Giving that landscaped project the Smiths’ range of decorative shingle is one of quality and can proudly boast the supply of genuine Cotswold stone shingle, with those lovely warm, honey and cream colours of the region. Understated yet sits very well in most environments. For example Smiths can offer their Oxford range of decorative shingle, a blend of neutral beiges and creams, typical of the Cotswolds. The Babcock Galleries at The National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard have opened to the public following a £4.5 million renovation led by architects Purcell and project managers Artelia. The opening coincides with the centenary of the First World War. The Galleries house a major new permanent exhibition; ‘Hear My Story’, which tells 100 years of life in the Navy and covers the personal stories from those who served at sea. The Babcock Galleries are housed within an 18th century naval storehouse. Storehouse 10 is a Grade I listed brick and timber framed building. Before major works were carried out the brickwork, which had suffered from erosion, was repaired

installed above the timbers to protect them and glass vision panels inserted so that they can still be viewed. This fully reversible solution creates a void for all services to run beneath

There is also the very popular Cotswold Limestone Chippings, again understated yet achieving quality design results, with its subtle colours and warm charm. Once more a versitle shingle that can be used in most landscape projects. If your requirements are a little bolder in colour then how about the Oxford Blue – a striking mix of slate blue, black and white! Ideal for that landscape design which requires a contrasting effect. This is but just a hint of what is on offer… a large range of shingles, various sizes various colours and smooth and irregular shapes. Manchester architect awarded charity honour The project is set to create a new standard for sustainable housing and was developed with the help of Arup´s structural and geotechnical designs, together with consultancy services on acoustics, vibrations, ground-borne noise and tunnelling. Arup also provided advanced design solutions related to the effects of two existing railway tunnels under the site that required a dedicated design of a base-isolation system for the main buildings. As a new growth model for the regeneration of the urban environment, the design creates a biological habitat in a total area of 40,000m2. The designers aim to inspire greater urban biodiversity in the face of Milan´s challenge of increasing pollution. Thanks to the huge amount of green area, the building not only optimizes, but also produces energy. Besides creating oxygen and humidity, the plants also absorb CO2 and dust particles, which improve the environment.

Steve Burne, managing director of Manchester architecture practice AEW, was presented with the Charity’s President’s Award at its recent 25th anniversary gala dinner. He was the unanimous choice of the judges for the award at this year’s event.

Steve’s involvement with the Charity began as an extension of the work AEW does with the Charity’s supporter, McDonald’s Restaurants, designing new stores and reimaging existing ones. He was asked to design the Charity’s Manchester House and has since been involved with multiple Houses across the

Steve’s involvement with the Charity is both personal and professional and he has raised more than £50,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities in the last decade with fundraisers and charity challenges. That total is set to rise later this year when Steve, along with sons Daniel and Adam, take on the nine-day Argentina to Chile bike ride with the Charity in October. He has been chairman of the board of governors of the Ronald McDonald House in Manchester,

Wiel Arets Architects complete Campus Hoogvliet Campus Hoogvliet is located just outside of Rotterdam and composed of six separate buildings that together compose one academic and socially focused community catalyst Campus Hoogvliet is a cluster of six buildings that together compose one academic and socially focused campus, located just outside of Rotterdam. These six new buildings–a sports center, an art studio, a safety academy, 100 residential units within one building, and two schools–have been plugged into a programmed tarmac that communicates the campus' boundary, and includes custom designed seating, a running track, and other place-making denotations. The campus’ immediate surroundings are characterized by mid-twentieth century period of post-WWII growth–and the campus aims to rectify the social and cultural deterioration that coupled the demolition of this once historic village. building. Pegasus Academy Trust, Croydon by Hayhurst and Co Hayhurst and Co’s remodelling of the Pegasus Academy in Croydon brings together years of piecemeal architecture into a coherent whole Most new architecture doesn’t actually involve new buildings. In a society such as ours, with an established building stock located within what is often a historically conceived urban fabric, architecture is more often than not an exercise in accretion rather than creation, an evolutionary, cumulative process that sees each generation leave its mark in the addition and adaptation of existing buildings. Residential architecture provides the best demonstration of this principle. In 2050, 70% of today’s homes will still exist. Most people have redecorated their homes at some point, some may have extended them, few have rebuilt them. Education too is another sector where new structures are often forced to integrate with old. Of course some schools are brand new but the majority more commonly experience periods of incremental intervention where portions of fabric are replaced, One of the latest examples of this approach is the new £4.2 million Pegasus Academy Trust in Croydon, south London. The building presents a veritable kaleidoscope of ad hoc architectural styles and accumulation over the past 150 years: Victorian board school core, functional 1950s remodelling, insipid 1990s extensions and now, courtesy

as a growing generation of architects who are yet to design an entirely new building but instead have developed a nuanced craft for adapting existing building stock. Previously associated with designing house extensions, it won the commission for this project on the basis of prior work it had completed placing new accommodation within an existing void in the same school.

University challenge Universities might have billions to splash on new buildings but they need to set their ambitions a whole lot higher, writes Amanda Baillieu There’s a poster I often pass. It says: “Come and study in Oxford, the city of dreaming spires.” The image is a montage of famous Oxford landmarks dominated by the Radcliffe Camera on which someone has written in black felt pen “I can’t read” and drawn a smiley face. Not many universities have a skyline of golden stone buildings but despite this they believe that architecture can exert a powerful pull. But what are they building exactly? by the country’s top universities represented by the Russell Group, which last week announced a £9 billion

Contour RollerMouse reduces muscle effort in the forearm by up to 20% Researchers at Harvard University have found that the RollerMouse device significantly improved the posture of the hand wrist, and shoulder compared to a conventional mouse, while performing tasks at a computer workstation. The study compared the RollerMouse to a conventional mouse, trackball and touchpad; it was determined that the RollerMouse had the greatest effect in reducing muscle effort in the forearm. Subjects also reported the RollerMouse to be easy to use with the least discomfort while performing tasks. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of different types of computer pointing devices and placements on posture and muscle activity of the hand and arm. A repeated measures laboratory study with 12 adults (6 males 6 females) was performed where participants completed two mouseintensive tasks while using a generic mouse, a trackball, a stand-alone touchpad, and a roller-mouse. An optical motion analysis system and an electromyography system monitored right upper extremity postures and muscle activity respectively. Roller-mouse

associated with a more neutral hand posture (including lower inter-fingertip spread, finger extension) along with significantly lower forearm extensor muscle activity. Centrally located pointing devices (the touchpad and the roller-mouse) were associated with significantly more neutral shoulder postures and reduced ulnar deviation. In addition, significantly lower forearm extensor muscle activities were observed for these two devices. Despite being unfamiliar with the device, users reported that the roller-mouse was not more difficult to use than the other devices. These results show that both device design and location illicit significantly different postures and forearm muscle activities during use; and suggest that hand posture metrics may be important when critically evaluating pointing devices and their association with musculoskeletal disorders.

CONSIDERED KITCHEN DESIGN INCLUDES AN INSINKERATOR® FOOD WASTE DISPOSER Practical and efficient by design, an InSinkErator® food waste disposer grants an elegant finish that maximises space in the kitchen, and a hygienic and environmentally responsible alternative when disposing of food waste. The reduction of waste in the home is an on-going necessity and, with the implementation of recycling systems, an increasing consideration in kitchen design. Fitting neatly and discreetly beneath the sink, the bladeless design of an InSinkErator® food waste disposer grinds food into minute particles for convenient and hygienic disposal of food waste, with the added advantage of at least one less storage bin to incorporate within the kitchen. One of the most sociable areas of the home, the kitchen is increasingly incorporated into the design of a property’s living area, and an InSinkErator® food waste disposer eliminates any unwelcome interruptions from

stale and gone-off food odours when entertaining. Disposing of leftovers can pose a particular challenge for lofty apartment owners, but an InSinkErator® food waste disposer can achieve a more space-efficient, odourfree kitchen, as well as fewer trips to ground floor bins. Approximately 20 per cent of all household waste comes from food and, not only can this become unpleasant when disposed of within the kitchen bin, but it has a significant impact on the environment, placing a huge strain on landfill sites. The grounded food waste produced by an InSinkErator® food waste disposers relieves this additional pressure,

offering a sustainable solution, as well as a contemporary convenience, to food waste in the kitchen. As the global leader and inventor of food waste disposers, InSinkErator® has a range of models to suit every kitchen, whether big or small, modern or more traditional in design. The InSinkErator® Evolution 200 waste disposer is a premium addition to the kitchen, fashioned in a space-saving, compact design that is 60 per cent quieter than standard models, and includes a fiveyear parts and labour guarantee for peace of mind. For growing households and first time buyers, InSinkErator® has launched the M Series range of three new food waste disposers. Stone and Stonework

Sand Blasting

Greenleaf Contractors Ltd was formed in 2000, initially as a ‘Farrow System’ franchise.

We specialise in surface preparation and cleaning services, which include blast cleaning, sand blasting, pressure washing, chemical cleaning and steam cleaning services. We also offer post blast cleaning services such as priming and painting including on-site Galvanising using Zinga and stone and brick sealing using Silane products. If you are looking for a local contractor specialising in surface preparation including blast and sand blasting services, pressure washing, chemical stripping and steam cleaning we can help. We cover a wide geographic area including the whole of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, regularly working in northern cities and towns such as Leeds, Bradford, Newcastle, Sheffield, Hull, York & Lincoln. In the past year we have also travelled as far as Edinburgh, London and deepest Cornwall! As members of the Ashrose Group nationwide coverage can be arranged. In 2002, along with three other exfranchisees, we split with the ‘Farrow System’ and formed the Ashrose Group, a co-operative of companies offering similar

low pressure sand jet cleaning services across the United Kingdom. Since the placing of Farrow System Ltd in Administration on 22nd January 2008 we have been contacted by a number of users and suppliers looking for a source and outlet for Machines & Parts. We can find parts, second hand machines, and can price similar machines as well. We can also (and have done!) provide advice and training in the art of setting up and using these machines. We can run specialist training courses in these machines, either at our premises, at yours, or even on site - this can be tailored to suit the applications you have for your machine. While we specialise in damp sand blasting and other sand or grit blasting applications there are applications where other techniques might be more suitable, not only will we admit this (!) but where possible we will try to find you an alternative and solve your challenge. In 2002 we started to use Zinga as a suitable primer for slurry blasted steel, this product provides a similar (or improved) protection as Hot Dip Galvanising effectively

21st Century Wood Heating Fully automated wood pellet central heating backed by generous government grants

Heating with wood has always been an attractive option, combining as it does cheaper heating bills, a sustainable fuel and the enjoyment of a real fire. However a woodburner has to be lit every time heat is needed, it needs to be kept loaded and logs have to be stored. And that’s where wood pellet stoves come in. You are still burning wood but the stove lights itself when it is needed and turns itself off when it isn’t. It can be programmed to keep the house at a certain temperature, to come on at certain times and it will do the hot water as well as the heating. In fact pellet stoves seem to combine the advantages of an oil or gas boiler and a woodburner, but without the drawbacks of either. Wood pellet stoves come in many shapes and sizes. For completely hands off heating a pellet utility boiler in the garage will take care of the warmth and hot water. It can be installed with a bulk hopper nearby and the fuel is simply blown in, just like an oil delivery. Buying the fuel like this will give you heating costs around 30% cheaper than using oil or electricity. For those that like the idea of a cooking range in the kitchen then the stunning looking Klover Smart 120 is clearly the answer. It has its own built in pellet hopper and will take care of all the heating and domestic hot water as well as being there to cook on like a modern day Aga. In the same contemporary style is the pellet insert stove, which is designed to fit into an existing fireplace or be built into a wall. If you like a real flame in the living room then there is a wide range of Klover in-house pellet boiler stoves that will heat anything from a two to a six bedroom house. They have an internal hopper to hold the pellets and are fully automated. The government have recognised that there is now an

automated, renewable and efficient way to heat your home and responded by offering very generous grants to anyone who wants to put in a wood pellet boiler stove. The Renewable Heat Incentive will pay householders for every kilowatt produced, depending on the heat demand of your house, which will result in payouts over seven years of fifteen to thirty thousand pounds. To learn more about clean, economical and environmentally friendly heating by wood pellets go to http://www.firepowerheating.co.uk/klover-products

With exceptional build quality and stunning design, Klover offer the widest range of MCS accredited wood pellet stoves in the country. Models include utility boilers, inserts, combination wood and pellet stoves and pellet cookers as well as a full range of elegant in-house boiler stoves.
