Mace submits plans for £100m Harwell research project duo Mace has lodged plans to build two major research facilities at the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire.
The two facilities costing around £100m to build will be delivered over the next three years. The first project is the new Rosalind Franklin Institute, named after the pioneering woman scientist who paved the way for the discovery of the molecular structure of DNA by Crick and Watson. It will bring together academic and industry researchers to tackle major challenges in health and life sciences and accelerate the discovery of new treatments for chronic diseases affecting millions of people around the world, such as dementia.
04
The second project on the Harwell research campus is the National Satellite Testing Facility. The new facility will enable UK companies to develop the next generation launch technologies and testing capabilities to allow the UK to construct satellites and deliver payloads into orbit, capitalising
on the estimated 3,500 – 10,000 satellites that are due to be launched by 2025. This will be built in two phases with two distinct buildings R114 and R100. Hoare Lee has delivered MEP design with Aecom also is providing project management and cost consultancy support for both building facilities. The Harwell Campus is a public-
private partnership between Harwell Oxford Partners, U+I Group PLC, the Science and Technology Facilities Council and the UK Atomic Energy Agency. As one of the world’s most important science and innovation locations, it is seeing rapid growth in the Life Sciences and HealthTec sector with over 1,000 people working in this field alone at Harwell.

September 2018 Industry News
Construction work is on the up but still underperforming The value of new construction contracts in July reached £4.6 billion, a 6.5% increase compared to June and the first month to see growth since March. However, the two largest sectors, residential and infrastructure, continued their slump in July with much lower activity levels, decreasing by 28% and 24% respectively compared to the same time in 2017. The latest edition of the Economic and Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI highlights levels of construction contract values awarded across Great Britain. The largest project in July was the £650m House of Commons Northern Estate Refurbishment Programme (see table above), more than five times the value of the second largest project on the month. With only four of the top ten largest projects having a value of over £100 million, there is a distinct lack of ‘mega projects’ that the sector is typically accustomed to. Across the sectors, commercial and retail projects saw the biggest jump in figures, with a 67% spike in contract value compared to the previous month. This is largely thanks to the aforementioned House of Commons
Northern Estate Refurbishment Programme and the sector having three of the four largest construction projects in July. The remainder of the industry was a mixed bag, with the education sector increasing contract value by 20%, whereas medical and health construction disappointingly decreased by 44% on the month. Regionally it was London that led all locations for contract value in July, with 27.5% of the total, a much larger proportion than recently seen in the capital across 2018. Following London was the North West with 10.8% and then Yorkshire and Humberside with 9.4%. Commenting on the figures, Michael Dall, lead economist at Barbour ABI, said: “Whilst it’s encouraging that the total value of construction contracts increased in July, the sector is still considerably underperforming compared with the figures seen in 2016 and 2017. Part of the issue could be attributed to the lack of ‘mega projects’, particularly in the residential and infrastructure sectors, as the value has been considerably hindered so far in 2018 with, of course, Brexit playing its part, as confidence continues to fall and developers and investors hold back on big construction investments.”
Galliford Try wins £29m sports science centre contract race Galliford Try has is starting work on a new £29.3m contract to build a teaching and research centre at Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley campus. Work will see the creation of a new home for the Carnegie School of Sport. It will include research laboratories, an indoor rooftop sprint track for performance training and analysis and a roof walking track and terrace. Cliff Wheatley, Managing Director for Galliford Try North East and Yorkshire, said: “We are delighted to be working with Leeds Beckett on such a prestigious project. “We have a proven track record in providing highquality buildings for higher education and we look forward to working with the University to ensure that their students and staff have the world-class sports science facilities they demand.” Professor Peter Slee, Vice-chancellor of Leeds Beckett University, said: “This £45m world-class facility will underline our global reputation for delivering highimpact sports teaching and research. “It is part of a wider £200m programme of investment across our campuses which will further increase the positive contribution we make to our city region and beyond.”

Vivalda Group plc sees 19% growth in 2017 The UK’s leading supplier of rainscreen cladding systems, Vivalda Group plc, has confirmed strong growth for the year ending December 2017, with its turnover increasing by 19% to £31m. Despite the chronic under performance of the construction sector, the Grenfell Tower tragedy, Brexit and the impact of the Carillion collapse, Vivalda has continued to grow its business via a twin track strategy of unrivalled product quality and service to satisfy the needs of the expanding off-site fabrication market. The business, which now boasts eight locations throughout the UK and Ireland, took the decision last year to stock only fully certified cladding products – providing assurance and building trust among specifiers and contractors. The company has also invested more than £250,000 in new technology, enabling it to supply finished products to the fastgrowing off-site building fabrication sector. Vivalda’s chairman, Peter Johnson, said: “Given ongoing challenges facing the building industry the past 18 months have not been easy for many businesses. “And yet despite this – by sticking to our strategy of investing in technology, people and our customers – we have continued to grow our company by nearly 20% year on year. At the same time, we have also been pleased to see our PURA Facades business go from strength to strength, on the back of sustained demand for its range of natural cladding products using stone, terracotta and glass reinforce concrete.” Voted in 2018 by the London Stock Exchange as one of the ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain’, Vivalda has not been afraid to innovate and invest to differentiate itself from other rainscreen cladding distributors.
08
While the company’s turnover has continued to increase, so has the productivity of the business. Based on its 2017 accounts, Vivalda’s value added per employee* comes in at £94.300, which according to the UK Industry Performance Report (2016) is more than £30,000 above the construction sector average of £63,700. Johnson concluded: “While a healthy top line figure is always good to see, this is only the tip of the iceberg as far as business performance is concerned. During 2017, we worked hard to improve our productivity and accuracy, while reducing our waste. We’re very much behind the focus of the government’s new Construction Deal and believe that the attention on efficiency and productivity is vital to the long-term health of this vital UK industry.”

Morgan Sindall wins £60m newlook motorway services landscape. Work will start shortly and will sustain 400 jobs during the construction phase. Morgan Sindall’s managing director for the North, Barry Roberts, said: “We are really excited about working with Extra to deliver this phase of the project, realising the vision that has been set out by our customer. Morgan Sindall has clinched the main building contract for a new concept £60m Motorway Service Area at Junction 45 of the M1. To be named Leeds Skelton Lake Services, the project has been designed with exposed long-span glulam timber beams and a ‘living green roof’ to blend with the natural landscape.
Extra MSA Group’s new-look motorway services facility will also include a new food court-style building, which will provide a wide range of food and ancillary retail outlets, a business centre, filling station and 100-bed hotel. There will also be an upperfloor viewing deck overlooking Skelton Lake and the surrounding
“This is a major investment for the region and we will do everything we can to support and work closely with Extra to create jobs and offer opportunities to local people and companies during the construction works.” The project is due to be completed in time for a Summer 2019 opening.
Pipefitters paid to do nothing on Crossrail Teams of pipefitters have been paid to do nothing in the panic to meet Crossrail’s busted deadline. Site sources told the Enquirer that the workers were even having their accommodation bills paid without ever having set foot on the site. One source said: “When the word came down to get things done at all costs everything was thrown at the job. Contractors needed pipefitters but not straight away – but once they found them they were scared of losing them to another job. So they were put on standby on full pay and had their lodge taken care of.” Spending details are emerging after the Enquirer revealed a costs row is brewing between contractors and Crossrail after it was confirmed the project will be at least nine months late. The source said: “Even with the work completed there’s a load of huge bills in the system that both sides are going to be arguing over.” Transport for London Commissioner Mike Brown told a London Assembly hearing yesterday that the total amount of additional construction costs was still not known.

Workforce productivity: What makes a good GPS tracking system? “If a GPS system helped you take on one extra job per week, and if overtime payments could be reduced by a couple of hours per week, what would your return be per employee?”
L
andscape contracting is labour intensive. With many vehicles, drivers and sites to manage, and customers spanning a wide radius, a popular tool for improving workforce productivity is GPS tracking. A good tracking system doesn’t just tell you where your vehicles are, it provides information that is directly relevant to your business operations. The following points will help you choose a system with the strongest reporting capabilities:
1. Which reports will I need to improve productivity and operating costs? Accurate timesheets teamed with late arrival and early departure alerts will reduce undue overtime claims and ensure your customers get the hours of service that they pay for. Matt O’Conner, Managing Director of John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance advises “Quartix vehicle tracking lets you take control of your fleet, improve operational efficiency and manage costs, safety and time.” Tracking reports also provide proof of attendance on-site, and the data is useful in response to customer queries.
2. Which reports can identify actions needed to lower fuel costs? To help your drivers become more fuel efficient, you must know how your vehicles are being driven. Reports that include daily route logs, driving style reports with acceleration and braking metrics and geofencing alerts to flag unauthorised journeys and unwarranted use of company fuel can help. “It doesn’t happen often, but if a driver does use our vehicle at a non-agreed time, we will see that on the system,” says Julie Renshaw of John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance. Helping a driver to improve their driving style can lower fuel costs significantly, in fact by up to 25% (Frost and Sullivan 2015).
16
September 2018 External Works & Landscaping www.landscapeshow.co.uk
3. What other fleet insights can help reduce costly overheads? Real-time vehicle utilisation reports, often extending to ride-on equipment, ensure fewer vehicles are out of action and reduce unnecessary costs. Keeping all your fleet on the road will help to increase your capacity to service and charge customers. Some tracking systems also allow you to set up vehicle MOT, service and maintenance reminders. One of the reasons that Worcestershire-based Whiting Landscape opted for Quartix vehicle tracking was to monitor staff remotely. With most work completed on customer premises, the company could unknowingly lose a lot of money if staff were to leave early or arrive late. Quartix also offers the ability to identify your nearest vehicle to a postcode, so that you can best deal with requests in real-time. In one instance a John O’Conner driver had unintentionally parked a company van in an unsafe place. With this feature of the system, staff were able to quickly identify the driver and contact him about the issue.
4. How will a GPS tracking system support and help my drivers? The contracting market is competitive, and it’s critical to keep operational costs low and ensure quotes are competitive to help the business grow. Share these motivations with your workforce and encourage them to embrace GPS tracking by introducing incentives for exemplary driving behaviour, e.g. most improved driving style or most jobs completed on time. John O’Conner runs a staff incentive scheme, whereby the two best scoring drivers receive cash prizes each month, provided all drivers meet a certain standard. Your drivers are also well covered when it comes to false claims about their driving or punctuality. “Quartix vehicle tracking actually works in our drivers’ defence, it’s their personal protection in case of unfair claims”, Matt O’Conner explains. Drivers can be given access to their own tracking data and driving scores via the Quartix mobile app. This provides immediate feedback on their daily trips and lets them take control of their own progress.
With Quartix, short-term and rolling contracts offer you optimum flexibility - should your number of vehicles change, you aren’t tied in for several years. If you have a fleet of 40+ vehicles, special rates and longer-term contracts are optional. To learn how Quartix can help your business visit www.quartix.net, email enquiries@quartix.net, or call 01686 806 663.

In terms of the standard Plantex® Platinium product this has been achieved by:
Invented and manufactured by DuPont, Plantex® Platinium has undergone numerous and rigorous tests by the company’s Research & Development team. Over several years and in natural environments, it has demonstrated powerful resistance to weed penetration,
“DuPont originally developed Plantex® Platinium with a special focus on Japanese Knotweed, to address the increasing problem of invasive weeds spreading across Europe,” explains Carl Festré, EMEA Marketing Manager, Typar® and Plantex®, “the next phase has been to optimise and diversify the product, tailoring it carefully to more specific requirements or applications.”
• Giving the fabric an enhanced surface structure through the addition of a special bonding treatment that generates even greater resistance to Japanese Knotweed
• Adapting the UV resistance of the fabric to 3 years according to the limited product warranty to suit the installation and site requirements for the more typical use of the product. In standard applications, the fabric must be covered with at least 20 cm of gravel or soil and therefore requires only the appropriate UV protection to span the installation process – rather than the kind needed if the fabric will be exposed to direct sunlight over a long period of time.
Advantages of Plantex® Platinium • Easy, quick and worry-free installation with immediate and long-term results. Lightweight, Plantex® Platinium is available in widths of 2.5m and of 5m which requires fewer joints when covering large surface areas, thus reducing labour time and minimising potential points of vulnerability. greenhouse effect and improving soil health.
• Exceptional resistance to damage or tearing, which is particularly important during installation. Furthermore, the high integral strength of Plantex® Platinium ensures that the strands and filaments of the fabric will not fray or become displaced once installed.
• Offer a vital solution to EU regulations and UK HSE. Both UK and EU regulations will very likely limit or even prohibit the use of pesticides in the near future. Today, there is increasing awareness of the value of Plantex® Platinium as an economical, ecological and aesthetic solution for the protection of sensitive areas such as drinking water zones.
• Excellent water permeability which prevents the build-up of differential hydrostatic pressures, as can occur with a closed membrane system, and eliminates the need for additional drainage systems. • This highly effective water vapour and air permeability also supports the balance and natural processes of condensation and flow in the covered soil, avoiding mildew growth from trapped humidity beneath the fabric, so reducing any
A complete solution from DuPont Experts appreciate the complex challenges of eradicating Japanese knotweed. Thus, DuPont has combined a premium offering of advanced products and expertise into a complete solution to the nuisance of invasive plants. This consists of: Plantex® Platinium to control the plants above ground, plus Plantex® RootProtector and
Plantex® RootBarrier to confine the root and rhizomic systems, together with a clear-cut installation guide to ensure that adjacent runs will be impenetrable to unwanted roots. Only by working with such comprehensive products and guidelines can invasive plants be beaten.
The Future is bright for Solar Farms Alongside this typical-use offering, DuPont now also offers a specialised version of the fabric called Plantex® Platinium Solar. This product is dedicated to uncovered applications such as solar farms, or other such sensitive technical installations, where weed control presents particular challenges or can cause safety issues. Plantex® Platinium Solar can be left uncovered under UV radiation for 8 years according to the limited product warranty, thus reducing both installation costs and maintenance in the long run.

Accoya® wood’s low maintenance requirements mean it can be used for numerous exterior applications.
It can be used for virtually any joinery project and is a perfect solution for exterior cladding, siding and façades where aesthetics, less frequent maintenance, dimensional stability, durability and insulation value are key factors. Plus, for window frames, Accoya® wood is the material of choice. Not only does it have extremely low thermal conductivity but it matches or exceeds the durability and dimensionally stability of the best tropical hardwoods. It can be opaque coated or, for those wishing to enjoy the natural look of wood, translucent coated. Accoya® wood’s low maintenance requirements add to its cost effectiveness and environmental credentials.
Accoya® wood is also perfect for exterior cladding.

Medite®Tricoya® Extreme This panel exhibits outstanding durability and dimensional stability, allowing it to be used in applications once limited to products such as concrete, plastics or metals. With the added benefits of light weight, sustainable raw materials and a guarantee of up to 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground, Medite®Tricoya® Extreme provides architects, specifiers and designers with an entirely new construction material, allowing greater design flexibility and endless opportunities for creativity.
Medite®Tricoya® Extreme was used in the door, window and even signage of this shop front.
The combination of acetylated wood fibre with the manufacturing technology of Medite MDF means it can be used in situations and applications where normal MDF panels cannot. However, it maintains all the design, fixing and machining flexibility of medium density fibreboards. Using sustainably sourced FSC® timber, Medite®Tricoya® Extreme is made using a highperformance resin which has zero added formaldehyde in its formulation, ensuring the product is also suitable for environmentally sensitive areas. James Latham’s Technical Timber Sales Development Manager, Justin Hayward explained, “These products offer ground breaking levels of performance in both stability and durability as well as outstanding environmental standards and they are fast becoming recognised by architects, joiners, specifiers and the construction industry as the materials of choice for exterior applications.“

arangaroo House, a free-standing, threestory restaurant, has become one of the first projects in Sydney to utilise Accoya® wood cladding, the world-leading high performance, sustainable wood product, and the distinctive Japanese charring technique, Shou Sugi Ban. Situated in the heart of Barangaroo, a dynamic commercial and residential urban renewal project on the edge of Sydney Harbour, Barangaroo House opened in December 2017 and is the latest venture by one of Australia’s most celebrated chefs, Matt Moran. The Barangaroo project has sustainability at its heart. With a commitment to becoming the first global precinct that is carbon neutral, the 22-hectare historically significant harbourside site is concerned with creating zero waste emissions, being ‘water wise’ and contributing to the overall well-being of the community. As a result, the internationally recognised mission celebrates design excellence, natural beauty, world-class eco-living and its aboriginal history to preserve the project for future generations.
Inspired by the potential of creating a building in the round, the unique split level restaurant was designed by architects, Collins and Turner, taking on a remarkable organic form clad in charred Accoya®. Supplied by leading timber experts, Britton Timbers, 45mm of Dowelled Accoya® and 45mm of Half Dowelled Accoya® were laminated into a series of predetermined radii with a Shou Sugi Ban (medium char) finish applied to create a striking charcoal appearance. To further enhance the project, a layer of “Anthractite” a WOCA coating from Denmark was applied to compliment the overall design aesthetic. Due to Accoya®’s
superior dimensional stability, this coating will last twice as long in comparison to typical timbers, and will need minimal maintenance. The Accoya® wood cladding was then screw fixed to specially made aluminium anodised brackets to ensure the dowels were evenly spaced throughout the stable structure. Located on a prominent water front site, Accoya® was the the ideal choice for this stunning project thanks to its exceptional durability, reliability and stability properties. With a guarantee of 50 years above ground, Accoya® wood can withstand the harshest of external environments while resisting distortion and warping over its lifetime. Andrew Elston, Commerical Specifications Account Manager at Britton Timbers, commented: “In the Australian sun and surrounding elements of wind and salt air, we knew Accoya® was a material we could really rely on. It provided complete peace of mind with regards to its performance, its stability and its durability factors.” Huw Turner, Director of Collins and Turner, said: “It was wholeheartedly agreed that Accoya® would be the best solution for a long term outcome due to its hardwearing, versatile nature. Utilising Shou Sugi Ban was an ideal way to create a unique, striking building form which references ancient craftsmanship and traditions in a very contemporary
way. Along with the low maintenance requirements, the sustainability factor of Accoya® also significantly appealed to us and our client.” The Barangaroo reserve is no stranger to Accoya®. The R7 Tower,a landmark building within Barangaroo, used Accoya® wood cladding to create decorative external boxes on the façade of the buildings. Accoya® was selected primarily for its high performance factors and resilience but also for its ability to enhance the visual appearance of the building. Furthermore, Accoya® was the material of choice for outdoor seating within the heart of the Barangaroo oasis. Aesthetically pleasing but also exceptionally durable and rot resistant, the benches suit the natural surroundings while being perfectly capable of withstanding the extreme Sydney climate. Accoya® wood is produced using Accsys Group’s proprietary acetylation process, which chemically alters the cell structure of the wood to resist distortion. Certified Cradle to Cradle™ (C2C) Gold in recognition of its sustainability credentials, Accoya® wood has the added benefit of offering peace of mind for the environmentally conscious. Accoya® wood is available to buy throughout the UK and Ireland. www.accoya.com.

Making Waves at Rossall Coastal Defence Ecology Park Three bridges with unique ‘wave’ style parapets were installed by CTS Bridges Ltd in the Mythic Coast inspired Ecology Park as part of the Rossall Coastal Protection Scheme. Artist Stephen Broadbent of Broadbent Studios was responsible for the design of the ecology park and his concept for the bridges required the parapets to have a wave effect made from hardwood spindles. CTS worked with Balfour Beatty and Broadbent Studios to develop the design into a buildable solution for the three bridges. Twelve spindles formed one wave effect and each of the ekki hardwood spindles were cut from a larger timber section to achieve the exact shape required. Once cut they were numbered prior to being methodically fitted by our joiners.
The Ekki hardwood deck has Hi-Grip Excel non-slip inserts to provide a slip resistant surface on the multi use bridges. The three bridges were manufactured by CTS at their factory in Huddersfield prior to being delivered and installed on site in time for the opening of the Coastal Flood Defence scheme carried out by Balfour Beatty for Wyre Council in partnership with the Environment Agency. Tradespeople say heat is forcing them to down tools, and call for on-site water stations Apart from the recent thunder storms, Britain’s summer has so far proven to be a very un-British scorcher. With temperatures hitting sweltering highs, spare a thought for the bricklayers, carpenters and other tradespeople that have to work outside, and who have already had to endure the bitter Beasts from the East earlier this year. To find out how people on the country’s construction sites are handling the heat, the UK’s largest online supplier of ironmongery, IronmongeryDirect, has carried out a poll among its customers – mainly sole traders and small businesses.
30
The research reveals that almost 40% of respondents have been prevented from completing a job because of the hot weather. As many are self-employed, they are likely to be feeling the impact of any heat-induced pauses in work through loss of income. Their professional reputation can also take a battering despite making decisions to leave the site for safety reasons.
A Met Office spokesperson added: “We would urge high-risk groups including tradespeople to follow the Public Health England advice to take care in the sun, especially when temperatures are potentially reaching 30 degrees or more throughout this week - either stay out of the sun or be sensible and don’t go out in the strongest sunshine hours which are 11am to 3pm.”
questioned whether more should be done to protect tradespeople in extraordinary weather conditions: “This heatwave has been more prolonged and relentless than anything I can remember. With it not beyond the realms of possibility for this type of weather to become more frequent, I think it’s vitally important for tradespeople to receive more protection.”
In addition, half of the survey respondents felt that water stations should be introduced on-site to help them keep cool at work.
The heatwave is not all bad news. It has resulted in more work for builders - 25% of poll participants said they are being asked to install more swimming pools and 1 in 2 have noticed a higher demand for outdoor decking.

Following extensive research and testing over the past two years in the UK and Scandinavia, this year PoolLock is excited to introduce its new HeatLock Thermofoam canvas with enhanced insulation properties. Thanks to the foamed insulation layer applied to one side of the canvas, heat transfer across the membrane is reduced by a factor of 3 when compared to standard fabrics for similar applications. HeatLock’s closed-cell foam structure ensure that PoolLock covers are not only the safest, but also the most energy-efficient available on the market. PoolLock’s unique hydraulic-drive system means that you do not need to have any electrical components near your pool. The electrical power pack used to operate the cover and drive the two hydraulic motors can be placed as far from the pool as required. Opening and closing the pool is as easy as turning a key switch, which means that the cover (and the pool) are actually used once installed. PoolLock safety covers provide a solid barrier between the water and surrounding area, effectively preventing any access to the water and making them the safest covers on

South Bank Tower, a new residential development by independent real estate firm CIT, is a London landmark building and the former HQ of publishing giants IPC Media. The 41-storey building has been extended upwards under CIT’s direction (it was originally built in 1972 as a 30-storey tower) and its layout and interior architecture completely redesigned by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. Leading luxury interior designers Goddard Littlefair have now completed a stunning, three-bed, 220 sq m duplex apartment within the new upper floors of the development, located on a prime, west-facing corner on levels 36 and 37. hen it came to the interiors concept, the Goddard Littlefair design team sought to give the luxurious apartment character and detail through a sophisticated design scheme, which respects the building’s modernist heritage in terms of style, exercises restraint via simple forms and expresses a version of bespoke luxury that is revealed over time through subtlety and precise detailing. At the outset, Goddard Littlefair created the most dynamic layout

Littlefair designs award-winning Apartment in London’s South Bank Tower possible to capitalise on the apartment’s spectacular views. This involved installing tall screens to create interest, subtle zoning and delineation within the doubleheight space. The screens measure 6.195m x 0.7m and have a liquefied bronze finish; each one was made in three sections and then assembled on site. The apartment is arranged around a stunning, double-height living space, from where the view of the evening sunset over London’s west end through the huge-scale glass
windows is spectacular and formed the initial design inspiration for the scheme, expressed in a colour spectrum of rusts and ochres, together with a secondary palette of greys, oysters and soft blues. To make the view absolutely central, a formal seating area was arranged right up against the glass with no TV screen. A striking hanging sculpture in the living space is a central feature of the design. Strong, beautiful, transparent and designed by Goddard Littlefair in conjunction with Jona Hoad, this beautiful sculpture compliments
the interior colour scheme by refracting warm hues across the space as its catches the sun’s light. The lounge area features completely bespoke furniture by Goddard Littlefair, including a contemporary, low-backed sofa with inset pads, rolled bolsters and recessed piping, upholstered in a burnt orange velvet from Elitis. Lights to either side of the sofa are by Donghia, featuring special shades with an acrylic diffuser covering section, so that the bare bulb can’t be seen from above. Curtains here and throughout are very light and neutral, using oyster silk wool, together with ivory sheers. Goddard Littlefair Creative Director Richard McCready-Hughes explained ‘We didn’t want to compartmentalise the view or create any internal competition with it, so when it came to dressing the floor-to-ceiling glazing, the curtains we chose offer only a slight softening and insulation, in order to add warmth but not obscure the view.’ Directly behind the living area is a library space, demarcated by a bespoke, marble-topped console in Noir St Laurent marble, with striking veins of orange, black and grey, along with a chair by Giogetti. A freestanding bookcase to the rear of the library area was bespoke-

To the side of the library area is a seating/contemplation zone, with a Giogetti chair and footstool in soft tan leather and a small ‘origami’ table with a bronzed section. Here, the floor lamp is from Porta Romana, whilst a large white pot on the floor is from Jo Littlefair London. The wallcovering in this area is a striae silk in grey (Michigan 62-707 by Stereo Wallcoverings). To the right of the living area, also facing directly onto the Thames, the open-plan section of the lower floor of the apartment continues into a dining area, with a bespoke round dining table in book-matched walnut. ‘This is quite a contemporary detail, with the bookmatching done in quarters’, Richard McCready-Hughes noted, adding that ‘the table, which seats six, also features a scalloped edge and fine detailing to the legs.’ Chinaware is by Kelly Wearstler. The first enclosed area on this floor is a winter garden space, designed as a mini-orangerie or contemporary version of a classic garden room. It includes a vertical living wall of succulents, giant lanterns and planters on the floor and has been dressed as an inside-outside study, with a comfortable armchair, side-table, cushion, throw and rug, making it the perfect spot to read a book in the fresh air (via sliding glass doors) and take in the stunning view of the Thames and London’s roof tops beyond.
Warm oak flooring throughout works well with the burnt orange colour scheme, with copper accessories – especially in the kitchen area - and detailing completing the theme of warmth. Copper is used within the central hanging sculpture and in a band around the Baroncelli chandelier over the dining table. Warmth is added in signature Goddard Littlefair style throughout via the layering of accessories, which include a range of handcrafted ceramic pinch pots with gold or copper detailing from Jo Littlefair London and pieces by Tom Dixon. Artwork throughout the apartment makes witty reference to the building’s former life as King’s Reach Tower, the home of IPC Media, with iconic magazine covers

that it might face out towards the view, putting in extra closet space at the same time and extending the dressing room.
Art elsewhere in the scheme makes reference to cubist and modernist influences, such as the bronze ‘Rising Structure’ by Antonio Lopez Reche, located in the dining area and displayed on a Jo Littlefair London ‘Pimlico’ plinth. The scheme also features speciallycommissioned artworks by Louise Seabrook, who also acted as the project’s art consultant.
The master bedroom features a tranquil colour scheme, including lilacs, pinks, greys and deep aubergines, plus a bedspread and ombre-effect throw. A large-scale embroidered ‘sunburst’ artwork headboard above the bed picks up on this colourway and features lilacs and bronze.
On the upper floor of the duplex are two generous bedrooms, both en suite, along with a dressing room. Goddard Littlefair re-orientated the master bedroom from the original space plan so

the bedside cabinet lights were bespoke-made by Donghia to a Goddard Littlefair design. ‘The bedside lights are made from black marble and wood’, Richard McCready-Hughes commented, ‘with a geometric cubist feel, again referencing the modernist heritage of the building.’ The guest bedroom has a stronger colour scheme, taking the sunset colours from the floor below and mixing them with teals and greens. Gateway Tower, Royal Victoria
When the Royal Victoria Dock finally closed to commercial shipping during the 1980s, it resulted in widespread dereliction and unemployment in that part of East London. At the time it would have been totally inconceivable that just over a generation later, the Royal Victoria would witness such remarkable and vibrant change. The latest landmark and part of the £1.2 billion transformation masterplan, is Gateway Tower (previously Pump Tower), just a few hundred yards west of the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. With its striking series of curved forms, it is an intriguing example of modern urban design. The 73 metre high, 24-storey mixed-use scheme provides 161 spaciously designed apartments and penthouses, with office and retail space at ground level sitting over an underground car park. Each apartment features a terrace, a winter garden style ‘sun lounge’, or a balcony. The design specifications on the project were demanding and the avoidance of thermal bridging at any of the critical connectivity points was naturally a key consideration. To counter any such problems, the widely used Schöck Isokorb structural thermal break element for concreteto-concrete applications was incorporated – but there was an installation challenge or two.

ony challenge in Docklands Curved façade meant a tight radius
Totally verifiable performance
The first being that there was a tight radius in which to position the thermal breaks, due to the unusual curved styling on the façade. To resolve the issue, the Schöck Isokorbs were supplied with alternating depths of rebar and 35 mm and 50 mm concrete cover to the tension bars. This allowed the rebar in the Isokorb to sit underneath the internal slab reinforcement and not clash with the bars from the Isokorbs on either side of each unit. In addition, Schöck also had to create a bespoke unit for one of the balcony types, where a beam was introduced to the balcony by the Structural Engineer, to reduce the deflection of the slab. The thermal break had to both connect the beam back to the slab, which required a bespoke unit in itself and also connect the beam at an angle to the insulation line.
The product type used at Gateway Tower is for concrete-to-concrete, but the comprehensive Isokorb range from Schöck also offers solutions for concrete-tosteel situations, a modular product for steel-to-steel applications – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. When any Isokorb product type is incorporated into residential buildings, the required fRsi value – the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk that must be equal to or greater than 0.75 – is always comfortably met. The range also complies with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP

Modern Construction and Overheating We have all experienced one of the hottest summers that the UK has had since 1977 and in its recently published report ‘Heatwaves: adapting to climate change’, the Environmental Audit Committee has called for tougher rules to ensure homes can deal with extreme heat. “The Environmental Audit Committee warns of 7,000 heat-related deaths every year in the UK by 2050 and also complains about a lack of regulation to prevent overheating in buildings” say representatives from Modern Masonry. As homes become more highly insulated, it is less easy for unwanted heat to escape during the summer months, resulting in a greater risk of overheating; a problem that is further compounded by a warming climate.
44
Alongside adequate ventilation and shading, the thermal mass
provided by concrete and masonry construction offers another means of tackling overheating. Concrete and masonry’s thermal mass allows it to absorb and later release excess heat, helping smooth out the gains and stabilise the internal temperature. Heat stored in concrete and masonry is expelled at the end of the day by ventilating the building with cool night air. The combined benefit of thermal mass and night ventilation is accounted for in the SAP overheating check, which allows a reduction in the peak internal temperature of up to 3.5°C compared to an equivalent
lightweight dwelling with night ventilation. Overheating in homes is increasing for two key reasons: 1. Summertime temperatures are gradually rising as our climate continues to warm. 2015 was the warmest year on record and the Met Office is predicting a temperature increase of around 3°C in the south of England over the 21st century. 2. There is a greater tendency for modern, highly insulated and airtight homes to overheat as heat is more easily trapped.
September 2018 Commercial Design Tom de Saulles, Building Physicist at The Concrete Centre offers his view: “As you would expect, the masonry and concrete sector has for many years highlighted the role of thermal mass in helping address overheating in homes and the dangers of lightweight construction. Numerous organisations have also published design guidance on overheating that acknowledges the role thermal mass can play in helping tackle the issue. The collective understanding of all these organisations underpins the masonry and concrete sector’s messaging on thermal mass. Some examples of these reports and design guidance are:
The use of thermal mass has become well established and is one of a number of good practice design techniques that can be employed to reduce the growing risk of overheating. Its use ranks highly in the London Plan hierarchy of overheating measures, which designers and architects should apply to new buildings. When it comes to modern construction, modern masonry homes can be designed to minimise the risk of overheating by deploying the thermal mass and other design measures whilst also delivering

the highest levels of energy efficiency for heating in winter. Factory production or offsite construction does not in itself result in a greater risk of overheating. Concrete offsite solutions will have thermal mass, and this can be used with other design measures to reduce peak temperatures and likelihood of overheating. Conversely most timber and steel offsite solutions have low thermal mass and hence can only draw on the other measures in the hierarchy and are therefore more likely to overheat.

Healing communities - Vivalda supports BBC SOS Grenfell project A big-hearted team from Vivalda, the UK’s largest supplier of external cladding, recently lent a hand to support a hugely worthwhile BBC DIY project, supporting the local community in the wake of the Grenfell fire.
When the company’s London branch, in nearby Royal Park, was approached by BBC producers to fabricate and supply fascia board to clad the renovated Dale Youth Boxing Club and a brand new community centre, the answer was a resounding yes. Gary Fitzgerald, regional director at Vivalda’s London branch, said: “Given the fact that we’re based just a stone’s throw from Grenfell we didn’t have to think twice to support this cause. The lads at the branch really pulled out all the stops to ensure we gave 100 per cent – working after hours and coming in over the course of several weekends to get the job done.”
48
Working in close co-operation with the BBC’s build team and cladding manufacturer Marley Eternit, the Vivalda team cut-to-size and prepared almost 150 sheets of high performance, non-combustible architectural panels for the two projects.
Entitled “DIY SOS: Grenfell” the two programmes will be broadcast on BBC1 on Wednesday 5 and 12 September at 9.00pm. The first episode will tell the story of the building of a new home for Dale Youth Boxing Club and the second programme the following week will tell the story of building a new community centre. Peter Johnson, chairman of Vivalda Group plc said: “This was an emotional and sensitive project for us to be involved with. I was delighted to be able to give any support we could to these two projects and was humbled to attend their opening ceremonies when I was able to meet with Nick Knowles, the build crew and also members of the local community. Somehow it seemed fitting that the cladding was produced in a factory visible from Grenfell and worked on by Vivalda staff who live nearby.”

As well as the outstanding features of our existing NT vacuum cleaners, these new models also include: electronic filter detection and air flow monitoring, so the vacuum cleaner only starts when the filter is correctly installed, which ensures optimal safety for the user. If the air flow falls below a certain value, a warning signal sounds that indicates a blockage or full container. Thanks to its grounding conductor and conductive accessories users are effectively protected against an electrostatic charge, which can occur when vacuuming dry dusts. Sturdy housing with a bumper at the front and large metal castors provide ultimate stability, transportability and a long service life – making it easier to move the equipment from site to site. The flat, non-slip top provides a secure hold for the user’s toolbox, and slots on the machine allow accessories to be stored securely.
Additionally, new bayonet locks and large clips on the floor nozzle allow the quick change of accessories between wet and dry applications, without the need for any tools. The suction hose now connects directly
into the container head allowing maximum use of the container space, and a significant reduction in noise when vacuuming small quantities of dust make these machines a powerful ally.

The Resurgence of Architectural Anodising Back in the 1970’s architectural aluminium, shopfronts, windows and curtain wall, was available in anodised finishes. These finishes were limited to silver, bronze and black. In the day, replacement window companies often offered a silver framed aluminium casement window set in a hardwood frame. The finish was exceptionally robust and if you look round today, some of these home improvement windows are still performing well. So why did we all but stop using anodised finishes?
52
Staying with residential home improvement, in the 1980’s the new material on the market was PVC. Expensive at the time, the product offered good insulation and promised a long life with virtually no maintenance. Over the following decade the PVC
revolution decimated the aluminium systems, despite white finishes becoming available for aluminium in both electrophoretic and polyester powder coating finishes. In the commercial aluminium facade market, polyester powder coating gave architects the ability to use a wide range of bright colours in their designs. The ability of powder coating to ‘cover all’, including blemishes in the extrusion seems the perfect finish and, whilst few people would admit in the industry, aluminium dies were produced cheaper as the surface finish of the profile was often to be covered over with a sixty micron coating of ‘paint’. These same profiles, when used for anodising, often showed ‘die lines’ which whilst not unattractive,
specifiers were not comfortable with. Powder coating quickly became more economic to apply than anodising and became the finish of choice. In an interesting turn more recently, the powder coat industry has introduced ‘anodic’ finishes to mimic anodised finishes. Powder coating has advanced a great deal over the years and offers exceptional quality for architectural aluminium profiles but, architects and specifiers are looking back to the base material itself and want to use it in its natural state. So what is anodising? In simple terms, it is a controlled ‘corrosion’ of the surface of the aluminium, turning aluminium
September 2018 Windows & Glazing Systems into ‘aluminium oxide’ similar to iron oxide (rust) on steel. The difference with aluminium oxide is that once it has been created on the surface of the aluminium it completely seals the base aluminium from further corrosion, unlike steel. So anodising is not an applied finish but a conversion of the surface of the aluminium, so it will not peel or flake. Done to the right quality, the material life expectancy can last many decades and will not fade. So what about the ‘die lines’? Simply put, extrusion dies that have visible faces require more attention prior to use. These dies need to be polished and cleaned more regularly as the extrusion process can be quite abrasive on the surface of the die. Aluprof, one of the largest producers of aluminium fenestration systems in Europe, produce dies that are dedicated to each finish. The more expensive, often hand finished dies, are kept for anodising specifications. Another key to creating a good anodised finish is the ability to extrude and anodise within a short space of time, thereby reducing the opportunity for natural oxidisation beginning to occur. Aluprof extrude profile through these higher quality dies which offer higher quality surfaces free from ‘die lines’ and once etched and anodised offer a high quality surface which is both very hard wearing and long lasting. Anodising is also now becoming a choice for pretreatment of aluminium prior to powder coating. A very thin anodising of just five microns seals the aluminium prior to powder coating. This sealing or ‘conversion coating’ has traditionally been completed in chrome or chrome free coatings. The claim for the use of ‘pre-anodising’ or ‘flash anodising’ prior to powder coating is that it avoids the appearance of a type of corrosion known as filiform corrosion. Anodising plants are also very costly to design and install,
utilising high voltage and specialist transformers to rapidly and evenly create an anodised finish. Because of its combined use of a finish in its own right and as a ‘conversion coating’ prior to powder coating, in the UK alone there has been two new anodising plants come on-line in the last couple of years with further plants planned. As specifiers tend to specify shades of grey for the majority of fenestration projects, anodising can be specified in both bronze finish and shades of grey. This is created by the introduction of trace metals such as cobalt or tin during the anodising process. Interestingly, as the anodising is ‘clear’, the introduction of these metals forms an optical colour, which cannot fade over time.
Crucial for specifiers is the knowledge that higher quality dies should be used for producing profiles for anodising and this is something that should find its way into specification for the finish. Aluprof UK’s head office and extensive distribution centre is located in Altrincham, Cheshire. Aluprof systems are increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK including Passivhaus projects. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained local companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets Aluprof’s exacting standards. Further information is available on the company’s website at www.aluprof.eu and specialist advice is available directly from Aluprof’s UK offices on

T
he Anthracite Grey Smooth foil option from VEKA’s well known Variations collection, has a ‘flat’ finish - unlike the realistic woodgrain options - that makes it perfectly suited to projects that demand the look of aluminium, with all the benefits of PVC-U.
54
With the continuing growth of the Vertical Slider market, VEKA Group has also now made Cream and Anthracite Grey available for VEKA and Halo VS systems ex-stock. And, when it comes to VEKA’s ability to anticipate – and react flexibly to – trends in the current market, adding more colours to the ex-stock offering is another example of the system supplier’s perfect palette of customer perks.
September 2018 Windows & Glazing Systems
VEKA Group’s Marketing Director Dawn Stockell explains “We’re continuing to make significant investment in our lamination department because we know that colours are a valuable way in which our customers differentiate themselves and secure more sales. We have the capacity to support new and existing customers with a huge number of colour and woodgrain options, backed up by a reliable level of service, and swift delivery. “It’s our aim to ensure that all our customers have every ‘tool’ they need at hand, to attract and retain customers. That’s why we are continuing to invest in the biggest growth area in our industry with an additional foiling line, a new flexible line for small runs and automated colour changing stations, to ensure we offer our customers the level of service they deserve, in such a competitive market.” In fact, a large proportion of the £5M VEKA plans to invest across the year has focussed on lamination. Having acquired a building adjacent to the existing VEKA HQ, the lamination department will increase from the current 380,000 sq ft site by a further 40,000 sq ft and enable the Burnley-based systems supplier to potentially increase lamination capacity by a staggering 50%. Dawn continues: “When it comes to production, we currently outperform the industry average with 39% of our profile sales now foiled, as our customers strive to meet the growing demand for colour in the domestic and commercial sectors. In the face of a relatively flat market, the whole team here at VEKA are proud to be part of a Group that will continue to invest in order to see our partners succeed.
“As always, our development is guided by customer feedback and we are committed to ensuring our Variations offer remains as clear and simple as possible for our customers, who don’t want hidden set up charges, or a host of exceptions disguised by a headline. The combination of ex-stock availability of the most popular colours, and four weeks on some of the emerging options provides a flexible service. Minimum order quantities remain unchanged at one pack, allowing fabricators to meet one-off orders without being penalised financially or left with excess unused stock.” As a large, and long-established company, VEKA is proud to be light footed and adaptable to changing market trends. As demand grows in specific areas (such as smooth greys) VEKA is constantly developing ways to help customers capitalise each opportunity. To this end, the Imagine Bi-Fold Door portfolio was also expanded earlier in the year to include a

Light transmission levels for the fabric in single figures can remove glare, improving workspaces and comfort zones alike. Solar reflectance (Rs) of over 70% can reduce heat gain through the glass by 25%, 40% to over 50% dependant on glass properties. The blinds also improve the insulation of the window by 15%, 20%, 30% or more, reducing temperature loss.

To the rescue! Bromsgrove man gets a Stiltz Home Lift after stairlift fire brigade drama A 69-year-old chose a Stiltz Home Lift after he had to be rescued by the fire brigade when he became stuck on his stairlift - the third time the mechanical device had broken down in a week. Stephen Kimberley, from Bromsgrove, was traveling downwards when his stairlift ground to a halt having moved just four steps from the top of the stairs. Mr Kimberley shouted for help in the hope one of his neighbours would hear him before using his mobile phone which he had in his pocket to call his sister, Pamela, who lives nearby. She rang the emergency services who were able to rescue him within minutes. The former assembly worker is asthmatic, suffers from angina and has had two knee replacement operations. Mr Kimberley lives alone and has resided in the property his whole life after buying it from his parents. He had the stairlift installed three years ago as climbing the stairs was leaving him breathless. “It was the third time in a week the stairlift had broken – it was ridiculous,” said Mr Kimberley. “I was only on it for a second before it apparently went into overdrive and got stuck. I couldn’t get off of it! “I yelled for help, but by the time the neighbours got around I had already called my sister who called the fire brigade. They were really quick and got me off it within a few minutes. One of the firefighters said “you’re not the first person this has happened to” so it obviously happens all the time.”
60
Mr Kimberley says he refused to use the stairlift again and has now had a capsule-shaped Stiltz Duo Home Lift installed – which was completed by Dolphin Lifts Midlands - in the living room where he was born which travels ‘through the floor’ up to his main bedroom.
He said: “I decided I wasn’t going to use the stairlift again. I was frightened of using it in case I became trapped again – it was too nerve-wracking. I had the stairlift serviced every year and it still broke down. I didn’t know about home lifts when I bought the stairlift three years ago otherwise I would have got a Stiltz Home Lift back then. “It’s easy to use, runs smoothly and I feel safe. It is electricpowered and plugs straight into the wall. I had a power cut the other day while I was in the lift but, because it has a battery back-up, it brought me back down safely until the power came back on again. The lift has improved my life and made me more mobile. I’ve no anxiety about using it. It’s one small step in, push a button and I’m off.” After living at the same house for his entire life, Mr Kimberley insisted he would never consider moving to a bungalow. “I love this house,” he added. “It would be too difficult to leave and I don’t think I would settle anywhere else. We’re a close-knit community and if the neighbours haven’t seen me for a couple of days they always knock on the door to make sure I’m ok, so I’m happy here.”

4 IN 1 PROTECTION The PowerCap® Infinity® is the very latest in Powered Air Purifying Respiratory technology offering 4 in 1 fully integrated protection to the head, eye/face, hearing and respiratory protection in one intuitive lightweight head mounted unit. The PowerCap ® Infinity ® has been designed by JSP’s research and development team who were inspired by feedback received from people about the compatibility issue of having to wear respiratory, head, eye and hearing protection but also the weight, heat and restriction of movement when wearing a waist mounted PAPR filter unit. Through extensive user trials JSP engineered out restrictive waist mounted units and hoses which resulted in an easy to operate lightweight head mounted unit. The PowerCap® Infinity® PAPR unit has a highly efficient twin impeller system that controls the airflow through the head-top which has a cooling effect to maximise user comfort and optimise energy efficiency. Real time diagnostics monitor the performance of the airflow twice per second and
ensure that the unit delivers the optimum level of airflow depending on the wearer’s demands regulating the intake and internal pressure delivering a minimum of 160 litres a minute of filtered clean air.
All key elements of the PowerCap® Infinity ® are user-replaceable, allowing easy maintenance and cleaning which is imperative so the PAPR unit can be used in very dusty environments.
Feedback is given on battery and filter condition via the heads up display and audible notifications and Indicator lights on the front of the unit allow co-workers to also see if there are any issues. The Powercap® Infinity® provides users with respiratory protection to a level of TH3, EN 12491:1998 + A2: 2008 – with the highest possible rating of APF 40. It also offers head protection to EN397, eye protection to EN166.B and hearing protection to EN352-3 with the optional Sonis® helmet mounted ear defenders with an unbeaten SNR of 36.
The Powercap ® Infinity ® brings a simple solution to the complex problem of providing combination above the neck PPE. Its intuitive features simplify user acceptability improving compliance whilst keeping people safe at work.

ROOF RESCUER JOHN RECOGNISED AS LOCAL HERO A community-minded roofer was nominated as a ‘Local Hero’ for his inspiring acts of generosity for the National Federation of Roofing Contractors’ 2018 UK Roofing Awards, sponsored by SIG Roofing. people. If you can be a decent person and do someone a favour, I believe that it’ll come back and reward you later in different ways.” The staff at SIG Roofing’s Wigan branch also explained how the roof of a heavily pregnant woman was left in a bad state, whereby John took it upon himself to fix the roof free of charge, costing him hundreds of pounds. Throughout his roofing career, John has been no stranger to being generous. “A few years ago, I’d been recommended to appear on a show which had the aim of coming in and rectifying and restoring poorly fitted roofs of the general public, free of charge.” “I don’t feel that I’m going out of my way, but I do feel that there’s just not enough generosity anymore, so I like to try and do my bit when I can. There’s no science behind it!”
John Davis of JD Roofing was recognised by staff at the SIG Roofing Wigan branch, who regularly hear about his local community support and how incredibly highly people speak of him.

John frequently goes above and beyond for those in his
community, particularly the elderly or less well-off, by fitting or replacing their roofs for a discounted rate, or for free. John said: “I am very flattered to have been a nominee for the Local Hero award. I have always believed that we as humans should do as much as we can for

Take your safety to new heights Arco announces launch of new drone products to enhance technology offering. Arco, the UK’s leading safety company, is encouraging its customers to embrace technological advancements into their businesses by launching a range of drones that could be used to carry out otherwise hazardous tasks, safely and costeffectively. The use of drones within a commercial environment is increasing and is likely to significantly change the working practices of many businesses. According to a recent report, the use of drone technology could drive cost savings of £16bn each year with an estimated 628,000 people working in the future drone economy, including building and programming these new devices.1 There are a number of dangerous tasks where the benefits of using drones are already becoming apparent. For example: •
68
Building Inspections and Site Surveys – Often building inspections require manual assessments and the construction of scaffolding. Using a drone can help identify problem areas in advance, allowing them to be evaluated and repaired more efficiently. What’s more, drones are becoming more commonly used to inspect land and transport infrastructure, meaning they could eventually
replace expensive helicopter use in surveying. •
Offshore Oil Rig Inspections - Using drones for offshore oil rig inspections is replacing traditional methods as safety is paramount. Drones allow the largest facilities to be inspected quickly, helping teams to identify any structural weaknesses, scan for hot spots, find gas leaks and more.
•
Wind Turbine Inspections – Current inspection methods can involve manual checks that require extensive health and safety briefs. Drone usage increases efficiency and reduces excessive downtime for wind turbines.
•
Agriculture – The agriculture industry has significantly benefitted from the use of drones, especially for thermal monitoring. For example, when inspecting rooftop solar panels of large solar farms, being able to clearly view temperature anomalies allows problem panels to be quickly isolated and fixed keeping energy production at optimum levels. Additionally, these new types of technology are also being utilised for remote crop spraying, with thermal image monitoring technology providing data on plant health and irrigation.
Drones are reducing the risk to employees and saving companies time and money. In order to fly a drone commercially a pilot is required to complete drone training and then apply for a Permission for Commercial Operations (PfCO), from the Commercial Aviation Authority (CAA). It is essential those flying the hightech equipment understand the rules and regulations they must adhere to. To ensure drones have a positive impact in the workplace and are used safely and in accordance with the regulations, customers can purchase Arco’s drone products with training to enable pilots to comply with safety standards. The training courses are provided by an accredited training facility and are available to purchase with or without the drone. For more information about Arco’s new drone products and product training, please visit www.arco.co.uk/drones
TRACTION ENHANCING NANOTECHNOLOGY A POSITIVE STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION In the face of some 50,000 injuries treated in NHS Accident and Emergency departments each year - all caused by slips, trips and falls, a company specialising in accident prevention methods has introduced an innovative new product which dramatically increases the traction on most flooring surfaces and is equally effective when applied to the soles of footwear.
Using an entirely new and patented nanotechnology formula within an environmentally-friendly solution consisting of 96.8% water, millions of invisible ‘nano-spikes’ per square inch are formed which give up to 200% increased traction on dry surfaces and 500% on wet, including areas where no shoes are worn such as pool sides, showers and other slippery surfaces. Called ‘TREADSURE™’ the product can be applied quickly and easily to all solid surface areas with a minimum of interference to usual foot traffic or work environment.
All types of footwear can be treated from high-heels, office and sports shoes to work-boots to increase traction and reduce the risk of slip and fall accidents.
