Rockwell Automation
Receives Delphi Supplier Award for Industrial Asset Management Services
Automotive components company achieves cost savings by reducing inventory. Rockwell Automation received the Delphi Pinnacle Award in recognition of its cost-saving services for the company in 2016. Delphi, the largest automotive components company in the world, annually recognises top-tier suppliers who help the company achieve quality, value and cost-performance improvements. To help achieve these cost savings, Rockwell Automation worked with the diesel components business of Delphi to implement inventory management services, known as the Rockwell Automation Asset Management Program. The service provides an onsite asset management professional to collaborate with companies to help manage inventory, mitigate obsolescence risk and reduce maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) parts costs by as much as 25 percent. The program was implemented at Delphi in 2012 to help optimise assets on the plant floor by reducing inventory, repairing components instead of replacing them, and managing the entire lifecycle of inventory. AMP Magazine | 02 Issue 38
The process began with an Installed Base Evaluation assessment from Rockwell Automation to identify potential areas for improvement. Rockwell Automation then worked with Delphi to create a customer-specific combination of services, capabilities and proven methodologies, all overseen by an on-site asset management professional. Since then, Delphi has reduced costs tied to MRO by hundreds of thousands of dollars. “Rockwell Automation is honoured to receive recognition from Delphi,” said Marc Baret, director of Industrial Services and Solutions, Rockwell Automation. “The automotive industry has been under pressure to reduce costs, and a key way to manage that challenge is by reducing inventory and making better use of components on-site. These best practices can be applied to any industry.” The 2016 Delphi Pinnacle Award winners were announced at a ceremony in May 2017 in Krakow, Poland.

Maintaining air quality integrity with Breezair Evaporative Cooling Industrial plants face many challenges when it comes to indoor air quality, specifically when considering fresh air volume, temperature, humidity and particle concentration. In this article, we examine the challenges of the Industry and explore how evaporative cooling can be the right solution. Indoor air quality is an important issue from both a social and economic point of view, people are becoming more aware of what they breath and quality of the air around them. Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the quality of the air that affects the health and wellbeing of the individuals occupying a particular space. We can consider two essential aspects related to IAQ: indoor air pollution and human comfort. It is well reported that outdoor air pollution is harmful to human health, but we generally pay less attention to the potential health impact of indoor air pollution. Indoor pollutants, those generated inside a building, tend to be because of activities such as cooking, moulding, heating, use of cleaning products or air fresheners. Working conditions in production plants can be extremely challenging at all times of the year but in the summertime, these challenges are heightened. High temperatures in factories and warehouses
can affect workers and decrease their productivity. In very hot environments, the most serious health and safety concern is heat stroke. Heat stroke can be fatal if medical attention is not available immediately. Heat exhaustion and fainting (syncope) are also types of heat related illnesses which are not fatal but can interfere with a person’s ability to work. NASA studies show that human productivity falls 3.6% for every degree above 22°C and 4.7% over 30°C. Other studies carried out by the British Industrial Fatigue Board found that there was a lower output in hot/heavy industries in summer than in winter and an increase in accidents when air temperatures rose above 20°C. While there is no legal requirement for environments to be sustained within a temperature threshold, employers recognise that maintaining the temperature at a comfortable level will not only ensure their employees are healthier and happier, but consequently more productive – ultimately making them more profitable! A good solution to improve indoor air quality can be found in evaporative cooling solutions. Drawing fresh air from the outside, evaporative coolers offer great advantages, such as cleaner air over refrigerated air conditioning. Traditional air conditioning units, which remain within a building and rely on doors and windows to be kept closed to ensure they work effectively, recirculate the same stale air over and over. In the case of food production, where pollutants are being created alongside, germs and fumes, traditional air conditioning is exacerbating the indoor air pollution problem further. B re e z a i r ( S e e l e y I n t e r n a t i o n a l ’s evaporative cooler) works the simple principles of evaporation where hot outside air is pumped through watersoaked pads. As the air blows through the pads, the water is evaporated and the heat in the air is absorbed, which lowers the air temperature. A fan then pushes the cool air through a ducting system, which then lets the cool air inside the whole building. Evaporative coolers only use water and
AMP Magazine | 04 Issue 38
electricity to work, thus resulting in a significant saving in running costs. Doors and windows must be left open (or an extraction system installed) to exhaust indoor air, that collects heat, moisture and impurities. Outside air often contain dust and pollen: Breezair filters the incoming air, removing most airborne dust and pollen particles. The wet cooling pads trap most of these particles, which are washed down into the sump by the circulating water. Some specific productions can be affected by humidity, particularly warehouses that store perishable food products. Due to their size, often large with high ceilings, humidity can have a detrimental impact on the health of workers, the quality of the perishable products- again, potentially hitting a company’s bottom line. In all these cases, evaporative cooling can be the best solution. For example, with our Breezair system you can take control of the internal humidity levels, setting a certain maximum relative humidity temperature above which the cooler work in ventilation mode, still providing fresh air from the outside, but without adding any additional moisture. Controlling humidity provides us with a more healthy, comfortable environment and helps control static electricity as well and other humidity-sensitive processes. More information about Breezair evaporative cooling can be found at www.breezair.com/uk
A unit that was originally designed to help ensure the batch consistency of bakery products has found a new home within a wide range of manufacturing industries.
E
very baker knows that to produce batch consistency you need an identical amount of ingredient each and every time. You also need an identical volume of water – and that’s not easy to achieve. Bakers simply cannot afford to indulge in guesswork when working with volumes of water; delivery to the mixing bowl by way of buckets of water or hosepipe is messy and open to operator error. However, many bakeries use a water measuring system called the ABACUS - which achieves accuracy and repeatability. Hoddesdon-based John Morton, of Aquameter Ltd, who designs and manufacturers the units explains that it is a digital micro-controlled device that delivers exact, pre-selected quantities of water from a single pipe straight into the mixing vessel. John says: “The precise metering of the water means that the operator can exactly recreate batch consistency every time. The ABACUS is now finding a home in many other manufacturing processes and is perfectly suited to any process in which water is added to any other ingredients – such as powders, granules or pastes that are used in the manufacturing process. Derek Baxter, International Projects Director with Filtrona International in Jarrow, says of the system: “We use the unit for metering water into a carbon-powder mix. Were it not for these units we would be using buckets of water, a line of hose, or a constantly changing mark on the tank - not that convenient.” He goes on: “With this thing we just dial new numbers in, and away we
go... it’s obviously more accurate; using the meter than relying on staff to put it in by pail.” Micro Metalsmiths, Kirkby Moorside, have taken the unit on board. The company produce non-ferrous metal castings; precision components for the aerospace and microwave industries. At the heart of the operation is a “lost wax” process. This involves producing a wax image of the casting, which is then encased in a mould. This mould is a plaster-silica blend, which uses exact quantities of water with which to blend the components. This mix is then poured around the wax and allowed to harden. That done, the wax is burned out at high temperature, the molten metal poured in, and the mould broken away to reveal the finished casting. Originally, they used a balance beam system for measuring out the water. It had a central pivot which was weighted at one end. The water flowed in and balanced out… archaic and not particularly accurate. Other alternatives would have involved the company investing heavily in load cell weighing or some form of volumetric measuring device. He says: “The ABACUS is relatively inexpensive and reliable. It takes minutes to install and is of negligible cost to run.” Little wonder that the unit is catching on in manufacturing processes outside the industry for which it was originally conceived. NEW servo actuator for precision motion:
Spinea’s new DS 095 DriveSpin expands DriveSpin range Recently announced by Spinea s.r.l. and available in the UK from Heason Technology, the DriveSpin DS 095 series integrates the industry leading TwinSpin ® high-load capacity trochoidal gear unit and a powerful AC servomotor with servo feedback for a cutting-edge rotary actuator solution for precision motion applications. The inline (non-hollowshaft) design of the DS 095 fulfils the gap between the DS 70 and DS 100 models to provide a rated torque of up to 85 Nm and maximum lost motion and hysteresis values of less than one arc-min. With its excellent power density and very compact axial length the modular actuator boasts industry leading tilt and torsional stiffness specifications in addition to minimal vibration and long service life. Spinea’s TwinSpin reduction gear units are characterised by a patented trochoidal high-precision gear reduction arrangement with meshed outer and inner planetary gears retained by high load capacity needle roller bearings. As the input gear ring is rotated by the servomotor, the eccentric action of the planetary gearing causes rotation to the output gear ring in the same direction. With almost 50% simultaneous gear meshing, high efficiency and backlashfree torque transmission is realised with radial and axial stiffness maintained at very high levels by the large bearing surfaces. To suit a wide range of servo drives the DM 095 is available with a choice of three high performance servomotors with DC voltage/nominal current ratings of 24/29, 320/2.1 and 560/1.2. Similar flexibility extends to the choice of feedback options that include Hiperface, Endat, resolvers and incremental encoders. Brake options are available with or without hand release, and electrical connection flexibility covers cable as well as straight or angled power and feedback connectors. With its own in-house system integration service and distribution partnerships with leading motion equipment suppliers, Heason Technology supports the DS series and other Spinea TwinSpin-equipped precision actuator assembles with servo drives and compatible motion controls. The design team at SG Transmission were approached by a manufacturer to increase the existing brake’s torque for security reasons, within the same space envelope to avoid any design changes.
Clive Atkinson, Design Engineer at SG Transmission, said: “This was an interesting project as the new design had to fit inside the exact space of the existing brake, whilst being strong enough to hold a ballistic glass gate. We used the teeth to achieve the high torque in order to support the weight of the door.
With a torque of 250Nm, the brake has the power to prevent forced entry into restricted access areas. The innovative design incorporates teeth which have been carefully designed to carry the torque, ensuring the brake meets the highest safety and security standards.

ransdev presents the future of mobility at the UITP global public transport summit in Montreal
Transdev led several special operations during the UITP global public transport summit in Montreal from May 1517. It was a great opportunity to demonstrate its innovation strategy and spotlight its autonomous vehicle.
Thanks to efficient cooperation between the teams of Transdev Canada, Transdev USA, Autonomous Transport Systems, Cityway, and the communication and sales divisions, Transdev organized various operations which made it a key player during the 3 days of the summit. The company had two stands at the event: one to present its global activities and wealth of expertise, and a second exclusively devoted to the Autonomous Vehicle activity, which was Transdev’s flagship innovation at this global summit. It was also the opportunity to meet many clients, transport authorities, and partners.
Spotlighting Transdev’s vision and its autonomous vehicle On the very first morning, a press conference was organized to present the Group vision of the future of mobility in the presence of Thierry Mallet, Chairman and CEO as well as Mark Joseph, North and South America Director, and Yann Leriche, Chief Performance Officer in charge of the B2C business line at Transdev. It was the chance for them to underline the stakes of mobility and Transdev’s strategy which is based on the concept of P.A.C.E.: tomorrow’s mobility will be Personalized, Autonomous, Connected and Electric. This vision is perfectly illustrated by the autonomous vehicle which was presented in demonstration throughout the summit for all the visitors, as well as the population of Montreal who were curious to test this new form of mobility for the first time.
“The autonomous vehicle offers some key advantages: heightened safety, reduced traffic in cities, 24/7 availability, and above all reliability, as emphasized” - Yann Leriche, Chief Performance Officer in charge of the B2C business line
Just before the UITP summit, on May 12, the people of Montreal experienced their first ever demonstration of an autonomous vehicle, organized by the teams of Transdev and its partner Easymile in Montreal’s Olympic Park. “For the millions of people visiting the Olympic Park and the different facilities in the “Espace pour la vie” zone, these autonomous electric shuttles will be, within a few years, and probably sooner than we think, a new way of getting around in addition to the existing transport options” - Michel Labreque, CEO of the Olympic Park The demonstration was such a success that Thierry Mallet was able to announce, during the conference on May 15, that the shuttle would run again from June 5-9 between the underground station and the Montreal Olympic Park shuttle station.
Our experts have their say Transdev’s contribution to rethinking and constructing mobility was also outlined during the various debates organized during the summit through speeches by Chloé Spano on “Next Steps in the Ticketing Journey”, Yann Leriche on the “Impact of Digitalization on Public Transport” and “Paving the way for shared use of AVs”, Marielle Villamaux on “Putting Customers at the Heart of Service”, François Regembal on “Zero-Emission Buses Made Real” and Dick Alexander on “Rethinking Transport/First + Last Mile.” AMP Magazine | 20 Issue 38

TOBER honors students excelling in mathematics Patrick Stober und E.-M. Ehrismann (HR) make students a present
There was a good atmosphere in the queue. The waiting students had a big grin on their faces. In fact it was just a few hours since the students had received their reports. Siblings Sebastian (9) and Hanna Steppuhn (15) happily held their school reports up in the air. “We both had an A in maths”, they said. This means they were able to pick up their present from the STOBER company in the form of a bag. Along with the bag they
received a voucher for the local Wartberg open-air swimming pool and a beach ball set. “This is now the seventh year we have done this. The idea is to introduce the company to young people. In technical areas this is increasingly important as nowadays less young people are willing to enter a technical profession”, explained Managing Director Patrick Stöber.
And the feedback was good. Right into the afternoon young people excelling in maths came to the Pforzheim company. Sebastian and Hanna on the other hand had already picked up their present. The two of them are now looking forward to their next adventure. Their family is going to the mountains for their summer holiday – something the two whiz kids in maths definitely deserve!

How to clean fouled industrial equipment in minutes with
Power UltrasoundTM
F
ouling, also known as scaling o r p re c i p i t a t i o n fouling involves crystallization of solid salts, oxides and hydroxides from solutions. These are most often water carrying solutions. Non-aqueous precipitation fouling is also known. Chemical precipitation fouling is a very common problem in boilers and heat exchangers operating with e.g. hard water and often results in lime scale. Through changes in temperature, pressure, or solvent evaporation, the concentration of salts exceeds the saturation, leading to a precipitation of solids (usually crystals). For a long time, companies have been searching for a solution that could help them to clean fouling without the headache of stopping production or disassembling their equipment but so far no one was able to do this. Then Finnish-based Altum Technologies decided to take on the challenge and came up with its revolutionary technology of Power UltrasoundTM to clean fouling from equipment such as pipes, tanks and heat exchangers.
What makes this approach unique? There are many unique features about this new fouling cleaning tech: clamp-on attachment system that can be adjusted to any diameter; software with IoT capabilites that can visualize the fouling issue, adjust the parameters and power needed to clean it in the most efficient way possible; control and intensity of the ultrasound power like no one has done it before which allows to clean “hard-as-rock” fouling in minutes. Power UltrasoundTM to clean fouling it’s not all about the input power the cleaning system consumes, it’s about how much ultrasound power Altum can control in the cleaning process, so it has a lot to do with the software which guides the ultrasonic waves. AMP Magazine | 26 Issue 38
It is very common in manufacturing industry to hear about fouling issues and it is a nightmare to clean it. On top of this, time is money and if you can’t continue production because of a maintenance stoppage well just image how that is going to affect your company’s financials and bottom line.
Case study in heat exchanger A good example of when to use Altum’s Power UltrasoundTM is when cleaning fouled heat exchangers. One of their customers had purchased a plate and shell heat exchanger for their chemicals production site in late 2015. After few months in operation they noticed that their new heat exchanger had some fouling issues since flow rates were going down a bit. During a normal maintenance break they decided to clean up the heat exchanger. They used hot pressure water and all sort of chemicals but they didn’t succeed in cleaning the heat exchanger. Since there wasn’t much time to continue the cleaning, the heat exchanger was put back to operation with higher pressure rates in order to achieve the targeted output. This approach in production started to consume more energy than intended Unfortunately, the fouling became worse week after week, and after a few
months of operation the heat exchanger was totally blocked. Their process required titanium grade 11 so to get a new heat exchanger would take months and they couldn’t afford the wait. So the customer tried all traditional ways to improve the cleaning process, for example soda and dry ice blasting, but none of those worked. At this point, the fouling had become extremely hard. This is the point where they started to search for a solution to the fouling issue and found Altum Technologies’ solution. After few discussions they agreed to use Altum’s latest technology because the system had power ultrasound levels like ever seen before. In a few hours, Altum’s new system was able to clean the heat exchanger totally and now their customer is extremely happy of the results. The question is, why wait until your equipment is useless because of fouling? Get to know the revolutionary way to get rid of the problem here: www.altumtechnologies.com
MITSUBISHI MOTORS TO INSTALL THE BIGGEST STAMPING MACHINE IN THE PHILIPPINE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) is set to install the country’s first-ever two thousand ton stamping machine which can produce bulky parts such as vehicle body side outer panel, roof panel, floor panel, and door panel among others. This is in line with the operation of MMPC’s stamping plant facility starting January 2018.
T
he operation of stamping facility will not only enable MMPC to produce its own metal stamped parts but will also help it comply with the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) program’s requirement to manufacture at least fifty percent (50%) of the assembly weight. The operation of the new stamping shop will also generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs and also cut down the delivery lead time of metal stamped parts. MMPC Vice President for Production Engineering Department, Mr. Rolando Francisco said, “For more than half a century that the company has been producing quality vehicles, this is the first time that MMPC will have its own stamping facility.” As part of this new technology, MMPC sent some of its engineers to Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Japan (MMC) to undergo training as it gears to start the operations of its newly constructed stamping shop. Here they learned about the principle of stamping, the different types of stamping processes, machine operation and maintenance, and repair procedures. In addition, they were equipped with the basic knowledge of stamping shop operations as well as caring for the stamping die which is the most crucial tool in the line as it dictates the quality of the output. Francisco also added that MMPC is currently ordering metal stamped parts from Mitsubishi Motors Thailand Co. Ltd. (MMTh) to produce the body assembly of the Mirage hatchback and Mirage G4 sedan. “Given our knowledge now of this stamping technology, we will aim to have high productivity, high material yield ratio and scrap recovery and most importantly having to operate it safely. Above all, MMPC’s goal is to provide high quality automobiles.” 27 | AMP Magazine Issue 38
