As 2018 draws to a close, one of the country’s leading Offsite Manufacturers, Premier Modular, reflects on the past year. Having delivered award winning offsite and volumetric solutions for more than 60 years, Premier prides itself on its ability to provide the highest quality buildings, offering a skilled and knowledgeable design and build service. Part of a large multi-national industrial group, Waco International, Premier has the strong financial backing provided by the Group, which has enabled it to build a substantial modular hire fleet.

ack in 2015, Premier Modular was appointed to provide 3 modular building complexes, comprising 38,000 m2 of offices and site welfare facilities for use during the 10 year construction phase of the new nuclear power generation plant at Hinkley Point C in Somerset. The 3 complexes were a critically important part of the preparations needed, housing all the management and technical personnel required during this phase. The third of these buildings was handed over ahead of schedule earlier in 2018. The site now has facilities at 3 key points, collectively providing office space for over 1,600 people, with additional canteen and welfare facilities for about 4,500 people. The clients are delighted with these impressive best in class facilities, allowing them to organise the teams working on the site in a

collaborative way, with client and contractor teams sitting together, increasing the overall productivity and efficiency of the site. Whilst working on this nationally important infrastructure project, Premier continued to develop strong client relationships in its core sectors and their recent partnership with ISG Construction has delivered 8 school facilities in 12 months as part of Manchester City Council’s Education Basic Needs framework. The first school, St Margaret’s CE Primary School, was chosen by Manchester City Council to be their first pilot for delivering a project to BIM Level 2, including their first Asset Information Model. The 775m2 2-storey building provides new nursery facilities and 3 reception classrooms, accommodating an additional form of entry. This scheme won the Digital Construction

category in the North West Regional Construction Awards for 2018; as well as receiving Highly Commended in the Integration and Collaborative Working category.

products, delivered within an EU-compliant framework – the perfect solution to the critically important delivery of housing stock highlighted frequently in the news.

Standardisation of design in these education projects was achieved through collaboration of all teams involved, using lessons learned on each of the projects to ensure that the designs used met with the end users’ differing requirements, whilst leaving the clients with standard designs repeatable for any future schemes they may have.

The standard designs, coupled with CHIC’s existing proven materials supply chain, produce a more cost efficient, quality product, with speed of delivery. Whilst the cost benefits of this scheme have been delivered by the development of a standardised product, flexibility is still available to procure bespoke designs and solutions where required.

This volumetric approach has also been used to great effect in residential projects. Following their appointment to the CHIC BuildSmart framework, Premier have worked closely with their framework partners to develop standardised housing

Premier’s forward thinking attitude means that they are always looking for product improvements and innovation; Premier believes that the fire resistance of buildings is very important for its temporary and permanent buildings. At Premier we feel it is not good

enough to provide our clients with an assumption that our buildings are ‘fire proof’ based on various codes and data sheets. When developing our latest product, as part of quality control during development, we ensured the product went through real life fire tests. All the components were tested together, ensuring our product has robustness and that all the component parts used have a mutual compatibility to deliver the required rating. In a market where shortages exist, building standards are extremely high and sustainability is of growing importance, standardisation and offsite construction as delivered by Premier has to be a big part of the solution. 0800 3160888 sales@premiermodular.co.uk www.premiermodular.co.uk

Construction Marketing Awards 2018 Winners Announced The winners of the 2018 Construction Marketing Awards have been announced, with two companies very much to the fore, taking home eight awards between them! Jewson had a great night, winning three awards, something which has only been done once before. However, even this great achievement was surpassed by Certsure, who went home with five awards! Certsure won Best Product Launch, Best use of Events and Live Marketing, Best use of Advertising and Best Big Budget Campaign, with their Lucia Garcia carrying off the Young Marketer of the Year award. Jewson won Best

Digital Campaign, Best use of Social Media, and Best Distributor Campaign. The winners were announced at a gala dinner in London. With the 23 winners and five Highly Commended carrying off the prized trophies. Prysmian won the Strategic Planning and Management award, which was presented by Chartered Institute of Marketing chief executive Chris Daly, and Gibbs & Dandy won the key Marketing Team of the Year award, presented by overall sponsor Simon Mahoney of Barbour ABI. The Construction Marketing Awards showcase the construction industry’s creativity, innovation and effectiveness in marketing. This year saw more entries than ever, and judges said they were of a very high standard, so just getting on the shortlist was said to be hard.

Cambridge researchers developing self-healing concrete Researchers at the University of Cambridge are using microencapsulation technologies developed by Dolomite Microfluidics to develop self-healing construction materials. As highlighted in recent BBC News broadcasts, the Department of Engineering’s Geotechnical and Environmental Research Group is developing microcapsules containing ‘healing’ agents – such as minerals, epoxy or polyurethane – which can be added to building materials to allow self-repair of small cracks which develop over time.

04

Dr Livia Ribeiro de Souza, a postdoctoral researcher in the group, explained: “Many composite building materials used in the construction industry – such as concrete – suffer fatigue over time, developing small cracks. We are hoping to overcome this problem by adding microcapsules filled with ‘healing’ agents to the

concrete before it is used. The idea is that, as cracks begin to form, they rupture the microcapsules, releasing their payload and stabilising the material. “This approach requires the formation and functionalisation of double emulsion microcapsules, which we have been producing with the help of microfluidics. We have been using a Dolomite Microfluidics system since 2014, and find that microfluidics offers much better control of particle size and composition than traditional emulsification polymerization techniques, simplifying the investigation and optimization of particle properties. “The Dolomite system has enabled the researchers to create functionalized microcapsules that bind more strongly to the cement matrix, while also having thinner shell walls and higher core retention, improving their self-healing properties.”

In addition, this year saw the inclusion of a light-hearted competition for the Best Promotional Giveaway, with the winner – Constructing Excellence Kent’s construction jobs top trumps – decided by a vote of the dinner guests at the Gala Awards Dinner.

Regional construction hubs needed for infrastructure plan Civil engineering contractors are calling on Government to help establish a network of logistics and manufacturing hubs to deliver its ambitious infrastructure plans. The Civil Engineering Contractors Association has said that former industrial towns and cities would be prime locations, helping to spread the social benefits of big project spending. It is one of the key recommendations in a new report calling for a shift away from just using hard economic returns to judge the viability of infrastructure projects towards considering wider social impacts. Already Heathrow Airport is leading the way with a plan for four regional hubs to deliver its third runway project. Prepared and researched by leading economic consultancy Cebr, ‘The social benefits of infrastructure investment’ report also recommends that an either/or approach to delivering much-needed investment in London and across the rest of the UK is dropped Instead, there should be a recognition that investment outside the capital supports growth in London and vice versa, says the report.

Burnley Town Centre Regeneration Plans Local councillors recommended to approve Burnley’s Town Centre and Canalside Masterplan at the end of the month. The masterplan sets out proposals on how the town centre and canalside areas could look in the future. The key proposals include: A major new leisure development called “Pioneer Place”, which includes the relocation of Reel cinema to a new multi-screen complex at Curzon Street. The new site will also include new food, beverage and retail units. It would include a new public square and improved pedestrian access. The development would include a 125-space car park. Continued improvement to Charter Walk shopping centre, including new frontages for the shops facing Market Square and the relocation of the market hall access stair. The development of a university campus site, including new student accommodation around Sandygate Square. A longerterm option is to develop the George Street Mill site, which is between the town centre and Sandygate. Largely derelict at present, the area could become a future university campus site, including additional teaching buildings for UCLan, with more student accommodation, or it could be developed for residential use, building on the success of Bridgewalk Apartments. The plan is projected to bring an estimated £100 million boost and up to 1,000 new jobs to the borough.

It also calls on Government to maintain a commitment to spending 1.2% of GDP on infrastructure, while examining the case for higher social and economic outcomes if this spending ceiling was raised. Mark Thurston, CEO of High Speed 2, said: “It is clear for the whole of the sector that the debate on infrastructure investment priorities has to shift from cold, hard-nosed calculations alone “This new report from CECA comes at an important time for the industry, setting out the case for the social good that housing, transport and energy infrastructure can bring to the country.” CECA chief executive Alasdair Reisner said: “Understanding how infrastructure affects people in different ways is vital to good investment decisions. “We have, in this report gone beyond the usual approach of estimating the economic impacts infrastructure can bring, but instead have considered how its benefits affect people’s lives in different ways. The benefits of long-term infrastructure investment are clear. “Not only is there a strong economic outcome – previous CECA / Cebr research has found that every £1bn of infrastructure construction increases overall economic activity by £2.84bn – but the research published today demonstrates that there is also significant social benefit. “Well planned infrastructure investment can not only transform how we all live and work, but it has a notable benefit for those areas which have been left behind over the years.”

Over 20% of drink driving offences occur in the morning UK Safety Experts Urge UK Businesses to Protect Workforce During Festive Season

UK businesses have a legal responsibility of ensuring staff are not over the alcohol limit while at work, to support this, Arco, the UK’s leading health and safety expert, wants to encourage the use of breathalysers in the work place this festive season.

06

December is statistically the worst month for drink driving in the UK. As everyone winds down over the festive period, more people risk being over the limit. New figures show that 58% of people who have four or more drinks on a night out sometimes drive the following morning, but that only one third of people are aware they could still be over the limit, which is why over 20% of drink driving offences occur in the morning.

Under the Health and Safety at Work, Act of 1974, employers have a legal responsibility to ensure, the health and safety of employees, if the don’t they could be prosecuted. To tackle this, many UK businesses are being advised to adopt a drug/ alcohol screening for employees this winter with an emphasis on those in safety-sensitive industries, including jobs that require the operation of industrial machinery or driving and logistics. This is important, as in safety critical areas, drug and alcohol misuse can cause serious accidents which can be life threatening. Arco recommends that breathalysers are an ideal solution in the workplace as a means of screening and urge businesses to

take responsibility to provide peace of mind for workers and employers. If an employee operates machinery while under the influence of alcohol they can pose a risk to himself and also others, . Arco provide a range of breathalysers including the new Drager Alcotest models. • • •

Peel plans five resi towers at MediaCityUK Developer Peel Land is proposing to build five tower blocks offering a mix of housing and student accommodation next to MediaCityUK on Salford Quays. The firm in joint venture with local landowner Tokenhouse has just submitted outline plans for a 1,500 unit scheme to the east of Phase 2 of MediaCityUK at Michigan Avenue. Plans drawn up by Jeffrey Bell Architects include what would be the largest tower within the wider Salford Quays development, with the five planned buildings stepping up in height from 14 storeys to 38 storeys. Around 4,000 flats are currently under construction in Manchester city centre and potentially around 11,000 flats planned to be built over the next 5 years. Peel argues that most of these are build to rent schemes leaving scope to meet expected future demand for flats for sale. The outline plan also proposes the first major co-living scheme in the Manchester and Salford areas of up to 450 flats and up to 600 student rooms.

Offsite homes to address social housing shortfall, says Actis A massive decline in the number of homes built for social rent over the past decade, revealed in a recent government report, could be addressed in part by increasing focus on quicker-to-build offsite homes. That’s the message from offsite construction flag waver, Actis, which is on a mission to share the benefits of the speedier construction method over more ponderous alternatives. Figures released by the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government show just 6,463 homes were built in England for social rent in 2017-18, down from almost 30,000 a decade ago. In England, about 1.25 million families were registered on the waiting list for social housing between 2016-17, of whom two-

thirds have been waiting for more than a year. On average, an English local authority has more than 3,500 families on its books. The government recently lifted the council housing borrowing cap, which could enable local authorities to build an additional 15,000 homes a year. Earlier this year, an extra £2 billion was announced to fund 40,000 new homes projects until 2029, with £9 billion of funding promised last year. With such a massive shortfall to make up, Dan Anson-Hart, national specification manager at Actis, says as many as possible of these muchneeded homes should be constructed offsite, both to make the process speedier and to take on board the reality that the construction industry is suffering from a severe skills shortage.

Cutting through the noise

Arco launches its noise awareness campaign helping businesses to eliminate health risks

A

person’s life and wellbeing can be severely affected if their hearing is damaged by working in an environment where there is a daily exposure to extreme sound levels.

08

To ensure its customers understand the best ways to manage noise levels and maintain a safe working environment for their employees, Arco, the UK’s leading safety company, has launched a noise awareness campaign, providing employers with key advice and guidance. The campaign also highlights the importance of issuing workers with the most appropriate hearing protection when other noise control measures cannot be achieved, to prevent the health risks of noise exposure such as Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL).

NIHL is one of the biggest occupational health problems facing the UK today, with more than 20,000 new cases reported in the workplace annually. Whilst damage can be irreversible, the condition is preventable and Arco is committed to helping employers find solutions for noise problems. Although everyone can be affected, workers in the construction, demolition, road repair, manufacturing and engineering sectors are at particular risk due to the frequent use of power tools. Whenever an individual’s personal exposure limit exceeds 85 decibels in any sector, action must be taken to reduce noise levels and PPE provided in-order to protect workers from the associated health risks.

In April 2018, the PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 reclassified all hearing protection against harmful noise to Category III, which is designed to protect against very serious risks where the hazard is not immediately obvious. The effects of hearing loss are now recognised as being severely damaging to a person’s quality of life. As part of Arco’s commitment to keeping people safe at work, the safety company has created a toolbox talk exploring the negative effects of noise in the workplace and the steps that need to be taken to assess, reduce and control noise. Ecodek, part of the Epwin Group of companies, manufactures an innovative board system made entirely from ethically sourced hardwood waste and recycled high density polyethylene. Established in 2002, Ecodek have been manufacturing Wood Polymer Composite Products since 2004. As the UK’s market leader in WPC decking materials, the firm manufactured over 1 million linear metres of decking in 2017, consuming 3200 tonnes of recycled wood and plastic. In addition, Ecodek have achieved “carbon negative” status for the production of its composite decking system. A life-cycle assessment programme, undertaken by the BioComposites Centre of Bangor University, considered production of the decking on a cradle to factory gate basis, accounting for all significant materials, transport, energy use and packaging inputs. Results showed that production of ecodek® actually had a net effect of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere rather than adding

to it – hence carbon negative - a huge achievement in modern manufacturing and one that clearly illustrates the company’s environmental credentials. This important achievement, believed to be a first for a UK based polymer company, and follows years of painstaking development of its design, manufacturing and distribution processes. Thanks to its vast range of products and client focused approach, Ecodek is the market choice for high end residential developments

in London where the majority of apartments feature a balcony. ecodek® material can be found across much of the redevelopment zones in London such as Greenwich Peninsula, Elephant and Castle, Nine Elms and Fulham Wharf. Ecodek’s aim is to continue to be the UK’s Number 1 WPC manufacturer and to lead the way through innovative use of materials whilst maintain carbon negative product credentials. To achieve this, looking ahead the company’s focus will be on continuing to and using R&D to drive innovation.

Schöck meets steel frame challenge at Oxford Brookes University Oxford Brookes University is one of the UK’s top modern universities. It has built a local, national and international reputation for teaching and research excellence and its roots can be traced back to 1865, when it began as the Oxford School of Art. Recent significant investment in the estate has already resulted in multi award-winning facilities and this development is continuing with a ten-year, £220 million estate investment plan. One recently completed facility has seen the former Main Hall demolished and replaced with the impressive Sir Kenneth Wheare Hall, an elegant new building, designed by BGS Architects. It is a tribute to one of the most influential figures in the University’s history; and creates a multi-use space for teaching and many other key university events, including graduation ceremonies, where it is able to accommodate over 600 guests.

Construction Update - Recommended Companies of the Year Support for the external cladding is provided by cantilever connections to the universal columns

Steel frame and cladding mean high thermal conductivity Steel has a high thermal conductivity compared with many other construction materials and this means that both the structural steel frame and outer steel cladding system must be designed to minimise any possible thermal bridging issues. Steel elements should not be continuous through the cladding system. With the Sir Kenneth Wheare Hall construction, support for the external cladding was provided by cantilever connections to the universal columns; and it was critical to provide a structural thermal break at various strategic connectivity points. The Schöck Isokorb for steel-to-steel connections provided the ideal solution. By thermally separating the exterior steel structure from the interior steel structure, these modular thermal insulation elements with their stainless steel components and Neopor® insulation, reliably mitigate the risk of thermal bridging.

Thermal bridging has a number of consequences One outcome is local heat loss from the building, resulting in more energy being required to maintain the internal temperature. And while this remains a very important aspect of thermal bridging, there is a more serious issue as far as building occupants are concerned. Low internal surface temperatures in the area of the thermal bridge can cause condensation if they are below the dew point of the air. Leading not only to structural integrity problems with absorbent materials such as insulation products or plasterboard, but the occurrence of mould growth. Which has potentially serious health implications for occupants in the form of asthma and allergy risks.

Totally verifiable performance The Isokorb units for steel-to-steel connectivity are able to withstand extremely demanding loads and are effective against both bending moment and shear forces. The modular design of the unit ensures that it can be adapted to all profile sizes and load bearing capacity requirements. Typical applications in addition to cladding are connectivity solutions for brise soleil, canopy roofs, frame system crossbars and balconies. Although the product type used at Oxford Brookes University is for steel-to-steel, the comprehensive Isokorb range from Schöck also

The modular steel-to-steel Isokorb

offers solutions for concreteto-concrete, concrete-to-steel – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. When any Isokorb product type is incorporated into residential buildings or public buildings, the required fRsi value – the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk that must be equal to or greater than 0.75 – is always comfortably met. The range also complies with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP 2012, concerning CO2 emissions from buildings and respectively heat losses through non-repeating thermal bridges. Products meet full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations, have NHBC approval and offer LABC Registration. There is also the security of independent BBA Certification. Ecophon Strengthens Its Solo Offer Ecophon has launched the latest extensions to Ecophon Solo™, its market leading family of free hanging acoustic panels. The new additions to the already extensive product portfolio of versatile acoustic absorbers provide architects and designers with even greater choice and creative freedom.

December 2018 Recommended Companies of the Year

Construction Update - Recommended Companies of the Year Launched as the first acoustic cloud to the market almost ten years ago, Ecophon Solo™ is a design-friendly, freehanging sound absorber that due to its versatility can be installed in virtually any space. The Solo range features panels in a variety of standard shapes including square, rectangular and circles while Solo Freedom allows designers to express themselves creatively with custom shapes and colours. The latest expansion of the range introduces larger sizes, integrated luminaries and new baffle designs. The innovative glass wool core used in Ecophon panels provides a lightweight, stable solution that is strong and rigid regardless of the size or shape. This makes it possible for Ecophon to produce uniquely large panels. This is seen in the newly launched 3000x1200 mm rectangle - the largest on the market - and the 2400 x 600 thin rectangle. Ecophon’s Connect Profile and accessories makes installation simple and means that even the largest size panels are quick to fit on site. The expanded Solo offering now also offers a combined lighting and sound absorption option. The Ecophon Line™ luminaire, one of three normally only available in the Ecophon Focus™ range, has now been integrated in the 2400x1200 mm Solo panel. Solo Rectangle Line is delivered with the opal integrated in the panel so installation is as simple as hanging the panel, adding the included luminaire and connecting into the lighting system.

Following the recent growth in the architectural popularity of baffles, Ecophon have taken their offer to the next level with Ecophon Solo™ Baffle Wave and Ecophon Solo™ Baffle ZigZag, innovative shapes designed to complement the traditional straight edge baffle. Furthermore, due to the growing recognition of the importance of adding sound absorbers to walls, Ecophon has also added Solo™ Baffle on Wall to the product family. This simple

change allows an architect to continue the baffle design onto the walls, making an aesthetic statement while creating an even better sound environment. Ecophon recognises that often, either as part of the design or due to a lack of ceiling height, Solo may need to be installed close to the soffit. To make this simple, Ecophon has developed a new, simple, direct fixing solution which makes it possible to easily install the Solo panels as close as 50 mm from the soffit. Will Jones, Marketing Manager at Ecophon said: “The design of interior spaces has a huge effect on people’s experience, so architects need the freedom to design with solutions that not only deliver the required acoustic performance but also complement and even enhance the design of a space. “The new products and updates to the Solo range strengthen our offer and mean we have the widest range of freehanging absorbers on the market. Since we launched the original system it has become a favourite among architects and we are proud to still be building on what we started almost a decade ago.” For more information about the Ecophon Solo™ range visit www.ecophon.com/thenewsolo

he construction industry has used modules, such as bathroom ‘pods’, for many years where a repetitive build, such as a hotel has many of the same elements. There is a big benefit of producing these off-site in a controlled environment where specialist equipment is available and good levels of quality control. Simply delivered to site, lifted into place and services already provided and in place to simply link-up. Modularisation has now gone further to complete walls for rooms which can be produced with openings with fitted windows creating a waterproof and structural unit. Some of these larger room ‘pods’ can be produced as complete rooms with finishes and furniture complete. Protected adequately against the elements, each unit is transported to site and simply lifted into place usually on a prepared structural grid.

Aluprof Supports Modularisation Construction Technology

The concept of the ‘pod’ hotel has been constructed in the USA, the rooms are generally smaller than average, so more rooms can be accommodated for any given city space, but quality of the rooms is higher with finishes lasting longer, in turn this makes these rooms more cost effective for the guest. In the USA they have even produced small apartments on this basis which are known as ‘pod pads’. The concept could be adopted in the UK to ease our housing shortage, particularly in the city. The idea of modularisation and hotel construction are a very good match and many of the new hotels constructed today use this technology. The concept works for both budget hotel construction and city centre luxury hotel developments. The modular method of construction allows developers to realise hotels of up to 20 storeys to be quickly erected.

Construction Update - Recommended Companies of the Year especially for repetitive structure layouts such as hotels. It is claimed that a 100 bed hotel could be erected on site in just two weeks using the modular pod construction. One recent example of this type of construction is the recently opened Moxy Hotel at Aberdeen airport which was constructed by Robertsons. Using modular CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) construction, manufactured in Italy, the upper floors were assembled and bolted on top of a steel framed ground floor structure. The completed pods were then linked to a modular network of services within the new structure.

Wojciech Brożyna - Managing Director Aluprof UK The key for the window system is to allow the window to be fitted within the ‘pod’ and finishes to be made good internally, but then having an ability for the external facade to be finished up to the window system and made serviceable and weathertight. Aluprof have worked with several companies to achieve bespoke solutions and provided trained installers at the point of installation. The ability for construction to be completed on site quickly and to quite accurate precision with minimal snagging issues means that this method of construction is very economical,

In the south, the Citizen M hotel at Shoreditch, London was also constructed using a similar principle of construction.

Aluprof UK’s head office and extensive distribution centre is located in Altrincham, Cheshire. Aluprof systems are increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK including Passivhaus projects. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained local companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets Aluprof’s exacting standards. Further information is available on the company’s website at www.aluprof.eu and specialist advice is available directly from Aluprof’s UK offices on 0161 941 4005.

Benefits realised by the client included; a quicker construction than compared with a traditional build method, this allowed the client to generate revenue earlier; an enhanced quality of final construction due to the strict testing and auditing regime of the factory and increased safety, as fewer man hours are required on site. Aluprof can offer guidance on all forms of construction which require windows or curtain wall systems, either installed into off-site element or on site installations. With early engagement in the design process, often savings can be made in both installation requirements and bespoke profiles.

The complete package: The latest laminations from VEKA with a full spectrum of support Industry-leading systems supplier VEKA Group has added another string to its bow, for the benefit of fabricators and installers. The Burnley-based PVC-U giant now offers perfectly colour-matched laminated mouldings. And, for a year that has seen the window systems supplier increase its ex-stock offering to 16 combinations, from its 29-strong Variations colour collection, and launch the Imagine BiFold Door in Grey Base; this latest piece of news that VEKA has created a simple (and fast) supply solution for matching laminated mouldings, further proves the company’s commitment that its customers’ success is integral its own. Marketing Director Dawn Stockell explains: “VEKA Group continues to make significant investment in our lamination department for the benefit of our customers. We know that this is one of the fastest growing areas of our industry, and laminated product currently makes up 39% of VEKA and Halo profile sales, which is well above the industry average. “We’ve partnered with Allied Profiles to create a comprehensive laminated moulding offering that perfectly complements all the colours in our Variations range. This makes for the ideal professional finish to any project. Customers can order online for direct deliveries, so there’s no need to visit a trade counter and, obviously, no longer any need to spray mouldings during fabrication.” The significant investment in lamination by VEKA Group was announced earlier in the year as part of a £5M budget allocated for plant and machinery, which included acquiring a building adjacent to the existing VEKA HQ; increasing the former 380,000 sq ft site by a further 40,000 sq ft and expanding lamination capacity by a staggering 50%. As a large, and long-established company, VEKA is proud to be light footed and adaptable to changing market trends. As such, as the last few years has seen demand grow drastically

20

in specific areas, VEKA has, in turn, stepped up to the plate by adding Anthracite Grey Smooth to its ex-stock list this summer, as well as Cream to the Vertical Slider in both VEKA and Halo systems. The increased lamination capacity though, doesn’t just speed up production and output of the more popular tonal trends, it also means VEKA can respond to smaller runs, and ‘quirkier’ orders faster; getting the profile to fabricators more quickly, so that installers can complete jobs efficiently.

December 2018 Recommended Companies of the Year

When it comes to colour, providing products that fit the bill is just beginning, and each VEKA order also comes with a full spectrum of support from start to finish, as Dawn explains: “Here at VEKA, we go above and beyond to offer a level of support that is unsurpassed in the industry, from marketing materials and guarantees, to sales support, technical advice and much, much more. This is just another example of the team demonstrating our

partnership approach in trying to make every aspect of our customers’ working days a little easier. “In the face of a relatively flat market, VEKA is proud to be part of a Group that will continue to invest in order to see our partners succeed. This year’s investment in plant and machinery is not only about increasing the potential volume of our output, but more importantly, supporting customers with flexibility and efficient service. This means

that they can further build their businesses upon our reputation, and provide an equally flexible and efficient level of service to delight their customers, be they homeowners or commercial specifiers.” Call 01282 716611 or email salesenquiry@veka.com to order a brochure and learn more about laminated mouldings, including pricing, lead times and technical spec.

Construction Update - Recommended Companies of the Year Wrightstyle, the leading international supplier of advanced glazing systems, introduced a new door system in 2018 that provides 90 minutes of integrity and insulation (EI90).

extend across curtain walling, windows and internal partitioning, and the company can design, supply and install using their own trained and certified installers to deliver a complete one-stop service.

The new 8050 series of thermally broken fire doors are fully compatible with Wrightstyle’s SR60 curtain walling system, and provide a new level of aesthetic appeal.

Wrightstyle systems have not only been tested to up to 120 minutes integrity and insulation, but for wind loading and ballistic attack. One of the company’s advanced systems has also been successfully live tested against both a car and lorry bomb.

The door system is available in either single leaf (1606mm wide x 3062mm high or 1534mm wide x 3222mm high) or double leaf (3102mm wide x 3062mm high or 2958mm wide x 3222mm high). The doors, which will accept glass up to 60mm thick, can be used as a stand-alone product or incorporated into Wrightstyle’s SR60 curtain walling system, to provide a complete screen or façade of 90 minutes integrity and insulation. The new door system has been successfully fire tested, and can incorporate any EI-90 glass that has been tested into steel framing to a maximum glass area of 3.97 sq metres. It adds a further option to Wrightstyle’s already extensive range of fire and smoke resistant doors, which include a range of unlatched doors in double or single leaf format – a breakthrough fully-glazed fire door system. The new system therefore adds a further 30 minutes of protection with the significant and added benefit of thermally broken profiles. Extensive ranges Wrightstyle steel and aluminium ranges also

Many bomb resistant glazing structures are simply tested using computer modelling techniques. Wrightstyle took their system to a specialist facility in the north of England and tested it against high explosive detonations. During the year, Wrightstyle has completed a number of prestigious projects including several Crossrail stations in London and a project at Gloucestershire airport. The company also supplies internationally and has completed transportation and shopping centre projects in Hong Kong, a hospital in Saudi Arabia and the Dubai metro. Wrightstyle always advises that the glass and framing system should be specified as one integrated unit, because if one fails, both fail. Too often, in some jurisdictions, the glass and its framing system are specified separately. In contrast, all Wrighjtstyle systems are complete and guaranteed. It may have been a year of opening doors at Wrightstyle, but the company’s steel and aluminium systems offer glazing solutions for any requirement.

All Wirepas empowered controls operate as a distributed mesh network with no central controller and no single point of failure. This means that the networks, which can consist of an unlimited amount of nodes, are self-healing and constantly optimizing performance. This happens link-by-link taking into account local radio conditions, so that if any device (node) goes offline it will connect to others when it comes back online. The WM protocol uses industry standard encryption and device authentication solutions that prevent unauthorized access to the lighting network. Designed to protect itself against malicious attacks the Wirepas Mesh is secure and dependable. The system minimizes set-up costs as no additional infrastructure is required - the devices themselves form the network and decide for themselves how to operate to extend the coverage range. The automatic operation enables quick and easy installation. Ongoing running costs are also kept to a minimum as the self-

A look back at 2018 with CTS Bridges Making Waves at Rossall Coastal Defence Ecology Park Three bridges with unique ‘wave’ style parapets were installed by CTS Bridges Ltd in the Mythic Coast inspired Ecology Park as part of the Rossall Coastal Protection Scheme. Artist Stephen Broadbent of Broadbent Studios was responsible for the design of the ecology park and his concept for the bridges required the parapets to have a wave effect made from hardwood spindles. CTS worked with Balfour Beatty and Broadbent Studios to develop the design into a buildable solution for the three bridges. Twelve spindles formed one wave effect and each of the Ekki hardwood spindles were cut to the exact shape from a larger timber section to achieve the exact shape required. Once cut they were numbered prior to being methodically fitted by our joiners. The Ekki hardwood deck has Hi-Grip Excel nonslip inserts to provide a slip resistant surface on the multi use bridges.

The three bridges were manufactured by CTS at their factory in Huddersfield prior to being delivered and installed on site in time for the opening of the Coastal Flood Defence scheme carried out by Balfour Beatty for Wyre Council in partnership with the Environment Agency.

High-spec bridge for luxury apartments in Chelsea To complete the hard landscaping around the Chelsea Creek luxury apartment development, London developer, Berkeley St George needed a statement bridge. The 24m long bridge comprises a deceptively simple, elegant concept incorporating acrylic rods into the painted steel frame at close centres which, when lit from their base, provide an illuminated enclosure, while a stripped down secondary internal handrail provides pedestrian restraint.

Principal Contractor, to ensure all trades were coordinated to deliver a successful scheme. To achieve the desired simple lines, careful detailing was required to house the lighting rods and conceal their power supply and driver units discreetly. Precision fabrication was needed to realise this ambition. The final result is a stunning illuminated bridge that provides a stylish focal point over the meandering waterway the Chelsea Creek development.

Overcoming the bounce in Bristol CTS Bridges Ltd undertook all structural design of Castle Bridge, a 91m long stunning new footbridge at Finzels Reach, Bristol, including its value engineering, manufacture and installation. The new bridge twists its way gracefully across the Avon waterway and provides access for pedestrians and cyclists from Castle Park to Finzels Reach development.

CTS partnered with vibration specialists, Full Scale Dynamics, to design, manufacture, install and commission a bespoke tuned mass

damper to position in the longest, most eccentric span to ensure comfort performance parameters were met for walkers, joggers and crowds alike. The complex geometry posed challenges for design with regards to both analysis and concept. The plan curvature generated a low frequency structure easily excited and onerous access constraints during road delivery to site and pontoon delivery down the river under historic arch bridges required the bridge to be assembled in progressive stages. The eye-catching structure will be a lasting legacy of the Finzels Reach development and will be enjoyed by users for years to come.

Workforce productivity:

What makes a good GPS tracking system? “If a GPS system helped you take on one extra job per week, and if overtime payments could be reduced by a couple of hours per week, what would your return be per employee?”

L

andscape contracting is labour intensive. With many vehicles, drivers and sites to manage, and customers spanning a wide radius, a popular tool for improving workforce productivity is GPS tracking. A good tracking system doesn’t just tell you where your vehicles are, it provides information that is directly relevant to your business operations. The following points will help you choose a system with the strongest reporting capabilities:

1. Which reports will I need to improve productivity and operating costs? Accurate timesheets teamed with late arrival and early departure alerts will reduce undue overtime claims and ensure your customers get the hours of service that they pay for. Matt O’Conner, Managing Director of John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance advises “Quartix vehicle tracking lets you take control of your fleet, improve operational efficiency and manage costs, safety and time.” Tracking reports also provide proof of attendance on-site, and the data is useful in response to customer queries.

2. Which reports can identify actions needed to lower fuel costs? To help your drivers become more fuel efficient, you must know how your vehicles are being driven. Reports that include daily route logs, driving style reports with acceleration and braking metrics and geofencing alerts to flag unauthorised journeys and unwarranted use of company fuel can help. “It doesn’t happen often, but if a driver does use our vehicle at a non-agreed time, we will see that on the system,” says Julie Renshaw of John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance. Helping a driver to improve their driving style can lower fuel costs significantly, in fact by up to 25% (Frost and Sullivan 2015).

32

December 2018 Recommended Companies of the Year

3. What other fleet insights can help reduce costly overheads? Real-time vehicle utilisation reports, often extending to ride-on equipment, ensure fewer vehicles are out of action and reduce unnecessary costs. Keeping all your fleet on the road will help to increase your capacity to service and charge customers. Some tracking systems also allow you to set up vehicle MOT, service and maintenance reminders. One of the reasons that Worcestershire-based Whiting Landscape opted for Quartix vehicle tracking was to monitor staff remotely. With most work completed on customer premises, the company could unknowingly lose a lot of money if staff were to leave early or arrive late. Quartix also offers the ability to identify your nearest vehicle to a postcode, so that you can best deal with requests in real-time. In one instance a John O’Conner driver had unintentionally parked a company van in an unsafe place. With this feature of the system, staff were able to quickly identify the driver and contact him about the issue.

4. How will a GPS tracking system support and help my drivers? The contracting market is competitive, and it’s critical to keep operational costs low and ensure quotes are competitive to help the business grow. Share these motivations with your workforce and encourage them to embrace GPS tracking by introducing incentives for exemplary driving behaviour, e.g. most improved driving style or most jobs completed on time. John O’Conner runs a staff incentive scheme, whereby the two best scoring drivers receive cash prizes each month, provided all drivers meet a certain standard. Your drivers are also well covered when it comes to false claims about their driving or punctuality. “Quartix vehicle tracking actually works in our drivers’ defence, it’s their personal protection in case of unfair claims”, Matt O’Conner explains. Drivers can be given access to their own tracking data and driving scores via the Quartix mobile app. This provides immediate feedback on their daily trips and lets them take control of their own progress.

With Quartix, short-term and rolling contracts offer you optimum flexibility - should your number of vehicles change, you aren’t tied in for several years. If you have a fleet of 40+ vehicles, special rates and longer-term contracts are optional. To learn how Quartix can help your business visit www.quartix.net, email enquiries@quartix.net, or call 01686 806 663.

Stay Close and Cosy to Nature with Panasonic & the Dome Experience The team at Panasonic have been working in collaboration with architects, engineers and local crafts people to create an unfiltered, unique and comfortable luxury living experience in bubble style Domes to bring a 180-degree transparent window to the world of nature. Michael Beare of Finn Lough Resort is the visionary behind this unique holiday experience. He explains: “Our aim was to be able to offer holidaymakers a truly unique experience in this glorious setting, yet with minimal impact on these wonderful surroundings. We aimed to minimise the footprint of the domes, offering off grid power and heating solutions, minimal construction requirements and a design that blends into the landscape.”

Each Dome is kitted out with Panasonic Aquarea Fan Coils which are connected to air to water Panasonic Aquarea Monobloc heat pumps for quick reaction heating and cooling as well as domestic hot water. Panasonic additionally supply DX ERV units to maintain a constant air flow rate. Furthermore, each Dome can be monitored via the Panasonic Aquarea Smart Cloud technology to maintain the optimal environment for each guest.

Michael shared his original dream for the Domes: “I wanted to create a unique environmental experience where people can enjoy all the different elements of nature from a safe environment in a bubble of peace and tranquillity – I believe we have now achieved this.” The first Domes were created in 2015 but had several challenges such as misting up, being cold in winter and too hot in the summer months. Michael then started discussions with Panasonic to understand and solve these issues. With continuous prototyping and testing, the team has since adapted and improved the Dome’s comfort and experience for guests. Walter Stephens of Panasonic Ireland added “We are delighted to be part of this exciting and innovative project. The Panasonic Aquarea Mono-bloc air to water heat pump is an ideal, energy efficient solution, to heat or cool the Domes. The units have the added benefit of using the outside air and passing the air over refrigerant-filled coils (like a refrigerator). The then captured heat is automatically transferred to water, which is then ready for use in the heating or cooling system within the domes and for supplying hot water. Furthermore, the units do not require access to mains gas.” The Panasonic Aquarea heat pump technology was chosen for this project as the units easily adapt to extreme low temperatures (-20oC) and high temperatures, whatever the climate.

New-look Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik Goddard Littlefair revamps jewel of the Riviera Goddard Littlefair has completed the restoration of Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik, re-injecting golden age glamour into one of Europe’s most beautiful hotels to appeal to today’s cosmopolitan, sophisticated traveller. Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik, situated just above Dubrovnik old town, was originally built in the 1890s and went on to serve the great Mediterranean cruise liners docking in the city in the early 20th century. ‘When we were first commissioned’, commented Martin Goddard,

38

Director and Co-founder of Goddard Littlefair, ‘the hotel was already very well established and incredibly popular, with a wonderful location overlooking the old fort and the Adriatic, right on the edges of Dubrovnik’s historic old centre. Whilst it had been majorly refurbished in 2005, costly building works meant that the interiors weren’t the main priority at that time and were primed therefore for a completely new treatment.’ Goddard Littlefair was initially commissioned towards the end of 2016 for a phased set of redesign works, with the first two now completed and including the reception and lobby, The Lobby Lounge, The Imperial Bar, The Executive Lounge, all connecting

and guest-room corridors and all of the hotel’s 149 standard and executive rooms and 9 suites. A refurbishment of the hotel’s existing restaurant, Porat, on the lower-ground floor, will follow in late 2019. The brief to the design team was to unlock the true potential of the four-storey hotel’s spectacular location, architecture, reputation and history. ‘Our inspiration’ Martin Goddard commented, ‘lay in bringing back the romance of the hotel’s former glories and layering glamour into each individual space by means of a Riviera palette, soft detailing, a 1920s yachting influence and a subtle evocation of the hotel’s original elegance, whilst at the same time balancing that with clean and contemporary lines.’

Reception desk with bespoke marble-topped and timber-panelled desk with rear artwork triptych by Croatian artist Antonia Čačić

The new design scheme walk-through: Reception Guests enter via a metal revolving door into a stunning, double-height reception, with tall, arched windows and cool ceramic flooring in a bespoke two-tone diamond pattern, created by Goddard Littlefair and inspired by the old stone streets of the city. The reception is spacious, soothing and calming, so that guests relax instantly, especially during the intense heat of the summer season. The visitor’s eye is immediately taken by a spectacular central chandelier, made up of eleven, sculptural, globe-shaped and antiqued brass pendant lights, hanging from chains in rows of three on antiqued brass rods. Each

individual pendant light within the chandelier houses seven fluted, ribbed glass tubes, concealing the bulbs, with the ribbed glass treatment used matching seven bespoke vertical wall lights in the reception’s waiting area. The feature light was designed by Jana Novakovic, Interior Designer at Goddard Littlefair and was manufactured by Croatian lighting company Dekor, who worked on most of the lighting on the project. The scheme’s overall lighting consultant, especially focusing on architectural lighting, was DPA Lighting Consultants.

Corridor leading to Lounge and Bar Directly opposite the main entrance, to the far side of the reception, is a dramatic archway leading to the ground floor of the

hotel. The arch is internally-clad in panels of antiqued mirroring, which are also used for two window spaces on the internal wall of reception. The arch leads up a ten-step stair, with a curving brass handrail, to the main circulation corridor, with the eye drawn down the corridor by seven further pendant lights, identical to those used for the reception chandelier. To the right of the corridor are the main public areas, whilst to the left are a stair lobby down to the lowerground floor, where a ballroom, suite of meeting rooms and the hotel’s existing restaurant, Porat are located, all forming part of a phase three 2019/2020 redesign by Goddard Littlefair (along with an outdoor terrace, winter garden and extension to the Lobby Lounge terrace), whilst a more major stair and lift lobby give access to the upper floors and a further corridor

The Lobby Lounge and The Imperial Bar Leading off from the right of the ground floor corridor and instantly visible through a series of galleried archways are the scheme’s stunning new public spaces – The Lobby Lounge and The Imperial Bar – followed by the membersonly Executive Lounge. The entry arches are clad, as per the corridor entrance arch, in antiqued glass mirroring, with some arches serving as entrances/exits and others as feature decorative spaces, fully

inset with brass-framed shelving units that are filled with eyecatching accessories. Both public areas, which form a single, flowing space, are open all day, serving, coffees, drinks and light lunches, serviced by the bar located at the far end. The Imperial Bar, located at the far end of the space, is announced via a demarcating, stand-out brass surround screen, featuring brass shelving and fretwork panels set within its side arches and across its top section, where LED lights are also concealed. The screen was manufactured, along with all joinery, mouldings, case goods

and furniture on the project by Internova. Dark timber detailing links the screen to the dark timber used for the furniture legs. The brass screen was also speciallydesigned to house a spectacular art piece – a second commission by Croatian artist Antonia Čačić, which sits at the centre of the screen and is in fact a triptych once more. Two of its three sections sit within the screen, with one facing each way, with the third at the other end of the space, to the rear of The Lobby Lounge. Further artwork in the bar area includes a series of 12 specially-commissioned monochrome photograms of local flowers, printed as negatives and

December 2018 arranged on unique, vertical-rod brass picture rails.

The Executive Lounge Immediately beyond The Lobby Lounge and The Imperial Bar is the 88 sq m Executive Lounge, a further long and slim space, with entry through a double door. Kemper System on display at Museum of Liverpool Kemper System has helped to refurbish the Museum of Liverpool, completing a complex waterproofing project, which made the final of the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA) Awards 2018.

P

ositioned over the Leeds Liverpool canal link, the museum required remedial works, which involved removing the original terrace steps and the failed single ply waterproofing of two separate terraces. Once the original steps and terrace structure had been removed, Kemper System’s solventfree Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid waterproofing system was used by specialist contractors K Pendlebury & Sons to waterproof the original concrete slab underneath.

42

A complex steel support system was then bolted through the new waterproofed concrete slab. Further waterproofing was required comprising very specific detailing, including 672m of galvanised steel stepped beams with

approximately 200 small individual supports and more than 3,600 individual bolt heads securing the steel to the slab. Neilan Symondson from K Pendlebury said: “This was an extremely intricate job which had to be carried out in challenging weather conditions as the building is located on the waterfront. The Kemperol 2K-PUR was applied on slopes ranging from 20 to 35 degrees with very complex detailing. “As Kemperol 2K-PUR is applied wet-onwet this made it much easier for us to work around the extensive structural detailing and awkward shapes, ensuring they were waterproofed effectively. “As it’s odourless, this also assured the client that anyone visiting or working at the museum during the works wouldn’t be affected by any disruptive odours.”

Stuart Hicks from Kemper System added: “This was a complex, highprofile waterproofing project that had to meet a number of strict requirements as recognised by the independent judges of the LRWA awards. “Crucially, the application process for Kemperol 2K-PUR will ensure the waterproofing performs to the highest standards to keep the museum watertight for many years to come.” enquiries@kempersystem.co.uk www.kempersystem.co.uk

Morland Eradicate Plastic Strips From Fire Door Frames.

Plastic bags, cotton buds, plastic stirrers and straws are all on the UK Governments hit list. However the plastic encapsulated intumescent strip lives long. Too long in the opinion of both David Attenborough and Morland. With this in mind Morland have developed a fire rated door frame system, Forever Firecheck® under their patent GB2546328 where the intumescent material is held in place by the “wrap” Morland apply to their MDF Mouldings, eradicating the need for the traditional plastic encapsulation entirely. The wrap can be paper, vinyl, veneer or laminate. Tested and approved by Warrington Certifire this innovative fire safety product will be launched at UK Construction Week in October 2018. Mike Bebb, Morlands’ product manager says; “Morland have unique competencies in the reel application of decorative surfaces so it was a logical step for our factory. We now reel off the graphite strip at 25m per minute as part of our standard production process. Fitting plastic seals is a fiddly process. They flick out on the CNCs, they get lost on site, they work loose overtime and they are unsightly. At a stroke Forever Firecheck® addresses all of those shortcomings and additionally eradicates millions of linear metres of plastic use per year. What’s not to like? “ Launched at the NEC during UK Construction Week; where it was received with considerable interest, Forever Firecheck® also won the 2018 BWF Process Efficiency Award in November. Morland are very pleased to be able to bring this ground-breaking door jamb to market. To view the video, order samples or for more details visit www.morlanduk.com/foreverfirecheck To talk to us further about this innovative product – Contact Samuel Jones our marketing manager on 01938 551964 – sam.jones@morlanduk.com

Annual Review December 2018

Jenny Tragner, director at ForrestBrown

SMEs in the construction industry urged to act now to protect SME payable R&D tax credit Business owners in the construction sector are being urged to take action now to protect their SME payable research and development (R&D) tax credit. The call to action, from R&D tax credit consultancy ForrestBrown, is in response to the Chancellor’s move to prevent abuse of SME payable R&D tax credits in the Budget 2018.

52

T

his will see the Government reintroduce the PAYE and NIC cap on the SME payable R&D tax credit that was abolished in 2012. This time, from 1 April 2020, the limit will be set at 300% of the company’s total PAYE and NIC for the period. Jenny Tragner, director at ForrestBrown and a member of HMRC’s R&D Consultative Committee, is encouraging SMEs in the construction industry to think about how best to navigate this change in legislation to maximise the cash benefit they receive from R&D tax incentives. Jenny comments: “For the vast majority of businesses, R&D tax credits are a valuable source of funding that helps them to grow and prosper. Indeed, we welcome the Chancellor’s move to prevent the abuse of the SME payable R&D tax credit. We have seen first-hand the fantastic benefits that claiming R&D tax credits can deliver and so it is important this relief reaches genuinely innovative UK businesses.

December 2018 Annual Review

“However, this move means that unintentionally, early-stage innovative start-ups and companies that regularly use a contract workforce for projects could be penalised if they can’t afford to take on permanent staff. Whilst the Government thinks that this change in legislation should only impact 5% of claimants, we know that sectors like construction will feel an impact. This is particularly worrying at a time when the sector is already suffering from Brexit with project delays and cancellation, cost inflation and financing restrictions. Many businesses in this industry that regularly dial up and down different

skillsets depending on their project will be heavily weighted towards third party costs rather than salaried staff. They therefore need to think about how best to prepare for this change as a business.” Offering advice to construction businesses, Jenny adds: “The Chancellor has reintroduced the PAYE and NIC cap to drive the right behaviours amongst businesses and ensure the incentive achieve its aims: to increase private sector investment in innovation. Given that the legislation won’t kick in until after 1 April 2020, there is time to plan for this change, but it may require action now from businesses in the construction sector. “For example, whilst the new legislation won’t take affect until after 1 April 2020, we would urge companies to take

time now to reflect on how best to protect their payable R&D tax credit. “Many small business owners currently take their remuneration as a dividend due to it being more tax efficient than a salary. After this change, these entrepreneurs may instead find taking a salary more attractive if it protects their business’ payable R&D tax credit. As this is a significant change, we recommend seeking the advice of an expert like ForrestBrown. “Finally, if SMEs invest in hiring their own staff, and creating STEM jobs, the cap will not impact the cash they can receive.” ForrestBrown will be consulting on this issue with the Government, and will continue to help businesses to benefit from R&D tax credits as valuable growth fuel for their business. forrestbrown.co.uk

New research released by The IPG has revealed that nearly 75% of working plumbers experience problems with their knees, yet only 41% have discussed the issue with their GP.

75% of plumbers at risk of losing out on work due to knee problems, says The IPG Everybody has heard (and seen) the builder’s bum, but what about the plumber’s knee?

54

The study conducted by The IPG - a leading group for plumbing, heating and bathroom specialists - also discovered that 57% of plumbers surveyed felt that they would need to undergo knee replacement surgery in the future due to the hardships of the profession. 59% also felt that they would be forced to retire early because of the injuries they pick up in their work. On average, a UK plumber works 47 hours a week, with around half of that time spent on their knees. This can have a detrimental effect, especially if no protective workwear is worn. However, even with kneepads 77% specified that they still experience issues. Those who have been working for over 30 years were the ones who had the worst knee issues, with 68% stating they have had physio, keyhole surgery or other operations on their knees. However, it’s not just plumbing veterans who are experiencing problems.

December 2018 Annual Review

Dan Francis, a 34-yearold bathroom and kitchen installation technician, works for a local employer in West Sussex. His job incorporates, plumbing and tiling amongst many other things and he had also been working for just 12 years when he developed bursitis in one of his knees. He had this for eight months before one Friday morning his knee was completely inflamed causing him to be unable to walk without severe pain. When Dan visited a doctor’s surgery, the GP confirmed it was one of the worst cases of bursitis he had ever seen. Dan was prescribed high doses of antibiotics and was advised that if there were any signs of further health deterioration that he should go to hospital as there was a huge risk of sepsis. Dan said; “The pain was excruciating. I couldn’t put any weight on my affected leg and no number of painkillers were helping. One day the bursitis burst and left a massive gaping cavity in my knee.”

He was advised to take three weeks off work, however conscious of taking too much time off he went back after two even though the wound wasn’t healed fully. “In hindsight it may have been better if I took the full three weeks off as it did affect the work I was doing,” said Dan. “However, I could only receive statutory sick pay, meaning I was already losing out on my wages. I felt like I had no choice but to go back early.” Tony Dark, Director of Trade at The IPG said; “This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. We would like to urge all plumbers and installers to ensure they are using specialist protection whilst on the job, from apprentice level all the way up to those who have been working in the trade for decades. “It is also essential that if any plumber or installer starts to have any trouble with their knees that they consult a GP straight away in order to discover any possible problems early on to avoid more serious issues.”

About The IPG The IPG is a leading group specialising in providing its membership of independent plumbing, heating and bathroom specialists with access to improved purchasing terms from manufacturers and distributors, alongside marketing and business services. They believe that the independent merchant should have a voice and a better chance to compete in the market given all the challenges facing them today. They do this through improving the position of their members by using the strength, knowledge, skills and resources available with the group. The IPG was founded in 2013 and is based in Littlehampton, West Sussex. The group has already surpassed over 200 trading locations nationwide and currently works with many successful industry suppliers.

Mcavoy awarded £15 million contract to build new hospital wing in Northumbria The McAvoy Group has been awarded its largest healthcare project to date – a £15m contract for the offsite construction of a new wing at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington.

Due for completion in Spring 2019, the 6,500m2 three-storey building will be linked to the existing hospital. The first floor will be fitted out as part of this contract to accommodate one of the UK’s first purpose-designed Ambulatory Care units, with the other two floors fitted out in the next phase of the development. The Ambulatory Care Unit will provide medical, surgical and nurse practitioner-led care in a relaxed and comfortable environment, allowing up to 150 patients to be treated the same day across four specialisms, without the need for hospital admissions. This will help to de-congest the emergency department, allowing patients to be seen by the most appropriate clinician earlier and offering an enhanced service for the local community. The new wing is being constructed by McAvoy using an advanced offsite solution to reduce the build programme by half to less than 12 months. This will help Northumbria Healthcare Trust to meet the rising demand for patient services in the region and maintain its position as a world leader in emergency medicine. Commenting on the use of offsite construction, Robert Sanderson, Deputy Director of Capital Projects at Northumbria Healthcare FML said, “With this new development, the Trust is demonstrating a dynamic approach with its use of modern methods of construction. The quality of the facility to meet the clinical requirements is our main driver for a McAvoy offsite solution. We

56

December 2018 Annual Review will also benefit from a huge reduction in the build programme – from at least two years to just 12 months. This will bring enormous benefits for reducing waiting times in A&E next year and the new ambulatory care unit will enable us to assess, treat and discharge patients more quickly.”

exceptional value for money and to the Trust’s stringent quality standards. We have developed a hybrid solution which incorporates both offsite and in-situ building methods and are maximising fit-out in the factory for this first phase to enhance quality and reduce disruption to staff and patients.”

Dr Eliot Sykes, Clinical Director for Surgery and Elective Care at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said, “The new ambulatory care unit is fantastic news for the Trust and will make an immediate and very real difference to our patients. Once open, it will significantly enhance our ability to manage peaks in demand whilst still providing dedicated ambulatory care. We are very much looking forward to the project being finished and are grateful that it will be finished so quickly.”

The project features a number of innovations in offsite construction. It will use larger, bespoke modules up to 14.85m long which have been specially engineered to provide a structural flooring solution that seamlessly integrates with the existing hospital building. This will meet the key requirement for efficient patient flows, removing the need for ramps and steps.

Raymond Millar, Construction Director of The McAvoy Group, “We are again pushing the boundaries of offsite construction. This is a highly complex project on a live hospital site. We are integrating with the design of the existing hospital and using offsite construction to deliver the building to a very short programme, achieve

Mechanical ventilation, heating and cooling systems will be installed in the ceiling voids in the McAvoy factory. This is believed to be an industry first in the healthcare sector. Designed by healthcare specialists P+HS Architects working with McAvoy as principal contractor, the new wing will replicate the appearance of the existing hospital which opened in 2015. It will have a faceted external facade to create curved ends to the wing and will be finished in blue and

white render. This hybrid construction solution has a three-storey offsite structure with an in-situ built curved link on each floor, a roof-top plant room and full-height stair towers. P+HS Project Director James Almond commented, “We are delighted to be working with McAvoy on this innovative project. We have worked closely with the Trust and McAvoy on the technical and clinical challenges whilst maintaining the design ethos of the original hospital.’’ The dedicated, 2000m2 facility for ambulatory care will provide services in medicine, surgery, gynaecology and orthopaedics. Facilities include waiting areas; interview, assessment, and treatment rooms; plaster room with mobile x-ray; trolley bays; patient lounges; ultrasound; single ensuite rooms; nurse’s station; staff rest room; clinical stores; utility rooms, and an open-plan office. The scheme was awarded through the NHS Shared Business Services framework which facilitated reductions in procurement time and cost. The new wing is designed to comply with all relevant HTM and HBN requirements.

The Beautiful Island Where Life is Slow – But You Can Go as Fast as You Want Pub quiz question. Where, on a clear day, can you see all four countries that form the United Kingdom? The answer is Snaefell, the highest peak on the Isle of Man, from which it is said you can glimpse England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

58

December 2018 But if you only know one thing about the island, located in the Irish Sea, it is more likely its claim to be home to one of the world’s most famous motorsport events – the Isle of Man TT – on the “Mountain Course” where, as is the case in many parts of the island, there are no speed limits. The Mountain Road, a particularly fast section of the “Mountain Course”, is the latest in the Europe’s Greatest Driving Roads series that puts the spotlight on locations where the joy of getting about on four wheels is only matched by the scenery, the culinary delights and the hospitality offered by the locals.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/7rhlwO8c-XM “The food and drink is excellent, pretty much everywhere on the island. You may go there for the exhilaration of driving one of Europe’s most notorious roads, but it’s the people, the food and the scenery that will compound your sadness to be getting the ferry home,” said journalist Steve Sutcliffe, who was behind the wheel of the new Ford Mustang Bullitt that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the legendary Warner Bros. film of the same name.

This is the ninth instalment in the series that has already included everything from a Ford GT supercar across the stunning Atlantic Ocean Road, in Norway, to a Fiesta ST on the virtually empty Via Campocatino, in Italy. Rated on factors including thrill factor, food and road surface, the Mountain Road achieved the highest score in the series to date. Accoya® selected for the latest Ivy Collection restaurant opening The Ivy Collection, a select group of upmarket restaurants, brasseries and cafes, has recently opened its latest restaurant – The Ivy in the Park, in Canada Square Park – London. The creative design was able to successfully combine quality with sustainability with the specification of world-leading, high-performance sustainable wood, Accoya® throughout the striking new build. The new brasserie, opened to the public in mid – October 2018, was designed by esteemed architect William Conway of William Matthews Associates and, following a rigorous bid process, lead construction firm Wiehag Timber Construction were selected to build the latest eatery in the Ivy Collections’ portfolio. The new restaurant, with a two-level bar, restaurant and external dining area, is aptly positioned within one of Canary Wharf’s most sustainable areas, overlooking a vibrant green space for events.

60

December 2018 Annual Review

The Ivy in the Park is constructed from glulam and cross-laminated timber: internal members are made from spruce, whilst external beams and columns are glulam Accoya®. The specification of Accoya® wood further extended to the rainscreen trellis which covers the external walls. For the Accoya® wood elements of the project, a total of 47 glulam beams, 42 glulam columns and 740m² of rainscreen trellis were required. Wiehag GmbH machined it into the glulam beams and columns – alongside the trellis – and finished in the factory with a Remmers Aqua HSL 35 Grey Stain prior to installing on-site.

Canary Wharf Group, who has overseen the largest urban regeneration project ever undertaken in Europe, wanted timber to be used for the external façade of this project, however they needed a low maintenance solution. Naturally, Accoya® wood was the ideal choice. The result is a building that juxtaposes itself from the cold metal and glass of Canary Wharf and offers a warm, wooden home to one of the most respected restaurant institutions in London, offering accessible, allday dining in a relaxed, local setting. Accoya® wood is produced using Accsys’ proprietary acetylation process, which chemically alters the cell structure of the wood to resist distortion. Certified Cradle to Cradle™ (C2C) Gold in recognition of its sustainability credentials, Accoya® wood has the added benefit of offering peace of mind for the environmentally conscious. Accoya® wood is available to buy throughout the UK and Ireland. www.accoya.com

A flexible building structural wooden ClipHut is a parametrically generated structural system that is a direct response to Central European climate conditions and geography as well as regional building regulations. The idea for the system was developed by an interdisciplinary team at Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences in Germany. A building designed using the ClipHut system could make use of any wood-based material, however, using material-efficient KertoÂŽ LVL (laminated veneer lumber) products makes the building process fast, light and green.

system based on joints The user inputs the desired building specifications within a grid of points into the ClipHut programming software and then specifies the geographic location and the intended use of the building. The ClipHut parametric model produces shop-drawings for a kit of parts in response to the particular needs of the user. The output is a structural grid configuration with components sized to meet local building code requirements. The scale of the module, integrated numbering system and simple connections allow for easy assembly by even a layperson with limited construction experience. ClipHut buildings are also easily disassembled and reused. In an era when sustainability is one of the key requirements for construction, the ability to reuse the building parts significantly reduces waste and improves the environmental footprint of the building.

Innovative ideas shared openly ClipHut received the Open Source Wood Award with the panel of experts praising its flexibility and innovative structural system that enables faster construction.

“We started out researching wood joints and in the end developed a building system. The system respects the properties of the wood material and optimizes its use”, explains the ClipHut team in their Open Source Wood submission. The Open Source Wood Initiative by Metsä Wood is a collaborative online platform for architects and engineers to share their innovative ideas for modular wood construction. Users can upload their projects and concepts on the platform for feedback and collaboration opportunities. Metsä Wood’s experts evaluate the submissions and awards are given to the most innovative ideas, like ClipHut.

“ClipHut is the first idea I have seen where a handful of pieces could be used to construct almost any building shape. The use of plug-in connections between prefabricated components can offer fast installation on-site”, says Jussi Björman, Director of Technical Customer Service at Metsä Wood. “We can see how sustainability is part of the Metsä Wood’s mindset,” says Thomaz Viera, the system developer of ClipHut. “If we want to develop construction industry in an increasingly environmentally conscious direction, we shouldn’t only invent better products. We also have to invest in a decentralized production and distribution chain, reducing our ecological footprint, increasing productivity and investing in mass customization solutions.”

Bracing Staggering vertical connections for improved stability Vertical components are placed in each layer, providing lateral bracing that resist shear forces despite not having any diagonal components. Limiting the orientations to horizontal and vertical directions eliminated the need for complex angled connections and extra fasteners. Construction of the prototype showed that the components locked easily into each other and once each layer was complete, the structure as a whole was quite rigid as the frames worked together to provide lateral bracing.

Working with smallscale, lightweight Kerto LVL frames for a rigid structure The loads acting on the structure are transferred through a series of small-scale framing layers, with each layer measuring approximately 1 metre. All of the components are precisely cut using a CNC milling machine to the specifications from the ClipHut parametric model. The original prototype was constructed from OSB (oriented strand board) to test the parameters of the system. The team sees Kerto LVL as a particularly suitable building material for ClipHut houses, because of its higher strength and superior strength-to-weight ratio, making the assembled structure extremely stable. “Kerto LVL is of a high quality; it is tight and also stiffer than OSB and consequently the joints are able to hold more loads, allowing a bigger span between columns and reducing the need for material in some cases,” explains Viera. “Other advantages are the possibility to build higher or even add more floors to the building and also extend its life time.”

66

Pre-milled clipping connections speed up construction Horizontal plates are fabricated by a CNC milling machine with precut slots that locate the vertical components, eliminating the need for any guessing or imprecise onsite measuring. Both ends of the vertical components are milled with the innovative clipping mechanism that slides into the horizontal components and locks securely into place. “It is a clip that can be bent inwards and connects and contracts the material through a milled pocket. This connection is completely milled into the material, which means it is prefabricated only to be constructed

December 2018 Annual Review on site”, describes Jan Kahre Heidemann, professor and the project’s mentor at the University. The exact arrangement of all ClipHut elements is digitally documented and engraved on the connection during the CNC milling phase. Flexible envelope options respond to local regulations The behaviour of Kerto LVL in case of fire is well-known: the material is homogeneous and its charring rate is predictable. Design codes, especially in Europe, provide all the necessary information for safe design with LVL structures. Responding to specific local fire regulations, a building based on the ClipHut system can be clad in non-combustible materials, allowing it to house a variety of uses from residential to commercial. The system is also flexible for different climates as a variety of wall assemblies can be easily carried out. Insulation, rain screens, heating systems

and shading devices can all be incorporated in the ClipHut system. The facade is attached using small 3D printed clips that fasten to the structure with armatures, allowing for a continuous vented cavity outside of the structural grid.

An affordable and flexible constructing system using Kerto LVL From the outset the ClipHut team had a clear vision: to develop new solutions in construction that make building more accessible and

affordable. They achieve this by giving the ownership of design and documentation back to the user. “This means you don’t get the ready pieces delivered; instead you can then go with the file in hand to a carpenter or company, which can produce it. Otherwise, if you have access to certain machines, such as CNC or 3D printers, you can produce it yourself,” explains Maria Wilkens, the project manager of ClipHut. The innovative clipping connection allows for quick and easy construction and the use of Kerto LVL ensures an economy of materials and reduces the overall building costs. “Each material will bring advantages” explains Viera, “Kerto LVL, for sure, has all the properties needed to create a proper house and we are looking forward to building it!” For more information please visit www.metsawood.com

Dr. Martens combines durability, flexibility and comfort for new footwear collection. Iconic footwear brand Dr. Martens is continuing to spearhead innovation throughout the work footwear category, with the launch of its Cubeflex boot, its most flexible welted product ever.

A

unique outsole fuses Dr. Martens welted construction with lightweight cushioning materials to deliver multi-directional flex, slip resistance and enhanced comfort. In a survey conducted of 560 professionals working within the trade industry by On The Tools and Dr. Martens, 92.9% said that comfort was their main priority. Foot Fatigue is typically caused by an imbalance in the footwear or if the boots are too toe-heavy, potentially leading to sore shins, shin splints and other muscle fatigue. Jon Marchant, Global Category Director at Dr. Martens said: “Workers today demand greater comfort, reliability and durability without sacrificing the necessary levels of protection. In manual trade, workers spend much of their time on their feet and are likely to be lifting heavy materials as part of their job. Wearing the correct and comfortable footwear is especially important in order to prevent serious injury.” The Britton 7-tie Gibson-cut boot combines durability and flexibility for a dynamic work style that has comfort at its core. Its new engineered Cubeflex sole provides multi-directional flex to move with the foot for enhanced comfort and support on unstable ground, while Dr. Martens resilient

welted construction ensures the footwear is tough and built to last. The SoftWair™ sock liner combined with multi-density PU and EVA midsole components achieve superior levels of user comfort featuring increased arch support, improved breathability and supportive heel cup. “I am really excited about the general future of the industry and what it means for Dr. Martens. Improving standards and regulations will drive consumers towards quality, reputable brands. As a brand we will continue to strive for innovative, product solutions with a focus on comfort,” concluded Jon. For more information regarding Dr. Martens, please visit: www.drmartens.com
