MATERIAL CHOICE FROM JAMES LATHAM

James Latham

is enjoying great success with two of its latest surface materials, especially among architects, interior designers and furniture makers in the residential sector. New and exclusive to James Latham in the UK, the Allure range truly unique, real stone laminate. Allure includes an extensive palette of high-gloss bold and vibrant acrylic colours as well as a high-gloss wood grain. There’s also a stylish mirror laminate and a choice of rough-cut and brushed oak, smoked and stained veneers. Plus, there’s a range of eco-friendly reconstituted veneers in patterns such as Rosewood and Ebony, with its unmistakable very dark heartwood and characteristic streaks, giving the veneer a distinctive and striking appearance.

Another surface material being offered exclusively in the UK by James Latham is HIF Finesse, a revolution in conventional timber veneer panelling which gives dimension, depth and texture to an otherwise flat surface. With a mixture of contemporary designs and patterns - inspired by the flowing, dynamic shapes of the natural elements - HIF Finesse offers a range of eleven embossed MDF panels, each supplied with its own unique textured finish. Faces range from Italian Alpi engineered-veneer in colours including Ebony, Walnut and Light Oak, through to Oak and Walnut real wood-veneers. Plus, there is a paintable foil finish available. Manufactured in Germany, the panels are produced by applying 100,000 tonnes of pressure per square metre in a specialist press, forming the unique appearance of HIF-Finesse which would have an otherwise flat surface. In addition,

HIF-Finesse is also available in curved panels, with a matching range of edgings. HIF Finesse is available from James Latham in profiles and thicknesses from 1050 x 2450 x 18/21mm, 635 x 2450 x 21mm, 1270 x 3135 x 21mm, depending on the pattern and panels are held in stock at James Latham’s nine UK-wide panel sites. Chris Sutton, managing director of James Latham commented, “We have a history and expertise in bringing new and innovative products to the UK market and both the Allure and HIF Finesse ranges have already made a big impact within the A&D sector. James Latham now offers one of the UK’s widest ranges of innovative surface solutions, all available from one supplier, and directly from stock at all nine of our nationwide panel distribution sites.“

KRUSHR’S HOUSEHOLD RECYCLING COMPACTOR NOMINATED AS FINALIST

"This is a very proud moment for us.

People thought we were mad venturing into an industry dominated by huge corporations especially when we had limited experience in the kitchen industry."

UK business Krushr plc, designer and manufacturer of the Household Recycling Compactors has been nominated as a finalist in the ‘Kitchen Product Innovation of the Year’ category at the prestigious national awards, organised by kbbreview, the UK’s leading business-to-business magazine for the industry. Martin Preen, Managing Director for Krushr, says “This is a very proud moment for us. People thought we were mad venturing into an industry dominated by huge corporations especially when we had limited experience in the kitchen industry. Being a relatively small team we came across many challenges along the route from the hundreds of initial prototypes through to our recent launch and distribution in the US so this nomination alone is tribute to the hard work and dedication of our British entrepreneurs, designers and manufacturers.” Krushrs’ aspiration was to invent a household appliance which introduced a “green” consciousness to everyday life, one which would encourage every householder to recycle their waste. Their mission was to help individuals reduce their carbon footprint thereby saving energy, reducing raw material extraction and help combat climate change. Krushr set out to ensure the invention had other benefits too. They recognised it needed to be a smart appliance which could be seamlessly and beautifully integrated into a kitchen environment helping to keep it clutter free, it had to be able to segregate different types of recycling waste, they wanted it to be able to crush the waste to a fifth of its size and store four times more than a normal bin. They wanted the consumer to benefit from fewer trips to the outside bins. Ultimately their long term aim is to see a benefit pass on to refuse authorities being able to collect more volume less frequently. A credible nomination.

t22t

Tim Wallace, editor of kbbreview says: “This year marks a landmark 20 years of the biggest awards event in the industry, and we’re delighted to have kicked off the celebrations accordingly with a record number of entries. “As always the standard of submissions has been incredibly high and the judging process, already renowned for its rigor, has been revised to reflect this. As such, we would like to extend our special congratulations to Krushr on being nominated as a finalist in their category, and wish them the very best of luck.” Winners will be announced by the traditional opening of an envelope at the glittering, black tie gala dinner taking place on Tuesday 4th March 2014 at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole. w w w. k r u s h r. c o m

A young mum with three little girls. Esther Taylor was given the brief to create a modern sleek kitchen with classic colouring. Esther created a grey and white high gloss kitchen with an accent colour of purple which was used for the splashback and peninsular. The worktop is caesarstone. She chose an easy to clean porcelain tile on the floor and a high gloss finish on the kitchen units, also for ease of cleaning with lots of sticky fingers around! There was a garage adjacent to this room which was not being used so Esther knocked through an opening between the garage and soon to be kitchen. The property is situated on a hill and therefore the floor level is 40cm lower than kitchen - by adding 2 steps, Esther was able to make this work whilst maintaining an extra high ceilings in the snug room. She then introduced a pocket door between the 2 rooms thus giving the client the option to close the room o or have it open plan. The basic pallet of grey and white was followed through to the snug room although warmer textures were used in this room including a grey carpet and a grey textured wallpaper The follow on of palette links both of these rooms directly to each other creating a space where there are two rooms that can also be used individually or as one www.esthertaylordesign.com

DANFOSS LAUNCHES NEW COMMERCIAL HEAT PUMP WITH EVEN BETTER PERFORMANCE As part of its commitment to innovation in heat pump design, Danfoss has launched the new DHP-R Eco, a light commercial ground source heat pump that boasts greater performance and efficiency and helps to reduce running costs. The new heat pump's excellent performance is the result of Danfoss’ specially developed cooling circuit, coupled with a new design of compressor, new refrigerant and the latest generation heat exchanger. In addition, it features an in-built hot gas exchanger and a new electronic expansion valve, which further enhance its performance. Chris Dale, Director of Danfoss, said: “Our market leading light commercial heat pump just got even better. The large amount of energy it saves makes DHP-R Eco ideal for use in many different applications and we expect it to be popular for small housing schemes or large-scale projects, and particularly within the public sector. Against a backdrop of rising energy costs, the DHP-R eco is just what customers with light commercial projects are looking for.” DHP-R Eco has nine control circuits for heating/ cooling, which means that it can be adjusted to suit all types of property and heating system. Available in 22, 26, 33 and 42 kW sizes, it can be cascade-connected to up to eight machines, achieving a total output of up to 336 kW. An intelligent controller monitors the whole system, including heat pumps, cooling, hot water and an internet monitoring facility provides the user with the reassurance via SMS or email in the unlikely event that a fault should occur. Trend Group Joins Kohler Co To Form Sustainable Partnership Trend Group, a leading international manufacturer and distributor of glass mosaic tiles and agglomerates headquartered in Vicenza, Italy, has partnered with Wisconsin-based Kohler Co to further each company’s eco-friendly mission of keeping unnecessary waste out of landfill. With this collaboration, Kohler, a forward-thinking leader in plumbing products, will provide pre-consumer porcelain from its bath and sink manufacturing to be re-purposed for the production of Trend’s newest line of exclusive agglomerate surfaces, at its Sebring, Florida plant.

The finished product is an incredibly unique and durable surface that is universally appealing and earthfriendly, as a versatile option for home and commercial improvement projects. The new porcelain surfaces are nonporous and incredibly resistant to stains, scratches and heat, helping to ensure lifetime usage of these products. These materials will also be marketed and installed through Trend’s global home improvements franchise, Granite Transformations, which will back them with a lifetime warranty.

This two-year partnership has resulted in the creation of Trend agglomerate products that are made with up to 51% of recovered Kohler porcelain, along with recycled glass and granite, a cooperative effort that has already kept nearly one million pounds of

collaboration mirrors our mission to be one of the world’s largest producers of decorative glass and agglomerate surfaces, using advanced technology to create inspiring materials that make for for beautiful and sustainable environments.” Long before it became fashionable, Trend Group, which has its UK headquarters in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, declared a commitment to implementing real-world processes that protect and preserve the planet’s resources. Trend products are thus designed specifically to consume fewer raw materials and to have extended durability. Its innovative agglomerate surfaces require 60% less raw material and incorporate both geologic waste and recycled glass that would otherwise be destined for landfill, with more than three

pounds of recycled glass already repurposed into decorative products. Trend’s development of new product lines sets industry benchmarks for the use of postconsumer recycled content in agglomerate and glass tile products, reaching levels as high as 78%. The Group’s manufacturing facilities were designed with sophisticated recycling systems that significantly reduce water consumption and the proliferation of pollutants, while the consumption and cost of packaging materials has been reduced through the use of recycled or reusable packaging. Most of the product lines are created with a low carbon emission manufacturing process using recycled materials whenever possible. Trend collaborates with the world’s leading environmental

organizations, architects and designers to promote sustainable building practices and its product lines contribute measurably to LEED Green Building Council ratings, based on credits for Material and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation and Design. This outlook is also evident in Trend’s global franchise network, Granite Transformations, which is known for its ability to install products over existing kitchen and bathroom surfaces in as little as a day. The unique installation process eliminates the need for demolition during the remodelling process, keeping unnecessary waste out of landfill. Granite Transformations is recognized for its exclusive line of granite-based surfaces, crafted to be stronger and more durable than traditional granite slab, and for its

recycled glass product line, made with up to 72% post-consumer tempered glass. All Granite Transformations work surface and mosaic makeover products are manufactured by the Trend Group. “We applaud Trend and Granite Transformations for seeking ways to create materials that can sustain the test of time,” says Rob Zimmerman, Kohler’s Senior Channel Manager of Sustainability. “Kohler’s alliance with these companies is consistent with our business model to maintain the highest standards of manufacturing products, while being environmentally conscious.” For further information, telephone 0800 044 5395 or contact Trend GB, 28 Decimus Park, Kingstanding Way, Tunbridge Wells TN2 3GP, email info-gb@trend-group.com.

‘Sensible perspective during a heated market’ Ashton Rose outlines key considerations for buyers of London property in 2014 -Go Central, spot value and consider new build-

Ashton Rose, the independent boutique property consultancy specialising in the sale and acquisition of premium properties in London, today highlights the key considerations for prospective buyers of London property in 2014, in a market with a much contested future. With house prices in central London up 37% since 2005 and over 10% in 2013 alone, some see continued potential for growth in the market. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors predict sales in 2014 reaching a record level, with 76pc more surveyors expecting sales to increase, the highest reading since 1998. This is supported by expectations of longer term sustained growth with a number of property companies pointing to a golden era of London property generating a further 25% growth over the next 5 years. Others anticipate an inevitable correction, speculating on a pause in international demand, a new mansion tax or a sterling crisis forcing sales and a fall in prices. Inessa Falina, Head of Property Services at Ashton Rose, offers 3 key considerations for prospective buyers of London property in 2014, to avoid any short term bubble and generate long term value growth: 1. CENTRAL - Westminster, Kensington, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Notting Hill, Holland Park and riverside locations in central London. Whilst prices have risen and should continue to rise in these areas, they are historically the first to bounce back from any market correction.

2. VALUE OPPORTUNITIES – Whilst central London properties are often perceived as being the luxury of the very wealthy, opportunities to buy affordable properties in zone 1 still exist. Elephant and Castle still offers an offplan flat from £750 per square foot. 3. NEW BUILD FLEXIBILITY – Whilst modern design newbuild properties often sell themselves, these also offer potential owners a variety of financing packages in the early stages of development, giving the buyer cash flow flexibility whilst guaranteeing them their London property equity. Against traditional properties they often offer far greater flexibility in terms of lay out structure and design. Commenting on the considerations Inessa Falina said ”Whilst many speculate one way or another on which way the market is going, our message is simple; we see London property as a long term fantastic growth opportunity which is why it is now an accepted global asset class. Nevertheless we advise clients to consider these points to ensure that their property provides the perfect investment or home for their long term needs.”

Choose the right fireplace with English Fireplaces When it comes to choosing a fireplace, the team at English Fireplaces are experienced, friendly and knowledgeable. Here, they share with us their Top 6 Recommendations 1. Before you start any research, carefully measure your chimney breast and fire opening. This will affect your choice of surround and you may wish to explore if your preferred retailer offers a bespoke service. 2. When choosing a fireplace don’t worry too much about matching the fireplace to the period of your home. In our experience, your choice is more important than historical authenticity. As long as the surround is an item of beauty and it fits in well with the rest of the room decor it is likely to create a stunning impact. 3. Have a site survey done by your chosen fitter before buying your surround. This will confirm all measurements are precise and ensure there are no practical barriers to your fireplace functioning successfully. 4. Always have your fire fitted by a registered installer, who can then issue you with a certificate of compliance. This will not only give you peace of mind but is often needed should you decide to sell your home. 5. Always place a carbon monoxide detector near to the fireplace and ideally also where people sleep. Carbon Monoxide is extremely dangerous in the unlikely event that a fire or chimney should malfunction. 6. If you have a chimney, it should be swept once a year. This ensures your fire remains safe and functioning to the highest standard possible. If you choose a gas fire, we recommend having it serviced once a year by a gas safe qualified engineer.

RECENT PROJECTS LUXURY RIVERSIDE HOMES SAVE CARBON WITH INNOVATIVE GI ENERGY HEATING SYSTEM Ground Source Heat Pump system more efficient than conventional heating Luxury homes on the site of the famous Rafts Boathouse at Eton overlooking the River Thames and Windsor Castle are all to be heated by an innovative system that makes use of the heat stored naturally underground.

Andrew Corner, Business Development Director, GI Energy said: “The beauty of Ground Source Heat Pump systems is that they can be installed in almost any location – from countryside to inner city – and still deliver savings.

Each of the 13 apartments being built by Bewley Homes on the site once owned by the world’s most famous public school, Eton, will have their heat supplied by a shared Ground Source Heat Pump system that will result in substantial savings in carbon emissions per year.

“By exploiting the heat stored naturally underground, Ground Source Heat Pump systems both save on energy bills and reduce carbon footprints. On average they are four times as efficient as conventional central heating.

The £500,000 system is being installed and will be remotely monitored by GI Energy, the UK market leader in the design and installation of Ground Source Heat Pump systems, based in Coventry, UK. GI Energy pioneered the use of this renewable energy in the UK and to date has completed more than 200MW of installations in schools, universities, hospitals, commercial developments, police headquarters and housing.

“These are fantastic savings and the shrinking of carbon footprint is also impressive - all in a system that delivers heating in a clean format that can be individually controlled within each apartment. ”I am delighted that Bewley Homes has selected GI Energy to install the Ground Source Heat Pump system at Rafts Boathouse, and I am sure the future owners will enjoy their truly 21st century heating system.”

The Octa table by Bonaldo wins the Good Design Award The Octa table by Bonaldo has been awarded within the furniture category the prestigious Good Design Award, an international design award which is assigned to the most innovative products in the year. Set up in 1950, the Good Design Award is organised by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in conjunction with the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. The winning products are displayed permanently within the Chicago Athenaeum. The name Octa derives from the Greek word Octo: eight, the number of legs that make up this table designed by Bartoli Design for Bonaldo, made of bent and welded metal rod. Inspired by the game of Mikado pick-up sticks, the Octo legs are, in fact, the true stars of the new project by Bartoli Design: they lend the table an unusual visual lightness, in addition to great solidity and stability. Octa is available in a broad variety of finishes, including the innovative ceramic table top (LaminamŽ) aording the highest performance levels. Octa is also available with a lacquered wood, solid wood or glass table top. The base is made of chromed or painted metal.
