MEASURES The ocean is so much more than a source of inspiration for artist, Mark Richards.
T
here is no doubt that Mark Richards loves the ocean. Yet, he was born as far from it as you can get in England! As a teenager growing up in the idlands, he saw surfing for the first time on a rainy Saturday afternoon TV sport show; the 1977 Pipeline Masters! In a moment of absolute clarity, he committed right then and there to a life involved in surfing and the ocean. He moved to Cornwall in 1985 after completing his engineering degree. He has surfed all over Cornwall and around the world since then. Mark now lives on the cliff overlooking the sea in Perranporth – a source of constant inspiration as well as a great place to surf. In recent years he’s rekindled his passion for open-water swimming, and not being one to do things by half, completed his swim around the entire coast of Cornwall in 2018. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, in 2019 he became the first man to swim from ornwall to the Isles of Scilly! urfing and swimming give ark a close-up and personal perspective on not only waves, but seabed features, cliffs, remote stretches of coastline and islands. His art and furniture are inspired by all of these elements. His mixed-media work uses beautiful hardwoods (from sustainable sources) and epoxy resin to evoke the beauty and feeling of the ocean. any of his pieces are based on specific locations such as the Isles of Scilly, Cornish beaches and surf spots. Much of Mark’s work is made to commission; he loves to make bespoke coffee tables and wall art to evoke coastal locations that are special to his customers.
