other impressive features remain today, including iron girders and the tastefully retained Romanesque window arches, but instead of vast warehouse flooring, the seven storeys now hold 107 apartments, supporting a spectacular atrium where cranes would once have dangled their loads.

Every time a Schiedel product is installed, customers simply need to register the project on dedicated website, Points will be allocated for each install and once 25 points have been earned (easily achieved in as few as four or five installations) they can be exchanged for Love2Shop vouchers, which are valid at over 20,000 retail, food and entertainment outlets throughout the UK; including Boots, Gap, Pizza Express, Alton Towers and many more. Each Schiedel product is worth a different number of points, between 1 and 3 depending on its value. Projects using multiple products will accrue multiple points! Davinder Sangha from Schiedel, said: “Many installers have been using Schiedel’s online guarantee registration system for a number of years now. Our new Loyalty Points Scheme is a new improved version of this - much easier to use, with the added bonus of every installation now accruing points which can be converted into high street shopping vouchers.” Get rewards for your installs! To benefit from the scheme, installers need to log-in to the web page with an email address and password and simply enter information about completed projects. Each Loyalty Points Scheme participant’s installations are recorded so with one click it’s easy to keep track of the points earned and start planning how to use those hard earned vouchers!

New Recruit Reflects Ongoing Growth Of Rhodes & Partners

Structural and civil engineering specialist Rhodes & Partners has recruited graduate engineer Michelle Kiboi, in a move designed to help the company with its growing workload. The company is undergoing a period of carefully managed and sustainable growth, and this is the latest in a series of developments which reflect this growing success.

“We’re delighted to welcome Michelle as a member of our team and we know she’ll make a very valuable contribution to the business,” explains managing director, Nick Ribbeck. “Although we already have a considerable wealth of expertise, we firmly believe in attracting fresh new talent at graduate level, and providing those people with good opportunities for training and development. We’ve found that this allows us to balance the range of ages across our workforce, and benefit from a great combination of the fresh new ideas which younger employees bring, and the experience which our senior staff contribute.” Rhodes & Partners recently revealed that 2018 was a record year for the company, in which it surpassed all previous records for the volume of work which it had handled. “We exceeded our previous record for the number of jobs recorded over a one-year period by 10%,” adds Nick. “Over our 26-year history we have developed a very wide range of professional services, and that allows us to serve customers from right across the board. They know they can turn to us no matter what their requirements, and that we can handle everything from small domestic jobs through to large commercial projects in the residential, retail, leisure, education, heritage and healthcare sectors.” For more details on Rhodes & Partners, please visit, email, or call 0161 427 8388.
