A transformation by the riverside Black and This waterfront museum in Canada has been completely transformed so it can best display its formidable collection of works of art Designed by Les architectes FABG, the Musée d’art de Joliette is recognized as Quebec’s most important regional art museum. While pursuing the objectives of conservation, dissemination and research established over half a century ago by its founders, the Musée continues to expand its permanent collection, which currently comprises some 8,500 works held in four collections: Canadian art, European art, contemporary art and archaeology. Les architectes FABG realised the complete transformation and expansion of the original building was necessary to offer of a wide range of programs structured around the promotion of its permanent collection and the presentation of temporary exhibitions, as well as a host of educational and cultural activities for visitors of all ages. The addition of new flexible gallery space, animation rooms for youth, a multipurpose café, conference rooms and a rooftop terrace were necessary to open up the institution to the community and to allow it to play a larger role in the lives of the citizens of Joliette and its surrounding region. According to V2com the objective was to enhance the connection between the institution and the public and this was achieved by adding three new volumes to the building that accentuate the dynamism of the existing cruciform composition and allows passers-by a glimpse of the activity happening within. Furthermore, the fenestrated spaces frame views of the river L’Assomption and surrounding cityscape from within. Since its inauguration, the museum has become an important setting for social activities and gatherings such a classes, creative studios, performances, exhibitions, guided tours, cocktails, and concerts. Particular attention was paid to the original building by revealing and cleaning the existing concrete structure that had been covered with brick and plaster over time. In order to facilitate visitor orientation and create a dramatic double-height space, part of the second floor concrete slab was demolished at the entrance of the building here the original museum atrium had once existed. The museum greatly benefits from a succession of loosely programmed spaces with varied spatial arrangements that permit and encourage a multiplicity of functions. Furthermore, the reverberation time of each of these spaces was modulated with the use of absorptive acoustical surfaces, while motorized blinds control natural light levels, and a series of audiovisual infrastructures allow multimedia content to be broadcasted and featured in all of these spaces. A work of art, conceived as part of the integration of art to architecture program, is perched at the top of the new, fully glazed emergency staircase and is seamlessly integrated in the exhibition circuit.

white simplicity in Charlevoix The windows of the ‘Blanche’ Chalet help the owners to maximize the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains Designed by ACDF Architecture the “Blanche” Chalet, whose name evokes the spirit of the vernacular houses of the region, is situated in La Malbaie’s area of the “Terrasses Cap à l’Aigle” in Canada. Its simple and pure architecture gently complements the landscape of Charlevoix in a modern fashion. The raw concrete materiality of the lower level is a nod to the stone foundations of the old wooden barns that once swept the landscape. This base also serves as the foundation for the main entrance and houses the technical functions of the cottage. Perched on the podium, the upper two levels are clad in a white stained wood, which is reminiscent of lime plaster that was applied to the ancestral homes of the area. The wood is smooth or raw textured and, at times, creates an openwork siding, depending on the façade, bringing lightness and joy to the house. The four bedrooms of the “Blanche” Chalet are centrally located in order to maximize the panoramic views of the living spaces that are at the top level.

Sheppard Robson aims high in London Plans for major mixed-use development in Tower Hamlets, London submitted Sheppard Robson has submitted plans to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets for a residential-led, mixed-use development in Whitechapel. Located on Cavell Street, the project for KTS Group Ltd will be formed of a 24-storey residential high-rise building (Building One) which sits alongside another eight-storey building (Building Two) that will house 40,000 sq ft of new office space and 28 dualaspect, affordable residential apartments. The two elements will be linked and enlivened by a series of public and external spaces. Building One, the 85-appartment high-rise element, will occupy the north end of the site and will house commercial space on the ground level to animate the project at street level. The exterior of the building will be characterised by metallic cladding, with the textured surface detail a subtle representation of the area’s heritage of textile making. Vertical windows to the north and south elevations will frame views of London and the streetscape below, whilst maximising the amount of daylight into the apartments. The east and west sides are more solid in appearance, with horizontal windows carefully positioned to avoid solar gain and frame panoramic views of the City of London. Building One, as with the overall development, will be characterised by generous communal spaces. The homes will have large, recessed balconies; this will create an opportunity for residents to add greenery to the exterior that

NOT YOUR USUAL PLATFORM LIFT? Have you ever wanted the convenience and ease of installation of a platform lift but with the feel and quality of a traditional enclosed passenger lift? The M6000LS cabin platform lift gives you the best of both worlds, with a fully enclosed cabin, automatic centre opening doors and single press buttons with a single swing landing door, but only requires a 100mm pit whereas a traditional passenger lift would need a 1000mm pit. Its self supporting structure also means that expensive building works for shaft walls are not required. The advantages of the M6000LS over a traditional passenger lift go on... Traditional Passenger Lift M6000LS Pit Headroom height Motor room Power supply Lifting beam Scaffolding Self supporting shaft

100mm 2550mm Not required Single phase Not required Not required Yes

1000mm >3000mm Required Three phase Required Required No – shaft needs to be built

Over the years, Invalifts have been asked to install lifts into some exceedingly small spaces. The M6000LS allows for this with the smallest footprint being as small as 750mm wide and 1000mm deep. The unit can also be made as large as 1000mm wide by 2160mm or 1300mm wide by 1750mm deep to cater for a wide range of requirements. This makes the M6000LS a perfect solution for installation within an open stairwell. The internal size of the cabin is also impressive, as the car width is only 200mm less than the shaft width and the car depth is an amazing 150mm less than the shaft depth, thereby giving a remarkable car size to shaft ratio. These sizes are achieved through the use of a unique belt drive system and so vital space is not taken up by the use of a counterweight in the shaft. The ability to personalise the M6000LS by being able to add glazing to any of the shaft sides and to the car walls allows you to maximise light in the building. Other items that can be given that personal touch include interior cabin finishes, shaft colours and choice of landing door to name a few. To find out more about the M6000LS cabin platform lift, you can give Invalifts a call on 0845 468 2543 and speak to one of their friendly experts, or visit www.invalifts.com

Romag glass lights the way at Sci-Tech Park artwork HIGH performance laminated coloured glass from Romag is set to light the way as the centrepiece of a new elemental garden design feature in Cheshire. The contemplative Linear Garden has been newly created at Sci-Tech Park in Daresbury, one of two National Science and Innovation Campuses established in 2006 to provide commercial support and world-class technology facilities for fast growing high-tech companies. A striking pathway of light will wind its way through the 10-acre site, reflecting the narrative of science moving forward through visionary re-imaginings of scientific greats such as physicist Albert Einstein, and mathematician and astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. Five coloured garden areas have been created, branching off this pathway in the order that the colours appear in the electromagnetic spectrum: red, yellow, green, blue and violet. These will be home to a collection of striking structures and designs that have been integrated with a variety of Vanceva architectural glass panels cut and shaped to a high tolerance using Romag’s water-jet cutting technology at its HQ in Consett, County Durham. More than 25 sections of glass have been produced and supplied by Romag, which also provided additional technical and processing expertise to Broadbent Studios, the Chester-based designers behind the garden concept. Project manager Mandy Taylor said that the project had benefitted from technical support from Romag throughout, which included the specification of processes, glass thickness and recommendations for a decorative interlayer supplier. She added: “It was important to use a coloured Vanceva layer and decorative printed layer to get the required visuals. Here, Romag impressed with its technical experience and expertise of using these processes together.” Paul Cruddace, Romag’s sales and marketing director, added: “We were delighted to be involved with this innovative, interesting project. “It showcases our expertise and skills in laminating structural, architectural glass to the highest quality and specification for ground breaking and innovative public projects.” Romag is a UK pioneer with more than 70 years of glass laminating experience and expertise. Established in 1943, the firm has built a strong reputation around the globe for manufacturing high quality specialist security glass products in a range of shapes and sizes to meet individual client aspirations. The company has supplied safety and security glass for projects in national infrastructure, transportation, government buildings and leisure facilities and utilises processes that are certified ISO 9001 and it also holds both ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 certification. Creating a country feel with contemporary style When Mark and Melanie bought their 1920s house near Kidderminster, in the West Midlands, six years ago, they were already thinking about the changes they could make to put their own stamp on the property.

When it came to specifying the finishes in the extension, the couple wanted to maintain a country feel, in keeping with the period property – but enhanced by modern benefits. “We knew we wanted folding doors at the back of the house and had almost made a decision on a particular product. We went to the Grand Designs Live show in Birmingham, just to get some inspiration for putting the finishing touches to our plans really – and saw Centor Integrated Doors for the first time. We knew straightaway that they were what we wanted!

Along with their son Lewis and dog King, they’ve recently completed a dramatic “The mid-oak interior finish, the integrated approach – exactly what we renovation of the entire ground floor space – in were looking for. For us, it’s all about the aesthetics really; the fact that a way that has transformed daily family life. there’s very little hardware on show, the discretion of the locks.” “We took about 18 months to design and plan what we wanted,” explains Mark. “Our vision involved extending and opening the back of the house up completely to create a spacious kitchen/living area that would effectively invite the garden into the house.”

The family specified integrated light-filtering shades, which they use to reduce the glare of the sun on a bright afternoon. Mark explains: “In the height of summer, it can get really hot when the sun comes round the back of the house.”

They’re also impressed by the innovative engineering that makes the doors so easy to operate. “They slide so smoothly – I can’t get over that!” says Mark. “Alternative products tend to feel quite heavy and awkward, but these just glide open and closed despite the weight of the glazing involved in them. They’re very well built – good quality in everything from the hinges to the locks. And I really love that.” The family now spend much of their time in the kitchen and living area – enjoying the year-round benefits of inside-outside living. “Before, we only had a small French door. But now, the whole of the back of the house is totally opened up, which is just beautiful,” explains Mark. “It’s completely changed the way we live really. This area beside the doors, with the traditional-style wood burner, is certainly my favourite part of the house. “This summer, we’ve had some great parties, with the doors opening straight out onto the garden and the swimming pool. They’ve helped to create a completely different feel to the house. We can now look out over the entire garden, right up to the woods... “The whole renovation has transformed our home. But these doors are really the centre point of it all – they provide the wow factor.”

Seriously Good Stuff Home and Contemporary Gift & Living Trends at Autumn Fair 2016

Autumn Fair returns to the NEC this September with over 300 exhibitors across the Home and re-named ‘Contemporary Gift & Living’ sectors, offering visitors the opportunity to see, buy and get inspired by an array of carefully edited, on-trend collections.

From furniture to textiles and accessories, buyers can expect to find understated, craft inspired pieces from the likes of Kaemingk, Chic Antique, NLXL, Dutch Imports (Home) and BY BOO, Ib Laursen and Hubsch (Contemporary Gift & Living), perfectly in-sync with the seasonal trend of ‘Artisan’ inspiration predictions from leading trend forecaster, WGSN Lifestyle & Interiors. Laurence Pasquier, Editor at WGSN Lifestyle & Interiors comments on the key AW16/17 trends: ‘The ‘Artisan’ trend is named after the crafting and making movement that currently sees handmade products gain considerable traction – the demand for kits to make your own everything from wall hangings to cleaning products is getting bigger and bigger. Brushstrokes and drops of paint add to this handmade aesthetic. On the other end of the spectrum, the ‘Offbeat’ trend celebrates playfulness with a nostalgia towards an 80’s, pre-internet aesthetic. Print and pattern is key with this trend – think geometric compositions pairing bright hues such as tomato red, apple green and soda

Visitors will also have the opportunity to hear from various speakers across the four show days including Martin Holland, winner of BBC’s The Great Interior Design Challenge 2015. Commenting on seasonal home trends, Martin said: ‘Dark and moody interiors will be taking centre stage this AW; it’s all about deep forest greens, inky blues and charcoal blacks in rich hues. Bold statements with clashing patterns and textures on chairs, cushions and rugs are the perfect partner for this look. Spaces should visually draw you in and envelope you and Autumn Fair is the perfect home for brands to show off their take on key trends and for buyers to be inspired for the season ahead.’

i2i Events Portfolio Director, Naomi Barton, said: ‘We know pink, mixed together with touches of fluoro yellow as well as that buyers are using Autumn Fair to buy in-season, so it is graphic black and white. The Icynene Insulation System

The Icynene Insulation System is a soft, flexible, breathable, foam insulation and air barrier system. Sprayed as a liquid Icynene expands to 100 times its initial volume in seconds filling every nook, cranny and penetration into walls, ceilings and floors. Icynene’s unique formulation sets it apart from other insulation products offering many advantages over traditional insulation materials and more modern alternatives. While all materials of equal thermal resistance perform identically under laboratory conditions the same is not true in real life; some insulation materials off-gas which, over time, diminishes their effectiveness, others allow the passage of air through gaps between them and other building components. Installing

t18t

Icynene ensures no loss of performance and it will remain the same over the lifetime of the building. Minimising air leakage from a building enables the correct design of heating and ventilation systems, saving money on the initial installation and future running costs. Buildings with Icynene installed have easily reached Passivhaus standards for air leakage without the use of membranes and tapes. Needing only a short installation period, Icynene can save you valuable build time and is therefore extremely cost effective compared to other products, not only that but you benefit from insulation and airtightness in one application.

The Icynene Insulation System is 100% water blown containing no toxic chemicals. Icynene doesn’t contain any HFC’s, CFC’s, HFA or HCFC’s and it remains soft and flexible accommodating any normal expansion, contraction or movement within a building. So whether you plan to build, renovate or upgrade the Icynene Insulation System will deliver the performance you can count on for a lifetime of savings and comfort.

Kitchens, Bedrooms, Bathrooms

S

hower enclosure specialist, Lakes Bathrooms, has launched PureVueHD, an optically superior, low-iron glass that appears entirely clear. This new high quality glass is being offered as standard on shower enclosures, doors and bath screens in both its Classic and Coastline Collection, so no incremental charge will be made for this high-end, ultraclear look.

PureVueHD has minimal iron content, meaning that the glass appears clear, rather than having the green tinge that is visible in standard glass. This is because very high transmission levels, of around 90 per cent, enable as much light as possible to pass through PureVueHD glass, making everything viewed through it appear lighter and brighter. With standard glass the iron content reduces light transmission, which creates the green hue that tints everything viewed through it and is particularly noticeable on the edges of the shower enclosure, door or bath screen. This dramatically clearer glass allows the bathroom’s colour palette to be viewed with untainted accuracy. The difference in colours, sharpness and enhanced clarity that PureVueHD makes in the bathroom is like the vivid quality brought to the living room by high definition TV. Whilst low-iron glass can cost as much as 50 per cent more due to the higher grade of silica that it demands, Lakes Bathrooms is supplying it as standard; without adding to its prices. So this visual luxury is now part of all products in its Classic and Coastline collections (excluding only the Mirror range).

Lakes Bathrooms launches ultra-clear PureVueHD glass without charge

t20t

The choice of PureVueHD products includes shower enclosures, shower doors and bath screens, with over 40 styles. The latest walk-in ranges are included, plus heavier thickness glass, which shows even more strongly the contrast between standard ‘green’ and this new ultra-clear glass. PureVueHD products start from £145.00 plus VAT and are detailed in the latest catalogue from Lakes Bathrooms. For more information or to find the nearest stockist visit www.lakesbathrooms.co.uk

Green is so last year

Standard glass has a green tinge

PureVueHD glass is optically superior and ultra-clear

Standard glass always has a green tinge that’s particularly apparent when you view the edge of the glass. PureVueHD by comparison is dramatically clearer. Its reduced iron content reduces the greenish hue to zero levels, so the glass almost disappears and the natural beauty of anything seen through it truly shines. From anybody else this dramatic advance would carry a significant premium. From Lakes Bathrooms, where superior comes as standard, this extra clarity comes with no extra cost. Your local Lakes representative will be pleased to show you a side by side comparison and explain more about the brilliance and immediate availability of PureVueHD enclosures, walk-ins and bath screens.

New Thinking for The Smallest Room

Bathroom Brands launch new bathroom range designed with the British home in mind Despite the typical British bathroom being only six feet square or smaller, today’s bathroom remains one of the most considered spaces in home design. With new homes including two or more bathroom spaces as standard, most of which are small in dimension, builders and plumbers are actively seeking products that make the best use of available space for the homeowner. Consumer design expectations for these compact rooms is fuelled by TV programmes, magazines and brochures showcasing high design standards across the home. Understandably, homeowners want these same standards despite limitations on space. With this in mind new bathroom brand Thirty6, launched this week, has rearticulated the bathroom with fresh thinking from design company Bluefrog. The result is MyHome™, the first instalment of a new range made for typical British bathroom spaces that will allow homeowners to stamp a unique identity in the one room where privacy is assured. MyHome™ has been designed to make the room feel more spacious whatever the size.” Roger Cooper, Director for Thirty6, explains, “Photographing bathrooms for brochures or TV requires studio sets far larger than the usual British bathroom. In order to achieve the best from the set design, the physical spaces used never reflect real bathrooms. However, meeting a customer’s expectations in a space only 6-foot square can be achieved by innovative product design and clever room planning.” As an example, super-thin basin rims that mean the washing area of a 50cm basin is as large as a 60cm size. Dual-flush compact toilets that have the shortest projections into the room are matched up with an elegant, slim cistern. Innovation with mini basin mixers designed to perfectly match with smaller basins and an Xofill fitting that does away with the need for bath taps, so leaving the bath rim clear of brassware. MyHome™ also includes a range of compact baths starting at just 150cm in length and a stylish range of furniture. Stocked exclusively by the Plumb Center group, Thirty6 is the solution for builders, installers and plumbers who are looking for top quality, well-designed products at a highly competitive price. With availability from over 500 Plumb Center branches across the UK and Northern Ireland, Thirty6 can also be supplied by bathroom designers and retailers. Roger Cooper commented “With rising house prices and space at a premium new homes will need to make small spaces seem big. This range meets the needs of housebuilders and those who are refurbishing existing buildings.”

JIS Europe Ltd is the original supplier of stainless steel towel rails to the UK bathroom industry. Where we led others inevitably followed. Speaking of the reasons why we chose to manufacture our range of towel rails from stainless steel is Marketing and Design Director, Claire Wilkinson.

Equally as important, especially in today’s climate, is that the manufacturing process for stainless steel is ecologically sound. Stainless steel is 100% recyclable in itself and is manufactured from over 90% recyclable product. Furthermore there are no harmful chemical plating processes involved in its manufacture. It has a deep lustrous appearance making it aesthetically pleasing. We supply our entire range in both a polished and brushed finish. They are quite different in appearance and open up the bathroom to both a more traditional and modern aesthete. Stainless steel is hygienic and easy to maintain. It is utilised in both commercial kitchens and hospitals throughout, where its hygienic qualities have long been recognised.

“We were looking at various business opportunities and had decided on ladder towel rails as it was an emerging growth market. Whilst I was in the midst of the initial design process, I had a number of bathroom accessories in my bathroom and I had noticed that some of them had pitted and rusted whilst others of the same age where still pristine. I asked my husband why this was and he said that the rusted ones where chrome plated whilst the others were manufactured from stainless steel. I surmised that if this had happened to me it had It is a hard material to master, in that it needs to be well manufactured from the off, there are no plating processes to cover up shoddy workmanship. happened to others. Don’t allow Subfloor Moisture to Delay Occupation with F. Ball’s Range of High Performance Waterproof Surface Membranes! As the UK’s premier flooring product specialist, F. Ball has developed a specialist market leading range of high performance products, providing a wide range of tried and tested subfloor moisture control solutions. The technical experts at F. Ball know that the way to ensure the lasting performance of a new floorcovering installation is to deal with any damp or moisture problems from the outset. If not dealt with successfully, not only will the appearance of the new floorcovering be ruined, but the very fabric of its construction and ultimately the integrity of the installation, will be compromised too. Every specifier and contractor knows the old maxim ‘time is money’, so when there are products that can deliver better economy, are easier to apply, and provide time-saving solutions guaranteed to perform perfectly, they’re bound to attract a lot of attention. Accurate moisture testing in accordance with the British Codes of Practice BS 8203, BS 5325 and BS 8201 is essential to determine the Relative Humidity (RH) level within a subfloor. F. Ball recommend moisture levels be checked accurately by use of their approved Digital Hygrometers. An indication of the presence of moisture can be quickly determined using the Protimeter Aquant or Protimeter Moisture Measurement System (MMS). If the relative humidity is below 75% it is safe to proceed with a fitting. Where the RH is above 75%, the installation should

t32t

not proceed, as excess moisture in the floor could result in blistering of the floorcovering or complete failure of the flooring installation. This may result in expensive and lengthy remedial work, including the possibility of a costly ‘rip out’. Visual inspection is insufficient as a surface can appear dry while excess moisture is still present. Once levels have been accurately measured and confirmed, you then need to apply the best Waterproof Surface Membrane available. If the RH measurement is above 75% and up to 92%, F. Ball recommend to use one coat of Stopgap F76 or Stopgap Isolator Membrane. If the RH is above 92%, F. Ball recommend to use Stopgap F77, F78 or Stopgap Isolator

Membrane. (Wood floor installations should be a maximum of 65% RH, consult the wood floor manufacturer) The treatment of subfloor moisture problems is very serious to consider before beginning any major flooring project. For further information on the complete F. Ball range of Waterproof Surface Membranes, moisture control and moisture measurement please visit the F. Ball website www.f-ball.co.uk or tweet us on the dedicated Twitter support profile @ASKFBall

Eminox STEM Ambassador Supports Budding Engineers Tuxford Academy’s ‘Team Fast4ward’, supported by a STEM* Ambassador from Eminox Limited, the Gainsborough-based manufacturer of exhaust after-treatment systems for heavy duty vehicles, made it through to the national final of The Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge – a global competition for young people aged 11 – 19 years old. * (STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Team Fast4Ward (Joe Limby, Eathan Oakley, Jacob Vernon, Philip Brackenridge and Jac Warriner) qualified for this prestigious event by winning the ‘Best Rookie’ and ‘Best Track Performance’ categories at regional competitions. During the regional finals, the team was given the chassis of a radio-controlled 4x4 and had to improve its performance. The team added a body, sensors which detected the angle of the vehicle, and light-detecting sensors which powered the headlights when it became dark. One of the requirements of the regional competitions was that the team generate sponsorship in order to cover the costs of competing, which they did by contacting local companies.

t34t

Eminox sponsored Team Fast4ward to attend The Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge National Final and provided team baseball caps. The students were also encouraged to design a stainless steel stand to exhibit their vehicle and they visited the Eminox site in Gainsborough to see how it was manufactured. For the national finals, the five Year 10 GCSE Engineering students designed and built a radiocontrolled 4x4 vehicle that could negotiate a speciallydesigned test track. Team Fast4ward competed against 26 other schools from around the UK, performing extremely well in all areas and were praised by the judges for their professional image and knowledge of engineering. Mr Dave Birchall, Engineering teacher at Tuxford Academy, said: “Team Fast4ward performed incredibly well and was a credit to Tuxford. To have made it to the national finals is an incredible achievement and I am very proud of their efforts. Competitions like these give students a fantastic opportunity to engage with employers, whilst making links between their subject and potential careers to the engineered world around them. We look forward to competing again next year and aim to become the UK National Champions. Team Fast4ward would like to thank their sponsors for their support and generous donations.” Ken Hayhurst, Training Manager at the Hexadex Group of companies, said: “We have been extremely impressed with the dedication, enthusiasm and sheer hard work from Team Fast4ward and we hope that their success in this competition inspires at them to pursue a career in engineering.” Ken added: “From the initial talk with students on the job opportunities, through to witnessing a team working on a live challenge and attending a national final, Eminox has drawn so many positives from supporting students who are interested in STEM subjects. Collaboration with Tuxford Academy has continued with a group of Year 12 students studying engineering. Eminox presented a case study on automation for the students to study and develop solutions as part of their Computer Aided Manufacturing course. The reports will be reviewed by Eminox and the best proposal will be awarded an Eminox Engineering Scholarship to help with further studies. Eminox STEM Ambassadors convey their enthusiasm and experience to encourage students in local schools to study STEM subjects. The Eminox team also supports teachers in the classroom with practical demonstrations showing how engineering can solve everyday problems.

Fixed Flushglaze rooflight for private property in North London Situated in a prestigious London location, this Edwardian terraced house incorporates Glazing Vision’s Flushglaze fixed roof light for the requirement of natural lighting.

Expanding interior space to enhance the property’s location Although the property’s location was desirable, with nearby transport links and a ten minute walk to impressive parkland, the interior space fell short of expectations. The clients were looking for ways to expand usable living space, which would not only enable the family to spend

t38t

more quality time together but would also enhance the views of the scenic landscape beyond the garden. To meet these objectives, Andrew Mulroy Architects Ltd focused on designing a large kitchen extension to the rear of the property that would help to accentuate this landscape and create an open, interior space for the family. This would create a focal point for the home where both children and adults can congregate and socialise.

Doors, windows & architectural hardware Integration of fixed roof lights for natural lighting The ground floor plan, which was originally segregated into three rooms, a small breakfast room, a smaller kitchen and a tight living room, were replaced with a large kitchen diner that extends outwards into the garden. In order to create an extension that provided sufficient lighting as well as space, a large skylight was incorporated into the design plan. Glazing Vision supplied their fixed Flushglaze rooflight for the requirement of natural lighting; this large, single pane of toughened, triple-laminated glass was installed above the dining area. The installation of Glazing Vision’s product enabled daylight to penetrate the heart of the extension that would have otherwise been relatively dark; the rooflight not only enables great views of the sky during the day but is also an admirable feature at night, with an open snug room positioned to the side of the skylight around a wood burning stove. Glazing Vision’s product, together with the full width sliding glass doors onto the garden, help to maximize the amount of natural daylight that now floods the new living space. The flawless finish of the Flushglaze skylight, with its minimal framework and large area of sheer glass, complement the white-washed décor of the extension perfectly; the combination of minimal colour and seamless glass has created a floor-to-ceiling mergence of garden and sky. Achievements from the project Andrew Mulroy Architects carefully considered the owner’s requirements for light and space throughout the project and have created an extension that has created a special family environment for all occupants. What is particularly impressive about this project is how the original period character has been carefully integrated with a more contemporary style of living; the building’s traditional charm blends with the minimalist features of the kitchen extension. This North London property carries with it an air of understated elegance. To find out more about design considerations for your project, please call our technical department on 01379 353 741 or request a CPD.

The Telguard range of telephone, GSM, and soon to be released, SIP based intercom systems are suitable for new build or retro fit. Designed, developed and manufactured in the UK since 1992 we have provided entry solutions for thousands of projects nationally and overseas. The telephone based system plugs in to a standard analogue telephone socket or phone system extension and the GSM system requires a SIM card. The SIP product requires a Broadband connection and a link to the LAN or local Wi-Fi. The only other requirement is for local power and the intercom can be installed. Installation is not disruptive as the installation takes place at the entrance to be controlled and there is no need to put handsets into flats or houses as they are already in place – their own telephone or mobile. The telephone numbers of the apartments/ houses/businesses are programmed into the intercom system with any access codes required and the system is ready for use. A visitor enters the flat or house number into the intercom via the keypad and then presses the ‘CALL’ button. The receiver of the call picks the telephone and can speak to the visitor and allow access by pressing a digit on their telephone keypad. This sends a signal to the intercom that activates the door lock or entrance gate and the visitor is able to gain access. If the receiver of the call does not want to grant access they simply put their phone down to end the call. If the resident is out, the system is able to divert the call to up to 8 follow on numbers. This could be to a mobile phone or even a Call Centre where access may be granted from. Telguard benefits from an internal battery backed time clock which enables timed access PINs, timed number divert, disable the system to prevent unsociable calls, timed trade access via a ‘Trade’ button or PIN and a number of other timed features. This facility also updates from BST to GMT as required, again removing the need for a site visit. Any alterations required to telephone numbers or PIN codes can be actioned by the system installer and can be carried out remotely reducing the need for on-site attendance.

t42t

The Activity Logs provide a record of every function that the system performs backed up with accurate time and date information. The Logs also provide a ‘Dashboard’ to the installer providing operational information ie. Voltage, temperature. The Telguard system is not only quick to install compared with hard-wired systems but also extremely flexible. Calls can be answered on cordless telephones making it possible for users to answer entrance requests while going about day to day business or it is possible for a mobile phone to be called for access requests. We are able to provide systems with backlit keypads and buttons, integrated proximity access and video. The video picture can go to a dedicated monitor or into the communal TV aerial for viewing on any television in the premise. DDA systems are available with large halo illuminated Braille buttons with big letter, easy to read displays and audio and visual call progress indication. Bespoke applications are also undertaken making it possible to provide almost any style or shape of system. It may be that we have to provide a system to replace an existing installation so we are able to manufacture our panel to fit the aperture of an old, non functional system. We are able to manufacture systems in different finishes and colour schemes, we powder coat stainless steel so as to not impact on the vandal resistance of the panel.. As advances in technology arrive in to the public domain, we are always in a prime position to make the most of these advances thanks to our in-house development team. We are also able to engineer modifications to software and hardware should a specific requirement be requested. Our systems carry a 2 year return to manufacturer warranty which can also be extended.

Bituchem’s specialist hard-landscaping products have proved a popular choice across the education sector with numerous applications in both schools and universities being completed. The company has worked for instance with Reading University and Hertfordshire University, as well as a number of primary schools across the country to provide an attractive and maintenance-free landscape solution using its flagship Natratex and Colourtex materials. Bituchem’s Natratex buff coloured material has appeared to be the most popular choice amongst school and university redevelopments due to its modern aesthetics which complement the colours of Cotswold stone, which is being used more often for new buildings. The vivid colour allows architects and specifiers to create a striking landscape that is more aesthetically pleasing than standard black tarmac, with the same durable qualities, whether it is a brand new playground, pathway or staff car park. Natratex is created sing natural coloured

aggregates, compacted using a specially formulated clear resin binder to ensure that the appearance and quality does not fade from constant use or damaging weather conditions. This compact structure of the material offers a smooth finish that is resistant to cracks or potholes caused by loose aggregates for a safer surface for young children that is also kinder to knees! The strong resistance and durable qualities also prevent the material from needing regular maintenance which could cause lengthy disruptions to a playground or campus. The company’s Colourtex material has also grown in popularity due to its many options of vibrant colours. The material is particularly useful for primary school playgrounds which offer Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGA) or require a bright and fun landscape for children.

SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES USE BITUCHEM FOR BETTER LANDSCAPES

Available in red, green, blue and buff, Colourtex can be used to create all or part of a scheme for a vivid finish that will not fade. The material can be used to highlight sports pitches, designated games or age-group areas or simply a creative imagery without the need for additional paint or marking equipment. This will significantly reduce the overall cost and time of the project as the entire landscape can be completed in one application without the need for separate demarcation painting. Like Natratex, the colourful aggregates used to create Colourtex are bound using a clear resin binder to ensure longevity of colour and performance, whilst also being safe for use in playgrounds or other areas used by young children. For schools or universities that have experienced frequent flooding or minor water build-up, Bituchem has developed Natratex to offer a porous alternative. Natratex Porous replicate the natural infiltration method of water and steadily absorbs all excess water through the surface of the material and into the ground, before finding its way to the natural water course. This sustainable method of drainage eliminates the need for conventional pipe systems and all maintenance and issues associated with them. Bituchem takes into consideration the time and budget restraints that are associated with developments in schools and universities and has ensured that Natratex and Colourtex can meet all requirements. The lowcost materials are extremely easy to apply and do not require on-site mixing or gluing, and can be laid using traditional equipment which will help to reduce the overall time of the project. The company’s design team works closely with its customers to identify the requirements of each application, tailoring the material to meet the specification and desired finish of the project. Further information is available from Bituchem on 01594 826768 or 07584 311266, by emailing: mark@bituchem.com or by visiting the company’s website at www.bituchem.com

Antarctica Corian® transforms historic Manchester office Bluesky Design Interiors have transformed a former canalside warehouse into an exciting and dynamic workspace for Well Pharmacy in Manchester. Combining the listed building's original features and character with contemporary styling, the team created a bespoke reception centrepiece in Antarctica Corian® from CDUK. Fabricated by Production TM Ltd, the 14m² desk was complemented by a matching waiting bench in the landlord's lobby. The design concept is based on the building’s location. The shape of the desks reflects the ripples in the canal water, creating a simple desk that has an organic form. Angles with softened corners were added to graduate between the desk height and counter height sections of the desk and a similar detail followed in the lobby desk graduating from desk height to seating height. The sleek lines of the desk contrast with the textured timber and exposed walls of the building’s interior. t56t

Lift your interior design or outside space with living plants

With a collection of mature and unusual trees and plants you won’t find in garden centres, Plaza Plants offers a range of European and a range of exotic architectural plants to give you the perfect tree for your interior or exterior space. One of the European range is the beautiful orchard olive (Olea europea) on show in the Arnolfini Café in Bristol. The Arnolfini made it to the shortlist in the prestigious 2016 ‘Museum of the Year’ awards, which awards exceptional imagination, innovation and achievement in the arts. Standing at 8 feet tall including the pot, the evergreen tree complements the café’s high ceilings and adds an extra dimension to the café bar’s chic surroundings, popular with Bristol’s art lovers and foodies. Café manager, Jenny Bongard, said, “Just wanted to say a massive THANK YOU for the safe delivery of the tree this week, it arrived just in time for our visit from the judges of Museum of the Year and has certainly made an impact!” One of Plaza Plants’ extensive range of big plants, the orchard olive is available at £699 for one, or £998 for a pair. The ‘Exotics’ range includes skyduster palms (Washingtonia robusta), chusan palms (Trachycarpus fortunei), spineless yucca (Yucca elephantipes), and sago palms (Cycas revoluta) and a stunning oversized cactus at 3 foot wide by 3 foot tall. Steve Wilkinson, director of Blink Giant Media chose two skyduster palms for his office, he said, “We specialise in giant graphic projects and wanted some plants for our Bristol office that would really impress. Plaza Plants specialises in big, impressive plants and we chose two skyduster palms from them. They really enhance the office, give it a ‘wow’ factor – and require very little looking after.” The skyduster palms are available in two sizes, with the smaller size (5ft 5in) at £598 for a pair, and the larger size (7ft) at £798 for a pair, or £499 for one.

Nebula “HPWM” is an innovative, best value, fire protection solution designed to allow open plan layouts to comply with current UK building regulations (BS 8458:2015). Building and housing regulations have traditionally encouraged the creation of fire resistant compartments in homes as to limit the spread of fire, an approach that consumers find increasingly frustrating as they seek open, light spaces to live in. Today however, LACoRS guide, approved Document B, British Standard_8458 and the Scottish Building Regulations all recognise the need for flexibility of layout and all allow open-plan designs as long as some additional features, including fire suppression, are provided. For architects and developers, Nebula “HPWM” allows the modern, open-plan layouts that clients increasingly expect to comply with Building Regulations. For landlords, Nebula “HPWM” can create a safe escape route in an existing open plan house or flat with no impact on rentable space.

Lining Systems - The importance of Fabrication Sometimes a spark of clarity will result in a “eureka” or “light bulb” moment and an idea will evolve into a unique product. I don’t know how many people get such moments but it is certainly not uncommon as it is one of the things that makes us Human, our inventiveness! Such was the case many years ago when the idea for the Unifold® hinge was born, only I called it my “beer mat” moment, because at the time I was bending a beer mat and you can probably guess where I was when I was doing it! Since those early days of trials, tests, disappointments and triumphs, Unifold® has become a complete system and this has been achieved through an evolutionary process more by necessity than design, most often encountering a problem on site and returning to the factory and solving it in the workshop, employing fabrication techniques and whatever tests were necessary to prove the solution. Most of the fabricated components which are vital to the Unifold® system were designed in the early years of product development and we had many “light bulb” moments in that process along the way, such as the patented Clip Joint used for difficult and narrow applications.

This first photograph shows part of a fabrication that was probably one of our most complex and certainly one of our largest.

We learned the use of our hinge principle in so many ways to aid the fabrication process and to produce components which would be impossible any other way. From the outset this produced fabricated components fit for purpose and of exemplary quality. We also realised early on that site working inside a gutter cavity could often be very difficult and to expect site operatives to “cut and carve” and then effectively seal a lining system was too much to ask, so our intention was and has been throughout for us to provide all fabrication, factory manufactured with simple gutter joints so the installation is constant and repetitive and as easy as we can make it. We became a “single product company” concentrating on providing product and service excellence.

And this is the complete fabrication in situ, 18 pieces in total! And five gutters entering a single space! Not easy, and not a common occurrence, but if you are going to “set your stall” to line gutters then the ability to cope with such circumstances is elemental and vital.

The system has proven to be entirely versatile with the ability to correctly line almost any existing system whether it is a level gutter or laid to falls. Some of our fabricated components are corners, tees, side boxes, sumps and expansion joints and these are just a few! In fact there are solutions for any circumstances however difficult or complex. For quite some time now we have insisted that anyone who installs Unifold must be trained to install the system. This is to ensure conformity and continuity of the system quality on site.

This is a two piece corner detail with an intruding pier section.

This supports our 25 year comprehensive guarantee that includes the installation as well as quality of materials and manufacture. An industry first in gutter lining applications. It is also without doubt that Unifold® is a technical product which the following photographs clearly demonstrate.

The message is clear, any lining system must be able to cope with whatever the site conditions dictate and if a 25 year guarantee is offered then this must warranty that the system is going to work, without leaking, for that period of time and beyond. Our quality and fabrication expertise means we are content with our promises.

t68t

This photograph shows a sump unit with two coned outlets and demonstrating that each end is a gutter section for ease of installation. Can you imagine attempting the manufacture of this on site?

It takes a long time to create perfection.

Once in a while a product comes along and changes everything, from the way it’s crafted to the way it works. Products are often copied and many are great ideas that never really see true success in their application. Many years are spent searching for a product that will ultimately surpass expectations, stand the test of time and become recognised as the leader in its field. We created one of those successful products nearly two decades ago and still today it has never been equalled. Why? Because we have never compromised on quality.

UNIFOLDÂŽ Unrivalled excellence in gutter lining technology. www.gutterliners.com
