H+H and SIG Offsite collaboration helps meet housing demand In a unique collaboration, H+H UK Ltd and SIG Offsite have worked together to create the SIG I-House – an innovative housebuilding system incorporating Celcon Elements from H+H. The SIG I-House provides all the speed of offsite construction with the familiarity of a traditional build, from foundations to roof in just five days. The system can encompass the inner leaves of external cavity walls, floors, lintel, cavity closers, insulation and roof trusses. With the inclusion of soffit and fascia, the system delivers the internal skin of a property, fully wrapped and ready for follow-on trades. Created at a time when there is a demand to increase the volume of house building and when skilled workers are in short supply, the system is a one stop shop for clients – with a single contractor required to deliver the whole house shell. The system is intended for the construction of domestic houses of up to two storey height, replacing the structure of the inner leaf of external cavity walls, separating walls and internal partitions with storey height Celcon Elements. Installed by the SIG Offsite team, Celcon Elements are craned into place and fixed using H+H element mortar. Timber I-Joist cassette floors are used in conjunction with the system to maintain the speed of build and roofs are either standard truss construction or the ‘Roofspace I-Roof’ – panelised roof system. All components are raised into position by crane. Celcon Elements are manufactured from the same intrinsic material as aircrete blocks and have the same performance advantages including excellent thermal performance with reduced heat loss at thermal bridges.

innai recently supplied a growing High Street gym estate with a custom-built ‘gym pack’ that includes everything from design to delivery of a complete hot water system in one easy to install, fully specified and energy efficient ‘pack’ delivered direct to site. The site has reported excellent results from the systems which have been installed in multiple sites over the UK, with more rolling out over the next couple of years.

Rinnai has developed a new and innovative concept of economical and efficient hot water delivery specifically for gyms and fitness centres – bringing together all the components of a system in one bespoke pack for any operation, large or small, local and national.

Says Rinnai’s Chris Goggin, “Simply supplying a water heater unit (or multiple units) has become an antiquated notion that simply is not good enough. ‘System’ thinking, where we deliver to site the complete package, is what is going to give the gym chain the edge over the competition. The Rinnai system virtually guarantees endless amounts of hot water at useable temperatures, all on demand” Rinnai’s total gym solution includes water heaters, flues, scale protection, unvented cylinders, valves, prefabrication racks, advanced BMS controls – even water sampling equipment – specified, designed and delivered by Rinnai. Bringing the Outdoors In As we well and truly settle into 2017, the suspected trends are beginning to take a firm grip in the interiors world. In the modern home we are choosing to incorporate the Scandi style, in the form of pale wood furniture and clear glass lighting to give the space a clean, uncluttered feel. Bars and restaurants are adding a pop of colour to their projects, breathing life and fun into a room. A great example of this is Be At One, Nottingham who chose to use our popular LED ring fitting, yet added a twist by asking us to finish this in hot pink. Amongst all these trends, is one that has been around forever, yet is making its way to the top. Bringing the outdoors in, whether this be in the form of greenery or natural wood fittings is one way to create a sanctuary, and a feeling of calm. Creating huge windows to bring in natural light is a great way to achieve this, or why not add in a feature wall? When thinking of a feature wall, you’d be forgiven for thinking of something bright and busy. But using natural materials in a more neutral palette can be just as effective, such as marble, stone or even concrete. All suit very different tastes, but go hand in hand with a natural theme. Our bespoke wood light fittings can add a sense of craftsmanship and quality, or our handmade wicker wall lights provide a timeless ambience. For something a little quirky, have a look at our moss finished pendant lights for an earthy feel, or our manufactured driftwood feature lights can create an amazing centrepiece to catc h the eye.

However you choose to make this trend your own, be it for a bar, restaurant or your home, be sure to browse our website for inspiration.

Exor accreditation demonstrates the business’s ability to meet the rigorous pre-qualification requirements within the private and public sectors, signifying strong financial stability, compliance with legal requirements and competency. CQMS is dedicated to promoting higher health and safety standards within industry.

Any waste created is removed from site and recycled wherever possible. Designer Contracts does not use customers’ skips. Last year CRUK named the company ‘Take Back Partner of the Year’, for the second time. Graham Kempton, Designer Contracts’ logistics director was also honoured with the Recycling Champion of the Year award, for an individual who has gone the extra mile to ensure as much carpet as possible is recycled at their organisation. CRL teams up with Bellis Homes on the restoration of Grade II listed former convent CRL is working with Bellis Homes on the conversion of a Grade II listed former convent into 11 luxury apartments and detached house in North Barnet.

The construction insurance specialist was selected by the Essex-based upmarket luxury house builder to source structural defects warranties for the sympathetic conversion of Littleberries into stunning new homes. Littleberries Estate, a convent school run by the Sisters of Charity St Vincent between 1887 – 2007, is located within the Mill Hill Conservation Area and the North Barnet Area of Special Character in north London. Bellis Homes purchased the site with consent to convert the abandoned school house into 11 luxury apartments and to renovate the West Lodge, a single detached dilapidated building, into a three-bedroom house. The one, two and three bedroom apartments range in size between 1,800 sq ft – 4,000 sq ft. Bellis Homes has submitted a further planning application to provide roof terraces on several of the apartments which will offer spectacular views across the Mill Hill countryside. CRL was appointed at the beginning of the project to source a 10-year warranty certification to protect against any future structural issues. Mark Hedley, Business Manager for Bellis Homes, said: “In the past we worked with NHBC until one of our close contacts suggested that we should consider switching to CRL to source warranties for our developments.

“At the time, we had not worked with CRL before. However, it was their commitment to providing a high quality, flexible, competitively priced, customer focused service that gave us the confidence to work with a new intermediary. We have worked with CRL on six of our developments so far, including Littleberries.”

“The conversion of the existing heritage building meant the team at Bellis Homes has had a lot of restrictions placed on the build, we were able to take these into consideration and find a sustainable warranty solution that fitted our client’s specific requirements.

CRL were able to take the complexities of the conversion, including its Grade II listed status and the more unusual aspects of the build, and assist Bellis Homes in arranging appropriate cover that suited their requirements, allowing them to focus on the restoration.

“Our flexible approach meant that we could offer them a product that ticked all the boxes and that the developer will be able to pass on to their buyers. At CRL we pride ourselves in our appetite for adventure and work with a range of developers and housebuilders on interesting and unusual renovations and new builds.”

Other interesting features of the build include reinstating the shell and core of the original chapel, which is being converted into a five-bedroom house. Bellis Homes is also restoring the ceiling in the guilt rooms, removing the safes in the basement and rejuvenate the avenue leading to a temple in the grounds. Once the building work is complete in February 2018, the 10-year structural defects insurance warranties will be passed on to the new owners of the apartments and house. Mark added: “Working with CRL has been very straight forward. The inception of the policy is very efficient and negotiable, and the building, inspection and completion process is seamless.” Mark West, Senior Customer Relationship Manager at CRL, said: “Our flexible solution of arranging the policy is enabling plans for Littleberries to progress with the assurance of a warranty for the people who buy and move into this outstanding development.

Hampshire Trust Bank is providing Bellis Homes with the funding for this unique development. Glen Trees is the estate agent marketing Littleberries, property prices are yet to be published. Bellis Homes is a family run business specialising in upmarket luxury home builder, with over 40 years of experience in construction, developing and project managing. From London to the Home Counties, Bellis Homes specialises in selecting upmarket developments in some of the most sought-after locations. The industrial movement meets the 21st Century with Rowico’s new Lowry collection. Growth of manufacturer recognised at national design impact awards Sealant and adhesive manufacturer Polyseam has achieved the ultimate design accolade for the rebrand of its GRAFT product range. The Yorkshire-headquartered company and its branding agency The Engine Room were both presented with a gold design impact trophy at the glittering DBA Design Effectiveness Awards in London. But the GRAFT project also went on to scoop the ultimate recognition of the evening when it was announced as the Grand Prix winner of winners at the end of the night. Since GRAFT’s launch in 2014, annual sales have increased by a staggering 744% and export levels have risen by more than £1million. In fact, this transformational business exercise has played a significant part in Polyseam now building a 50,000sqm factory which is expected to create a further 50 jobs by 2020. It was this bottom line impact that impressed the line-up of high-profile judges, which included Andy Palmer, CEO of

Aston Martin; Josh Berger, president and managing director of Warner Bros; and renowned entrepreneur Deborah Meaden. Commenting on the win, Polyseam’s marketing manager Olando Salina said: “The evolving challenges in the manufacturing market mean we must continually innovate to drive growth. We therefore focused on the development of an environmentally friendly, all-in-one adhesive and sealant created using our own in-house expertise. “This high-performance technology was already award-winning in its own right. But it didn’t achieve the traction we sought, which is why we engaged The Engine Room to help clarify our market position, overhaul the branding of this product range, and craft the communication materials we’d need moving forward. The Engine Room team has specific expertise in this field, and we were therefore delighted

when GRAFT was ‘born’. The project success is a testament to the collaboration of these forward-thinking business and design brains.” The Engine Room’s managing director Lesley Gulliver added: “The building, construction and manufacturing sectors are perhaps not renowned for their design prowess. But this project goes to show that strategic creative thinking is about much more than just what looks good. The overhaul of this product range and the development of the GRAFT brand has helped to revolutionise Polyseam’s entire business.” Polyseam has been independently manufacturing first-class brands for the majority of the world’s leading suppliers since 1993. The company manufactures more than 150 different products, and exports to 21 countries globally.

Single The innovative single sided light boxes are now available with a large range of graphic substrates from thin 2mm polycarbonate up to 5 mm Perspex, Plexiglas or double pane polycarbonate clear covers, allowing a digitally printed, light transmitting film between them. A perfect solution when backlit signs are required to enhance modern, vibrant graphics. To achieve the frameless appearance, the graphic substrates are inserted into thin lip grooves at the

Vision 2017 preview: new forms of architecture from BIG and UNStudio, fashion hybrids from ZHA and 3D-printed eco buildings In two weeks’ time Vision 2017 will open its doors for the third iteration of the annual built environment extravaganza. The event promises to gather some of the best architects, designers, researchers, manufacturers and suppliers from across the UK and Europe, for two days of CPD-certified learning and networking. Key highlights include: the first ever lecture from the BIG’s London studio; new research on the circular economy unveiled by UNStudio; an eco-friendly 3D-printed wall from Italy; the UK premiere of Axalta’s ICONICA installation; and the Code-Structed Skin architecture and fashion fusion project from Zaha Hadid Architects. Andy Young of BIG will outline his practice’s approach to architecture in general, that “yes is more”. Focusing on the social infrastructure of contemporary office design, he will demonstrate that our future workplaces will be a complex mix of essential hardware and high-quality places for people.

shows off the full range of colours available from the manufacturer. It debuted in Milan this year for the furniture fair and is travelling to London for the first time for Vision. The Code-Structed Skin project by Zaha Hadid Architects explores new computational fashion design methods and techniques as tools for creative expression and design intelligence. By collaborating across different sectors of the design community, architecture can learn from fashion and vice versa. Stefano Paiocchi will demonstrate that 3D-printed dresses can inform the way we crate complex buildings for the development of smarter cities, such as the Hyperloop project. Register now for your free ticket to attend Vision 2017 at

Caroline Bos of UNStudio will explore the rise of the digital marketplace and the sharing economy, along with the shift from spending on goods to ‘experiences’, explaining how designers must seek out ways to change retail spaces into places of reuse which can contribute to a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable circular economy. The future of retail spaces will be their ability to adapt and change in the future into multifunctional leisure zones. WASP have created a process that allows them to 3D print buildings out of clay. This highly sustainable approach to construction could revolutionise the industry as we know it, creating buildings that match their surroundings and leave no trace on the landscape. They will bring an installation to Vision to demonstrate this live to visitors. The ICONICA installation is a dynamic spinning frame that

2017 Home Improvement Trends The start of a new year brings with it new seasonal trends and the opportunity to take a fresh approach to home improvement and interior design. With so many sources of everyday inspiration, from social media sites such as Pinterest and Instagram, to the fast-moving world of fashion, what will excite and enthuse style-conscious homeowners in 2017? Here, Mark Farmer-Wright, Product Development Manager, for Anglian Home Improvements, takes a look at three key trends which he predicts will influence home styling in the New Year. Add your Personal Touch Personalisation is set to define home décor trends in 2017. At Anglian, we manufacture each and every window or door to the bespoke specification of the purchaser, so it is a truly individual product; but more and more we are seeing the demand for even greater personalisation. On the colour front, white will continue to become less popular with demand for sophisticated hues continuing to grow as more homeowners draw décor inspiration from their personalities for a look which complements their own unique sense of style. And when it comes to window frames, sage green, grey and cream are set to be some of the key growth colours in the next year. Bringing the Outdoors In Carried over from this year, ‘bringing the outside in’ continues to gather momentum in 2017: look no further than the must-have Pantone colour of the year, ‘greenery’ a vibrant yellow-green shade which evokes the natural environment. The blending of interior and exterior spaces is set to be one of the hottest trends with bi-fold doors in demand - and it’s easy to see why. As a nation of home lovers - and keen gardeners – it seems only right that the current trend for blending inside and outside spaces continues to be on the up. Not only do Bi-fold doors look stunning, they bring natural light into the home and open up the

property for easy access to the garden. In 2017, we will see more homeowners opting for Aluminium bi-fold doors, with slimmer sight lines than PVCU, so even when the doors are closed the room still feels as though it has been opened-up to the great outdoors. As well as adding a stylish modern edge to both the inside and outside of any home, the Anglian range is available in a choice of colours, so homeowners can also tap into the upcoming trend for personalisation, creating a look which suits their own unique style. #ihavethisthingwithdoors Design trends that once took years to work their way around the world now zoom across our radar with dazzling speed. Social media is having a huge influence on home styling, giving us instant access to an evolving host of concepts to pore over and draw inspiration from. More than ever, trends, inspiration and top tips are being driven by attitudes and responses to our changing world from the likes of Pinterest, Instagram and, to some extent, Twitter. It seems today’s house proud homeowner is increasingly obsessed with snapping and sharing photographs of their home; and, when they are not doing this, they are pinning, liking and re-tweeting photographs others have posted! Certain areas of the home are more of a focus than others, and a quick search on Instagram throws up almost 67,000 posts with the hashtag #ihavethisthingwithdoors. It’s unsurprising that doors are having ‘a moment’, given that they make such a statement to anyone walking past, approaching or entering the home. At Anglian, our composite doors have been in high demand and we expect sales of composite doors to increase even further this year, and at some point in the not too distant future overtake uPVC doors. They are seen as more energy efficient and more secure, but ultimately they provide more options for personalisation, with a greater range of colours. For more information, please go to

JIS Europe New for 2017, JIS Europe Ltd introduces the larger version of the popular Goodwood model. The original Goodwood stood at 1010mm high by 500mm wide with an output of 1489 BTU. The new model is 1400mm high by 500mm wide and has a BTU output of 1986. We have increasingly found a demand towards the larger rails and with this strongly in mind; we have introduced larger models within our more popular towel rails. The Goodwood is one of the more popular models, its striking styling with the side arm projection and oval bar profiling makes it a popular addition to the Sussex Range. The towel rail is designed to be installed either right armed or left armed, completely changing the appearance of the rail should you favour the verticals prominently positioned at the fore or subtly positioned at the back giving you the ultimate design control. Should you purchase the towel rail in electric only format, it will be supplied right armed as standard, however should you require left armed installation, please note this is available upon request at point of order. All the rails

within the Sussex Range are manufactured from 100% stainless steel. Stainless steel is the ethical, durable choice. Stainless steel is a manufactured from over 90% recyclable product and is 100% recyclable in itself. Furthermore there are no harmful chemical plating processes involved in its manufacture. Stainless steel is the durable choice; it will not rust, flake or corrode. This becomes even more important when you consider the very nature of the bathroom, wet, damp and steamy. It is a long lasting, hard wearing product, small scratches can be polished out and it is easily maintained with water and a micro-fibre cloth. It can be utilised in all systems including open. Its practicability is its first and foremost benefit. There are many others. The Goodwood 1400 is available in all three heating formats; electric only, plumbed in central heating and duel fuel. All the rails within the Sussex Range carry a 25 year guarantee and are available from stock on a next day delivery if your order is place by noon midday.

The Goodwood 1400 retails at £699 exclusive of VAT for the central heating model, £778.95 in the electric only format and is available as of March 2017. New Blowerproof Liquid set to transform air-tightness of buildings Airtightness is a dominant factor affecting a building’s energy performance. It can be argued that airtightness is more important than insulation in terms of thermal performance. Even small gaps in doors and windows can cause significant heat loss and once a building is constructed, stemming unwanted air flow can prove difficult and expensive. When deciding how to seal construction gaps, one common option is to use a polyurethane-based, spray foam filler or silicone or acrylic sealant to ensure air-tightness, but there are acknowledged problems, with shrinkage and adhesion being the main disadvantages.

and effectively an applicator can achieve a permanently secure and continuous seal. Blowerproof helps deliver energy performance well beyond building regulations.

Blowerproof has recently been awarded BBA (British Board of Agrément) Certificate 17/5410. Jack Georgiou, A new, BBA-certified, liquid air-tight Project Manager at BBA, says: membrane called Blowerproof is a “Blowerproof was subjected to a rigorous clever, quick, easy and cost-effective assessment by the BBA. ESSE has unveiled a stylish, new flueless gas fire design called ‘the Oval’. This striking rounded design joins the more angular shapes that the company already offers, and ESSE believes it will be just as popular for discerning customers in contemporary settings. As well as encouraging ‘fearlessness’ in design, the ESSE team are keen to dispel any fears about safety issues with regards to modern flueless gas heating. Sales Director Mark Blewitt explains: “We’ve heard reports over recent months that some installers across the industry, as well as a small number of homeowners, have expressed concerns over the safety of flueless gas appliances in the home. I believe this may be down to a lack of information about this innovative technology. “Here at ESSE, we’re keen to dispel these misconceptions by demonstrating that our flueless gas fires are entirely safe, having undergone rigorous testing. This technology is perfect for British homes without a chimney. These contemporary fires are easy to use, easy to install and extremely cost effective to run. “All ESSE gas fires are hand built in the UK and have been specified in living spaces worldwide. We’ve incorporated a number of advanced safety features, including flame failure and oxygen depletion devices. The innovative catalytic conversion technology of these stoves ‘cleans’ all products of combustion. “As an industry-leading Master Stove Maker, established in 1854, our flueless gas range benefits from 163 years of stove-building heritage and experience. Retailers, engineers and homeowners can rest assured that they receive the highest levels of quality from ESSE.

The freedom of flueless

“These slimline, contemporary, wall-mounted (or floormounted with new stand), flueless fires tick all the boxes for design, performance and safety. “Not only have we expanded the flueless gas fire collection to include the Oval, we have also made our new colours available across these models too. This is a particularly energy-efficient stove collection as virtually 100% of the heat radiates into the room, without being lost up a chimney. These contemporary fires are beautiful from every angle, with ESSE branded top covers for our floor-level mounted models. “They offer effortless control, especially with the optional remote control, and are very effective heaters - releasing warmth from top, sides and front.” ESSE is offering retailers, engineers and homeowners the opportunity to learn more about the company’s flueless fires and more, during an official manufacturing open week commencing 26th June 2017. There is also a FOC technical training day for Gas Safe Registered engineers on 14th June. To find out more and register your interest in either of these events, call 01282 813235, visit or email

Royal Lancaster London:

Launching September 2017 Royal Lancaster London will launch in September 2017 following an £80 million renovation led by Studio PROOF. Upon completion, the midcentury icon will reinstate its original name of ‘Royal Lancaster London’ in time for the hotel’s 50th Anniversary. Works include a dramatic new entrance façade and reception lobby, and the redesign of all 411 guestrooms and suites in the 18-storey tower – one of central London’s best-known landmarks on the boundary of Hyde Park. The lobby will be divided into a series of individual spaces, including a new bar. A restrained colour palette will be complemented with a focus on craftsmanship, joinery and metal work, with exquisite white marble and timeless metals such as gold, polished brass and bronze. A large curved marble staircase will allow guests on the first floor to view the ground floor within this magnificent space. Taking inspiration from luxury brands, Studio PROOF will apply the core materials of the interior design, especially the gold, polished brass and bronze metals, to the outer skin of the building to create five-star quality. The exterior design will be based on a series of vertical strata blended with a large 8m high glazed facade. The new guestroom design emphasizes the premium views over Hyde Park and offers luxurious details including tactile fabrics, beautiful bronze and glass elements, with bespoke light fittings. In a nod to the hotel’s roots in the 1960s, the design of the new suites blends mid-century nuances and the quirkiness of the English character from that era, with a contemporary edge – an approach that chimes with the hotel’s vision of ‘creating the future with the treasures of our past’. Doors, windows & architectural hardware Occupying a plot in East Dulwich measuring just 17.1m x 11.5m, this stunning private residence is testament to how meticulous design and planning can maximise both space and light. Glazing Vision’s Flushglaze rooflights bring much needed daylight into the property’s open-plan interiors and provide added dimension to its internal layout.

Rooflight specified fo short-listed courtyar Project challenges with a restricted plot size Stephen Blowers, co-founder of Designcubed Architects and himself the client, encountered a number of challenges once work commenced on the site. As both project manager and co-builder, Blowers had to prioritise the design aspirations for this eco-friendly house. Unable to build upwards and restricted by the planners to respect the building line and brickwork of the surrounding neighbourhood, Blowers decided on a clever, geometric courtyard concept. The exterior walls, composed of traditional blockwork and brick, were built to the outer perimeter of the plot, with courtyard •64•

areas created in the 2 corners diagonally opposite one another. These inner courtyard areas provide a quiet, private oasis and are enclosed by the flanks of the living quarters.

Solution for maximising natural daylight Of critical importance to the design of this single-storey courtyard property was the need to maximise the access to natural daylight. Blowers heavily invested in large amounts of glazing in the form of bi-fold doors out to the courtyards, floor to ceiling windows elsewhere, and 2 precision-engineered, Flushglaze rooflights from Glazing Vision.

Doors, windows & architectural hardware With their lack of visible internal framework these rooflights have not only added to the sense of airiness and height inside the property, but also enhanced its modern aesthetic. The glazing brightens the interior spaces below and negates the need for artificial light during the day. One rooflight runs the length of the wide, entrance hallway, providing a subtle bridge to the open-plan kitchendiner at the centre of the house. The other rooflight is strategically located to one side of the adjoining, “sunken” living room, bringing much needed natural daylight to the rear wall of this space. A valuable added benefit of these Glazing Vision Flushglaze rooflights is that they also provide excellent access to solar heat gains.

or RIBA rd house Courtyard House RIBA short-listing The Courtyard House is an outstanding example of the effective use of space, light and beautiful material finishes. It successfully achieves that delicate balance of privacy and seamless integration into its surroundings and was unquestionably worthy of its RIBA shortlisting in 2014.

MANUFACTURER LAUNCHES NEXT GENERATION HEAT PUMPS Renewable heating systems are gathering popularity as the UK continues its bid to reduce carbon emissions and utilise alternative energy sources.

To further support consumer demand, leading heat pump system manufacturer, NIBE, has launched the latest products to its range, the F1155 and F1255 inverter driven ground source heat pumps, both of which have been awarded MCS certification. “We are proud to be market leaders in this growing industry and continually seek to develop products which support consumer and installer needs,” said Robin Adderley sales director NIBE UK. “This latest product delivers extraordinary efficiencies and enjoys even more benefits to encourage consumers to reduce the use of fossil fuels.” In a standard heat pump the compressor works by an ‘On/ Off’ mechanism - the compressor is activated when heat is required and works to its maximum output to fulfil demand, meaning large buffer vessels are required. In comparison, the new intelligent Inverter driven heat pumps are speed controlled and regulate output according to demand. This allows the heat pump to automatically adjust itself to the power demand of the property which results in optimal savings and reduced energy consumption as the heat pump runs at the correct output all year round. Two sizes are available (1.5 – 6kW and 3 – 12kW) to suit a wide range of properties. Both operate at extraordinarily high efficiency levels – SCOP 5.2 at 35°C and both have been attributed A+++ energy label rating. In addition, the new range benefits from an intuitive user interface, it offers an automatically activated guide for quick and easy set up, a help function for more information and a problem solving alarm. Furthermore the F1155 can be combined with the existing range of NIBE VPB cylinders and accessories, whilst the F1255 contains an integrated 180L cylinder “Inverter heat pumps have the ability to revolutionise heating in the UK particularly for those consumers that are keen to make a positive impact on their carbon footprint and reduce their dependency on fossil fuels,” said Robin. “It’s about opening up the renewable energy market to more people giving them the choice of products to provide highly efficient heat, hot water and ventilation to their home or business.” The F1155 and F1255 heat pumps are compatible with NIBE Uplink and are MCS approved. To fulfil other requirements it is possible to control up to eight heating systems and accessorise the system to meet other applications such as pool heating, passive and active cooling and ventilation, the latter of which is achieved through the addition of the NEW NIBE ERS Heat Recovery Unit. Robin concluded; “Renewable energy is not just about now it is also about the future and we develop products to fulfil building requirements and energy restrictions that are sustainably focused. All our heat pumps and controls are smart-grid ready and are truly future-proofed to cope with whatever demands the energy market places on consumers, installers and manufacturers.” For more information, visit

New Design Strikes From AEON Sculptural Heating Stepping away from conventional home heating design, AEON brings a refreshing twist to the towel warmer and radiator to bathrooms everywhere. Unveiled at this year’s ISH exhibition, the Zig Zag collection of four designs has been causing quite a stir. Striking in stainless steel, Zig Zag (the M model), new to the AEON Collection stimulates the eyes and imagination. Never seen before in radiator design, the jagged, unpredictable continuous line forms an irregular pattern. Short diagonal bars haphazardly interlink to create strength and visual appeal. Much like a maze, Zig Zag (M) leads the eye to follow the cleverly designed pointed path. Smooth hand finished edges provide a premium look and feel welcome in any room daring to be a little bit different. Inspired by a striking lightning bolt, angular zig zags bring energy and dynamism to any interior. The geometric shapes of Zig Zag models E, K and T introduce a simple pattern and form into a room. These hand-finished radiators are designed to be eye catching and provide an opportunity to experiment with new shapes in the home. Traditional radiators limited to functionality can now have a life of their own and create a centre piece in any room. The Zig Zag collection from AEON is available in electric, hot water and dual fuel options. The vertical heated towel rail can be finished in either a polished or brushed stainless steel. 1500mm tall and 500mm wide, AEON valves are also available to complement the installation. The warranty on our AEON Collection is 10 years. Discover the AEON Collection at

RINNAI TAKES ON MAN v MACHINE CHALLENGE Rinnai, manufacturer of the market leading Infinity hot water heating units, has started a challenge that puts its product against tough opposition in the form of super league rugby team Widnes Vikings. Rinnai, an official sponsor of the Widnes Vikings rugby league club, put its Infinity water heaters head to head with the players in a contest of Man v Machine. The result is a series of YouTube videos that, right from kick off, see the Rinnai brand putting in a sterling performance. The challenge laid down to the Vikings was: •

Rinnai water heaters can produce 1000+ litres from a unit weighing just

31kg. How quickly can a professional rugby player pull this weight against his peers? •

Rinnai water heaters are accurate to 1°C of the chosen set point but how accurate are the Vikings?

After putting the team members through their paces in two gruelling playoffs, Gil Dudson, Vikings front row, headed the leader board for the club overall on both tasks – pulling 180 kgs in 10.93 seconds

(most stored hot water systems are considerably heavier that Rinnai’s sprightly 31kg) and kicking the oval ball at a Rinnai unit to test accuracy – and the Rinnai units won hands down for specifiers, installers and end users alike. Chris Goggin, Rinnai, says: “Relentless durability is a key feature of the Rinnai range of gas fired water heaters and that is the message we are aiming to get across by pairing with Widnes Vikings for this YouTube campaign. “This is a brand-heavy, mass media campaign targeted at increasing market awareness, albeit in a light-hearted manner. “The videos have been viewed on various platforms more than 21,000 times to date and impressions from the joint campaign with Widnes Viking platforms have created more than 55,000 to our Twitter profile. “We are encouraging our customers to use the Rinnai/Vikings YouTube videos in their marketing, too, to raise awareness of the Rinnai brand to their clients.” For more information on the RINNAI product range visit

Uplifting Inspiration for Your Client

How home commissions can benefit from a stylish “access all areas” solution

ith the UK’s well-documented ageing socio-demographic, there’s no doubt more domestic briefs for interior designers and architects will be coming from older clients. Many are adapting, extending and restyling their homes to avoid the stress of moving. Key to this trend is maintaining access and enjoyment to all areas of the property, even if elderly, infirm, or have a disability. What’s the point of building and designing a new first floor bedroom/dressing room suite if clients find it increasing difficulty to reach it?

Fundemental to this “futureproofing” residential challenge is the recommendation of a personal home lift installation. Specifiers may have been put off in the past by the rather utilitarian and bulky appearance of some home lifts; architects being particularly concerned about the structural loadbearing implications, especially in older properties. However, 2016 saw the introduction of the new LiftonDUO Home Lift, which has dramatically improved style and design, presenting an easy-to-install, innovative “stilts” concept which directly takes the strain of all loadbearing requirements.

Style and practicality combined The German-designed Lifton looks great in its own right, with a high quality, curved, compact and elegant capsule structure which looks equally at home downstairs or upstairs. All loadbearing is borne by two elegant “stilts” direct from ground floor to firstfloor ceiling, restricting any building work to a straightforward aperture ceiling opening, with all neat finishing materials supplied. The footprint is less that 1m2, minimising any impact on home interior styling and maximising living space.

Lift inside a staircase

for Zetland House Originally a printing works for the Bank of England, Zetland House, based in the heart of Shoreditch, is a distinctive and unusual character property. It has now been refurbished and repurposed as a set of modern office spaces and is used by a mix of businesses in the creative sector.

ecently, a new staircase area was being designed, and platform lift experts, Invalifts were consulted to give their input into the feasibility of a lift for disabled access. The lift needed to serve three floors and be situated at the centre of the staircase, whilst being glazed on all four sides to ensure the space retained it’s light and airy feel. The MC2000 platform lift, with it’s compact footprint and self supporting structure was installed by Invalifts, as it was the ideal solution for this access requirement. It’s •74•

Elite Outdoor Living & Elite Balustrade Systems Create Beautiful Garden Decking & Balcony Space for Manchester Family

A local customer came to us looking for a complete outdoor solution for her spacious garden in Manchester. The client had started the construction of a new kitchen and dining room extension to the back of the property. They were looking to create an outdoor space that would expand on the extension and allow easy access to their large garden. We arranged a site visit to meet our client and their builder for a discussion around their design ideas and what solutions we could offer. The client wanted two areas creating, one being outside their large bi-folding doors leading to a secure balcony overlooking the garden. The other was a lower area to the side of the property leading down to the garden. The total area covered was 42 square metres including steps from

the garden and up to the property. The steps to the property were designed so they could also be used as a seating area if required. The frameless glass balustrade was manufactured using one of our four standard glazing channels which we secured to a concrete block wall. We worked closely with the builder to ensure the wall was constructed to an exact height and to give a seamless look once the glazing channel and composite decking were installed. The area outside the bi-folding doors was installed and completed within two days, including the frameless glass balustrade. The lower decking area and steps were a bit more challenging due to the different levels we needed to work with, and the intricate details

required to ensure a quality Ăžnish once complete. Our products are designed with simplicity in mind which allowed us to complete the project quickly and easily. The QWICKBUILD deck frame and glazing channel were manufactured and pre-assembled in our UK workshop to strict quality assured standards, then transported to site as made-tomeasure kits. The creation of this state of the art garden design, has enabled us to demonstrate how seamlessly our balustrade solutions work with our composite decking boards and QWICKBUILD subframe.

How does it work? What does it cost? Does it use electric? And how much? Do I have to maintain it? How do I install it? How big is it? Do I need to empty it? What can go into the plant? What happens to the waste? Do I need planning permission? Do I need to inform the Environment agency? How long will it last? DOES IT SMELL!!!!!????? All of these questions can be answered by We Build It experts who know their products inside out; ask a middle man with no knowledge of the industry, product or process these questions and the customer is often baffled by terms such as BOD, COD, NH4, but do they really need to know this? All the homeowner, builder

or architect wants to know is that the product will work with the minimum effort from them during the life of the plant. We Build It Ltd offer straight forward, easy to follow advice for your sewage treatment needs. All of our sewage treatment plants come with easy to follow installation and service manuals, as well as free telephone assistance by specialist installers. The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway. As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the

need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or

harsh chemicals enter the unit, try to stick to Eco brands and stagger washing throughout the week.

Trends in Contract Kitchen Design Key looks and must-have features in 2017. Each year sees new trends in fitted kitchen design within new build housing and renovation schemes, as developers seek to meet consumer expectation for the latest looks and must-have appliances. Barry Casement, managing director at Lanzet – one of the main kitchen suppliers to the UK’s property sector, designing and supplying fitted kitchens to property developers of all sizes, explains what trends to expect in 2017. “Many of the trends affecting the contract kitchen sector reflect what’s happening in retail kitchen sales. But unlike other areas of interior design, where there can be major shifts in neutral to bright colours and key new looks led by big brands like Dulux, Farrow and Ball and high street retailers. Changes in contract kitchen design and looks tend to be more subtle and longer term. We have identified five key trends we expect to have most impact in 2017.” 1. Mix and match colour combos Mirroring the retail kitchen sector, mixing two colours within a single kitchen design is big news in contract kitchens and this trend will continue apace in 2017. The main colour combinations in high demand are anthracite and white, taupe and porcelain and also painted wood with natural woodgrains. You can adopt other complementary colours, such as navy blue and soft grey, for a softer contrast. Popular home interest web portal Houzz calls this trend “Tuxedo kitchen cabinets”, which, put simply, explains the monochromatic effect. The idea is to apply two complimentary tones, one light and one dark. The combination often denotes different areas within the kitchens, often with one hue for the island unit and another for walled units. 2. Dove Grey One shade of grey, not fifty, is currently dominating when it comes to colour (those that aren’t white or cream of

course) and that’s Dove Grey, a pale grey. It is frequently requested as either a high gloss or matt door and when paired with white walls and light grey flooring this is a kitchen that ticks all of the boxes in terms of being ‘on trend’ but is still a look that will offer longevity.

there’s a preference for thinner worktops; down to 12mm with quartz compared to 40mm with laminates. The bestselling solid worktop is a 20mm quartz however with some laminate suppliers now offering a 25mm square edge this is also becoming popular.

3. Clean lines in traditional homes

A more minimalist look is in high demand for both traditional and more contemporary homes. The trend towards pale gloss, handless doors and drawers will continue into 2017 and all appliances are now integrated into this overall look, hidden behind doors to give a uniform look. Statement canopy hoods have made way for integrated or telescopic extractors preventing a kitchen looking cluttered and busy. Clean lined, minimalist kitchens are particularly sought-after for homes with more open plan living.

For more information go to: trends-in-contract-kitchen-design/

Sleek in-frame solid timber doors, painted to order, are becoming the kitchen design of choice in homes at the higher end of the market, which also deliver this look. Shaker is still being specified teamed with modern handles and sleek, lighter worktops. Slab in-frame doors are also becoming popular, especially as a design combination with shaker style doors. 4. Thinner worktops moving away from laminate Laminate or granite have traditionally been the worktop of choice but solid quartz and technological innovations in granite and natural stone-effects are becoming hugely popular, especially as

DEMAND ESCALATES FOR RINNAI TRAINING Rinnai is a registered provider of CPD courses, which it has developed over the past few years, earning praise from the CPD Certification Scheme for the design of the courses. The manufacturer has seen an upswing in demand for its training as specifiers and engineers alike have switched on to the energy saving benefits of the A-rated Rinnai Infinity range. Rinnai’s qualifications as a provider of CPD courses are impressive: as the UK and European market leader in the supply of gas fired continuous flow water heaters for commercial, domestic and renewable integration, Rinnai is at the forefront of innovative and efficient systems and technology.

gaining experience on the latest energy saving appliances and systems. These training events are aimed primarily at engineers and facilities managers. The courses don’t just look at the individual units but also explore system design and how to deal successfully with legionella. The most popular course modules are ‘Understanding ACOP L8 and hot water system design’ and ‘System design incorporating continuous flow and renewables’. Engineer courses are held on the first and last Thursday of each month at Runcorn. More courses are in the process of being added, including one on the new Rinnai Infinity Solo, which is now awaiting CPD accreditation. The comprehensive engineer training course line-up for 2017 includes nine modules: Rinnai product overview; Continuous flow and the future of water heating; Intermediate water heater; Continuous flow - Excellence in design; Service and fault diagnostics (Water heaters); Service and fault diagnostics (Energy saver warm air units); Understanding ACOP L8 and hot water system design; Maximising renewable gain in hot water design; and, Continuous flow as an innovative method of satisfying energy and regulatory demands. CPD Roadshow courses are also available for M&E consultants and specifiers, design and build engineers, facilities managers and gas contractors. For more information contact Ian Jenkins on +44 (0)1928 531 870 or email For more details on RINNAI products visit

As Rinnai UK Managing Director Tony Gittings explains: “The UK water heating industry is facing a myriad of environmental and politically driven market forces, including the need to reduce carbon emissions within new and existing buildings. In the training modules we clarify and engage with the market to assist decision making and understanding of the different messages faced by today’s engineers, installers and designers. “Rinnai can demonstrate how innovation can reduce the burden on fossil fuels while maximising renewable gains. We also look at the growing support for continuous flow technologies and how this can benefit the industry versus traditional gas fired storage systems and analyse water heating design and specification discussing technical issues associated with product installation.” “Our training facility and CPD training courses ensure key market personnel at all levels can benefit from nationwide training from our highly skilled team of technical experts. Ensuring they are up to speed with changes in legislation and product developments. Rinnai can also deliver bite-size one- hour courses to suit your needs,” says Rinnai associate director Chris Goggin. For installers, specific hands-on training can be tailored to cover all aspects of commissioning and servicing processes. The Runcorn training facility has recently been redesigned and enlarged to cope with demand and is fitted with all the latest Rinnai technology so attendees can be assured they are

Is Spade Lane the UK’s largest single site metal roof refurb? At over 32,500m2 Spade Lane Distribution Centre, Sittingbourne, is the largest single site roof project to be undertaken using Delvemade Protective Coatings products, Seamsil and Delcote.

The Delcote specification includes the use of Seamsil to treat sheet cut edge corrosion and encapsulation of all sheet fixings. It was considered the best most cost effective refurbishment option for this major project. The contract was awarded to Giromax approved applicator C&W Industrial Roofing of Colchester, and the whole project was overseen by Matt Bishop of Giromax, the sole Distributor and administrator of the Delvemade Silicone Protective Coatings Programme. Over many years, Delvemade protective coatings have been specified and applied to protect the roofs of properties, that are home to many of the UK’s leading brands, on sites across the country. These include names such as Amazon, Asda, Royal Mail and Total Fitness, to name but a few. Seamsil is the UK’s Leading Cut Edge Corrosion Treatment. When used with Delcote it provides a very real alternative to resheeting. The Spade Lane project shows that Delvemade’s Protective Coatings Programme is a viable cost-effective choice for even the largest projects.

Seamsil is a unique flexible silicone remedial system developed by Delvemade Limited in conjunction with GE Silicones, part of the General Electric Company of America. The system, initially developed, over 20 years ago, to solve the problem of cut edge corrosion on steel roof cladding, has now become recognised as the most versatile and effective metal edge protection treatment in any situation where exposed metal is subjected to aggressive moisture conditions. For this reason, manufacturers across a variety of industries are specifying Seamsil in the production of fabrications where resistance to corrosion damage is a requirement. The Seamsil system has been developed against a background of decades of experience of roof refurbishment and repair and is designed to be ‘user friendly’ in application. A three-stage system, comprising a gun applied sealant, a brush applied basecoat and a brushable topcoat, Seamsil requires little in the way of expensive application equipment. Its built in simplicity makes Seamsil a most cost effective and reliable cure for edge and overlap corrosion problems.

The sheer scale of the recently completed job, asks the question, is this the largest job of its type ever in the UK? Let us know what do you think, here are the project stats: • Roof size 32,500m2 – that’s about the size of 8 football pitches. • Products, quantities and methods of application: • Seamsil Top Coat - 412 litres of the UK’s leading Cut Edge Corrosion Treatment - gun applied. (see product information below) • Seamsil Basecoat - 1,960 litres - brush applied. • Delcote - 25,000 litres of Goosewing Grey (Delvemade’s most popular colour) - spray coated. (See product information below). Delcote Architectural Coating is an inorganic mineral-based silicone with outstanding natural resistance to corrosion and UV light. It forms a tenacious, oxygen-free bond with steel to deliver protection equal to or better than the original product. When used in conjunction with Seamsil - the UK’s Leading Cut Edge Corrosion and overlap treatment, it forms a unique system that provides a seamless, proven, long-term solution to the vast majority of existing metal roof problems.
