Touch Ironmongery LTd www.atouchofbrass.co.uk 210 Fulham road, chelsea London SW10 9PJ

The PerFecT Touch

E

stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. Originally called “A Touch of Brass”, the firm changed their name in 2003 in reaction to slowly advancing market changes in architectural ironmongery which is no longer supplied solely in brass, and to also reflect the broader range of products and finishes that they sell. In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Whatever finish you require, Touch can help you get the right look. Touch occupy their recently refurbished showroom at 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea, where they display a vast range of their 5,000 products. With a customer base including Interior Designers, Builders and individuals who are interested in the top end of the

Ironmongery market, Touch mainly supply to residential premises but hotel and office properties also contribute to their vast clientele. The company also have a healthy export market to all corners of the world, namely the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Touch’s owner and founder, Bill Benham, has 33 years’ experience in the ironmongery trade, as do his colleagues Jim Haselup and Alan Blanchard. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods

which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. Touch understand that keeping up with the fashion-shifts is imperative in order to provide every customer with the best solution for their requirements. Ironmongery can be a difficult and complicated aspect of a building project, as a result Touch aim to take this awkward aspect and make it user friendly and clear to understand by offering an onsite service where they carry out a detailed door by door, window by window, room by room Ironmongery schedule, highlighting all requirements and identifying any items that can be refurbished. Refurbishment is a large part of the business; Touch will undertake complete ironmongery refurbishment projects, and can restore old paint covered door furniture to their former glory, looking as new, at a fraction of the cost to replace.

The machinery to produce Venetian and roller blinds is now set up and in operation at the company’s national distribution facility in Kettering. Peter Kelsey, md of Designer Contracts said : “This investment further enhances our central curtain making facility which enables us to manage the production process from start to finish.

“It means that we keep our costs as low as possible to the benefit of all our customers, underpinning our promise of supplying our range of products at the most competitive price, as well as improving lead times by using our in-house transport fleet for efficient and speedy deliveries.” The company offers a complete curtain and blind package. Let it shine with new Vicaima High Gloss The characteristics of a High Gloss finish have long been valued by interior designers. Its ability to reflect light, the perception of luminosity and the illusion of space, all present a comfortable feeling of openness and elegance. The latest Vicaima finish, “High Gloss”, is now available as an option across many of their popular veneered and painted door, frame and wall panel products, allowing specifiers to achieve a premium finish for interior decoration without the burden of premium cost. Luxurious appeal is a term that best describes the new Vicaima High Gloss finish. Enhancing the natural beauty of real wood veneer or taking lacquered paint finishes to new levels of quality, are the hallmarks of this latest innovation from the Vicaima brand. Once the preserve of a select few, this new high gloss finish enables a touch of refinement to be attainable for many more applications, and all with the superior quality you would expect from a Vicaima product.

•8•

The new High Gloss finish can be applied to the wide range of Vicaima product components, including door and frame solutions, wardrobes and wall panels, creating sophisticated elements that connect with each other to fashion environments with character and personality. When it comes to the requirement for high gloss on a paint finish, the array of colours is almost endless. However to make life simple Vicaima use the RAL Color palette, one of the most widely used universal catalogues in the world, so specifiers can easily specify the tone that best suits their desired décor. For more information simply download a copy of the new High Gloss brochure from the Vicaima website. times to use in today’s digital age so it is a perfect fit for James Latham, particularly because of our 260-year history in which time we will have supplied plywood for many of the innovative uses and applications which are being highlighted.” James Latham’s full range of plywood, along with its enormous portfolio of decorative surface solutions, can be seen at its Product Specification Showroom at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London which has been created to inspire architects and designers, provide expert advice and enable them to keep abreast of the latest trends and developments within the sector. THE MODERN WORLD

P

lywood: Material of the Modern World will explore the innovative use of plywood in objects ranging from vehicles to furniture, and from architecture to graphic design - offering a new perspective of this versatile material. James Latham’s unrivalled knowledge and passion for timber, and in particular, its incredible history of selling this product - which began more than two and a half centuries ago – and included supplying plywood for the manufacture of Spitfire aircrafts during World War 2, has close links to the exhibition which includes the story of the fastest and highest-flying aeroplane of WWII, the de Havilland Mosquito. Other highlights will include a moulded plywood leg splint designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1942, surfboards, and designs for mass-produced US prefabricated housing. Plywood: Material of the Modern World is co-curated by Christopher Wilk, Keeper of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion at the V&A, and Elizabeth Bisley, Curator in the Department of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion at the V&A. The exhibition brings together significant new research with new acquisitions and objects that have never before been on public display. It will take visitors through plywood’s many reputational transformations; from a cheap product that was often hidden or maligned for its inferiority to solid timber, to the material prized by mid-century modernists and by today’s flourishing maker movement. Chris Sutton, Managing Director of James Latham said: “This exhibition will look at the many different methods of manufacture using plywood and its history, from ancient

Cubicle Signage - Way finding at its best! Ever since Robert Propst came up with the idea of the “action office” in the 1960’s, office spaces were transformed forever. Although the CUBICLE is infamous for being the symbol of corporate oppression, the original idea of Propst, Nelson and the iconic furniture design company: Herman Miller, was to create a warmer, brighter atmosphere amongst office workers. These innovative designers realized that office work is mainly mental and should allow better environment for actual creativity. Even today, 50 years later, the cubicle is getting a facelift and many workplace designers are finding this solution as versatile and refreshing now as it was 50 years ago. Cubicles are often used as the ideal working environment for telemarketers, sales teams, banks and dealerships.. Cubicle office spaces may easily seem as an impossible maze, buzzing like a beehive, populated by a large numbers of employees, noisy and hard to get around in, especially if directional signage is overlooks or entirely neglected. But it does not have to be like that. Cubicle signs and name plates provide a practical way to bring order into this noisy, busy setting, reduce distractions and add a personal touch. Vista System rose to the challenge and created a special line of cubicle signs and name plates, with a variety of brackets suitable for any open-space working environment. True to form, all Vista name plates and signage solutions come in a large variety of sizes and include removable polycarbonate lenses, making it extremely simple to change the graphics. The signs accept either paper graphics or vinyl, film, foil and other materials. Removal of the lenses is done by Vista suction cup, provided with each order Custom designed aluminum hangers and brackets are suitable for either cubicle walls, partitions and floating ceilings in a variety of widths and lengths. For example: A unique pin-held sign is specifically adaptable to felt partitions ... and there is a lot more! All of Vista’s cubicle sign frames are custom fabricated to order with clear, black or custom painted finish, including the end caps. Cubicle signs complement the amazing new trend in office space design, as well as the bold, innovative furniture. One might argue now that the cubicle is more relevant than ever before. Fixed rooflights for contemporary design and PassivHaus principles Nestled on a tree-lined street of Edwardian homes in Chiswick, West London, this 3-storey private residence is a stunning embodiment of modern architectural design and PassivHaus principles. Glazing Vision’s Flushglaze rooflights were absolutely critical to the design, providing the essential amount of daylight required both to illuminate as well as to heat this eco-friendly home. Small plot, grand design Delivering this innovative and ecologically sensitive house was not without its challenges for the client and his architect, Richard Dudzicki Architects (RDA), an internationally experienced practice and one of the few PassivHaus specialists in the UK. Considerable local resistance to the building of a modern house on this previously derelict but small brownfield site, coupled with a 3 year battle to gain planning permission, meant concessions had to be made with regards to materials and design. London brick wraps around the building above ground to blend in with the local housing stock, and “living walls” of greenery help the top part of the house to “disappear”. Protecting the roots of the prominent tree at the front of the house was also a critical factor in the build process. RDA was keen to ensure that the interior of the house was also stylish and modern, whilst at the same time meeting the rigorous standards for energy efficiency.

•26•

Concrete was the material of choice – when insulated it retains the heat once it gets warm, and for the internal decor it offers a contemporary aesthetic. The focal point of the house is a central concrete staircase, and all floors are suspended from this core. The sculptural effect on the internal walls of this staircase, left when the wooden shuttering was removed from the concrete, complements the timber flooring and the recessed lighting on the treads. The openplan living area looks out onto a sunken courtyard garden at the back of the house, whilst the 2 bedrooms in the basement open onto private courtyards. Maximising daylight in a confined urban space Getting enough light into the rooms of the property was a major priority for both client and architect; the installation of Glazing Vision’s Flushglaze rooflights contributed significantly to enhancing the light quality and quantity in this property. All 3 rooflights were precision-engineered at Glazing Vision’s Norfolk factory to the exact dimensions specified by the architect. The largest of the rooflights, over 4m in length, is installed above the entrance and floods the hallway and adjoining living area with daylight. Its minimal internal framework adds to the sense of loft and airiness whilst beautifully complementing the modern glass balustrade of the staircase. On the top floor there are the 2 additional

Glazing Vision Flushglaze rooflights: one is located above the central stairwell, where the shafts of daylight bounce delightfully off the shutter-like concrete walls. The other is above the 3rd bedroom, where the smaller windows, deemed necessary in order to minimise the impact on neighbouring properties, would have otherwise compromised the light quality. For the architect these Flushglaze rooflights, pointed directly at the light source, also provided excellent access to solar heat gains, whilst the triple glazed panes provided enhanced thermal performance. These were both invaluable benefits and critical to the property’s PassivHaus design. A worthy winner of the Gold Award at the 2015 London Design Awards and a finalist in the urban category of the 2016 PassivHaus Awards, this Eco-Lodge is a superb example of what can be achieved with PassivHaus certification, where contemporary design and low energy building construction are in perfect synergy. Dudzicki himself has described it as his favourite passive house because it was “designed from the inside out like a true building should be!” To find out more about design considerations for your project, please call our technical department on 01379 353 741 or request a CPD.

The Alfriston family of towel rails, by JIS Europe Ltd, the Original Stainless Steel Towel Rail provider. When you first note the model Alfriston towel rail you will see its most striking feature: its strong mitred corners. Standing like a mounted picture, framed within its own frame, its strong styling sets it apart from the more standard ladder rail, yet it retains all of the practicability of a ladder rail. Its larger than normal bar spacing is a particularly practical feature; making it ideal for the family bathroom with its greater need for towel warming. We are so proud of the Alfriston that we chose to feature the Alfriston 1260 as the rail on the front cover of our new brochure. We first brought the Alfriston to market in June 2010 and it has proved a firm favourite with both staff and customers alike. We offer the Alfriston in 3 size and styling options: those that are vertically mounted and the horizontally mounted Alfriston 1000. Details are as below: Vertically Mounted: The Afriston 1260 stands at 1260mm high by 520mm wide, has an output of 2051 BTU and retails for £495.95 exclusive of VAT. The Alfriston 650 stands at 650mm high by 520mm wide, has an output of 1060 BTU and retails for 349.00 exclusive of VAT.

•32•

Horizontally Mounted: The Alfriston 1000 stands at 650mm high by 1000mm wide, has an output of 1389 BTU and retails for £449.00 exclusive of VAT. Offered in a choice of either satin or a highly polished steel surface, all the Alfriston towel rails are hand finished by the company’s craftsmen to ensure the highest quality is maintained; so it is no surprise that JIS is confident enough to offer its usual no-quibble 25 year guarantee. As with all other towel rails in the Sussex Range collection the Alfriston is offered in 3 heating formats, central heating plumbed in, electric only and duel fuel format. All of the towel rails within the Sussex Range are entirely fabricated from 304 grade stainless steel, of which over 90% is from recycled source and the rail itself is 100% recyclable at the end of its life. There are no environmentally harmful chemical plating processes in the manufacture of stainless steel, the very fact that is is not plated ensures the rails will not rust, flake or corrode and small marks can simply be polished out. This makes them a durable, as well as an attractive, environmentally-friendly choice. Should you require further information or like a copy of our new brochure please visit www.sussexrange.co.uk for further information or contact our friendly staff on 01444 831200.

wned by the same family for generations, the current owner was born in the house and has lived there ever since. While the basic structure of the house – including the roof - was in good condition, the windows were in a state of disrepair. In addition, the southern gable end had been letting in wind-driven rain through failed pointing and, despite having central heating (installed in the 1990s) and insulated attic spaces, the house was not a warm one. The owner’s aims were threefold: to replace the rotten and draughty windows with new; to insulate the walls, and; to improve the appearance of the house by re-introducing the 19th Century symmetry. After choosing timber casement windows to replace the rotten sashes, a number of wall insulation solutions were considered. The owner decided that external insulation would help resolve the aesthetics issue and deal with both the threat of failing pointing and general poor weather-proofing. Houlston Manor is solid-walled and without a damp-proof course and the risk of moisture condensation within the walls was considered to be of paramount

•48•

Bringing a 17th cen standards of energ Houlston Manor is an unlisted mainly 17th century box-framed farmhouse, which has been substantially added to and altered over the years. In the early 19th century, the house was also ‘gentrified’ according to the fashion of the day when the timber-framed front wall was replaced with brick to create a unified exterior.

ntury farmhouse to modern gy efficiency and comfort importance. The use of breathable materials, which would allow vapour transfer through the insulating layer, was essential and the Lime Green Warmshell system, which uses wood fibre board as the insulation layer and lime render as a weather-proofer, was judged to fit the bill. The sustainable Warmshell insulation system is flexible and perfect for bringing an old traditionally constructed building up to modern energy efficiency standards. To install the Warmshell system at Houlston Manor, wood-fibre insulation boards were fixed directly to the external brickwork after excavating down around the sides of the house at ground level – a precaution taken as the house had different floor levels internally. The insulation boards were then covered by two coats of lime render – a basecoat (with reinforcing fibreglass mesh) and decorative finishing coat. The eaves were also extended to ensure that the roof had significant overhang over the insulation and renders.

Houlston Manor is now secure, warm and weather-proof for decades to come. In the first three months following the installation of Warmshell (in winter 2015), the property used 2800kWh for heating, compared to 6821 kWh in the exact same period the previous year. This represents an incredible 59% reduction in energy costs! As the original brick walls dry out and warm up over time, the owners expect to see even greater energy cost savings. Houlston Manor is now ‘fit for purpose’ for the 21st century and beyond, a warm, cosy and energy efficient family home that will last for many more generations to come. New Blowerproof Liquid set to transform air-tightness of buildings Airtightness is a dominant factor affecting a building’s energy performance. It can be argued that airtightness is more important than insulation in terms of thermal performance. Even small gaps in doors and windows can cause significant heat loss and once a building is constructed, stemming unwanted air flow can prove difficult and expensive. When deciding how to seal construction gaps, one common option is to use a polyurethane-based, spray foam filler or silicone or acrylic sealant to ensure air-tightness, but there are acknowledged problems, with shrinkage and adhesion being the main disadvantages.

easily and effectively an applicator can achieve a permanently secure and continuous seal. Blowerproof helps deliver energy performance well beyond building regulations.

Blowerproof has recently been awarded BBA (British Board of Agrément) Certificate 17/5410. Jack A new, BBA-certified, liquid air-tight Georgiou, project manager at BBA, membrane called Blowerproof is a says: “Blowerproof was subjected to clever, quick, easy and cost-effective a rigorous assessment by the BBA. way to ensure outstanding air-tightness. Blowerproof is also available in white, so it doesn’t show through a plaster finish. Brushes rinse out under cold water, making Blowerproof Liquid Brush quick to deploy and pack away. It’s safe to use in high risk environments such as food, childcare and medical environments as it is free from both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and harmful chemicals. A building that leaks air is always thermally inefficient. These air leaks cost the building owner, so it’s easy to make the case for using Blowerproof. It quickly justifies both its product and labour costs. An easy way to ensure leaks are sealed, helping limit applicator error is a major step forward to improving building performance. Blowerproof can’t be beaten for how quickly,

Only products and systems that have passed a series of comprehensive assessments – including laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and inspection of production are awarded a BBA Certificate. Once a Certificate has been issued, six monthly surveillance of production and comprehensive three yearly reviews are required to maintain its validity.

In addition to the BBA, Blowerproof has Certification from a wide range of recognised European bodies, a full list can be found on the Blowerproof website. Blowerproof is also available as a roller application which can be used directly on blockwork, brick, masonry and as a spray which is ideal for larger areas such as walls and roofs. It can be directly applied to mineral wool, sprayed set foams or PIR insulation. For further information, or to purchase Blowerproof in the UK, please visit: www.blowerproof.co.uk.

CRL shines the spotlight on an eco-timber house in Aberdeenshire AN ENERGY efficient, eco timber house in Aberdeenshire has been crowned as a winner of a campaign that shines the spotlight on self-builders.

CRL

is delighted to announce that “Heartwood” in Aboyne is one of three winners selected to take part in its Venturous Builds campaign – an inspiring new web series that is showcasing Britain’s inspiring self-builders and their construction achievements.

The stunning three-bedroom home is insulated using recycled newspaper and recycled glass. With 216 m² of living space, there is also a double height dining room from which you can see the vaulted timber ceiling, with views over the beautiful rolling hills of Deeside.

Local couple Vic Kirwan, 68, and Teresa Green, 66, have been selected by the structural defects insurance specialist as being truly venturous of spirit.

Vic, who lives in Aboyne, said: “It was always our dream to build a timber home that was highly energy efficient. Construction is almost complete and we look forward to moving into our new home. Thank you to CRL for recognising how unique and energy efficient Heartwood is.”

Vic, a retired broadcast engineer, and Teresa, a dental receptionist, commissioned Stommel Haus, a German manufacturer of timber houses, to develop a custom built, energy efficient eco timber house. The campaign, which saw CRL launch its logo into space, aimed to inspire those who have dared to be venturous, brave and unorthodox to share the details of their venturous builds. Winners have had their project filmed and featured on the online show. The third episode of Venturous Builds is now live on the CRL YouTube channel “Heartwood” was built only using untreated Arctic Heartwood Spruce from FSC certified forests in Finland.

•52•

The house is heated using a heat pump and ground-breaking technology “Heating with Ice”, which uses ambient heat and solar thermic energy.

Barbara Fischer-Clark, of Stommel Haus, said: “Heartwood is a fantastic bespoke home and we are delighted to be named as one of the Venturous Build winners. What sets this property apart is the owners ecocommitment, Vic and Teresa have used ground-breaking technology to ensure it achieves the highest in energy efficiency, while working with a German partner to deliver the home of their dreams.” Filming is now complete on these unique projects. All three episode of Venturous Builds are now live. The Venturous Builds web series is hosted by English designer and regeneration expert Wayne Hemingway.

CRL CEO Steve Mansour said: “We’ve been blown away by the quality of all of the entries we’ve received for our Venturous Builds campaign. You’ve proved that the UK has some truly venturous self-builders and developers. Thank you to everyone who entered.

“However, we were looking for the one-offs, the inspiring, the ingenious construction projects to feature in our Venturous Builds web series. Vic and Teresa clearly demonstrate that they have the courage, determination and an unwavering belief in their ability to create something truly unique.

“Venturous builds celebrates the pioneering self-builders who, against the odds, have dared to dream big and have created the homes of their dreams.” Commenting on the winners, Wayne Hemingway said: “My wife and I designed and built our own home 19 years ago when our kids were young and it has been a true life enhancing experience ever since.

“Designing and building your own home is about getting something you really want, rather than getting a house someone else has designed or settling for what’s on the market. Vic and Teresa clearly knew what

they wanted when it came to their home and they clearly are revelling in the results. “Venturous Builds celebrates fantastic self-built homes and shows it’s about the spirit of getting on and doing it. It is truly inspiring to witness the people and the love of what they have achieved at the end of the process.” CRL does not shy away from arranging insurance for unusual projects, including new builds, complete or partially completed builds, timber frame constructions, prefabricated properties, mixed-use projects,

conversions and insolvent properties. The construction insurance experts recognise that every opportunity is different. With CRL there is no set criteria – just an appetite for adventure. For more information about CRL please: •

Priority should be given to the homes falling short of Decent Homes Standard

by the Association’s Code of Professional Practice which aims to further good technical and professional conduct and promotes sound relationships between members and their customers. A survey is carried out before installation to check that the building fabric is sound, with any necessary rectification works carried out. www.bufca.co.uk.

There is much uncertainty in the new build housing sector following the General Election. It is also unclear as to how or if the Conservative party can stick by their previously stated target of one million high quality sustainable homes by 2020. It’s vital that the UK substantially increases its housing stock. However, 20% of the existing homes in England still do not meet the Decent Homes Standard, according to ‘Housing in England: overview’, a report produced by the Department for Communities and Local Government, in January 2017. Shelter, the charity for homelessness, goes even further, saying in October 2016 that four in ten existing homes are not meeting the ‘Living Home Standard’, a measure devised by them to determine what makes an acceptable home. Many of these homes may be classed as hard-to-treat and cannot be insulated in the normal way. The walls are generally responsible for the largest area of heat loss. These properties may have irregular or narrow cavities which restricts the use of injected insulation methods, or have defective/corroded wall ties, or be unsuitable for external wall insulation due to planning restrictions. The use of injected polyurethane foam can provide the best solution for these properties. The polyurethane insulant is a twocomponent liquid system which produces a highly-efficient blanket of insulation with an exceptional thermal conductivity figure. Systems can be applied to various depths and have K-values in the range of 0.025 to 0.028W/mK. For cavity wall insulation, injected polyurethane foam provides a superior performing insulant which also helps to bond the inner and outer leaves providing strength to the building. Air leakage through the cavity can be reduced to zero. Because of the greater thermal performance and the reduced air leakage polyurethane foam outperforms all other forms of cavity fill. Injected polyurethane cavity wall insulation can be used in flood-plain areas to provide an additional barrier against water ingress through the walls. A closed cell sprayed polyurethane can also be used to insulate roofs to superior insulation standards – it has one of the highest insulation values commercially available. It also helps to achieve excellent structural stability for a building, adhering to the building substrate and setting quickly to form a rigid layer. The British Urethane Foam Contractors Association represents professional installers of sprayed and injected polyurethane foam systems. A BUFCA twenty-five year insurance warranty is available for cavity wall insulation projects. When choosing a BUFCA registered installer, customers can be assured of the highest standards of quality and service. Installers are required to abide

Growth of manufacturer recognised at national design impact awards Sealant and adhesive manufacturer Polyseam has achieved the ultimate design accolade for the rebrand of its GRAFT product range. The Yorkshire-headquartered company and its branding agency The Engine Room were both presented with a gold design impact trophy at the glittering DBA Design Effectiveness Awards in London. But the GRAFT project also went on to scoop the ultimate recognition of the evening when it was announced as the Grand Prix winner of winners at the end of the night. Since GRAFT’s launch in 2014, annual sales have increased by a staggering 744% and export levels have risen by more than £1million. In fact, this transformational business exercise has played a significant part in Polyseam now building a 50,000sqm factory which is expected to create a further 50 jobs by 2020. It was this bottom line impact that impressed the line-up of high-profile judges, which included Andy Palmer, CEO of

•60•

Aston Martin; Josh Berger, president and managing director of Warner Bros; and renowned entrepreneur Deborah Meaden. Commenting on the win, Polyseam’s marketing manager Olando Salina said: “The evolving challenges in the manufacturing market mean we must continually innovate to drive growth. We therefore focused on the development of an environmentally friendly, all-in-one adhesive and sealant created using our own in-house expertise. “This high-performance technology was already award-winning in its own right. But it didn’t achieve the traction we sought, which is why we engaged The Engine Room to help clarify our market position, overhaul the branding of this product range, and craft the communication materials we’d need moving forward. The Engine Room team has specific expertise in this field, and we were therefore delighted

when GRAFT was ‘born’. The project success is a testament to the collaboration of these forward-thinking business and design brains.” The Engine Room’s managing director Lesley Gulliver added: “The building, construction and manufacturing sectors are perhaps not renowned for their design prowess. But this project goes to show that strategic creative thinking is about much more than just what looks good. The overhaul of this product range and the development of the GRAFT brand has helped to revolutionise Polyseam’s entire business.” Polyseam has been independently manufacturing first-class brands for the majority of the world’s leading suppliers since 1993. The company manufactures more than 150 different products, and exports to 21 countries globally.

The glass panels are held securely in place approximately 40mm from the edge, which creates a drainage solution not offered by other frameless glass balustrade designs. This creates an ideal solution for a frameless glass balustrade around rooftop terraces, and raised decking or patio areas. All Mini-Post brackets are manufactured from marine grade 2205 duplex stainless steel which offers superior corrosion resistance against the elements. Due to this, they are especially suitable for installation in coastal locations, and in areas with high chloride, humidity, and pollution. Available in a satin brushed or mirror polished finishes, our Mini-Post profiles are suitable for varying glass thicknesses between 12mm and 17.5mm. Requirements may vary depending on the location of the balustrade and whether a mini top rail is included.

Cutting edge design on the banks of the River Dee An exciting new build house in Aberdeen was at the early stages of the design, when Invalifts were contacted for their expert advice regarding a platform lift. The new house was situated on the banks of the River Dee and was to be a state of the art build with cutting edge design. For further information on the MC2000 platform lift or other products, visit www.invalifts.com or contact 0845 468 2543.

•66•

Invalifts identified the ideal location in the house plans for the lift to be situated. The client had requested that the lift was not to be a “dominant feature” in the house, therefore it was decided to orientate the lift doors on the long side of the shaft so that they were not seen from the main entrance of the house. The MC2000 platform lift was chosen as the ideal access solution and was built with a bespoke measurement of a slightly smaller width than a standard unit, in order for it to fit between two ceiling beams.

The unit measurements of 1150mm x 1590mm gave a useable platform of 1020mm x 1480mm. As the unit is self supporting the client did not have to construct supporting walls for the lift with all loadings being taken through the 60mm pit. The lift installation was completed in just 2 days on site, with the property owner commenting “just a brief note to commend your two engineers who have installed my lift. They were extremely professional, efficient and took the time to explain everything as they were going along.”

Platform Lifts Our range of platform lifts includes the MC2000 lift (right) - a high quality enclosed platform lift with a unique chain drive, and the option of glazing on all 4 shaft sides. With a fantastic guarantee, and small footprints available, this is a premier platform lift. We also offer stair platform lifts and a range of platform lifts for both internal and external use.

How Air Conditioning Works Mitsubishi Electric’s air conditioning systems use heat pump technology to provide heating, cooling and hot water where required. Our heat pumps require only a small amount of electricity to harvest, upgrade and move heat from one location to another. To achieve this a vapour compression cycle is used, which has the ability to move heat from one space to another. Low temperature heat from the environment can be increased to usable temperatures inside the building in the winter, or waste heat from a building can be moved outside in the summer, or even recovered in to hot water. The efficiency of a heat pump is known as the Coefficient of Performance or CoP (or Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) in cooling mode). This is a ratio of the heat delivered to power consumed. The operation of a heat pump is similar to a refrigerator. This process is known as the vapour compression cycle and the following is a more detailed explanation and example of the system delivering heat into a building. Cooling is the same, but the heat is taken from the inside and rejected to the outside.

1. Compression – Refrigerant vapour is raised in pressure and therefore temperature. 2. Condensing – This hot pressurised refrigerant vapour is then passed through a condenser, where it liquefies and gives off useable heat that can be delivered to a building by either air or water. 3. Expansion – Liquid refrigerant is then allowed to expand, which lowers its pressure. 4. Evaporation – The low pressure liquid then expands and absorbs naturally occurring heat from the environment (this can be from the air, water or ground) and in doing so changes back to a vapour, which is then passed to the compressor for the cycle to start again.
