Asset Performance Management for the Industrial Internet of Things GE Digital unwraps its first commercially available apps built on the Predix platform-as-a-service architecture.
The manufacturing industry talks a lot about the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), but the discussion right now is really about connectivity. To truly gain value out of smart devices talking to each other, the industry needs applications that leverage this new distributed intelligent architecture. And, in reality, you need more than that. To truly benefit from IIoT, companies need to create a new kind of industrial ecosystem that brings together device connectivity, data integration, analytics, the cloud and mobility. GE Digital’s Predix, built as a cloud-based platform as a service (PaaS), provides a foundation for companies to develop IIoT applications in a securely managed environment. And, while the company has over 7,500 developers working on applications on the PaaS,
GE is just now getting around to creating its own commercially available applications that run on Predix. Last week at Hannover Messe, GE announced the official rollout of the Asset Performance Management (APM) suite. The software works across three tiers of asset management. First, it provides a unified view of machine and equipment health at any time and from anywhere in order to collect reports and make timely decisions. Second, it offers reliability management to predict equipment issues and enable cross-functional collaboration for a single “source of truth” of asset health. And third, the maintenance optimization functionality—available later this year—will help operators develop long-term asset management strategies that balance asset life, maintenance costs and risks. GE has provided glimpses of APM with early adopters such as BP, which is using it as part of a pilot program to reduce unplanned downtime at offshore operations in the Gulf of Mexico. And, while asset management itself is not a new concept, companies have had to integrate a range of disparate solutions to monitor and maintain industrial equipment, GE officials said. They also noted that no comprehensive solution has existed to support the industrial data generated by these assets. For example, Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems can report on how equipment was used and maintained— but cannot analyze the volumes of rich diagnostic data that can be processed with Big Data techniques to predict and prevent equipment issues.

Speaking after the hearing, hSE principal inspector Fiona macneill said: “The plant controller suffered severe and life changing injuries. This case has highlighted the importance for every employer of ensuring that systems are in place for maintaining work equipment in a safe condition, efficient working order and in good repair.” Scottishpower pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the health and Safety at Work etc act 1974, and has been fined £1.75 million.
3D printing masters receives funding top-up
EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, has rebundled all of its energy savings solutions under one umbrella to ease some of the challenges and complications facing manufacturers. The move is designed to provide manufacturers with “a more holistic approach” to a highly technical area with complicated and evolving regulation, the EEF said. Its new Energy Service will comprise a suite of sustainability solutions for building carbon and energy strategies including ISO50001 implementation, energy efficiency, carbon and energy compliance, and training. The EEF said it had also boosted support for managed metering services to help manufacturers identify where and why energy waste occurs. It will supply the benchmarks and data for achieving certification for energy management systems, the EEF said.

The university added that throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to carry out projects within companies to solve real-world manufacturing problems. “graduates will not only possess the engineering skills and competences needed by industry but will also have an understanding of the business and production issues that surround 3d printing projects,” the university said. Technology at the campus, which has already seen £2 million of investment, includes desktop and commercial 3d printers and direct metal laser sintering facilities. Industry News
“We’re excited about the launch of Energy Services as it’s the first time we’ve pulled all our energy, environment and sustainability services together to provide businesses with one cohesive, comprehensive and complete view,” said James Wyse, national sustainability lead at EEF. “It’s an important step because sustainability… remains a challenging and complicated area. There is a pressing need to manage risks and harness opportunities, but very few firms have the in-house skills and knowledge to do this.” Earlier this year the EEF established a series of regional ISO14001 transitioning hubs to help businesses meet new requirements in environmental management systems. The organisation is also offering companies a free diagnostic session to mark the launch of the new Energy Service. 07 | AMP Magazine July 2016
Honeywell Creates New Division Based on the

s manufacturing systems grow more complex, it has become more important for automation suppliers to provide not only the components but an easier means to a complete solution. This trend carries over into the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), where it’s not always easy for production operations to make the best use of the data that’s being gathered to improve their processes. So automation suppliers are increasingly creating business units and systems dedicated to digital deployment to best leverage the IIoT technologies they’re offering. The latest announcement comes from Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS), which has established a Digital Transformation unit to help manufacturers harness the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and more rapidly deploy the technologies that will allow them to better manage and analyze data.
Internet of thIngs The Digital Transformation unit will help Honeywell Process Solutions’ customers more easily leverage the data, analytical, cloud and cybersecurity capabilities available. “Honeywell’s deep expertise in IIoT allows us to solve customer challenges by consolidating data in the cloud from multiple disparate systems, applying higher-level analytics and leveraging experts who are often physically remote from the customer site,” Hird said.

Tata Steel completes sale of European unit Tata Steel UK has announced completion of the sale of its Long Products Europe business to Greybull Capital.
The Long Products Europe business, which includes the Scunthorpe steelworks and two mills in Teesside, has undergone a year-long restructuring of assets to target higher-value markets. The business currently employs 4,400 people in the UK and 400 in France. “Employees and trade unions have worked closely with the Long Products Europe management team to improve the business’ prospects, putting it in a more competitive position than it has been for many years,” said Bimlendra Jha, executive chairman of the Long Products Europe business and chief executive of Tata Steel UK. “It is through their dedication and hard work that we are in this position today in spite of continued challenges in the market.” A sale price was not revealed, however previous
reports in the Financial Times indicated the companies had agreed on a nominal £1. Tata Steel did not comment on its progress in finding bidders for the remainder of its UK steel business. However, last month the company said it had received seven expressions of interest.
AGVs and Robotics Converge
Many of the same technologies that have led to the proliferation of collaborative robots are also changing how we think about automated guided vehicles. Chances are you either have an iRobot Roomba at home or are at least familiar with its operation. These robotic floor cleaners—using a combination of sensors and microprocessors— independently navigate around your house to clean your floors, virtually eliminating the need for you to haul out the vacuum cleaner (unless you have stairs, of course). By applying a similar design approach to automated guided vehicles, suppliers of mobile, logisticsoriented robots are changing the AGV market. If you’re wondering about the potential for this market, the International Federation of Robotics predicts that the mobile robot industry is expected to achieve total sales of 14,500 units and revenue of $20 billion over the next three years.
Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR). Whereas AGVs require tracking systems (either embedded in the concrete floor of the facility or adhered to it) to guide them, the MiR100 uses built-in scanning sensors, a 3D camera and ultrasound to navigate its way around a facility. Though MiR (based in Denmark and founded in 2013) is new to the U.S. market, having just opened its first U.S. office in April, the company currently supplies its MiR100 to several global manufacturers, such as Leoni, Flextronics and Continental.
it uses a more intuitive interface that can be accessed on an iOS or Android device or PC. According to MiR, the robot can either self identify its surroundings via the onboard sensors and cameras, or have 3D drawings of the building layout imported. The sensors and cameras used by MiR reportedly enable “safe, collaborative operation” around people, as the robot will stop and automatically route itself around people or objects. It complies with the EN 1525 safety standard for driverless trucks.
MiR100 has a carrying capacity of 220 pounds and can tow approximately 660 pounds. It also has custom modules that can be added to address various logistics/hauling requirements. The battery enables up to 15 hours of operation or 20 km of travel.
Further highlighting the connection between the mobile and collaborative robot industries, Thomas Visti, CEO of MiR, previously served as chief commercial officer at Universal Robots from 2009-2014 before joining MiR.

Hydrostatic pressure is commonly described “The pressure equivalent to that exerted on a surface by a column of water of a given height due to the force of gravity”. A liquid column above the pressure sensor creates hydrostatic pressure, which is a direct indicator for the liquid level. Generally, the standard unit of measurement is calibrated in metres of water gauge (mWG). This may sometimes be referred to as metres of water column (mWC), or metres of H2O (mH2O).

how doeS An eSi hydroStAtiC level trAnSMitter work?
In most applications the liquid is subjected to atmospheric pressure. To provide accurate electrical measurement it is important that readings are compensated to allow for any changes in atmospheric (barometric) pressure. This compensation is achieved by using a vented cable which the ESI sensor to “breathe” to the atmosphere. This is done through a small nylon tube that runs through the cable which
The measuring cell of the pressure sensor detects small changes in hydrostatic pressure, which increases or decreases according to the filling level. The ESI sensor is powered by a vented cable and is submerged into the liquid to be monitored. The sensor converts the acting pressure into an electrical signal. Most users will typically require a 4-20mA output, enabling signals to be transmitted

ensures that the output reading is relative to atmosphere. This is particularly important for the measurement of low levels of liquid, where changes in barometric pressure can significantly affect the true reading of level. For example, at high altitude where low atmospheric pressure is present. In order to calibrate the device, a factor is used to convert bar to mWG. This ensures the accuracy of the reading. The standard unit of measurement is calibrated in meters of water gauge (mWG). ESI can calibrate and label sensors in units of measure determined by particular applications. For example in a diesel tank application the sensor can be calibrated in meters of diesel. In most applications the sensor can be connected to a system via a simple IP67 rated terminal box, with glands to prevent water ingress. In certain applications, where over a long period of time moisture from high humidity may enter the vented tube it is advisable to use a desiccant filter. The desiccant absorbs moist air, preventing any moisture travelling to the sensing element and causing a short circuit.
which is used to compensate for changes in atmospheric pressure. ESI sensors are available with ATEX and IECEx certification and can therefore be used in similar circumstances where there is a risk of explosion. For example, monitoring the water levels in coal seam gas wells. ESI Hydrostatic Level sensors are also well suited to measuring the levels of fluids in storage tanks. The sensor is lowered to the bottom of the tank via an access hole in its top. The sensor cable is then connected back to a monitor, data logger, or PLC. Other areas where Hydrostatic level sensors can be effectively used are in the measuring of the level of water in rivers and reservoirs. Hydrostatic level sensors are typically manufactured from 316l stainless steel. This makes them suitable for immersion in most media. Other materials such as plastic, titanium and hastalloy C may be used to ensure compatibility with whatever medium is being measured, where stainless steel is not suitable. A polyurethane jacketed vented cable ensures excellent media compatibility, with oil for example. Other materials, such as nylon and PTFE may be used if the medium requires it.

Hydrostatic level sensors can be permanently immersed in boreholes for measuring the depth of the water table for example. The water table is the underground depth at which the ground is totally saturated. Deep boreholes with an average diameter of 25mm are drilled and left to fill to the level of the water table. A small diameter submersible pressure sensor is lowered down the borehole to accurately measure the level. In this type of application the control system would normally incorporate a barometric sensor, Sensors & Controls

Not your average connector manufacturer The Company - for more than 75 years, ODU has been a problem-solving designer of premium connectors. From magnetic resonance tomography to kitchen utensils to submarines, the connector systems developed and manufactured by ODU are found in all industry sectors and all around the world. Head¬quartered in Mühldorf Germany, the ODU Group has an international production and distribution network throughout Europe, North America, and Asia. History - in 1937, Otto Dunkel built the first ionospheric transmitters, broadcasting messages into the atmosphere, to be reflected and then received in another location. These transmission presented many challenges, particularly with the plug contacts of the broadcasting system. Looking out his window one day, Dunkel saw a man with a twig-broom sweeping up leaves and this gave him the idea for an entirely new type of contact – the springwire contact. A year later Dunkel patented his invention: The deflecting pin contact - now known around the world as ODU SPRINGTAC. Multiple, individually-operating, springwires are incorporated into each contact [even the smallest 0.76mm dia contact has 15 springwires] - each springwire is in contact with the pin, ensuring an extremely high number of mating cycles and stable low contact resistance.
Markets - connectors from ODU ensure reliable transmission of power, signals, data, and media in numerous demanding applications in the growth markets of medical, military & security and energy, as well as in established sectors such as industrial electronics, test & measurement, and automotive.
Modular Product – for the industrial equipment OEM, the the rectan-
gular connector system, ODU-MAC, offers nearly limitless configurations due to a flexible modular build. Reliable and compact, most ODU-MAC modules are based on ODU SPRINGTAC contacts with springwire technology, ensuring the highest level of contact stability even under increased vibration.
The ODU-MAC is available in two formats – in a DIN housing for manual operation and in an aluminium frame for automatic docking. Contacts can be added and varied by the customer using an on-line configurator, backed-up by technical support. Whether in connector technology for the Finnish state railway, as an interface with the analysis unit of heart catheter systems, or in pick-and-place machines, the ODU-MAC ensures reliable safety, quick trans¬mission, and a high number of mating cycles. Customers report no failures in the aluminium docking frame version of the ODU-MAC even after more than one million mating cycles.
So, what’s new? ODU has developed a new interface housing for the ODU-MAC, an add-on solution created specifically to provide optimal strain relief and also allow for the inclusion of additional circuit-boards and components. The new housing is available for all six docking frames, which are especially designed to tackle the challenges of automatic docking situations. ODU can deliver complete system solutions to its clients from a single source, including the connector, matching interface housing and, if needed, the complete cable assembly. NEC Class 2 approval for Murrelektronik’s MICO range Efficient NEC Class 2 circuits are now a reality after eight of Murrelektronik’s MICO power distribution modules have been given NEC Class 2 approval. What does this mean for you? Cost-effective, compact and simpler NEC Class 2 circuits.
in high costs, required a lot of cabinet space and considerable wiring effort. With Murrelektronik’s NEC Class 2 approved MICOs, you can design NEC Class 2 circuits even faster, in a more compact and cost effective way.
Murrelektronik’s MICO is a proven solution for intelligent power distribution and efficient protection of load circuits in UL508A cabinets. Eight MICO redundancy modules are now available with NEC Class 2 approval making it possible to design efficient NEC Class 2 circuits.
What are class 2 circuits? A Class 2 circuit is the portion of the wiring system between the load side of a Class 2 power source and the connected equipment. Class 2 circuits have limited energy and a maximum power of 100VA. According to the UL definition, there is neither the risk of electrical fires nor electric shock due to the limited energy in these circuits. Therefore, according to UL508A, the cabinet components used in a Class 2 circuit don’t require UL approval. Up to now, an individual NEC Class 2 approved power supply was used for every circuit of this kind. This resulted AMP Magazine | 32 July 2016
All you need is a standard power supply (that doesn’t necessarily have to be NEC Class 2 approved) combined with a MICO to easily create two, four or eight separate load circuits with limited energy. By connecting several MICO power supply redundancy modules with their integrated bridging system, the number of channels can be increased up to a total current of 40A. Now the following cabinet components in these NEC Class 2 circuits don’t require UL approval. This prevents a lot of paperwork.
Features of MICO supply units MICO offers additional benefits for circuit design with its proven functions including: channel-specific switch off in the event of overload, a visual warning notice, saving of error messages and cascading start of current paths – making it possible to use a smaller power supply. An alarm output can be connected to a PLC or an alarm indicator lamp. MICO Basic is Murrelektronik’s intelligent power distribution module for 24 V DC applications. It monitors the power distribution and reacts to short circuits by shutting the channel down as late as possible but as early as necessary. MICO Basic is perfect for any application that protection a lot of sensors and actuators with similar demands. The current ranges are preset and the modules monitor four or eight channels with 2, 4 or 6 A.
MICO Classic is the intelligent power distribution module from Murrelektronik for 24 V DC applications. This cabinet component monitors currents on up to four channels. It indicates when approaching the maximum load and it shuts the channel off if there’s a short circuits or overload. In 2 and 4 channel variants – each channel max. overload current is adjustable up to 10A. MICO Fuse is the ideal alternative to using individual safety terminals. The compact module features eight sockets for glass tube fuses that can easily be serviced from the front of the module. It protects up to eight channels. The MICO FUSE 24 LED version has additional LEDs that indicate the operating condition of each channel in red and green. A group alarm contact sends the current status to the control. The universal module MICO Fuse 250 covers the complete range from 0 to 250 V AC/ DC. MICO+ is the intelligent power distribution module from Murrelektronik for 24 V DC applications. This cabinet component monitors currents on up to four channels. It indicates when approaching the maximum load and it shuts the channel off if there’s a short circuits or overload. Each channel is adjustable up to 10A. The MICO+ can be switched ‘off’ by the control platform in the event that the connected loads are not required – thus offering energy savings. A direct ApproAch to electroless nickel quAlity control
E
lectroless nickel plating processes, commonly used in the automotive, aerospace and printed circuit board industries, are controlled for both thickness and composition. The preferred method for analysing electroless nickel properties is X-ray fluorescence (XRF). This is because it is quick – on the order of seconds, nondestructive, requires no chemicals or gases, involves little or no sample preparation and is straightforward enough to be performed by minimally trained production staff. XRF instruments have been employed widely for many years to determine elemental composition and coating thickness, and are becoming increasingly advanced to address more demanding analytical requirements. XRF instruments are available in many different forms but two are considered most appropriate for measuring electroless nickel plating: microspot and handheld. Microspot analysers, such as the Oxford Instruments MAXXI 6, are high-power benchtop instruments which mechanically reduce the output from an X-ray source down to the micrometer range in order to measure small features or small components. Handheld analysers, such as the Oxford Instruments X-MET8000, are miniaturised versions of benchtop equipment, consisting of the same critical components. Whilst the measurement area of handheld instruments is typically larger than their microspot counterparts, they have an advantage in portability, allowing the user to measure parts anywhere the instrument can be carried. Both types of analysers have been commercially available for many years; however they traditionally had a limitation in that they could not directly measure the composition of the electroless nickel. The reason for this is that electroless nickel AMP Magazine | 38 July 2016
is comprised of nickel, a relatively easy element for XRF to detect, and phosphorus, which has relatively low X-ray energy. Without specialised hardware, XRF instruments cannot “see” phosphorus, and therefore relied on mathematical modeling to determine coating thickness only, without a way to quantify composition. Advances in XRF technology such as high-definition Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) now make it possible to measure both nickel and phosphorous content directly, allowing for both the coating thickness and composition to be determined simultaneously. Current generations of microspot and handheld XRF analysers use a suitable combination of X-ray tube (optimised to excite phosphorus) and detector (sensitive enough to detect lowenergy elements), as well as geometry that minimises the distance between the tube, sample and detector to ensure maximum transmission of the phosphorus X-rays. As the hardware has improved, so has the analytical software. Operators with little training can confidently obtain the same results as expert technical staff.
Taking advantage of this optimised hardware enables XRF to provide critical analysis for quality control throughout the electroless nickel plating process, providing accurate and precise measurement of the deposited thickness and composition of the coating in varying ratios. Over a range of substrates including aluminium, steel, and copper alloys, choose microspot or handheld XRF analysers to ensure electroless nickel coatings are applied at the right thickness and composition to achieve desired metallurgical properties while minimising costs from over-plating.
