Freedom Leisure lands five-site contract for the Forest of Dean Freedom Leisure has further bolstered its presence in Wales and south west England by securing the contract to manage five leisure centres in Gloucestershire.

The not-for-profit leisure operator will take charge of the sites from October, working in partnership with Forest of Dean District Council on the leisure facilities in the towns of Cinderford, Coleford, Lydney, Newent and Sedbury. The Forest Of Dean management contract comes hot on the heels of the 15 Powys centres in Wales that Freedom Leisure began managing in June, and brings the number of sites it manages to 52. From October, Freedom Leisure will start to implement a modernisation programme to improve various aspects of the Gloucestershire centres. A budget of around £1m has been set aside for the Forest of Dean and details of the improvement works are due to be announced soon.

We are extremely pleased to have been selected as the Forest of Dean District Council s leisure partner and look forward to working closely with the local communities to improve their leisure facilities, said Freedom Leisure managing director Ivan Horsfall Turner.

We understand that the five leisure centres are Freedom Leisure managing highly regarded by the director Ivan Horsfall Turner local community and our job is to maximise their potential and reward their loyal membership with updated and extended facilities and services.

Fitness First launches first invitation-only health club Fitness First Group has debuted its exclusive new health club concept, Gravity. The first Gravity club launched in Singapore earlier this month ‒ with designs by Nick Gray and Studio HBA ‒ while Fitness First is understood to have ambitions of bringing a marquee site to London at a later date. The US$7.3m (€6.5m, £4.7m) gym sits proudly at the top of the new CapitaGreen Tower in the Singapore Central Business District, offering spectacular views of Marina Bay and the Singapore cityscape. With a joining fee in the region of US$2,287 (€2,052, £1,500) and membership costing US$457 (€410, £300) per month, the invitation-only

proposition is targeted squarely at high-powered business executives.

The development marks the latest chapter in Fitness First Group s quest to move the brand up-market and diversify from mainstream gyms into new concepts that can be scaled up around the world. The gym group is currently in a transition phase with new CEO Oren Peleg taking over the reins from former chief Andrew Cosslett. The Singapore club s gym has a strong focus on personal training, with membership packages offering numerous 1:1 sessions and physiological analysis. In addition to top-of-the-range kit, there is an outdoor deck for a variety of al fresco

workouts. Also on site is an outdoor pool, a spa offering a wide range of treatments and a 6,500sq ft (604sq m) restaurant called Artemis which is scheduled to open in October. Gravity will champion holistic healthcare, with a range of visiting health practitioners offering specialist treatments such as personalised nutrition programmes, custom-made vitamin supplementation and a number of alternative therapies. A digital healthcare app has been developed to help members track their progress and schedule appointments for health treatments. The app also creates a closed community network exclusively for members.

Call for designers to inspire Londoners to get active Transport for London (TFL) has issued a public tender for a designer and supplier to create the next generation of Boris Bikes and inspire more Londoners to get active. Although the contract to supply bikes for London s public cycle network doesn t expire until 2017, TFL is already on the hunt for a new party to take on the job of designing, building, testing and supplying the next generation of bikes until 2027. Referred to by Londoners as Boris Bikes after the city s cycling mayor Boris Johnson, the current model is based on the Bixi bike, originally created by industrial designer Michel Dallaire. The winner of the tender will also be responsible for managing and maintaining this existing fleet of 10,000 bicycles. Cycling ‒ especially around the capital ‒ is seen as integral to boosting physical activity levels with £100m being spent on new schemes to boost biking participation in outer London boroughs.

The importance of design in fostering active populations has received renewed focus in recent months, after new research reinforced the long-held view that cities which strive to promote physical activity gain a significant economic advantage. Meanwhile, Richard Rogers ‒ the architect behind the Lloyd s of London building and the Millennium Dome ‒ is currently overseeing a parliamentary inquiry into how design in planning can affect behaviour change. The cross-party investigation aims to explore how the increased use of design in planning of the built environment could lead to positive behaviour change in local communities

Driv energy drink

Driv from Fanda labs is an 5 calorie energy drink designed to improve performance, accelerate recovery, and decrease brain fog, dry mouth and dry skin. Unlike most energy drinks, Driv does not contain caffeine, which can be dehydrating. Instead the drink uses a blend of natural ingredients, including a substantial two-gram dose of Bioenergy Ribose, a natural, clinically-proven 5-carbon sugar that your body uses to make adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the source of all cellular energy. Driv also replenishes magnesium, potassium and sodium, the important electrolytes lost through sweat. These minerals support good hydration, help regulate your blood s acidity, and support muscle and nerve function.

IdrinQ brain drink

IdrinQ is a new beverage which claims to the be the first of its kind. The drink is designed specifically for brain nutrition. It utilises a formulation which combines active ingredients L-Arginin and R(+)-alphalipoic acid, to help support cognitive performance. The team behind the development of IdrinQ found that as L-Arginin, R(+)-alpha-lipoic acid and vitamin B complex level became depleted it resulted in feeling of both fatigue and depression. By replenishing these missing components IdrinQ aims to support brain function enabling for regained focus.

Tea time is over: Sales down 22%

With the ovens warming in anticipation of the Great British Bake Off, new research from Mintel finds that Brits may be losing their thirst for the Great British Tea Time. Indeed, whilst over two thirds (69%) of tea drinking Brits agree that drinking tea is an important part of social occasions, over the past few years sales of the beverage have been in hot water. Across the tea retail market in the UK, value sales have fallen by 6% from £699 million in 2010 to an estimated £654 million in 2015. What s more, in volume terms over the same time period, sales have dropped by 22%, from 97 million kg to an estimated 76 million kg. Furthermore, Mintel forecasts that volume sales will drop to 68.7 million kg by 2020. The standard cup of tea is losing steam, with sales of ordinary teabags falling by 13% from £491 million in 2012 to £425 million in 2014. In comparison, sales of alternative teas have been going from strength to strength. Between 2012 and 2014, sales of fruit and herbal teabags rose by 31% from £58 million to £76 million, whilst sales of speciality teabags rose by 15% to £63 million and sales of green teabags increased by 50% to £36 million. • Between 2010 and 2015 tea retail sales in the UK have sunk by 22%, from 97 million kg to an estimated 76 million kg • 86% of tea drinkers say that tea is a good accompaniment to biscuits or cakes • 73% of tea drinkers say they typically drink it in the morning, compared to two thirds (66%) who drink it in the afternoon Mintel s research shows that many fruit and herbal tea drinkers believe in the mood enhancement qualities of these drinks with 43% agreeing they believe herbal teas can affect your mood. Meanwhile, 44% of green tea drinkers say they mainly drink these products for health benefits. In comparison, the top qualities that consumers associate with standard tea are traditional (60%), refreshing (43%) and comforting (42%). Emma Clifford, Senior Food and Drink Analyst at Mintel, said: Standard black tea is struggling to maintain consumers interest amid growing competition from other drinks ‒ held back by a rather uninspiring image. This has translated into the downfall of the tea category overall. Signalling that consumers are becoming more adventurous in their choice of tea is that sales of fruit or herbal teas, speciality teas and green tea continue to post impressive performances. Reflecting a growing foodie culture in the UK, people are branching away from standard teabags and towards these more interesting alternatives. What is more whilst tea is an established partner for biscuits and cakes, Mintel s research shows that falling sales in this area may be having repercussions on the tea market too. Indeed, UK volume sales of sweet biscuits fell from 451 million kg in 2009 to an estimated 413 million kg in 2014. Almost half (46%) of Brits who eat biscuits, cereal bars and crackers say they do so with a hot drink, yet two fifths (41%) say they don t eat sweet biscuits more often because they are high in sugar.

Choices Health Clubs breathes new life into derelict Lake District pool

having been closed for three years, said Choices Health Clubs director Duncan Foster. There was evidence of vandalism, broken windows and the building was a real eyesore in such a beautiful location. Being able to bring around this change is a fantastic feeling. Staying true to its aquatic roots, the 20,000sq ft (1,858sq m) site features a new pool, sauna, steamroom and Jacuzzi as part of the £39.99 per month proposition. The club s gym is kitted out with the Matrix 7xe Cardio range, with integrated screens and Virtual Active Software, as well as the Aura strength range. It also contains a large free weights zone and a range of functional training equipment, plus two exercise studios.

An abandoned community swimming pool has become an eyesore no more , thanks to an ambitious turnaround project led by family-run operator Choices Health Clubs. Troutbeck Bridge Swimming Pool in the Lake District, which closed in 2012 with the pool beyond repair, has benefited from a £500,000 investment as part of its relaunch as the mid-market Choices Health Club Windermere. When I first walked into this site it was in a real mess ‒

Watching the club grow from a building site into a premium full service health club has been an incredible experience and the word proud is an understatement of how I feel when I walk into work, added Choices Windermere general manager Andy Gray. I m looking forward to watching the club grow and deliver on its huge potential. The new site is Choices second opening of 2015 ‒ taking its national total of clubs to four. Foster told Health Club Management the firm remains committed to steady growth and is currently looking at a number of opportunities to further this over the next 12 to 18 months.

ID Card Supplies Access Control and Membership Cards

008 Editors Choice Fitness & Beauty Professional

The most important piece of equipment in your gym

A

ccess control, often an afterthought when setting out initial plans for a gym or fitness facility, but, looking towards the future, effective access control paired with the right membership management software package will retain more money in your business than any piece of equipment on the gym floor. As a provider of high quality access control and membership cards we are able to provide two of three elements that make for successful traffic control and facility security. The third element is a club management package that allows for easy integration of our hardware and a club or facilities database. Not only was it important to find a suitable partner that gave us the third element to our package, it was crucial they shared the same ideas and ethics when it came to business decisions and affordable pricing. In

2010 we began working with Club Manager Central. In the past 5 years we have been involved with countless projects together and managed to establish a slick and effective working relationship. Club Manager provide one of the most complete membership management packages available on the market today, also the system is being continuously updated in line with feedback from customer s insights into the day to day working of the system. We are now able to integrate all of our products with Club Manager completing our vision of providing the whole package to the market. Taking a closer look at the loss of revenue that can be seen when not having a complete verification and entrance security system in place, the impact it can have on a business is substantial. Take a club with 1000 members, all of which pay via direct debit @£35.00 PCM. If just 1% of the membership base is out of contract, missing direct

debit payments or using the club illegally stands to cost the club over £4,500.00 annually! We regularly install fully integrated turnstiles for around half of that cost, essentially allowing the systems to pay for themselves within the course of a few short months. A simple, smart investment into an access control system paired with an online database and management package eliminates the risk of members using the club illegally through verification before point of entry. When in place, the system retains a substantial amount of income every month and stops people from abusing the facilities. To discover how ID Card Supplies and Club Manager can help your business please visit our website www.idcardsupplies.co.uk, Email us via sales@idcardsupplies.co.uk or call the office on 01522 793053 and one of our team will be delighted to help with any enquiries.

Take control of weight issues by understanding Nutrition

Advice from CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine). Maintaining an ideal weight can be easily achievable by people who understand the powerful impact of nutrition upon every aspect of their health and appearance, and who have the knowledge to make the changes needed to their diet. Forget fad diets, weight-loss aids and punishing exercise routines. Knowledge is power!

Good nutrition is not about counting calories, but about making sure that every calorie counts in terms of nutrient density. By rebalancing your body to achieve better health, your ideal weight becomes attainable. No-one knows this better than Personal Trainer Keris Marsden from Fitter London and now Fitter Foods, who studied Naturopathic Nutrition at CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine). I tried every diet going says Keris, wasting hours counting calories and avoiding fat, and being misguided by food industry marketing.

Keris Marsden, Personal Trainer and Nutritional Therapist

Exercise helped me burn off calories so long as I spent hours in the gym. It was not until later when I researched in-depth nutrition courses available and went on to study Naturopathic Nutrition at CNM that I realised that nutrition has a bigger impact on body composition than exercise. My own health and fitness was transformed as a result. By making important nutritional changes in your diet, you will help yourself develop a toned, lean body with less exercise, with a better hip-waist ratio for women.

An in-depth understanding of the role as nutrition as medicine is useful for everyone. It also allows existing professionals, such as personal trainers, beauticians, chefs, masseurs or therapists, to provide an enhanced service which assists their clients health, appearance and wellbeing. There is no one-size-fits all when it comes to nutrition, so every client s needs are different.

CNM offers a range of courses in natural therapies. Those relating to the therapeutic use of food include a Diploma Course in Naturopathic Nutrition, suitable for those wishing to practice as Nutritional Therapists, and the brand new Natural Chef Training. Relevant CNM Short Courses include Nutrition for Everyday Living, Cooking for Health, and Juicing for Health. All CNM courses, ranging from Herbal Medicine to Acupuncture and Homeopathy, are based on a unique, holistic approach founded on the body s innate ability to heal itself if given the right conditions, such as good nutrition. CNM is the UK s largest training provider in a range of natural therapies, and has 10 colleges across the UK and Ireland, providing flexible study programmes. Courses available depend on location. Each college holds free-to-attend Open Evenings where you can find out more, plus some fascinating special events and health talks, so have a look at CNM s website to be inspired. Still on weighty issues, on 24th September at CNM London, Professor Tim Spector, author of The Diet Myth will be giving a public seminar on why a modern processed diet and antibiotics are a major cause of our current day epidemic of obesity and diabetes. For further information about CNM Courses and events, visit www.naturopathy-uk.com

I

t s common knowledge that athletic performance can decline with a very small amount of dehydration and losing two per cent of your body weight in fluid can decrease your performance by up to 25 per cent.

So whether you re an elite athlete or an amateur enthusiast, drinking water during training or on race day is essential if you want to get the most out of your exercise.

While many athletes turn to sports drinks for re-hydration, it s worth noting many are packed with sugar and hidden calories, which can hinder your overall training progress and achievement rather than aiding your long term sporting goals. But now there s a new mineral-rich drink on the market, which will meet all your rehydration needs. blk. from North America is the first ever fulvicenhanced, all natural mineral water. Its striking black colouration is the result of Canadian spring water being infused with fulvic minerals. The water contains no colouring, dye or additives and is 100 per cent natural. HOW IT WORKS

Fulvic acid helps water enter cells at a faster rate, leading to balanced hydration and mineral levels. The unique balance of chelated minerals helps fulvic acid enter cells quickly and increases enzyme activity.

Consuming fulvic acid helps support proper biochemical reactions and optimises cell response, resulting in an improved performance. The Fulvic mineral complex of blk. provides some of the most powerful electrolytes known to man, making blk. the only choice for fast, effective rehydration on the go.

Unlike other health drinks on the market, blk. contains no carbohydrates, calories, sodium, sugars or caffeine. This all natural drink contains an incredible 77 trace minerals from boron, which aids concentration, through to zinc, iron and germanium, known for their immune system enhancing properties.

Bums and Tums for Busy Mum s

Not everyone has the time or even the inclination to dedicate hours of their life to working out every week. Often the pull of seeing friends, meeting deadlines or simply taking time out to relax is stronger than the lure of exercise. But busy schedules are fast becoming a bad excuse. No longer just a secret for the supermodels to get their tummy s taut and toned, miha bodytec® and EMS training is making its move to the mainstream. Neither is its use limited to gym junkies as such technology opens exercise up to a brand new segment of society, providing fresh clientele for the next generation of personal trainers. All that is required with the system is one 20 minute session every seven days and yet this little ¬¬¬time out of one s week comes rich with rewards. So ground-breaking in its rapid effectiveness, miha bodytec® is making serious change and dispelling the old expression, no pain, no gain . The device triggers muscle growth via electronic impulses sent to the body which ensure in a unique way that 90% of muscle fibres are activated all at once, engaging muscles which otherwise do not voluntarily contract. The result is intensified calorie burning for the next couple of days; one can still be burning fat up to 72 hours after each session, something considered impossible with traditional exercise. Each workout can be tailored to your personal goals so miha bodytec® is perfect in tackling specific problem areas, building your body to be the way you had always dreamed. The absence of weights and the reliance on low-impact movements make working out suitable for even the oldest of generations too. In fact, the training has far less risk than that of traditional methods. It spares joints and strains muscles much less than when pumping heavy weights, always contracting slowly and progressively. EMS has everlasting health benefits and vastly improves therapeutic and rehabilitation options. Such technology is known to

alleviate back pain and improve body stability, gently restoring muscular balance in the torso area. It can also aid the recovery process of other muscle groups postinjury or surgery and is particularly beneficial to women post-pregnancy in strengthening pelvic-floor muscles. Miha bodytec® further offers an anti-cellulite programme scientifically proven to reduce the orange peel syndrome. Cellulite conditions are commonly caused by muscular atrophy, whereby layers of muscle that reside under fat stores become weak and undefined, causing skin to separate and create the lumps and dimples many women become familiar with. These muscles need to be stimulated quite powerfully for any sign of removal. So with miha bodytec®, electronic impulses treat deep below the skin s surface and tighten all connective tissues. This also enhances blood circulation, clearing out the body of its evil toxins and metabolic waste. The result is skin that appears softer and smoother and a newly instilled body confidence. Training with miha bodytec® offers an overall better quality of life where you finish feeling refreshed and invigorated. Leading to new levels of performance and endurance, EMS helps achieve a range of benefits from fat-free muscle mass to all-round better definition. For a method of exercise that is effective, time-efficient and totally sophisticated, try miha bodytec® to put your muscles to the test. Top 10 Reasons Your Business

It s easy to say that every company should have a staff gym. Many companies with a staff gym report employees exercising more often than ever. The question is; why is that good for business? This article explains a few of the reasons why your company could save money, become more productive and create a better working environment by taking a proactive approach to employee health and fitness. 1. Reduce Absenteeism

3. Cut Healthcare Costs

4. Exercise Increases Brain Power

The first and most obvious cost saving your company could see from the introduction of a staff health and fitness benefit scheme is a healthier workforce. Simply, people who exercise regularly are generally healthier than those who don t. As a result of being healthier they are less-susceptible to catching common illnesses, therefore taking less time off work and saving you money! A study by Aviva, found that 83% of companies who had added health and fitness benefits saw a decrease in sickness absence as a result.

In the US, where healthcare provision is a far more prevalent as a factor in employment contracts, a workforce that exercises regularly is an obvious cost saver. Even a company offering health and fitness benefits like a gym can have a significant impact on the cost incurred in healthcare provision. In the UK though, with an increasing number of companies offering private healthcare plans for employees it is in the best interest of the company to make sure staff are taking care of their health.

As we mentioned above, exercise can release hormones in the body which improve cognitive function. Scientists have shown that regular exercisers produce more of the chemicals that the brain needs to perform functions including multi-tasking, memory and problem solving. The same Aviva study which found evidence to show that investment in workforce health and fitness increases attendance showed that 89% of the companies, who introduced these benefits, also saw an increase in productivity.

2. Reduces Stress Stress and depression related issues are unfortunately a far too common cause of absence from work, especially in high pressure business environments. A recent survey by a UK gym chain found that relieving stress was one of the 4 most common reasons for going to the gym, alongside losing weight, building muscle and increasing fitness. That might be surprising, but the science of it speaks for itself. Working hard 9am-5pm, 5 days a week can be stressful and often this is caused by stress atrophies in the brain especially the hippocampus, which is partly responsible for memory (explaining why you tend to forget things when you re stressed). Raising the heart rate increases blood flow and relieves these, as well as releasing hormones like norepinephrine into the body that improve mood and brain function.

There are a whole host of reasons why installing a staff gym can have a positive impact on your company s productivity, we ve explained our favourites below!

Swedish research has found that a group who allocates 2.5 hours a week of work time to physical activity can sometimes yield the same level of productivity as an inactive group who continue working for 2.5 hours more.

s Needs a Staff Gym

Fitness & Beauty Professional 019

5. Increase Deep Sleep Time

7. Retention & Recruitment

9. Team Building

Another piece of the puzzle that is key to leading a healthy, happy, productive life is sleep. It is well known that the more deep sleep you can get during the night will help fend off stress, sickness and disease. But what people often don t realise is that there is a vital relationship between exercise and sleep. Studies have shown that competitive athletes exhibit more stable sleep patterns and that insomnia patients have seen their symptoms improve after introducing moderate intensity exercise to their treatment.

Obviously an on-site gym is a key part of the staff benefits programme for many employers and is seen by many employees as one of the great perks of their job.

Many fitness experts are adamant that working out as part of a team, or with a partner can make you less likely to quit, more motivated to train and more likely to achieve your goals. The gym can be a very social environment, especially where there may be group exercise sessions or in free weights areas where working in pairs is of benefit. It s likely that a portion of the gym users within your company would adopt this approach and form training groups and partnerships, either within their existing teams or with employees from other departments. This can help improve internal relationships as well as acting as something of a team building exercise.

6. More Motivated, Happy and Energetic Employees Again, exercise science backs up the theory that employees who exercise regularly have more energy when they are at work. They are normally more alert and less likely to be unproductive towards the end of the day or early in the morning because of fatigue. According to the NHS; even a single 15-minute walk can give you an energy boost, and the benefits increase with more frequent physical activity. Having more energy at work, combined with more sleep and improved brain function can kick start a positive cycle whereby employees are motivated to improve their performance. A study has also found there to be a causal link between happiness and productivity; a sample of happier individuals were found to be approximately 12% more productive than the control sample. The general working environment is a major factor in both the success of a company and the satisfaction of its employees. There is a variety of ways in which the presence of a staff gym can positively impact an organisation s working environment. We have touched on some of these below.

However, a staff gym as a retention tool works in a more important way than just being present in the employees mind of benefits they will lose if they decide to leave the company. When staff who have been part of a workplace fitness initiative are feeling better about themselves physically, mentally and performing better in their job it would be quite unusual for them to make the decision to leave, unless there were other factors at play. The same can be true at the other end of the opposite end of employment cycle, when trying to attract new employees! The presence of a staff gym or fitness centre can quite easily be the deciding factor for a prospective employee who is torn between 2 different job offers. It s not uncommon for someone to accept an offer for less money in favour of a friendlier, more positive and healthy work environment.

8. Job Satisfaction Retention is closely linked to the fact that fit and healthy employees, who are performing well and have low levels of stress, can be expected to have fairly high levels of job satisfaction. Obviously satisfaction is impacted upon by other variables, however it s perfectly fair to make the assumption that healthy, stress-free individuals who are productive, energetic and successful will be fairly pleased with what they are doing in their current job.

10. Company Image Offering staff health and fitness benefits, especially investing in a fitness centre or corporate gym can make a real statement about your company and the value it places on its most valuable asset; people. Investment in staff health and wellbeing can be a popular move internally amongst your staff and can also reflect well on the company if the investment is picked up by industry or local press.

My name is Jason Turner or JTPT and I have been a qualified PT for coming on 10 years now. My specialities are body conditioning and fitness coaching, I am 40 years old and I live and breath fitness.

Jason Turner

My journey in fitness started over 12 years ago, I was over weight drinking to much and generally unhappy with myself and my life. Then one day a friend said

wedowski

you need a hobby, come try the gym with me so I did, and for six months I hated it but kept on going. After a while I started to lose weight, build muscle and a nice frame, and the more results I saw the more I enjoyed it. I would see PTs in my local gym and remember saying to my friend

I could do that job, and

I could do it better

I guess after a while she had enough of hearing this and said to me then prove it . This gave me the encouragement I needed to contact my local college and enrol on a CYQ level 2 gym trainer qualification, and subsequently a level 3 PT qualification and have never looked back. For me, fitness and training is not just about the gym floor, we train outside in parks, on beaches and anywhere else we need to. I personally prefer to teach and train on smaller pieces of equipment such as Kettle Bells, TRX, Rings, Circuit Training, and Gymnastic style training, we mix this in with traditional weight training components and modern styles of CV training as well as boxing and fight training. I have a very healthy and growing PT business with two part time members of staff and a fully qualified Nutritionist, on top of this I also teach two Kettle Bell classes a week and boot camps. Myself and my staff are big fans of playing to a clients strengths and working to their goals, it s got to be fun and something the client wants to do, and more importantly, works, or what s the point! In fitness one size does not fit all, it s an individual experience and that what you get when you train with JT PT and the team...so it doesn t matter what you do or what your goals are, get your trainers on, dust off the push bike, get down to your local gym, pool, park, beach, or any other place you can think of and start keeping fit, and your machine that is your body will look after you, I promise. Stay fit guys and work hard. Check out www.jasonturnerpt.co.uk

Taking the social out of leisure Ten years ago, going to your local leisure centre meant swimming lessons. Trying not to breathe in the haze of talc, walking through break out seating areas of parents chatting, buzzing cafeterias and reception areas filled with sweaty gym goers having an after class natter. Fast forward to present day, it s a whole different picture.

In 2015, 93% of adults own a mobile phone (how are the others surviving?!). This statistic alone could be responsible for adults unresponsiveness to social interactions. Online relationships are replacing real ones; and once social spaces, are now streamlined to their core functions. This can dramatically affect business. In the instance of a 24 hour gym, users can sign up online, set up direct debits, check in through a touch screen system, book a class from their mobile and work out without actually saying a word to a single human being. Not only does this close the individual off to meeting others, it also means they are not supporting their local leisure centre that offers additional services such as a cafe, spa or extra evening events. With longer work days and our social time more important than ever before, is one of our key community meeting places being undermined by a mass addiction to screens and speed? This technological shift can be addressed with innovative ways to engage individuals back into the social aspect of the leisure industry. One way is to embrace the change through a well designed, interactive environment. Not interactive in the sense of touch screens and pushing buttons, interactive interiors create interactions between users. Interactive interiors are becoming more and more popular. Causing us to look up and notice something new, Designer or Architects are carefully planning and considering how to excite us. Innovations include; wow factor architecture, remodelling the reception area to reflect an updated brand image, or perhaps colourful breakout seating that catch your eye as you walk by, there are many ways to immerse and attract multiple audiences within one space. In the case of leisure centres, the addition of charging points, standing height tables for short encounters, and juice bars are all ways that the leisure industry is modernising. The technological age is not something we should fear, it should be welcomed bringing the prospect of new interiors and experiences within our day to day lives. There are so many resources and inspirations that are available online; it is the perfect opportunity to open up communication through the sharing of knowledge. So if there is one thing you change today, let it be looking up and smile at a stranger. You never know, your new best friend might be on the treadmill next to you. A study found that two percent of yoga participants experienced adverse effects during the sample period covering 39 years.

That was the conclusion of a recent report published in the American Journal of Epidemiology examining randomized controlled trials of yoga. The study, which aimed to determine the frequency of adverse events in the trials, was led by Dr. Holger Cramer of the University of DuisburgEssen. Cramer found that two percent of the yoga participants experienced adverse effects during the sample period from 1975-2014, which accounted for 94 randomized trials and included 8,430 participants. Some of the participants who experienced adverse events already had severe diseases, the report notes. Findings from this review indicate that yoga appears as safe as usual care and exercise, Cramer s abstract reads. The abstract said the adequate reporting of safety data in future randomized trials are crucial to conclusively judge yoga safety. Cramer identified 301 randomized controlled trials of yoga, but only 94 reported on adverse events. A widely circulated New York Times article from 2012, How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist William J. Broad raised concerns about yoga s safety.

Agapi Stassinopoulos joins Deepak Chopra as keynote at 2015 Global Wellness Summit

Author and speaker Agapi Stassinopoulos will join Dr. Deepak Chopra as a keynote speaker at the 2015 Global Wellness Summit, which takes place 13-15 November at the St. Regis Mexico City.

Stassinopoulos will share inspiration and insights from her book, Unbinding the Heart: A Dose of Greek Wisdom, Generosity, and Unconditional Love, and will also run two Thrive workshops based on her sister Arianna Huffington s book Thrive. It s a real honour to have Agapi join us at this year s Summit and to give our delegates a first-hand look at the power of her Thrive workshops, said Susie Ellis, chairman and CEO of the Global Wellness Summit. Summit organisers said the workshops are designed to provide tools to bring the principles of well-being into today s workplace, encouraging the ability to draw on our intuition, inner wisdom and sense of wonder, as well as our capacity for compassion and giving, so that, ultimately, we can live a meaningful life and thrive.

As we live and embrace the intelligence and power of our heart, and we share it for the benefit of others, we reveal the essential truth of our lives ‒ opening the doors to enhance our wellbeing, said Stassinopoulos. It is with great joy that I come to the Global Wellness Summit. I look forward to sharing ideas and insights with so many visionaries who care deeply about health and well-being, and to join forces to bring innovative, new tools to more people so we can help build a better world that is healthy, connected and thrives. Fellow keynoter Dr. Chopra said Stassinopoulos is an authentic, genuine, and inspirational writer and speaker who knows how to connect with and move her audience. She brings out the beauty, power, and independence in all of us.

Spa at Ramside opens with thermal suite and sleep sanctuary The Spa at Ramside in Durham, UK, has opened after an investment of £16m. It follows the creation of a second championship golf course in 2014 and a new wing of 47 bedrooms at the hotel, which opened earlier this year.

There is also be a rasul mud chamber on offer, plus a sleep sanctuary with soundwave therapy beds. Living Earth Crafts has supplied the treatment beds for the 14-treatment room facility ‒ designed by Mark Green of Curveline ‒ and Gharieni has supplied the loungers. Treatment products are by ESPA, Mii Cosmetics, Morgan Taylor and Salt of the Earth. Premier Software is the preferred software provider for this spa. Beauty treatments are provided in a beauty snug and hairdressing services will take place in a salon by Reef. The fitness suite at the spa will offer a programme of more than 40 classes every week. The interest we have already had in the spa has been phenomenal, said Jill Russell, spa director for the Spa at Ramside. We are so excited to be able to finally show off what is undoubtedly going to be one of the finest spas in the country. Owned by John Adamson, who is also the proprietor of Hardwick Hall in the north-east, this new spa at Ramside Hall Hotel has created 60 new jobs.

FIBO 2015 Breaks alltime Records 138,000 visitors descend on Cologne

FIBO 2015 welcomed a total of 138,000 visitors over four event days, recording another attendance increase of 22,000 visitors (19%) over last year. Altogether 725 exhibitors from 40 nations presented the latest fitness and health industry trends and innovations on a floor space of 130,000 m². Hans-Joachim Erbel, CEO of organiser Reed Exhibitions Deutschland, says: FIBO is among the leading trade fairs with the strongest growth momentum worldwide. The scale of this development is unparalleled in the international trade fair business In the span of only five years, FIBO managed to almost triple attendance and boost the number of exhibiting companies by nearly 50%. Back in 2010, when FIBO was staged in Essen, 53,000 visitors and 560 exhibitors attended the industry trade fair. Again this year, the altogether 58,000 tickets allocated to private visitors had already sold out before the show even started. FIBO Director Ralph Scholz, adds: The development of the fitness and health market continues with strong momentum and the industry is still on the up and up, as this year s FIBO helped to underscore More than nine million Germans hold gym memberships today, which is more than 11% of the total population and another 6% more than a year ago. More than 50 million people train in fitness and health facilities Europe-wide. And, as the economic trend index tallied at FIBO by an independent market research company confirms, prospects remain bright. The results showed that nearly 60% of surveyed companies expect business to continue to grow or grow strongly; only 11% forecast a slight business cool-down. The pronounced readiness to invest seen at FIBO matched those findings. Over 40% of trade visitors came to Cologne with concrete plans to invest. A third of them placed orders of 50,000 euros or more while the trade fair was still ongoing. And 6% of them closed deals valued at over half a million euros. This development was buoyed in equal parts by domestic German and foreign demand, as Marco Jakobs, sales director of Johnson Health Tech GmbH, emphasises: Massive numbers of both national and international customers and prospects frequented our stand, especially on the first two days. We are entirely satisfied with the outcome. In all, one in five trade visitors came from outside Germany, including the 320 leaders from 28 nations who participated in the 2nd European Health & Fitness Forum held in conjunction with FIBO. The next FIBO will take place at the Exhibition Centre Cologne from April 7th 2016.

Well-kept parks encourage activity, says study The research, Creating Places That Promote Physical Activity: Perceiving is Believing, discovered that adults and children alike prefer to visit and spend time in appealing places and avoid unappealing places with, for example, boarded up buildings, graffiti litter, heavy traffic and hiding places. Physical activity is affected by the design and maintenance of public spaces and people s perceptions of them, according to a new study from Active Living Research.

Parents perception of neighbourhood safety reflects children s activity levels. Naturalness is high on the priority list and children were found to be

more active in areas with vegetation. Regardless of socio-economic class, people are drawn to areas which are both aesthetically appealing and feel safe from both crime and traffic. The report says that to encourage communities to be active, it is important for parks to be orderly and well-maintained. Also, people like open, unobstructed views, sitting space, sculptures, food, water, deciduous trees, access to the street, play equipment and good lighting and pavements.

Brony hair: the new trend inspired by My Little Pony My Little Pony has been around since the Eighties, but the toy franchise isn t going out of fashion anytime soon. In fact, it has even kick-started a new celebrity hair trend. Brony hair is the latest style to take over Instagram. The look involves dyeing your locks the signature pastels and candy-coloured hues of the toy ponies, often mixing up different shades at the same time. Some stars, like Katy Perry and Kelly Osbourne, who is known for her violet crop, have been rocking the look for months, while others, such as model Georgia May Jagger, are new to the Brony scene. The daughter of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall took to Instagram earlier this week to unveil her new mermazing look, with a photo showing off her multitoned green, pink, purple and orange locks captioned Bronies with @alexbrownsell @bleachlondon Mermazing Hair colour. The UK fashionista has kept her roots natural and left sections of her long blond hair uncolored to keep things choppy.

Cara Delevingne was also spotted championing the look earlier this month when she stepped out with sugary pink hair. The actress turned out to be sporting a wig ̶ a good idea if you want to test out Brony hair without committing ̶ but her choice of color proved the trend is hot right now.

Brony hair could be a natural progression from Rainbow hair , the trend that has been sweeping the Internet all summer. Thanks to celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Kaley Cuoco, graduated ombré styles that involve leaving the roots their natural colour and adding flashes of pastel or fluo tones to the bottom half of your tresses have been big news. The concept is both fun and practical in terms of regrowth.

The Nordic natural cosmetics market benefits from ethical consumerism

The Nordic market for natural and organic cosmetics is showing healthy growth, with sales doubling between 2008 and 2014. A new study by Organic Monitor predicts sales revenues to climb to EUR 200 million in the coming years. Denmark has the largest market for natural cosmetics in the Nordic region. According to a recent report by Organic Monitor [1], natural and organic products comprise 4% of total cosmetic and personal care product sales in Denmark. The country also has very high market share for organic foods, 7%; the highest in the world. Danish consumers are high spenders on natural and organic products because of ethical and environmental concerns, explains the consulting and training firm. Widening availability is also driving market growth. Natural and organic cosmetics are making inroads in department stores, beauty retailers, supermarkets, drugstores and non-retail channels. However, health food shops still have the highest sales share. Although imported brands are highly established, Nordic brands are showing a rise in market share. The Danish company Urtekram has taken market leadership. It has a strong market position in all country markets partly because of its extensive product range and distribution. It was the first company to launch Cosmos-certified organic cosmetics in the region. It also has products with the Fairtrade and Nordic Swan labels. Organic Monitor finds green labels are becoming increasingly important in the Nordic region. Consumers are increasingly looking for logos and symbols that represent ethical and/or environmental attributes. The Nordic Swan is most established for personal care products, recognised by over 90% of consumers. Ethical labels will be featured in the upcoming Sustainable Cosmetics Summit Europe. Hosted in Paris on 21-23 October, at the Paris Marriott Champs-Elysées, an update will be given on the growing myriad of ethical labelling schemes for cosmetics & personal care products. Urtekram will be sharing its experiences with such labels at the summit.

Keystone completes acquisition of French company Centre 7 Keystone Industries nail polish division, Polychromatic, has acquired Centre 7, one of the leading suppliers of nail polish filling and other luxury cosmetic product services in the French market. Polychromatic, the nail polish division of the Keystone Industries portfolio of companies, and one of the founders of the gel polish technology, announced they have acquired French company Centre 7 (C7). Centre 7, located near Paris, in the Cosmetic Valley, has been in business for more than 20 years in the beauty and personal care industry. Centre 7 specializes in the filling and packaging of nail polish and other luxury cosmetic products. The dedicated team at Centre 7 is known for their high levels of quality control and customer service, vital characteristics which are the building blocks of Polychromatic s overall mission, says Keystone. With anticipated capacity of filling close to 30 million bottles annually, Keystone intends to grow Centre 7 as an ideal vendor for both bulk and packaged cosmetics. There are immediate plans to expand the facility for the full-scale production of nail polish. The acquisition will also give Polychromatic the Made in France quality advantage, and a closer proximity to larger French and European customers. According to Keystone, the Centre 7 plant has been audited by major cosmetic brands, and is rated to use flammable products, something that is difficult to obtain in Europe. The integration of Centre 7 allows Keystone s existing entities ̶ Keystone Research & Pharmaceutical and Polychromatic ‒ to leverage on a platform to showcase its R&D, technologies and services.

If your clients have cellulite

you need CellSonic! Around 90% of post-pubescent women suffer to some degree from this unsightly orange peel condition. And now ‒ at last ‒ there is a method of tackling it that is effective and proven and that will not leave your clients looking like they have been punched, pinched or pricked! What is this method? It s a machine called CellSonic and the technology it uses has been around in the medical world for almost 40 years, when scientists discovered how to smash kidney stones with the world s first non-invasive surgery. It s important to know this for two reasons; first, the technology has a medical pedigree that no product developed purely for the beauty industry can claim to have. Second, you and your clients are safe in the knowledge that this is proven technology and a proven machine when used according to the manufacturer s recommendations. CellSonic is an electro-hydraulic machine that propels Very Intense Pressure Pulses (VIPP) into the body and has a profoundly beneficial effect, both in terms of medical applications and now, in treating cellulite.

CellSonic works by stimulating the body to essentially heal itself by encouraging it to grow more capillaries. Better blood flow is especially important when treating cellulite in large areas like the back of the thighs and buttocks. Second, the body is stimulated by the intense and focused pressure pulses to grow more and stronger collagen fibres which become looser especially as we age. The result? Not only smoother and firmer skin with less dimpling in three months, but results that continue to improve , even after treatment has stopped. No other cellulite treatment is as effective or as long lasting. It s non-invasive, drugfree, has no side-effects and, significantly, is painless. A treatment can be done in a lunchhour, so there is no down-time. We recommend a course of 6 treatments over 12 weeks ‒ for results that continue to improve the condition long after treatment has finished. As if this was not good enough news in itself, a study produced in May this year by a sports physiotherapist in New Zealand, Dr Ken Craig, showed that treating athletes with the same miracle machine had a significant effect on the personal performance of those athletes.

A group of golfers and another group of weightlifters were given three weekly sessions with the CellSonic machine. No other alteration to their usual dietary and exercise regime was made. The results at the end of the test were remarkable. The golfers were striking the ball further, but their muscles were using less energy. The average improvement in each weightlifter s lifting capacity had gone up by an astonishing 11.2%. It was concluded that the muscles had actually changed in structure, making them stronger and more efficient. If CellSonic can achieve this result with athletes, imagine what it could do for your clients and their cellulite! For more information, go to www.cellsonicbeauty.co.uk or email us at

In the case of leisure centres, the addition

of charging points, standing height tables for short encounters, and juice bars are all ways that the leisure industry is modernising. L Occitane: a pivotal year The L Occitane Group published its results June last. Excellent results with a turnover of almost €1.2 billion, up by nearly 12% over the previous fiscal year. Growth, was delivered mainly by China, Japan, Hong Kong and Russia, the statement said. To note the growth of online sales of over 31 per cent. Finally, the operating margin will have almost reached 14 per cent, compared to 12.6 per cent last year. Figures that can only satisfy Reinold Geiger, owner/CEO and most of all the primary architect of the success of a Group that he took over in 1992. Explanations by Reinold Geiger. Reinold Geiger - You are right! It is amazing! But it is only the result of a great work in common of the 8,000 Group employees and of a distribution network of nearly 3,000 stores across 90 countries. Just like all great stories, it begins with a meeting, that of Olivier Baussan. This meeting took place in 1992. A few decades earlier, Olivier, a 23 years old literature student, was busy distilling essential oils from Provence plants: rosemary, cade, lavender and olives. At the time he used to sell his creations on local markets. In 1976, he partnered with the chemist Yves Millou to create the brand L Occitane . In 1977, Le Relais Occitane the first store of the brand opened in Manosque in the Alpes-deHaute-Provence department. In 1981 the first L Occitane factory opened in Provence in the town of Volx. Then in 1992 the first Paris store was inaugurated. The same year, the company opened its capital. I first invested in 1994 and then in 1996 in this company who as you may recall was on the verge of bankruptcy. In 1996 and 1997, we opened our first stores in New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo and started to develop the distribution network in France and abroad. Reinold Geiger - One of the strengths of the brands owned by the Group is their dedication to creating effective cosmetic formulas from naturally derived ingredients. Year after year, the R&D teams share this ambition, while also ensuring that they respect the values of the brand. From the sourcing of botanical ingredients to the extraction and characterization of active molecules and effectiveness tests on the skin, the R&D teams of the Group work together in perfect synergy to offer the very best of plants, and to guarantee optimal quality and traceability (from the harvesting site to the finished product). Pioneers in natural beauty care, our laboratories launched a cosmetogenomics programme in 2009, to demonstrate and validate the effectiveness of active ingredients at the heart of cells. With an innovative development department that is able to create over 400 innovative formulas per year, we are renowned for our skincare expertise.

Packaging Innovations has seen phenomenal growth since the show launched back in 2010, Alison Church The next edition of Packaging Innovations and Luxury Packaging will be held on 16 & 17 September 2015 at Olympia conference and exhibition centre in London. This expended edition will host more than 170 exhibitors. Details by Alison Church, Event Director.

Packaging Innovations has seen phenomenal growth since the show launched back in 2010. And of course, with the addition of Luxury Packaging in 2011, the event has since doubled in size over the years. The Business Design Centre Alison Church, Event Director served the event well in its infant years, but now that it has evolved to become the exclusive event for branded and inspirational packaging in the capital, we needed to find a new home that allows for continued growth. We are really excited to be holding the sixth edition in Olympia for the first time, to really provide an enhanced visitor experience. The Central and West Hall in Olympia is a new, beautiful modern venue. It provides extra floor space, as well as having the added benefit of being on one level, allowing visitors to move freely throughout the hall. This year we have over 170 exhibitors taking part. We have seen the attendance of the cosmetics industry grow over the years. In fact, the highest proportion of attendees in 2014 were from the cosmetics industry! This was due to providing specific content relevant for the cosmetics industry including hosting the Beauty Symposium which has grown in popularity each year. We have a wealth of innovative exhibitors taking part too who cater for the cosmetics market, including Miran, Quadpack, FlacoPharm, Print Park, Richmond Containers, Vesna, PET Power, Toly and Elanders to name but a few.
