Lewis Visuals is a youthful triple award winning Architectural Practice providing expert services throughout Surrey and beyond. In 2016 we added Ascot and Guildford offices as well as moving to a bigger head office located on East Street in central Farnham. We are getting BIM ready and are since August 2016 producing all our work in 3D Revit Models. Our team consists of nine staff including our Design Director, Architectural Design Manager, five Architectural Technicians and two Sales, Marketing and Admin team members. Axis Automatic Doors Show the Way Onto The Mersey Ferry If you take the Mersey Ferry from Seacombe Ferry Terminal across to the Liverpool Pier Head, you will be protected while in the waiting area by a series of Axis Automatic DuraGlide Sliding Doors. Four of the five automatic doors feature the Stanley SLH Slimline operator that has a small header profile and so is ideal for use either where space is restricted or just for aesthetic reasons. The fifth door is a standard Stanley Dura-Glide SLD operator. At a height of only 117mm the SLH Slimline operator requires a transom bar of just 125mm for mounting and is ideal for applications where a break out facility is not required. The power operated automatic sliding doors can be used as emergency egress doors as a monitored “fly open” battery is installed to open the doors in the event of power failure or fire alarm activation (whilst the doors are unlocked). For safety there is an auto reverse function in both opening developer-update.co.uk

and closing cycles if an obstruction is encountered, all controlled by the new MC521 Pro Controller. This new generation controller is completely re-engineered and includes a “soft-start” “soft-stop” motor driving circuit for smooth normal opening and recycling. The controller has a built-in LAN connection and with a Stanley Bluetooth “dongle” an engineer using a Windows® Mobile handset and readily downloadable software can set door functions, including door and motor type, handing, speed, hold-open delay, troubleshooting and more, all with the greatest precision and ease. It is also very easy to program the control panel manually. The Eco Pro programmer replaces the conventional function switch and provides advanced user-defined automatic scheduling options, basic troubleshooting instructions, and door performance and history. It is intended to provide an integrated means for

two way communication between the door system and the user. The Eco Pro programmer with the 6 position function allows the building occupier to reduce opening widths on larger door systems to save energy in cold or hot weather. The Stanley SLH Slimline automatic sliding door system can operate a single door up to 3100mm or bi-parting doors up to 4300mm. The refurbishment of the 15 year old Seacombe Ferry Terminal waiting area involved the replacement of all the old doors to ensure that neither passenger comfort nor safety is compromised regardless of the weather and to increase reliability and longevity. Dulux Trade has brought a splash of colour to the Blue Cross rehoming centre in Lewknor, Oxfordshire, brightening up its bi-colour play barn with colours specified by the paint manufacturer’s Commercial Design Service.

Coatings Sealants & Paints 19 The centre houses abandoned or unwanted pets, promotes welfare and provides treatment until the animals find a new home. The play barn is used on a daily basis where animals, particularly the centre’s canine residents can play and get exercise. A grassy outdoor play area adjacent to the barn - complete with assault course, sandpit and paddling pool means that when dogs enter the play barn, they bring the outdoors in. The room is subject to constant wear and tear all year round and according to centre manager, Nicola Bishop, the room requires regular cleaning. Dulux Trade specifiers were asked to enhance the room’s aesthetics and give it a makeover that would withstand the dirt and provide a robust scheme to reduce cleaning. What better way to demonstrate the chosen paint’s durability than by testing it with four-legged friends? Cue three of the cente’s cutest dogs, Blue Cross staff, a film crew and the Dulux Trade Commercial Specifier team to put the paint to the test. The Dulux Trade Diamond range of paints, which includes Matt, Eggshell and High Performance Eggshell versions, is well-known for its hard-wearing qualities, allowing a long-lasting finish and an extended maintenance cycle. Many users find that a Diamond finish can retain its original appearance for longer than conventional paints as surfaces can be repeatedly cleaned rather than redecorated, adding up to significant cost savings over the life span of the project. The Test A day to prep the walls and paint a feature wall with Dulux Trade Diamond as well as doors and window frames and the Dulux Commercial Specifier team were ready to prove that Diamond is ‘scuff, scrub and stain resistant’. First to ‘test’ the paint’s capabilities in front of the cameras was Katie, an 18-month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross, who having been for her

morning walk, finished off her playtime with ball games in the play barn. The age-old addage: ‘never work with children or animals’ nearly proved true. Despite coaxing from the camera crew and her handler, Katie clearly likes to keep her environment clean and tidy as she refused to touch the pristine magnolia Diamond-coated walls, much to the surprise of the team. The next canine tester, Mary,an 18-month old Staffie cross with plenty of energy clearly loves the limelight. Mary gave an Oscarworthy performance in just one ‘take’, after merrily splashing outside in the pool. She then bounded into the play barn to continue energetically chasing her toys, happily creating havoc on the Diamond walls. Several paws later, the play barn looked like it does on a typical day with muck and dirt ground into the walls and on the floor. Finally, 13-month old crossbreed Doofus eagerly made his film debut, having rolled around in grass and sand outside. Once inside the Playbarn, he was only too happy to continue playing and helped to create the most mess out of the three dogs.

On The Walls The Dulux Trade Commercial Specifier Team recommended a colourful scheme that reflected the energy and wit of the animals; colours that would also appeal to visitors and the staff who regularly use the Playbarn. Perhaps more importantly, the team also recommended Diamond, recently reformulated to withstand even tougher dirt and stain accidents and to make walls easier to wipe clean, thus reducing the need to regurlarly redecorate. The range was used to provide fresh pops of bright colour in the play barn centering on yellow and blues to create an upbeat and ‘optimistic’ feel to the room. These clusters of colour were used as contrasts to the magnolia side walls. Becky Davidson, Senior Brand Manager at Dulux Trade said: “We chose a bright pop of yellow (60YY 66/487) for the feature walls, with blue and turquoise colours for the adjoining toilet (50BB 18/276) and wash basin walls (90GG38/242) and main door (30BG 15/322). The window alcoves were enhanced with lime green (40YY 61/504) to draw the light in.” Aylesbury-based decorating contractors, A Splash of Colour were tasked with decorating the play barn’s walls, internal door and window trims.

The Ultimate Test With three happy, tired dogs having put the play barn and Diamond through its paces, the Dulux Trade team faced the ultimate test: bringing the walls back to their pristine magnolia condition with some good old fashioned ‘elbow grease’ using just a sponge, soap and water. Diamond’s properties mean that detergent or sugar soap are not needed. Water-based stains on a Diamond surface can be easily removed with just water. 30 minutes later, Diamond lived up to its reputation as one of the most durable paint products available on the market today. Nicola Bishop of Blue Cross said: “Our team were amazed to see that the magnolia walls, which had previously been marked with mud, sand and grass stains, were stainless, clean and bright after what seemed like little effort to wipe them down.”

“There was a particularly green grass stain, which I didn’t imagine they’d be able to remove with just water but I’m so impressed that the paint’s properties made it easy.” So, it seems the Dulux Commercial Specifier team’s choice of product proved a hit with the Blue Cross. Nicola Bishop said: “We were a little skeptical at first that a paint could reduce our maintenance cycles and reduce the time spent in cleaning but since the Play Barn has been painted, several of our staff have reported that they don’t have to spend so much time cleaning the walls. Historic 196 Deansgate in Manchester Adopts Under Floor Air Conditioning AET Flexible Space, leading provider of under floor air conditioning systems, is proud to have been part of the phased refurbishment of the historic building at 196 Deansgate in Manchester. Situated in the city centre on what is probably Manchester’s best known streets with close proximity to Spinningfields, the architecturally stunning building has a Grade II listed façade and has attracted significant interest by potential tenants to its 48,000 sq. ft. over five floors of Grade A office space. The refurbishment required a fundamental rethink to transform the building in decline, into a modern sought after commercial space. Buttress architects managed to revamp the space, removing one of the lifts and creating a visible reception area as well as implementing a new services strategy, using raised access floors and underfloor air distribution. This allowed the ceilings to be exposed and specific architectural features to be retained. The AET Flexible Space system utilises the plenum as the ventilation duct, yet differs to standard underfloor air distribution; offering superior zonal control. As the system utilises the space beneath the raised access floor to distribute conditioned air, this eliminates the need for ceiling based duct work and offers a variety of benefits; for example, allowing architectural features and ceilings to be left exposed. Flowcrete UK Launches Comfort Resins Range Flowcrete UK has launched a new comfort flooring range to provide the developers and designers of commercial and public facilities with finishes that will deliver the necessary practical, aesthetic and budgetary criteria.

The Comfort Resins collection includes the systems Peran Comfort and Peran CHD as well as Flowshield Comfort and Flowshield CHD. These self-smoothing and flexible polyurethane coatings are all able to create a durable, seamless and easy to clean surface that will withstand intensive foot traffic, rigorous cleaning as well as the scuffs, stains and scratches that the floor will face on a daily basis. The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway. As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the

need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or

harsh chemicals enter the unit, try to stick to Eco brands and stagger washing throughout the week.

Standard and Besp Rooflights and The Cill and kerb sections are constructed using 16 and 18 gauge sheet aluminium, which is formed using power guillotines and presses. The fabrication being completed by fully welding joints (where possible) using the T.I.G welding process. Glazing Bars, Rafters, Pressure plates and Cover Caps are in extruded He9TF alloy to BS 1474. PPC remedies poorly painted floor The main methods are; shotblasting, planing, grinding, multi-stripping and cleaning with the type, size and power requirements of the machine chosen determining production rates achievable, together with the accessories selected and the nature, thickness and composition of the material to be removed. All equipment Is attached to either a filtration unit or industrial vacuum to minimise dust contamination.

The Preparation Group’s contracting division, PPC, specialists in solutions for surface preparation, removal and finishing, were contracted to help refurbish the Sobraon Barracks storeroom. The team used its heavy duty Terrco® 701-S Grinding & Polishing machine to remove layers of old floor paint that hadn’t adhered properly, because the original background surface hadn’t been correctly prepared. Preparation is critical to prevent a new floor from failing. Newly laid concrete will have a layer of what is termed laitance, or ‘fat’, on the surface which has to be removed to enable a floor paint, resin, coating etc. to adhere to it. On this project, the 160m2 area comprising of two rooms, was ground using the Terrco® machine to remove the paint and the underlying concrete laitance, with a hand-held grinder completing the edge detail. The Terrco® 701-S machine is easy to control and manoeuvre and effortlessly glides across the surface due to its contra-rotating heads.

The preparation by PPC’s team took one day and delivered a clean ‘profiled’ surface suitable for the application of a new non-slip grey paint. The Preparation Group is an expert in assessing projects and identifying options to remove or prepare the relevant surface, before its contracting team carry out works. Key services include; cleaning concrete, removing lines and paint, reducing levels, removing screeds and coatings, re-instating anti-slip, removal of carpet, vinyl and ceramic flooring, steel preparation and floor polishing. At T.I. Tiles International Dynamic Facades we have identified the requirements of today’s market and continue to develop our Natural Stone systems to ensure we deliver a quality architectural solution whilst engineering out the complexities to ensure an efficient installation. Our stone goes through a patented technological process which is at the cutting edge of the industry. Our panel was developed using vacuum heated resin impregnation and fused fibreglass reinforcement onto the granite, this process offered us a 15mm thick granite panel with the strength and flexural attributes of 60mm thick granite. Given the attributes of granite and its technical qualities, we moved to exploring the next generation of the Aerolite family which was to incorporate Sandstone and Limestone into it. Having previously used Sandstone and Limestone veneers on our Ultralite system, which is a 7mm natural stone veneer bonded to a 20mm thick lightweight aluminium encased honeycomb cassette panel, with this composite principle in mind we then produced and tested a 5mm Sandstone or Limestone veneer to our 15mm thick natural granite system.

We were able to produce a panel in sizes up to 600mm x 1500mm, with an overall thickness of 20mm, once again at the forefront of our thinking was, engineering out the complexities and in doing so we managed to contain the panel weight to comply with the Health and Safety guidelines on repetitive lifting, with the stone to stone bonding we reduced the possible coefficient of expansion differential that can occur in extreme temperatures. The next stage was for the panel to be tested to BS Standards through CWCT test guide lines for Standardized Building Envelopes 2005 including soft and hard body impact testing, wind and water resistance, delamination of bonding through freeze thaw and fire testing. Once we had created our panel we were then able to further develop the system to the point we could achieve preformed corners where the returns were identical in appearance with 40mm-400mm returns, these were joined using a high quality epoxy then filled & dressed, we then add the additional support of a mechanical fixing. Through various consultations with Stone experts and senior members of the British Stone Federation, we were advised for maximum performance and flexibility to use a continuous Kerf groove and our Dynamic Track rail system to give maximum support.
