A toast to Curio’s latest offering! From the award-winning Curio Spirits Company, Cornish Cup is a summer tipple inspired by the traditional punch used by the British Navy during the 17th century.

With events taking place in venues across the town, this year’s productions include Straviansky’s The Rite of Spring, Debussy’s Estampes, Haydn String Quartet’s Op. 77 No. 1, and Thomas Ades’ The Four Quarters. Highlights of a strong recital programme include Susan Tomes, Charles Owen and Dominic Degavino, plus the Castalian and John Law Quartets.

Using their Mullion Dry Gin base, the team of distillers have blended their own bespoke botanicals to create a Chai tea infused in the Cornish Cup. In terms of flavour, expect citrus orange, malty Assam, cinnamon, cardamom and Cornish honey. Designed to be enjoyed communally, mixed with seasonal sippers such as lemonade with thyme or ginger beer, this is the perfect convivial drink. Yet another big hit from the award-winning, Mullion based spirit company, Cornish Cup is testament to Curio’s dedication to the craft of distillery.

If this sounds like your idea of a festival heaven, with a superb selection of stays around the town and a wealth of fantastic restaurants hiding in tucked away locations along its historic streets, be sure to book your tickets soon! Cornish Tea makes

national impression The Cornish Tea and Coffee Company is the UK’s fastest growing tea and coffee producer. A family business with four generations’ experience stretching back to the 1800s, Cornish Tea provides its hand-blended selection of loose leaf teas in beautiful presentation jars – the most wonderful accompaniment to the classic British afternoon tea. This being the case, we weren’t surprised to hear that Cornish hotel, Polurrian on the Lizard – which serves Cornish Tea in both their restaurant and in their luxurious rooms – recently won ‘Best Presented Afternoon Tea of the Year’ from the London-held Food and Beverage Magazine Awards. In fact, it was the only hotel in the south west to be shortlisted to the final Comprising a selection of sweet and savoury treats and served with a glass of refreshing Camel Valley Brut, Cornish sparkling wine and, crucially, a cup of Cornish Tea’s Smugglers Brew, Polurrian’s afternoon tea blew the judges away. Cornish Tea Owner, Duncan Bond and his team have a superb relationship with the hotel, supplying them with their company’s

delicious loose-leaf teas, so Duncan was understandably delighted by the result, telling us “we’re incredibly proud to support the Polurrian on the Lizard.” But it’s not just the speciality hand-blended teas and hand-roasted coffees that this superb Cornish firm has become renowned for. Along with his team, Duncan offers exceptional customer service too, distributing to businesses throughout the UK and abroad, as well as offering quarterly deliveries to households across the UK, ensuring you never run out of tea or coffee again!

Simon Jewell set for exciting Porthleven exhibition Taking place from Friday 20th September to Thursday 26th September at The Customs House Gallery, on Porthleven’s harbourside, the Simon Jewell exhibition offers you the opportunity to admire his stunning paintings. With a focus on the Cornish landscape and the coast of the Lizard peninsula in particular, Simon’s work aims to convey emotion and a distilled sense of place. Whilst discussing his painting techniques Simon tells us: “When painting I use oils and acrylic, avoiding using a brush where possible and instead using a palette knife, my hands and found objects.” There will be a private viewing for Simon on Saturday 21st September from 2pm until pm and you can witness him painting first hand in the gallery on Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th September. Typical of The Customs House Gallery’s calendar of events, this exhibition is most certainly not to be missed. For more information call 01326 569365 or visit www.cornwall-art.co.uk

Cornwall is experiencing yet another incredible summer. The natural light here has been an inspiration for artists from around the world for many years. Retallack Kitchens like to think that their kitchens not only reflect the beautiful county in which they are based, but draw inspiration from their surroundings too. Although proprietors David and Jo have both spent most of their lives in Cornwall, they never tire of the amazing views and colours that surround them: deep blues to match the seas and sky; coppers reflecting the sunsets that enhance the coastline. These colours work in nature, so why not in your kitchen? With all tastes and styles catered for by Retallack Kitchens, David and Jo like to think they can provide you with a unique

look. No matter what the style, they can still incorporate all modern day appliances without compromising on the look. The most sought-after modern convenience at present is the hot water tap, most of which now incorporate filtered cold water too. These are ideal for people not wanting the bother of a kettle, or extra taps or jugs cluttering up the sleek lines of their new kitchen and covering their prized new worktop. So much variety and choice can be imposing when starting to consider a new kitchen, which is where David and Jo come in, advising and guiding you through the options and choices. Being an independent, family run company, Retallack Kitchens advise without bias, creating exactly what you want and need.

DID YOU KNOW? In 2008 Heligan was granted National Collection Holder status by Plant Heritage, thanks to its excellent collection of veteran Camellias and ancient Rhododendrons.

e start at The Lost Gardens of Heligan near St Austell. First built during the 12th century, Heligan Manor has been the seat of the Tremayne family since 1569. From the late 18th and into the 19th century the gardens began their development. In 1851, Heligan’s earliest Rhododendrons were secured from British botanist and explorer, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, who collected them during his expedition in India from 1847 to 1851. Hooker’s story is a fascinating one too, making numerous voyages to far-flung regions that included the Antarctic, India, Palestine, Morocco and the Western United States. He was also the closest friend of Charles Darwin, and the 20-year Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (www.kew.org). In the early 1900s the gardens were at their zenith, however in just a few years, they found themselves lost beneath a veil of bramble and ivy after the estate’s workforce left to fight in the irst World War. any of them, sadly, would never return, however their signatures can still be found on the

wall in the Thunderbox Room, an evocative reminder of the catastrophe of war. The rest of the 1900s saw a demise in what had, for centuries, made Heligan great: the house, between 1916 and 1919, was used as a hospital for British rmy O cers, then from 1929 to 1970 it was rented out, with the exception of the Second World War, when it was occupied by merican rmy O cers. ater converted into flats and sold in , it wasn’t until 1990 that the derelict, once great gardens were rediscovered by Tim Smit and Tremayne descendant, John Willis. Since that moment, over the course of the last 29 years, the restoration at Heligan has been tremendous. Visiting now, there are more than 200 acres of garden paradise to discover, perfect for explorers, wildlife and plant lovers; following winding paths that were lain over two centuries ago. Heligan is a garden for all seasons, with so much to explore that we simply don’t have the pages to cover it, guaranteeing visitors a unique experience whatever the time of year. www.heligan.com

| COVER FEATURE Caerhays: the Chinese connection RIGHT BELOW Caerhays Castle and Estate

Until the turn of the 20th century Caerhays Estate had no real garden; the 19th century plant introductions from hunters such as Joseph Rock, Hooker, Abbe Delevay and the Lobb brothers, from China and South America, were largely absent. It was only after 1900 that Caerhays came into its own as a premier British garden, and the first plants of many new species – formerly unknown in Western Europe – can still be seen today more than a century on. The gardens here stem from the work of two great Chinese plant hunters: Ernest Henry Wilson and George Forrest, who risked their lives collecting plant seeds from this most far flung of nations. J.C. Williams, who owned Caerhays, bought his first Chinese hododendrons from xeter s eitch Nursery in , specimens which had been collected by E.H. Wilson. By 1906, more than 50 new species of Rhododendron were being planted and the creation of the garden as we see it today was well underway. Of course, new additions from across the globe were highly coveted and therefore the source of much excitement, but the risks taken by the plant collectors cannot be understated. In Szechwan and Yunnan, disputes were still being resolved with bows and arrows, and the Caerhays website highlights an incident that saw George Forrest narrowly escape a gruesome fate at the hands of indigenous tribesmen.

In 1911, George Forrest began work-proper for J.C. Williams and between 1912 and 1915, he embarked on his third Chinese exhibition, funded entirely by his employer – the equivalent of £400,000 today! As well as Rhododendrons, Forrest’s collections included an array of other plants, including Acer, Magnolia, Michelia and Manglietia, to name but a few; it wasn’t long before thousands of packets of seeds began to arrive at Caerhays, a steady stream that was largely uninterrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. The sheer volume of discoveries made by Wilson and Forrest, even today, is amazing to comprehend, and when you consider how many of their seeds failed to germinate, it’s possible that there are many more still waiting to be discovered. www.caerhays.co.uk

DID YOU KNOW? Open to the public for 100 days from mid-February to early June, the gardens are now closed until next year, so be sure to plan a trip into your 2020 itinerary!

With adventure play areas, children’s trails and a dog-friendly garden, as well as 100-year old Rhododendrons, Magnolias, Camellias and thriving plants usually found in the southern hemisphere, Trebah is a true horticulturalist’s haven.

Trebah Garden: Operation Neptune Trebah dates back to the Domesday Book of 1085, recorded as the property of the Bishop of Exeter. Over the centuries it has changed ownership a number of times, including wealthy Quaker family, the Foxes, who pioneered the garden, as well as world renowned racing driver, Donald Healey CBE, to name just a few. But it’s the integral role that the village of Mawnan Smith and Polgwidden Cove (Trebah beach) played in the staging of Operation Neptune – codename for Operation Overlord: the WWII Normandy landings – that’s really grabbed our attention. We pick up the story in , when American troops had started to arrive in Mawnan Smith. Something big was about to happen and the locals, of course, were ready to play their part. In order to make the village and beach ‘army ready’, the approach to the village, once a single track, was bulldozed and its hedges pushed back, opening up the road. Roadblocks were set up and civilians, without the correct permit, were unable to pass. Services were installed too, like running water and electricity, something that would make a big difference to the villagers after the war. Then the troops began arriving in their droves: convoy after convoy of jeeps and carriers bringing American GIs to what, until then, had been a quiet corner of coastal Cornwall. By June 1944, the 29th Infantry Division had arrived, made up of thousands of recruits from various eastern states in the US, highly trained under the watchful eye of General Charles H. Gerhardt. As is only natural, the village pub – the Red Lion – became a popular haunt for the troops, lifting morale and coming to life with all kinds of new musical styles that the Americans brought over with them.

With dug outs created in the lower part of the garden and a sturdy concrete road constructed down to the beach (across a local farmer’s field , the beach itself was transformed into a naval operations base, providing upper deck access to the huge ships that would land here. No wonder, then, that it accrued the nickname ‘Yankee Beach’! inally, on st ay , after years of intense training and months of guarding the Helford river, the 29th Infantry Division got their orders and began preparations to leave. Embarking towards the shore from their sealed camps (troops were not allowed to leave, minimising the risk of the D-Day preparations being uncovered), they made their way aboard the huge 100-metre long Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs). It all went off without a hitch; vehicles were reversed on in order to drive forward onto Omaha Beach and then, as the troops lined up at their designated sections, they received the order: “29…let’s go!” And go they did. The men of D-Day; the men of the 175th Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division of the US Army fought in what has been described as the ‘greatest show on Earth’, landing on and taking Omaha Beach – one of the deadliest of the five landings. By welcoming the merican GIs, Trebah and Mawnan Smith provided the war effort with one of Operation Overlord’s most important staging points, doing their bit to ensure the success of the largest seaborne invasion the world has ever seen. www.trebahgarden.co.uk

BUILT FOR PURPOSE F We discuss worktops with the team at Tamar Trading – a crucial but often overlooked aspect of any new kitchen or bathroom.

amily run since 1956 and with branches in Bodmin, Holsworthy and Torrington, Tamar Trading Building Supplies is an independent builders’ merchants serving Devon and Cornwall. All three branches boast an extensive, comprehensive stock of building materials and supplies, with a team that boasts years of experience supplying the building trade. It only seems natural, then, that they’ve turned their hands to the provision of kitchens and bathrooms, with showrooms in both their Bodmin and Torrington branches showcasing their extensive ranges. Having edged over this year’s halfway mark, now is the perfect time to consider our kitchens and see what improvements might be made in time for the cooler months, when we spend more time inside enjoying our homes. Choosing the right worktop for your kitchen is essential. It's one of the key practical considerations and will also create a design continuity and flow throughout your kitchen. Tamar Trading have given us their top tips on how to choose the perfect worktop for your needs. There are many different materials that can be used to make kitchen worktops, all with their own range of benefits. The key, then, is

BELOW Fortify your kitchen with functional beauty with a Dekton worktop RIGHT The Tamar Trading team are well versed in helping to realise your dream kitchen

to know what you’re looking for in yours. Do you want it to be heat and/or scratch resistant, or would you be prepared to overlook some practicalities for aesthetics? Added to this, the material you choose can impact on the installation time, which will ultimately affect the cost of your kitchen. It’s also worthwhile, according to the Tamar Trading team, considering more than one worktop material within your kitchen. This can help keep costs down and will add interest to your kitchen design too. Different materials work best in different areas of the kitchen. For example, wood will add warmth to the style but is not

scratch or heat resistant, making it more suited to a breakfast bar area. Silestone quartz worktops, on the other hand, are very tough, virtually non-porous and highly resistant to scratches, stains, heat damage and impact, making them ideal for high-tra c ones of the kitchen such as sink, oven and hob areas. Alternatively, if you’re looking for the benefits of both, why not consider the Dekton range? Dekton is a composite worktop produced using an exclusive Sinterized Particle Technology. This high-tech process represents an accelerated version of the metamorphic change that natural stone undergoes when subjected to high temperatures and pressure over thousands of years. Being highly resistant to heat and scratching, Dekton can also be designed to mimic natural wood or natural stone such as granite and marble, meaning you can have the best of both worlds! Sally Millergill, one of Tamar Trading’s Kitchen and Bathroom Designers at the company’s Bodmin branch, tells us: “The main advantage of Dekton above any other surface is its incredible resistance to heat, making it the perfect surface around hobs and next to the oven.”

Dekton combines the qualities expected by the chef in all of us, it’s a clean surface that is nice to touch, and resistant to the daily grind that takes place in a kitchen over years of use. It’s an ultra-sophisticated material for busy everyday life, capable of creating spaces that make the day-to-day preparation of food easy, as well as being visually stunning – perfect for instilling envy in your dinner guests! As it is available in a huge range of sizes installation is usually simple, with larger si es leading to a more seamless finish and, therefore, a more hygienic work surface. What’s more, they’re ideal for use in the bathroom, being waterproof, stain resistant and non-porous. They can be used to waterproof the walls and floor, in place of tiling, creating a harmonious, hygienic and stylish room that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

BELOW Be sure your new worktops are up to the task at hand!

TIDY BED,

d n i m tidy

In September this year parents will have the best excuse to nag messy teenagers, on National Make Your Bed Day!

N

ational Make Your Bed Day, on 11th September, is ideal for encouraging everyone to make their bed, from the early bird who leaves the house at dawn, to the slovenly teenager for whom making the bed seems a daily challenge. According to sleep experts, a perfectly made bed tidies the bedroom, tidies the mind and helps you sleep better. For The Cornish Bed Company, every day is Make Your Bed Day, because the team make the finest metal beds using traditional hand casting techniques, all year round. Located in a 19th century railway depot – formerly used for the transportation of mining minerals – The Cornish Bed Company in Par is steeped in all things Victorian, from the building in which it operates, to the techniques the team use to manufacture their gorgeous beds. The foundry is one of the last in the county to hand-forge metal beds, and it is about as far from the production line as you can get. Cornish Beds are built to last a lifetime and are instantly recognisable for their unique

knuckle fixings, providing them with an industrial, engineered design and durability that sets them apart from their cheaper, mass produced counterparts. ach design comes with a certificate of authenticity and an individual hallmark, making it an antique of the future – an heirloom to be passed to future generations. So, whether you’re shopping for a day bed, a timeless classic for a country home, or a luxurious four poster, there will be a Cornish Bed that is perfect for your home. Made to measure and available in a wide range of finishes, including brass and nickel with a statement as bold as a Cornish Bed, make it a masterpiece by keeping it tidy on National Make Your Bed Day. A number of prestigious Cornish businesses have recognised the unrivalled quality of a Cornish Bed Company bed, including Paul Ainsworth's Padstow Townhouse, self-catering provider Retreat to Fowey, and interior designer Dynargh Design. As Fiona Randall, owner of Retreat to Fowey puts it: “These beds

add a distinctive style to each apartment, and a wow factor appreciated by all the guests that stay with us.” Fiona continues: “The Cornish Bed Company is way ahead in terms of quality. Each bed has its own unique story and is made by local artisans in the heart of Cornwall.”

ENERGISING THE DUCHY GreenGenUK’s mission is to provide Cornish homeowners with an even playing field for their heating and power provision.

O

perating from their o ces in elston, reen en specialise in the implementation of renewable technologies. Offering a wide range of solutions, they aim to provide homes in Cornwall with parity on their energy bills by designing and installing environmentally and financially beneficial heating and power solutions. stablished as one of Cornwall’s leaders in the renewable market, we sit down with anaging Director and founder of reen en , ob Carey, to learn more about the benefits of renewable energy in Cornish homes. reen en was started to provide homes and businesses in Cornwall with an alternative to their traditional energy problems, ob explains. Outside of the main towns, there’s no mains gas, which means homeowners are sub ect to higher heating and electricity bills. Why should this be the case? ob continues to explain how his company tackles the problem. reen en tackles each property individually by trying to get to the bottom of a customer’s usage and expenditure. Then, we use our knowledge of a variety of renewable technologies to propose solutions that have the biggest financial and environmental benefit.

This could mean replacing an oil or P boiler with an air source heat pump. Or it could mean installing solar P to offset your electricity costs, ob tells us. “There’s no one-si e-fits-all solution, and a little more work our end often means better results for our customers. With a passion and drive for renewables, reen en feels like a logical stop for any Cornish homeowners looking to modernise their heating and power supply. With a friendly and informative approach, why not contact reen en to see how they can help you?

made fair

We catch up with the team at Cornish independent ethical retailer, Uneeka, and learn what’s in store for the summer season.

F

ounded by Jodi Skelton in 2004, Uneeka began in a small space in the cosy setting of Lemon Street market in Truro, however since then, this superb home and lifestyle brand has grown into two stores – a home furniture shop on City Road, and a lifestyle store and café on Boscawen Street. Uneeka Home sells unique furniture, lighting, sofas, rugs, cushions, home accessories, gifts and much more, all products being ethically sourced and, often, one-off or limited edition!

Across both their stores, the team have built strong relationships with their suppliers, with a deep understanding of where their products come from, what materials they use and whether or not they are eco-friendly, fair trade, palm-oil free, plastic free and sustainable. “This is how we’ve secured such a great stock for our home store summer sale,” explains Manager, Jess Preen. “The majority of our summer sale pieces are one-offs, but at half the usual price for the same quality

pieces. As well as our indoor range, we have some incredible deals on outdoor furniture too, including some pieces that are perfect for making the most of the wonderful weather we’ve been having!” What’s more, having recently attended the Manchester furniture show, the team are pleased to say that the showroom is bursting at the seams with amazing new stock. So what’s on trend this season? Well, according to Emily Taylor, who works alongside Jess, “luxurious velvet, gold accents, house plants and floral ungle detailing” are very much in vogue. She continues We have a fantastic new floral mural on the outside of our homestore, painted by our fabulous in-house illustrators. This gives the store a fresh, eye-catching summer look,” one that seems to have people smiling as they drive past! “We’ve also been painting and decorating the lifestyle shop with floral themes and are always updating our window display.” The lifestyle store really is an emporium of inspiration, with stained woods giving it a fresh look and more plants and greenery reinforcing the floral trend that’s so popular at the moment. There’s new stock arriving weekly at the moment as well, “and we have a sale in August in time for kids going back to school,” explains Jess. Perhaps you’re in search of the perfect piece of jewellery, be it as a gift or a treat unto yourself. Jess tells us: “Sterling silver

jewellery is still a favourite and one of our best jewellery suppliers has just added some brass touches, which are selling really well!” Home to a wide range of exciting ethical products, from gorgeous handbags, the aforementioned jewellery and gifts, to cushions, throws and home furnishings, this superb independent business has built a reputation among its customers for the personal touch found in everything they sell. With inspirational designers in the south west, the Uneeka team strive to source locally before looking further afield, proudly supporting the local community. Offering an alternative to the impersonal ranges found on large online stores, Uneeka is delighted to promote a lifestyle made fair, so whether you’re furnishing your home, accessorising your wardrobe for summer or searching for the perfect gift, a trip to one of Uneeka’s Truro stores comes highly recommended!

OUTDOOR LIFESTYLE Make the most of your time in the garden with Holdcroft Lighting’s selection of outdoor lighting.

F

inally summer is here and it’s possible to spend more time outside even after the sun descends. And when you’re enjoying dinner outdoors as a family, hosting a barbeque or even throwing a garden party, it’s well worth having outdoor lighting so you can continue to make the most of the fresh air while the stars emerge. Holdcroft Lighting has a brilliant selection, allowing you to bring the festival home with festoon lighting so you can create a great atmosphere in the garden. Festoon lighting is perfect for garden parties or just to create a colourful ambiance. Not to mention the fact that Holdcroft can create bespoke festoon lighting, so you can choose your favourite flex, fittings and bulbs. Lighting Artist Lauren gives us her advice on outdoor lighting this summer: “Being on the coast you need to consider what lighting is suitable in the salty air. We sell various styles that are best for coastal living. Take our resin range of stylish wall lights for example, perfect for use with homes by the sea.” From wall lights to decking lighting there’s something that will suit all requirements. It’s possible to make your outside living space glow with a warm ambiance throughout the

evening, and when we have the chance to spend more time in our gardens, its not an opportunity to pass up! It’s not just the convenience of outdoor lighting for socialising that’s important, though: outdoor lighting is also important for safety reasons, lighting your path to the door, for example, or having security floodlights installed is equally as important as creating a light and welcoming outdoor environment. If you have stairs on your decking, the Holdcroft team highly recommend installing decking lights to avoid tripping when it’s dark. The expert team is always on hand to help advise on any lighting options and if you want to have a look at the lighting in person, simply head to the Holdcroft lighting store where you can peruse the designs and talk to one of the experienced team members about what will work best for you and your home.

OLDEST SHOP

IN TOWN!

For 100 years now, Glanvilles has been part of the fabric and landscape of the historic town of Wadebridge.

A

saddler by trade, Ernest Glanville Senior, returning home from the Great War full of hope for the future, began visiting local farms to mend harnesses, taking selected ironmongery and household goods with him. This fledgling business grew and, in the 1930s three cottages in Polmorla Road were purchased and Glanville & Sons was born. Today’s customer base is far wider with people travelling from both ends of the country and seasonal visitors seeing the ‘Glanville experience’ as part of their family’s annual tradition. “Today’s Glanvilles bears little resemblance to those early days, apart from our continued belief in customer service and quality,” explains Glanvilles’ Marketing Assistant, Liz de Selincourt. “Rosie has taken over the reins from her parents, Charles and Brigitte Glanville, to develop a much-respected cookware and housewares shop downstairs specialising in premium brands for amateur cooks and professionals alike.” Meanwhile upstairs, Guy de Selincourt has established one of the most comprehensive lighting departments in the south west. “Glanvilles Lighting stands for quality and an eye for design. We have plenty of choice, both in our showroom and in stock, whether you’re looking for a vintage, industrial, modern contemporary or nautical look,” Guy tells us.

“As we look to the future," explains Rosie Hamm, “and see increasing numbers of customers embracing the sea-change in thinking about the environment – to address waste, pollution and the use of chemicals – we buy from British manufacturers (whenever possible), offering products that last and those made from ethically produced, natural or recycled materials. We source products from companies making positive environmental contributions, like tree planting and ocean clean-up schemes, so that we can help meet this demand.” Why not see Glanvilles’ extensive range of housewares and lighting for yourself? Or join them for the Centenary celebrations taking place on the first two Saturdays in September? There will be over £1,000 of vouchers (courtesy of Kitchencraft) and other prizes on offer! DIFFERENCE Discover the benefits of replacing tired windows or installing a new conservatory with help from the experts at Windmill Windows.

E

stablished in 1996 by brothers David and John, family run Windmill Windows has built a reputation for quality and value. Discussing the various benefits of installing new windows or a conservatory, David explains: “Installing a quality conservatory is one of the best home improvements that you can make. It not only transforms your living space into an open, seamless environment, it also adds value to your home and makes it easier to sell when the time comes.” Open 8.30am until 4.30pm Monday to Friday, as well as on Saturday mornings by appointment, by popping into the Windmill Windows showroom you can get a real idea of what’s available and see the different materials and finishes in person, because when it comes to home improvements, seeing the products first-hand is a must. Plus, the experienced team are on hand to explain the various benefits of the different materials and finishes available, so you can make an educated decision. We ask John for his advice on updating your windows. “One thing that can make a massive difference both in terms of heat e ciency and overall look is to replace your windows. Feeling a draught is probably the most obvious warning sign as well as windows rattling when the wind picks up,”

MAIN Flood your home with natural light INSET Visit the Windmill Windows showroom for inspiration and expert advice

explains John. “Also,” he continues, “if you have wooden frames, when they begin to show signs of aging is probably the time to renew them and perhaps go for a more durable material like uPVC for the future so they last longer.” Windmill Windows feature an extensive range of windows including uPVC, vertical sliders, Heritage Flush Sash windows, Modus Windows, Ultimate Windows and Rustique Windows, each providing a different look for your home. Whether you want to invest in a new conservatory, update your windows, or even install a new door, you really will be surprised by the difference these changes make to your home. The Windmill Windows team are always there to help advise from start to finish, without pushing you into making any decisions. But don’t just take our word for it: simply head to the Windmill Windows website and check out the wealth of glowing reviews for yourself!

experience DEFINING AN

MAIN Each Charteroak site is chosen for its appealing locale BELOW Do you think the Charteroak Experience could be for you?

A

We catch up with luxury lodge developers, Charteroak, and ask them to define the ‘Charteroak Experience’.

s a developer of high-quality holiday lodge developments, Charteroak recognise that they provide an exclusive proposition in the marketplace very different to those sites offering lots of shared amenities like swimming pools and tennis courts. Instead the focus for Charteroak has always been to create their own unique experience with an emphasis on three principal elements, which they believe are important to their customers. First of all the sites themselves are chosen for their appealing location, in areas where people would like to have a second home, but more importantly for the actual physical environment of the site itself, whether that embraces wonderful views, proximity to water or complete seclusion. Allied to this is the way the schemes are developed with an emphasis on well-conceived native planting and the introduction of streams and bodies of water to provide the best micro location and aspect for each lodge.

Charteroak are also a developer for whom quality prevails over quantity, priding themselves on creating developments with a much lower site density than many other locations. This means a Charteroak lodge provides greater privacy and outside space for you and your guests to enjoy. The final but all-important third point is the focus placed on the lodges themselves. By nature Charteroak have always been keen to push the boundaries of lodge development, seeking to positively innovate and enhance the product they offer. Lodges have been around for some time now but by looking to innovate, Charteroak want to create more forward thinking lodge designs, anticipating and then providing what the customers of today expect, plus one or two added features they might not! This is best illustrated by the indulgent luxury of the iSpa™ with its integral spa facilities and private cinema room, or the Sky Terrace, with its elevated deck making so much more of the panoramic views of the Cornish countryside.

Charteroak’s Sales Director, Sam Weller, tells us: “We work with great partners, be they contactors, landscape consultants, architects or lodge manufacturers; they are all vital ingredients in helping to deliver the Charteroak Experience. We are extremely grateful for their continued support and the important contribution they make to what we deliver.” The result of all of the above is a holiday home that provides a significant sense of space, an environment your lodge feels a part of and a home designed for you and with amenities just for you. That is the Charteroak Experience.

STYLE

Achieve the classic Cream Cornwall look in your home.

ABOVE An illustration of the classic Cream Cornwall look RIGHT Designed with Cornwall's coast in mind

W

hat is the classic Cream Cornwall coastal style, I hear you ask. Well, the look is sophisticated – marrying crisp linens, perfectly painted tongue and groove, bold stripes and a distinct palette of whites, neutrals, blues, charcoal and black. Utilising beautiful accessories such as specimen shells, coral, maritime instruments and coastal art with the aim of creating a clean, elegant feel. You don’t have to live by the sea to achieve a coastal feel for your home. Just by putting a few tips into practice you’ll feel like you’ve got the ocean at your doorstep. When it comes to choosing paints, don’t be afraid of using dark blue; the signature Cream Cornwall blue, Star Gazey, works perfectly in a small space as long as you keep the ceiling and woodwork white. Be brave, it will look fantastic! There are loads of options for different types of furniture to tie together your interior design and one that owner Rebecca Heane suggests is to make the most of an ottoman, providing a useful piece of extra seating for visitors and also working as a base for a lovely display of shells and coral. When it comes to style, often the finer details can make all the difference.

Cream Cornwall has a great selection of exclusive lampshades, which are perfect for the coastal look and create a real focal point for any room. Mix these with tailored stripes and washed linens for a classic feel. Whether you prefer Roman blinds or curtains, your windows are sure to look smart with a mitred border to add definition. Choose a contrast colour for the borders to add extra design interest. When deciding on what to put on your walls, make sure to check out Cream Cornwall’s extensive range of beautiful mirrors including the unique shell mirrors, or for something a little different why not hang blue and white bone china plates as statement pieces? If you’re interested in creating a coastal feel at home then feel free to contact the team for a free interiors consultation in the Falmouth store. They’ll be more than happy to talk you through the various options.

Escape the bustle of an increasingly busy world with a break at Millendreath Beach Resort

M

illendreath Beach Resort: the new, old name for the beautiful holiday resort that sits directly on Millendreath beach near Looe, previously named Black Rock Beach Resort after the famous mark that sits proudly out to sea. The site has been undergoing a subtle rebrand for the last two years, with a new team, a brand-new logo, a new website and now, a new name! As Millendreath is the only one of its name in the UK, the team were keen to show off their uniqueness and put themselves firmly on the map long with the change of title, Millendreath’s new logo revolves around the British seahorse. Why? Well, the coastline here is one of only a few places in the UK that’s home to one of Britain’s only two species of seahorse. These majestic creatures thrive in exceptionally clean waters where there is plenty of seagrass to eat, which speaks volumes of the water quality at this superb beach resort. Millendreath is open all year and is a hub of excitement in the summer months. With live music on the beachfront and events all year round, the busy Bistro on the Beach sits right on the edge of the sand, serving delicious breakfasts, lunches and, on some evenings, dinner. You can also grab fresh coffee, homemade cakes and scrumptious

cream teas. There’s also the Beach Bar, with its large wraparound deck and stunning views of the whole bay, serving Cornish lagers, ales and ciders on draught, alongside tempting handcrafted cocktails and bottled drinks. If you’re looking for your perfect holiday on the beach then look no further than Millendreath’s beautifully refurbished Hillside Apartments. All situated just moments from the beach with amazing views of either the sea or valley, these are perfect for families hoping to enjoy the outdoors. There’s even dog-friendly accommodation available, so your furry friends needn’t miss out on the adventure! With a private south-facing beach, 65 acres of private woodland and the South West Coast Path running through the resort, Millendreath is a wonderful spot to get away from it all – the perfect base for exploring the best that Cornwall has to offer.

Holiday HAVEN

Introducing Castaway Cottage, a gorgeous beachside retreat from the Forever Cornwall portfolio.

F

orever Cornwall are thrilled to introduce Castaway Cottage to their portfolio. This newly renovated retreat nestles on the edge of three miles of sand dunes and nature reserve that stretch from Godrevy and Gwithian all the way to Hayle. This stylish holiday home sleeps eight and offers the perfect escape for surfing and outdoor pursuits, with large secluded gardens and generous, laid-back indoor living space, which is also dog friendly. The property offers a unique alternative to Forever Cornwall’s Gwithian Towans chalets. It’s at pton Towans, a little further south along the bay and is perfect if you’re looking for more space. You will feel as if you’ve discovered your own special corner of withian, with private access to the sand dunes. A twenty minute stroll through the towans leads to the huge beach at pton Towans, which is lifeguarded ay to September and is 100% dog friendly all year round!

Castaway Cottage is a little different to most in the area. It’s a stylish beach house, newly renovated to an exceptional standard and has everything you need for a Cornish getaway – from the smart TV and en-suite master bedroom, to the rope swing and hidden path out onto the golden dunes and beyond to the beach. Whether you’re visiting as a group of friends looking to take advantage of Gwithian’s famed surf breaks, a family group wanting plenty of space to relax and explore, or simply a couple desperate to tire out the dogs, watch the waves and switch off for a while, as beachside retreats go, Castaway Cottage is something of a coastal haven.

A CORNISH ESCAPE Introducing Cornwall Hideaways, a new holiday letting agency based in Polzeath.

MAIN One example of the many stunning views you can expect

C

ornwall Hideaways opened its doors at Trebetherick House near Polzeath earlier this year. As a sister company to well-established holiday lettings businesses, Rural Retreats and Norfolk Hideaways, Cornwall Hideaways is well equipped to ensure you enjoy the perfect holiday. Every property is managed and looked after by a dedicated team with a wealth of local knowledge, so you can get all the help you need throughout the entire process, from the planning, to the holiday itself. At the time of launch, Cornwall Hideaways had a portfolio of 40 marketed properties, offering the best possible choice of holiday homes in Cornwall, including secluded cottages, luxury coastal hideaways and even lighthouse keepers' cottages! So, whether you’re after a cosy bolthole for a romantic weekend away, or a larger property that can fit the whole family, you’re sure to find it. The agency aims to not just provide holiday breaks, but also to promote properties throughout Cornwall, offering owners a service that ranges from marketing only, to a fixed rate, fully-managed service. This can include changeovers, laundry, recruitment and training of housekeepers, plus an out-ofhours emergency helpline.

James Boyce, director of the Hideaways Group, tells us: “The success of Norfolk Hideaways has inspired us to create a similar business in Cornwall. It’s a hugely diverse county offering something for everyone, whether you’re a couple looking for a weekend escape, or a family looking for a bucket and spade summer holiday. Many of the properties are dog friendly, suitable for young children and perfectly located for a range of activities such as sailing, cycling, surfing, bird watching or walking. Now with 70 properties from Tintagel to Fowey to Penzance, Cornwall Hideaways aims to have over 100 properties in its portfolio in time for the 2020 season. With a wide range of benefits, including no sign-up fee, a local team to guide you through the lettings process, unlimited owner weeks and free professional photography – let Cornwall Hideaways help you maximise your home's potential.

Maximise

YOUR BOOKINGS We find out how best to market your holiday home from the List Assisters team.

A

t the first Short Stay Show at ondon’s xcel earlier this year, the ist ssisters team learned from fellow industry professionals that over two thirds of all private accommodation bookings globally are made either via irbnb, Booking.com or xpedia ome way . This means that if you’re not listing with the online travel agency OT mega-brands, you could seriously be missing out on bookings. gents know this too and many of them use OT s as well as their own websites to market their clients’ portfolio of properties. But there are a few downsides to having your lettings agent market your property via OT s. irstly, agents’ fees are in the region of to plus T of your rental income, whereas irbnb and ome way’s listing fees are between and . Secondly, all of the hard work that goes into generating fabulous five star reviews the gorgeous facilities you provide, the immaculate housekeeping and excellent guest experience all of these end up as reviews for the agent and not you ist ssisters’ Clare utt says By all means work with a letting agent, especially one that’s an expert on your location or your type of property, but do also employ an online strategy. It’s super easy to get your property listed yourself on any of the OT s. The more

the merrier frankly, since each OT has its own loyal customer base. ist ssisters’ recommendation when it comes to renewing your agency contract would be to seriously consider a DI option to your OT listings and combine that with working with your letting agent to spread your marketing efforts as widely as possible, for the best return. Obviously taking a DI approach to some of this work might not be for everyone, due to a lack of time or know-how, and that’s where ist ssisters can help. The team offer fixed price packages to get your OT listing s up and running and after that if you’d like help with tasks such as handling your direct bookings, communicating with guests, taking care of arrivals departures and coordinating with your cleaners can all be done on an as-needed basis. So when your lettings contract comes up for review, why not give the lovely team at ist ssisters a call to discuss your options?

Serving coffee by day, Rebellion transforms into a restaurant and bar by night, bringing heady flavour combinations that will leave you feeling full and completely satisfied. The restaurant is filled with wooden tables creating a relaxed atmosphere.

Catering to grown-ups and little rebels alike, Rebellion provides mouth watering meals with an innovative use of flavour. ere at Cornwall Living we like the sound of the slow roasted brisket served with onion rings and a horseradish and sour cream sauce. As well as creating an incredible menu with an exceptional twist of flavours, ebellion also serves award-winning cocktails such as the Moonshine Mary or, for those with a sweet tooth, the Salted Caramel Espresso Martini. Seal life

A

It’s been another busy season at The Cornish Seal Sanctuary with over 70 seal pup rescues.

lthough the seal pupping season is from September until March – the period of time in the UK where we receive the most storms and rough seas – this is nonetheless a busy time of year for the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, being peak season for visitors as well as the Animal Care Team’s ongoing care of the sanctuary’s permanent residents. A pup will need to come to the sanctuary for a variety of reasons, from malnourishment, being separated from its mother too early, or for more sinister reasons – such as life threatening wounds from being entangled in marine litter. This season, the sanctuary has had four pups come into their care as a result of plastic pollution in our oceans. One pup, named after Queen legend Brian ay, was rescued at five weeks old by British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), due to severe malnourishment and superficial wounds. The seriousness of his condition came to light during his first week recovering at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. He spent the majority of his

time sleeping, and when it came to feeding times he had trouble swallowing fish and the team had to gently force feed him fish in order for him to eat. It came as a great shock when Brian May passed two pieces of plastic bag, totalling 8cm in diameter. The sanctuary are aware that rubbish in the ocean affects seals – previous research conducted at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary indicated that seals ingest plastic via fish. Seals in Cornwall are also heavily affected by plastic pollution and entanglement. Volunteer surveys conducted by Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust around the south west of ngland identified different entangled seals in alone. owever, Brian ay is the first example the sanctuary has seen of a seal directly ingesting a plastic bag. Thankfully, after going through rehabilitation, Brian May was successfully released back into the wild after making a full recovery. The sanctuary rely heavily on members of the public getting in touch if they discover a seal pup on the beach, and without this vital help the team would

not be able to do their pup rehabilitation work every year. This year, the sanctuary launched their brand new Beach Signage around local beaches in Cornwall. The signage was made in collaboration with several charities and organisations as a guide for the public when out and about on the beaches; what to do if they come across a seal, who to call, and some tips on how to protect local wildlife and look after our beaches. This signage is supplied and maintained by the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, and if any local beaches would like a sign they simply need to call the sanctuary who will organise the rest! As all of this season’s rescued pups have been released into the wild, the sanctuary are launching their brand new Virtual eality experience this summer. uests can take a journey from rescue to release with the rescued seal pups, getting closer to pups than the animal care team do, all through the medium of virtual reality. The Virtual eality experience was made possible by Rose Summers, a visual communicator, using virtual reality, photography

and video to tell stories that highlight conservation and the natural world. ‘ escue to elease irtual Tour’ was part of ose’s final year pro ect for her Marine & Natural History Photography degree at Falmouth University. She worked with The Cornish Seal Sanctuary and local seal conservation and research groups to produce a virtual reality experience that takes audience’s to the centre of the action. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary also provides a permanent home to animals that need special care from their team of marine animal experts. When visiting the sanctuary, you can experience wonderful marine animals up close and learn all about their individual stories.

ruro and Penwith College University Centre is celebrating a year of great successes. Achieving the highest rates of overall student satisfaction in Devon and Cornwall with over 90% for the second year in a row, it also received confirmation that it is now the sole Cornish member of the South West Institute of Technology (IoT). It also received approval of dSc Cyber Security, the first course to be opened under the IoT, and is recruiting for September . dditionally, dSc Computing Technologies and BA (Hons) Business, Enterprise and Leadership students achieved success rate. The College is also celebrating years of delivering university level Psychology. ature students make up half of the student body enrolled in Truro and Penwith’s university level courses, some having enrolled directly onto a course, others progressing from an Access to HE course. The college understands the responsibilities and time constraints that adult life can bring, which is why the timetable for the year is condensed into two full days per week, allowing for plenty of free time for independent study, part-time employment and family commitments.

s s e n l u f d Min MATTERS D r Morwenna Opie is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, formerly practising in Harley Street and recently returning to her native Cornwall, now with practising rights at Duchy Hospital. Dr Opie works with all manner of health di culties, including mood, anxiety, trauma and OCD, with a particular passion for supporting patients struggling with physical health challenges. We catch up with her to ask about her experience working in this field.

We hear from Dr Morwenna Opie at Duchy Hospital about the importance of meditation and mindfulness.

Do physical health issues affect mental health? “Yes, absolutely. The strange thing is we see it as common sense that people will struggle emotionally when unwell, suffering, and unable to do the things they usually do to feel good. We also intuitively understand that being burnt-out makes us more susceptible to being unwell, and that we can internalise stress. However we sometimes forget all this in highly-specialised medicine, or in times of crisis.”

01/08/2019 17:38

| LIFESTYLE Morwenna continues: “Luckily, I am part of a very forward-thinking team at Duchy Hospital, who are highly attuned to their patients’ well being and recognise optimising mental health can positively affect outcomes. We know our mental health affects our blood pressure, our immune systems and even how our genes are expressed. It is such a privilege to collaborate with my highly skilled colleagues at Duchy, and also to collaborate with patients. Together we can support lifestyle changes, helping people to feel more in control of managing their health, their life direction, and to live a fulfilled and joyful life.” So what are Dr orwenna Opie’s top five tips for looking after your mental health? “I enjoy finding easy ‘life-hacks’ to suit an individual’s skills and interests, including: mindfulness meditation practise or yoga exercise and other healthy lifestyle changes; getting better at noticing and responding to our needs; getting outside and interacting with people; working our core values and passions, and living by them.” We’ve heard a lot about mindfulness. Can you tell us more? “My take-home message would be to give mindfulness a go,” Morwenna tells us. “Essentially, mindfulness means being aware in the present moment, with acceptance. Meditation is one form of mindfulness and it’s something I love and try to practise even if it’s just for a few minutes every day. It is like the gym for the mind, to help you be flexible and resilient emotionally. It helps tone up the nerves which help us get calm and optimise healing and health. Do not be put off if you don’t like the first type of meditation you try, there will be a technique that suits you, and there is honestly no such thing as being ‘bad’ at meditation!” What could somebody expect from a session with you? “ y main priority in a first session is getting to know you well enough, as an individual, to put you at ease, and understand you well enough to ensure you feel hopeful, heard, understood and in the right place. I aim by the end of the first session to have identified your goals and agreed together on what type of therapy will suit you best.”

Finally, how are you enjoying being home? “The pull to come home was personally very strong. I was so keen for my children to grow up free-range, barefoot and grounded! And, I genuinely feel so fortunate to have worked and trained with exceptional practitioners from around the world, and wanted to bring that back to benefit my county “Having been away for 20 years,” Dr Opie continues, “I had actually underestimated how therapeutic and restorative this part of the world can be, with a healthier pace, the benefits of raw nature and the sea. “There are a wealth of inspirational practitioners and projects to connect with here. I admit freely to feeling healthier myself, and able to practise what I preach! In its widespread recognition of importance of caring for mind, body and planet, the Cornwall I have returned to is a progressively openminded place to live and work (including an expanding service led by an inspirational and committed NHS health psychology workforce), and it has great coffee and cafés to travel for these days, too!” Morwenna enjoys having patients from London and overseas come and stay for a week or more, to explore Cornwall and benefit from transformational intensive therapy as part of a wellness retreat package. A more common format for locals is a series of six to eight weekly sessions at Duchy hospital, working towards positive changes that last.

How is Cornwall Hospice Care navigating a rapidly changing healthcare landscape?

T

hese are challenging times for charity and for healthcare charities in particular. Cornwall’s hospices face the mounting costs of regulatory compliance against an ongoing backdrop of poor government funding. It’s issues such as these that led to Paul Brinsley, Chief Executive of Cornwall Hospice Care, meeting with Caroline Deneage, Minister of State for Care. “This was an important step for our charity as we work to highlight the hidden issues that we struggle with on a daily basis,” explains Paul. “It’s important we are heard locally and nationally and the meeting with the Minister, organised by local MP Derek Thomas, gave us an opportunity to highlight the burden of regulation for a small care provider that simply doesn’t have access to the resources of an acute NHS trust.” A rapidly changing healthcare landscape is also bringing its challenges to Cornwall Hospice Care, but as David Renwick, volunteer Chair of Trustees explains, future proofing is about meeting the needs of the patients. “It’s our privilege to run both Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices, delivering not only our familiar in-patient services, but also expanding our important work into the community, effectively bringing the hospices

closer to people in Cornwall. We recognise that patients’ needs are evolving and so must we. Our commitment is to ensuring that people can access the care that is appropriate to them in their place of choice and this we aim to do in collaboration with NHS colleagues and other healthcare providers.” For Paul Brinsley, it’s also about wise investment of money that, in the main, is donated to the charity by its much appreciated supporters. He explains: “Specialist and intensive healthcare doesn’t come cheap, but we offer our patients, their families and carers the best and we provide it free of charge. Recruitment of staff has been a challenge right across the healthcare sector, but here at Cornwall Hospice Care we are proud to be ‘one team’, delivering our vision of high-quality care for all people living with terminal illness in Cornwall. Over the past 12 months we have invested in our existing staff and recruited more, equally outstanding people to help us develop."
