08 Industry News From big screen to big sleep Shepherds Bush Pavilion, a Grade II listed building, dating from 1923, was orginially constructed as a cinema. Now, it has been painstakingly restored by Flanagan Lawrence and has reopened as the Shepherds Bush Pavilion hotel.
Designed by Frank Verity, it won the RIBA London Street Architecture Award for the best London façade. Heavily damaged during World War II, the building was poorly repaired, subsequently converted to a Bingo Hall in 1983 and closed its doors for good in 2001, remaining disused for much of the next decade. In 2009 planning permission was granted for conversion into a four-star, 320-room hotel with conference facilities, café, restaurant, bar, retail spaces and a rooftop spa. Drawing on the influence of Art Deco cinema design, the foyer and atrium spaces employ simple curved surfaces in alternating bands of black and gold. The internally illuminated spandrel panels also minimise sound reverberation. At ground floor level, darkstained, ribbed timber panelling and heavy curtains serve a similar purpose. The honey-coloured limestone floor is inlaid with brass, in two simple decorative elements. In the main reception, brass strips form a series of concentric circles at the centre of the space, which are reflected in a ceiling coffer above, while in the atrium, the bands define the circulation route from the reception through to the atrium bar. The primary façades have been retained with modifications to bring natural light into the rooms behind. The building features a new glazed roof which follows the curved profile of the original, bringing daylight into the upper floors of the building. Additional insulation to the brick facades, high performance glazing, solar shading, improved air permeability and new energy- efficient plant all contribute to a significantly improved thermal performance. Mandatory insulation in UK homes The Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ new report ‘Heat Energy: the Nation’s Forgotten Crisis’ is calling for the UK Government to urgently introduce legislation for a national insulation programme to cover every UK home. This legislation would declare all UK building stock as ‘national infrastructure’ and provide incentives, such as a reduction in stamp duty, for homeowners to install insulation to national standards. For those who cannot afford to pay, a national scheme to cover the cost of work would be funded by general taxation. The report also calls for installers of energy demand reduction measures to be trained to meet a mandatory competence registration, similar to the CORGI certification/ Gas Safe Register for gas installers. Dr Tim Fox, lead author of the report and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said: “The UK’s housing stock is some of the most poorly insulated in the developed world, largely because of the age of much of the countries domestic dwellings and the failure of successive Governments to take the meaningful action required on energy efficiency measures. “Poorly insulated homes cost the NHS an estimated £1.36bn every year, with one estimate placing 6.5 million UK homes in fuel poverty. New ONS data points to ‘significant growth’, says CPA Although construction output fell prior to the general election, a rise in new orders is pointing to significant growth, the Construction Products Association (CPA) has said. The latest construction output from the ONS indicates that overall activity in the industry fell 0.8% in April compared to March. New construction work rose 1.6% and, however basic repairs and maintenance work decreased by 4.8%. Dr Noble Francis, economics director, Construction Products Association, said: “Total construction output fell slightly in April but this was expected due to the uncertainty prior to the General Election and its adverse impacts on consumer and business confidence. “Overall, construction output was still 1.5% higher than one year earlier and, looking forward, the ONS new orders for construction point to further growth in activity over the next 12-18 months. “New orders in Q1 were 8.0% higher than one year earlier with orders growth in the three key construction sectors; private housing, infrastructure and commercial. Private housing new orders in Q1 were 1.5% higher than a year earlier, which points to further growth in housebuilding but at a potentially slower rate due to skills and capacity constraints. Infrastructure new orders in Q1 rose by 68.9% as work continues to feed through on major projects in the £466bn National Infrastructure Plan. New orders in the commercial sector in Q1 rose 14.9% due to a boost from offices and retail projects in Central London, Birmingham and Manchester.”

Rubb Helps to Bring Former Iconic Shipyard Buildings back to life
The Swan Hunter Shipyard buildings that were located in the dockyards on the banks of the River Tyne are well known as an iconic industrial image of the North East, after dominating the Newcastle skyline for more than 25 years.
Originally manufactured by Rubb Buildings Ltd back in 1982, the two BVL structures measuring 27m span x 24m long with 11.7m high sidewalls, were used to house the ships being manufactured by Swan Hunter. When shipbuilding ceased at the Wallsend yard, the structures were dismantled and placed in storage. In 2014 they are now erected and back in service at Wilton Engineering Services. The company specialises in engineering design, fabrication/construction, analysis, and coatings for the energy industry by the River Tees in Middlesbrough. The buildings were originally designed with a roller and track system to allow the building to slide along the dock. Wilton did not require the buildings to be moved and therefore did not install them with the roller system. The two buildings were designed to butt against each other to form one large enclosure, and also had a removable gable end which could be retro fitted to fully enclose the area. Wilton installed the two buildings together to effectively form one building, the front gable clad with new PVC sheets manufactured by Rubb. Wilton left one gable end open to allow parts and equipment to be easily transported in and out of the building for shot blast and painting.
Wilton approached Rubb to come up with a solution to fully enclose the building and provide a door system that would give a clear opening of approximately 21m wide by 10m
high. Rubb provided a Heli-Door system (21.35m wide x 9.7m high clear opening) with rakers to enable the wind load to be transferred straight to the foundations. This avoided the need to alter the existing building system to accommodate the point load from the door prop. As part of the scheme, Rubb was required to provide a gable infill, which was a shortened version of the previously designed full gable system. The hot dip galvanised-steel framework of the Rubb structures has proved to be long-lasting and durable – at 32 years old, the structures are still able to perform in al climates. The long life and re-use of these industrial fabric structures is an example of the longevity, value and flexibility of Rubb structures. RINNAI GOES SOLO IN UK FIRST Rinnai, the leading continuous flow gas fired water heater manufacturer, launches its latest innovation, the Infinity Solo Re-Circulator water heater with storage combined. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders also feature extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day) which means the customer pays less to maintain the heat within the tank,” says Goggin. Pete Seddon from the Rinnai UK Technical Department adds: “One other benefit of the Solo utilising a stainless steel cylinder, is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glass-lined equivalent as glass suffers from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time. Infinity Solo is renewables compatible so the customer can, at a later date, integrate a solar thermal or heat pump system with minimal alterations as the units will come pre-fitted with relevant tap ins to accommodate renewable technologies. City of Bristol College top marks for new heating system
City of Bristol College, one of the UK’s largest further and higher education colleges, recently selected Remeha to provide an improved and more efficient heating solution for its College Green Centre, which covers approximately 150,000 square feet and caters for more than 1,500 students. The new heating solution involved the installation of four Remeha P420 12 Section boilers located in the east and west plant rooms on the roof of the building, each powered by Baltur TBG 85pn fully modulating gas burners producing a total output capability of 2900kw. The burners were supplied by EOGB based in St Neots, Cambridgeshire. By replacing the old two-stage burners with fully-modulating EOGB/Baltur burners, the college now benefits from efficiency gains of more than 30%, leading to significant energy savings and CO2 and NOx reductions. At the same time, the units have superior reliability and lower maintenance costs. Martin Cooke, Technical Manager at EOGB, said: “The burner-boiler match in this heating system is very effective and enables the burners to operate at a 4:1 turndown ratio which significantly improves efficiency when compared to the old installation. The Baltur PN range of air to gas ratio burners are well established and provide optimum combustion and performance which will heat the City of Bristol College in a more efficient manner for many years to come.” Ean Robertson, Building Services Engineer at the City of Bristol College, said: “The new heating system will be extremely beneficial for the college in both lowering our heating costs and our carbon footprint. Queens’ College Cambridge Selected Cambridgeshire based, Strata Panels to design and manufacture furniture for over 100 student bed rooms. Buying direct from the manufacturer – Strata Panels Helen Heath, Queens’ College’s Head of Housekeeping, wanted a local furnituremanufacturer to come up with a solution of making bespoke contract furniture that would fit in with the historic feel and dark timbers of the 1911 built Queens’ College Dokett building, as well as a more modern looking style Queens’ College Cripps Court built during the 1970s. Strata Panels based a short distance along the A14 just north of Huntingdon responded to the challenge having made student furniture for over 15 years. “Strata’s Mark Garrood listened to the brief and produced sample pieces of furniture that met our exact criteria and at competitive prices.” - Helen Both designs were made using European Oak veneered MDF, the furniture for the Queens’ College Dokett building had oak crafted edges that were machined to give the detail a period look and were stained dark brown to match the exposed timbers and wall panelling which gives the building its character. Handles were sourced from India that complemented the furniture’s appearance and completed the antique look. The furniture for Queens’ College Cripps Court had 26mm thick oak veneered carcasses and was finished in a clear lacquer.
Queens’ College Furniture Project – Strata Panels Strata produced wardrobes, desks, desk pedestals, chests of drawers, bookcases, under bed storage drawers and bedside cabinets for 43 rooms in the Queens’ College Dokett building and 64 rooms in Queens’ College Cripps Court. Working closely with the college, installation time was compressed to fit in with building contractors and the start of the autumn term. By working weekends and late into the nights Strata Panel’s own team of installers completed the 107 rooms in just over a week. Smaller items such as bedside cabinets and storage drawers were delivered preassembled, whereas the larger items were assembled in situ. Babis Karakoulas, The Domestic Bursar for the Queens’ College, on seeing the furniture after it had been installed, complimented Strata on how well the appearance fitted in with the age and character of the Dokett building.

With the help of award-winning lighting manufacturer MHA Lighting, IC Resources have cut their lighting energy bills by 79% at their Grazeley offices, near Reading. In installing the ultra-low energy LED luminaires, the company which specialises in placing candidates in the semiconductor, embedded software and electronics sectors, are set to save £2,510 on their energy bills annually. This will equate to an energy saving of £42,670 over the product’s lifetime and will save 191 tonnes of Co2. Daniel Nash, IC Resources director, said: “As a company operating within the technical arena we’ve been keeping up-to-date with the developments being made in LED lighting and the associated benefits. “After speaking with Litenow lighting consultants it became even more apparent that switching to LED is an investment that can really pay off. “The IC Resources team is hugely dedicated and work at an extremely fastpace so it is paramount that the environment they work in is as comfortable and well-lit as possible. Reducing our energy usage and associated carbon footprint is something we were also extremely focussed on doing.
“Litenow recommended MHA Lighting’s products to us and we are delighted to say that the MHA solution has delivered on all these collective objectives. “Litenow’s installation team caused no intrzusion during installation either, which was completed outside of the offices’ opening hours, causing zero disruption to day-today operations.” Litenow specified MHA Lighting’s WaveStar 202 luminaires (27w including ballast) to replace the existing twin Compact Fluorescents – which were drawing 110w (not inclusive of ballast). Using patented waveguide technology the WaveStar 202 is able to deliver 98 lumens per circuit watt and 5000Kelvin to ensure working conditions are at the optimum for staff. Many studies have been done in work settings where activities such as reading and typing improve under lighting around the 5000K mark as people are able to see things much more easily. The colour temperature of the light and the high levels of uniformity are already enhancing the look and feel of the office for employees. Due to the lighting system’s design and high-reliability, the WaveStar is extremely low maintenance and will run for 109,000 hours of continuous use. With IC Resources 12 hour a day operation over 5.5 days, the lights will not need replacing for 17 years, saving hundreds of pounds annually in maintenance costs over the product’s lifetime and bringing the total savings over the lifetime to £52,628.

Outdoor LED lighting with a designer edge LED lighting should now be the norm, there’s no excuse for fitting energy-guzzling CFL, halogen and even incandescent bulbs in our schools, offices, public buildings or homes. All the options you need should be readily available from your favourite local wholesaler. One of the names you are most likely to hear when you enquire at the wholesalers about LED outdoor lighting with LEDs, is NIGHTeye from Timeguard, the firm that has consistently led the way with its combinations of innovative design, superior quality and fast-fix convenience.
Design The original ultra-compact pan-and-tilt Timeguard LED NIGHTeyes broke the mould and were a completely new concept in outdoor lighting design. Small and yet remarkably powerful, these floodlights are compact and stylish enough to be used anywhere. A range of more business-like looking LED floodlights followed, with precision- designed lenses and reflector plates to ensure that the light that is emitted is not only diffused and more pleasing to the eye, but also give more comprehensive coverage for security. Quality and reliability The quality of light emitted by LEDs can vary between the stark glare of a light which is no more than an array of LED ‘dots’ and the pleasing output from units with lenses designed to create a more gentle, diffused light, as with the NIGHTeye range. Of course an LED lamp requires a lot more than the diodes – there is also a driver which needs to be suitable to last the intended life of the product and a heat sink to dissipate the heat produced and the all-important PIR detectors. The quality of these components is as important as that of the diode in building a long-lasting product. For instance, relatively few of the PIRs on the market are actually rated to switch LEDs which, despite their low rating, do generate a significant spike in switching – be sure to check these ratings. All the information you need should be on the box. . Some LED lamps do not even have proper cooling fins. Very cheap is rarely very cheerful. The most economical lighting of all is the lighting made from quality components which can be fitted and forgotten, and that usually means a trusted brand name like Timeguard. Bringing your Building to Life There is more to life than black and grey. With the recent Valspar paint campaign, people are becoming inspired to colour outside the lines. RCM put the colour back into building with their Cladcolour facades. RCM Supports DIY SOS - Charity Project Special Created in 1972 – The Spinney – a centre in which the Local Community Association could run a play scheme, was founded by Peterborough Development Corporation and the City Council. The building was threatened with closure on numerous occasions but the local community fought hard to keep it open. Sadly, in the summer of 2013 the council made the decision to close the centre, leaving the parents and children without this widely used and much loved facility. However, faith was not lost and local residents, Little Miracles and the Scouts Association decided to create a new management community with the aim to save The Spinney. The community’s hopes were lifted by the BBC show DIY SOS and amazingly the project was accepted to be involved in the programme with aim of engaging with businesses to build a brand new centre built. The project was constructed by hundreds of volunteers from around the UK including decorators, electricians, carpenters, joiners, landscapers, builders, plasterers, plumbers and engineers. The teams challenge was to knock down and rebuild the centre, relying entirely on the use of donated materials. RCM made the decision to donate their specialist Cladcolour facade. The prefinished fibre cement cladding panel which requires minimal maintenance and

with RCM’s Cladcolour is easy to install, making it perfect for this build. The Spinney was constructed from a variety of the different colours that Cladcolour is available in. This created a fun and playful aesthetic for the children using the facilities. Each of the 238 cladding panels had a unique reference, to allow its location to be identified within the giant jigsaw puzzle in the design. The Little Miracles site was the size of three average homes and was built from the ground up – making it the shows biggest challenge to date. The build was achieved in just nine days, opening on 15 September 2013, with a finished value of £1 million. The Spinney is now a play centre accessible to families with children that have additional needs, disabilities and life limiting conditions. This very special build provides a place for the children of over 800 families in the area as well as other children’s groups like the Scouts. This project was unique as it didn’t just provide a building, but a safe place to help families through the good and bad times of their lives. 83% of the families that use Little Miracles live below the poverty line, and as such all of the services they run are free of charge. For many of the children that use the centre, ‘Little Miracles’ is the only place they are able to communicate freely, make friends, and most importantly, be themselves. Families of the children that now use the facility are overwhelmed by the outcome of this charity project and thrilled that their children can play in a safe environment without judgement as well as providing a place where parents can chat to other parents who understand their situation and ultimately support one another.

Fakro Conservation Windows For Low Roofline Installation With over 250 size and glazing options, FAKRO not only offers the largest standard range of roof windows in conservation style but routinely manufactures products to bespoke requirements. Planners are becoming increasingly prescriptive in conservation areas, so FAKRO’s choice of 3 installation depths and scope to fit either direct to rafters or battens is attracting considerable attention. Such facilities are not offered by any other manufacturer and for slates in particular, installing roof windows low within the roof line gives them a neat and unobtrusive appearance. For deeply profiled tiles too, however, the facility to raise installation depth is similarly effective. When specifying for the restoration of the Co-Operative Pioneers’ Museum in Rochdale, architects Loop Systems selected FAKRO windows to replace 8 old rooflights set within a traditional stone slate roof with diminishing courses. The mid-Victorian building is within a conservation area and has considerable historic significance so the new windows were specified with a bespoke double mullion bar to match those they replaced. An EZJ flashing provided the required low profile when the roof build-up was upgraded to comply with current Building Regulations. Characteristic features of conservation roof windows are their black vertical mullion bar, cladding and flashing but from the home owner’s perspective windows offer the same internal features and contemporary styling in either natural pine, white PU-coated pine or PVC. Windows can be fitted with ease from inside the roof and with the operating handle in the base of the sash they can be positioned closer to the apex to enhance availability of natural light. Operation of the windows is also far easier as the handle is easier to reach, requiring far less frequent use of an extension rod. VMZINC As part of Austin Smith Lord’s design for the full renovation of Liverpool Central Library, the original zinc roof of the Picton Reading Room, built in 1879, had to be replaced. 800m2 of VMZINC® QUARTZZINC PLUS® was installed over much of the original Victorian boarding, a combination of batten cap and standing seam panels being used to satisfy English Heritage requirements for the Unesco World Heritage Site. Details were replicated with the help of the VMZINC heritage service in a design which has provided an

The striking triangular shaped construction of panels have given the University of Southern Denmark’s (SDU’s) Kolding Campus a distinct exterior that is both highly functional and also an inspirational landmark for its city. The screens feature a bespoke perforation pattern that works with their opening angle of 30 degrees to give the optimal balance of light and energy in and out of the building. This also contributes toward facilitating the well-being of the building’s inhabitants by providing a good view of outdoor areas from inside.
RMIG
is the world’s largest manufacturer and supplier of perforated metal, providing specialist and bespoke solutions for the built environment. A point of further innovation has been the use of intelligent sensors, which are attached to each of the 1,600 screens. These sensors measure outdoor light and heat levels and transmit the data to a small motor. This automatically adjusts each screen to ensure that those using the building experience a dynamic change of light during the day and can enjoy a comfortable indoor climate in the rooms along the facade. These unique features contribute to reducing the amount of energy consumed by the building, helping to achieve its lowenergy status. The facade panels are manufactured from 4,500m² of 3.0mm thick anodised aluminium and feature keyholeperforated ImagePerf to give the exterior a vibrant appearance. When closed, the adaptable screens have been designed to lie flat on the frontage, however, when half or fully open they point outward, giving the building a dramatic look at all times. The triangular motif is also repeated throughout the building in different forms and shapes, giving the construction an open impression. In the evening, the light from the inside of the building pours through the perforated pattern and makes the facade appear more transparent. Students and passers-by on their way to or from the university get an immediate sense of the interior activities of the campus, ensuring a link between the inner life of the building and the outside spectator. This is just one of many examples of how RMIG’s dedicated architectural and construction sector support programme, City Emotion, is assisting architects and contractors in bringing their urban design concepts to life. NEW PIR OPTION FOR CYGNUS WIRELESS ALARM SYSTEM A programme of constant innovation at Bull Products sees the launch of a new PIR option to its successful range of Cygnus wireless alarm systems. The Cygnus system, which is now firmly established as one of the most advanced wireless alarm systems for use on construction sites, now benefits from additional functionality. THE NEXT STEP IN ALARM EVOLUTION Aico, UK’s market leader in domestic mains powered Fire and Carbon Monoxide (CO) detection, unveils the latest in Smoke and Heat Alarm technology with its new 160e Series. With over £280 million of the 160 Series alarms sold to date, the new 160e Series builds on this high quality, reliable and proven technology to produce a cleaner, modern designed alarm containing a whole raft of enhancements to increase protection and performance. The alarms have been completely redesigned to lend themselves to suiting most modern properties and to complement the latest Aico accessories. The new 160e design is up to 18% slimmer when compared to the previous 160RC Series alarms allowing them to be less obtrusive in the room, whilst maintaining the same easi-fit footprint making it simple to upgrade from previous Aico alarms. The units have been made all the easier to install. Additional screw holes have been incorporated into the base to save on installation times with all hole positions matching previous alarm bases, removing the need to drill extra holes. The holes themselves have been adapted to enable N° 8 Screws to be used and bigger terminals have been incorporated to readily accommodate 1.5mm² cable, making it easier to wire. ‘O’ for Optical and ‘I’ for Ionisation have been imprinted on the alarm test buttons and colour coding added to the back of every alarm to make it easier to check the right alarm type is being fitted. Components within the alarms provide improved performance in response time and resistance to false alarms. The Ei164e Heat Alarm has a new thermistor giving a faster alarm response when the trigger temperature is reached. The Ei166e Optical Alarm has a new cylindrical sensor chamber encapsulated by a bonded protective mesh to keep out potential contaminates such as dust and insects whilst still allowing the free flow of smoke. With Aico’s award winning RadioLINK wireless alarm interconnection, a firm favourite of both installers and landlords, the 160e Series of alarms now comes with a plug in RadioLINK+ module negating the need for a separate RadioLINK base. The Ei100MRF RadioLINK+ module simply slots into the alarm and is automatically activated ready to be House Coded in with the rest of the system. Such a design saves on installation time and reduces associated costs. With the introduction of the RadioLINK+ module, the House Coding slot has now been moved onto the actual alarm making it easy to access and use and, most importantly, enabling all the alarms to be House Coded in situ. This not only makes for quicker installation, but also allows the installer to check RF signal strength at the exact location the alarms will be when protecting the occupants and dwelling. RadioLINK+ has also made it easier to expand existing systems. With RadioLINK+ only one alarm in the existing system needs putting into Remote House Code mode, which
signals to all other devices on the house coded system that a new alarm/accessory needs adding, as opposed to all the alarms. RadioLINK+ has an enhanced self-monitoring function that recognises system tampering or alarm head removal. Each alarm in the system has the ability to identify the alarm with the strongest Radio Frequency (RF) signal and automatically pair with it. At regular intervals, these paired alarms communicate with each other so that if one alarm is removed from its base the other will acknowledge the lack of response with an indicator light and log this in its memory, even if the missing alarm is replaced. It can also send an ‘Alarm Removed’ signal when connected to an Ei414 Fire/ CO Alarm Interface and third party device e.g. Warden Call or other monitoring systems. Designed to provide flexible solutions, delivering the highest quality protection for BS 5839-6 Grade D applications, the new 160e Series includes Optical, Heat and Ionisation Alarm models. These mains powered alarms come with 10 year rechargeable Lithium cells to provide over six month’s back-up in the event of a mains failure. 160e alarms are compatible with existing Aico alarms and accessories, enabling for full system upgrades or simple system expansion using the new models. The original 160 Series, launched in 1999, has been installed into millions of properties across the UK. Aico has invested considerably in the range over the years, with a number of key developments such as RadioLINK wireless alarm interconnection and remote control. Extraordinary architectural project in Qatar features Neolith by TheSize Neolith by TheSize, a brand of all-natural, premium sintered compact surfaces, has been used to clad the new Salata Building in the heart of Doha, Qatar. Designed by Elias Bou Raffoul from E-Square Architects, this spectacular construction stands out for its striking geometrical aesthetics.
Elias Bou Raffoul, architect, explains: “The irregular lines embody the contrast and the relationship between a full and empty space, between an inner and outer space, and the negative and positive, creating the different structures of the building.” Neolith by TheSize was specified for its lightweight and large slab formats that provide a high performance solution and reduce installation time. Neolith’s ventilated façade system can contribute to a building’s thermal efficiency in terms of energy consumption, with savings reaching up to 40%. Furthermore, the cladding offers insulation since it is resistant to UV exposure and temperature changes, factors that are crucial especially in a region where the climate can reach 50ºC. Elias Bou Raffoul used Neolith Avorio and Nero from the Colorfeel Collection, as well as Rojo Qatar, a colour developed exclusively for the project, to create a unique building that is durable, versatile and sustainable.

Garden makeover puts
Cornish B&B on a firm footing A Cornish inn and restaurant has transformed a neglected, overgrown garden into a spectacular decked terrace with exotic plants, walkways, ponds and waterfalls. The Waterwheel Inn, which offers bed and breakfast accomodation, a restaurant and bar in the historic White River valley near St Austell, is creating an idyllic outdoor space as part of the property’s ten-year renovation. Owners Mark and Francesca took over the Waterwheel Inn in April 2011 and are giving the outdoor space an ambitious makeover as part of a ten-year project. They had assumed that timber decking would not be a viable option for the new terrace, which sits under mature plants and trees in a shaded valley and would become very wet and slippery. The couple were researching safer rubber flooring options when they discovered Gripsure – the UK’s leading non-slip decking manufacturer, based just three miles away.
The garden gives guests the opportunity to enjoy the mild climate of mid-Cornwall as well as appreciating the owners’ extensive collection of tree ferns and observing local wildlife. BITUCHEM MATERIAL USED FOR SAFER PLAYGROUND A newly constructed primary school in Waterlooville, Hampshire has applied over 1500 square metres of Bituchem’s most popular hard landscaping material, Natratex Cotswold, to its outdoor playground and teaching areas.
Berewood Primary School opened its gates for its first year of teaching in September last year. Built to accommodate 420 children aged four to eleven, the new primary school is part of the University of Chichester Academy Trust and is just one element of the ongoing development in West of Waterlooville. Bituchem’s Natratex Cotswold material was specified in buff due to its visually attractive qualities when compared with a standard black asphalt tarmac surface but with the same smooth properties that make asphalt a safe surface to use around schools. Paula Downard, Landscape Architect at Hampshire County Council commented, “The appearance and practicality of the Natratex Cotswold material make it the perfect solution for this application and we are very pleased with the end result. Hampshire County Council specified this material for another project nearby and so we were able to view the performance and colour beforehand. We received a sample of the material from Bituchem and were advised that the colour would eventually fade to a softer, more attractive colour, which was extremely helpful in managing our expectations.” The Natratex Cotswold material is formed of natural coloured aggregates combined with a specially formulated clear resin binder to produce a smooth, hard-wearing surface whilst offering a natural stone finish. This strong binder reduces the likelihood of the material deteriorating causing potholes or other breakages in the surface, making it a smoother and safer surface for young children to play on. Suitable for new constructions, overlays or regeneration projects, the Natratex Cotswold material is very versatile in its application and can be used for all areas used by pedestrians and light vehicles. The material is also very environmentally friendly with a fast and simple application making it an easy specification for both private and public sector projects. 48 Industry News The Institute of Carpenters Celebrates 125th Birthday The event, which took place on Saturday 13 June, was sponsored by the UK’s biggest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade, IronmongeryDirect and saw 70 members of the institute come together to celebrate and also showcase their work and products.
The day began with an exhibition, where members had the opportunity to share best practice advice and demonstrate an array of their work and historical tools. Those who attended the event were able to find out about the latest innovations and products that will benefit them, as well as gain insight from industry specialists.

This was then followed by the IOC’s annual general meeting and esteemed keynote speaker Barbara Wallis, a close patron of the IOC, who did a presentation on vernacular buildings in England. Later, members were invited to network at the celebratory ‘President’s Luncheon’ which was finished with a talk about encouraging young people to get into carpentry and bringing cultures together to benefit the trade by Jason Howe from Bishop Auckland College and Markus Weitzmann from Biberach College, Germany. IronmongeryDirect had a stand at the event and displayed a selection of products from its range of over 14,000 products. Modular building partnership
Modular 105 has partnered with COILLTE to use its Medite Tricoya Extreme wooden panels in the construction of its outdoor modular buildings. Medite Tricoya Extreme was specified to surround the structure of the aluminium frame of the building. Used as cladding for each of the outdoor structures, the panels acetylation treatment process is designed to be durable and resistant to fungi. Paul Cameron, managing director at Modular 105, said: “The strength and ability of the panel to create a high quality finish is important to us when designing a project. Extension to Gentofte School unveiled Kebony, the sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood, presents their latest project, in collaboration with Arkitema Architects, at Gentofte School. The new addition to the school in Denmark creates a further 460m² of space, which can accommodate 100 children, spread across two floors. The extension houses three classrooms, a common room and a double height workshop as well as a large roof terrace. The designers, Arkitema Architects, worked in a close collaboration with the school’s management and teaching teams to ensure the space was practical and ergonomic for both the primary classes and the after school activities. The children at Gentofte school age from 5-9 years, as such the building has been completed with special features such as sliding walls that also function as writing boards and can be easily operated by the children. The new space can also be converted into either a single or double-height space
and can be divided into compartments to host several classrooms dependent on the needs of the students and teachers. The large south facing princess balconies will similarly afford further dynamic teaching methods by creating additional outdoor and recreational spaces. The interior has also been constructed with the unique needs of the pupils in mind, resulting in an innovative range of uses. For example, it is possible to drive cars in through the double doors located at the entrance, rendering the building operational as an engineering workshop. Additional functions of the building are equally inventive, the double height space can serve as an orangery; in-keeping with the ecological theme of the build. Sustainability was key to the design
ethos, leading to the decision to clad the entire façade of the new extension, just under 400m², in Kebony wood. Produced using sustainably sourced species of soft wood which are impregnated with a non-chemical bio-based product and heated under pressure, Kebony is a highly durable and environmental product. The use of sustainable Kebony wood also means that the façade is totally maintenance free and will not be susceptible to damage through wear and weathering in the future. Consequently, the façade will soon be covered by a ‘vertical forest’ with a depth of up to 60cm and a wall of climbing plants which will eventually house birds and insects.
HASSELL’s Medibank one of the healthiest workplaces in world Melbourne’s recently opened Medibank Place - designed by HASSELL for health insurer, Medibank – has been described as being ‘hard-wired for health’. Four months after moving in, 79% of employees report working more collaboratively, 70% report feeling healthier, and 66% said they were more productive. HASSELL has drawn on a range of features to help promote health and wellbeing. A ramp from the main entrance on Bourke Street spirals upwards from street level, allowing Medibank employees easy access to bike storage on their way in to work. Those who want a more vigorous workout during the day can also make use of a multipurpose sports court at ground level. Medibank Place offers its employees real freedom to choose how and where they work. People can now select from more than 26 types of work settings, ranging
from indoor quiet spaces and collaborative hubs to wifi-enabled balconies and places to stand and work. Circadian lighting in certain areas of the workspace mimics natural daylight patterns supporting people’s biorhythms. Medibank Place incorporates an enormous number of plants – some 2,300 inside the building and 520 in modular planter boxes on the façade, as well as two 25-metre high street-facing green walls. Within the work place, this helps relieve stress, improve internal air quality and transforms views from grey to green. The effect of the planting, combined with the curves of the building itself, is to convey a softer, more human character.
