Where do you get the I/O for the IIoT? Data is the heart of all Internet of Things systems, including systems deployed into industrial environments. When we talk about making the aging electrical grid smarter or the factory of the future more efficient, what we’re really after are insights that can make our equipment and infrastructure smarter and more efficient. And to deliver these incredibly valuable insights, which will result in millions of dollars in savings, uptime or operational efficiency, we need data. Lots of it. We also need complex, computationally intensive algorithms that scour the data to find trends, patterns and anomalies (Figure 1).

Hyperconnected world Figure 1: In a world of smarter, hyperconnected devices and infrastructure, data is king.

While these algorithms and analysis routines are a very important piece of the IIoT puzzle, the best data scientists in the world cannot predict equipment failures without enormous amounts of data. And we’re not talking about just any kind of data either. Big Analog Data, a term trademarked by National Instruments, comes from dozens to thousands of sensors and devices spread across your assets, facility or entire fleet. It includes sensors measuring vibrations, pressure and flow; cameras performing thermal scanning and pattern matching; and motors being sent precise PWM waveforms to execute control algorithms. And this Big Analog Data is big. While all IIoT data ends up digitized to beam across the binary superhighway, each measurement starts out in the physical, analog

world, and a lot of digital bytes are required to represent even short and relatively inaccurate analog waveforms. So when channel count, signal duration or accuracy requirements go up, the result is terabytes of (digitized) analog data, sometimes even per hour. Then you add the rest of the data. Yes, there’s more, including all the digital data from on/off signals and open/close sensors, as well as all the single-point temperature and proximity data. The insights you need to make your operations smarter or more efficient live within this collective set of data. And to extract those insights, you need to collect, manage and analyze the data. Additionally, many companies deploying IIoT systems today are doing so in brownfield environments, where intelligent edge devices are installed on existing equipment.

At MBS, a Look at a Challenged Industry An annual automotive conference began Monday not with talk of record sales, but with a look at challenges facing the industry.

and Chrysler (now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) were reorganized as part of US government-backed bankruptcies.

The Management Briefing Seminars, produced by the Center for Automotive Research (Ann Arbor, MI), has always had a more technical emphasis than auto shows and other automotive media events.

Since then, US sales have surged, with a record 17.47 million deliveries in 2015, according to Autodata Corp. However, sales have hit a plateau.

This year, that’s even more true amid changes in manufacturing and concern the good economic times of the past several years may be winding down. The US auto industry hit bottom in 2009, when General Motors Co. AMP Magazine | 04 August 2016

Total light-vehicle deliveries only rose 1.5% in 2016’s first half to 8.64 million. Demand remains strong for trucks, with a 9.2% gain, but sales of cars plunged 7.5%. Thus, a rising tide no longer lifts all boats. FCA US, for example, is responding by ending car production in the United States and doubling

down on trucks.

“Short term, how long can the party last?” asked Charles Chesbrough, senior economist for the Original Equipment Suppliers Association, asked during a presentation at the conference. The current economic recovery is well along and may be close to running its course, the economist said. “We may be due for the next recession,” Chesbrough said. “There is a concern in that (automotive) supply base about that recession clock.” Industry News

The Best Time Opto 22 I/O for a SWOT breakout boards Analysis? IMTS 2016 Snap-UDC-HDB-G4 and Snap-UDC-HDB breakout boards boost the capabilities of 32-point Snap digital I/O modules, simplify field wiring and save panel space.

The International Manufacturing Technology Show, held every two years at McCormick Place in Chicago, is always a marvel of new technologies. But this year’s show—with more than 2000 exhibitors, more than 114,000 registrants and more than 1 million ft2 of space—is taking place in the midst of a great digital shift in the global manufacturing technology sector. If you have any doubt about this, it will surely be erased if you come to Chicago. To be honest, FABTECH 2015 was awash in this change last fall, but it promises to be on full display at IMTS Sept. 12–17, as plug-and-play digital technologies continue to invade machine tools, automation and more, quickly reshaping the manufacturing landscape. Or, said another way: A lot has happened in the past two years.

The Snap-UDC-HDB-G4 breakout board allows connection of 32-point Snap digital I/O modules to higher loads to gain the reliability of fused outputs and isolated inputs, while the space-saving Snap-UDC-HDB breakout board provides spring-clamp connectors for as many as to 32 field devices, all in a small footprint. Both new breakout boards are part of the Snap PAC system, which includes PACs, Ethernetbased I/O systems and PAC Project automation software.

Expect most major exhibitors to be talking about their new apps, software, remote monitoring and control, metrology feedback loops, simulation, integration and self-correcting, self-optimizing capabilities. For all of you manufacturing professionals out there, this change means new Opportunities and Threats are coming on fast, so it’s a good time to dig deep and honestly evaluate your Strengths and Weaknesses. Put together a detailed SWOT analysis of your machine shop, mid-sized factory or sprawling global manufacturing enterprise. Figure out where you need to tweak your business to remain competitive.

Because the world, as always, is changing. This year’s show also takes place against an interesting, if not uncertain, landscape. Headed into the show, the US manufacturing economy showed signs of picking up. The Institute for Supply Management reported a fourth consecutive month of expansion in June. The PMI, which measures economic activity in manufacturing, was 53.2% in June, the best index reading in the past 12 months, where it has averaged, overall, a lackluster 50.3%. Meanwhile, many of you have been trying to determine what BREXIT, and a new US president, might mean in this global board game we all play. While you may not come out of IMTS with answers to those questions, you can certainly return home armed with better manufacturing technologies and more competitive than before. Industry News

Fish Fresh Off the Boat and Into ERP

Dynamic Systems and Northlake Partners integrate product tracking technology with enterprise resource planning to trace fresh food from processing and packaging to inventory and accounting. Dynamic Systems, a maker of barcode technology, has teamed up with enterprise resource planning (ERP) supplier Northlake Partners to provide an automated traceability system that enables real-time visibility—from fish to financials—for the seafood and produce industries. The integration of the two applications will also help manufacturers comply with rules emerging from the Food and Drug Administration’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Dynamic Systems’ Simba traceability and labeling software uses barcode technology to automate data collection as the food is processed and packed, recording details such as product attributes, pack dates, inventory locations and shipping information. Northlake’s ERP system called NorthScope, on the other hand, offers sales, inventory, logistics, accounting and management reporting.

accuracy while increasing productivity and lowering costs. It also plays well into FDA requirements around documentation for product tracing and food safety. To that end, the labels generated by Simba have all of the relevant information on it, enabling traceability right down to the boat the fish came off of, Freeman said. “We are excited about our relationship with Northlake Partners,” said Alison Falco, President of Dynamic Systems. “Our customers have been asking for an ERP solution designed for the fresh food industry that has the flexibility of Simba.”

Typically, these two systems are kept separate so when a product comes into the warehouse, the data must be re-keyed into the ERP system. Oftentimes, however, operators will simply write information down on a piece of paper. This is time-consuming and potentially introduces errors into the process. When the track and trace and ERP systems are integrated, there is a time-savings benefit of having up-to-the-minute information transferred from the plant floor to the enterprise. But, more importantly, data quality is maintained. “Fresh fish has to come off the boat and then go through the plant where it is labeled and put into cold storage or shipped,” said Rob Freeman, business development manager at Dynamic Systems, explaining how automating data capture from the processing plant to the ERP system creates high levels of data AMP Magazine | 06 August 2016

Schneider Electric Unveils Turnkey Operations Software Suite The Line Performance Suite for Food & Beverage and CPG companies integrates what traditionally has been isolated horizontal applications into an integrated subscription-based vertical offering. In an effort to address some of the biggest manufacturing concerns in the food and beverage industry—ranging from asset availability, maintenance costs, labor efficiency and process improvements—Schneider Electric, this week, announced the availability of a turnkey line productivity tool. The Line Performance Suite for Food & Beverage and Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG), bundles the company’s manufacturing execution system (MES) with data capture, root cause analysis, and integrated reporting. Workflow applications tie it all together through model-driven operations management that enforce business processes, enable collaboration and standardize best practices across multiple sites. And, while having all of this capability rolled into one offering is appealing, perhaps it’s more appealing to cost-conscious manufacturers that it is all delivered in a subscription-based model. That means paying for the MES implementation comes out of the operating vs. capital budget. According to the company, having MES, reporting and workflow functions working in unity helps ease line set up and configuration for faster time to value. It also removes line performance bottlenecks to reduce downtime and gain process metrics for both automated and manual lines, and improves product quality by lowering scrap rates and improving first pass yields. In addition, key performance indicators (KPIs) provide real-time access to critical operating parameters.

Honeywell to Buy Logistics Automation Leader Intelligrated Through its acquisition of Intelligrated, Honeywell is making a bid for a better position in a global warehouse automation market worth about $20 billion. If there’s any doubt about the value that warehousing and logistics automation has taken on over the past few years, just look at the return Permira has gained on Intelligrated during that time. The global investment firm purchased Intelligrated—a key player in supply chain and warehouse automation—for about $500 million in 2012. Now Permira is selling it to Honeywell for $1.5 billion in cash. Reuters reported last week that Toyota Industries had also been competing to buy Intelligrated. Honeywell announced it has signed an agreement to acquire privately held Intelligrated for what amounts to about 12 times Intelligrated’s estimated 2016 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA). SMART TECHNOLOGY – IS IT GETTING TOO SMART FOR ITS OWN GOOD? The technology behind Smart systems is clearly getting more complex and all encompassing. Systems such as BEMS – building energy management systems – allow for the integration of heating, lighting, electronic fire and security systems and have become commonplace in new commercial and public sector projects, but where does the future lie in the residential and office marketplace? There was an expectation that the rise of smart technology in the home would take off in a big way in 2016, but the evidence is that the rumours of the huge ‘take up’ of clever technology simply hasn’t quite happened. The technology has become more complex and the fact is that homes and offices actually want simplicity of controls and ease of use when it comes controlling the energy costs. Renowned for innovative electric heating solutions, Ecolec has launched its novel design solution – Ecolec Multiple Zone – a new wireless, remotely controlled Smart Controller – using a PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone – that allows you to control temperature in up to 10 separate zones within your home or office with precision.

between the Gateway, thermostats and heaters are all wireless. Wireless signals between the gateway and each zone’s thermostats and radiators communicate at 433 MHz “In many applications – particularly in new and refurbished apartment blocks, electric heating is far preferable to wet heating systems and far less expensive to install,” says Chandru Ray. “With these wireless controls you can control the heat in various areas of the home or office remotely – it’s deceptively simple.” “To give another example”, continues Mr Ray of Ecolec , “operators of a small 10 bedroom hotel will be able to control the temperature of each bedroom remotely from outside the bedroom so that they can optimise on heating levels according to whether the room is occupied or not. “

You simply need to log in to a home or office Ecolec heating system via the internet to check the air temperature in any zone or room to make the program changes necessary. This system offers unique levels of flexibility for controlling a heating system remotely. The Ecolec Multiple Zone Gateway is connected via a network cable to a home or office internet router. Programming and control is then available using a PC, tablet, or mobile device with a PC app, browser or mobile app via the internet. The signals

EcoCooling direct evaporative cooling can be used as an alternative to air conditioning in most industrial buildings providing 90% energy savings at a fraction of the capital cost of a traditional air conditioning or ventilation system.

EcoCooling Ltd sales@ecocooling.org 01284 810586 @EcoCooling1

A simple system of just one unit can provide up to 30kW of cooling from just 1kW of electricity and can cover an area of 250sqm or a 15m diameter circle in a typical manufacturing or logistics operation. The only service requirements are 240v electricity and a mains water supply. EcoCooling evaporative coolers offer many advantages over traditional systems They are safe, cost effective and require only simple maintenance. Their low power usage has little impact on the site maximum demand and can release power availability if it is used to replace refrigeration. Advanced control systems connect to any existing BMS system. There are no refrigerants and the installation cost can be up to a quarter of the cost of traditional systems. Installation in most cases is quick and entails minimum, if any, disruption to production. EcoCoolers can also provide air flow through the side or top, allowing installation to be flexible and cheaper when roof penetration is not an option. Mobile coolers are also available. Data centres and server room cooling Do you have a datacentre of server room that needs cooling? The EcoCooling CREC solution has been adopted by over 200 data centres in the UK and they are achieving PUEs of below 1.1. CRECs use Electrically Commutated (EC) fans which are the most efficient available. Further efficiency is gained by speed control. Operating the EcoCooling system at half speed reduces the fan energy use by over 85%. This permits extremely high cooling efficiencies at part population of data centres or server rooms. Legionnaires disease and evaporative coolers The EcoCooling range of evaporative coolers maintain hygienic operation and fully comply with all legionella control regulations by applying the following principles: • Avoidance of droplets • Low water operating temperature • Avoidance of stagnant water • Avoidance of corrosion and scaling • Regular maintenance Ecocooling now have over 1500 installations both in the industrial and IT sectors in the UK including Cummins Diesel, Net-a-Porter, RPC, Cott Beverages, Premier Foods, Cambridge University, Unum and Humberside Police. Food and Beverage Processes The production and processing of food and beverages is governed by a rigorous network of laws, regulations, codes of practice and guidance. The aim of these rules and guidelines are to minimise possible risks to the consumer from potentially harmful products that result from the presence of foreign bodies or bacteria. The use of pressure instrumentation is an essential part of safe food production. Pressure and level measurement in the food, dairy, beverage and processing industries is required in piping, filters and tanks. Pressure instruments must be accurate, immune to vibrations, able to withstand the temperatures and stresses generated by cleaning processes, and have specialised wetted parts. Applications include balance tanks, silos, storage tanks, mixing processes, flavour systems, pasteurisation, emulsifying, filling machines and homogenisation. The majority of electrical pressure transmitters use a flexible diaphragm as the pressure transmitting element. By using the appropriate process connection, it is possible to produce flush mounted pressure transmitters that have no cavities and are easy to clean. CIP (Clean In Place) cleaning is utilized to clean the interior surfaces of pipelines AMP Magazine | 20 August 2016

and tanks of liquid and semi-liquid food and beverage processing equipment. This type of cleaning is generally done with large tanks, kettles or piping systems where there are smooth surfaces. The “wetted part of a pressure transmitter is the diaphragm which is in contact with the medium being measured and must be able to withstand the forces and temperatures generated during CIP cleaning and sterilisation procedures. Regular cleaning and gap free design reduce risk of contamination, but the finish of the wetted parts must also have smooth contours and clean welding with no nooks and crannies that may cause the media to gather and rot. Usually components are made from stainless steel to prevent media from sticking. The PR3800 range from ESI Technology includes a range of flush diaphragm transmitters that have been designed to meet the requirements of the majority of industrial food and beverage applications. Robustly constructed from stainless steel, this range of pressure transmitters offer excellent stability and accuracy over a long service life. The flush membrane are suitable for CIP and seals are available in a variety of forms that can be installed directly to the process or remotely via stainless steel capillary. For very Sensors & Controls

high temperature processes the PR3860 version of this product is suitable for use with media temperature up to 250ºC.

incorporates an additional platform that raises the transmitter above any layers of sludge that may be present in the media.

A different method for continuous measurement of liquid level in the food and beverage industry is the hydrostatic method. Hydrostatic pressure is commonly described “The pressure equivalent to that exerted on a surface by a column of water of a given height due to the force of gravity”. A liquid column above the pressure sensor creates hydrostatic pressure, which is a direct indicator for the liquid level. The measurement depends on the density of the liquid, but this can be entered as a calibration parameter. The PR3400 range of hydrostatic pressure transmitters from ESI Technology Ltd have been designed for the measurement of depth and level of liquids for many applications. The measuring cell of the pressure sensor detects small changes in hydrostatic pressure, which increases or decreases according to the filling level.

In the case of open vessels, where atmospheric pressure is acting on the head of the liquid, a gauge pressure sensor can be used. For closed vessels two sensors are required. Measurements can be made with either two separate gauge pressure transmitters or a differential pressure transmitter. The food industry uses differential pressure transmitters for flow measurement in service systems. This is due to its robustness and simplicity. ESI Technology has a range of differential pressure transmitters in DP, bidirectional or gauge reference. Available for ultralow pressure ranges up to 200bar, they offer high stability and performance with true wet/wet operation, and suitable for all liquids compatible with stainless steel and titanium.

Not your average connector manufacturer The Company - for more than 75 years, ODU has been a problem-solving designer of premium connectors. From magnetic resonance tomography to kitchen utensils to submarines, the connector systems developed and manufactured by ODU are found in all industry sectors and all around the world. Head¬quartered in Mühldorf Germany, the ODU Group has an international production and distribution network throughout Europe, North America, and Asia. History - in 1937, Otto Dunkel built the first ionospheric transmitters, broadcasting messages into the atmosphere, to be reflected and then received in another location. These transmission presented many challenges, particularly with the plug contacts of the broadcasting system. Looking out his window one day, Dunkel saw a man with a twig-broom sweeping up leaves and this gave him the idea for an entirely new type of contact – the springwire contact. A year later Dunkel patented his invention: The deflecting pin contact - now known around the world as ODU SPRINGTAC. Multiple, individually-operating, springwires are incorporated into each contact [even the smallest 0.76mm dia contact has 15 springwires] - each springwire is in contact with the pin, ensuring an extremely high number of mating cycles and stable low contact resistance. Markets - connectors from ODU ensure reliable transmission of power, signals, data, and media in numerous demanding applications in the growth markets of medical, military & security and energy, as well as in established sectors such as industrial electronics, test & measurement, and automotive. Modular Product – for the industrial equipment OEM, the the rectangular connector system, ODU-MAC, offers nearly limitless configurations due to a flexible modular build. Reliable and compact, most ODU-MAC modules are based on ODU SPRINGTAC contacts with springwire technology, ensuring the highest level of contact stability even under increased vibration. The ODU-MAC is available in two formats – in a DIN housing for manual operation and in an aluminium frame for automatic docking. Contacts can be added and varied by the customer using an on-line configurator, backed-up by technical support. Whether in connector technology for the Finnish state railway, as an interface with the analysis unit of heart catheter systems, or in pick-and-place machines, the ODU-MAC ensures reliable safety, quick trans¬mission, and a high number of mating cycles. Customers report no failures in the aluminium docking frame version of the ODU-MAC even after more than one million mating cycles. So, what’s new? ODU has developed a new interface housing for the ODU-MAC, an add-on solution created specifically to provide optimal strain relief and also allow for the inclusion of additional circuit-boards and components. The new housing is available for all six docking frames, which are especially designed to tackle the challenges of automatic docking situations. ODU can deliver complete system solutions to its clients from a single source, including the connector, matching interface housing and, if needed, the complete cable assembly. A direct approach to electroless nickel quality control

E

lectroless nickel plating processes, commonly used in the automotive, aerospace and printed circuit board industries, are controlled for both thickness and composition. The preferred method for analysing electroless nickel properties is X-ray fluorescence (XRF). This is because it is quick – on the order of seconds, nondestructive, requires no chemicals or gases, involves little or no sample preparation and is straightforward enough to be performed by minimally trained production staff. XRF instruments have been employed widely for many years to determine elemental composition and coating thickness, and are becoming increasingly advanced to address more demanding analytical requirements. XRF instruments are available in many different forms but two are considered most appropriate for measuring electroless nickel plating: microspot and handheld. Microspot analysers, such as the Oxford Instruments MAXXI 6, are high-power benchtop instruments which mechanically reduce the output from an X-ray source down to the micrometer range in order to measure small features or small components. Handheld analysers, such as the Oxford Instruments X-MET8000, are miniaturised versions of benchtop equipment, consisting of the same critical components. Whilst the measurement area of handheld instruments is typically larger than their microspot counterparts, they have an advantage in portability, allowing the user to measure parts anywhere the instrument can be carried. Both types of analysers have been commercially available for many years; however they traditionally had a limitation in that they could not directly measure the composition of the electroless nickel. The reason for this is that electroless nickel AMP Magazine | 38 August 2016

is comprised of nickel, a relatively easy element for XRF to detect, and phosphorus, which has relatively low X-ray energy. Without specialised hardware, XRF instruments cannot “see” phosphorus, and therefore relied on mathematical modeling to determine coating thickness only, without a way to quantify composition. Advances in XRF technology such as high-definition Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) now make it possible to measure both nickel and phosphorous content directly, allowing for both the coating thickness and composition to be determined simultaneously. Current generations of microspot and handheld XRF analysers use a suitable combination of X-ray tube (optimised to excite phosphorus) and detector (sensitive enough to detect lowenergy elements), as well as geometry that minimises the distance between the tube, sample and detector to ensure maximum transmission of the phosphorus X-rays. As the hardware has improved, so has the analytical software. Operators with little training can confidently obtain the same results as expert technical staff.

Taking advantage of this optimised hardware enables XRF to provide critical analysis for quality control throughout the electroless nickel plating process, providing accurate and precise measurement of the deposited thickness and composition of the coating in varying ratios. Over a range of substrates including aluminium, steel, and copper alloys, choose microspot or handheld XRF analysers to ensure electroless nickel coatings are applied at the right thickness and composition to achieve desired metallurgical properties while minimising costs from over-plating. Cable Entry Systems from Murrplastik The new KDL/H 24 cable entry system by Murrplastik meets the very high protection rating of IP69K. The KDL/H 24 is produced as a zinc die casting and is very suitable for feed-through of preconfigured lines in rugged outdoor environments, while being exposed to high mechanical stress at the same time. In addition, the KDL/H 24 is equipped with a grommet block made of TPE, which fixes the sleeves behind the metal frame and locks each feed-in cable extra tightly with its built-in strain relief. It is virtually impossible for the grommets to be torn out, even under extremely high mechanical stresses. Extreme weather conditions and environmental circumstances of moisture, acids, alkalis, alcohols, mineral oils, cleaning agents, grease, and dust cannot harm the KDL/H 24 in any way.
