Mace JV wins programme support for Tube revamp A joint venture between Mace and CPC Project Services is to provide programme support to London Underground on the upgrade of the District, Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City Lines. Modernisation (4LM), will renew the current signalling systems and bring in advanced automated train control across 40% of the underground network. Its investment to increase reliability and frequency of trains, forms part of LU’s wider £5.4bn investment in its sub-surface railway.

Steve Mole, Partner at CPC, said: “The CPC/Mace team will bring our expertise in leading the delivery of complex systems and projects in transport to 4LM. “We will work in partnership with London Underground and its supply chain to engage collaboratively and drive improvements to services and capacity for the tube.” The appointment extends a successful working relationship between Mace and CPC, who are already working together on Transport for London’s Tramlink programme and as part of joint delivery partner consortium for LU’s Crossrail and stations programme.

Mace and CPC will provide a review of the 4LM programme, develop an integrated programme and support 4LM’s leadership team with collaboration across the programme and look at how the programme partners are incentivised throughout the scheme. The initial commission will run for eight months. David Martin, programme director for Mace, said: “There are already some excellent partners on board and we’re looking to complement their skills, bring insight from our work on major programmes and help deliver this critical scheme for London’s transport network.”

London mayor approves 25,500-home west London plan A planning framework to deliver more than 25,500 new homes at Old Oak and Park Royal in West London has been approved by Mayor Boris Johnson. Old Oak is set to become a transport hub with both a High Speed 2 and Crossrail Station opened by 2026, The Mayor believes the site could create tens of thousands of new homes and provide almost 14% of Greater London’s employment needs up to 2031, with early estimates of a £7bn annual contribution to the UK economy. The Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation was launched in April and will drive the planning and regeneration of the site that straddles the London boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham, Brent and Ealing.

Earlier this year, the Mayor published an Opportunity Area Planning Framework for consultation, which sets out his long-term vision for the area. Following the conclusion of that consultation, the Mayor has now approved the document which sets the strategic planning direction for the area. Sir Edward Lister, deputy mayor for planning and chairman of the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation, said: “London urgently needs new homes and commercial space to meet its ever growing population and there can be no doubt that the regeneration of Old Oak represents a real opportunity to meet those needs. “This strategy will mean we can plan for the future of this vast site as we work to create a new, thriving and sustainable part of the capital, where people will love to live, work, play and visit.”

5 Real Reasons

TO CHOOSE STEAL We often get questions about comparisons of different materials. Very frequently the choice is between steel versus plastic or aluminum. Our choice at Lindab is, and has always been, steel. We will give you 5 real reasons to choose steel for your rainwater system rather than PVC or aluminum.

Most of these arguments go for all steel systems, but we think that we add even more to this fantastic material. We have been processing steel for more than 50 years and we buy over 200 000 tonnes of steel every year, so we feel that we know what we are doing. We also put our products through rigorous testing. 1. Steel has the lowest carbon footprint of all rainwater systems materials With steel you get a cost effective and environmental friendly installation that is 100 % recyclable. Our Rainline system is made from sheet steel, a raw material that has a natural place in today’s approach towards sustainability. 2. Steel stays in shape Virtually all materials are affected by differences in temperature and grows and shrinks as the weather changes. Compared to aluminum and plastic, steel has a lot smaller movement factor. This means that your installation is much more likely to last as connections other materials. 3. It’s really long lived of 70 years. To aid to the lifespan we rustproof the material with a 275 grams zinc coating. This gives the system a self-healing quality where scratches and cuts are automatically sealed by zinc ions that migrate to re-coat the uncovered steel.

4. Strong as steel Steel is the foundation of all modern construction, and there is a reason for that. Steel is strong. Snow, hail, falling tree branches and other circumstances can easily break a rainwater system made from aluminum or plastic materials. And even though we recommend that you are careful during the installation, a steel system is much more heavy duty than its competitors. 5. Steel is actually cheaper than plastic or aluminum The initial cost for a steel rainwater system is higher. We’re not saying that it’s not. But if you take into consideration the lifespan and maintenance needed for the respective systems, you actually save money. The lifecycle cost for a steel system is considerably lower than any other system out there. For more information contact Telephone 0121 585 2780 or E-mail: rainline@lindab.co.uk

looks at issues surrounding the prevention of thermal bridging in walls junctions. Cold bridges within the building envelope have a major impact on thermal efficiency and are especially critical in low energy and passive house buildings. If not eliminated, increasing the level of insulation will be a waste of time while moisture within walls will lead to mould growth, corrosion of metal substructures and thermal break needed but one that can support constant compressive loads without degrading. Modern design methods produce complex structures with challenging thermal bridging problems. As a result, Building Regulations have attempted to implement minimum design criteria for elements that are most susceptible. Part L Accredited Construction Details (ACDs) outline ways of designing junctions to minimise air leakage and an energy assessor can quickly establish thermal bridge (psi) values for use in heat loss calculations. Using accredited construction details (ACDs) which incorporate them, psi values have been calculated for wall

We’ve set the standard everyone else follows Once in a while a product comes along and changes everything, from the way it’s crafted to the way it works. Products are often copied and many are great ideas that never really see true success in their application. Many years are spent searching for a product that will ultimately surpass expectations, stand the test of time and become recognised as the leader in its field. We created one of those successful products nearly two decades ago and still today it has never been equalled. Why? Because we have never compromised on quality.
