THE scoop Ideas for you and your pooch, from hotel stays to dog-friendly outings.

Introducing your local training expert!

Sometimes our favourite furry friends need a little help in the right direction, which is precisely what Ben Jordan of Bark Busters is here for! Just some of the common issues Ben can help with are aggression, anti-social behaviour, barking, destruction and recall. With almost 30 years’ experience in helping dogs to draw from, Bark Busters can help you and your hound enjoy a happy, stress-free life together. Cornwall’s dog training and behavioural therapist for Bark Busters, Ben has seen it all when it comes to doggie behavioural issues, and it’s clear to see that he is an expert on all-things canine!

Happy hounds

Did you know that your dog can be over-exercised but under-stimulated? Canine experts, Penmellyn Vet Group can’t recommend the benefits of mental enrichment enough. As daylight hours diminish and the weather turns, we can all be guilty of cutting ‘walkies’ short, so now is a great time to get a balance between outdoor and mental activity. Enrichment comes in many forms from social, cognitive and physical, to sensory, feeding and toys, and is a brilliant way to bond and build communication with your dog. Social enrichment can also help if you are visiting or holidaying in a new place and will help to build confidence.

With a very high success rate, doggie behavioural problems could be a thing of the past – simply give Ben a call! And if you’re thinking of getting a new puppy, planning a session with Ben is a great way of starting the way you mean to go on, so that you and your pooch can go about enjoying the great outdoors with confidence.

Toy and feeding enrichment are particularly beneficial if your puppy isn’t spayed, or is yet to be spayed, it can help to keep her occupied and happy during their own ‘lockdown’. Enrichment doesn’t need take up a lot time and can even help your dog live a longer happier life. So, why not get in touch with Penmellyn Vet Group for some recommendations and ideas?

Offering freshly cooked all-day breakfasts as well as lunches, the whole menu is cooked from scratch, catering for vegans, gluten allergies and vegetarians. The café is pleased to announce that it’s also taking part in the government’s new ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme! Today we had brunch, toastie and chips, full breakfast, all really nice. The staff are friendly and

efficient, our whippet loves it there and goes straight to the dog biscuit jar!” For more information call 07948 613280 or visit harbourview

The importance

of 24-hour care It’s always worth thinking about what might happen to your pet in an out-of-hours emergency, be that at night or during the weekend. It makes sense, therefore, to find a surgery that covers out-of-hours care, so that you have peace of mind that whatever happens, and whenever it occurs, your pet will be well looked after. It’s also worth bearing in mind whether the surgery you’re registered with provides 24-hour nursing care, so that your poorly pet isn’t left frightened and alone. Kernow Vets is one example of a veterinary team in Cornwall that provides the assurance of round-the-clock care, meaning that whether you’re home or away, you’ll be able to rest assured that they’ll be there for you and your pet. Dedicated and professional, Kernow Vets offer animal owners a comprehensive service, and with a Pet Health Club that covers everything you’re likely to need, from a free micro chip and twice-yearly health checks, to a monthly worming plan and much, much more, it’s well worth giving the team a call and guaranteeing you and your pet’s future peace of mind.

Is your pooch picture paw-fect? Our dogs are more than just our pets. They’re much-loved companions who bring happiness and joy into our lives. In short, there’s a reason we call them man’s best friend! A wonderful way to celebrate them and their fabulous personalities is to bring them along to their very own photoshoot. The Pawtrait Studio, Truro, is a dedicated pet photography studio that offers a fun and relaxed experience for everyone. Photoshoots take place in the studio or, if pets prefer, at a favourite location outdoors, and it’s fair to say that our beautiful

Louise McLeod has been a professional photographer for over 10 years, creating beautiful images that you’ll treasure for years to come. A pet portrait session makes a perfect present for the dog lover in your life, and gift vouchers are available. For more information call 07789 062050 or visit www.thepawtraitstudio.co.uk

A dog walk in Cornwall was always my idea of an Idyllic treat right up unnl I had to pick up my dogs poop! Carrying that smelly awkward bag in my hand for ages was inconvenient and unpleasant. Of course leaving poop or bags of poop is unsociable, deadly to livestock and bad for the environment! That’s why I invented The Dicky Bag an amazingly convenient way to do the right thing, lightweight, odourproof, machine washable portable bin, made in Cornwall from Neoprene rubber. Easily aaached to anything including all dog leads, with the Karabiner, Velcro Strap or the Belt Loop. I am so proud that the UK Naaonal Parks have also decided to partner with my ny Cornish Company. DAYS!

Jackie Warden has built a stellar reputation for providing the ultimate in Cornish canine day care.

W

hether you live down here and have a busy working schedule, or are holidaying with your hound and are unable to take them to particular ‘human-only’ attractions, it can be difficult knowing what to do. Even harder is leaving your furry friend at a kennel for the day, guilty in the knowledge that you’re having the best of times while they’re waiting for you to return. This is where Jackie Warden, founder of Happy Dogs Day Care, comes in. Jackie took the plunge to set up the business around eight years ago, being tired of the mundane nine-tofive that she’d never loved. She tells us: “I’ve never looked back. For years, I knew I wanted to work with dogs. The problem always seemed to be that

making a living from it just didn’t seem possible. I guess it’s always difficult to imagine making a full-time living out of the things we love!” But that’s exactly what she does, and it’s fair to say that Jackie has built a sterling reputation. Based between Helston and Penzance in the sleepy village of Breage, Jackie takes her four-legged guests on multiple walks every day, all year round. Whether it’s down to Longrock beach looking out to St Michael’s Mount, or in the fields and meadows surrounding Breage, all of the dogs staying with Jackie have a great time! “The thing I love most about my job is watching the dogs interact and socialise,” Jackie explains. “Their relationships change and develop – I have a steady stream of regular dogs that come in for day care, as well as boarders whose owners go away. The regular guests soon become fast friends and now, when they arrive in the mornings and see their mates, they’re always really excited.” For Jackie, building relationships with animals is second nature, and it’s in this that her clients have found themselves able to place their trust. It seems that no matter how weird, whacky, excitable or calm her four-legged guests are, the way she interacts with the many and varied characters in her care never fails to bring out the best in man’s best friend. Activities with your dog during your stay at the Falmouth Hotel.

f you’re planning a trip to Cornwall, it’s nice to know that your dog needn’t ever go to the kennels again! Instead, they’re invited to sample the luxury and relaxed atmosphere of the Falmouth Hotel – staffed by a team that understands how dogs are very much part of the family. Here are three of the Falmouth Hotel’s top activities for you and your furry friend to make the most of this popular coastal destination.

Stay in a sea view room! The Falmouth Hotel has many dog-friendly rooms, including standard sea-view rooms. They’re also allowed on the hotel grounds on a lead, and charged at just £15 a night, it’s really a no-brainer to bring your waggy tailed friend along!

If you have a dog, the likelihood is that when you think ‘Cornwall’, you imagine long walks along the sand with your canine bounding to and fro to their heart’s content. One of Falmouth’s most popular beaches, Gyllyngvase is the perfect place to enjoy an early morning walk at the water’s edge – the perfect start to the day – or an early evening stroll, the perfect way to work up an appetite, or alternatively, to walk off that delicious seafood supper! It does have a seasonal dog ban in place between 15th May and 30th September, however the ban only applies between 10am and 6pm.

3

With Pendennis Castle viewable from the hotel, a trip to this iconic and historic site of interest is too tempting to resist. Built to guard the mouth of the river during the reign of Henry VIII, dogs are welcome on leads to explore Pendennis Castle, inside and out! OF THE BEST DOG-FRIENDLY EXPERIENCES AT HELIGAN CAMPSITE

1

DOG-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION On the south coast of Cornwall, perched above the glittering waters of Mevagissey, lies Heligan Caravan and Camping Park. Five of the park’s chalets are dog friendly, including Caerhays for the first time this year. Recently refurbished, Caerhays offers a deluxe bungalow option, sleeping up to six people in a spacious and tastefully decorated holiday home, so you can enjoy the beauty of the Heligan campsite from absolute comfort.

3

DOG-FRIENDLY BEACHES NEARBY Cornwall boasts a stunning array of over 300 beaches and coves, all ripe for exploring. Hop in the car and make the short journey to Hemmick beach, where dogs are allowed all year round. If you’re visiting outside of peak season, be sure to visit Porthpean or stroll down to the stunning Pentewan beach, right on the doorstep. Both beaches operate a seasonal dog ban so please check before you visit.

4 2

DOG-FRIENDLY CAMPING OR TOURING Dogs are welcome on the campsite no matter which form of accommodation you prefer. Whether it’s under canvas or relaxing in a motorhome, at Heligan, the team knows that sleeping under the stars is that little bit better with your canine companion. And for autumn 2020, Heligan Campsite's new state-of-the-art amenity block will be open, complete with dog showers, so you can wash your pup after a busy day spent adventuring.

DOG-FRIENDLY WALKS There are a whole host of walks to enjoy along the Roseland Heritage Coast thanks to the South West Coast Path, but one of our favourites has to be from Heligan to Mevagissey. Following the path of a pre-historic tin stream, the route passes through the Pentewan Valley and by a medieval settlement associated with the Lost Gardens of Heligan, before reaching the picturesque fishing village of Mevagissey.

5

DOG-FRIENDLY PUBS There are numerous dog-friendly pubs in Mevagissey, including the Harbour Tavern, The Fountain Inn, The Sharksfin and The Ship Inn. This means you can couple your explorations with a bite to eat in comfort, taking in the beautiful harbour views and relaxing a while, before heading back to the campsite. To book your stay, be sure to contact the team or visit the website! FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL 01726 842714 OR VISIT WWW.HELIGANCAMPSITE.COM

I

nspired by Slickers Doghouse’s original dog slings, the new range enjoys the added benefit of new features and a waterproof fabric, which promises to keep your dog warm and dry in the rainy weather. The new sling evenly distributes the weight of your pooch, making it easier than ever to carry them, and whether you use it for public transport, to keep young pups by your side, or to help older dogs keep up on those long rambling walks, it can be used all day, helping to relieve tension in your neck, back, shoulders and arms. Having listened to her customers’ requests, Slickers Doghouse owner, Lisa, has also incorporated a handy pocket on the sling strap for a mobile phone. But not just that; the new improved design also includes a rain cover for your furry friend to hide under, perfect if they’re having 40 winks or simply need to take shelter from a downpour. An incorporated eyelet strap allows you to secure the cover down, or alternatively keep it loose, depending on your pup’s needs. Finally, Lisa tells us: “For added security, we’ve also included an adjustable clip restraint to keep your dog secure. As well as D-rings on the inside and the outside of the sling, in order to attach accessories such as treat bags.”

With the option of longer straps for added comfort, and available in a range of sizes to suit you and your pet, if you’re planning on exploring the reaches of Cornwall’s coastline and want to ensure your dog can enjoy the adventure with you, whatever the weather throws at you, the new waterproof slings from Slickers Doghouse are a must-have accessory. With that in mind, be sure to pop into this Padstow emporium of all things poochy and get yours! FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL 07917 005071 OR VISIT WWW.SLICKERSDOGHOUSE.CO.UK

OF THE BEST DOG-FRIENDLY WALKS

Everyone who has a dog will know that as soon as you reach for their lead a whole world of excitement is unleashed. So, if you want to give your pup the treat of a great walk in Cornwall this year, here are three of our favourites to give you some adventure inspiration.

1

LANHYDROCK’S RESPRYN RAMBLE A circular walk around the Lanhydrock estate that takes in fantastic scenery along the river Fowey and through ancient woodland. Rich in history and wildlife, this is a brilliant walk that passes over Respryn bridge through a woodland of magnificent old oak trees and across grassy hills. It’s only a mile long and is classed as an easy stroll that will take you 30 minutes, perfect to give you and your pooch a quick dose of nature.

2

SHIPWRECKS AND SCENIC WALKS Starting from the National Trust Car Park at Winnianton Farm, your first steps take in Winnianton Manor – one of the most important Dark Age settlements in Cornwall. From here you pass Dollar Cove – named after the wreck of a Spanish ship that was laden with silver dollars. You then continue across the fields at Halzephron Head, beyond which you will see spectacular views across Mount’s Bay to

Loe Bar, Porthleven and further afield to St Micheal’s Mount. You’re then able to continue back to the car park. Another easy walk of 30 minutes that takes in beautiful stretches of Cornwall’s coastline.

3

LANTIVET BAY CIRCULAR WALK Providing an opportunity to spend some time on the beach as well as discovering a landscape with a rich fishing and smuggling heritage. This is a longer, more difficult walk than the previous two, taking two hours and leading along steeper sections of the coast path. From the National Trust car park at Lantivet Bay, head to Lantivet beach and continue to Pencarrow Head. Follow the coast path until you reach a fork in the path then turn inland and join the path across the fields to the road which will lead you back to Lantic car park.

OF THE BEST

DOG-FRIENDLY BEACHES Enjoy sun, sea and sandy paws on these beautiful dog-friendly beaches.

 Perranporth

T

hankfully for dog lovers, there is a plethora of dog-friendly beaches dotted around the Duchy. Meaning that your pups can race along the sand and splash into the surf throughout the year, because everyone knows that dogs love getting sandy paws. So, with that in mind, here are three of our personal favourites.

1

PERRANPORTH BEACH Located on the north coast, Perranporth has one of the longest stretches of golden sand that you’ll find anywhere in Cornwall, perfect for long strolls with your four-legged friend. It’s also possible to head up into the sand dunes and lead a circular route back to the car park. Not to mention that the Watering Hole bar on the beach is also dog friendly, so you can enjoy a rest and refuel with your pup in tow.

 Porthkid ney

2

PORTHKIDNEY BEACH Situated just outside St Ives near Hayle rivermouth, you’ll find Porthkidney beach. Surrounded by other beautiful beaches such as Gwithian and Carbis Bay, Porthkidney is the only one that’s dog friendly throughout the year, so if you’re based near St Ives or Gwithian, you know your pup can have just as much fun on the beach as you.

3  Kennack

KENNACK SANDS Last but by no means least is Kennack Sands on the Lizard peninsula. This is a wild and rugged area of Cornwall renowned for its interesting geography and rich diversity of flora and fauna. It’s a beautiful beach to visit, however, bear in mind that only the part of the beach that’s furthest from the car park is dog friendly throughout the year. So, there you have it! Three of our favourite dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall, from the vast stretches of sand on the north coast to the sheltered coves of the south. This is but a selection of the many dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall so get out and get exploring! As always, we recommend checking the specific dog restrictions for your local beach before venturing out.
