Heligan

T

he Lost Gardens of Heligan were rediscovered from the brambles of time by Tim Smit and John Willis, who were the catalysts for a 30-year project that continues to this day. Heligan remains one of the most loved and romantic gardens in the UK, appreciated as much for its beauty and mystery as for the groundbreaking restoration project.

Wildlife legend Steve Backshall will be taking up residence at The Lost Gardens of Heligan this summer for Wild Heligan, a celebration of the incredible wildlife and plants that surround us.

Steve Backshall’s Wild Heligan will see Steve take to the Heligan Play Meadow stage on selected days during the event (which takes place from July 18th to

September 2nd) alongside an incredible selection of other celebrity nature experts. From August 24th, Steve will hand the reins to TV presenter and explainer extraordinaire Maddie Moate who will share her passion for pollinators as she brings a fun and engaging live show about her beekeeping adventures to the Heligan audience.

During the Wild Heligan season, visitors will be able to submit video and images of the wildlife they’ve spotted during their visit. Steve will show the best on stage alongside footage from his extensive adventure archive, illustrating that domestic wildlife is just as exciting as its more exotic equivalent.

he stillness that settles over a harbour town in the early morning is as if it’s holding its breath before the day begins in earnest.

Falmouth at this hour is all cool salt air and soft light, King Charles Quay quiet save for the cry of gulls and the gentle ‘tink’ of halyards in the breeze.

Above me, there’s a break in the weather as blue skies are peppered with cotton-wool clouds. Somewhere behind me, the town is preparing itself, the clatter of dray deliveries to The Chain Locker, the first espresso machines firing up along the waterfront. I turn my back on it all and walk to the water’s edge.

First mate Hollie is waiting and greets me with the warm, capable confidence of someone entirely at home at sea. I’m about to embark on a day sail aboard Sailing Yacht Silvio. Having cut my journalistic teeth on a traditional boat magazine, I’m excited at a return to the heady days of classic lines and teak deck boards.

Hollie helps us into the tender and hands us our waterproofs; wise counsel, as it turns out, for even on the calmest of mornings, the harbour has its own ideas about spray. We motor out through the inner harbour, past the working boats and the pretty yachts, and there she is – Silvio.

She sits on the water as though she owns it, which in the most romantic sense she rather does.

Commissioned in 1957 by the Hon. Robert Boscawen MC MP and designed by the distinguished naval architect Robert Clark, she is a 1958 classic sloop: steel-hulled and elegantly proportioned, she combines what her heritage rightly calls the two effortless British qualities of elegance and strength. By the late 1950s, Boscawen was already an accomplished sailor, and Silvio was built with clear offshore ambition. He raced her in the Fastnet in 1959 and again in 1961. In the latter, where just finishing was worth a prize, Silvio came in a creditable 7th in Class II. With a pedigree as thoroughbred as the 1860s racehorse she is named

after, Clark himself is said to have declared: “She will always be the most beautiful boat in the harbour.”

Sixty-seven years on, it is difficult to argue with him.

We climb aboard and I’m welcomed by Captain Joel Edward. His background is in captaining tall ships, most notably Phoenix of Hornblower and Poldark fame, a complex and demanding vessel requiring seamanship of the highest order. As we make ready, Joel runs Silvio with a gentle authority, every movement considered and every instruction clear. No wonder, as at 46ft and 14 tonnes Silvio requires a certain level of respect. Hollie, who has recently completed a degree

in marine biology alongside her tall ships experience, moves about the deck with the same easy efficiency, and within moments, the mooring lines are cast off and Silvio begins to breathe.

We leave the mooring under sail, no mean feat for a yacht of this size and stature and with the jib up out of the harbour mouth into the Carrick Roads, the magnificent stretch of deep-water channel where the Fal meets the sea, the green hills of the Roseland slipping past on one side, Pendennis Castle rising on the other, sentinel and witness, as it has been for centuries. As the wind finds the canvas Silvio, true to her nature, true to her name, surges forward with a powerful presence, a testament to her pedigree. As we round the headland with Pendennis in our wake, the analogy is entirely apt. She breaks from the mouth of the Carrick Roads like a horse from a starting gate, that deep, mighty keel holding her steady as she gathers pace, sure-footed and powerful, leaning into the wind as though she has been waiting all morning for exactly this. An appetite for the sea is evident; you can just feel it from the deck beneath your feet.

And then, as we reach the middle of the bay, the world falls away. There is no better description of what happens when you are truly at sea under sail. The noise of the town is behind you, gone, and that low-level hum of obligation and distraction that follows most of us through our days vanishes.

There is Silvio; there is the wind; there is the water, impossibly blue and alive with light; and there is the simple, clarifying fact of moving through it all, powered by nothing more than the relationship between cloth and air. For all intents and purposes, you are in another world entirely, one where time operates differently and the only thing that matters is what is immediately, beautifully present.

When Joel drops anchor for lunch, he reaches for a book. It is a 1932 edition of The Manual of Seamanship Vol II, and he asks if I mind if he reads aloud from it with the wry smile of a man who understands that, as a fellow bookworm, I will appreciate that old words still hold: “Organisation, or the making of good working arrangements, plays a most important part in the administration of His Majesty’s Navy. The power of organising varies in individuals and, even if some are gifted with it instinctively, it must be supplemented by a thorough knowledge of the profession and, if possible, by experience when dealing with the technical and practical control of a man-of-war. For those less gifted recourse must be had, in addition, to close observation, study, and the cultivation of a spirit of forethought.” There is something both serious and joyful in this gesture. The great tradition of the sea, observed and honoured on this perfect boat at anchor in a Cornish Bay. Joel keeps a tight ship, in every sense and it feels safe in his hands.

We anchor off Gylly, another manoeuvre adeptly accomplished under sail. Instruments are kept to a minimum on Silvio. The ship’s compass, made especially for the boat and housed in a gleaming brass case, stands proudly at midships and while technology is apparent, it’s not relied upon, as is evident as Joel shows me the charts of their recent voyage to the Scillies. He watches the bubbles in the water to gauge Silvio’s speed as we drop anchor, this is a captain who is clearly at one with the ocean. A squall comes through, so we head below decks for a welcome hot drink and bagels. In keeping with Silvio’s heritage and as a nod to her regal appearance, coffee and tea served aboard come with a Royal warrant and are served in China cups, of course. It’s all delightfully civilised and as we sit around her table, Joel tells me that even Silvio’s race crew’s uniform is shirt sleeves.

As we are lulled by the gentle rocking of Silvio at anchor, he goes on to talk about how he came to be a part of her venerable story. Constructed in steel by a select group of renowned Dutch yacht builders, she emerged as a vessel capable of being pushed hard without compromising her form, while remaining comparatively straightforward to maintain.

Having remained in the ownership of the same family for all her life, she underwent a significant structural refit in 2010-2011, but was then stored and maintained ashore until she was last sailed under Boscawen ownership in 2017. When Joel first saw her on the hardstanding at Mylor Yacht Harbour, she was in need of a complete refit. The advice was a three-year project, but Joel was keen to get her back sailing as soon as possible and so after an intense year of work at Mylor, including all-new rigging and sails, she was signed off as seaworthy with all her tickets, attestation to Joel and his unwavering passion. There are some smaller details that Joel and Hollie are still working on to bring her truly back to her former glory and there’s a month booked under cover this winter where her teak woodwork will be fully restored.

With blue skies overhead once more, we finish our tea and make ready to set sail on a course back to the harbour. We weigh anchor and I feel incredibly privileged to be offered the helm. I find her to be extremely well balanced, light and responsive; while clearly built for speed, she’s also extremely stable in a following or quartering sea and as we sail back across the bay I can’t keep the smiles under wraps, this is nothing short of joyous. There is no fuss, no drama; it’s as if Silvio is simply saying: “Here I am, just being marvellous…”

We are treated to two seal sightings on our way back: a large bull whose huge head bobs and nods towards us as if to wish us a “good day”, and then a younger pup who’s found a spot on the channel buoy to bask in the June sunshine. Other than a few smaller yachts, we have the bay to ourselves and take our time to tack back to Silvio’s harbour mooring. Joel and Hollie tell me that Silvio is sailed every single day, whether that be a guest charter, race training or a simple out-and-back to keep everyone and everything fresh – she was built to sail, after all. Designed for a racing crew of six, Silvio is currently being put through her paces by a newly formed crew in readiness for Falmouth Classics Regatta 2026. Or perhaps it’s the other way around?

A day aboard Silvio is, in the truest sense, an escape.

he crowds that flowed through the Royal Cornwall Show this year brought with them a common concern fuelled by recent world events: how to take greater control of household energy costs while preparing their homes for the years ahead. For GreenGenUK, the event offered an opportunity to hear directly from homeowners weighing up the choices available to them and seeking practical answers to pressing questions.

Air Source Heat Pumps, Solar PV systems and battery storage attracted sustained interest from visitors keen to understand how these technologies could work together to improve efficiency and reduce expenditure.

Many were particularly interested in the relationship between solar generation and low-carbon heating.

Royal Cornwall Show revealed a growing appetite for smarter home energy.

Producing electricity on-site through Solar PV can help power an Air Source Heat Pump, lowering running costs and enabling households to make greater use of energy generated at home.

Battery storage emerged as another area of growing curiosity. While many visitors associated batteries with solar panels, there was considerable interest in their value as a standalone investment. Advances in energy tariffs have created new opportunities for households to charge batteries overnight when electricity prices are lower and draw on that stored energy during periods of higher demand and higher costs. For many homeowners, the appeal lies in gaining greater flexibility and a stronger grip on monthly energy spending.

Discussion frequently turned to the changing energy market and the role of smart tariffs. As suppliers continue to introduce time-of-use pricing, households equipped with battery storage are finding new ways to maximise savings by shifting consumption to cheaper periods. Energy management is becoming an active part of household budgeting.

There was also considerable interest in the proposed increase to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The anticipated rise in grant funding from £7,500 to £9,000 for eligible households replacing oil or LPG heating systems with an Air Source Heat Pump would make adoption more accessible and strengthen the case for investing in lowcarbon heating.

With fluctuating energy prices, GreenGenUK left the show with a strong sense that energy independence has become a central consideration for households across the county.

or half a century, HBH Woolacotts has occupied a distinctive place in the commercial life of Cornwall and Devon. In an industry defined by constant technological change and intense competition, the company has grown from a modest regional electrical retailer into one of the South West’s most established names in consumer electronics and domestic appliances. Its story is one of adaptation, careful expansion and an enduring commitment to customer service.

The business was founded in July 1976 following a management buyout of the multi-brand retailer Woolacotts, whose stores once stretched from Cornwall to Haywards Heath. Led by Ted Hemmerle, the new company took on the initials HBH alongside the Woolacotts name, creating the identity that remains familiar across the region today. The family connection has never been lost. Ted’s son and grandson, Martin and Chris Hemmerle, now serve as Managing Director and Director, continuing a lineage that spans three generations.

Those early years looked somewhat different from the business customers know today. Alongside retail sales, HBH Woolacotts was heavily involved in electrical site work, having more electricians than sales staff at that time. Over the years, the company refined its focus, responding to changing customer needs and advances in technology. Today, it supplies everything from premium kitchen appliances and televisions to home audio systems and boiling-water taps, supported by a comprehensive range of delivery, installation and aftercare services.

Expansion came steadily, beginning with stores in Bude and Launceston; the company widened its reach through acquisitions and strategic investment.

Holsworthy joined the network through the purchase of Pengellys, while Plymouth became home to the United Kingdom’s first Panasonic Technics Centre in 1990.

Wadebridge followed in 1994, and the acquisition of Robin Wottons in 2003 brought stores in Liskeard and

Bodmin into the fold. The opening of a Sony Centre in Plymouth further strengthened the company’s presence in Devon.

A significant milestone arrived in 2006 with the move to a new warehouse and logistics facility. The investment increased stock capacity, strengthened buying power and enhanced delivery operations. Yet it was the opening of the St Austell Electrical Superstore in 2012 that arguably shaped the next chapter. With generous parking, extensive stockholding and integrated warehousing, the format proved enormously popular.

The concept became a model for future development, leading to the Plymouth Superstore in 2017 and, most recently, the opening of a new Barnstaple Superstore in 2025.

Managing product ranges across a rapidly changing industry demands constant attention. A dedicated buying team tracks developments across domestic appliances, entertainment technology and smart home products, ensuring that customers can choose from respected brands at a range of price points. Serving largely rural communities requires breadth as well as depth. Customers expect choice, availability and expert guidance, whether purchasing a washing machine, upgrading a television or planning a new kitchen.

Perhaps the clearest expression of the company’s philosophy is its in-house service department. At a time when many retailers hand customer support to distant call centres, HBH Woolacotts manages much of the process itself. Such an approach helps explain why customer satisfaction scores consistently sit at impressive levels, reaching 99 per cent during a recent month.

The figures are not treated as a target in themselves but as evidence of a culture that places service at the centre of every interaction.

Cornwall and Devon continue to provide a customer base that values businesses with a visible presence in their communities. As HBH Woolacotts has grown, maintaining that connection has become a priority.

Fresh from opening its Barnstaple Superstore and launching Haven Kitchens by HBH Woolacotts in 2024, the company enters its fiftieth year with plenty to occupy its attention. There are no grand announcements on the horizon, yet HBH Woolacotts continues to evolve while holding fast to the principles that have carried it through five decades: family ownership, practical expertise and service that extends well beyond the shop floor.

or Mel Chambers, encaustic tiles are far more than decorative surfaces. Each commission unfolds slowly, developing through stories, memories and personal connections that are translated into clay by hand. Working from her Cornwall studio, under the moniker of Alchemy Tiles, Mel has built a distinctive practice that combines the heritage of encaustic tile making with an approach that is entirely her own.

The craft itself has a long history. Encaustic tiles first gained prominence in medieval Europe, adorning churches, monasteries and grand buildings with intricate patterns formed from contrasting coloured clays. Their popularity surged once again during the Victorian Gothic Revival, when enthusiasm for traditional craftsmanship brought renewed appreciation for the beauty and permanence of handmade materials.

Mel draws upon this tradition while following a markedly individual path. Every tile is carved directly into wet clay by hand, without templates, moulds or repeated forms. Pattern, shape and composition emerge through the movement of the maker’s hand, ensuring that each piece possesses its own character.

The process demands patience, precision and a familiarity with the material, qualities that are evident in every finished surface.

Clients often arrive with a story they wish to preserve: a treasured place, a family connection or a significant moment. Mel listens closely, allowing those narratives to guide the development of the design. Through carving, colour and composition, personal details are woven into the work, creating tiles that carry meaning beyond their visual appeal. As the clay records every gesture and incision, the process itself becomes part of the story.

Environmental responsibility also informs the practice.

Material choices are guided by principles of careful sourcing, reuse and longevity, with an emphasis on creating pieces designed to last for generations. Mel remains involved throughout installation, ensuring each commission seats beautifully within its interior setting.

Whether installed as a kitchen splashback, a bathroom feature or a statement fireplace surround, Mel’s tiles bring together craftsmanship and storytelling in a form that becomes part of everyday life.

Braised Fillets of John Dory with Soy, Ginger & Celery SERVES: 4 INGREDIENTS: 4 celery sticks, peeled and sliced 2 John Dory, 500g (1lb 2oz) each, filleted and skinned, each fillet cut into 3

100ml (3½fl oz) water

6 spring onions, sliced

50ml (2fl oz) white wine vinegar

30g (1oz) fresh root ginger, peeled and finely chopped

20g (¾oz) caster sugar

1 green chilli, deseeded and finely sliced Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

100ml (3½fl oz) soy sauce

To serve: 1 orange, segmented

For the braising stock:

A handful of coriander leaves

200ml (7fl oz) fish stock

2 spring onions, finely sliced

100ml (3½fl oz) white wine

4 teaspoons toasted sesame oil

METHOD John Dory is a fish that varies in shape and size and can be tricky to get just right when you cook the fillets off the bone. I find it better to fillet the fish and then break it down into the natural ‘mini fillets’. This gives you six nice pieces from one fish, especially if they’re 1kg (2lb 4oz) plus, allowing you to check every piece of fish when cooking. Simply remove the smaller pieces as they’re done, leaving the thicker pieces to continue cooking. The cooking technique with this dish is nice and gentle, allowing you to see what’s going on. You can serve this as a starter or add some rice and extra vegetables for a main course.

Add the celery to the pan and simmer gently for 5 minutes.

Season the fish with salt and pepper, then add it to the pan along with the spring onions, ginger and chilli. Put the lid on and simmer gently for 5 minutes.

Warm 4 serving bowls. Once the fish is cooked, share it among the bowls and pour over a few spoonfuls of the braising stock along with a portion of the braised celery. Add an orange segment to each piece of fish, scatter over the coriander leaves and spring onions, drizzle with the sesame oil and serve.

Heat the ingredients for the braising stock in a large, wide pan with a tight-fitting lid. Stir until the sugar has dissolved.

Mackerel Tartare with Beetroot & Apple SERVES: 4 (AS A STARTER) INGREDIENTS: 2 very fresh large mackerel, gutted, filleted, pin-boned and skinned ½ shallot, finely chopped 1 green apple (any acidic variety), peeled and diced 1 tablespoon small capers in brine 1 tablespoon chopped tarragon leaves 1 tablespoon cider vinegar Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

For the beetroot: 2 large beetroot, washed 100ml (3½fl oz) cider vinegar 2 sprigs of tarragon A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil ½ shallot, finely chopped To serve: 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 handfuls of watercress, washed

METHOD If you fancy giving a raw dish a go at home, this one is a great place to start. The hardest part will be getting the mackerel at its best, but – with prior warning – a good fishmonger should be able to get you some. If not, this dish would work well with bass or bream. If you don’t happen to be a beetroot lover you can substitute it for fennel or cucumber.

To cook the beetroot, place in a saucepan and cover with water. Add the vinegar, tarragon and 2 teaspoons of salt, then bring to a simmer and cook for 30–40 minutes until tender. Insert a small knife into the beetroot to see if it’s cooked.

Leave to cool in the water.

When cool enough to handle, remove the skin and cut 4 thin slices from one beetroot.

Finely chop the rest. Lay the slices out on a tray, season with salt and pepper then drizzle with the extra virgin olive oil. Leave to cool completely.

For the tartare, cut the mackerel fillets lengthways, then cut into rough dice. Place all the fish in a bowl with the shallot, apple, capers and tarragon.

Season with salt, pepper and the vinegar. Mix well, but with a light touch.

To serve, take 4 cold plates and place a slice of beetroot on each. Share the mackerel tartare alongside. Mix the chopped beetroot with the shallot and the 6 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, then add to the plates with some watercress.

ere at Cornwall Living, we are always excited for summer when it comes to sipping a tipple from Rock Distillery and this season’s no different as we hear from the team: “We still have all of our wonderful sugar-free gins with an amazing dry vermouth for anyone wanting to make the perfect dry martini. Along with these, we have our spectacular collection of vodkas, now rounded off with Rock distillery’s Chocolate Chilli Vodka liqueur.

This is derived from English potato vodka co-distilled with crushed Cacao shells and Cacao beans with a picante kick from freshly chopped chilli.”

Whiskies continue to fly off the shelves, especially their Peanut Whiskey liqueur. “Now to crown the whiskies, we have a fabulous eight-year-old whiskey.

As with our three-year-old, it is triple distilled and aged in ex-French red wine barrels and stored at a constant 21°C so that it develops remarkable depth and character.”

The brandy collection at Rock Distillery has grown too, but still has all the favourites including the very famous Brandy Snap. Again, to elevate the brandy selection, Rock Distillery has released an amazing XO Brandy.

This exceptional spirit is made with Chardonnay grapes from the Sussex Downs, so one single type through the whole process from distillation to maturation. It is double distilled before being matured in oak barrels for nine years at an elevated temperature.

Finally, the Rock Distillery rum collection has grown yet again to 16 rums, including a fabulous new English Dark Spiced Rum which is fermented and distilled from molasses, infused with red cherries, hibiscus, honey, cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg and zests. As ever, this is cut with Cornish spring water. “Further to this, we have introduced three new rum liqueurs,” they tell us.

“The first being Hot Honey Rum liqueur, which begins with white spirit from the Caribbean infused with fresh

ginger, honey and chilli. To follow, the team have made a coffee liqueur derived again from the white rum base, then infused and macerated with ground coffee, vanilla and caramel syrup, for a smooth rich coffee flavour – perfect for an instant expresso martini.”

Last but certainly not least of the new editions, Rock the Spirit has been released. “This delicious drink is made with English deep molasses rum infused with nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, zests, chocolate and vanilla. This is then blended with Cornish spring water to create a unique and exquisite flavour. This is truly Christmas in a Bottle!”

ith spectacular views and food that punches above its weight The Cove Café, Hayle is run by a man who used to get paid to run into people for a living. There are places in Cornwall that feel like they were put there just for the lucky ones who find them.

Tucked into the cliffs above Riviere Towans Beach, overlooking the sweep of St Ives Bay, The Cove Café is very much one of those places. And if you haven't been yet, frankly, what have you been doing?

Come summer, the secret is spectacularly out. The clifftop terrace hums with sunburned families, excited dogs and people staring out across one of the most jawdropping views in the county, wondering why they ever go abroad. The Cove does what a great Cornish café should: feeds people well, makes them feel at home and sends them off slightly reluctant to leave.

But here's the thing the summer crowds don't always know: the place is just as good, arguably better, when the season turns. When the Atlantic starts showing off and Hayle beach belongs to the dog walkers and the gloriously windswept souls who consider a wet winter beach walk a treat rather than a punishment, The Cove is still right there. It's a café that rewards the brave, the local and anyone who knows that Cornwall in winter is a completely different kind of magnificent.

So, who's the man behind the magic? Step forward Rupert Cooper: former professional rugby player, owner of the award-winning Philleigh Way Cookery School on the Roseland Peninsula and the force who took on The Cove in 2023. Rupert played at a serious level for years: Nottingham, Warwickshire, Worcester, and ultimately the Cornish Pirates, which is how Cornwall got lucky enough to keep him. “My passion for cooking comes a very close second to my passion for rugby,” he's said, “and luckily for me they go hand in hand. You could say I taught myself to cook when I wasn't at the bottom of a ruck.”

There's something fitting about that. Rugby, like good cooking, is built on honest craft, no fuss and getting the fundamentals right. You don't score tries by overcomplicating things, and you don't produce great

food by overthinking them either. There’s no theatre or pretension here, just quality ingredients, treated well.

That same ethos runs through Philleigh Way, where Rupert teaches everything from fire cooking and Middle Eastern flavours to classic farmhouse recipes and Japanese technique. If you've ever wanted to actually learn something rather than just watch someone else cook beautifully on a screen, a day on the Roseland with Rupert is the kind of thing you'll still be talking about months later.

Meanwhile, back at The Cove the menu changes regularly, championing whatever Cornwall's brilliant local producers are bringing in that week. You might find Cornish fish soup with aioli and crostini, duck buns with Asian slaw, shakshuka, or a smoked beef flatbread with garlic crème fraîche. Alongside the specials sit the staples nobody wants to see disappear: breakfast baps, fresh pasties, and (always) those hot chocolates.

Trevaskis Farm, Primrose Herd, Dodo Bakery, Homage to Bovine: this is Cornwall on a plate. Which, when you think about it, is exactly what a great former rugby player would want.

The Cove is open seven days a week, 9:30am–4pm, no booking needed, although a quick email ahead of a special lunch trip is worth it. Whether you arrive sunkissed from the beach in August or salt-blasted from a clifftop walk with a muddy Labrador at your heels in winter, The Cove delivers. he Helford River has always been a working waterway. Long before guidebooks and walking trails, it carried farmers, fishermen, traders and travellers between communities divided by the inlet. Today, that tradition continues through Helford River Boats, a family-run business whose activities are based in the daily life of the estuary and knowledge acquired from spending years upon it.

At the heart of the operation is the Helford Ferry, recognised as the oldest passenger ferry crossing in Britain, with records stretching back more than a thousand years. From April to October, seven days a week, the small ferry shuttles between Helford Passage and Helford Village, carrying walkers, residents, visitors and pub-goers across the watery divide. part in Cornwall’s past. The result is an engaging account of a river that has witnessed far more than its tranquil appearance might suggest.

Single and tandem sit-on kayaks are available for hire, giving visitors the freedom to explore secluded reaches of the estuary at paddle pace. Dinosaurs return TO EDEN

Looking for

ADVENTURE? The Eden Project is bringing dinosaurs back in spectacular fashion this summer with the launch of Dinosaurs Return, running from the 25th July to the 6th September. Marking the attraction’s 25th anniversary, the event transforms Eden into a prehistoric playground featuring one of the UK’s largest collections of animatronic dinosaurs. Fifteen animatronic dinosaurs, including a towering 40-foot Tyrannosaurus rex, will be hidden among the lush planting of the Rainforest Biome, creating an immersive journey through deep time. Visitors can also enjoy Dinosaur World Live, the Olivier Award-winning family show, included with admission and performed three times daily. Alongside the dinosaurs, there will be hands-on activities, storytelling and craft sessions designed to inspire young explorers. Eden says the event will be almost three times larger than its hugely popular dinosaur experiences of a decade ago.

Enys House and Gardens invites families to make the most of summer with a week of activities designed to engage every generation. Running from 27th July to 2nd August, Family Week transforms this historic estate above Penryn into a lively setting for play and exploration.

TRURO CLASSIC CAR SHOW

Sunday 2nd August 2026 Truro Truro BID will be organising and funding the Truro Classic Car Show again, which returns to the city this summer.

It's a chance to see a wide variety of cherished classic car, vintage cars and motorcycles in a unique city centre location.

Vehicles will be on display across the city and visitors will also be able to browse automobilia and autojumble stalls and enjoy live music. The event is free to attend and to exhibit vehicles. Macmillan Cancer Support will be collecting on the day for those who wish to make a voluntary donation.

CHARLESTOWN REGATTA WEEK

25th to 31st July Charlestown Charlestown Regatta Week is a community celebration that has enlivened the harbour and village for more than 50 years, taking place over a week in late July. The programme features boat and raft races, gig rowing, a fun triathlon, children’s sports, live music, craft stalls and a grand carnival procession with Flora dancing.

Built in the 1790s for the china clay trade, Charlestown’s Georgian harbour has also starred in Poldark, lending the festivities a distinctive maritime backdrop. Free museum reveals a fascinating insight into the lives of Cornwall’s residents.

F

ew places bring together the everyday stories of Cornwall with the breadth and immediacy found at the Museum of Cornish Life.

Occupying Helston’s former market buildings, the museum holds a collection of around 40,000 objects that chart the lives, work, customs and creativity of Cornish communities. Farming tools, photographs, costumes, household items and archaeological finds all contribute to a picture of Cornwall that feels vivid and recognisable, shaped by generations of people whose experiences helped define the county.

This summer, visitors have an added reason to step through the doors. A special costume exhibition explores the lives behind the garments, revealing personal stories that stretch across different chapters of Cornish history. Among them are the clothes worn by a firefighter involved in the Torrey Canyon clean-up and a Flora Day dancer whose attire speaks of one of Cornwall’s most cherished traditions. The exhibition demonstrates how clothing can preserve memory, carrying traces of work, celebration and community long after the moment has passed.

Families visiting during the school holidays will find plenty to occupy curious hands and minds.

Free drop-in craft workshops take place every Monday afternoon from 1pm until 3pm and every

Thursday morning from 10am until noon, providing opportunities for children to make, create and engage directly with the museum’s themes. The sessions continue the museum’s long-standing commitment to learning through participation, encouraging visitors to discover Cornwall’s heritage through experience as much as observation.

The programme reaches a high point on Saturday the 25th July with the Cornish Summer Fair, a free celebration of Cornish language, music, dance and local produce. Performances, stalls and demonstrations will fill the museum with activity, creating an occasion that reflects the traditions and talents represented throughout the collection.

Open Monday to Saturday from 10 am until 4pm and free to enter, the Museum of Cornish Life offers an engaging day out that connects visitors with the people, customs and stories that continue to shape Cornwall today.
