Seepex cuts costs for Anglian Water Advanced Sludge Handling from Seepex, a case study to show how we can work with your engineers and supply companies to reduce capex and optimise equipment performance.

The storage silos hold the sludge at 25% ds and then feed the advanced digestion process as necessary with sludge mixed to 8-14% ds. The original design of the storage silos Seepex back-mixing pumps, however Seepex had experience of this application at other sites and the main contractor and to Anglian Water engineers which would save on both capital and operating costs. In place of augers with associated motors and level controls Seepex recommended installing silo pumps BTES from their open hopper range. designed to be installed within the base of a silo thereby eliminating the need for separate extraction screws. pump isolation and maintenance can be done by simply removing a small spool piece of pipework with a full silo if necessary.

zones. The pump mixes the sludge to 8-14% ds before pumping it to the advanced digestion plant. The system costs were reduced by removing augers and level controls from the silo discharge operation. Back mixing pumps from the BTEI range Anglian Water has recently developed three large central processing facilities to take dewatered sludge from satellite sites and to produce energy through advanced digestion systems. Seepex were consulted by Anglian Water at the design stage of the project and their experience with similar systems enabled considerable savings in both capital and operating costs to be made. As a result of this partnership, Seepex have supplied large backmixing and silo pumps at all three sites. The process starts with dewatered sludge cake arriving at each site with ds% varying between 20 and

digestion process is 8-14% and this is achieved in 2 stages. The incoming sludge cake conveyed from the reception bunker to Seepex backmixing pumps from the BTEI open hopper range. The pumps have large hoppers with integral bridge addition into these pumps together with a large pitch auger ensures a homogenous sludge with ds of 25% is pumped to the storage silos. Since the silos at one site are 90 metres distant from the reception area with a further 10 metre vertical lift to the top of the silo, a boundary layer injection system was suggested of a boundary layer into the pipe reduces the pressure losses thus enabling a smaller pump to be used and reducing capital costs.

Maintec 2015 24 - 26 March 2015 at the NEC, Birmingham

Maintec 2015 Secrets Unveiled Maintec 2015 boasts its strongest ever Business Exchange programme, on its return to Birmingham’s NEC on 24-26 March, for its 40th edition. The practical programme of seminars will feature 18 free content-rich talks packed full of advice, new innovations and case studies for visitors to learn from.

Experts from some of the biggest names in the industry will share their knowledge and experience at this year’s Business Exchange. For instance Dean Whittle, Training Manager at Reliability Maintenance Solutions will discuss how condition monitoring techniques can be utilised to improve the reliability of rotating machinery. He argues that condition monitoring alone does not improve the reliability of machines, and that there are skills and technology available to a condition monitoring engineer which can be utilised in order to improve reliability.

Kamran Gharachorlou from SMMT is using The Business Exchange to present ‘Can Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) Ever Be Successfully Implemented, Without Adopting the JIPM Approach?’ During his talk Gharachorlou will address three key points: Can TPM be implemented without having to fully adopt the JIPM approach? What is The JIPM

Stephen Donnan, EAM Application Specialist at Sapphire Systems will explore how technology can maximise organisational maturity and help go beyond simple asset management compliance. Donnan will look closely at the health of assets and will show why taking risks with assets in the long term could lead to burnout, increased downtime and capital expenditure. Those looking to discover more about asset management tools that can help with an organisation’s maturity will not want to miss this talk.

David Andrews, Senior Surveyor at General Surveyor Ltd will take a look at roof maintenance and the safety management on modern industrial and commercial roofs. During his talk Andrews will simplify roof maintenance and inspection management and show how to manage responsibilities through a straightforward task list diary.

Few would argue that mobile technology is a hot topic for the maintenance industry at the moment, changing the way workers can perform their roles. With this in mind Roy Rothwell, Senior Consultant at eMaint mobile technology on mission-critical assets. Rothwell will explain that along mobile CMMS helps organisations better manage maintenance on mission-critical assets, by improving the visibility of asset health and work performed, thus reducing downtime, providing real time updates and improving communication and safety. For those weighing up the CMMS options available, in his talk, David Hipkin, Group Managing Director at SoftSols Group, will outline the ‘Top 10 questions to ask in your CMMS search’

from the other methods? How can you select the right approach for your organisation?

In addition to The Business Exchange, Maintec 2015 will also feature The Business Strategy Forum, with educational sessions from expert speakers and major industry names. There will also be a full exhibition hall packed with international names and suppliers from right across the maintenance spectrum. Maintec 2015 is co-located with Facilities Management - the UK’s only event for the facilities industry outside London plus The Health & Safety Event and Easyfairs’ new show, Cleaning 2015, which is focused on buyers and suppliers from within the cleaning industry. Maintec attendees can attend all four shows through the one badge. To get your badge visit

Engineering for a healthier future By Nick Bassett - Lead Technologist, Biosciences. & Elaine Evans - Lead Technologist, Medicines & Healthcare

New cancer-beating drugs. MRSA-detecting biosensors. Digital systems for managing diabetes. Tissue-cell therapies that combat obesity. What do they have in common? All are groundbreaking British innovations that might never have seen the light of day without funding from a competition entitled the ‘Biomedical Catalyst’. Making the UK a life sciences leader Run jointly by the UK government’s agency, Innovate UK, and the Medical Research Council, the Biomedical Catalyst has awarded grants of £117 million to small and medium-sized enterprises plus £83 million to academics since launching in 2012. “The Biomedical Catalyst is part of the country’s vision to be a world leader in life sciences,” says Elaine Evans, manager of the competition. “It brings the best of two worlds together: the excellence of the UK’s academic sector and the entrepreneurial drive of British business.” Taking innovations to the next stage As Elaine’s fellow manager Nick Bassett explains, the competition is helping power innovation and businesses and academics can take their innovations to the next stage. In turn, the project successes impact positively on the UK’s economy.” Elaine continues: “The competition comprises three funding phases to match the early, middle and late stages of product development, and applicants can reapply for each. The Biomedical Catalyst supports companies and academics at every step.” Unlocking healthcare solutions However, the programme is about more than funding. Elaine and Nick also act as catalysts between people businesses and academics couldn’t achieve alone.” That’s not just good news for the UK’s economy; it’s great news for healthcare budgets and, ultimately, Catalyst helps us do just that.” Making the catalyst even better What next for the competition? “An independent evaluation is currently assessing ways we can improve the programme,” explains Elaine. “We’re also talking to stakeholders about what’s working well and what could be improved. These insights will make the competition even better at progressing innovation. It’s an exciting time.” For more information, visit (businesses) or translation/biomedical-catalyst (academics).

Conveniently Calibrate Plant Vacuum Gauges Why do vacuum gauges need to be calibrated? The largest uncertainty when using vacuum gauges on a process plant is knowing when the process has caused drift or shifts of calibration. Many processes handle vapours and, if any condensation or deposition happens, the chances are it will also happen in the vacuum gauge. Many such gauges Pirani, cold cathose and ion gauges - use thermal or ionisation cross-section measurements to infer the level of vacuum other hardware, all of which may be coated with by-products from the process. Even more rugged gauges such as capacitance manometers deposition will have mass and the gauge will weigh it, especially if it has a low range and therefore a very thin diaphragm. As processes move away from their design parameter due to gauge “drift”, little about the quality of the process can be inferred from the instrumentation readings, so diagnosis is down to a skilled operator recognising when a batch of product does not conform. This is too late! If the process is sensitive to the level of vacuum being achieved, then the cost of losing a batch could be astronomical - many times the cost of maintaining the plant properly in many cases. With the inherent lack of ruggedness of many vacuum gauges, it is imperative that plant gauges are regularly calibrated and that the operator has spare, calibrated gauges ready to substitute as soon as he fears the process may have drifted

calibrations due to the amount of hardware needed to establish a suitable level of vacuum in a situation where a calibration standard gauge may be compared. Not the least of concerns is the possible cross-contamination of the standard of access to many on-plant gauges. So it has become tradition for gauges to be removed regularly from the plant and shipped to an external calibration laboratory for re-calibration and, contamination. With the development of Chell’s on-site UKAS calibration service, they have developed CalCube both as a portable service but, for customers who would prefer their own facility, a convenient, tried and tested system. covers the design and use of vacuum calibration systems and incorporates an ISO/Dis stainless steel calibration chamber with geometry optimised to ensure that all gauges connected see the same level of vacuum so that comparisons may be made.

Having its own ISO IEC 17025:2005 accredited UKAS laboratory with the lowest uncertainties for Vacuum in the UK, Chell are well placed to prepare CalCube for on-site gauge calibrated in the laboratory both before and after an on-site the highest possible. type enclosure having just a 13A mains plug yet containing dry diaphragm backing and turbomolecular pumps with high vacuum isolation valves. Over 40 year’s experience of calibrating vacuum gauges have gone into CalCube’s design, which includes such capabilities as calibrating both rising and CMF valves. Fitting easily into almost any estate car, CalCube comes with lifting handles to aid safe removal from a vehicle or lifting up steps, etc. A removable side panel is foam lined with cut-outs to hold all the common mating vacuum connector systems - of course, custom connectors may be purchased and housed for Choice of vacuum Transfer Standards will be an important decision, which is aided by Chell’s years of experience. These calibration lab. for scheduled UKAS calibration. Chell’s in-house vacuum standards consist of three high-accuracy capacitance manometers having 20 years of continuous calibration history at national Standard level and these are monitored on a daily is also calibrated annually at National Standard level. At the atmospheric pressure end of the scale, the vacuum straight line generated by the capacitance manometers is calibrated against our 32” Schwien Merco-Master manometer giving us the lowest uncertainties in that pressure regime. Chell’s customers thus enjoy the accumulated vacuum calibration skills of over 40 years and, should they have CalCube to suit. For more information contact:Tel: 01692 500555 e-mail: Website:

Implementing a calibration system?

Our calibration and IT expertise helps you face calibration process improvement projects that are typically complex and consume a lot of time and resources. Only 20% to 30% of a calibration system upgrade is tools and technology, the rest is business culture and process. Therefore, the success of a new calibration system depends especially on the implementation of the system and the ability to define and adopt a new calibration process. We are the experts in both technology and implementation, so you can focus on the opportunities, while we support and guide you in the evolution of your calibration system and successful implementation of the calibration process change. Remote Controlled Mine-Seeking Boats Are A Model Of Consistency A design and prototyping company has successfully completed a meticulous project to produce accurate replicas of remote controlled boats used by the Royal Navy to detect and detonate underwater mines. tasked with recreating the very latest in subsea technology to help showcase the product to potential buyers around the world. The models were commissioned by Atlas Elektronik UK Ltd, a leading provider of science and technology solutions to the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Navy and a host of international defence organisations. Their latest product for countering the threat from naval mines is the ARCIMS, which recognises the presence of mines and is capable of destroying them, removing the need to have personnel in the area.

Ogle was given responsibility of building two accurate scale models of the equipment, one 40cm long and one 1m long, for use at exhibitions around the world.

“On the larger model the UUV mounting rig was hand made from Perspex and aluminium. The towed arrays themselves were turned on a machine lathe from solid
