Hub Kitchens presents
The Cut kitchen by Record è Cucine A brand new kitchen concept, Hub Kitchens introduces The Cut kitchen, designed by London-based architect Alessandro Isola and produced by Record è Cucine.
Winner of the Architizer award, The Cut is an innovative kitchen design that features adaptable elements and inspired storage solutions. The Cut has been produced to the highest quality with a beautiful premium finish. Enhancing open plan living, The Cut features an L-shaped central island that houses a hidden wooden dining table. When stationed in the neutral “resting” position, the table protrudes 40cm and is convenient for added worktop space or used as a breakfast bar. The table can be extended in various positions, from 1m, perfect for a dinner for two and up to 2m, ideal for a larger family meal. The dining table can also rotate 90o adjacent to the island base units providing ample space for entertaining. When the table is fully extended, it rests on matt metal support legs which are fitted in the underside of the table. Each element of The Cut has been created with the homeowner in mind. Ceiling-mounted drawers, for example, are an inspired addition to the kitchen, ensuring that the storage comes to you. Using a feather-touch sensory system, a simple push will descend the unit, keeping it secured and suspended in the required position so the necessary utensils, spices and accessories are within reach. This system leaves worktops clear, clean and tidy and condiments and cookware out of sight.
Editor's choice Featuring exposed dividing walls and storage cupboards, The Cut benefits all areas of the open home. The kitchen area will benefit from easy to reach shelving and wine racks whilst the living area can still make best use of the spacious shelving, ideal for decorative accessories.
The Cut is available in an extensive range of worktop, cabinetry and surface finishes. From stone and wood effect laminates, lacquer, melamine as well as beautiful raw materials of knotted oak and chestnut, there are numerous material combinations to create tactile kitchen designs unique to the homeowner. The Cut also offers brand new finish, Fenix. A super-opaque nanotech finishing material, Fenix offers state of the art technological performance. Anti-fingerprint with low light reflectivity, Fenix thermally heals any superficial micro-scratches yet still offers a soft touch and a palette of subtle, organic hues to choose from.

DECENTRALISED CONTINUOUS FLO
AN ALTERNATIVE TO Centralised plant rooms for heating and hot water systems are a traditional solution and have been so for many years. But we live in different times where economic and energy efficiency – and legislative compliance – are demanded by users, premises owners and managers in both public and private sectors.
An alternative solution that marries high efficiency and wide ranges of modulation with simplicity of installation and design is the gas fired continuous flow hot water heating unit. These can be manifolded into a hot water system capable of coping with virtually any size of site or application. This system is a process of delivering a continuous flow of hot water at a constant temperature, without the need for storage. Continuous flow will only ever utilise energy whenever heat is needed i.e., the turning on of a tap in a washroom or a kitchen. When the units are in operation and heating water - gas is used - when the user is finished, so is the energy usage. With continuous flow systems, the user can set the required temperature of hot water to suit the needs and demands of the site. So, vulnerable users, such as children, the elderly or less able, can be safeguarded from the risk of scalding. Also, where the site has a secondary recirculating system the temperatures can be set at a level to further minimise the possibility of the proliferation of Legionella bacteria.
OW HOT WATER HEATING SYSTEMS
O CENTRAL PLANT Condensing continuous flow hot water solutions qualify for additional energy efficiency points, boosting building energy performance as they far exceed energy efficiencies called for in Part L Building Regulations (Conservation of fuel and power). The systems are also ‘A’ rated under ErP. Current thinking on the design of systems is moving towards separating the hot water production from the heating system completely as it can give better efficiencies all round. Buildings need hot water all year round. However, better insulation in most buildings, and a greater
awareness of energy efficiency, means there is a reduced need for heating input. In large commercial buildings, centralised heating and hot water systems have traditionally adopted the thermal storage design. These systems are frequently over-sized at the design stage in relation to actual usage on the not too scientific basis of ‘just in case’. This ‘hedging of bets’ approach to system design often leads to excessive safety margins, which in turn adds to the expense of purchase, installation and running costs. A storage type, conventional system of hot water that must be heated 24/7, 365 days a year to ensure hot water is always available is an anachronism in today’s energy and cost-conscious world. Even if no hot water is drawn off, a standard cylinder, just for example, can lose a maximum of 3Kw of heat a day as a standing loss. All cylinders suffer from this to some extent and it equates, over a year, to 1095Kw of energy wasted. If you also look at the gas saving alone it equates to 101.8m₃ of gas used. Decentralised hot water provision was recently installed at a luxury country club and spa in the leafy and very affluent Cheshire countryside. The site operators, having both the contractor and the consultant make calculations on usage and life cycle costings, was adamant that a stored hot water system was not in the frame for the new fit out as it would be “inefficient and expensive”. The company went on to specify 19 gas fired condensing continuous flow units over the whole site to fulfil its huge demand for 20,000 litres per hour of safe, temperature controlled hot water. The heavy-duty units feed executive soaker showers, poolside showers and all changing room ablutions. Within this complex, the water heaters feed the showers directly so there is no need for re-circulation around the building. With no centralised boiler room having to be incorporated into the plans.
Elsewhere, one local authority in North Wales is currently in the process of replacing its stored hot water systems with manifolded continuous flow systems. The council is set to make considerable savings on running costs. When the water isn’t running the continuous flow, system is not using fuel, which is ideal for the schools’ shut down during the holidays, for example. These claims and assertions have been borne out by independent scrutiny. Recent independent testing - by AECOM - of continuous flow hot water systems showed a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs, as well as life cycle costs over 20 years, when compared with indirect stored and stored hot water systems. The AECOM findings, after extensive deliberation, found that the brand’s continuous flow water heaters are 7.5% more economical than ‘traditional’ stored hot water systems. Decentralised water heating saves energy and money, but it also offers flexibility. If, for example, a hot water store cylinder should burst or break down, the whole system is shut down - no more hot water until the problem is fixed. With a manifolded system one unit may be at fault but this doesn’t stop the whole system shutting down. The problem of potential legionella proliferation is also better maintained in the design of a manifolded continuous flow system. In a continuous flow unit, water temperature for distribution is accurate to ±1˚C. The fact that there is no stratification as there is no storage ensures permanent even temperature and because of this there is no requirement to heat a volume of water just to ensure the elimination of legionella. Another plus is, if demand grows, additional plant can easily be added in a modular fashion at a later stage if required. In addition, smart controls can be added to commercial condensing continuous flow systems to boost and govern the performance of the hot water system. Sliding over rooflight provides ease of access to Victorian townhouse The ensuing creation of a delightful outdoor terrace in a five-storey Victorian townhouse in Chelsea was made possible by the installation of a sliding, retractable rooflight supplied by Glazing Vision. Stephen Fletcher Architects, renowned for their expertise in working with historically sensitive sites, have dramatically transformed this long and narrow townhouse into a stunningly impressive private residence complete with a new basement level beneath the footprint of the house, vaults and most of the rear garden. The internal rebuild was so extensive, with the relocation of an architecturally impressive staircase, that only the front façade and the roof of the original house remain. For Stephen Fletcher Architects the primary objective was to increase the sense of space throughout the restricted property.
Sliding over rooflight to provide space and natural daylight Glazing Vision’s Sliding Over Rooflight was specified as providing the best solution, given the limited roof space and was made to a bespoke size. Supported on tracks installed on the roof, the double-glazed rooflight abuts a fixed wall on one short side, and is framed on the adjacent side by an elegant glass weathered upstand, a nod to the glass balustrade of the staircase below. The external framework in slate grey nuances the polished grey plaster wall of the staircase, whilst the pure white, matt-finished internal framework ensures it enhances the airy ambience of the floor below. Its simple yet sophisticated sliding mechanism is electronically controlled at the touch of a button retracting the entire section of glazing, thereby providing an unimpeded, 100% clear-opening access from the stairwell out onto the roof terrace. In this case, Glazing Vision’s Sliding Over Rooflight maximises the amount of natural daylight within the property and ensures building occupants can make the most of the fabulous vistas over West London. However this multipurpose product is also used in a variety of projects for ventilation purposes to expel heat and allow fresh air to enter the rooms below.

Editor's Choice Q: How can I best maximise light in my home for an increased sense of well-being? A: Consider installing steel-framed windows and glazed internal screens… Don’t you feel just so good when it’s a sunny day outside. The days are longer, brighter… you feel full of life – those darker, winter days long forgotten. Evidence suggests it’s important you get that feel good factor inside your home too. It’s well known that balanced levels of sunlight are crucial for producing essential amounts of Vitamin D in our bodies. But, our positive well-being – physical and mental – also depends on frequent exposure to light. Daylight is the most energy-efficient way to achieve it. “Let the sun’s rays stream in to your home – they’re good for you” says Stuart Judge, managing director of Witham-based Crittall Windows, makers of steel window frames and doors for almost 170 years. “Our homes play a big part in our sense of well-being from the healthy pattern of light, dark and shade. Their design, how they are lit internally, and openings to natural outside light through windows and doors really do impact; to positively balance inside too little, or too much, light, shade, glare and privacy.” Mr Judge continues: “Steel-framed windows are ideal for maximising daylight in the home; steel is three times the strength of aluminium and achieves strong, elegant frames combining the slimmest of profiles. This allows large expanses of glass, bringing-in that essential natural daylight.” Lighten up Very much now on-trend are interior screens, which enable open plan living to take on a different dimension. They allow you to cleverly partition open areas to create contemporary ‘zones’ – without compromising on light or space. Crittall brings a further dimension to interiors through its minimalist style windows and its InnerVision® glazed steel partitioning screens.
LET THE DAY Designed with modern living in mind, they provide a sense of space, light, understated beauty, with clean lines, subtle detailing, excellent technical properties.
Elegantly slender, the slim steel framing, with single or double opening doors, is unobtrusive. Combining style with functionality, a distinguished-looking installation makes a wonderful talking point. Unmatched by other materials, steel windows and partitions possess slim profiling giving retro-looks with contemporary twists.
Cleverly dividing space without impeding light, they are the ideal solution, whether for an extension with dramatic steel-framed glazed screen forming a light-filled area off the kitchen, or a partition from bathroom to bedroom.
Advanced glazing options mean steel framed internal screens can be made to order to maximise natural illumination inside, and with enhanced acoustic properties giving more privacy and reduced noise levels, without compromising on security. And when those dark winter days return, more natural daylight coming in will lessen internal shadows and dark areas.
InnerVision image courtesy of Stiff and Trevillion - photography by Kilian O 'Sullivan.
YLIGHT FLOOD IN… For the kitchen, en-suite or home office they visually enhance living space and functionality. Also, they complement the lounge styling, the kids’ separate play/ games room. That quiet zone for parents. Chilly draughts are prevented, warmth kept-in for year-round comfort. Inside/outside Windowless areas can make you feel stressed, the interior dark and shadowy, which can affect how we feel, quality of life and our vitality. Another key contributor to our well-being is a clear view of the outdoors and being able to see from the inside your planted patio, flower beds, shrubs, trees.
The outside can be dramatically fused with the inside living space. By opening-up living space, a seamless transition between inside and out can be created. Bright, beautifully crafted walls of glazing and slim-profiled windows will reflect the timeless style of a period house, adeptly define spaces in a townhouse, minimalist urban loft, or warehouse apartment. Chris Eaton, associate director at Stiff and Trevillion Architects echoes this, commenting: “Defining a space with natural light is one of the key components of architectural design. The introduction of glazing into walls not only gives a greater sense of space and light, it also
helps render the materiality of a room and creates a strong connection with the landscape beyond. “Our work as a practice commonly deals with the reinterpretation of historic building stock. Using Crittall windows allows us to explore the aspects of space and light within these darker, more sensitive spaces, but also provides a strong visual character and detail which fits well into the original building fabric.”

raham Kempton, Designer Contracts’ logistics director was also honoured with Highly Commended in the ‘Recycling Champion of the Year’ category, for an individual who has gone the extra mile to ensure as much carpet as possible is recycled at their organisation. Laurance Bird, director of Carpet Recycling UK said: “We are really pleased with all the hard work Designer Contracts has put into its recycling scheme and the results speak for themselves. The awards are much deserved.” The company initially trialled a recycling scheme, spearheaded by Louise Abbott, Designer Contracts’ merchandise and marketing manager, in conjunction with CRUK, at its central region based in Chesterfield before rolling it out to all 12 of Designer Contracts’ regional offices. The scheme works by diverting 90% of its fitters’ unfitted carpet into felt underlay. What isn’t turned into underlay is used in the equestrian sector for arena flooring. This innovative scheme saves a staggering 250 tonnes of waste going to landfill every year. Said Louise: “We’re delighted to have been recognised, once again, for our recycling scheme and were pitted against some tough competition. We’re helping the environment by transforming our waste into a sustainable solution and from the customers’ point of view, dealing with a contractor or manufacturer that recycles materials is increasingly beneficial.”
Designer Contracts is Recycling Winner Again Fitters are supplied with a builder’s bag to fill with unfitted carpet to drop off at their nearest Designer Contracts regional depot. It is then taken to an approved recycling facility before being transformed into felt underlay. Any waste created is removed from site and recycled wherever possible. Designer Contracts does not use customers’ skips. The programme not only includes flooring. The company has recently invested £40,000 in a baling machine that helps

NOT JUST FOR THE GREEN-FINGERED… HOW A GREENHOUSE CAN ADD SERIOUS AESTHETIC VALUE TO A PROPERTY and interest. The glasshouse gives the visual illusion of extending the property, and for the homeowner, provides a convenient all-season section of their garden accessible through a downstairs room. Attaching a greenhouse to a property effectively adds an ‘indoor garden’ extension creating real visual interest around a home. Take this Hartley Botanic Paxton Abutting greenhouse in Verona Stone. The greenhouse’s colour and design means it works as a seamless and unusual addition to the property’s silhouette. The gable roof and intricate glass panes of the greenhouse adds a new, tangible prettiness to the property and gives the illusion of increased overall size.
Lancashire-based greenhouse and glasshouse manufacturer Hartley Botanic has been making its handmade, made-to-order garden structures for over 79 years. The manufacturer is the Royal Horticultural Society’s recommended greenhouse and glasshouse supplier and is the brand of choice for the UK’s leading horticultural institutions and designers with ‘Hartleys’ commissioned by the National Trust, Hampton Court and Kew…to name a few. Many of Hartley Botanic’s clients see their beautiful greenhouses and glasshouses, not just as an indispensable gardening tool, but as a way to add architectural presence and definition to their properties. Here are three inspirational ideas for using a greenhouse as part of an overall home design scheme. With its impressive architectural look a greenhouse or glasshouse can contribute additional drama to an existing property. This is especially the case when choosing a larger glasshouse or those with ornate period features such as cresting and roof finials. This bespoke glasshouse beautifully lends itself to the already imposing façade of this Georgian house in Leicestershire, adding presence
Commissioning a bespoke greenhouse or glasshouse means its design can mirror and reflect a property, or even extend its style and presence into the garden. The contemporary design of this Hartley Opus glasshouse perfectly mirrors the style of the accompanying property, effectively extending its architectural narrative into the garden. This has the effect of unifying both the indoor and outdoor spaces as well as emphasising the overall feel and character of the architect’s original vision. All Hartley Botanic’s greenhouses and glasshouses, whether a Victorian Grand Manor or small lean-to, are handmade to order using the finest materials and representing the highest level of engineering design. The company offers a 30 year ‘lifetime guarantee’ which covers the structure and installation of all its greenhouses, a formal acknowledgement for customers of their longevity. Customers purchasing a Hartley Botanic greenhouse are making an investment which will stand the test of time and be robust enough to travel well. Customers interested in purchasing a Hartley Botanic greenhouse should visit: https://www.hartley-botanic.co.uk or call 01457 819 155 for more information.

January Furniture Show Wins Trade Show Award Winner of the Interiors Monthly – Best Furniture Show Award, the January Furniture Show is the premier UK furniture and interiors trade show. With the UK furniture market valued at £10.6bn (figures from the British Furniture Manufacturers Association), it is a vital industry to the UK economy. Covering all aspects of furniture and interiors, including fabrics, flooring and lighting, the show has grown in importance and influence in the UK furniture trade since its first outing in 2015. The winning 2017 show featured over 500 UK and International exhibitors and had over 20,000 visitors. Buyers attending included those from retail furniture stores, contract and leisure buyers as well as interior designers and internal specifiers. Winning the award was a great delight to the organising team, especially as it is an award that is publicly voted for, and it was up against major European furniture and interior trade shows including Cologne and Milan. Show Director Laraine Janes said: “The whole team was delighted to receive this award. We provide a platform for manufacturers and suppliers to meet new and existing customers, and to show and sell their products. Our aim is to do that in the most friendly and efficient way possible, and in any easy to access and visit venue. Winning this award proves that we are succeeding in our aim and we are very proud of that, we thank everyone who voted for us. We are already planning to make sure that the 2018 show is just as good, if not better than this year, with the same great exhibitors, plus plenty of new ones, extended feature areas and a friendly environment.” In 2018 the January Furniture Show will again take place at the NEC, Birmingham, in Halls 1 to 5. With a re-booking rate of over 90% from this year’s show, 2018 promises to deliver new collections and models from the best manufacturers and suppliers in the furniture industry. Exhibiting will be major brands and household names including Parker Knoll, ercol, Duresta, Willis & Gambier, G Plan Upholstery, Skovby, Ego Italiano, Gallery Direct, Hestia, Mlily, Dar Lighting. A celebration of the UK furniture trade, the January Furniture Show is aiming to be an award winner again in 2018. Registration for the show will soon be open and for more information about the show, and to see the already extensive exhibitor list please go to www.januaryfurnitureshow.com

Cubicle Signage - Way finding at its best! Ever since Robert Propst came up with the idea of the “action office” in the 1960’s, office spaces were transformed forever. Although the CUBICLE is infamous for being the symbol of corporate oppression, the original idea of Propst, Nelson and the iconic furniture design company: Herman Miller, was to create a warmer, brighter atmosphere amongst office workers. These innovative designers realized that office work is mainly mental and should allow better environment for actual creativity. Even today, 50 years later, the cubicle is getting a facelift and many workplace designers are finding this solution as versatile and refreshing now as it was 50 years ago. Cubicles are often used as the ideal working environment for telemarketers, sales teams, banks and dealerships.. Cubicle office spaces may easily seem as an impossible maze, buzzing like a beehive, populated by a large numbers of employees, noisy and hard to get around in, especially if directional signage is overlooks or entirely neglected. But it does not have to be like that. Cubicle signs and name plates provide a practical way to bring order into this noisy, busy setting, reduce distractions and add a personal touch. Vista System rose to the challenge and created a special line of cubicle signs and name plates, with a variety of brackets suitable for any open-space working environment. True to form, all Vista name plates and signage solutions come in a large variety of sizes and include removable polycarbonate lenses, making it extremely simple to change the graphics. The signs accept either paper graphics or vinyl, film, foil and other materials. Removal of the lenses is done by Vista suction cup, provided with each order Custom designed aluminum hangers and brackets are suitable for either cubicle walls, partitions and floating ceilings in a variety of widths and lengths. For example: A unique pin-held sign is specifically adaptable to felt partitions ... and there is a lot more! All of Vista’s cubicle sign frames are custom fabricated to order with clear, black or custom painted finish, including the end caps. Cubicle signs complement the amazing new trend in office space design, as well as the bold, innovative furniture. One might argue now that the cubicle is more relevant than ever before. Platform Lift for the Festival of Speed The Goodwood Festival of Speed is an annual event for car lovers across the UK and beyond, featuring historic and modern racing vehicles attempting the famous hill climb in as short a time as possible. The festival attracts crowds of over 100,000 visitors on each of three days over the holiday weekend.
The lift needed to travel 3.3 metres with an open adjacent arrangement and glazed doors to serve the hospitality suite.
Due to the nature of the event, temporary buildings are erected to serve the needs of the visitors. Losberger UK Ltd are one such specialist in the supply of Goodwood’s temporary event structures.
With a 400 kilogram capacity and being fully weatherproofed against the unpredictable British weather, the lift was the perfect solution for access to the hospitality suite.
This year, they erected a hospitality suite which required a lift over just four days to assist with access during the Festival of Speed. Invalifts were contacted, and managed to supply and install their external platform lift, the LRH400 within the tight installation deadlines.
After the festival ended, the lift was carefully disassembled and taken back into storage for reuse again next year. To find out more about the LRH400 platform lift or other products, you can give Invalifts a call on 0845 468 2543 and speak to one of their friendly experts. www.invalifts.com
Platform Lifts Our range of platform lifts includes the MC2000 lift (right) - a high quality enclosed platform lift with a unique chain drive, and the option of glazing on all 4 shaft sides. With a fantastic guarantee, and small footprints available, this is a premier platform lift. We also offer stair platform lifts and a range of platform lifts for both internal and external use.

How the Hamiltons are Looking Forward and Upwards - to Retirement
How The Hamiltons Are Looking Forward - And Upwards - To Retirement
When Tony and Pene Hamilton, now in their seventies, bought their new house last year in a beautiful corner of Oxfordshire, their list of immediate home improvements had one unusual and key investment.
or, alongside the new kitchen and bathrooms, double glazing and redecoration throughout was a far sighted, yet stylish, addition to their magically restored detached home - that of a personal home lift.
Discreet yes - it nestles in the downstairs study and rises straight into the corner of their first-floor master bedroom, right by their bed. During the day, the lift is “parked” upstairs, taking up very little space with its footprint of just 0.82 metres. Elegant, too, as their online research resulted in them being one of the first families in Britain to install the new Lifton Home Lift. The beautiful curves of this domestic lift are styled in Germany and engineered in soft, warm grey aluminium, with a matching, halfglazed lift car fitted with soothing blue LED lighting for evening use. An innovative design concept makes use of two slim aluminium “stilts” which span ground floor to first floor ceiling and taking all the loadbearing, doing away with the need for a conventional lift shaft. Powered simply with a single 13 amp plug connection to their domestic electricity supply, the quiet electric motor is discreetly hidden on top of the lift. “We may not use it much at present, but as this is definitely our last house, we wanted to be forward looking and avoid any potential household disruption should any future health issues arise,” said Tony, a still-practising chartered accountant. “We know of people who have suffered strokes and are now having to live downstairs - if we had not invested in our Lifton “future-proofing” lift, we would have considered buying a bungalow.”
“Our architects and builders were astonished at the engineering absence of hydraulics and the relatively simple installation process with a small ceiling aperture - yes, some existing pipes and cables had to be slightly rerouted, but the manufacturers and installers, Stiltz Lifts, took care of all of that for us, and it was included in the overall purchase price” “What won us over to the Lifton Home Lift, however, was its beautiful, compact design - light years away from both those unsightly stair lifts and the bulky, square and claustrophobic lifts you sometimes find in shopping centres or offices. It is also multi-tasks, as when we go on holiday, the luggage starts and finishes its journey at home in our lift. Although the lift is not on immediate display to visitors, it is a definite feature, and we find friends are fascinated with its elegant simplicity, and all want a ride in it!” “We are now very content, not only with our retirement house relocation, but also its newly installed facilities which include our Lifton lift - it provides both us, and our family, total peace of mind, and gives us our own independence going forward, which is something we all value,” If you would like to find out more about Lifton Home Lifts, please visit www.lifton.co.uk or ring 0808 250 4739. Installation only takes a few days, and the lift comes with a two year warranty and Stiltz Lifts offer a low cost annual maintenance plan.

New Blowerproof Liquid set to transform air-tightness of buildings Airtightness is a dominant factor affecting a building’s energy performance. It can be argued that airtightness is more important than insulation in terms of thermal performance. Even small gaps in doors and windows can cause significant heat loss and once a building is constructed, stemming unwanted air flow can prove difficult and expensive. When deciding how to seal construction gaps, one common option is to use a polyurethane-based, spray foam filler or silicone or acrylic sealant to ensure air-tightness, but there are acknowledged problems, with shrinkage and adhesion being the main disadvantages.
easily and effectively an applicator can achieve a permanently secure and continuous seal. Blowerproof helps deliver energy performance well beyond building regulations.
Blowerproof has recently been awarded BBA (British Board of Agrément) Certificate 17/5410. Jack A new, BBA-certified, liquid air-tight Georgiou, project manager at BBA, membrane called Blowerproof is a says: “Blowerproof was subjected to clever, quick, easy and cost-effective a rigorous assessment by the BBA. way to ensure outstanding air-tightness. Blowerproof is also available in white, so it doesn’t show through a plaster finish. Brushes rinse out under cold water, making Blowerproof Liquid Brush quick to deploy and pack away. It’s safe to use in high risk environments such as food, childcare and medical environments as it is free from both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and harmful chemicals. A building that leaks air is always thermally inefficient. These air leaks cost the building owner, so it’s easy to make the case for using Blowerproof. It quickly justifies both its product and labour costs. An easy way to ensure leaks are sealed, helping limit applicator error is a major step forward to improving building performance. Blowerproof can’t be beaten for how quickly,
throughout the construction industry as confirmation that a product is fit for purpose. Only products and systems that have passed a series of comprehensive assessments – including laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and inspection of production are awarded a BBA Certificate. Once a Certificate has been issued, six monthly surveillance of production and comprehensive three yearly reviews are required to maintain its validity.
In addition to the BBA, Blowerproof has Certification from a wide range of recognised European bodies, a full list can be found on the Blowerproof website. Blowerproof is also available as a roller application which can be used directly on blockwork, brick, masonry and as a spray which is ideal for larger areas such as walls and roofs. It can be directly applied to mineral wool, sprayed set foams or PIR insulation. For further information, or to purchase Blowerproof in the UK, please visit: www.blowerproof.co.uk.

This gives a 17% improvement in DHW efficiency (over the FTC4 cylinders) and advanced heating times. The range features five Cylinder Solutions: Monobloc Packaged Cylinder, Monobloc Pre-Plumbed Slimline Cylinders, Monobloc Pre-Plumbed Standard Cylinders, Monobloc Pre-Plumbed Solar Cylinders and Split Cylinders. As a head start, we always suggest considering the best possible wall insulation, loft insulation and double glazing as these are important factors to keep your home best insulated with renewables – and therefore helping save heating bills.
Our renewable energy experts will be happy to discuss the designing, planning and installation process for Air Source Heat Pumps or any of our other products, making it a clear and simple process. Investing in renewable energy products simply ensures that you can prepare for a more sustainable future, and there’s the added bonus of saving money and cutting usage too. At Green Square we are able to integrate renewables into your property plans, taking

New Design Strikes from AEON Sculptural Heating Stepping away from conventional home heating design, AEON brings a refreshing twist to the towel warmer and radiator to bathrooms everywhere. Unveiled at this year’s ISH exhibition, the Zig Zag collection of four designs has been causing quite a stir. Striking in stainless steel, Zig Zag (the M model), new to the AEON Collection stimulates the eyes and imagination. Never seen before in radiator design, the jagged, unpredictable continuous line forms an irregular pattern. Short diagonal bars haphazardly interlink to create strength and visual appeal. Much like a maze, Zig Zag (M) leads the eye to follow the cleverly designed pointed path. Smooth hand finished edges provide a premium look and feel welcome in any room daring to be a little bit different. Inspired by a striking lightning bolt, angular zig zags bring energy and dynamism to any interior. The geometric shapes of Zig Zag models E, K and T introduce a simple pattern and form into a room. These hand-finished radiators are designed to be eye catching and provide an opportunity to experiment with new shapes in the home. Traditional radiators limited to functionality can now have a life of their own and create a centre piece in any room. The Zig Zag collection from AEON is available in electric, hot water and dual fuel options. The vertical heated towel rail can be finished in either a polished or brushed stainless steel. 1500mm tall and 500mm wide, AEON valves are also available to complement the installation. The warranty on our AEON Collection is 10 years. Discover the AEON Collection at www.aeon.uk.com.

How Air Conditioning Works Mitsubishi Electric’s air conditioning systems use heat pump technology to provide heating, cooling and hot water where required. Our heat pumps require only a small amount of electricity to harvest, upgrade and move heat from one location to another. To achieve this a vapour compression cycle is used, which has the ability to move heat from one space to another. Low temperature heat from the environment can be increased to usable temperatures inside the building in the winter, or waste heat from a building can be moved outside in the summer, or even recovered in to hot water. The efficiency of a heat pump is known as the Coefficient of Performance or CoP (or Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) in cooling mode). This is a ratio of the heat delivered to power consumed. The operation of a heat pump is similar to a refrigerator. This process is known as the vapour compression cycle and the following is a more detailed explanation and example of the system delivering heat into a building. Cooling is the same, but the heat is taken from the inside and rejected to the outside.
1. Compression – Refrigerant vapour is raised in pressure and therefore temperature. 2. Condensing – This hot pressurised refrigerant vapour is then passed through a condenser, where it liquefies and gives off useable heat that can be delivered to a building by either air or water. 3. Expansion – Liquid refrigerant is then allowed to expand, which lowers its pressure. 4. Evaporation – The low pressure liquid then expands and absorbs naturally occurring heat from the environment (this can be from the air, water or ground) and in doing so changes back to a vapour, which is then passed to the compressor for the cycle to start again.

A sound effect on people – Ecophon’s acoustics podcast Acoustics, sound, noise. All impact our lives every day. Yet it is not a subject that is often discussed. Until now. Welcome to “A sound effect on people” a podcast series that explores how we are affected by sound and how poor acoustics can be harmful to your wellbeing. We all know that certain sounds can change the way we feel, but can we improve our lives simply by improving the acoustics of the rooms we are in? Our hearing is the one sense we can’t turn off, yet in evolutionary terms it is tuned for outdoor environments. But with many of us now spending up to 90% of our time indoors, we struggle when excessive noise and reverberant echo trigger our ancient fight or flight response. The physiological response to constant loud noise causes fatigue, stress and elevated heart rates, quite the opposite of what is needed for successful healing
or productive work. And if we cannot communicate effectively in schools, teaching will be ineffective and children’s attainment may suffer. In the office we know that some people like to work in quiet, while some feed off the buzz, so we should also explore the effect of personality on the way our bodies and minds respond to the noise that surrounds us. Ecophon are building a series of podcasts to follow discussing acoustics in healthcare, education and office environments; as well as broader topics including biophilia, physiological and psychological factors in office design, silence, creativity and the use of technology. A new podcast is released every month, and available via iTunes, Soundcloud or wherever you prefer to listen. Alternatively they can be listened to at www.ecophon.com/uk/podcast.

British Wool operates a central marketing system for UK fleece wool using a fully computerised auction system, with the aim of achieving the best possible net return for producers (farmers).
We are the only organisation in the world that collects, grades, sells and promotes fleece wool. We are also the only remaining agricultural commodity board in the UK.
We operate commercially, but we are also a non-profit making organisation, returning to producers the market price for their wool.
Day to day operations are run from our headquarters in Bradford. We also have smaller regional offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
British Wool welcomes enquiries from individual producers, or producer groups, who are interested in visiting Wool House. British Wool staff value the opportunity of meeting producers in Bradford and visitors usually find it interesting to learn more about Brtish Wool’s operation. Where possible visits are arranged to co-incide with an auction and also include a visit to see some processing. Growth of manufacturer recognised at national design impact awards Sealant and adhesive manufacturer Polyseam has achieved the ultimate design accolade for the rebrand of its GRAFT product range. The Yorkshire-headquartered company and its branding agency The Engine Room were both presented with a gold design impact trophy at the glittering DBA Design Effectiveness Awards in London. But the GRAFT project also went on to scoop the ultimate recognition of the evening when it was announced as the Grand Prix winner of winners at the end of the night. Since GRAFT’s launch in 2014, annual sales have increased by a staggering 744% and export levels have risen by more than £1million. In fact, this transformational business exercise has played a significant part in Polyseam now building a 50,000sqm factory which is expected to create a further 50 jobs by 2020. It was this bottom line impact that impressed the line-up of high-profile judges, which included Andy Palmer, CEO of
Aston Martin; Josh Berger, president and managing director of Warner Bros; and renowned entrepreneur Deborah Meaden. Commenting on the win, Polyseam’s marketing manager Olando Salina said: “The evolving challenges in the manufacturing market mean we must continually innovate to drive growth. We therefore focused on the development of an environmentally friendly, all-in-one adhesive and sealant created using our own in-house expertise. “This high-performance technology was already award-winning in its own right. But it didn’t achieve the traction we sought, which is why we engaged The Engine Room to help clarify our market position, overhaul the branding of this product range, and craft the communication materials we’d need moving forward. The Engine Room team has specific expertise in this field, and we were therefore delighted
when GRAFT was ‘born’. The project success is a testament to the collaboration of these forward-thinking business and design brains.” The Engine Room’s managing director Lesley Gulliver added: “The building, construction and manufacturing sectors are perhaps not renowned for their design prowess. But this project goes to show that strategic creative thinking is about much more than just what looks good. The overhaul of this product range and the development of the GRAFT brand has helped to revolutionise Polyseam’s entire business.” Polyseam has been independently manufacturing first-class brands for the majority of the world’s leading suppliers since 1993. The company manufactures more than 150 different products, and exports to 21 countries globally.

CRL teams up with Bellis Homes on the restoration of Grade II listed former convent CRL is working with Bellis Homes on the conversion of a Grade II listed former convent into 11 luxury apartments and detached house in North Barnet.
The construction insurance specialist was selected by the Essex-based upmarket luxury house builder to source structural defects warranties for the sympathetic conversion of Littleberries into stunning new homes. Littleberries Estate, a convent school run by the Sisters of Charity St Vincent between 1887 – 2007, is located within the Mill Hill Conservation Area and the North Barnet Area of Special Character in north London. Bellis Homes purchased the site with consent to convert the abandoned school house into 11 luxury apartments and to renovate the West Lodge, a single detached dilapidated building, into a three-bedroom house. The one, two and three bedroom apartments range in size between 1,800 sq ft – 4,000 sq ft. Bellis Homes has submitted a further planning application to provide roof terraces on several of the apartments which will offer spectacular views across the Mill Hill countryside. CRL was appointed at the beginning of the project to source a 10-year warranty certification to protect against any future structural issues. Mark Hedley, Business Manager for Bellis Homes, said: “In the past we worked with NHBC until one of our close contacts suggested that we should consider switching to CRL to source warranties for our developments.
“At the time, we had not worked with CRL before. However, it was their commitment to providing a high quality, flexible, competitively priced, customer focused service that gave us the confidence to work with a new intermediary. We have worked with CRL on six of our developments so far, including Littleberries.”
“The conversion of the existing heritage building meant the team at Bellis Homes has had a lot of restrictions placed on the build, we were able to take these into consideration and find a sustainable warranty solution that fitted our client’s specific requirements.
CRL were able to take the complexities of the conversion, including its Grade II listed status and the more unusual aspects of the build, and assist Bellis Homes in arranging appropriate cover that suited their requirements, allowing them to focus on the restoration.
“Our flexible approach meant that we could offer them a product that ticked all the boxes and that the developer will be able to pass on to their buyers. At CRL we pride ourselves in our appetite for adventure and work with a range of developers and housebuilders on interesting and unusual renovations and new builds.”
Other interesting features of the build include reinstating the shell and core of the original chapel, which is being converted into a five-bedroom house. Bellis Homes is also restoring the ceiling in the guilt rooms, removing the safes in the basement and rejuvenate the avenue leading to a temple in the grounds. Once the building work is complete in February 2018, the 10-year structural defects insurance warranties will be passed on to the new owners of the apartments and house. Mark added: “Working with CRL has been very straight forward. The inception of the policy is very efficient and negotiable, and the building, inspection and completion process is seamless.” Mark West, Senior Customer Relationship Manager at CRL, said: “Our flexible solution of arranging the policy is enabling plans for Littleberries to progress with the assurance of a warranty for the people who buy and move into this outstanding development.
Hampshire Trust Bank is providing Bellis Homes with the funding for this unique development. Glen Trees is the estate agent marketing Littleberries, property prices are yet to be published. Bellis Homes is a family run business specialising in upmarket luxury home builder, with over 40 years of experience in construction, developing and project managing. From London to the Home Counties, Bellis Homes specialises in selecting upmarket developments in some of the most sought-after locations. To view Littleberries visit www.bellishomes.co.uk. Also known as the Contract rail, the Ashdown 520 was the first rail we designed and still our most popular rail. Standing at 1250mm and 520mm wide it is available in both a polished and satin finish. Available in 3 formats across the range: central heating, duel fuel and electric only. It is now available in 4 widths: 300mm wide, 400mm wide, 520mm wide and 620mm wide in order to further utilize your spacing requirements whatever they may be. This highly popular rail works aesthetically in most bathrooms making it both versatile and practical. The bar configuration works well within the family bathroom and compared to a number of comparable rails within the market place our rail has 20 horizontal rails as opposed to the standard 16. This leads to a greater heat output and a more substantial visual impact. We specialize in stainless steel rails and all of our rails are manufactured from 100% stainless steel with the added practical advantage that they will not rust, flake or corrode meaning they can be utilized in all systems including open.
Manufacturing from stainless steel provides a long lasting, hard wearing product; small scratches can be polished out and it is easily maintained with water and a micro-fibre cloth. It is the ethical durable choice, manufactured from over 90% recyclable material and being 100% recyclable in itself. It is furthermore not subject to ecologically harmful plating processes. This all adds to the ecological impact of your development be it large or small. The recommended retail pricing for the Ashdown rails in central heating format is as follows: Ashdown 300 £269.95, Ashdown 400 £279.95, Ashdown 520 £299.98, Ashdown 620 £349.95 (all prices are ex VAT). For electric only format: Ashdown 300 £349.90, Ashdown 400 £359.90, Ashdown 520 £394.95, Ashdown 620 £455.90 (all prices are ex VAT). MATTERS Get The Right Size Hot Water Heating Unit & System To Fit The Site - Rinnai
New from Rinnai, the UK’s leader in continuous flow hot water heating, is a Site Sizing Service designed to give the right amount of hot water delivery to meet existing and planned needs. The new service initiative from Rinnai - available over email, iPhone and site visit - is to give contractors and users the right mix of products and system which fit the needs of the site, rather than a ‘one size fits all approach’ seen with need of the site or user and we have a proven traditional hot water heating systems. record of adding significant value to our customers. “Every site is different, as all installers know, and the tradition of oversizing a system ‘just in case’ is a very costly way for a site to have hot water on demand. The very basis of our product concept is that the end-user only pays for the fuel to heat the hot water at the point of use. There are very few sites that might need a stored hot water facility - but this is very expensive - its rather like keeping a car’s engine running just in case you want to drive it. It is as simple as that,” says Rinnai head of Operations, Chris Goggin. He adds, “We are inviting contractors, designers, installers, end-users and consultants to contact us in person to discuss their new installations so that we can recommend the right system specific to the site. Our product can cope with virtually any size of commercial site - hotels, hospitals, schools, office blocks and larger residential properties and we have proven systems configured to cope with the biggest commercial premises - right through to Government departments such as the Welsh Office or 350 plus bed hotels. The complete, bespoke and personalised system is designed for the specific
The Rinnai product range includes the Infinity HDC1600i, a premium condensing hot water heater tested to below 20 ppm NOx, producing the lowest emissions on the market, with 97% gross efficiencies. Also in this established and proven range of award winning products is the condensing HDC1200 internal and external models which give an energy performance of 107% net efficiency while the larger Rinnai HDC1500 internal and external models have 105% net efficiency. Rinnai Infinity condensing units also exceed all the demands of Part L Building Regulations. The Rinnai HD50i internal water heater and HD70e external water heater offer greater flexibility at the design stage and can offer an alternative solution where flue runs are problematic or internal space is not available. They are excellent units for refurbishment projects. Using a modular system of either internal or external Rinnai HD or HDC condensing water •75•
heaters and a stainless steel storage vessel, demands in excess of 20,000 litres per hour can be satisfied. Rinnai Infinity Plus Storage packs are delivered direct to site in one complete package. Rinnai units are ‘renewables ready’ when used as a gas booster to solar thermal or heat pump installations in maximizing renewable heat gains. It is the only booster that ensures a hot shower or bath any time of the day or night. The rest of the time the gas fired unit is inactive minimizing energy usage. Rinnai’s development and investment in integral smart controls for its appliances enable smart integration with sophisticated BMS systems allowing multi data monitoring which in turn identifies areas where energy, service and breakdown efficiencies can be improved. Each digital remote controller can be individually programmed, to deliver temperature accurate hot water for washing and cleaning however the water heater
can only deliver one set temperature at any time. Remote temperature controllers cannot override the master temperature setting made with the DIP switches within the heater ensuring safety. Controllers can also deliver basic fault diagnosis. Rinnai also fields a common header flue system to streamline manifolded installations of its award-winning Infinity condensing units. Another simple but effective idea which safeguards against lime scale build up occurring in Rinnai continuous flow water heaters a scale control system continually monitors the appliances for lime scale deposits around the heat exchanger. Also in the range is the Infinity Solo. This is a Rinnai hot water heating unit which combines the advanced technology of its wall mounted water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one. And it boasts very low heat loss figures.
