Don’t Slip Up! SLIP RESISTANT FLOORS
With the amount of legislation and information from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regarding slippery floors and staircases, it’s important to select the right floor coating system. Slip resistance is a function of the grip between two surfaces; for example, the shoe and the floor itself. Whilst it is not always possible to control what people wear on their feet, we can address the issue of the floor. Our first anti slip coatings were designed for boat decks early in the 20th century, an obvious slip hazard area and invariably wet, probably the most severe requirement for an anti slip coating. These coatings also needed to be designed to survive in the most inclement weather conditions, often on ships travelling for example, the Northwest Passage, making their way across the Arctic Ocean. This early requirement has expanded, both in the workplace and from a public liability perspective, companies must be seen to be doing their utmost to reduce slip and fall accidents.
With every floor space being different, there are a number of coatings to cover most eventualities: • Single pack alkyd, air drying coatings • Two pack epoxy floor paint • Two pack epoxy / two pack polyurethane hybrid There are a number of key questions that then need to be answered:• Is the application interior or exterior? • What is the likely footfall or truck usage on the floor? Overall what traffic concentration will it experience? • How long is the coating expected to last? • Where do you require anti slip, is it limited to walkways, machinery operating cells, etc? • Finally, the aggregate is also an important part of the system, ranging from a standard, particle size controlled; silica sand to materials such as aluminium oxide, the second hardest mineral after diamond used for more extreme applications, aircraft hangers, etc. The table detailed below will aid the decision making process.

Traditional Window Refurbishment and Replacement The Sash Window Workshop aims to replicate as closely as possible the proportions and designs of historic windows, whilst incorporating the latest manufacturing techniques. Since they were founded in 1994, they have collaborated with many different builders, architects, contractors, interior designers and developers, carrying out window refurbishment, re-glazing, and the manufacture and installation of new timber windows and doors. The Sash Window Workshop was approached by an interior contracting company who were looking to replace the timber windows and doors for a property in South West London. The company requested new windows and doors which fitted the following specification: • New traditional windows to match the existing style and be period appropriate; • The highest possible thermal and acoustic performance; • The maximum amount of light transmission possible through the glass; • Bespoke window ironmongery.
Upon receiving the request for a quotation, a trained surveyor met with the architect for the project to discuss their requirements and advise how they could help. In total they required over 20 new sash and casement timber windows and 4 new doors. All of the company’s new windows and doors are manufactured from their workshops in Berkshire using the latest in computer operated machinery, alongside the eye for detail of their traditional craftsman. The materials used allow them to produce windows and doors to the highest specifications, giving the best possible performance, combining minimum maintenance with maximum lifespan. During an exclusive launch event, an entirely new and exciting city-based floor plan format was also revealed for the show. Bringing the event’s theme of regeneration to life, Ecobuild 2017 will see ExCeL London transformed into an immersive ‘city’ – complete with main street, distinct destinations and special feature attractions. Central to the experience will be Regeneration Drive, a boulevard running through the middle of Ecobuild, linking different aspects of the exhibition and enabling visitors to experience the very best examples of innovation and creativity from across the built environment. The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway. As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the
need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or
harsh chemicals enter the unit, try to stick to Eco brands and stagger washing throughout the week.

Panic hardware is a vital and important product in the design and installation of exit doors. Designed to allow the safe and speedy exit of personnel down an escape route in the event of a major emergency.
It has been designed to enable the simplest touch of the touch bar or crash bar to operate the door and thereby allow people to escape. New European standards now govern the manufacture and installation of this equipment, as these devices are “Life safety” devices and it is therefore crucial, they are produced in line with the requisite standards and quality requirements. Surface, concealed, rim and latch models are available, but care should be taken when selecting the correct panic hardware, depending on the application required. Whether you like them or not, an essential element of any entrance is a place for a letterbox or letterplate. Your post needs to be delivered one way or another, so here are some points to consider when making decisions about its placement and use: 1. When letterplates are installed onto your door, two things to remember are: The Security Risk: itâ€™s placement too close to the middle of the door could be a security risk - enabling easy access to the lock. Considering the Postman: Our customers are sometimes concerned about the postman having to bend down if they place a letterplate at the bottom of the door. This is entirely a personal choice but letterplates do look more up to date and attractive lower down and out of the way. 2. Letterplates may not be suitable for passive house or zero carbon rated houses with high insulation values because they are a source of heat loss. It is possible to buy certified letterplates however they are not always attractive or contemporary.
Letterplate or not 4. Mail chutes are a solution but are best implemented when the building is being built as they are hard to fit after the fact.
3. The placement of letterplates on timber doorsetswith grooves is important:
A postbox sits on an outside wall, with a tunnel through the wall with an internal basket for the post to fall into on the inside. A very good option for new builds when an abundance of space is available.
If the door is vertically grooved, then the letterplate should be vertical to prevent water rolling down the door and sitting in the grooves where the letterplate is. The same applies if the door is horizontally grooved - the letterplate should be horizontally fitted as well.
5. Creating a special place for the letterplate on the door is another option. This is usually done in the side lite in a dedicated panel at the bottom or middle of the door. The benefit of this is that it is not in the door.
6. Itâ€™s worth noting that if there is a clear glass side lite by your door, there is s security risk if post is left on the doorstep while you are away. Would be burglars will know you are away. 7. Choosing a postbox which is fitted onto an outside wall, means you have to go out to collect your post but does make a lot of the above issues obsolete!! However, your postbox could also get full while you are away and alert burglars that you are not around. Historic 196 Deansgate in Manchester Adopts Under Floor Air Conditioning AET Flexible Space, leading provider of under floor air conditioning systems, is proud to have been part of the phased refurbishment of the historic building at 196 Deansgate in Manchester. Situated in the city centre on what is probably Manchesterâ€™s best known streets with close proximity to Spinningfields, the architecturally stunning building has a Grade II listed faĂ§ade and has attracted significant interest by potential tenants to its 48,000 sq. ft. over five floors of Grade A office space. The refurbishment required a fundamental rethink to transform the building in decline, into a modern sought after commercial space. Buttress architects managed to revamp the space, removing one of the lifts and creating a visible reception area as well as implementing a new services strategy, using raised access floors and underfloor air distribution. This allowed the ceilings to be exposed and specific architectural features to be retained. The AET Flexible Space system utilises the plenum as the ventilation duct, yet differs to standard underfloor air distribution; offering superior zonal control. As the system utilises the space beneath the raised access floor to distribute conditioned air, this eliminates the need for ceiling based duct work and offers a variety of benefits; for example, allowing architectural features and ceilings to be left exposed. The fully conditioned air is introduced into the space via floor recessed fan terminal units; or Fantiles, which are easily relocated within a 600mm raised floor and also feature integrated controllers allowing users to personally adjust temperature and fan speed settings. This flexibility makes it easy and economical to adapt to future changes in the workplace, making it an attractive commercial option for growing businesses. AET originally supplied their unique under floor air conditioning equipment during a partial refurbishment of the upper floors in 2008. In 2016, developer Commercial Estates Group invested ÂŁ2.3 million into the refurb of the reception, first and second floors and recently they secured a five year lease for 4,650 sq. ft. on the fourth floor for Marketing Communications Agency, McCann Manchester.
