CREATING A HIGH-END HOTEL ENSUITE AT HOME

Creating a high-end hotel ensuite at home

enerally, with an ensuite, homeowners can be more daring in their choices. And there’s nothing bolder than an open-plan bathroom which flows into the bedroom with no walls for barriers.

An ensuite bathroom has different functionality and design priorities to that of a master bathroom which is used by the whole family.

Many people initially shy away from open-plan bathroom/bedrooms, fearing that they may leave themselves with little privacy. But in homes where there are plenty of bathrooms, it’s less of a sacrifice to make.

G

And there are plenty of benefits. Helping light from the bathroom to flood into the bedroom – and vice versa – it has an incredibly largening effect. There’s also a lot to be said for its ability to create a hotel-like vibe. That’s what one of Easy Bathrooms’ clients were looking for when they redesigned their ensuite. Approximately 5 sq. m. in size, the bathroom had last been renovated around eight years ago, incorporating a semi-open plan design. With a timber frame separating the bedroom from the bathroom, the room had become

change the positioning of the toilet, to minimise the need for additional pipework, which was placed on the wall next to the bath. The remaining wall had been earmarked for a shower – leaving one question; where would the vanity unit go? Using some creativity, the solution was to build out the wall underneath the sloping roof and the Velux window, creating a flat surface for the vanity unit to sit. This also formed a space for shelving to be added next to the sink.

Choosing the products

aged over time, with dated tiles and furniture – in a layout which didn’t make the most of the space available. So, when opting to renovate the bedroom, they simultaneously decided to upgrade their bathroom, too.

Deciding on a functional and design-led layout The whole room was designed around the placement of the bath. The bath was a priority for the couple, who wanted a freestanding bath to become a central focus of both rooms, flowing equally between the two and sitting

underneath the old galleon windows of the farmhouse. Wanting to minimise the need for cleaning, they chose to prop the bath up against the windows and tile the surround, leaving no gap between the bath and the wall. The rest of the layout was then to be decided – it needed to incorporate a shower, a toilet, radiator and vanity unit. Using Easy Bathrooms’ 3D planner, they went for a slightly unconventional plan. Sitting within the slope of the roof, there were only two useable walls within the room. Understandably, they didn’t want to drastically

The wardrobes in the bedroom were modern, while a traditional fireplace was unearthed beneath the former wardrobes, which they decided to strike as an original feature. The products within the bathroom therefore needed to keep a balance between classic and contemporary, to flow seamlessly into the bedroom. They chose large-format, grey tiles for the floors and walls, to continue the theme of spaciousness. Within the shower area, they went for textured large-format grey tiles, to create a feature wall. They also chose a simple, grey vanity unit, to create a timeless look and finish, which could regularly be updated with fresh, colourful accessories. Finishing off the bathroom, the new false wall surrounding the vanity unit was cladded in an authentic timber, to tie into the wooden beams within the bedroom. The whole space has been completed with modern accessories, including stainless steel candle holders, matte black shower accessories and pink vases – giving it that high-end hotel look they were looking for. This increasingly popular style of bathroom is a new style of living which we think will be seen in more and more homes over the next few years. Rob Holroyd Contracts Manager 07949 051518

Rinnai CPD on continuous flow hot water delivery on demand now fully approved by CIBSE Rinnai’s CPD courses on continuous flow hot water delivery units and systems have now been fully approved by the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers (CIBSE).

Four CPDs have been approved -: • Excellence in Design of Continuous Flow Hot Water Delivery • Continuous Flow Hot Water Appreciation • The Regulatory Horizon for Hot Water Delivery • ACOP L8 “Demand for all of our training courses and programmes have risen steeply as the industry increasingly has to focus on energy, environment and finance efficiency in hot water delivery within a commercial context”, says Rinnai’s Chris Goggin.

•4•

CPD courses have been designed for M&E consultants and specifiers, design and build engineers and, facilities managers. These courses had already attracted praise from CIBSE. For example, it says of the ‘CONTINUOUS FLOW WATER HEATING SYSTEM SIZING AND DESIGN’ course in an appraisal: “The course delivers what it outlines and is well constructed.” Rinnai has developed and manufactures the only complete and most comprehensive range of highly efficient ErP labelled A-rated continuous flow water heaters

on the market, from the smallest domestic model to industrial units. “Rinnai understands that time means money which is why we are happy to adopt an ‘any time, any place, anywhere’ approach to CPD delivery and training,” adds Mr Goggin. For more information visit www.rinnaiuk.com

Industry News xel Schoenert Architects (ASA) renovated an office compound at 54 rue de Londres in Paris (75008). The new complex has been renamed the “Shift” and is home to Spaces’ new Parisian branch of co-working offices. Ideally positioned in the heart of the dynamic district of the Saint-Lazare railway station, the office complex has been restyled and renovated to make it modern, innovative and functional, whilst respecting its urban environment and history.

A

The buildings had been fragmented due to a succession of different architectural and historical sequences. The main challenge was to give the spaces a balanced symmetry and to provide a strong overall identity, especially for the exterior façade on rue de Londres. By creating a sculpted 3D appearance, ASA studio wanted to add value and give new life to the imposing façade on rue de Londres. The idea was to use a geometric patterned cladding resembling Origami. The exterior cladding was developed using Corian®

Corian Exteriors in The Shift ®

Exteriors customized panels based on Corian® Solid Surface in Glacier White. The proportions reflect the balance of an urban layout by Haussmann and give the building a look of solid mineral, vibrating with light. It is the first façade of its kind made in France. The sustainable properties of the ventilated façade provide thick insulation for optimum thermal efficiency and minimum energy cost, in compliance with the new environmental regulations. ASA studio chose Corian® Exteriors panels based on Corian® Solid Surface because of their aesthetic properties, design versatility, durability, and cleanability. The combination of materials (glass, Corian® Solid Surface and wood) perfectly combine with the ergonomic and sustainable essence of the design. Corian® Exteriors solutions are increasingly used for façades due to their resistance to difficult weather conditions, UV rays and good performance in case of fire. Its homogeneous color and unique appearance create unexpected interactions with light.

At Collective Design 2018, he summoned his Russian upbringing with a rotating purple carousel table set against a backdrop of wallpaper depicting the concrete apartment blocks he knew as a child. For a Dallas Contemporary solo exhibition that same year, he assembled a gaggle of rubber tire swans, a nod to Soviet lawn kitsch.

New homelifts will be driven by customer insights The vision for the next generation of homelifts is all about tailoring the product to the individual users’ needs according to the newly-appointed Product Manager at Stiltz Homelifts. John Alimi joins the homelift specialist as the business continues to rapidly expand its research and development team at their West Midlands Head Office. Mr. Alimi, who recently gained a Master’s degree in Industrial Systems, Manufacture and Management from the University of Cambridge, revealed that builders and architects should expect to see future products driven by innovative and customer insights. He explained: “One of my core objectives is for customer insight and human behavior trends to inform the next generation of Stiltz Homelifts. This, together with embracing technology to drive effectiveness and efficiency will mean we continue to provide customers with the best product experience possible.” Mr. Alimi has previously worked in the healthcare, building services and audio technology sectors. He was adamant joining Stiltz Homelifts would be the best move for him as he felt the business was at an exciting development stage with what was already a ‘lifechanging’ product range.

“I was particularly impressed with how Stiltz has spearheaded the development of a fledgling market,” said Mr Alimi. “The rapid growth of a completely new product category such as homelifts within the mobility, or indeed other traditional manufacturing industry, was almost unheard of.

“Stiltz produces a product that people want and felt empowered by, but what also attracted me to the company was the visionary individuals who make up the company’s leadership team. The values and energy of the business resonated with me and I was convinced I had found the right environment to grow with professionally. “The design has evolved significantly since the introduction of the first generation of homelifts. I expect them to continue to improve incrementally in terms design and functionality, becoming increasingly tailored towards meeting and exceeding individual customer needs and expectations in future. It’s a massively exciting time to be involved in the homelift market!” Tel: 0330 222 0334 Email: info@stiltz.co.uk www.stiltz.co.uk

WELL v2 is comprised of ten concepts, including features for thermal comfort in buildings, criteria under which radiant systems, such as Radiana can provide additional thermal comfort benefits: • Thermal zoning: Credits for multiple zones and individual control • Radiant thermal comfort: Credit is given to hydronic radiant heating and/or cooling systems if at least 50% of the project floor area is serviced by this system

Radiana is a hidden climate control system suitable for use in new build or refurbishment projects.

• Humidity control: Credit is given if the mechanical system has the capability of maintaining relative humidity between 30% and 60% at all times. Radiant cooling is a technology used to cool buildings based on heat absorption through cold surfaces. Hot always travels to cold, so Radiana ceiling panels are made cooler than the rest of the room and when activated via an app, cool water passes through the pipes in the Radiana ceiling panels and absorbs heat from the room. This warmer water is then fed into a heat pump, chilled and channelled back around the ceiling until the desired temperature is reached. Radiana environmental consultant David Brunt, explained: “Radiana provides us with a healthy and more sustainable way to cool our buildings. It doesn’t dry out the air, it doesn’t create uncomfortable cold draughts and it has lower running costs than conventional air conditioning. It also provides a consistent temperature right across a room, maintaining this within +/-0.5oC, and the zoning features of Radiana means thermal comfort for all occupants can be effectively controlled.

Radiana is easy to install modular plasterboard system.

“While the benefits of Radiana have been proven through a series of studies, knowing it can now help a building achieve certain thermal comfort features within the internationally-recognised WELL v2 pilot, the case for its installation is gathering momentum.” Radiana can be directly fitted to a ceiling frame and no specialist certification is required for its installation. Radiana provides a full design, specification and after-sales service to ensure the system is fully understood, installed and maintained. www.radiana.co.uk enquiries@radiana.co.uk 01707 649 922

VitrA Tiles launches updated CPD on tile specification VitrA Tiles has launched an updated version of its RIBA-approved CPD presentation on ‘Understanding Designing and Specifying with Tiles’. This presentation in its updated version is bound to be well-received by all architects and specifiers, since it provides a general introduction to the benefits of tiled surfaces, as well as the design considerations which specifiers need to be aware of. •24•

Industry News he CPD covers the types of tiles available, their classification, design considerations and the importance of correct specification. Tiles are being specified on more jobs and for a wider variety of applications than ever before. While this opens up exciting new design possibilities for architects, it does also increase the risk of inappropriate specification. So it is important to understand the advantages, the disadvantages, the relevant standards and the different types of tiles.

T

By considering all these issues in depth, including the differences between ceramic and porcelain tiles, stoneware, vitrified, glazed tiles and mosaics, this CPD presentation will give architects a thorough grounding in the key issues which they should be aware of in the specification of tiling. The specification issues covered include strength considerations, abrasion, slip resistance, safety, sustainability, cost and the latest technologies. Design considerations – aesthetic requirements, colour, shape and modularity – together with installation issues – including method of working and the use of the correct adhesive, are all covered. Being RIBA-approved, this VitrA Tiles CPD counts towards architects’ professional accreditation.

'The new ProColor range from VitrA Tiles'

“The tiling market continues to grow and this CPD presentation will give architects and specifiers a valuable and thorough introduction to the majority of issues around clearer understanding and correct specification of tiles in a wide range of installations,” says Ken Aston, UK & Ireland Sales Manager at VitrA Tiles. All VitrA Tiles CPD seminars can be booked from the website of the RIBA CIPD Providers’ Network at www.ribacpd.com or by contacting VitrA Tiles direct on tiles@vitra.co.uk.

Cabuchon Launches Easy Access Soaking Tub - The Takara

British bath manufacturer Cabuchon Bathforms has launched its sixth-generation deep soaking tub, the Takara. Like the other baths in its deep soaking range, it is inspired by the traditional Japanese ofuro but it includes a host of refinements designed to enhance comfort and to better suit Western bathing habits. It will also accommodate modern technologies such as spa hydrotherapy. that makes it suitable for use with an overhead or wall-mounted shower. On request, it can also be supplied with a bath/shower screen. The Takara can be built into a raised deck or a surround, or set into the floor. It can also be installed freestanding, in which case, Cabuchon can produce bespoke panels on request. Like all Cabuchon baths, the Takara is hand-built by a team of British craftsmen. It carries a 25 year guarantee and it is manufactured using the company’s own Ficore® composite. The material is exceptionally strong and scratchresistant, and it can be manufactured in literally any colour. Cabuchon will match any current (and many past) sanitaryware colours in its standard pricing. For a fee, it can also match the base colour of any tile, paint, stone or textile. The most distinctive feature of the Takara is the addition of grab bars above the armrests. Like all of Cabuchon’s deep soaking tubs, the Takara is easy to enter and exit, but the incorporation of these ergonomically placed bars adds an additional sense of security for those who want it. Cabuchon launched the world’s first modern deep soaking tub - the Imersa - in 1991. Since then, the company has refined and developed the concept with the introduction of five successive designs. The Takara is therefore based on more than 25 years of design experience and customer feedback. The new bath retains many design features that previous customers have valued. In particular, it has an in-built seat with armrests. This holds the bather in a comfortable, well supported, semireclined sitting position that puts no strain on the neck and shoulders.

The Takara has a compact design, with external dimensions of 1372mm by 860mm. This makes it well suited for use in smaller bathrooms, but there is another important reason for its limited size. Placing the side walls closer to the bather’s body makes the bath particularly well suited to the incorporation of a hydrotherapy system. This is because jets set close to muscles and other soft tissue are more effective at delivering heat and a therapeutic massaging action.

The use of Ficore affords additional benefits: it is more rigid than any non-metal or non-stone bath and it possesses superior heat insulation and energy-saving properties. In independent tests, it has been shown to keep water hot more than six times longer than acrylic and more than twelve times longer than vitreous enamelled metal.

The bath is available with the option of a bespoke hydrotherapy system; Cabuchon will tailor the placement of jets according to the needs of the individual user. The Takara is also available with options including an inline water heater, chromotherapy lights and Bluetooth speakers.

More information about the Takara, including specification sheets, can be found on the company’s website - www.cabuchon.com - or by calling 01524 66022.

Soaking tubs are increasingly being chosen for smaller bathrooms, including en-suites. The Takara has therefore been designed with a flat footwell

An article, detailing Cabuchon’s pioneering work in the field of deep soaking tub design, can be found on the Cabuchon website.

MULTI-GENERATIONAL LIVING? DON’T FORGET THE TOILET One issue not generally discussed when talking about multigenerational households is the bathroom- access to, and use of. It’s a growing problem for the households. But it provides potential increase in sales for all involved in the business of bathrooms- architects, builders, plumbers, and retailers. There has been a 46% rise in multigenerational households in less than a decade(1). It is set to continue: some 60% of people would consider living in a multi-generational household. (2) Set alongside that the fact that, on average, we go to the toilet 8 times a day. Multiply that by each resident, and you have a very busy room! But each generation has different needs- children may be young, and not very adept at wiping properly; the senior citizens may (1) Office for National Statistics

equally struggle with wiping, for different reasons- general flexibility, manual dexterity, balance to name a few- but are reticent to ask family to help. The solution is Closomat’s range of wash/dry (shower) WCs. Looking like- and capable of being used as- a conventional WC, the Closomat has integrated douching and drying- the best performance in each on the market. Thus, if preferred, the user does not have to wipe manually. The toilet cleans them instead, to a consistent high standard, every time. Each of Closomat’s range has bespoke benefits depending on the household’s needs.

Industry News Delta Membrane Systems Limited, the UK’s leading Type C cavity drainage membrane manufacturer and supplier of specialist structural waterproofing products is pleased to announce the release of its new Podium Deck Brochure. This 44-page, full colour brochure presents design and build philosophy, project detailing and specification/ selection of the correct waterproofing and drainage protection systems for podium decks, buried roofs, blue roofs, green roofs, warm roofs, cold roofs, hybrid roofs, car parks and terraces & balconies. Successful podium deck and buried roof waterproofing design lies with choosing the most appropriate combinations of structure and waterproofing system to achieve predetermined performance levels and criteria. In order to design out risk of failure due to less than adequate workmanship, damage or defects on site it is also important to consider practicality and ease of installation, the phasing of the construction process and the scope for testing and certifying during construction.

Latest Technology from CT1 TRIBRID® Technology and the introduction of the Ground Breaking BT1 Ultimate Bathroom Sealant and Adhesive CT1 who were and still are the pioneers in the field of sealants and adhesives, were the people that introduced the Hybrid polymer over 15 years ago, which changed the face of sealant and adhesive manufacturing and marketing. CT1 were the first to introduce a multipurpose sealant and adhesive that replaced several products in 1. This was a sealant that was also a heavy duty adhesive could work on wet surfaces and even under water. CT1’s demonstration of the product is legendary, and many competing products have tried and failed to imitate it! CT1, always leading the way in research and development, never sleeps and as a result have yet again brought the latest technology to the building industry. They have now released technology that no one can match. Now introducing TRIBRID® Technology! They have introduced this latest technology in the form of a revolutionary product called BT1. The Ultimate bathroom sealant and adhesive. It’s also the healthiest option. How? The newly launched BT1 combats all fungus and bacteria. It’s scientifically impossible for bacteria/ microbes to survive, making it easier to maintain a more hygienic surface which is free of solvents and isocyanates. It is the ideal sanitaryware product for use in all public health institutions including hospitals and clinics.

•36•

BT1 is the ONLY scientifically developed TRIBRID® Polymer with unique resistance to mould and fungal infestation, therefore creating the healthiest environment. As with CT1 its sister product, BT1 which stands for Bathroom Technology No. 1, also has several accreditations and certificates, making it the healthiest option. Not only that but an ETAG approval for bonding shower panels without mechanical fixings. This makes it the perfect product for installing shower trays, panels, all sanitaryware with no mould or fungal growth. Mould and damp caused by bacteria growth especially in the bathroom leads to respiratory problems. Moulds produce allergens, irritants and sometimes toxic substances. Moulds can also cause asthma attacks. Using BT1 with the latest technology in the industry, can now decrease the risk of these attacks in the home. BT1 is the Healthiest option, it’s the only option! All things bright and breathable Not long ago, most commercially available paints for domestic use were full of nasty chemicals with high VOC content, giving off horrible paint fumes and being generally unpleasant to use.

I

t was considered one of those things that homeowners and decorators had to put up with.

VOC legislation for the UK paint market didn’t truly come into force until around 2010, when it was recognised that the carbon compounds given out by most paints were contributing to global warming and being potentially harmful to health. But, for many years ‘eco paint’ remained a niche market, considered by many to have poor coverage and a limited range of wishy-washy colours. Earthborn’s goal was to create a healthier, more environmentally friendly paint that stood out from the crowd, performing even better than conventional paints. Earthborn’s first product was Claypaint, which maximises the natural properties of clay to create a high performance, highly breathable emulsion that covers

•38•

exceptionally well and gives a distinctive, ultra matt finish. Made from around 35% natural clay with no added VOCs and no smell, it’s thick, creamy, pleasant to use, oil and acrylic free. Perfect for older properties and lime plaster because it is so highly breathable, it is also favoured by those who suffer with allergies, as it is free from harmful emissions and safe for children’s bedrooms and nurseries. But specifying breathable, eco paints needn’t limit the colour palette. Earthborn’s Claypaint is available in 72 shades from soft neutrals to bold, rich tones - and they’ve recently launched seven new shades that meet the current trend for overstated colour. Colin Jones, Earthborn Technical Sales Adviser, says: “Even in historic buildings there’s scope to use contemporary colours.

That’s why we keep our colour palette up to date while continuing to deliver the optimum breathability and environmental performance for which we are well known. “Our new colours give fresh takes on blue, grey, green, coral, burgundy and white. And bespoke colours can be developed through our stockists nationwide.” Earthborn’s silicate masonry paint brings breathability to exterior masonry and the Ecopro emulsion and eggshell for the trade are available in the full range of BS4800 colours. Earthborn’s paints have never and will never contain any added VOCs, and they are proud to be the first UK licence holder for the EU Ecolabel for paints and varnishes. This independent accreditation ensures a very tight control on the ingredients and all paints have to undergo rigorous testing. www.earthbornpaints.co.uk

FLOOR RENOVATION ON A BUDGET Wooden floors are an integral part of the home, an area we use every day, but often neglect. As time passes, wear and tear is inevitable, and floors will begin to look tired and in need of renovation. et with the winter season fast approaching, the desire to brighten up our tired homes is mounting, but the cost of removing an old floor and installing a new one can be extremely high. For customers who are looking for a change, why not suggest refreshing the current surface instead. The smallest flooring touch-up can transform a dull, dark interior into a bright and spacious expanse, eliminating the need to install a new flooring altogether.

Y

•40•

Here, Steve Grimwood, Managing Director of Osmo UK provides a solution by explaining how applying a high-quality finish allows customers to cut costs, transform the existing flooring, and keep it looking its best for many years to come.

Natural beauty For many, the reason for installing wooden floors is for the wood’s beautiful, natural aesthetics. It is a good idea to apply a light

protective finish to highlight the wood’s raw beauty and bring warmth back into the room. The wood’s attractive knots and grain will be accentuated, recreating the classic look many crave whilst also protecting the wood’s surface. This appearance can be achieved by using Osmo Polyx®-Oil Original.

Add a splash of colour Creativity in interior design is getting bigger and bolder. The trend of incorporating

colour into the home has been a key feature to the design market in the past few years. New colours and finishes help keep traditional flooring looking contemporary. Osmo Wood Wax Finish range instantly revives any tired looking room by adding a splash of colour to old outdated flooring. Ideal in any living space, this finish would be great specifically for renovation projects in spaces such as a children’s playroom or bedroom, creating an energetic and playful atmosphere.

Silver lining As well as bright colours, grey and silver continue to be at the top of design trends. Once considered drab and depressing, grey has been resurrected to lofty heights in design. Highly versatile, grey flooring adapts well in both contemporary and classic interiors. Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints Graphite 3074 brings sophistication and glamour to any room, the contrast of grey flooring with different colours on the wall or furniture accentuates the room’s vibrancy bringing the room to life.

Coatings & Paints Protect The distinctive markings and natural characteristics of wood are what make the material so popular. Even when the most natural appearance is desired, it is important to protect the wood to ensure its longevity. As a natural product, wood continues to need nourishment to ensure it stays in the best possible condition, both aesthetically and structurally. For best results, a wax-/oil-based finish, full of natural properties, will not only enhance the wood’s performance, but will also replenish the material’s natural oils to retain the wood’s integrity. Osmo Wood Protector 4006 retains all the natural properties of the wood, keeping it breathable, elastic and attractive, giving added water, dirt and stain resistance allowing you to enjoy your new summer flooring all year round.

Products in Practice Floor maintenance specialist, Conrad Park turned to Osmo UK when renovating and refreshing an existing oak floor in a family kitchen. Thanks to its hardwearing properties and aesthetically pleasing finish, Polyx®-Oil was the ideal choice to rejuvenate the room in the heart of the home.

When the client requested a timeless appearance that would refresh and protect the wooden floor in the kitchen, Conrad Park recognised that two coats of Osmo UK Polyx®Oil Effect Raw 3044 would create the desired result. Preparation of the three-day project began with 60 grit sanding, before abrading with a mesh disc on 120 grit. The floor was then thoroughly vacuumed to remove the residual of dust before applying the finish. Due to Osmo UK finishes being very viscid, and containing both oil and wax, the wood absorbs the finish to provide a smooth surface, resulting in the extra level of sanding not being required. Conrad Park applied the natural finish with an Osmo UK microfibre roller. For the hard to reach areas, including the edges, corners and under the kitchen island, Conrad Park opted for an Osmo UK flat brush. The finish was applied thinly, using just under two 2.2L to achieve the desired look. “Osmo UK is by far my favourite wood finish to use both internally and externally” explains Conrad. “It’s incredibly easy to apply, gives the floor a natural look, protects the surface against spillages, and most important, is easy to maintain.”

Located in Dorking, deep in the Surrey Hills, a once traditional 20th Century house has been skilfully transformed by Lees Munday Architects into a contemporary family home, with an extension to give the property a new lease of life. Juxtaposed against the original building the architects selected Kebony, a global leader in the production of sustainable modified wood, to achieve the owner’s vision for a sustainable and family friendly home. mproving the existing gloomy kitchen positioned on the east side of the house, with no garden access, was a key priority for the architects, who were able to rework the kitchen, dining and daytime seating area to provide an open plan functional living space which embraces the sunny western aspect of the house and takes advantage of the large rear garden and spectacular view. The adjacent lounge was significantly enlarged and continued the Kebony cladding along the rear elevation of the house.

I

For Lees Munday Architects, a relationship with the garden and the landscape was an essential focus throughout the design. As a result two sides of the new extension, and the lounge, were completely glazed to incorporate the garden as part of the interior living space, whilst bespoke sliding doors opening onto a paved patio for alfresco dining and children’s play were also installed. A loft conversion has provided an extra en-suite bedroom, while the master bedroom has gained a full height window and roof terrace, both taking full advantage of the spectacular far reaching views.

•42•

Natural materials and finishes, including stone and timber were selected inside and out for their authenticity and the way they wear in instead of wearing out. Improving the energy efficiency of the house was also paramount for the owner, this was achieved by draught-proofing, enhanced insulation, and the installation of 21 flat black photovoltaic panels on the new kitchen roof.

Successfully integrated with the design rather than an unattractive afterthought, the panels were combined with Kebony wood as a rainscreen system positioned over a mechanically fixed UPVC roof membrane to supply all the hot water for the property. The form of the main extension took its cue from the many agricultural barns in the local area.

David Lees, Lees Munday Architects commented: “For this contemporary extension, we sought a single lightweight material that would be able to clad roofs as well as walls. After an extensive search for newly available ‘modified woods’, we were delighted to select Kebony with the knowledge that we could achieve our vision and leave the wood ‘authentically’ unfinished. We are extremely proud of this project and would thoroughly recommend Kebony as a cladding material, so much so that we have taken several clients to see this house and all have since chosen Kebony to clad their projects.” Adrian Pye, International Sales Director at Kebony added: “We are thrilled that Lees Munday Architects have realised the potential of Kebony to successfully introduce a new character to this building. The natural appearance of the wood perfectly complements the original building’s exterior; Kebony’s resistance to wear and weathering will also ensure the new extensions stands the test of time.”

Lees Munday Architects discovered Kebony and selected the material for the roof and exterior cladding, which proved easy to work with without splintering. Unlike other modified timbers Kebony has an outdoor lifetime guarantee for 30 years. Developed in Norway, Kebony’s revolutionary technology is an environmentally friendly and patented process which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol - an agricultural byproduct. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall, the softwoods permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood including high durability, hardness and dimensional stability. This unique process also provides Kebony with its characteristic appearance, which only grows more beautiful with time.

A husband and wife team have unveiled their self-built home, which features timber cladding made from Accoya® - a worldleading high-performance wood. Rebecca and Damien Leijer, an interior designer and builder respectively, set out to build their own cabin-style home in 2018. Inspired by the emergence of timber cabins in Australian architecture, the couple have now completed their dream property in the seaside town of Torquay, which uses wood both inside and out. Named Felix House, the three-bedroom family home is built on a 405m2 site at the start of the Great Ocean Road. Its large kitchen and living area, which features sliding doors to the garden, is the heart of the property and boasts a timber-lined raked ceiling using western cedarwood. The floor boards, kitchen bench tops and bathroom vanities are made using Victorian ash. Its 6mm grooved shiplap cladding is made of Accoya, a modified timber that can withstand the harshest of climates whilst requiring minimal maintenance. Its superior properties mean that it’s not susceptible to rotting, warping, shrinking or swelling, which allows for a 50-year guarantee above ground. The Accoya was supplied by Britton Timbers.

Homeowner Damien Leijer, who is a carpenter by trade, said: “The dimensional stability, workability and durability of Accoya® can’t be beaten, so this was a major factor in choosing the product, especially given our home’s proximity to the seaside. Aesthetically, it was exactly what we were looking for – we love the grey patina that it develops over time, which will perfectly complement the pink tones of our interior design.” Accoya® is sourced from FSC certified forests and is Certified Cradle to Cradle™ (C2C) Gold in recognition of its sustainability credentials making it an environmentally sound choice.

The beauty of a Schueco sliding door is what you don’t see For instance, you won’t have your view interrupted by intrusive framing because the frames are so slim you hardly notice them. And then there’s the unbeatable insulation (up to Passive House standard) – you won’t see that either, but you’ll feel it. Likewise the excellent soundproofing and the superb watertightness (even with the flush threshold option) and the reassuring rigidity of the doors as they glide effortlessly into place. Goods lift, with a through car

Leading UK health retailer, Holland and Barrett, recently needed a heavy duty goods lift to transport pallets of produce between the two floors of a warehouse. Their main contractor, Prestige Partitioning and Storage Systems LTD consulted with the lift experts at Invalifts to see if they could recommend a solution.

move between the two floors. The

configuration as the ideal solution to lift is supplied complete with a selfsupporting steel shaft, and requires just a 100mm pit and headroom of 2.8 metres. The Cargo Master is manufactured to the requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/ EC, enabling the lift to be installed without the need for a deep pit or an excessive headroom requirement. With a compact footprint of 2100mm x 1800mm, whilst still offering a spacious car size of 1600 x 1500mm, the lift offers maximum space for a minimum footprint. The full width opening of the shutter gates provides a working space of 1375mm wide x 2000mm high clearance. The unit was specified with hardwearing Bolton shutter gates, allowing for the easy movement of goods into and out of the car. The car itself has a collapsible mid bar gate for additional safety and flexibility, as well as single press call and send buttons on the landing. With a full parts and labour warranty for 12 months, and galvanised panels on the lift car and structure, this heavyduty lift will provide access for the warehouse for a long time to come.
