Construction Started On New Cefas Headquarters
Construction work is under way at the new £16 million marine science centre in Lowestoft, which will see new headquarters built for the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) at its site on Pakefield Cliffs. The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by funding supporters from Defra and the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, alongside local
councillors, residents, staff and contractors. To commemorate the occasion, a time capsule containing recent Cefas scientific papers, letters to the future from young Cefas apprentices, a reusable water bottle – reflecting organisational commitments to reducing marine plastics, and other artefacts were buried. “I thank Defra, New Anglia LEP, local councillor and the many others for their support for our exciting new Lowestoft headquarters development,” said CEO Tom Karsten. “This will be a vital step in realising our vision of a new era of Cefas and Defra leadership in providing world class science to manage the marine and freshwater environment.
“Cefas has played a leading role in the UK and Lowestoft’s marine history over the past 116 years. The renewal of our Lowestoft headquarters represents an important chapter in this history and future opportunities for our continued development,” he added Cefas secured the final piece of funding in January 2018 and with the new centre on the way, the firm could save up to £2 million a year in running costs and would safeguard 440 jobs at the Pakefield Road site as well as enabling it to employ 12 to 15 apprentices a year. “We are pleased to be officially marking the start of construction on this important development, which will provide Cefas with outstanding facilities to support their globally-relevant research and anchor our region as a centre for marine science excellence in the UK,” said Saul Humphrey, managing director of Morgan Singall’s East region.

MPs call for ban on combustible cladding The Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee is calling for an extension of combustible cladding to be banned, and for action to be taken to tackle conflicts of interest in the construction industry, in a report into building regulations and fire safety. Urgent and wide-ranging action to ensure the safety of people living in high-rise buildings needs to be taken by the government, including extending a proposed ban on combustible cladding and tackling the conflicts of interest that are pervasive throughout the construction industry. The Committee recommends extensive
changes to building regulations, following the publication of the Final Report of the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety by Dame Judith Hackitt, which was set up after the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017. The report outlines several conflicts of interest that exist in the construction industry. The Committee is particularly concerned with how builders are able to appoint their own inspectors, who may have a commercial interest in not reporting bad practice to the local authority, and manufacturers choosing the most lenient testing bodies for their products. developer-update.co.uk

Wrightstyle brings Farringdon art to life Wrightstyle, the advanced steel and aluminium glazing system company, recently completed three elevations of structurallyglazed curtain walling measuring over 50 metres as part of recent work on the eastern ticket hall of Crossrail’s Farringdon station. As part of Crossrail’s Art Programme, British artist Simon Periton designed an artwork for the curtain walling featuring an intricate pattern that reflects the elaborate Victorian metalwork of the historic Smithfield Market directly opposite. During the day, the artwork will allow passengers to see inside to the coffered ceiling that echoes the Brutalist architecture of the nearby Barbican, whilst changing shadows will be cast across the interior space.
In the evening, the station lights will illuminate the design from inside, offering a dramatic new perspective to those on the nearby streets. Wrightstyle is currently working on seven out of the 40 stations on the Elizabeth line, including Bond Street, Paddington, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel and Woolwich. The new Farringdon station is expected to serve 82,000 passengers every working day. Specialist glass from Hero Glass was chosen for the project “which pushed the capabilities of normal glass design, but which also successfully fuses art and architecture in this remarkable building,” according to Lee Coates, UK director, Hero Glass. The glass panel artwork was created using a silk screen print process in Hero’s factory which gave the visual result the artist was looking for. Wrightstyle’s glazing systems offer great durability and protection, having live tested its systems against both car and lorry bomb attack, using up to 500kg of TNT-equivalent high explosive.
“Crossrail is the largest construction project in Europe and passenger safety is, of course, the paramount concern of the design team,” said Wrightstyle contracts manager, John Woodcock. “That’s the reason why our systems have been specified across several new stations on the Elizabeth Line. We have great experience in the transportation sector, and our systems have been subjected to international testing in Europe, the USA and Asia,” he said.

From Tiny Seeds Grow Mighty Oaks Midland company celebrates decade in business by becoming UK leader NEVER before have we been more aware of our natural environment – and one UK business is leading the charge in changing the way planners, developers and landowners approach the need for better green spaces. developer-update.co.uk
2018 sees Wharton celebrating its tenth year in business, having started out a part-time ‘lifestyle’ business for a local authority tree officer from the Midlands. Fast-forward a decade and Wharton Natural Infrastructure Consultants, based in Warwickshire, is celebrating its milestone anniversary as one of the largest tree consultancies in the UK. The company, founded and headed by Peter Wharton, is a one-stop shop for land, tree and ecology advice, managing projects and developments for everyone from councils and planning departments to private estates, property owners, land managers, architects, schools and leisure destinations. The focus is on viewing trees and green spaces not as obstacles in the planning process – but as assets; enhancing development, protecting and creating invaluable natural spaces and realising the hugely positive impact that they have on everything from property prices to health and wellbeing.
Peter Wharton, founder of Wharton Natural Infrastructure Consultants
But it’s not about tree-hugging, as Mr Wharton explains: “We’re definitely not tree-huggers, and that’s important. We believe there’s a fine balance between appropriate tree retention and the need for development. It’s not about enabling old trees to be removed to make way for a new development and re-planting in a new area. But we are realists - and sometimes a tree does have to go. Wherever possible we will mitigate the impact of development, finding a solution that has minimal impact on the trees and ecology of the site. “Our mission is to be nature’s voice – and we want to change the way trees and ecology are viewed in planning terms; rather than it being a box to tick or a problem to overcome, we turn natural constraints into exciting opportunities: achieving planning success, improving quality of life, allowing nature to thrive.” One of Wharton’s biggest achievements to date is the regeneration of Coventry University. The trees and ecology were a major constraint, but it was considered that the removal of trees to allow development - with new green areas created elsewhere - provided the optimum solution that struck the right balance between nature and human needs. Without Wharton’s expertise - resulting in re-planting across the city - the new
Science and Health Building which was opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge earlier this year, wouldn’t have happened. There’s a growing realisation about the important role trees play in our urban as well as the rural environment. Trees absorb pollutants with measurable benefits to people’s health – but they also
deliver a whole host of other economic, environmental and social benefits. Studies show that where industrial areas and work places include trees, employees are more productive and have a greater sense of job satisfaction. And, trees increase economic as well as personal wellbeing, with property values boosted by their presence. “Trees are too often seen as additional, rather than fundamental, to good development and we’re working hard to change that, helping create green infrastructure that we can fit buildings into, rather than the other way around,” Mr Wharton added. Having started as a small, one-man parttime business, Wharton now employs a team of 8 and is looking to ‘branch out’ further in the year ahead, taking on more staff and opening a second office in the Birmingham area.

Building Case Study
Caudwell Centre of Excellence,
Caudwell International Children’s Centre (CICC) is the UK’s first independent purpose-built facility dedicated to autism diagnosis, therapy and research. The 60,000 sq ft, £20 million facility located at Keele University Science and Innovation Park has incorporated curved steel roofs around two internal courtyards. Project: Keele University Architect: Robert Hempsall, James Pass at C4Consulting LLP Contractor: Gary Cartwright, Buckingham Group Ltd Ceiling Contractor: Paul Norris, Miles Industries Ltd Products: Focus™ Ds, Advantage™ A 600x600mm, Meditec™ 600x600mm
he centre has been meticulously designed to provide an ideal environment for disabled people, with a particular focus on the needs of children with autism and neurodevelopmental conditions. Ecophon’s Omar Hussain described how the design of the building called for specialist acoustic solutions. “All of the rooms and large spaces have curved walls which made the concealed Focus Ds installation very non-standard. The integration with M&E proved to be a specific challenge which we had to address directly on site.” Paul Norris of Miles Industries was the ceiling contractor for the duration of the project and initial
design meetings, to pricing of the works and both surveying and managing elements of the works. He described working on the CICC building: “A high proportion of the walls were curved, and this made installing standard products a challenge. We had to use several products which are usually used sparingly on standard construction projects including 6mm Glasroc plasterboard and flexi perimeter trim.” “We installed Focus Ds predominantly on the ground floor in the ’front of house’ areas where children, staff and parents would be. Advantage was mainly used in the staff office areas on the upper floors. Both of these products were installed in the Lab area, along with Meditec and some Focus E.”
Keele University Paul and the Miles Industries team know Ecophon’s products well and as they were involved at the design stage, they were able to advise on the best product to use in many areas. “We have worked with Ecophon before and have experience with a number of their products but it was our first time using the Focus Ds system. The architect and client required a class A absorption tile so had already specified Ecophon. However, we were involved in adapting a few specifications for commercial reasons. We also helped the customer specify suitable ceilings for various spaces to meet very demanding requirements. The concealed system was a high priority.” The Miles Industries team found it useful that the Ecophon team were available for site visits when needed, and to answer installation queries.

Design trends to make your garden pop this summer Whether you are looking to do a complete garden re-design or simply want to update the look of your garden, Oeco Garden Rooms has compiled some of the must have trends to look out for this summer. Although the use of natural colours and finishes has been a staple of garden design for many years, many people are now choosing bright and vibrant colours to make their gardens stand out from the crowd. Muted tones such as browns, greens and greys are perfect for garden fences and sheds, but try switching it up a little with your garden furniture. There is now a whole range of colours to choose from when searching for garden furniture, and you can even update tired looking fixtures and furniture with some bold paint or varnish to create pops of colour and focal points in the space.
Alfresco Dining The summer months are the perfect time to enjoy the garden, with alfresco dining set to become one of the biggest trends this year. Creating an outside space in which to cook and entertain friends and family will become must-
have garden features this year, with dedicated areas for eating and relaxing, and for cooking. BBQ’s and pizza ovens are good choices for cooking, while pergolas, gazebos and verandas are popular eating and relaxing areas. The key to creating the perfect alfresco dining experience is providing comfy furniture, heating options if required and mood lighting to create the right ambience.
Multiple use garden sheds A big trend over the past few years was to change the standard garden shed from a storage area to a multifunctional space, and with technology advancing all the time this popularity is expected to grow. Many people are now choosing to create multi-use spaces which have designated storage areas for garden equipment but also areas for other uses such as greenhouses, outdoor
entertainment areas, summer houses and even games rooms or gyms. Whether you are planning to adapt your existing shed or build a new one there are plenty of options available, from flat pack self-assembly units to professional installed structures that can be custom made to your specifications and needs.
Growing your own vegetables With people now looking at eating healthier and wanting to know where their food comes from there has been a big resurgence in growing your own vegetables over the past few years. There is a variety of herbs and vegetables that can be easily grown

Starting to grow your own vegetables is easy, start off with some window boxes of herbs and expand from there. Set aside a patch of garden to do some experimenting or build a greenhouse and start growing.
Solar hubs also allow you to charge mobile phones, tablets and torches allowing you to spend more time in the garden. Solar lights and hubs are safe and inexpensive, and are perfect for creating the right atmosphere to relax and unwind in.
Solar lighting continues to be popular Solar lights have come a long way over the last couple of years and are now one of the most cost effective
Welcoming nature into your garden Many gardeners are aware of the declining numbers of bees and
butterflies, but it is also important to welcome other animals into your garden. Taking time to research and adjust the types of plants and flowers you use in your garden will better support local wildlife, giving them some much needed food and shelter. Some of the things to consider are to restrict or stop the use of harmful insecticides, grown native berries and seed-producing plants and set aside a small area of your garden to let grow; this will provide natural shelter and foraging areas for wildlife.

HEADS UP ON SOLUTIO Improving bathroom facilities is one of the top- and easiestmethods of opening business doors to a £420million spend. A new report into disability by the Papworth Trust claims that revenue figure is what disabled people spend each week. The report also lists the top 10 barriers to access outside the home: the list includes bathroom facilities- layout, location and size. Closomat is uniquely positioned to help address the problem. “Can you afford to exclude up to 20% of the population? That is how many people are registered disabled,” explains Robin Tuffley, Closomat marketing manger. “However, Regulations, particularly with regard to accessible toilet provision- were not developed and written by people with limitations. In reality, the majority need more space- for the wheelchair, and/or a carer, additional equipment- such as a hoist or changing bench, particularly as mobility is now perhaps the biggest challenge facing disabled people. “Venues that have delivered bigger and better facilities report an increase in custom- and thus spend, to the extent of families and groups specifically visiting because there are appropriate toilets.” Closomat is Britain’s leading installer of assisted accessible away from home toilets, including hygiene rooms, Changing Places and Space to Change facilities. Closomat is also unique in, in-house, being able to offer a complete CDM compliant package, encompassing design advice, supply, install, commissioning and service/maintenance. Its website www.clos-o-mat.com is the ‘go to’ resource for such toilets, explaining the different facilities, and their relevance in an inclusive, accessible society, with a raft of support data including CAD blocks, typical layouts, white papers, and specification clauses. DR SCHUTZ PU SEALER – MAKING LONGER LASTING FLOORING
Dr. Schutz, the German floor care company, offers PU Sealer, an innovative solution that quickly and easily transforms tired, damaged or old floors, at a fraction of the time and cost of an entire floor replacement. As well as renovating any floor with a fresh and lasting finish, PU Sealer offers added protection for flooring areas prone to high traffic, including sports halls, offices, hospitals, shopping centres and schools. Such areas with a heavily foot volume tend to wear very quickly when they don’t have a hard wearing product applied. Not only can this cost money, but it can be a time consuming issue to fix. By applying the PU-Sealer, flooring can be kept in a great condition for many years. Due to the short drying time, there is a fast return to operational use. Unlike other floor refurbishment services, the process does not produce any noise or dirt. A standard renovation can be completed in a weekend, providing no disruption to the day to day running of the practice. Lothar Schutz, Managing Director of Dr. Schutz comments, “PU Sealer can be applied quickly over a weekend, avoiding the need to close the doors for many commercial buildings. Refurbishing a floor using PU Sealer provides cost savings of up to 50 % in comparison to laying a brand new floor and will prolong the longevity of the floor for many years to come.” The water based, eco-friendly PU-Sealer can be applied to most types of flooring, including vinyl, tiled and epoxy resin. Adding 40 microns of protective thickness to floors, PU Sealer extends the lifespan by up to six times and provides a lasting clear matt finish. Thanks to the permanent sealing, it protects against friction and discolouration from chemical spillages. Thanks to the products special water-based substance, the PU Sealer also reduces dirt adhesion and the time needed for day-to-day maintenance. The Dr. Schutz PU Sealer range also includes PU Antislip and PU Anticolor. Creative technology company BeArty launches Digital Wall Art platform BeArty Digital is state-of-the-art technology for Digital Wall Art. Consumers can navigate through thousands of artworks easily on the mobile app which is connected to a customized BeArty Digital Art Frame which displays the selected artworks in high quality. Even the paint brush strokes can be seen!
The innovative technology of BeArty Digital makes art affordable for all, allowing consumers to change their wall décor at any moment BeArty strives to make art affordable for all. People rarely change their wall décor, so they look at the same pieces for years on end, regardless of how much was originally spent. Now, BeArty Digital is changing that. BeArty has developed proprietary technology which allows consumers to change the artwork on their walls at any moment. Gone are the days of looking at the same wall art, month after month, year after year. developer-update.co.uk
In line with BeArty’s objective of making art accessible to all, a low initial price is charged for the Digital Art Frame followed by a low monthly subscription fee. This is the same pricing model as people are used to paying with their mobile phone contracts. So it is possible for everyone to be able to display new artworks on their walls at any time in their homes and offices. “With the large and growing wall decoration market, it is finally time to make a real impact and make art available to everyone by empowering them to change their wall décor in just a couple of clicks,” shares Patrick Ashworth, Founder and CEO of BeArty. “BeArty already offers a range of art-printed products such as wall art, fashion and tech on its e-commerce site. Now with BeArty Digital, we are making further inroads in the market with this innovative art technology. And at a price that will suit everyone’s pockets”.
Art education is also important to BeArty. BeArty Digital allows consumers to browse, view curated playlists and create their own playlists from thousands of artwork types and styles. Now it is possible for families to sit at their dinner table and discuss different artworks, guess who the artist is, what the meaning of different artworks might be, how art is interpreted by different people, the history of the piece, and so much more. How better to expose your children to art as they grow up? BeArty Digital provides users with proprietary technology that connects a customized Digital Art Frame to a mobile app. BeArty has focused on simplicity when developing the platform. The Digital Art Frame is as simple as “plug & play”. The frame software is pre-installed on the Digital Art Frame, so customers just need to plug the screen into a power socket and connect to their WiFi network. And customers can choose from a range of colours for their frame. The mobile app can be easily downloaded from the App Store or Google Play and once connected to the same WiFi network as the Digital Art Frame, both are able to communicate together. The mobile app easily allows users to browse, search, play and create playlists.
And via Settings, users can switch between “landscape” and “portrait”, as well as modify the frequency in which artworks are changed within a selected playlist. BeArty Digital is leading the way in art technology and boosting the wall decoration market to the 21st century. It is time every home and office can control the artworks on their walls. The RRP of the BeArty Digital Art Frame is £649. However, BeArty Digital is striving to “make art affordable to all”, so is offering highly competitive
packages starting from just £199 for the frame and £12 for the monthly subscription fee for the digital app. To launch this revolutionary technology, pre-orders of BeArty Digital are being made available to early adopters with some amazing offers at even more discounted prices, through an Indiegogo campaign which will go live soon. So if you are interested to be an early adopter of this state-of-the-art platform, then you can preregister now and be the first to purchase one of the offers as soon as the campaign is live.

HAVWOODS Situated in a quiet East Sussex village on the edge of the South Downs National Park, The Studio is a contemporary residential build that beautifully embraces the juxtaposition of light and dark. Designed for its resident artist owner by British architect Guylee Simmonds, the self-contained dwelling offers a multifunctional space for both creativity and living. Shrouded in charred Larch wood cladding, the dark architectural exterior is contrasted with the structure’s bright and inviting internal scheme, featuring crisp white surfaces, industrial fixtures and Havwoods flooring. The new studio required a durable and attractive floorcovering that would be suitable for use with underfloor heating. Havwoods’ Nature Oak Herringbone was the perfect solution; hardwearing with a pre-finished lacquer, the stability of its engineered construction ensures a sturdy underfoot surface, whilst the classic herringbone pattern, golden oak tone and coordinating skirting detail all work with the space to create a sense of light and simplicity.

Sevendials stuns in the Cheshire countryside
Project address: Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire Architect: TheCAVE architecture + design studio Installer: Altitude Aluminium Reynaers systems: Reynaers Hi-Finity sliding door, CS 77 Tilt and Turn Situated in the rural countryside village of Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire, Sevendials is a private contemporary residence project. It utilises an array of innovative products from leading aluminium suppliers Reynaers and Cheshire-based Altitude Aluminium, which installed the stunning aluminium windows and doors on this beautiful build. The contemporary living space is set across more than 600m2 including a full leisure suite with guest accommodation. Situated at the head of a gently sloping valley and immersed in mature greenery including Oak and Birch trees, the modern house boasts views across Cheshire towards Snowdonia and North Wales. TheCAVE architecture + design studio was selected to design the project due to its vast luxury private residual property portfolio. TheCAVE was invited to stay in the bungalow that was previously on the site for three months before the project commenced to gain a profound knowledge of the path of sunlight, views and landscape before plans were finalised. The Sevendials dwelling beautifully projects the impact of Reynaers’ Hi-Finity sliding door system. Each panel of glazing spans the full height of the building across two floors, creating an impactful facade. Despite their minimal visual sightlines, the Hi-Finity sliding doors durability and strength allows for up to 750kg of weight per sliding door leaf. Fixed panes can weigh up to 1200kg.
To further advance the functionality of the property, Reynaers’ CS 77 Tilt and Turn systems were installed alongside the Hi-Finity range. Depending on the position of the handle, the CS 77 Tilt and Turn windows open either from the bottom hinge allowing an opening for ventilation or from the side hinge, opening in full. Whilst the façade at the front of the building uses minimal glass to enhance privacy and security, the rear of the building is where Reynaers’ products come to life. The ‘L’ shape plan embraces the views to the West, allowing the large panes of glass to engulf the sunset as it descends. The orientation of the project also ensures natural light bathes all interior scopes throughout the full 12 months of the year. Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager at Reynaers, comments: “Sevendials is a stunning example of our beautiful windows and doors, we are extremely proud to add this to our portfolio of world class residential properties.” Wayne Little, Operations Director at Altitude Aluminium, said: “We know how important it is to have excellent products designed to stand up to the worst of the British weather. We often install Reynaers’ products because they not only look fantastic, but tick all the boxes for the latest trends of huge areas of glass, without compromising on comfort, security and warmth.” Further details are available from: Reynaers Limited, Tel: 0121 421 1999, or email: firstname.lastname@example.org, website: www.reynaers.co.uk. developer-update.co.uk

Traceability: Top edge of a Vicaima Fire Door
Don’t play with fire We all await the inevitable changes to legislation and good practice, following Dame Judith Hackitt’s independent review of risk critical building products such as fire doors and fire door assemblies and how this will shape future product specification. Understandably anticipation has resulted in concern amongst specifiers and stake holders as they try to evaluate their current practices and identify potential weaknesses. After all the specification of fire doors is a very serious matter and as we all know can have far reaching consequences if wrong decisions are made. It is little wonder therefore, that for specifiers using Vicaima products, any feeling of anxiety and apprehension regarding past, current and future use of fire doors is not an issue; providing of course that they have been correctly installed. In addition to doors, Vicaima also manufacture a range of door kit solutions via our Easi-Fit and Portaro brands. These products include a full scope of performance characteristics for current and future industry specifications, namely: • Fire Tested to BS 476 Part 22 and BS EN 1634-1:2014 • Secure by Design approved products • Acoustic performance, both inherent and additional as required • FD30 to FD90 rated, with fire and smoke solutions
• Durability with DD171 and EN 1192 severe duty rating • Mobility provision via glazing and dimensional flexibility • Environmentally sound (all products are FSC Certified) • Long life with a 10 Year Guarantee
Saving lives and property
As specialist fire door manufacturers Vicaima go beyond simple compliance to provide ultimate peace of mind. Vicaima uses fully solid cores and a traditional stile and rail perimeter to enable reliable fixing of ironmongery. After all sometimes it is what you cannot see that makes the difference. One of the recommendations outlined within the Independent Review, is the need for third party accreditation. Here Vicaima adhere to not one but two nationally recognised bodies to verify the performance of products, namely BWF-Certifire and BM TRADA Q-Mark. In each case traceability is assured with the use of tamper evident labels and plastic plugs to provide clear understanding of fire rating and of course origin of manufacture. You or indeed future custodians of fitted fire doors will be left in no doubt simply by looking at the top edge of any Vicaima fire door, where clear identification including a detailed inkjet stamp enables Vicaima to establish complete control of our products throughout their lifecycle.

38 Doors, Windows & Architectural Hardware INTRATONE ACCESS CONTROL TECHNOLOGY INSTALLED AT OVER 900 SITES FOR HOUNSLOW COUNCIL Door entry and access control equipment from Intratone, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers, has been installed at over 900 different sites across Hounslow Council’s estate. The access control systems across the Council’s residential and commercial portfolio had become obsolete with the desire to move from keys to a fob-based system. Residents had been complaining at the delays in receiving new keys – in some cases taking up to six weeks for them to be delivered. New fobs can now be obtained straight away by residents when visiting their local housing office through the new cloud-based technology. Since late 2016 the Intratone fob readers have been installed at low and high-rise apartment blocks and Council offices, commercial buildings and operational sites, and complaints have dropped significantly. Ian Williams, Electrical Engineer for Hounslow Council is in no doubt as to the benefits of the new Intratone proximity readers: “We hadn’t heard of Intratone before it was recommended by the installer. So far, we have been very impressed – although it is a sizeable investment for the Council initially, the build and technology of the readers means that they will last for at least ten years. “At one point the fob programming was carried out by two full-time members of staff who would visit site daily to program residents’ fobs. This can all now be programmed remotely by the relevant housing officers at the local housing office which will be a large long-term saving to the council.” The cloud-based fob-reader system has significantly enhanced control over who has access, for how long and to which properties. Because it is cloud-based, developer-update.co.uk
changes made to key fobs are almost immediate and can be facilitated from anywhere where there is internet access – whether that’s at a PC, laptop or a smartphone on site. “The simplicity of the database is such that some of our concierge and caretakers are being trained to manage the system themselves which frees up even more of the engineer’s time,” Ian adds. “With the older technology residents were also able to copy fobs in some local shops which did not give the council full control over who could access certain blocks. “The new Intratone fobs have similar technology to an Oyster card – you cannot rewrite or copy them so when someone tries to use a copied fob it sends the system a notification. We can check the system when a certain fob has been used so we can assist Police when they have been trying to track someone’s whereabouts.” Daniel Bacon, Area Sales Manager at Intratone says its products are flexible enough to suit a wide range of sites and applications: “Our access control and door entry systems are installed across Social Housing, Private Properties and HAs all over the UK and Europe, and prove popular for residents of all ages, but especially the elderly, because they are very easy to use. Installers and customers also like them because they are very easy to install and competitively priced.”
Intratone is one of Europe’s largest access controls specialists and manufactures a range of cost-effective door-entry and access control solutions designed around the customer need. Its systems are installed across a range of Housing Association, Social Housing and Private Properties throughout the UK and Europe. www.intratone.com
Janisol Arte 2.0, the second-generation renovation window from steel systems specialist Schueco Jansen, is proving popular with architects because of its enhanced specification, improved performance characteristics and ability to satisfy the aesthetic concerns of local authority planners and conservation officers.
Doors, Windows & Architectural Hardware 39
Janisol Arte renovation windows are perfect for bringing light into the remodelled interior of the recently refurbished London restaurant The German Gymnasium.
Schueco Jansen Renovation Window is the Preferred Solution Now being seen as the preferred solution for many refurbishment projects, especially those involving a listed building, elegantly ‘retro’ Janisol Arte 2.0 offers an enlarged range of profiles with slim sight-lines from 25 mm. A wider choice of glazing bead shapes – right-angled, bevelled, scotia and flat – makes it even easier to find an exact match for the steel windows being replaced. Furthermore, since laser-welded profiles can now be added to standard Arte profiles, mullion spans can be significantly increased, so enabling the Janisol Arte 2.0 window to accommodate much larger areas of fenestration.
Special new foam profiles located between the glass and the frame mean that the insulation in the Janisol Arte 2.0 window has been significantly enhanced and following the introduction of insert profiles – which also speed up fabrication times – results in drainage that is even more reliable.
Finally, as well as standard, premiumquality steel profiles, clients can opt for Janisol Arte 2.0 profiles in high-grade austenitic 1.4401 stainless steel or Corten steel, completing a specification that is thought to be unmatched by any other renovation window on the market.
In addition, because all Janisol Arte 2.0 profiles now go through the latest ZF 100 galvannealed hot-dip process, corrosion resistance has been improved and processing weldability enhanced.
For more information on Schueco Jansen’s Janisol Arte 2.0 renovation window, please email email@example.com
Available in all the opening types commonly encountered in both pre- and post-war industrial buildings, maximum vent weights have increased to 150 kg thanks to the introduction of state-ofthe-art, 3D adjustable stainless steel hinges. Another benefit is that simpler fabrication techniques reduce manufacturing time by up to 85%, meaning that six and a half Janisol Arte 2.0 vents can be produced in the time it took to make a single vent in the previous system.
An excellent example of the slender steel glazing achieved with Janisol Arte on the Flora building in Germany.
SNOWSOUND Acoustic Comfort and Control Acoustic suppression is no longer a Technological nightmare but something that can be applied simply and retrospectively to existing and new builds with Lesco acoustic panels. It is acknowledged that 70% of workers consider they could be more productive in a less noisy environment. To be in a meeting room with undue resonance or echo is maddening, to make an audiovisual presentation by Skype impossible. There are many reasons why acoustic comfort is needed. But to have one product that can be used across a wide band of applications is a breakthrough.

Control your roof windows with your voice for a healthier living environment New smart home solution VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO compatible with Apple® HomeKit™ lets you control roof windows with your voice or at the touch of a button
From today, homeowners can for the first time ever tell their roof windows to open or close for a better and healthier living environment. Global roof window leader VELUX and smart home company Netatmo launch VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO, the first ‘plug-and-play’ smart home solution for remote sensor-based operation of roof windows, blinds and shutters. VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO is the first smart roof window system that connects with Apple HomeKit, allowing homeowners to manage indoor climate control at home or remotely across all Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV and HomePod. The system
can be controlled using Siri®, Apple’s voice-controlled intelligent assistant, or with the touch of a button on the Apple Home app. According to research we spend a staggering 90 per cent of our time indoors and often forget to ventilate our homes. But now if it’s too hot or too cold in your home, if the air starts to smell or it’s damp, the new smart home system from VELUX automatically airs out the room for you. “We are extremely excited to see how consumers will respond to our smart home innovation that makes it easy to have a comfortable and healthy home,” says Kent Holm, SVP, global product management, the VELUX Group. Sensor-based automatic operation Built on the newest smart-sensor technology, the VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO system, developed in partnership with the leading smart home company Netatmo, thinks and acts on your behalf. Smart indoor
sensors monitor the temperature, humidity and CO2 concentration inside the home and activate a gateway to open or close the roof windows to improve the climate indoors. “Few are aware of the impact of indoor air on their health and wellbeing, but the air we breathe is just as important as the food we eat or the water we drink. An average adult breathes in around 15,000 litres of air every single day and spends up to 90 per cent of their time indoors. A healthy indoor climate goes way beyond simple convenience, which our new smart home solution ensures,” continued Holm. The smart home device is preprogrammed so that roof windows automatically open to let fresh air into your home when needed. The device also prevents homes from overheating by proactively closing shutters and awning blinds. Effortless control giving you peace of mind in your pocket
VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO works along with a control app for iOS and Android. Therefore, you can manage and monitor your windows with a few touches on your smartphone using the Apple Home app across all Apple devices and VELUX ACTIVE’s own app.
market is predicted to grow to around $53.45 billion by 2022 (Statista 2018). Smart home technologies enable you to control household appliances like refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, clothes driers, coffee makers and kettles through apps and automatic regulation.
“VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO is the result of two stunning technologies: high standard VELUX windows and Netatmo’s know-how for creating simple and useful products and applications. By automating the opening, closing and shading of roof windows, we can make a big difference and improve indoor climate so users don’t have to worry about it. We created a smart sensorbased solution that is not only easy to use and reliable, but also beneficial for user’s wellbeing,” added Fred Potter, founder and CEO of Netatmo.
“Smart homes continue to be an important consumer trend and are expected to be mainstream within the next four years. By digitalising
the operation of roof windows to automatically improve your indoor climate, we’re adding a health and wellbeing dimension to the intelligent home and pushing innovation in this area to the next level,” continued Holm. Through the integration with Apple HomeKit, VELUX roof windows, blinds and shutters become part of the growing smart home product family that’s improving health, comfort and convenience in homes.

The SLPB and SLVT controllers have a control button with status indicators and a 4-stage run-back timer where a heating period remains active until the run-back timer expires. There is a choice of three time periods available in the run-back timer mode: 5, 15 or 30 minutes. When the button is pressed four times, this takes the run-back time period to 20, 60 or 120 minutes.
Simple yet effective heating solutions with Consort Claudgen Consort Claudgen’s SL wireless control heating system is an ideal heating system for domestic and commercial premises such as homes, student accommodation, hotels, modular buildings and offices. It provides building owners or operators a variety of heating control options through four different wireless controllers, which are designed with functionalities aimed at restricting excessive energy consumption and improving heating efficiency. The SLPB, SLVT, SLVTB and SLTI wireless controllers have easy-to-use control buttons, can set comfort and setback temperature settings and can be connected to one or multiple SL heaters in a room or area, including low surface temperature heaters.
Additionally, the SLVT offers temperature control and a digital display to show the room temperature. Unlike the SLPB, room occupiers can now adjust the room temperature to their comfort. However, they cannot increase it beyond the maximum comfort temperature set by the building owners or operators. This feature can be essential for the latter wanting greater control over their heating system and costs whilst providing occupiers the flexibility to adjust the room temperature to their comfort. The SLVTB controller is identical to the SLVT, except it is battery-powered and the status indicators are shown on the display screen. The SLTI, on the other hand, features an electronic timer offering up to three heating periods per day, seven days a week. It is designed with four large control buttons with audible and tactile feedback and an electronic lock to prevent tampering with the controls. There are four operating modes including a 15-minute Boost with temperature control to provide the maximum comfort quickly. The SLPB, SLVT and SLTI controllers will fit onto any standard one gang box and are mains 240V or 12VDC powered. The SLVTB is supplied with a single gang box and two ‘AAA’ 1.5V batteries. With four wireless controllers to choose from, the SL heating system provides building owners or operators a better control over their heating and costs. Its performance is ranked with a class A ++ in heating mode and A ++ in cooling mode. The floor console operates in heating mode down to -15°C, and in cooling mode up to + 43°C. Moreover, the use of R32 allows it to have significantly lower environmental impact due to R32’s GWP (Global Warming Potential) being approximately three times lower than R410A refrigerant. Internet control Homeowners, end users or small business owners can now use the new Panasonic controller (optional extra) or download the “Panasonic AC Controller” app, to remotely control up to 10 different sites, with 20 indoor units per site. This control is accessible from a smartphone or tablet, anywhere and anytime. This setting allows the user to optimise thermal comfort, control energy consumption and operate the specific functionalities of each unit.
blend seamlessly with any home interior design scheme. Exceptional indoor comfort The new floor console features both upwards and downwards airflow from the unit to allow a consistent supply of air to the room. In heating mode, it diffuses the airflow down and in cooling mode, it diffuses fresh air upwards. The sound level of the console has been designed to ensure a calm environment with a super quiet operation of 20 dB(A) in low speed (whispering sound level).
Air purification is also enhanced thanks to Panasonic’s new nanoe™ X system for fresher, healthier air. Based on ionisation technology, it can work simultaneously in heating or cooling operation to remove pollen, pollution, fungi and even cigarette smoke from the air. It also reduces odours in the room and includes an internal dehumidifier to limit the propagation of mold and bacteria.
Available on both iOS and Android, the app is easy to use, just register, log in and follow the simple instructions to get started. The WIFI service is available from May 2018. For more information, please visit www.aircon.panasonic.eu.

Lighting Efficiency is Key at Ability International A recent lighting upgrade using LEDVANCE Damp Proof LED fitting increases illuminance in the manufacturing facility by 20% and delivers 68% energy cost savings. Peterborough-based Ability International has selected LEDVANCE Damp Proof LED luminaires to retrofit its entire warehouse, in a project to improve the working environment and reduce energy and maintenance costs. The UK company specialises in providing working-at-height solutions, custombuilt to client’s specifications and requirements. With more than 23 years’ experience of manufacturing aluminium scaffold towers and access equipment, Ability International offer many of its solutions custombuilt to client’s specifications and requirements. developer-update.co.uk
59 The company had been based at the site for just over a year when it became apparent that the lighting in the manufacturing facility needed to be updated. The existing lighting installation included 51 six-foot fluorescent linear luminaires with two tubes per fitting. It was using 8.7 kW per hour and costing the business £273 a month. Staff had also voiced their concerns about the lack of light over the work benches and machines. Retrofitting the entire warehouse area with LED fittings enabled the company to improve the working environment whilst reducing energy and maintenance costs. Project contractor Lighting Electricians Limited chose LEDVANCE Damp Proof LED luminaires 55W to complete the installation. These luminaires provide uniform light with a wide beam angle of 105° and a high luminous efficacy of up to 115lm/W. IP65 protection makes it ideal for industrial and storage facilities. The LEDVANCE 55W Damp Proof LED luminaire range is designed to offer easy installation, with stainless steel clamps and safety screws provided alongside mounting accessories (suspension kit, theft protection kit). Reliable luminaire quality with a lifetime of up to 50000 hours, is backed by a five-year guarantee. Ease of installation and assembly was particularly useful to the team at Lighting Electricians. As part of their commitment to reduce the impact on their client’s operations during a project, the company pre-assembles
and completes as much of the installation as possible in their workshop facility off-site. The LEDVANCE products ensured that their time on-site was as efficient as possible. After completing the installation, the contractor recorded that illuminance has improved by 20%. The new luminaires reduced energy demand of the installation by 5kw per hour, saving the client 68% on their energy costs. Ease of installation was a decisive factor according to contractors Lighting Electricians: “The LEDVANCE luminaires offered an excellent luminous efficacy, at a very reasonable price and with a good guarantee. They look and feel like quality fittings. For us, the deciding factor will always be ease of install. The LEDVANCE fitting connected simply using push-fit connectors with all additional parts included. It was an easy choice after that.” Delighted client Ability International said: “The end result was a great surprise to us all. The brightness and clarity of light is stunning, with a high visual comfort. It is a lovely clear white light with a great spread, leaving no dark areas a very important feature in an engineering environment. As for the power consumption, the measured energy reduction looks very promising. The figures from the monitor indicate that we should reduce our lighting bill significantly!”
LEDVANCE Damp Proof LEDs have been installed at Ability International warehouse, improving the working environment and reducing energy and maintenance costs

Hydraulic platform lift aids access to Singleton Hall Singleton Hall, situated just a couple of miles from Blackpool, dates back to 1873, when it was built for Thomas Horrocks Miller and his wife. Now, transformed into beautiful apartments, the hall still retains many of the historical original features of the Miller home. The Singleton Trust wanted to ensure that residents and visitors, that were in wheelchairs or had problems with the stairs, could fully access the building without any issues. Ability Lifts were contacted for their expert advice on access, and recommended the Optimum 350 platform lift as the ideal solution after reviewing the architects drawings and specifications. Following a review by the Trust, where they requested some finishing touches, the lift was installed by Ability Lifts, working with the main contractor for building works. The lift, which comes with it’s own self supporting structure, was specified for outdoor use, and finished in a special RAL colour to match in with the environment. The platform itself has a 900mm x 1450mm platform with an open through arrangement, making it fully compliant for disabled access, and has an upper gate with a glass infill panel.
