The PerFecT Touch

stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. Originally called “A Touch of Brass”, the firm changed their name in 2003 in reaction to slowly advancing market changes in architectural ironmongery which is no longer supplied solely in brass, and to also reflect the broader range of products and finishes that they sell. In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Whatever finish you require, Touch can help you get the right look. Touch occupy their recently refurbished showroom at 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea, where they display a vast range of their 5,000 products. With a customer base including Interior Designers, Builders and individuals who are interested in the top end of the

Ironmongery market, Touch mainly supply to residential premises but hotel and office properties also contribute to their vast clientele. The company also have a healthy export market to all corners of the world, namely the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods

which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. Touch understand that keeping up with the fashion-shifts is imperative in order to provide every customer with the best solution for their requirements. Ironmongery can be a difficult and complicated aspect of a building project, as a result Touch aim to take this awkward aspect and make it user friendly and clear to understand by offering an onsite service where they carry out a detailed door by door, window by window, room by room Ironmongery schedule, highlighting all requirements and identifying any items that can be refurbished. Schueco sliding doors:

form and function in perfect harmony

he moment you open a Schueco sliding door – whether it’s a straight slide, tilt-and-slide or folding system – you know you’re dealing with quality. The solid feel of the frame and the effortless ease with which it glides open make that instantly clear. Which is what you’d expect from Schueco UK, the British subsidiary of Schüco International KG, one of Germany’s leading specialists in precision-engineered, madeto-measure aluminium products for the home. Years of experience and close attention to design detailing mean that a Schueco system combines quality, form and functionality in a single harmonious whole.

Open up your world with Schueco folding doors Everyone loves being in the open air when the sun shines.

And that’s something you’ll really appreciate on a chilly autumn evening when you realise how the superb insulation of a Schueco sliding door minimises both heat loss and external noise to leave you feeling snug and warm.

And when you install one of Schueco’s folding/ sliding doors – which allow a clear opening of as much as 95% - you can enjoy that sensation inside as well as outside your home, all day long.

And of course you’re also totally secure thanks to the option of a multi-point locking system that provides excellent resistance against intruders.

Which is reinforced by the design options available: you can specify not only the colour (and there are plenty to choose from), but also whether the leaves glide inwards or outwards to stack.

It’s a fabulous, liberating feeling.

Every folding door is thermally insulated with close-fitting, weathertight gaskets to eliminate draughts. Precision-made rollers and a top guide mean that even a door system with multiple leaves is easy to operate. In addition, being highly engineered, a Schueco folding door is exceptionally strong and depend-ably secure despite elegantly slim frames and narrow facewidths. For German engineering made in Britain, there’s only one name.

Rooflights enhance extensive in luxurious London mews Glazing Vision rooflights were used in the re-construction of this mews house situated in the prime real estate and conservation area of Mayfair, London. The building is an exceptional example of stunning architecture and elegant, contemporary interiors. Whilst adding a majestic character to the mews itself with its dark brick façade and impactful balcony, the outer appearance belies the vast size of the residence internally. After the demolition of the former mews house and after 2 years of construction, which had even necessitated underpinning the neighbouring houses, this property now accommodates a basement with indoor pool, lower ground floor with cinema room, open plan living and dining space, 2 floors of bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as additional terraced balconies.

eeping the interiors bright and airy throughout was key to the design concept – floor to ceiling windows and Flushglaze Walk On Rooflights from Glazing Vision were installed to maximise the daylight where it would have been otherwise compromised on the ground and second floors. In addition, a Glazing Vision 3 Wall Box Rooflight provides unimpeded access from an internal staircase to the impressive roof terrace, which is recessed down 1 1/2metres between 2 pitched roofs and which offers a vast outdoor space for entertaining, dining and relaxing. Solution: Two Flushglaze Walk On rooflights were specified by the architect to negate the risk of potential dark spots appearing in the dining zone and living area on the ground floor. Engineered by Glazing Vision to bespoke sizes and to meet the future projected foot traffic upon them, they were seamlessly integrated into the balconied terrace on the second floor, thus shedding light through to the bench seating in the kitchen and lounge. Their minimal internal framework was in keeping with the contemporary aesthetic of the interior, and both rooflights augment the quality and quantity of light entering this open plan area, even extending out towards the central stairwell and landing.

roof terrace house Two further custom-sized Flushglaze Walk On Rooflights installed on the roof terrace add an intricate design detail but also create a wow factor. Perfect for flat roof terraces, these rooflights lie flush with the wooden decking. Again tested to allow for regular foot traffic and to bear the weight of terrace furniture, the rooflights offer complete safety and watertight integrity. On the second floor below, the two windowless bathrooms are flooded with the light coming through these rooflights – indeed such is the brightness of these rooms that privacy blinds have been installed for occasional use. Seeking to optimise the very large roof space that had been created (4m x 8m) the architect specified Glazing Vision’s 3 Wall Box Rooflight, which would offer easy access all year

round to the roof terrace and also provide a contemporary glass feature. For the accommodation of the 3 wall mounted box rooflight a timber box frame had to be built which abutted the exposed brick wall behind. The property’s imposing central staircase provides access to the box rooflight, which in turn maximises the light falling down the stairwell to the bottom of the house. At a touch of a button from an access keypad, the sliding roof retracts to give a 50% clear opening with no “bowing of the head” necessary. The operation is quiet and safe, and the provision of a rain sensor ensures closure from inclement weather. CRL shines the spotlight on an eco-timber house in Aberdeenshire AN ENERGY efficient, eco timber house in Aberdeenshire has been crowned as a winner of a campaign that shines the spotlight on self-builders.

is delighted to announce that “Heartwood” in Aboyne is one of three winners selected to take part in its Venturous Builds campaign – an inspiring new web series that is showcasing Britain’s inspiring self-builders and their construction achievements.

The stunning three-bedroom home is insulated using recycled newspaper and recycled glass. With 216 m² of living space, there is also a double height dining room from which you can see the vaulted timber ceiling, with views over the beautiful rolling hills of Deeside.

Local couple Vic Kirwan, 68, and Teresa Green, 66, have been selected by the structural defects insurance specialist as being truly venturous of spirit.

Vic, who lives in Aboyne, said: “It was always our dream to build a timber home that was highly energy efficient. Construction is almost complete and we look forward to moving into our new home. Thank you to CRL for recognising how unique and energy efficient Heartwood is.”

Vic, a retired broadcast engineer, and Teresa, a dental receptionist, commissioned Stommel Haus, a German manufacturer of timber houses, to develop a custom built, energy efficient eco timber house. The campaign, which saw CRL launch its logo into space, aimed to inspire those who have dared to be venturous, brave and unorthodox to share the details of their venturous builds. Winners have had their project filmed and featured on the online show. The third episode of Venturous Builds is now live on the CRL YouTube channel “Heartwood” was built only using untreated Arctic Heartwood Spruce from FSC certified forests in Finland.

The house is heated using a heat pump and ground-breaking technology “Heating with Ice”, which uses ambient heat and solar thermic energy.

Barbara Fischer-Clark, of Stommel Haus, said: “Heartwood is a fantastic bespoke home and we are delighted to be named as one of the Venturous Build winners. What sets this property apart is the owners ecocommitment, Vic and Teresa have used ground-breaking technology to ensure it achieves the highest in energy efficiency, while working with a German partner to deliver the home of their dreams.” Filming is now complete on these unique projects. All three episode of Venturous Builds are now live. The Venturous Builds web series is hosted by English designer and regeneration expert Wayne Hemingway.

CRL CEO Steve Mansour said: “We’ve been blown away by the quality of all of the entries we’ve received for our Venturous Builds campaign. You’ve proved that the UK has some truly venturous self-builders and developers. Thank you to everyone who entered.

“However, we were looking for the one-offs, the inspiring, the ingenious construction projects to feature in our Venturous Builds web series. Vic and Teresa clearly demonstrate that they have the courage, determination and an unwavering belief in their ability to create something truly unique.

“Venturous builds celebrates the pioneering self-builders who, against the odds, have dared to dream big and have created the homes of their dreams.” Commenting on the winners, Wayne Hemingway said: “My wife and I designed and built our own home 19 years ago when our kids were young and it has been a true life enhancing experience ever since.

“Designing and building your own home is about getting something you really want, rather than getting a house someone else has designed or settling for what’s on the market. Vic and Teresa clearly knew what

they wanted when it came to their home and they clearly are revelling in the results. “Venturous Builds celebrates fantastic self-built homes and shows it’s about the spirit of getting on and doing it. It is truly inspiring to witness the people and the love of what they have achieved at the end of the process.” CRL does not shy away from arranging insurance for unusual projects, including new builds, complete or partially completed builds, timber frame constructions, prefabricated properties, mixed-use projects,

conversions and insolvent properties. The construction insurance experts recognise that every opportunity is different. With CRL there is no set criteria – just an appetite for adventure. For more information about CRL please: •

THE CLEAR ADVANTAGES OF OSMO UV-PROTECTION-OIL smo UK, the ecofriendly wood and finishes specialist, has developed a quality finish to protect, maintain and restore exterior wood. Osmo UV-Protection-Oil has been specially designed to preserve the natural colour of the wood, leaving it looking in top condition throughout summer months.

Protection of exterior wood is of the upmost importance as the colour can fade after harmful UV rays damage the lignin within the wood. Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is a clear, satin finish for exterior application onto vertical wooden structures only such as doors, cladding, fencing etc. Based on natural oil, it does not crack, flake, peel or blister. This natural protective finish has been produced to resist the greying effect on exterior wood due to exposure to the sun, maintaining the wood’s natural aesthetics. The UV-Protection-Oil 410 consists of natural ingredients and is safe for use on children’s play equipment,

flower boxes as well as animal housing, whilst UV-Protection Oil Extra 420 contains additional active-ingredients perfectly blended in order to reduce algae and fungal decay and provide optimal protection during winter periods. For horizontal/flat surfaces, including decking, tables and benches, a pigmented finish is required to protect against the wood’s natural greying process. It is advised to select a mid-dark colour tone for stronger UV-protection. Alternatively, choose a colour that is as close as possible to the natural wood’s colour, to preserve the natural appearance. Both Osmo Decking-Oil and Natural Oil Woodstain product ranges offer a wide selection of colours. The Natural Oil Woodstain range can be expertly mixed to any RAL/NCS colour, resulting in over 2,000 options. The transparent nature of the finish allows the natural characteristics and aesthetics of the wood to remain visible, maintaining the natural feel and story of the wood itself.

Collecting, Grading, Promoting and Selling Great British Fleece Wool Since 1950 We established a farmer run organisation in 1950

We collect, grade, sell and promote fleece wool

We are a non-profit making organisation

Operations are carried out across the UK and We receive no financial support. Ireland

British Wool operates a central marketing system for UK fleece wool using a fully computerised auction system, with the aim of achieving the best possible net return for producers (farmers).

We are the only organisation in the world that collects, grades, sells and promotes fleece wool. We are also the only remaining agricultural commodity board in the UK.

We operate commercially, but we are also a non-profit making organisation, returning to producers the market price for their wool.

Day to day operations are run from our headquarters in Bradford. We also have smaller regional offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

British Wool welcomes enquiries from individual producers, or producer groups, who are interested in visiting Wool House. British Wool staff value the opportunity of meeting producers in Bradford and visitors usually find it interesting to learn more about Brtish Wool’s operation. Where possible visits are arranged to co-incide with an auction and also include a visit to see some processing. For further information, please contact your Board Member, Regional Manager or British Wool’s Head Office.

BRIO PUTS A CURVE IN IT Brio architectural hardware made an adventurous curved door project a reality for an innovative wedding venue in north Devon.

unnels Beaches is a network of hand carved tunnels leading to sheltered beaches and a tidal Victorian bathing pool at Ilfracombe, the location of a breath-taking beach front wedding

venue operated by Devon Beach Weddings. The bespoke building curving out of the rock means there are no concerns about the UK weather and whatever turn it takes it is all visible through curved bi-folding glazed doors – whether opened or closed.

The owner had the idea to refurbish and at the same time to extend the upper story of the curved building by 2 metres, installing curved bi-folding glazed doors and thereby increasing capacity from 130 guests to 160. With a full house for weddings in 2017, (120+ weddings booked), over 100 weddings already booked for 2018 and prime dates in 2019 booking fast, the extension was a must. Awlwood Joinery already had a good relationship with the owners Jamie and Zoe McLintock having worked with them at the Tunnels Beaches Bath House – an old Victorian bath house – which was turned in to wedding accommodation for the venues guests, so when the scheme was mooted to install curving bi-folding doors the McLintock’s turned to David Wray at Awlwood Joinery.

by Brio’s 288 Lever Furniture to give joiners a deluxe option to offer their customers who now, more than ever, are looking for aesthetics as well as practicality. Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock is suitable for Brio’s tough exterior folding system Weatherfold 4s with timber or aluminium panels and for single hinge panels, such as French doors, up to 3.5 metres high, offering an alternative to the standard flushbolts. It is both ultra secure and aesthetically pleasing.

“It wasn’t anything we had done before but we are skilled guys and the concept is not beyond the reach of man – after all we can send men to the moon – so we undertook the commission. The architect, RGP of Barnstaple, came up with a scheme and we did as they instructed – but with fewer doors (two sets, opening out). The design included wood cladding and lots of steel. “We opted for the Brio Weatherfold 4s system after talking to Bob Harrison at Hebden & Holding architectural ironmonger and the Brio team which takes panels up to 1 metre wide. The decision was led by the architect’ plans and the constraints of the timber as you cannot have huge pieces of curved timber so we had to make up the doors from smaller

pieces that would eventually be bolted together on site. The actual frame was put together by the owner’s site carpenters.” David Wray says: “I am very pleased with the results especially with Brio’s new dual point locking mechanism. Most bi-folding doors are locked top and bottom which means reaching up and bending down to operate. The new Brio system is a finger locking mechanism. I am so impressed with it I am using it on all jobs. It may be more expensive but it is well worth the investment for the huge improvement and simplified operation and it looks so much better. Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock system launched last year has been joined

Rather than having the standard flushbolt at the top and the bottom of the door system on the inside of the property the end user can now choose a more sophisticated finish with the 288 lever handle readily accessible in the central part of the door so there is no reaching up or bending down to operate bolts. “I am also impressed with Brio R&D – they are always coming up with new ideas and fixes. Best on the market. The solutions are effective and the Brio representatives are helpful and thoughtful – that’s a one-off!” According to David Newton, General Manager UK at Brio, the demand for bi-folding and sliding exterior and interior doors is set to continue apace, with a variety of aesthetic demands from delicate ‘floating’ glass systems to commercial style projects such as this example in North Devon. “What this means in practice is that Brio, with its range of product and flexible attitude, will continue to keep pace with the architect’s need for innovative product that can transform anything they design on paper into reality,” he says. New Blowerproof Liquid set to transform air-tightness of buildings Airtightness is a dominant factor affecting a building’s energy performance. It can be argued that airtightness is more important than insulation in terms of thermal performance. Even small gaps in doors and windows can cause significant heat loss and once a building is constructed, stemming unwanted air flow can prove difficult and expensive. When deciding how to seal construction gaps, one common option is to use a polyurethane-based, spray foam filler or silicone or acrylic sealant to ensure air-tightness, but there are acknowledged problems, with shrinkage and adhesion being the main disadvantages.

easily and effectively an applicator can achieve a permanently secure and continuous seal. Blowerproof helps deliver energy performance well beyond building regulations.

Blowerproof has recently been awarded BBA (British Board of Agrément) Certificate 17/5410. Jack A new, BBA-certified, liquid air-tight Georgiou, project manager at BBA, membrane called Blowerproof is a says: “Blowerproof was subjected to clever, quick, easy and cost-effective a rigorous assessment by the BBA. way to ensure outstanding air-tightness. Blowerproof is also available in white, so it doesn’t show through a plaster finish. Brushes rinse out under cold water, making Blowerproof Liquid Brush quick to deploy and pack away. It’s safe to use in high risk environments such as food, childcare and medical environments as it is free from both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and harmful chemicals. A building that leaks air is always thermally inefficient. These air leaks cost the building owner, so it’s easy to make the case for using Blowerproof. It quickly justifies both its product and labour costs. An easy way to ensure leaks are sealed, helping limit applicator error is a major step forward to improving building performance. Blowerproof can’t be beaten for how quickly,

throughout the construction industry as confirmation that a product is fit for purpose. Only products and systems that have passed a series of comprehensive assessments – including laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and inspection of production are awarded a BBA Certificate. Once a Certificate has been issued, six monthly surveillance of production and comprehensive three yearly reviews are required to maintain its validity.

In addition to the BBA, Blowerproof has Certification from a wide range of recognised European bodies, a full list can be found on the Blowerproof website. Blowerproof is also available as a roller application which can be used directly on blockwork, brick, masonry and as a spray which is ideal for larger areas such as walls and roofs. It can be directly applied to mineral wool, sprayed set foams or PIR insulation. For further information, or to purchase Blowerproof in the UK, please visit:

ancashire-based greenhouse and glasshouse manufacturer Hartley Botanic has been making its handmade, made-to-order garden structures for over 79 years. The manufacturer is the Royal Horticultural Society’s recommended greenhouse and glasshouse supplier and is the brand of choice for the UK’s leading horticultural institutions and designers with ‘Hartleys’ commissioned by the National Trust, Hampton Court and Kew…to name a few. Many of Hartley Botanic’s clients see their beautiful greenhouses and glasshouses, not just as an indispensable gardening tool, but as a way to add architectural presence and definition to their properties. Here are three inspirational ideas for using a greenhouse as part of an overall home design scheme.

1. Add drama and grandeur to a property With its impressive architectural look a greenhouse or glasshouse can contribute additional drama to an existing property. This is especially the case when choosing a larger glasshouse or those with ornate period features such as cresting and roof finials. This bespoke glasshouse beautifully lends itself to the already imposing façade of this Georgian house in Leicestershire, adding presence and interest. The glasshouse gives the visual

NOT JUST FOR THE GREENFINGERED HOW A GREENHOUSE CAN ADD SERIOUS AESTHETIC VALUE TO A PROPERTY illusion of extending the property, and for the homeowner, provides a convenient allseason section of their garden accessible through a downstairs room.

2. Use as a picturesque extension Attaching a greenhouse to a property effectively adds an ‘indoor garden’ extension creating real visual interest around a home. Take this Hartley Botanic Paxton Abutting greenhouse in Verona Stone. The greenhouse’s colour and design means it works as a seamless and unusual addition to the property’s silhouette. The gable roof and intricate glass panes of the greenhouse adds a new, tangible prettiness to the property and gives the illusion of increased overall size.

3. Extend your architectural vision into the garden Commissioning a bespoke greenhouse or glasshouse means its design can mirror and reflect a property, or even extend its style and presence into the garden. The contemporary design of this Hartley Opus glasshouse perfectly mirrors the style of the accompanying property, effectively extending its architectural narrative into the garden. This has the effect of unifying both the indoor and outdoor spaces as well as emphasising the overall feel and character of the architect’s original vision. All Hartley Botanic’s greenhouses and glasshouses, whether a Victorian Grand Manor or small lean-to, are handmade to order using the finest materials and representing the highest level of engineering design. The company offers a 30 year ‘lifetime guarantee’ which covers the structure and installation of all its greenhouses, a formal acknowledgement for customers of their longevity. Customers purchasing a Hartley Botanic greenhouse are making an investment which will stand the test of time and be robust enough to travel well. Catalano, an Italian family run company based near Rome, was founded in 1967 in Civita Castellana by a team of expert ceramic technicians. Catalano is a market leader in ceramics, selling its ranges in over 100 countries. Renowned for producing the finest contemporary designs, Catalano’s products are made to the highest standards and the products are hand finished by skilled craftsmen. The company produces ceramic collections, in a wide variety of styles in its technically advanced, 170,000 square metre factory, where its top-of-the-range machines can, at full capacity, produce 1,500 pieces every day. With fifty years’ experience, quality is of the utmost importance, and is built into every stage of the manufacturing process. Catalano also prides itself on its “Think Green” policy which ensures all processes maximise both energy and resource savings. Elements furniture collections complement Catalano ceramics and feature contemporary designs in on-trend finishes. Elements has been created with modern homes in mind and includes a wide selection of basin units, countertops and storage units that can be combined to create the desired bathroom setting. Whether you’re looking for something sleek and simple or prefer an industrial look in the bathroom, the collection has something for all interiors. The new furniture collection also offers

the nanotech finish, Fenix. Fenix is a highly innovative material for furniture production launched in 2014. The Nano Tech particles used in the surface material are so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye, and this technology enables furniture in this finish to offer features not available with normal acrylic surfaces. The Catalano Premium and Star furniture collections are available in on trend Fenix Charcoal and Fenix Stone for subtle elegance and also in the striking Fenix Blue finish for a bold statement. Continuing Catalano’s progression in design, Valchromat is an innovative board material that has a unique homogeneous structure. It combines the natural features of wood mixed with the brightness of colour leaving a very adaptable material for high end furniture manufacturing. The beautiful matt finishes in neutral colour tones are on trend with current design themes and create a sophisticated bathroom look. The Catalano Premium and Star furniture collections are available in the contemporary Grey Crete finish. Storage is often a rarity in bathrooms, however it

is something that should be carefully considered and makes a huge difference. The Elements collections offer an abundance of options that are available to suit all needs, whether it’s child-friendly raised units or stylish drawer units, storage can go beyond freestanding baskets and caddies. Tall storage cupboards will give the illusion of a higher, larger space whilst white sanitaryware and high gloss units will naturally reflect light and can open up the bathroom – a great trick for bathrooms where natural light is limited. Make the most of the space under the basin unit or consider a towel rail on

a wall hung basin to incorporate practicality into a smaller setting. Karen Barcoo, Catalano UK Marketing Supervisor says; “There is a move away from the safety of white in the bathroom as homeowners introduce alternative neutral colours for furniture such as muted greys and taupes and light woodgrains to create a contemporary design statement. Innovative materials with antibacterial properties such as Fenix, are also a great choice for hygiene and beautiful matt finishes.” Stockist Information: 0208 685 6815 /

hower enclosure specialist, Lakes Bathrooms, has launched PureVueHD, an optically superior, low-iron glass that appears entirely clear. This new high quality glass is being offered as standard on shower enclosures, doors and bath screens in both its Classic and Coastline Collection, so no incremental charge will be made for this high-end, ultraclear look.

PureVueHD has minimal iron content, meaning that the glass appears clear, rather than having the green tinge that is visible in standard glass. This is because very high transmission levels, of around 90 per cent, enable as much light as possible to pass through PureVueHD glass, making everything viewed through it appear lighter and brighter. With standard glass the iron content reduces light transmission, which creates the green hue that tints everything viewed through it and is particularly noticeable on the edges of the shower enclosure, door or bath screen. This dramatically clearer glass allows the bathroom’s colour palette to be viewed with untainted accuracy. The difference in colours, sharpness and enhanced clarity that PureVueHD makes in the bathroom is like the vivid quality brought to the living room by high definition TV. Whilst low-iron glass can cost as much as 50 per cent more due to the higher grade of silica that it demands, Lakes Bathrooms is supplying it as standard; without adding to its prices. So this visual luxury is now part of all products in its Classic and Coastline collections (excluding only the Mirror range).

Lakes Bathrooms launches ultra-clear PureVueHD glass without charge

The choice of PureVueHD products includes shower enclosures, shower doors and bath screens, with over 40 styles. The latest walk-in ranges are included, plus heavier thickness glass, which shows even more strongly the contrast between standard ‘green’ and this new ultra-clear glass. PureVueHD products start from £145.00 plus VAT and are detailed in the latest catalogue from Lakes Bathrooms. For more information or to find the nearest stockist visit

Green is so last year

Standard glass has a green tinge

PureVueHD glass is optically superior and ultra-clear

Standard glass always has a green tinge that’s particularly apparent when you view the edge of the glass. PureVueHD by comparison is dramatically clearer. Its reduced iron content reduces the greenish hue to zero levels, so the glass almost disappears and the natural beauty of anything seen through it truly shines. From anybody else this dramatic advance would carry a significant premium. From Lakes Bathrooms, where superior comes as standard, this extra clarity comes with no extra cost. Your local Lakes representative will be pleased to show you a side by side comparison and explain more about the brilliance and immediate availability of PureVueHD enclosures, walk-ins and bath screens.

59mm S-Series Minimax super low-level floor gully Purus launch their brand new floor gully with a total height of just 59mm for both vinyl and tiled floor finishes

Purus, the Swedish manufacturer of floor gullies, is extremely proud to be launching their brand new product – the 59mm Minimax S-Series floor gully for both vinyl and tiled floor finishes.

Total floor drain height of just 59mm! Due to a change in screed depth requirements across the construction industry, Purus have taken the same successful technology as their Minimax 50 and made the gully even shallower: the S-Series gully has a total height of just 59mm including the combined water and mechanical NOOD trap, allowing it to fit into even shallower concrete slabs. With careful planning from the architect, the contractor can now avoid the problematic situation of having to install a vertical outlet floor gully through the slab, and can instead use the brand new 59mm S-Series floor gully from Purus. Stainless steel grates for vinyl and tiled floors are available.

The bathroom accessories specialist is so confident that their formula can prevent the tell-tale orange tinge that it has placed a lifetime guarantee on some of its wire ware storage. “Rust can ruin an otherwise spotless bathroom where high levels of humidity often take their toll on traditional wire storage,” says Product and Procurement Director Peter Pegden. “Our rust free wire ware products are suitable for use within any ‘wet’ shower area or bathroom, giving consumers a real confidence and reliability in the product”. Croydex has added the rust free formula to products in six of its wire ware ranges. All come with a five year, ten year or lifetime guarantee. Both the slimline and standard new chrome plated aluminum accessories come with a lifetime rust free guarantee, with products ranging from soap dishes to shower caddies and singular baskets to tiered baskets. Consumers choosing products from the smart stainless steel range gain the peace of mind of a ten year guarantee, whilst those in the popular Stick ’N’ Lock Plus, Mild Steel and Flexi Fix ranges offer five years of rust free use. Flexi Fix products can be securely fitted using a unique X plate which can align with previously drilled holes or new ones. There is also a glue-fix option that means no drilling is required. Growth of manufacturer recognised at national design impact awards Sealant and adhesive manufacturer Polyseam has achieved the ultimate design accolade for the rebrand of its GRAFT product range. The Yorkshire-headquartered company and its branding agency The Engine Room were both presented with a gold design impact trophy at the glittering DBA Design Effectiveness Awards in London. But the GRAFT project also went on to scoop the ultimate recognition of the evening when it was announced as the Grand Prix winner of winners at the end of the night. Since GRAFT’s launch in 2014, annual sales have increased by a staggering 744% and export levels have risen by more than £1million. In fact, this transformational business exercise has played a significant part in Polyseam now building a 50,000sqm factory which is expected to create a further 50 jobs by 2020. It was this bottom line impact that impressed the line-up of high-profile judges, which included Andy Palmer, CEO of

Aston Martin; Josh Berger, president and managing director of Warner Bros; and renowned entrepreneur Deborah Meaden. Commenting on the win, Polyseam’s marketing manager Olando Salina said: “The evolving challenges in the manufacturing market mean we must continually innovate to drive growth. We therefore focused on the development of an environmentally friendly, all-in-one adhesive and sealant created using our own in-house expertise. “This high-performance technology was already award-winning in its own right. But it didn’t achieve the traction we sought, which is why we engaged The Engine Room to help clarify our market position, overhaul the branding of this product range, and craft the communication materials we’d need moving forward. The Engine Room team has specific expertise in this field, and we were therefore delighted

when GRAFT was ‘born’. The project success is a testament to the collaboration of these forward-thinking business and design brains.” The Engine Room’s managing director Lesley Gulliver added: “The building, construction and manufacturing sectors are perhaps not renowned for their design prowess. But this project goes to show that strategic creative thinking is about much more than just what looks good. The overhaul of this product range and the development of the GRAFT brand has helped to revolutionise Polyseam’s entire business.” Polyseam has been independently manufacturing first-class brands for the majority of the world’s leading suppliers since 1993. The company manufactures more than 150 different products, and exports to 21 countries globally.

sustainable building solutions

wned by the same family for generations, the current owner was born in the house and has lived there ever since. While the basic structure of the house – including the roof - was in good condition, the windows were in a state of disrepair. In addition, the southern gable end had been letting in wind-driven rain through failed pointing and, despite having central heating (installed in the 1990s) and insulated attic spaces, the house was not a warm one. The owner’s aims were threefold: to replace the rotten and draughty windows with new; to insulate the walls, and; to improve the appearance of the house by re-introducing the 19th Century symmetry. After choosing timber casement windows to replace the rotten sashes, a number of wall insulation solutions were considered. The owner decided that external insulation would help resolve the aesthetics issue and deal with both the threat of failing pointing and general poor weather-proofing. Houlston Manor is solid-walled and without a damp-proof course and the risk of moisture condensation within the walls was considered to be of paramount

Bringing a 17th cen standards of energ Houlston Manor is an unlisted mainly 17th century box-framed farmhouse, which has been substantially added to and altered over the years. In the early 19th century, the house was also ‘gentrified’ according to the fashion of the day when the timber-framed front wall was replaced with brick to create a unified exterior.

ntury farmhouse to modern gy efficiency and comfort importance. The use of breathable materials, which would allow vapour transfer through the insulating layer, was essential and the Lime Green Warmshell system, which uses wood fibre board as the insulation layer and lime render as a weather-proofer, was judged to fit the bill. The sustainable Warmshell insulation system is flexible and perfect for bringing an old traditionally constructed building up to modern energy efficiency standards. To install the Warmshell system at Houlston Manor, wood-fibre insulation boards were fixed directly to the external brickwork after excavating down around the sides of the house at ground level – a precaution taken as the house had different floor levels internally. The insulation boards were then covered by two coats of lime render – a basecoat (with reinforcing fibreglass mesh) and decorative finishing coat. The eaves were also extended to ensure that the roof had significant overhang over the insulation and renders.

Houlston Manor is now secure, warm and weather-proof for decades to come. In the first three months following the installation of Warmshell (in winter 2015), the property used 2800kWh for heating, compared to 6821 kWh in the exact same period the previous year. This represents an incredible 59% reduction in energy costs! As the original brick walls dry out and warm up over time, the owners expect to see even greater energy cost savings. Houlston Manor is now ‘fit for purpose’ for the 21st century and beyond, a warm, cosy and energy efficient family home that will last for many more generations to come. The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway. As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the

need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or

harsh chemicals enter the unit, try to stick to Eco brands and stagger washing throughout the week.

The HDC1600e is also future-proofed against future regulatory and legislative changes. The renewables-ready low-Nox Infinity HDC 1600e external wall mounted boiler along

with the interior HDC 1600i version) utilises Rinnai’s patented pre-mix burner technology with a 14-1 turn down ratio – the largest on the market – of 58.4kw-4.05kw and is ultra quiet in operation. Integral controls on the units are also a major step forward in achieving best efficiencies whether locally or when integrated into a building management system. Legionella proliferation is also significantly reduced too.

Rinnai has also invented additional ‘SMART’ controls for secondary return DHW systems in the form of an advanced temperature control system which allows for safe running of water at 42°C core temperature during the day and 60°C at a time when the building is closed. By the time the building reopens, core temperature is 42°C for safe use. “The uptake on the whole series of Rinnai’s low-NoX, high efficiency product, across all sectors, has been nothing short of phenomenal,” says Rinnai UK Associate Director Chris Goggin. Rinnai Infinity HDC range offers condensing technology with up to 107% gross efficiency, ultra-low-Nox of less than 20 ppm, a widely expansive modulation range of 54kW-4kW and high flow rates of 37/ltr/min.

FERS ANTEED Add to these benefits the peace of mind of an extended warranty, a top A-rating exceeding the demands of eco-labelling legislation, the flexibility of external wall mounting and delivery to site with all relevant accessories and the knowledge that the HDC1600e is future-proofed against future regulatory and legislative changes and it is easy to see why the Rinnai brand is fast growing in popularity among H&V professionals. How Air Conditioning Works Mitsubishi Electric’s air conditioning systems use heat pump technology to provide heating, cooling and hot water where required. Our heat pumps require only a small amount of electricity to harvest, upgrade and move heat from one location to another. To achieve this a vapour compression cycle is used, which has the ability to move heat from one space to another. Low temperature heat from the environment can be increased to usable temperatures inside the building in the winter, or waste heat from a building can be moved outside in the summer, or even recovered in to hot water. The efficiency of a heat pump is known as the Coefficient of Performance or CoP (or Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) in cooling mode). This is a ratio of the heat delivered to power consumed. The operation of a heat pump is similar to a refrigerator. This process is known as the vapour compression cycle and the following is a more detailed explanation and example of the system delivering heat into a building. Cooling is the same, but the heat is taken from the inside and rejected to the outside.

1. Compression – Refrigerant vapour is raised in pressure and therefore temperature. 2. Condensing – This hot pressurised refrigerant vapour is then passed through a condenser, where it liquefies and gives off useable heat that can be delivered to a building by either air or water. 3. Expansion – Liquid refrigerant is then allowed to expand, which lowers its pressure. 4. Evaporation – The low pressure liquid then expands and absorbs naturally occurring heat from the environment (this can be from the air, water or ground) and in doing so changes back to a vapour, which is then passed to the compressor for the cycle to start again.

Platform Lift for More House School More House School in Farnham is an independent school which has been providing high quality educational and pastoral care for boys aged 8-18 with a range of specific learning difficulties for the past 75 years. Their specialist learning environment allows these children to thrive in a way which has not been possible in a traditional school setting.

They recently invested in a new library and media centre to help support their students with new facilities. Invalifts were contacted by the main contractor, P. A. Sewell Construction Limited to supply and install a suitable platform lift allowing easy access between the upper and ground floors. The MC2000 Platform lift was selected as the perfect solution for this, as the shaft size of just 1250mm wide by 1560mm deep, enabled a fully compliant Part M platform size. The lift also offered glazed doors with key locking to restrict unauthorised usage, and an intercom was fitted as a means of communication in the event of an emergency. •74•

The lift was fitted in just a few days with a minimum of disruption, as the only requirements were a 60mm pit recess, a vertical hole through the floor and a single phase electric supply at the top floor. The school were delighted with their new lift, and look forward to improved access for many years to come. To find out more about the MC2000 platform lift or other products, you can give Invalifts a call on 0845 468 2543 and speak to one of their friendly experts or visit their website at
