Chancellor right to make Apprenticeship Levy more flexible, says FMB Currently 10% of Levy vouchers can be passed down through the supply chain from large firms to smaller firms and today, he increased this to 25%

T

he Chancellor is right to make the Apprenticeship Levy more flexible, so that it works for strategic industries such as the construction sector, but his reforms have not gone far enough, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Responding to the Chancellor’s speech at the Conservative Party Conference, Brian Berry, chief executive of the FMB, said: “The Chancellor has, in part, listened to the concerns of business by making the Apprenticeship Levy more flexible. However, he needs to go much further. Currently 10% of Levy vouchers can be passed down through the supply chain from large firms to smaller firms and today, he increased this to 25%. This is important as in construction, it’s the small firms that do the bulk of the training while the large firms don’t tend to directly employ or train tradespeople. Since the Apprenticeship Levy was introduced last year, apprenticeship starts have fallen in the construction trades by more than 10%. Given that the construction industry is already suffering from an acute skills shortage, this is very worrying indeed. If the Chancellor is serious about ensuring the Levy has the desired effect, and increases meaningful training across Bouygues UK returned to profit last year after all sectors, it should go further and make 100% of the reorganising the business and implementing a vouchers transferable from large to small companies.”

Bouygues UK back in profit after two years of losses

strict selective bidding policy.

The French contractor’s UK building business returned a £8.6m pre-tax profit after suffering a loss of more than £78m in 2016, on top of a loss of £19.5m in the previous year. The recovery plan delivered an operating margin of 1.2% on revenue up 7% to £597m. This uplift in turnover was due in part to the consolidation of the Thomas Vale subsidiary last Summer, which completed the absorption of its regional building contractors like Denne and Leadbitter into the core Bouygues UK business. During the year the business suffered a strong cash outflow, which saw the French parent inject a further £26m of new equity to strengthen the group’s financial position. Chairwoman Fabienne Viala said: “Despite ongoing challenging market conditions, the company has returned to profitability during 2017, while maintaining a high level of quality and service towards our clients.” She said the turnaround was down to increased selectivity, with more recently won projects now contributing positively to operating profit and the outcome of a group-wide reorganisation plan and strategy that led to significant savings and high productivity.

Fusion joins British Safety Council Offsite manufacturer of light gauge steel panelised superstructures Fusion Building Systems, has become a Member of the British Safety Council – a national organisation dedicated to making sure no one is injured at work. Fusion’s membership supports a business aspiration to achieve industry-leading health and safety standards and performance levels, setting a benchmark for the offsite construction sector as a whole. As a Member, Fusion will be able to access the latest health and safety information, stay up to date on all legislative changes and utilise the training resources made available for employees, with the aim of achieving a positive and proactive health and safety culture right across the business. David Bayliss, Fusion Health & Safety Manager, said: “Robust health and safety procedures are important for any business, but in construction, the risks could be considered more severe. We operate across varying environments; offices, a manufacturing facility, transportation and on live construction sites, so need to be sure we’re working to best practice guidelines at all times for the safety of our own employees, as well as those they’re working with.

Government pledges 5-day payment for small firms Small to medium-sized firms are being promised five-day payment terms from Government as part of a fresh push to stamp out late payment. The move to pay 90% of undisputed invoices from SMEs within five days, comes as the Government tries to reboot its late payment measures with a call for evidence on the best way to tackle the scourge once and for all. Among the latest measures being looked at are forcing company boards to have a non-executive direc tor responsible for prompt payment performance and empowering trade bodies to highlight the best and worst practices in payment behaviour. Small Business Commissioner Paul Uppal will join the Prompt Payment Code’s Compliance Board to try and reassert its relevance to industry. Further reform to the Code is to be considered including whether the small business commissioner should have a greater role in its administration.

06

The Government call for evidence will be open until 29 November and the government is encouraging, businesses, trade associations and other interested parties such as academics to contribute their views to it.

“We aspire to be industry-leading in our health and safety standards and our Membership of the British Safety Council will help us on our way to achieving this. All employees will benefit from the online resources which are made available to them and our commitment to working safely will continue to form part of our supply chain partner agreements.” Fusion’s health and safety record over the past seven years is already significantly better than average for the manufacturing facility and is industry-leading onsite. The Company also holds accreditations with CHAS (Contractors Health & Safety Assessment Scheme), BOPAS (Build Offsite Property Insurance Scheme), ISO9001, ISO14001, and is a member of industry bodies including the SCI (Steel Construction Institute). David continued: “Our membership of the British Safety Council is further evidence of how we’re developing as a business and how we’re working to improve standards not only in offsite manufacturing, but across the wider construction industry.”

Hidden Homeless Competition Awards Architects

The competition, Hidden Homeless, head by the Horizon Youth Centre, Camden, and supported by the Mayor of London, challenged designers and architects to propose radical ideas for innovative housing for homeless young people across the capital.

‘Stepping Stones’ by Morris + Company was awarded first prize with RCKa and CATJA DE HAAS Architects awarded second and third prizes. ADAM KHAN ARCHITECTS received a special mention. London’s housing crisis is forcing the most vulnerable onto the streets. The Hidden Homeless competition tackles this issue head-on.

08

John McAslan, Executive Chairman of John McAslan + Partners, added: “Young people are the hidden face of homelessness, often sofa-surfing or sleeping on buses, in transient housing or shelters. The winning mixed use scheme for the Hidden Homeless competition by one of the UK’s most impressive architects demonstrates an imaginative and pragmatic approach to this challenging project.”

The design ideas competition, organised by Colander Associates, called for proposals providing short and medium-term accommodation for up to 28 homeless 16-21 year olds, including dormitories, shared living accommodation, cultural and retail space, as well as a private development opportunity (either commercial or private housing) which can co-exist with the homeless facility, providing financial viability and ensuring the homeless are an integral part of their community.

Acoustic Board System

The growing homeless crisis urgently needs to be addressed from a political, social, and planning policy perspective. Housing benefit cuts, insufficient supply of affordable housing, and cuts in council funding and mental health services have left vulnerable people with nowhere to go.

Ecophon Strengthens Its Solo Offer Ecophon has launched the latest extensions to Ecophon Solo™, its market leading family of free hanging acoustic panels. The new additions to the already extensive product portfolio of versatile acoustic absorbers provide architects and designers with even greater choice and creative freedom.

10

October 2018 Commercial Design Launched as the first acoustic cloud to the market almost ten years ago, Ecophon Solo™ is a design-friendly, free-hanging sound absorber that due to its versatility can be installed in virtually any space. The Solo range features panels in a variety of standard shapes including square, rectangular and circles while Solo Freedom allows designers to express themselves creatively with custom shapes and colours. The latest expansion of the range introduces larger sizes, integrated luminaries and new baffle designs. The innovative glass wool core used in Ecophon panels provides a lightweight, stable solution that is strong and rigid regardless of the size or shape. This makes it possible for Ecophon to produce uniquely large panels. This is seen in the newly launched 3000x1200 mm rectangle the largest on the market - and the 2400 x 600 thin rectangle. Ecophon’s Connect Profile and accessories makes installation simple and means that even the largest size panels are quick to fit on site. The expanded Solo offering now also offers a combined lighting and sound absorption option. The Ecophon Line™ luminaire, one of three normally only available in the Ecophon Focus™ range, has now been integrated in the 2400x1200 mm Solo panel. Solo Rectangle Line is delivered with the opal integrated in the panel so installation is as simple

as hanging the panel, adding the included luminaire and connecting into the lighting system. Following the recent growth in the architectural popularity of baffles, Ecophon have taken their offer to the next level with Ecophon Solo™ Baffle Wave and Ecophon Solo™ Baffle ZigZag, innovative shapes designed to complement the traditional straight edge baffle. Furthermore, due to the growing recognition of the importance of adding sound absorbers to walls, Ecophon has also added Solo™ Baffle on Wall to the

product family. This simple change allows an architect to continue the baffle design onto the walls, making an aesthetic statement while creating an even better sound environment. Ecophon recognises that often, either as part of the design or due to a lack of ceiling height, Solo may need to be installed close to the soffit. To make this simple, Ecophon has developed a new, simple, direct fixing solution which makes it possible to easily install the Solo panels as close as 50 mm from the soffit. Will Jones, Marketing Manager at Ecophon said: “The design of interior spaces has a huge effect on people’s experience, so architects need the freedom to design with solutions that not only deliver the required acoustic performance but also complement and even enhance the design of a space. “The new products and updates to the Solo range strengthen our offer and mean we have the widest range of freehanging absorbers on the market. Since we launched the original system it has become a favourite among architects and we are proud to still be building on what we started almost a decade ago.” For more information about the Ecophon Solo™ range visit www.ecophon.com/thenewsolo

The rise of airspace Airspace is a phrase increasingly heard in property development circles, especially in London and other large cities, where limited development space and an ever increasing demand for housing forces the solution to go upwards. By definition, airspace is the unused space on top of residential, public and commercial buildings, which developers can purchase the “airspace rights” for from local councils, housing associations and private freehold property owners, for the construction of apartments. The primary benefit is that it is allowing architects and investors to plan developments in areas, which appear to have reached saturation point, and where no further development land is available. It is giving people the option to choose to live in the areas that they actually want to. From an environmental perspective, it also means less need for greenbelt land to be sacrificed to satisfy the demand for new homes.

12

“There’s an estimated £54 billion worth of roof space in London,” says Haroon Bhatti, investment director of London-based development firm Apex Housing Group. A report produced by his company, calculated that rooftops could provide the space for 180,000

extra homes across London, and this is without even taking into account the amount of space that is above commercial buildings, such as supermarkets and warehouses. From a practical perspective, developing airspace is more complex than traditional forms of construction and this is where off-site modular construction comes into its own. Notably, most modular superstructures can be installed in a number of hours, greatly reducing disruption to local residents already in situ within the building. Other benefits include the superior thermal properties of modular construction materials, especially useful when intended to be used on an exposed rooftop. Just as importantly, modular elements are more lightweight, therefore reducing load on an existing structure. With a considered design approach, they can become striking enhancements to the original building.

rpa:group was recently appointed as Lead Designer on the creation of four new apartments in London’s upmarket South West suburb of Putney. The collection of luxury one and twobedroom apartments are specified to meticulous standards, boasting contemporary design and a high specification throughout. Our experience in airspace extends beyond residential, with the renovation and extension of an hotel in South London for our client Holiday Inn Express, which included the creation of a fifth storey; adding a further 24 bedrooms. Clearly airspace is something that we will continue to see on the rise, with more industrious and creative solutions becoming increasingly available as design, materials and the environmental needs of people continue to evolve. www.therpagroup.com

Roofs for conversion are often higher than surrounding structures, with the potential for terraces offering commanding views. As a result, they can be ideal for the creation of penthouses, catering for the high-end market, which in turn offers developers a higher return on investment. This is a good thing, considering that building into airspace is more expensive than building at ground level, so rooftop development works in locations with high density and high returns. A benefit to existing residents is that part of the developer’s obligation is usually to refurbish the building’s exterior and communal areas, which can see an overall uplift in value of their own properties as a result.

Making Waves at Rossall Coastal Defence Ecology Park Three bridges with unique ‘wave’ style parapets were installed by CTS Bridges Ltd in the Mythic Coast inspired Ecology Park as part of the Rossall Coastal Protection Scheme. Artist Stephen Broadbent of Broadbent Studios was responsible for the design of the ecology park and his concept for the bridges required the parapets to have a wave effect made from hardwood spindles. CTS worked with Balfour Beatty and Broadbent Studios to develop the design into a buildable solution for the three bridges. Twelve spindles formed one wave effect and each of the ekki hardwood spindles were cut from a larger timber section to achieve the exact shape required. Once cut they were numbered prior to being methodically fitted by our joiners.

The Ekki hardwood deck has Hi-Grip Excel non-slip inserts to provide a slip resistant surface on the multi use bridges. The three bridges were manufactured by CTS at their factory in Huddersfield prior to being delivered and installed on site in time for the opening of the Coastal Flood Defence scheme carried out by Balfour Beatty for Wyre Council in partnership with the Environment Agency. ‘Plastic’ replaces iron pipework at historic landmark Eco friendly and thermal-efficient plastic pipe technology has been used to replace aged cast iron hot water pipes showing signs of corrosion in Edinburgh Castle’s Crown Square.

T

he square, which dates back to the 15th century, is located outside the Royal Palace, and now benefits from a pre-insulated Flexalen pipe system supplied by Glenrothes-based Flexenergy. Surveyors investigating a leak in Castle Square found a defective section of iron pipework in the heating network serving the Queen Anne building. During the attempted repair programme, other sections of pipe were found to be corroding so the decision was taken to replace the entire section of flow and return pipes.

16

The flexibility of the Flexenergy product meant that much of the pipework could be prefabricated before being brought to site, which was important because of the space-constrained nature of the location. The pipe was then fusion-welded together to take account of the numerous bends in the heating network.

As Flexenergy’s Sales Director, Sandy Fairley explains: “Flexalen was ideal for this particular project as it is lightweight, highly flexible, very thermally efficient, recyclable and offers a much more enduring solution than equivalent iron or steel pipe network in this type of environment. “It was also very pleasing from a company perspective to be able to contribute to a more sustainable future at one of Scotland’s most historic settings.” Flexenergy is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of pre-fabricated and pre-insulated polybutene pipe for heating and hot water distribution systems and supplied a total of 80 metres of its Flexalen 600 pipe technology to complete the Castle Square project. www.flexenergy.co.uk

Vivalda’s managing director, Ben Jayes

Vivalda Welcomes Brokenshire Ban on Combustibles Vivalda, the UK’s largest distributor and fabricator of architectural cladding systems, has welcomed the Government’s intention to ban the use of combustible materials on all high-rise developments. Announced by housing minister James Brokenshire at the Conservative Party Conference, the new building regulations will be introduced for external wall systems banning plastics, wood and other products that include combustible materials found in some aluminium composite panel systems. However, Vivalda’s managing director, Ben Jayes (pictured), is calling for further clarification on whether the ban would apply to any material in wall construction from the internal face of the wall through to its external face, as first proposed. He said: “For months now, we’ve been calling for a much more robust approach from the regulators, who should treat all proposed cladding systems as a single, integrated product;

not a group of unrelated sub-components. For this reason, we decided last year to supply only A1 and A2 products to all high-rise building projects. The devil is certainly in the detail where complex cladding systems are concerned. Specifiers and contractors want clear and robust guidance on cladding safety – that’s why we’re pushing for the regs to include complete systems, fixings, insulation and all.” “A total ban on all combustible materials on high rise developments is still the gold standard for which we’re lobbying. Whatever the government concludes on this issue, we think the industry needs to take action and set new, unrivalled standards of building quality for all cladding systems used on tall buildings.”

Case Study October 2018

UK Infrastructure project teams energised by quality temporary facilities. Infrastructure will be a key driver of construction activity in the UK over the next few years. Major projects such as HS2, Thames Tideway and Hinkley Point C plus other nuclear power stations with further road, rail and water projects are anticipated to provide growth of over 12% in 2018/ 2019. Premier Modular Ltd have seen this upward trend and have taken the opportunity to work in partnership with some key contractors and consultants to

18

deliver some exciting projects over the last couple of years. Premier’s exceptional customer service and innovative quality products provide comfortable and efficient workplaces, meaning it has become one of the UK’s premier suppliers of modular building solutions. Premier demonstrated its capability to deliver a modular solution on a massive scale,

focusing on innovation balanced with standardisation as well as ensuring value for money by providing a series of modular complexes at Hinkley Point C in Somerset, comprising 38,000 m2 of offices and welfare facilities, to house personnel during the construction phase. The HPC requirement for the best temporary welfare and office facilities in the UK was a challenge Premier met and achieved. Off the back of this valuable experience several buildings were supplied for Thames Tideway as office and welfare accommodation on both a hire and purchase basis

dependent on site timescales. The core drivers were to deliver a cost effective solution whilst upholding the ethos and brand of the project. Premier were chosen for their ability to deliver a solution within budget coupled with their experience of working on sites with complex logistics as the modules had to be delivered to site by barge down the River Thames. With the project team’s comfort and efficiency at the forefront of mind, Premier was selected to work on the enabling phases of HS2 Phase 1 in London. The provision of a four storey office and welfare facility on the Euston

station site was the start of a great relationship with Costain Skanska as they endeavour to put the infrastructure in place to support this huge project. Premier puts great value on forming strong, mutually beneficial client relationships and looks forward to working with Costain and other contractors on future HS2 projects In providing a solution that suits the client’s unique demands, the flexible and innovative Premier Modular has developed a solid reputation for focusing on attention-to-detail, quality and longevity of the products it delivers – resulting in the company gaining recognition from award bodies in 2018. This included the North West Regional Construction Awards where St Margaret’s CofE Primary School gained a ‘Highly Commended’ for the Integration and Collaborative Working Award as well as winning the Digital Construction Category. This project is now a finalist in the Constructing Excellence National Awards again in the Digital Construction Category.

The complete package: The latest laminations from VEKA with a full spectrum of support Industry-leading systems supplier VEKA Group has added another string to its bow, for the benefit of fabricators and installers. The Burnley-based PVC-U giant now offers perfectly colour-matched laminated mouldings. And, for a year that has seen the window systems supplier increase its ex-stock offering to 16 combinations, from its 29-strong Variations colour collection, and launch the Imagine BiFold Door in Grey Base; this latest piece of news that VEKA has created a simple (and fast) supply solution for matching laminated mouldings, further proves the company’s commitment that its customers’ success is integral its own. Marketing Director Dawn Stockell explains: “VEKA Group continues to make significant investment in our lamination department for the benefit of our customers. We know that this is one of the fastest growing areas of our industry, and laminated product currently makes up 39% of VEKA and Halo profile sales, which is well above the industry average. “We’ve partnered with Allied Profiles to create a comprehensive laminated moulding offering that perfectly complements all the colours in our Variations range. This makes for the ideal professional finish to any project. Customers can order online for direct deliveries, so there’s no need to visit a trade counter and, obviously, no longer any need to spray mouldings during fabrication.” The significant investment in lamination by VEKA Group was announced earlier in the year as part of a £5M budget allocated for plant and machinery, which included acquiring a building adjacent to the existing VEKA HQ; increasing the former 380,000 sq ft site by a further 40,000 sq ft and expanding lamination capacity by a staggering 50%.

As a large, and long-established company, VEKA is proud to be light footed and adaptable to changing market trends. As such, as the last few years has seen demand grow drastically in specific areas, VEKA has, in turn, stepped up to the plate by adding Anthracite Grey

Smooth to its ex-stock list this summer, as well as Cream to the Vertical Slider in both VEKA and Halo systems. The increased lamination capacity though, doesn’t just speed up production and output of the more popular tonal trends, it also means VEKA can respond to smaller runs, and ‘quirkier’ orders faster; getting the profile to fabricators more quickly, so that installers can complete jobs efficiently.

When it comes to colour, providing products that fit the bill is just beginning, and each VEKA order also comes with a full spectrum of support from start to finish, as Dawn explains: “Here at VEKA, we go above and beyond to offer a level of support that is unsurpassed in the industry, from marketing materials and guarantees, to sales support, technical advice and much, much more. This is just another example of the team demonstrating our

partnership approach in trying to make every aspect of our customers’ working days a little easier. “In the face of a relatively flat market, VEKA is proud to be part of a Group that will continue to invest in order to see our partners succeed. This year’s investment in plant and machinery is not only about increasing the potential volume of our output, but more importantly, supporting customers with flexibility and efficient service. This means

that they can further build their businesses upon our reputation, and provide an equally flexible and efficient level of service to delight their customers, be they homeowners or commercial specifiers.” Call 01282 716611 or email salesenquiry@veka.com to order a brochure and learn more about laminated mouldings, including pricing, lead times and technical spec.

Schueco’s outward-opening window viewed as ‘go-to’ solution Originally launched in 2014, the AWS 70 SC outward-opening aluminium window from Schueco UK delivers Schueco’s renowned ‘build quality’ at an economical price, a formula that has led to it being widely specified for domestic projects right across the country. Its versatility and excellent performance in use means that many specifiers now view the Schueco AWS 70 SC window as the ‘goto’ solution for projects where high quality is paramount but budgets are tight. The Q Mark product certification that it was awarded in 2017 has further boosted its popularity. The system is now widely specified for new and replacement windows in homes and apartments, light commercial buildings, local authority properties, schools, hospitals and clinics. Design and compatibility with Schueco ADS 70 doors adds to its visual and practical appeal. With a depth of 70 mm, slim sightlines from 63.5 mm (outer frame/vent) and a choice of five vent profiles offering optimum cost/size/weight options, Schueco AWS 70 SC is ideal for punched openings, ribbon windows and curtain walling. The system can accommodate double- or tripleglazed units and achieves a typical ‘U’ value of 1.6 W/m2K with 1.0 W/m2K glazing units, which makes it compliant with Document L. In addition, a WER up to ‘A’ is an option. Fittings include a choice of standard or heavyduty stainless-steel friction hinges, together with multipoint locking for large vents. The window has opening limiters and with a PAS 24 rating, offers a high level of security. There is a projecting sill option and profiles may be specified with different colours on the inside and outside faces. 90o and variable-angle connections mean that the Schueco AWS 70 SC system can easily accommodate bay windows.

Healthcare fire safety and the Shelton Hospital tragedy Wrightstyle is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of advanced steel and aluminium glazing systems. Jane Embury, the company’s marketing director, looks at fire safety in healthcare facilities and care homes. We’re shortly to supply to a new state-of-the-art care village in Warwick that will include everything from a deluxe cinema to a spa, café and cycle track. It’s a prestigious project because the facility will specialise in the care of dementia sufferers, a distressing condition that adds to security and safety challenges, both for staff and the building’s design. It’s also a reminder that care homes and healthcare facilities should be places of the utmost safety, and the reason why fire safety regulations are so stringent and rigorously enforced. Fire safety in hospitals falls under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, itself under the Regulatory Reform Act 2001, and which covers virtually all public buildings. It requires fire risk assessments, fire safety policies and an operational strategy for implementing them – including rehearsed plans for the safe evacuation of patients, staff and visitors, without reliance on external agencies. Sometimes, however, those plans need to be questioned. Last year, following the outbreak of fire at Royal Stoke University Hospital, bed gridlock was reported as staff evacuated patients, with many people instead taking refuge on the roof. Much contemporary thinking on fire safety in healthcare facilities dates back 50 years and a catastrophic fire at the Shelton Hospital psychiatric unit, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire, which caused a national outcry, brought in changes to fire safety in major institutions and improved training for staff. The fire in February 1968 was most likely started by a discarded cigarette and killed 24 female patients, suffocated by smoke in their beds. A further 14 women were hurt. Despite much better building and fire regulations, fires in hospitals still do happen. This year, several wards at Coventry’s University Hospital were evacuated after fire broke out and, in Glasgow, fire completely destroyed a former hospital building at the old Stobhill Hospital – adjacent to an existing healthcare facility. Coroners have also criticised two recent patient fire deaths at mental health providers Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust and at Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Both fires were started deliberately, and the former was found to be suicide. Earlier this year, a 34-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for starting deliberate fires in two Kent hospitals, and who had a long history of fire raising. One person who was evacuated later died.

Most importantly, the fabric of any building, but particularly a healthcare facility, needs to be robust and resistant to the spread of fire. However, after the Grenfell Tower fire, investigations found flammable cladding in several NHS hospitals, some of which still hasn’t been removed. Last June, fire chiefs warned that up to 38 hospital sites may be as dangerous as Grenfell Tower, with nine identified as at greatest risk. A major trauma unit in Oxford is still closed because of concerns over fire risks. The simple fact is that, if fire does break out, it needs to be suppressed – most commonly with a sprinkler system – and contained, which is where specialist glazing systems have an important role to play – containing the fire for up to 120 minutes: long enough for safe evacuation and for an emergency response. At Wrightstyle, we have long UK and international experience in designing steel and aluminium systems to mitigate against fire and other security risks, in all kinds of commercial and public buildings. Most recently, we have supplied advanced systems to healthcare facilities in the UK, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan. For the Hong Kong facility, in a typhoon area, the design specifically also required high windloading resistance. In a hospital environment, where ambient light has an important influence on staff morale and patient recovery, glazing systems can therefore have both a functional and aesthetic purpose. Most importantly, if a fire does break out, advanced glazing systems will ensure that it’s contained at source.

The £110 million new University of the West of Scotland (UWS) campus at Hamilton International Technology Park developed by HFD Property Group (HFD) and designed by Mosaic Architecture + Design has opened its doors to the new student intake. A partnership between UWS, and developers HFD, the new 235,000 sq.ft. Lanarkshire campus offers a range of specialist labs, teaching facilities and social spaces as well as a gym, and student union.

36

The campus also sees the introduction of innovative learning landscapes combining formal learning environments with new interactive and technology-rich learning zones.

The new campus is one of the UK’s ‘greenest’ educational environments, with carbon neutral buildings incorporating sustainability features such as 100% renewable power, generated through a windfarm and rainwater harvesting.

The campus includes a 236-capacity auditorium and a conference space for up to 128 people. A priority has been placed on sustainability, making UWS Lanarkshire one of the UK’s greenest university campuses, powered by renewable energy from the nearby Blantyre Muir wind farm.

The three campus buildings which form the Campus are joined by a ‘Street’ which provides work and social spaces for students, staff and the local community. The buildings have been designed to adapt to modern learning techniques which rely more heavily on smart devices and open plan teaching.

Neil Haining, Director of Mosaic, said: “The new UWS Lanarkshire Campus is truly an innovative, dynamic and collaborative university campus, filled with inspiring and flexible teaching spaces and packed with new technology.

“Three separate campus buildings are joined by ‘The Street’ – a well-designed bright and airy social space which provides the ideal environment for students staff and the wider public to study, relax or socialise.” Matt Bellshaw, Director at HFD Property Group, said “We are delighted to have completed this unique project and have enjoyed working closely with all of our partners to deliver a new home in Lanarkshire for UWS. “Seeing the property complete and in use by students is hugely rewarding, even better is the strong positive feedback from staff and students. Unlike many developers, HFD’s role often extends beyond completion of the project, in this instance we are thrilled to continue our partnership with both UWS and Aviva into the building’s operational phase.”

ISG’s £70 million BTR boost for North West ISG has been appointed by build-to-rent developer Brickland to deliver two major city centre residential schemes in the North West, with an overall construction value in excess of £70 million.

gym, lounge and concierge service. The development also includes commercial space at ground floor level. Work is due to commence in October and scheduled for completion in summer 2020.

The larger of the two projects is a circa £48 million, 363-apartment scheme set over two towers of 16 and 19 storeys in the Cornbrook area of Manchester. ISG will also deliver a circa £24 million, nine-storey, 200-unit development in the Baltic Triangle area of Liverpool. The Cornbrook scheme comprises one and two-bedroom units, as well as duplex and townhouse apartments. Designed to foster strong community bonds, the development includes a coworking space, a library, gym, two roof top gardens and resident lounge areas.

Both tower blocks will incorporate a slip form concrete core and traditional brick façade, with undercroft car parking and raised courtyards. The scheme includes the formation of a new treelined public avenue. Enabling works are underway with main work expected to start on site in November, with completion scheduled for autumn 2020. Within Liverpool, ISG will deliver a nine-storey steel frame and brick clad structure, with two levels of car parking. The 200-units comprise one, two and threebedroom apartments, and residents will benefit from a landscaped upper floor terrace,

Paul Munro, regional director for ISG’s North West business, said: “This appointment showcases our capability to deliver high-value projects in our core cities as we continue to contribute to the everchanging skylines across Manchester and Liverpool. Both schemes address the region’s continuing demand for high-quality rented accommodation, alongside a real focus on creating a sense of community and place.” Darren Leary, director at Brickland, said: “We are pleased to be working in partnership with ISG to deliver these two high profile schemes and hope that these projects will be a catalyst to further develop our relationship nationally on our wider pipeline.” www.isgplc.com

Case Study October 2018

Workforce productivity: What makes a good GPS tracking system? “If a GPS system helped you take on one extra job per week, and if overtime payments could be reduced by a couple of hours per week, what would your return be per employee?”

L

andscape contracting is labour intensive. With many vehicles, drivers and sites to manage, and customers spanning a wide radius, a popular tool for improving workforce productivity is GPS tracking. A good tracking system doesn’t just tell you where your vehicles are, it provides information that is directly relevant to your business operations. The following points will help you choose a system with the strongest reporting capabilities:

1. Which reports will I need to improve productivity and operating costs? Accurate timesheets teamed with late arrival and early departure alerts will reduce undue overtime claims and ensure your customers get the hours of service that they pay for. Matt O’Conner, Managing Director of John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance advises “Quartix vehicle tracking lets you take control of your fleet, improve operational efficiency and manage costs, safety and time.” Tracking reports also provide proof of attendance on-site, and the data is useful in response to customer queries.

2. Which reports can identify actions needed to lower fuel costs? To help your drivers become more fuel efficient, you must know how your vehicles are being driven. Reports that include daily route logs, driving style reports with acceleration and braking metrics and geofencing alerts to flag unauthorised journeys and unwarranted use of company fuel can help. “It doesn’t happen often, but if a driver does use our vehicle at a non-agreed time, we will see that on the system,” says Julie Renshaw of John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance. Helping a driver to improve their driving style can lower fuel costs significantly, in fact by up to 25% (Frost and Sullivan 2015).

38

October 2018 Case Study

3. What other fleet insights can help reduce costly overheads? Real-time vehicle utilisation reports, often extending to ride-on equipment, ensure fewer vehicles are out of action and reduce unnecessary costs. Keeping all your fleet on the road will help to increase your capacity to service and charge customers. Some tracking systems also allow you to set up vehicle MOT, service and maintenance reminders. One of the reasons that Worcestershire-based Whiting Landscape opted for Quartix vehicle tracking was to monitor staff remotely. With most work completed on customer premises, the company could unknowingly lose a lot of money if staff were to leave early or arrive late. Quartix also offers the ability to identify your nearest vehicle to a postcode, so that you can best deal with requests in real-time. In one instance a John O’Conner driver had unintentionally parked a company van in an unsafe place. With this feature of the system, staff were able to quickly identify the driver and contact him about the issue.

4. How will a GPS tracking system support and help my drivers? The contracting market is competitive, and it’s critical to keep operational costs low and ensure quotes are competitive to help the business grow. Share these motivations with your workforce and encourage them to embrace GPS tracking by introducing incentives for exemplary driving behaviour, e.g. most improved driving style or most jobs completed on time. John O’Conner runs a staff incentive scheme, whereby the two best scoring drivers receive cash prizes each month, provided all drivers meet a certain standard. Your drivers are also well covered when it comes to false claims about their driving or punctuality. “Quartix vehicle tracking actually works in our drivers’ defence, it’s their personal protection in case of unfair claims”, Matt O’Conner explains. Drivers can be given access to their own tracking data and driving scores via the Quartix mobile app. This provides immediate feedback on their daily trips and lets them take control of their own progress.

With Quartix, short-term and rolling contracts offer you optimum flexibility - should your number of vehicles change, you aren’t tied in for several years. If you have a fleet of 40+ vehicles, special rates and longer-term contracts are optional. To learn how Quartix can help your business visit www.quartix.net, email enquiries@quartix.net, or call 01686 806 663.

Eco-friendly decking firm Composite Prime help fight war on plastic

Composite Prime® says demand for its decking range made from the latest composite technology has soared as consumers shun plastic. With around eight million tons of plastic polluting the earth’s oceans every year the race to protect marine life and fragile corals is growing ever more urgent every day. Playing a part in tackling this challenge is one of the key priorities for Composite Prime Ltd, a Yorkshire-based eco-friendly decking firm. Composite Prime’s concern for the environment is an ethos shared by employees who are passionately committed to tackling dangerous environmental changes both globally, and locally. This priority is reflected in the company’s work processes and the results can be seen in the composite decking range which is attracting growing interest.

42

The company’s HD Deck ® Dual and HD Deck ® XS products combine Forest Stewardship Council FSC® 100% certified hardwood timber from well managed, sustainable sources and recycled plastics, seen as a crucial consideration in the current global campaign to reduce

plastic waste. Composite Prime takes great pride in its environmental credentials - using sustainable friendly materials throughout the manufacturing processes of its entire range of decking products.

Following extensive research and testing over the past two years in the UK and Scandinavia, this year PoolLock is excited to introduce its new HeatLock Thermofoam canvas with enhanced insulation properties. Thanks to the foamed insulation layer applied to one side of the canvas, heat transfer across the membrane is reduced by a factor of 3 when compared to standard fabrics for similar applications. HeatLock’s closed-cell foam structure ensure that PoolLock covers are not only the safest, but also the most energy-efficient available on the market. PoolLock’s unique hydraulic-drive system means that you do not need to have any electrical components near your pool. The electrical power pack used to operate the cover and drive the two hydraulic motors can be placed as far from the pool as required. Opening and closing the pool is as easy as turning a key switch, which means that the cover (and the pool) are actually used once installed. PoolLock safety covers provide a solid barrier between the water and surrounding area, effectively preventing any access to the water and making them the safest covers on

the market. In addition, all PoolLock covers will reduce the amount of heat, water and chemicals lost through evaporation, which means pool owners can save money on electricity and chemical usage. PoolLock Automatic Covers offer you the safest, most convenient, most reliable and energy-efficient way to cover your pool. With over 30 years of experience, and installations in over 20 countries, PoolLock is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of automatic safety and slatted covers for swimming pools.

TRACTION ENHANCING NANOTECHNOLOGY

A POSITIVE STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION In the face of some 50,000 injuries treated in NHS Accident and Emergency departments each year - all caused by slips, trips and falls, a company specialising in accident prevention methods has introduced an innovative new product which dramatically increases the traction on most flooring surfaces and is equally effective when applied to the soles of footwear.

Using an entirely new and patented nanotechnology formula within an environmentallyfriendly solution consisting of 96.8% water, millions of invisible ‘nanospikes’ per square inch are formed which give up to 200% increased traction on dry surfaces and 500% on wet, including areas where no shoes are worn such as pool sides, showers and other slippery surfaces.

Called ‘TREADSURE™’ the product can be applied quickly and easily to all solid surface areas with a minimum of interference to usual foot traffic or work environment. All types of footwear can be treated from high-heels, office and sports shoes to work-boots to increase traction and reduce the risk of slip and fall accidents. Commenting on the introduction of his company’s new product to the UK,

Michael Burgess, joint MD of Nottingham based Arkad Health and Safety Limited said :- “Our company’s overall policy is to help prevent injury and save lives and we believe that with TREADSURE™ we will be doing just that. Besides the obvious practical safety benefits for the individual, every business has a duty to protect employees, visitors or customers and has to meet the requirements of public liability insurance in respect of slip, trip and fall hazards. Households are also at risk from claims due to accidental injury. The use of this revolutionary traction enhancing solution will therefore do much to avoid the possibility of litigation and prevent possible life-shattering accidents.”

home and they slip and fall you could also be legally at risk. TREADSURE™ Traction Enhancement treatment decreases the risk of slips and falls by increasing the traction of surfaces WITHOUT changing the physical properties of the treated surface. The unique nanotechnology allows the treatment of indoor and outdoor surfaces where a slip and fall hazard is present. This can be completed in a short period of time with little interruption to the usual foot traffic, minimising downtime and loss of production.

The TREADSURE™ product is currently available direct from Arkad Health & Safety Limited in 500ml bottles at £29.99 RRP (inc.VAT) to treat up to 4 pairs of shoes, and 1 or 5 litre containers with 1 litre covering up to 130sq.ft. (POA). Slip and fall hazards are an ever present danger in our lives. They can be disruptive to our health, families, businesses and profits. They can even be fatal. Whether you are at work or enjoying a leisure activity the risk of slipping and falling is almost always present.

Statistics show that ‘Slip and Fall’ accidents are the most common, damaging to human health, and expensive to business. It is so important to protect against slips and falls that laws are in place to ensure that every business that employs staff or has visitors to their premises protects them against slipping and falling. If you invite someone to your

Some facts to consider: • During 2015/16 there were an estimated 20,000 slips trips and falls in the United Kingdom workplace • This resulted in an average of 7.8 days off work or nearly 1 million lost days • The cost to our society is over £800 million per year • There are over 50,000 victims of slips (same level falls) admitted to Accident and Emergency each year • Every business has a DUTY to protect their

employees, visitors or customers and MUST meet the requirements of public liability insurance in respect of slip and trip hazards • Injuries create problems for injured persons and have a devastating impact on quality of life for many families. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) created the ‘Shattered Lives‘ campaign to help reduce slip and fall incidents TREADSURE TM • Is inexpensive to treat large areas • Can be applied in high traffic areas with minimal inconvenience • Does not change or damage the physical properties of the treated surface • Is the only product available for the direct treatment of footwear to increase traction. • Has almost no scent and does not change the appearance of the treated surface. • Cannot create ‘trip hazards’ like some other anti-slip solutions • Is easy to apply For more information and to discuss trade distribution opportunities, visit: www.tread-sure.com email: info@tread-sure.com or call Ian Baker or Michael Burgess on 0330 333 7426
