It seems that only last week we were welcoming in the new year and now already Easter is almost upon us! But fear not – there’s a whole host of things going on over the holidays and the good news is that we’ve compiled a selection for you (pages 4 to 8).

Swamp Circus has a range of activity workshops coming up in April for the little ones, as well as The Wellbeing Festival, which promises stalls, bands and a big top cabaret, among other delights. Why not head to Newquay for a swashbuckling adventure at Pirate’s Quest, in search of the legendary Golden Egg? Perhaps the whole family could try a few rounds at Country Skittles, go bananas at the Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary, let off steam at Jungle Jack’s soft play centre, or simply enjoy a refreshing ice cream at Callestick Farm. If, on the otherhand, like so many parents, you need a childcare solution over the holidays, Flying Starts Nurseries and Out of School Clubs are offering an action-packed programme to keep the young ones suitably entertained (page 5).

Our ‘Let’s create!’ crafts page returns with some extremely cute Easter-inspired chick bookmarks (page 15), once again with a little help from our friends at Class Art. I’m sure there will be plenty of chocolate eggs about, but if you’re looking for an alternative, why not have a go at creating our Easter egg cake, topped with fruit, courtesy of Lizzie at Little Kitchen Magicians (page 18). Finally, in ‘Bookworms’, we suggest a range of fabulous page turners (page 12) – so, when not out exploring, you can find a cosy corner to snuggle up with a good book.

Outset helps Pip focus on her future Commercial photographer Pip Hayler is successfully running her own business while raising a family thanks to support from business start-up experts, Outset Cornwall. Following a move to Cornwall more than a decade ago, the photography graduate wanted a career where she could use her degree while looking after her young daughter.

Pip’s local Job Centre Plus put her in touch with Outset, which provides information sessions, workshops and one-to-one advice for those looking to set up a new business. “Outset Online was fantastic,” praises Pip. “It allowed me to work at my own pace and at times that suited my family.”

Easter fun at Trebah Spring is the perfect time to visit Trebah Garden, an award winning tourist attraction and garden of international renown situated on the Helford river near the nautical town of Falmouth.

ood vision is critical to a child’s early educational, functional, and social development. Parents should be aware that it is essential to address the child’s visual needs as early as possible.

Healthy sight can contribute to a healthy start in life.

A child’s visual system develops over the first few years of their life. Amblyopia (lazy eye) is best treated before the age of four but continued improvement can be made up to the age of seven; after this critical period, perfect vision cannot be achieved. Amblyopia and squints are evident by the age of four and may be detected by the parent, health visitor or a teacher, but if they are not picked up and if a child has an uncorrected refractive error it will impact on the child’s ability to perform well at school. It may also hinder the child in later life to enter certain professions where good eyesight is a prime requirement.

The eyes continue to develop during childhood. The majority of children at birth are long sighted (hypermetropic) which, if within normal limits, will correct itself as the child matures. However if a refractive error is not properly corrected there is a risk of permanently poor vision.

Children’s eyes, as well as their visual needs, differ from those of adults in a number of important ways. A child’s immature visual system is more prone

to irreversible damage. It’s therefore important to have your child regularly assessed by a registered optical professional.

The main childhood eye problems relate to improper development of the visual system. Conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (squint) and uncorrected refractive error (short sightedness [myopia], long sightedness and astigmatism) are the most common.

They are also all related. If a child has a squint, or if one eye has a significantly different refractive error from the other, this will lead, if uncorrected, to a lazy eye. The less dominant eye is effectively “switched off” and does not develop properly. The child accommodates to use the eye which is least long-sighted which leaves the other eye with reduced visual acuity.

In the UK all children under-16 and those under-19 and in full-time education qualify for a free NHS-funded sight test. Remarkably only 22 per cent of under-16s have ever had a sight test. So why not book in a test with Reid and Gordon in Truro now?

This Easter cake is also a good alternative to Simnel cake.

You can be creative with the toppings to your heart’s desire – especially as it’s a fun way of tempting children to try new fruits!
