TAILOR-MADE SERVICE The evolution of choice in building services with increasing variety in ceilings, ceiling grid models, styles and arrangements mean that the requirement for adapted and special designs has never been greater. Gilberts of Blackpool, Britain’s leading air movement specialist, has expanded its in-house design and fabrication facilities, enabling customers to have grille, louvre and terminal components made-tomeasure, in the UK. explains Senior Technical Manager Roy Jones. “So often, the customer needs a ventilation component that is maybe only a couple of solve a problem. “With many suppliers, getting that made is a major issue. The versatility of the service is demonstrated in an unusual application. Chester Zoo in creating its new orangutan enclosures wanted the ventilation to mirror air movement in the animals’ natural habitat of tropical rainforest, with air rising and blowing among the branches. AMAZING ACOUSTIC LIGHT FITTINGS

Improve acoustic comfort in areas where people work, live and meet - open-plan offices, auditoriums, restaurants, hotels and classrooms.

We have all sat in a café, assembly hall, or food court and the noise is unbearable. With the continuing trend for open services and solid ceilings it’s become more noticeable, and this is where acoustic-engineering is required. Lighting has long been recognised as an art, but combining these two disciplines from two creative specialists, Inox and Aco-shape, is something new. Premium acoustic foam with extremely high levels of sound absorption. Only recognised LEDs and drivers brands are used. They can adapt design and prove lighting levels using Relux light planning software. The foam starts out in 2x1mtr blocks shaped to suit a multitude of combinations of shape, colour, and texture. They are combining engineering, purpose, and design - bespoke collaborations are welcomed by them, so be creative! Typical Classroom case study on Inox.co.uk – a web site with a simple Acoustic value calculator Lighting Requirements: libraries, and classrooms, have to reach an illuminance level of 300lux. These areas should also have a uniformity ratio greater than 0.8, and a glare rating below 19. With selected luminaire we achieved 427 at 0.8 uniformity, and a UGR (glare) of 17. Acoustics: The maximum reverberation time for school buildings is dictated by the Building Bulletin 93 document for a Secondary school (general teaching area) the maximum times are:

With the selected luminaire we went from a bare-room acoustic value of 2s to 0.97s. Luminaires: Using a direct/indirect suspended linear luminaire, cased with the ‘BARCODE’ ‘Basotect absorption foam’ would create absorbers throughout the room. As recommended by the society of Light and Lighting

tp bennett: CitySport One of the largest sports facilities to be developed in central London is now open; tp bennett was the architect and interior designer

facility for City University London. The project is part of a wider mixeduse regeneration scheme for the University. Measuring 3289m2 (35,402 sq ft), CitySport is 80% larger than Saddlers Sports Centre, which it replaced, and incorporates a six-court, multi-purpose sports hall that is able to stage county standard badminton, basketball, indoor football, hockey, volleyball and netball events. tp bennett was originally appointed by City University London to complete a feasibility study and then worked together with developer Generation Estates to fully explore the site’s potential. At the time, it housed a redundant 1960s development, as well as Saddlers Sports Centre and two student residence blocks. The initial scheme sought to replace and update the existing sports centre as well as provide state-ofthe-art student accommodation. After further discussion, a broader strategy was developed to create accessible to the local residential and business communities. This was to work alongside new education space for the university as well as the new en-suite student residences.

The site was constrained on three sides by Goswell Road, Bastwick Street and Peartree Street; tp bennett’s challenge was to deliver onto the site while respecting the adjacent streetscape, and improving the public realm so that urban setting. The brief for CitySport was developed with Kevin Gibbons, Director of Property and Facilities at City University London and Alan Artus, Director of Generation Estates working alongside Bill Thompson, Head of Sport and Leisure at City University London, and Sport England. Bill Thompson, Head of Sport and Leisure at City, said: “CitySport has been designed to provide a local hub for sporting activities, with its large hall for team games, studios for wellbeing classes and

equipment. These fantastic facilities maximise the available space by combining great design with leading edge technology, making it one of the best university sports centres in the country.” Throughout the design phase, tp bennett overcame a number of a way to incorporate the county standard sports hall measuring 36 x 27m, which also needed to seat 400 people from concealed bleacher seating. It required 12m clear headroom to meet Sport England’s standards and in addition a large span structure over the top. tp bennett’s solution involved excavating the hall a full level into the ground. Bill Soper, Principal Director of tp bennett, said: “Our design approach recognises the important role to maintain City University London’s pre-imminence and enhance its market. The scheme relates harmoniously in its setting while still providing high quality, modern facilities for the university and the wider community.” The CitySport building also includes a separate team entrance that enables disabled sport person event to be staged there, as well as meeting space, exercise studios and As well as CitySport, tp bennett completed two student residential blocks which have been occupied since September 2014.

Materials and plants for his latest project come from the Cloudy Bay Discovery Garden, which won Silver-Gilt at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May. For his remix, Matthew decided to create and plant out large-scale circular beds raised high In correlation to Best Show Garden at Hampton Court Palace, inspired by the principle that water is life and needs to be recovered, he researched the culverts market for the best products to work with. Tubosider easily cut and shaped its products to 2600 to 1000mm in in diameter. Installing the whole garden took just two days, right on time for opening. “The culverts worked a treat and make For more information please email sales@tubosider.co.uk or call 01744 452900.

Abbotsford House Long Rake Spar supplied their market leading, specialist dried aggregates to Addagrip approved contractor The Fraser Bruce Group for their installment at Abbotsford House, Scotland. The project was completed using a 6mm Rhine Gold decorative aggregate to achieve a sustainable and SuDS compliant surface, which is both long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing. Abbotsford House has undergone a lottery funded restoration to both the internal and external areas of the property. As part of the overall restoration works, Addagrip approved contractor The Fraser Bruce Group carried out the installation of 6mm

Rhine Gold Terrabound Resin Surfacing at a depth of 18mm to the courtyard and garden pathways totalling 850m2. It was essential throughout the works that the aesthetics of the system were not compromised and the joints were kept to a minimum. The contractors had to follow a layout plan for positioning of the ‘day joints’ which was achieved despite battling with poor weather conditions throughout the period. The project was completed within a short time frame to allow the property to return to regular use as soon as possible and the client was highly appreciative of the work undertaken and the visual

Landscaping July 2015 Bridges Limited were appointed by Aberdeenshire Council to design, manufacture and install a replica of Ladies Bridge in a tidal location at Cruden Bay. The original bridge was constructed in 1922 following a fundraising drive led by local women and thereby named Ladies Bridge. Recently the bridge had been closed for months following concerns it would collapse following sever storm damage Local community groups were again involved in raising funds to secure a new bridge as it is a vital link to the beach and local businesses. CTS carried out a photographic and dimensional survey of the existing bridge and its support trestles. A new structural design was prepared to current design codes whilst maintaining the principles of the original structure.

Parapet detail to match style of original bridge

Cosmetically the new bridge adopts the distinctive diagonal paling arrangement for the parapets although the new parapet is not painted. The entire structure uses FSC accredited Ekki hardwood which is naturally durable and well suited to the coastal environment; omitting paint does not reduce the service life of the structure but removes a maintenance requirement.

The footbridge deck has FSC Ekki hardwood Hi-Grip Excel which has two nonslip strips of resin bauxite bonded into two grooves in each deck board. This provides a safe, slip resistant surface on the bridge deck. Hi-Grip Excel decking is manufactured by CTS Bridges Ltd and is available to purchase as a stand alone product.

BAXI COMMERCIAL BIOMASS PACKAGED PLANT SOLUTIONS Baxi Commercial enables Bernard Matthews to reduce energy use and carbon emissions through the supply of biomass packaged plant solutionsnear the heading like this When Bernard Matthews, the UK’s largest turkey producer, decided to upgrade its heating systems from LPG to a biomass solution as part of its carbon reduction and Baxi Commercial was chosen to deliver a prefabricated packaged plant solution. The project, which started in March 2014, will see Baxi Commercial install and commission 108 boiler houses by the end of 2014. Baxi Commercial supplied a full turnkey solution including groundworks and full M&E installation backed up with a longterm service agreement. Aside from substantial predicted fuel and carbon savings for Bernard improved environment for the birds. George Youngs, commercial manager of Green Energy at Bernard Matthews comments: “Our existing heating set-up of LPG spot heaters was proving to decided to embark on a project through upgrading the heating system to something more sustainable. “We’ve been pleased with Baxi Commercial’s involvement, and they have provided excellent communication and consulting throughout the entire process. “Due to the nature of our business, it was essential that the upgrade was completed within a two-day period, allowing our production process to continue as soon as possible. Baxi Commercial successfully met this demand through the supply of Packaged Plant Solutions, which were easy to install, reducing disruption on site.

“We expect to see a substantial reduction in energy consumption from the upgrade to biomass once the project is completed at the end of the year, translating into Andy Green, technical manager at Baxi Commercial, comments: “Due to the size and type of the business, we worked very closely with Bernard Matthews to ensure that we were able to deliver a service that met manner. solution, we were able to complete and deliver plant rooms readymade, enabling fast installation and reducing disruption. “Our involvement also extends into an ongoing service agreement, which will involve regular feedback on the systems to ensure they are running to optimum performance. “Reducing carbon emissions and energy costs is a priority for the food industry and upgrading heating

systems is one way to meet energy to be completed in quarter four of 2014, both Bernard Matthews and Baxi Commercial are looking forward to realising the total savings achieved through the upgrade. The project is also able to take advantage of the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) scheme. Pre-fabricated heating solutions are perfect for commercial applications where downtime and budgets are limited. The concept is easy and suitable for new and existing plant rooms, as the system will be delivered fully constructed and ready to install – prefabricated systems are essentially ‘drop and connect’ solutions. For larger industrial applications, adding modules enables solutions to be connected in a variety of plant with awkward access and layouts.
