LONDON LUTON AIRPORT CONFIRMS CONTRACTORS ON £110MILLION TRANSFORMATION PROJECT McLaughlin & Harvey and Buckingham Group Contracting join Whitemountain as principal contractors on the airport’s redevelopment. London Luton Airport (LLA) has confirmed McLaughlin & Harvey, a UK-wide building and civil engineering company with headquarters in Northern Ireland, will be the principal contractor on an £51million project to redevelop and expand the airport terminal. LLA also confirmed Buckingham Group Contracting secured an £8million contract to construct a new 1,700 space multi-storey car park at the airport. Whitemountain was announced as the first principal contractor in November following a £12million tender to build a new bus interchange, improved drop-off facilities and airport road upgrade. Future development works to the airport’s taxiway network will also commence later this year with final completion in 2026. The contractors have been confirmed on the day the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP, visited London Luton Airport to mark the official ground-breaking of the combined £110million project. A recent report by independent consultancy Oxford Economics* predicts the works will add an extra 10,000 jobs and £1billion per year to the economy by 2030. The transformation now underway at LLA will not only significantly improve the experience for passengers, but also increase annual capacity by 50% from 12 million to 18 million passengers by 2020. LLA saw the fastest rate of passenger growth of all major London airports in 2015, up 16.9% in its busiest year on record. McLaughlin & Harvey, whose previous infrastructure experience includes projects at Aberdeen, Prestwick and George Best Belfast City airports, will be responsible for delivering the terminal redevelopment.

The work will see the internal layout significantly expanded and remodelled to increase capacity. When fully complete in 2017, the redevelopment will deliver: • • • • •

A brand new canopied entrance and exit plaza for protection against the weather. Expanded security search, baggage reclaim and immigration areas equipped with the latest technology for speedy passenger processing Double the amount of retail and dining space. A tendering process is underway for 47 units covering Luxury, Affordable Luxury, High Street and Food & Beverage brands Extra comfort and capacity with improved departure gates and a new passenger boarding pier Extensions of the airfield taxiways to improve operating efficiencies

Nick Barton, CEO of LLA, said: “The appointments of McLaughlin & Harvey and Buckingham Group Contracting, alongside Whitemountain, represent a significant milestone for LLA. With construction now well underway, passengers will quickly see the airport being transformed. “As the Transport Secretary made clear at today’s ground-breaking event, expansion at LLA is strategically vital to ensure that we can meet rapidly rising demand for air travel in the SouthEast. Our £110 million transformation is also set to give a huge boost to the local economy and will create thousands of new jobs for local people.” David Larmour, Construction Director at McLaughlin & Harvey, said: “McLaughlin & Harvey is delighted to have been awarded this prestigious contract in what is one of the UK’s top airports. The works, which are to meet the increased demand from passengers, will last approximately two years and will reorganise the existing facilities and add additional space to retail and airside passenger capacity.” Ian McSeveney, Managing Director Civil Engineering at Buckingham Group Contracting, said: “We are delighted to have secured this important aspect of the transformation at London Luton Airport. We are looking forward to working with the Airport Team and other contractors to deliver a scheme that will benefit passengers and support the creation of new jobs for local people”

Gus Robinson Developments Ltd celebrates early contract wins in 2016 GUS Robinson Developments Ltd is celebrating its 40th birthday with some early contract wins for 2016. Deals worth in excess of £13m have already been secured for 2016/17, and Managing Director Steve Bell says the firm is well positioned going into the final quarter of this current financial year. Now into its fifth decade, Gus Robinson Developments Ltd has been boosted by a streamlining of the business which has seen a strong focus on housebuilding over the last two years. Mr Bell added: “We have concentrated a great deal on housebuilding, and that is the key reason behind the positivity in the most recent set of results. “We are currently working on the new Centre for Independent Living in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council, as well as major refurbishment work within Middleton Grange Shopping Centre and a number of good quality housing projects across the North East. “They underline our capabilities working with local authorities and other public sector clients, as we strive to expand our order book by developing new relationships with both public and private partners.

“The backbone of our strong contracts in housebuilding has enabled us to broaden our horizons and be more profitable, and by shifting the focus we have strengthened the business across the board. The aim is to capitalise on our broad experience within all sectors.” Ongoing projects currently being worked on throughout the region by Gus Robinson Developments Ltd with Prince Bishop Homes, ISOS Housing Development, North Star Housing and Thirteen Group have seen continued growth over the last two years and leave the business well positioned going into the next financial year. He continued: “We have guaranteed contracts in the order book which suggest that by the end of March 2017 we could be approaching a turnover in excess of £20m. “The latest figures are slightly up on what we anticipated, everything is extremely positive and the mood is buoyant.” The success of the business over the last calendar year was reflected in the fact it was shortlisted for the fourth consecutive year by ‘Construction Excellence in the North East’ in their SME of the Year category, and reaccredited with a Big Tick in the ‘Business In The Community’ Responsible Business Awards.

ALPHA RAIL WINS CONTRACT TO SUPPLY PEDESTRIAN GUARDRAIL FOR ROAD WIDENING PROJECT IN NORTHERN IRELAND Kirkby in Ashfield based metal railings and gates manufacturer, Alpha Rail has supplied pedestrian guardrail for a £50m road widening scheme in Northern Ireland. The widening project involved upgrading a 3.5km stretch of carriageway on the A2 Shore Road between Jordanstown Road and Seapark to dual carriageway standard. Improvements also included four new roundabouts at Shore Avenue, Shorelands, Station Road Greenisland and Seapark junction.

Phil Ball, Alpha Rail Sales Director, Phil Ball said, “Over a threemonth period, Alpha Rail has supplied large quantities of various types of pedestrian guardrail to Maghera Fencing, who were appointed to manufacture and erect other security and industrial fencing systems on the project. The pedestrian guardrail was installed along kerbways to guide people on foot and cyclists to safe crossing points.” Commenting, Finbar McGilligan from Maghera Fencing said, said, “The work required to successfully deliver this major scheme had a significant impact on the local community so it was important that everyone involved in the project finished on time and within budget. The best thing about dealing with Alpha Rail was that they gave a date for delivery and stuck to it and this helped us to meet our project deadlines accordingly.” The A2 Shore Road is a vital link in the strategic road network between Belfast and Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland, carrying on average around 35,000 vehicles each day. GRAHAM Construction commenced works on the scheme in March 2013 and the new dual carriageway became fully operational in December 2015, when it was officially opened by The Northern Ireland Transport Minister, Michelle McIlveen.

Looking to Control the Temperature of Your Lobby? With a Boon Edam Heater it’s a Breeze! During periods of cold and windy weather, why allow the temperature in your lobby to drop? Just because it is chilly outside, doesn’t mean your reception area should be cold too. The revolving door has become a significant choice for many architects and facilities managers due to the way they naturally help to keep out draughts and reduce energy loss within a building. The cost saving decision to install a revolving door not only reduces your monthly energy bills but it is also more eco-friendly for the environment due to the reduced amount of hot air that leaves the building with every door rotation. Still feeling the cold? Why not consider adding a Boon Edam heater onto your door? On occasions when the weather is windy, cold air can sometimes become trapped within the seperate compartments of a revolving door and subsequently forced into an internal area, normally the reception area. By combining a Boon Edam heater with a revolving door system this cold air is negated and prevented from entering the building.

When installed, the main body of the heater unit is strategically mounted above the revolving door and using curved air outlets, creates a warm barrier around the inner opening of the doorway which counteracts any cold air infiltrating through the door. With the option to add a Boon Edam heater either from new or as a retrofit, we can ensure that your lobby area is kept at a comfortable climate at all times whilst not impacting on the aesthetics of your entry point. Not sure which heater to choose? At Boon Edam, we understand that our clients’ needs are as varied as they are which is why each of our heaters are created to match the curvature of each specific revolving door type. We are proud to offer a range of air curtains which can be made bespoke for all commercial, corporate or industrial requirements. For more details on the heating solutions offered by Boon Edam, please contact the Repairs and Retrofits team on 01233 505 900 or by emailing repairs@boonedam.co.uk

MOD announces TfL and Sport Relief release of 12 sites 2016 team up to get London moving for development In a move that will see £500M generated from the sale, the land will be used to build around 15,000 new homes as part of the government’s target to build 160,000 homes by the end of the decade. The 12 sites that will be sold are Kneller Hall in Twickenham; Claro and Deverell barracks in Ripon; RAF sites Molesworth and Alconbury in Cambridgeshire, and Mildenhall in Suffolk; Lodge Hill in Kent; Craigiehall in Edinburgh; HMS Nelson Wardroom in Portsmouth; Hullavington Airfield in Wiltshire; RAF Barnham in Suffolk, and MOD Feltham in London. The government plans to reinvest the money generated from the sales back into defence spending. The sale of the sites will be the first step in the MOD’s plan to reduce the size of its built estate by 30%. Its estate spans one per cent of all UK land and covers 452,000 hectares. As part of that plan, the Ministry has committed to generating £1 billion through land sales during this parliament and contributing up to 55,000 homes.

The partnership is encouraging staff, customers, schools and businesses to get involved in a range of fun activities to help raise money for people who are living in the UK in the world’s poorest communities. From 1 – 20 of March, Transport for London will pledge to “make their journey more active for Sport Relief”, sharing their activities on social media where daily spot prizes will be given for the best pledges. The activities can range from cycling once a day, to taking the stairs instead of the lift. Everyone is encouraged to get involved, whatever age or ability. TfL are also hosting a guided walk around the original Circle Tube line on Sunday 13 of March, with participants listening to a podcast of well-known Londoners talking about their favourite places on the Circle Line. There will also be free food and drink for those participating in the 14 mile walk. The following weekend, Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and at locations across the Capital will host three events which will give people the chance to walk, swim or cycle themselves proud.

Asset delivers AMP6 pumping chamber project Asset International, producer of Weholite large diameter plastic pipes, is set to deliver a large number of new AMP6 projects in order to help improve the water infrastructure of the UK. As a key player in the water management industry, one of the first projects Asset International have helped to implement is the upgrade of Heage pumping station in Derbyshire, which is owned by Severn Trent Water. Asset has a long history of delivering successful projects for all the UK water companies and were the natural choice for a project that came with a number of complexities, principally that space was extremely limited on site, with restricted storage capacity space for construction materials and waste. Additionally, the pumping station is adjacent to an area of ecological importance, and so green credentials were key. The refurbishment of the Heage works is being led by principal contractors Nomenca, who were charged with the role of upgrading existing facilities at the pumping station. Heage is just one of hundreds of pumping stations across the UK that will be undergoing remedial works as part of the AMP6 investment programme, as water companies look to update the country’s aged water infrastructure. Having previously worked with Asset on a number of projects, Matt Bates, Project Manager at Nomenca, knew that the site’s unique requirements could be met by Asset, whose innovative, approach to solving construction problems, by utilising modular techniques, appealed to the contractor. Part of what the site required was a wet well pumping chamber that could be lowered vertically into the ground, to a depth of approximately 4m, in one lift. To meet these conditions Asset manufactured a 3.5m diameter by 4m long chamber, which was prefabricated and tested at their Newport factory, before being delivered and installed on site in just a few hours. It is believed that adopting such an approach saved Nomenca almost a month on programme and as a result had a major reduction on associated costs. Additional benefits to the contractor were the reduced health and safety risks and environmental impacts. Matt Bates from Nomenca commented: “This contract at Heage SPS was a great example of Production Control. All parties from design, supplier, construction team and the client worked collaboratively to deliver success. The Weholite packaged pump station is the largest size that has been installed at present within STW and achieved the AMP6 goals of 30% quicker, 20% more efficient and 30% more productive. “NMCNomenca are promoting Weholite packaged station within the STW Framework to include both Infrastructure and NonInfrastructure work streams.” Shaun Kalies, Sales Director at Asset said: “Thanks to our superb design team and manufacturing expertise we are able to fabricate products off site and supply them in modular form so they can be installed safely and efficiently on site. This enables us to deliver one of our key client promises – better value. “We have worked with Nomenca and Severn Trent Water for many years. They have an innovative and forward thinking approach to project management and were early adopters of Weholite technology. We look forward to working with them throughout the ongoing AMP period.”

An urbanized study natural lighting and Ashton 6th Form College, located in Lancashire, has recently been awarded ‘Best Commercial Build’ at the Northern Design Awards for the design of their student centre.

T

he brief for the project was to create a hub for both dining and socialising, whilst also providing a connection between the main building and existing ICT suite to improve the student flow across campus. To achieve this, GA Studio architects designed an open plan layout with an airy and mature feel, creating a relaxed and informal dining atmosphere. The building itself includes a café, private study areas and a roof

top terrace, with the kitchen and ancillary spaces housed in simple block forms to the north of the building. The overall simple box form is made more complex by a series of cut outs and extractions, which create external terrace areas at both ground and first floor. Materials are utilised in their natural state with polished concrete and lacquered OSB combined with the exposed, industrial metals of the structure and services. The integration of such materials helped to create an urbanized and inspirational space for the students. Glazing Vision’s modular fixed

Flushglaze rooflight system was installed to harness large amounts of natural daylight; this was situated above the stairwell leading to the mezzanine level on the north side of the building. The large glazing product sits within the void, casting daylight into an area that would typically have been shadowed, providing a view of the sky whilst simultaneously creating an internal flow of space between floor levels. Each individual glazed section is supported structurally by aluminium back to back angles, which complement and enhance the contemporary style of the building’s interior.

space created with raw materials Externally the project build is just as aesthetically pleasing, surrounded by vertical bronze aluminium fins. These fins help to cast an array of different and unusual viewpoints for those indoors, whilst also providing visual interest to those passing by. Aside from the visual aspect, the aluminium fins help to provide shade and create privacy to the adjacent residences. Ultimately, GA Studio Architects have created a series of spaces inspired by both urban and street food culture; this carefully implemented theme resonates perfectly with the students and provides a unique location to both study and socialise. Whilst achieving their objective to improve student flow across campus, GA Studio Architects have also created a building that stands out as an architectural celebration in its own right. The range of tones and shade created by the aluminium fins, alongside the dramatic lighting via large areas of glazing, has contributed towards a building that fully deserves its award-winning title. Explore Offsite The Housing Sector 23 & 24 March 2016 –NEC, Birmingham

definitely has the potential to play a major role within the future of the industry.

The nation’s media have been reporting on a UK housing crisis for many months. George Osborne’s Autumn Statement promised to deliver 400,000 homes by 2020 and the industry needs to gear up in order to meet this deadline. It is unquestionable that further complacency in this area will result in spiralling house prices and rent rates, with the possibility of homelessness for the worst affected. For many, this crisis has already reached a state of urgency. A recent interim report from the London Housing Commission stresses the lack of action taken so far, with statistics highlighting how the trouble with housing has escalated. Buying a house in London is now out of reach for most, with the average house prices set at 10 times the average wage and the deposits set at around £70,000. For renters, the changes have risen by 16%, while weekly pay has only increased by 2%.

nationwide crisis has potential – the potential to change the norm which governs the way new homes are planned and constructed. Offsite construction brings with it the hope that the industry can beat Osborne’s deadline. Moving construction of housing offsite enables the build to take place both efficiently and economically, making the national shortage of labour less of a concern. There is significant evidence that suggests that the use of offsite construction has been successful in meeting the needs of significant housing developments at scale. In traditionally built homes, high energy bills make paying the above prices harder, but offsite construction facilitates the building of homes that are environmentally sustainable and airtight – a great benefit to housing associations.

The commission’s report notes that London needs 500,000 new homes to be built over the next decade - the statistics show that only 194,000 were built in the last one, posing the question how is the industry going to meet this challenge?

The recent news that the government are to release plots of land with planning consent to small developers should increase the quantity of planned new homes. Utilising offsite construction would speed up the build processes for these projects, as building offsite is not dependent upon environmental conditions.

For those in the construction industry with fresh ideas and technologies, this

40 YEARS IN THE FRAME Designing and creating bespoke picture frames - often for priceless masterpieces - has consumed the lives of Peter and Julia Ashley for the last 40 years.

Late 17th century Rococco inspired carved 24ct gilt frame with heavy relief decoration, centre and pierced corners.

Run by husband and wife team Peter and Julia Ashley, over the years they have framed two original Monets, several Lowrys, paintings by the Bloomsbury artists, (Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant) as well as the St Ives group of painters among many others. Initially based in London, they relocated to a larger workshop in Hampshire. From this base in Waterlooville, Peter and Julia run The Artistic Framing Company and lovingly complete projects for prominent art galleries and many independent artists. Peter said: “We love what we do. It’s hugely satisfying to take clients’ ideas and craft them into reality. Seeing our frames adorn a great piece of artwork still holds its thrills for us. And while it’s fantastic to make frames for prestigious large exhibitions we also thoroughly enjoy working with emerging artists.” The Artistic Framing Company hand-carve, gild and burnish frames to any size or specification. It also refurbishes antique frames and produces bespoke mirrors to commission. Its craftsmanship is currently on display at Messum’s Gallery, London, as part of Peter Brown’s “London” exhibition.

LED illuminated signs

rules for positioning and installation Written by: Pnina Kedar Feldman – International Sales and Business Development Manager at Vista System International

I

lluminated signs have b e e n a ro u n d s i n c e 1840. From the first Gas Lighting technique, through Light bulbs, Neon and Fluorescent tubes – illuminated signs enabled wider commercial applications. The introduction of the White Light LED (Light-Emitting Diode) in 1995, marked a significant revolution in the signage world. The developments in illumination techniques were followed by the plastics and polymers industries, contributing numerous new lighttranslucent substrates. Wide format printing on these new substrates became a matter of routine. Easy maintenance and graphics replacement meant that illuminated signs are here to stay. The luminous efficacy of LED compared with older illumination methods, proved irreplaceable. LED longevity, brightness and durability were thus adapted by the signage industry. Lighter, larger and more affordable illuminated signs were available to all. Vista System followed market trends and developed a backlit signage system illuminated first by neon and fluorescent, then shifting to LEDs. Today, Vista System offers sign professionals not one, but three different LED illuminated sign systems: Vista Light – using curved frame aluminum extrusions; Vista Verge – a flat frameless system using stretch fabric technology; and FLB – a flat, light aluminum light box with white translucent polycarbonate graphics substrate. Some important questions that arose during that evolution, were:

Q A

How does one determine the quantity / quality / color of LEDs needed per sign?

The first issue is the design and uniqueness of the product. Illuminated signs, apart from their obvious function as directional elements, are highly decorative. Tremendous resources are invested in creating the right graphics that will stand out and convey the message. The type of graphics dictate the color of LEDs used. The size of sign dictates the power of LEDs (W); how many LEDs per 1 meter; and how many lumens* units. The second issue is the ease and cost of maintenance. Since the invention of LEDs, maintenance fees, which have been an essential factor of pricing, spiraled downward as hardly any maintenance is required when using the cost-effective, long lasting LEDs. When large signs are sold, key factors would be location, exposure to the elements and ease of installation. Deciding which LEDs to use, depends on these factors. The third issue, and perhaps the first in the eyes of the customer, is the cost.

•28•

It is important to involve the customer in the decision making process. For example, although Vista System’s illuminated signage solutions are NOT considered custom made signs, thus their price is much more competitive and reasonable in comparison to bespoke signage solutions, the amount of LEDs required for a certain sign, as well as the amount of transformers and total electrical power, are key factors in setting the end price of a certain sign. Lastly, ease of installation is paramount. Vista System’s various illuminated signs can be easily installed and mounte. When LEDs are supplied with the sign, it is as simple as A,B,C. All that is left to do is plug it in and… voila! Vista System offers full support to the client who prefers purchasing the LEDs locally.

Q A

Where to position illuminated signs for maximum impact?

Once again, the wants and needs of the end user are key elements in taking that decision. The whole process begins and ends with the customer’s request. From a manufacturer standpoint, Vista System, asks for as many details as possible from its clients; size, location and feasibility of the entire project should be weighed and considered. If the end users’ is impossible, the sales person must verify the result is the best possible solution that actually works.

Q A

How can the installer make sure the sign has been mounted properly?

If all the previous elements have been taken into account, the installer should have installation drawings and specifications on how to mount the LEDs into place for maximum effect. If all above procedures were done properly, the installer’s job should be a very easy one: physically mounting the sign and illumination elements onto the required spot. it is fool proof!

Kitchens, bedrooms & bathrooms NOVELLINI SHOWER BASES –LEVEL ACCESS

With over 40 Years experience Novellini is the European and a World leader in the production and manufacture of Shower enclosures and trays, Baths, Whirlpools, Steam Enclosures and Wetroom solutions. In the last decade Novellini has made significant investments into environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and continues to strive towards ever more sustainable holistic production and distribution methods for the future.

Over the years Novellini has continually developed shower trays, being one of the first companies to offer fully engineered large format shower trays in a number of sizes and colours as either low profile or more conventional raised with legs trays - all from UK stock.

With the Olympic Plus shower tray - Novellini was one of the first manufacturers of large format shower trays to reintroduce the production of textured shower floor surfaces. For many years the Olympic shower tray by Novellini has been the only slip resistant (non- enamelled) product in the European bathroom market.

Novellini realised the importance of a more engineered shower tray from an early stage and pioneered the use of innovative materials and fabrication methods in the Olympic Plus shower tray, which today is still one of the strongest and most stable large format shower trays. The Metal reinforced composite construction, now also used in the new Custom tray, means that (unlike many low profile resin stone products), Novellini trays arrive On-site Flat and ready to install.

In recent years Novellini has developed the UK’s leading Wetroom and tanking product, with solutions to suit both timber and concrete installations. The Novellini Wetroom systems allow designers to create uncluttered, lowmaintenance, spacious, level access & fully tiled shower spaces

Kitchens, bedrooms & bathrooms NOW NOVELLINI’S LATEST TRAY BREAKTHROUGH –

CUSTOM

IN OR ON THE FLOOR –The Novellini Custom Tray can be installed on the floor as a low level conventional shower tray or placed directly onto joists to achieve a flush level-access solution without the need for any further fixing frames. (in addition a raised tray with a void for plumbing including legs is available for surface plumbing)

UK STOCK COLOURS AND SIZES – The Novellini Custom Tray is available in White, Grey, Black & Beige from UK Stock and there are 18 basic sizes – in addition each Custom Tray can be adjusted in Length by up to 200mm offering many more sizes than the basic 18.

ANTI-SLIP – The Novellini Custom Tray is available with an optional Factory applied genuine European standard, Certificated, Anti-slip which is applied to the top surface of the tray - leaving a 10cm Border around the edge so that any Silicone beading is applied to an easily cleaned gloss surface. EASY 2 CLEAN – The Novellini Custom tray IS easy to clean! The

materials used for the Custom shower tray are designed to be cleaned by conventional household bathroom cleaning products, including lime-scale cleaners and bleach. (The Anti-slip is a rough surface and will potentially hold grime and lime-scale – chemical cleaners will be required and unlike enamelled steel surfaces the materials used for the Custom Tray are not adversely affected.)

HIGH FLOW SHOWER WASTE – The Novellini Custom Tray has a specially designed shallow trap waste with a 50 litre/min flow rate. The Waste cover is completely flush with the surface of the shower tray, is easily removed for cleaning and is made from high grade stainless steel which, unlike a chromed waste cover, will not discolour or peel if in contact with bleach or lime-scale cleaning products. ROBUST – Novellini shower trays are built to last. Olympic and Custom

shower trays arrive On-site in their own individual secure packaging which protects them from most handling accidents, avoiding chips and knocks, (a fairly common problem with enamelled steel products). Thinking of building a big house extension or your own home in 2016? You aren’t alone! The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) published new research forecasting the main trends in UK housing design for the year ahead.

Over the course of 2015, RIBA Chartered Architects have reported the design trends in greatest demand: •

Sustainable and energy conservation measures demand for sustainable materials, advanced insulation products, water conservation and recycling features

Larger extensions and bigger new build bespoke houses

Adaptable designs - increased demand for homes that can make living easier for ageing occupants and live-in relatives

Family social hubs – multi-functional open-plan spaces are still highly desirable

An increase in land availability and the relaxation of planning restrictions have led to an increase of oneoff single houses and housing extensions. 55% of our Architects reported that bespoke homes and housing extensions are getting bigger in size. As the ageing population increases, more of us are planning ahead for later in life by seeking designs solutions to facilitate easier living. Adaptations to make independent living simpler, or adjusting a family home layout for the addition of an older family member are the two main drivers in this growing market.

RIBA heralds Housing Design

•42•

The popularity of generous multi-functional living spaces - combining cooking, dining and living space shows no sign of diminishing – when these spaces are combined with direct access to gardens and outside space, they are even more popular with 66% of our Architects reporting a demand. Sustainability and energy conservation are no longer niche concerns but factor prominently in the design decisions of many clients. 70% of our Architects expect to see an increase in specifying advanced insulation products and 66% expect to see a rise in the use of solar/PV panels. RIBA President Jane Duncan said: “The appetite for building or improving your own home for your family and future shows no sign of abating, with architects experiencing increased demand from creative and ambitious homeowners. This new RIBA report gives a glimpse of what to expect in housing design for 2016 and beyond. It shows the insight, value for money and peace of mind that an architect can bring to any housing project.” Find your own architect in 2016

The PerFecT Touch

E

stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. Originally called “A Touch of Brass”, the firm changed their name in 2003 in reaction to slowly advancing market changes in architectural ironmongery which is no longer supplied solely in brass, and to also reflect the broader range of products and finishes that they sell. In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Whatever finish you require, Touch can help you get the right look. Touch occupy their recently refurbished showroom at 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea, where they display a vast range of their 5,000 products. With a customer base including Interior Designers, Builders and individuals who are interested in the top end of the

Ironmongery market, Touch mainly supply to residential premises but hotel and office properties also contribute to their vast clientele. The company also have a healthy export market to all corners of the world, namely the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Touch’s owner and founder, Bill Benham, has 33 years’ experience in the ironmongery trade, as do his colleagues Jim Haselup and Alan Blanchard. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods

which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. Touch understand that keeping up with the fashion-shifts is imperative in order to provide every customer with the best solution for their requirements. Ironmongery can be a difficult and complicated aspect of a building project, as a result Touch aim to take this awkward aspect and make it user friendly and clear to understand by offering an onsite service where they carry out a detailed door by door, window by window, room by room Ironmongery schedule, highlighting all requirements and identifying any items that can be refurbished. Refurbishment is a large part of the business; Touch will undertake complete ironmongery refurbishment projects, and can restore old paint covered door furniture to their former glory, looking as new, at a fraction of the cost to replace.

The versatile choice for architectural design RMIG Expanded Metal is a light, versatile and attractive choice for building applications because of its aesthetic qualities and the creative freedom it offers. Expanded metal from RMIG has become increasingly popular among architects for its wide spectrum of aesthetic and functional advantages, and is often the ideal choice when working with materials such as concrete, steel and glass. It can be used for both practical and decorative purposes and it offers architects a new level of creative freedom when designing applications such as facade cladding, sun screens, ceilings, fencing and protective screening. The high strength and anti-skid qualities also make expanded metal the best choice for walkways, platforms and similar applications.

“Expanded metal is

made in one piece without joints or welds, which makes it ideal for forming, pressing and cutting.”

RMIG Expanded Metal has a modern yet timeless look, and creates the possibility of designing unique and eye-catching shapes and expressions – yet another reason why architects favour this versatile product. RMIG has its own production facilities for expanded metal where sheets are manufactured from, for example, aluminium or steel. The expansion of the metal takes place in one efficient production process. Expanded metal is made in one piece without joints or welds, which makes it ideal for forming, pressing and cutting. There is no metal lost in the process and, as expanded metal is also virtually maintenance-free, this increases the cost-effectiveness of the material. Combined with its high strength and outstanding anti-skid qualities, there are many valid reasons for using expanded metal.

9 ways to personalise your

platform lift So, you’ve decided that you’d like a lift in your home or property. Whilst the very purpose of a lift is highly functional, it can also be a great addition to the design of a property. Let’s take a look at 9 different ways a platform lift can be personalised to blend in, or stand out from its surroundings. 1. The most obvious way to make a dramatic change to the look of your lift is through glazing. You can choose either clear or frosted glass, to let light through the shaft and lighten the ambiance of the area. 2. In addition to glazing, you can also choose the colour of your lift shaft. A huge range of colours are available to complement the surrounding area. 3. It’s also possible to choose the flooring of the platform lift. You can use patterns, textures and even your own designs. 4. The lift console is available in different finishes, for example an oak effect, or stainless steel finish may work best with the environment. 5. Shaft walls can have design elements added through the use of printed stick on panels 6. LED coloured lighting recessed in the pit and shaft can be an effective and interesting effect, especially on glass panels. 7. You can choose the style of door design too, with a choice of glazed door, or solid door with vision panels. 8. As well as the visual design of your lift, you can personalise the use of your lift by choosing a manual or automatic door closure 9. You can also add restricted access to your lift. This is useful where the building is used by others, but the lift is for the use of a specified individual Hopefully, that has inspired you with ways you can truly make the lift your own. If there’s anything else you like to know, please give Invalifts a call and their friendly experts can guide you through the process of personalising your lift.

A Hat Trick of New Showrooms Launches for Yorkshire’s Distinctive Chesterfields The husband and wife team behind a Yorkshire-based furniture manufacturer recently celebrated the end of a successful 2015 and the beginning of what is expected to be an even more fruitful year ahead. Clare and Steve Laidlaw, the couple at the helm of Distinctive Chesterfields – situated in Honley, in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire – are thrilled to witness the continued expansion of the familyrun company, thanks to a hat trick of highs in the past year. The whirlwind year began with the launch of the company’s flagship chesterfield sofa firm – located at London’s St John’s Hill – at the end of June, 2015. With new staff on board – including a manager and assistant manager for the newly-opened London premises, it’s been onwards and upwards for Clare and Steve. Expanding the business into America, Australia and Japan and Sweden since founding just eight years ago, the couple recently saw the launch of a New York showroom to mark the second exciting milestone last year alone for Distinctive Chesterfields. Completing the trio of successes for 2015/2016, Clare, Steve and the company’s international sales manager, Mark Denby, are set to open a third showroom in the past year alone – this one in France. And with the company now employing well over 30 staff, 2016 looks likely to be another great year in terms of recruitment, too. After working hard to add to Distinctive Chesterfields’ evergrowing team, Clare and Steve are excited to see what 2016 has to offer. Speaking about the company’s achievements, Steve

had this to say: “The past year has been such a great one for us not just here in our Honley workshop and showroom, but across the Distinctive Chesterfields brand in general – that we really can’t wait to see what 2016 has in store for us all. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our staff, who continue to put their all into ensuring the very best quality pieces leave our workshop, as well as the many friends, customers and fellow businesses who have supported us so far.” The newly-opened showrooms give people in the respective area a chance to see the brand’s furniture for themselves, with each premises stocking everything from leather suites and sofas, to wing back chairs and footstools. “We can’t wait to meet everyone who’s planning to say hello at any of our newly-opened showrooms,” added Steve, “…and we’d be delighted to offer tempting discounts to anyone interested in making a purchase.” Of course, customers closer to Distinctive Chesterfields’ West Yorkshire showroom are still welcome to visit the brand in Yorkshire and browse furniture at a more convenient location. Chesterfields can also be viewed online at www.distinctivechesterfields.com For more about Distinctive Chesterfields, or to make an appointment to view its collection of handmade furniture, get in touch with Clare or Steve Laidlaw by calling 01484 663 294. tesa UK This is true across a variety of substrates used in furniture manufacture, including wood, MDF, acrylics, glass and many plastics. As a further reassurance about lasting performance tesa® 4952 is certified by the LGA Governmental Institution of Trade covering “the suitability of double-sided foam tape to fix mirrors on furniture surfaces”. The test included observation of performance in a climatised room and the creep strength of the product was extrapolated up to a period of ten years.

t

he use of tesa® 4952 doublesided tapes to provide high strength and immediate bonding of mirrors to furniture is helping manufacturers to satisfy consumer demand and improve their manufacturing processes at the same time. The increasing use of mirrors as an integral element of furniture design is not simply a product of the modern consumer’s vanity. Mirrors offer an added dimension to any room, strategic positioning will reflect light, enhance the colour values of the décor and open up space to create the illusion of a bigger room. The effect of placing a light source in front of a mirrored surface is to give it an added quality and a mirror next to or opposite a window gives the impression of adding another window to the room.

•66•

The good news for manufacturers is that the application of tesa® 4952 offers them a rapid, reliable and efficient element of the production process. At just 1.15mm thick and made of a medium strength PE foam, the recommendation is for 61cm2 of tape to be applied vertically per 1kg of glass. Whether on wardrobes, occasional furniture, dressing and vanity units or bathroom cabinets, the product will give high instant bonding strength and durability over time.

The use of tesa® 4952 also allows furniture manufacturers to provide the best aesthetic results, with the hidden bond offering designers clean, uncluttered lines free from any mechanical fixings. In an industry where cost-effectiveness in production goes hand-in-hand with contemporary design requirements, tesa’s solution meets both sets of requirements.
