There’s a particular kind of magic to Cornwall in the summer. Not just in the sparkling sea or the golden light that lingers into the evening, but in the sheer sense of energy and possibility that fills the air. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this is the season when Cornwall throws open its arms and invites everyone to join the celebration.
Cornwall is home to an amazing array of events and attractions as I discover from page 15. The Duchy’s music festivals are a real highlight, with top acts playing in amazing locations. There’s nothing quite like dancing on a clifftop as the sun sets. Cornwall is also home to an array of excellent theatre companies and over the summer months we are treated to some incredible open-air performances. The Minack Theatre is a real highlight, and if you’ve not yet experienced a show here it should definitely be on your bucket list. Historic tales come to life at attractions such as Bodmin Jail, Tintagel Castle and The Story of Emily while animal lovers will be thrilled by the residents of both Newquay Zoo and the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.
Another of this season’s exciting highlights is of a foodie nature; the transformation of The Quarterdeck at The Nare Hotel into Cornwall’s newest seafood destination. With sweeping views over Carne Beach and a menu that champions the very best local catch, this reimagined restaurant offers an elegant yet relaxed dining experience that perfectly captures the essence of Cornish coastal living. Whether you’re a guest or just stopping by for lunch, it’s a mustvisit for seafood lovers this summer. Turn to page 38 to tempt your tastebuds. Cornwall’s creative pulse is also beating strong this issue. We shine a light on the evocative work of seascape and landscape artist, Sophie Bagnall (page 47). Her subtle use of light captures the mood and mystery of Cornwall’s shifting coastline and her pieces are an invitation to pause, reflect and reconnect with nature.
I’m also delighted to highlight Wadebridge Dental this issue (from page 56), where World-class dentistry and care is delivered with warmth, integrity and outstanding attention to detail. As the practice prepares to welcome internationally distinguished cosmetic dentist, Dr Jason Smithson to the already distinguished team in mid-June, why not visit them on stand 344 at the Royal Cornwall Show from 5th to 7th June to discover your forever smile.
Don’t forget that nominations are now open for the Cornwall Living Awards 2025. Turn to page 6 for categories and how to nominate.
...happy reading!
Described as “the most rambunctious garden fête,” The Great Estate takes place in the picturesque grounds of Scorrier House near Redruth. This eccentric and wonderful festival mixes music, theatre, vintage fairground rides, secret gin gardens and even Victorian sports. It’s a playground for adults and children alike… where else might you stumble across a hidden woodland disco?
For three days from Friday 30th May to Sunday 1st June, luscious lawns and enchanting woodlands are whipped up into an eccentric extravaganza where human flamingos roam wild and oversized bumble bees greet guests in the gardens. With its whimsical charm and creative atmosphere, this immersive festival experience is unlike any other blending theatre, comedy and dance. This year, The Great Estate will welcome Supergrass, Happy Mondays, and Leftfield to the main stage, plus long-table feast evenings, circus acts, swimming pool and sauna sessions and thought-provoking talks. And that’s not all, festival goers can expect craft sessions for the little ones, a Victorian Sports Day, and all-round family-friendly vibes.

Across Cornwall, children of all ages need safe, loving homes. Could you be the one to make a life-changing difference to a child’s life? Every child needs and deserves a stable and nurturing family environment to thrive. As a foster carer, you have the opportunity to offer this.
Currently, there are approximately 50 children in Cornwall waiting for a place to call their home. Some will need short-term care; others may need a long-term family.
As one foster-carer says, “If you are thinking of fostering, I would encourage you to go for it. Fostering may start with uncertainty, but it grows into something extraordinary. The moment you see a child smile because they finally feel safe, you’ll know you made the right choice.”
Becoming a foster carer is an immensely rewarding experience, and we are looking for
carers from all walks of life. If you have room in your heart and your home with a passion for making a difference, Cornwall Council would like to hear from you. Offering full training, dedicated support, and financial assistance to help you every step of the way.
“Fostering to us is life-changing. It offers stability, hope, love and a future. Fostering isn’t without its challenges but seeing the positive changes in a little life is so rewarding,” says Marie, a foster carer.
Families are also needed to support children with short breaks, from a few hours to a few days or more. If you are ready to find out more, take the first step today!

Katie Warren, of Fixer Property & Management, offers her insight on the key differences between holiday homes and second homes.
“These two terms often get bundled together and contribute to the negative narrative of our industry. I feel I have a responsibility to discuss it so we can have better and more productive conversations in our communities.
“How would I describe a second home? Second homes typically stand vacant for much of the year, apart from owner/family use. Under the new regulations that came in April 2025, these types of properties will be subject to Second Home Council Tax premium, unless they meet the criteria to be exempt (for sale/probate etc). These are not particularly economically valuable and create little employment or financial circulation within the community.
“In contrast, full-time holiday lets are commercially valuable enterprises and contribute to the local economy. So long as it meets the criteria, the property will qualify
for business rates, operate commercial waste collections and meet all Health and Safety standards above and beyond those of long-term rentals and HMO. The property provides a variety of jobs in the local area, as well as guest spend outside of the property, demonstrating the local economic leakage of self-catering properties.
“This distinction matters profoundly for Cornwall’s communities, where the balance between residential needs and tourism requirements shapes policy discussions.
“For Cornwall to thrive, acknowledging these differences represents a crucial step toward developing policies that support both employment, sustainable tourism and support the need for local and affordable local housing.”
Looking for advice on buying or running your holiday let, or wishing to discuss these issues in more detail?

After a career spent navigating the highpressure trading floors of London and Madrid, Victoria Clark found her true calling on Cornwall’s shores. Following a life-altering event, she and her husband left behind the chaos of city life to embrace a slower, more meaningful existence. Today, through her company ByVictoriaClark, Victoria helps others find peace, clarity and confidence through professional decluttering.
This spring, Victoria invites us to welcome renewal into our homes. Her advice? Begin by physically touching each item you own. When you hold an object, you’re forced to make a more conscious choice: relocate it, remove it, or return it. Be bold with your ‘remove’ pile.
“For every item, ask three key questions: Do I need it? Why do I have it? Will I miss it?” suggests Victoria. “And remember – donate, donate, donate!” Maybe rather than just taking a bag to a charity shop, the contents of which they may not want or wish to sell, Victoria recommends finding charities like St Petrocs and Hidden Help that physically use the items for someone who needs them
“Decluttering,” adds Victoria, “is far more than tidying. It’s a powerful step toward restoring mental clarity, emotional wellbeing, and a brighter, more intentional life.”

As it states on Non-stop dogwear’s website, ‘Our purpose is narrowed down to one sentence: ‘Release your dog’s potential.” This sentence reminds us WHY we do what we do – why we strive to make the best dog equipment. We want to help you and your dog to “release the potential”.’
It continues, ‘Animal welfare is the priority when we make dog gear. Comfortable and functional equipment that does not limit the dog was the starting point and reason why we created Non-stop dogwear. Only the best is good enough for our fourlegged friends.’
So it’s no surprise that Slicker’s Doghouse in Padstow is a stockist of this premium Norwegian brand. From harnesses to booties, jackets to nutrition, you’ll find something that allows your canine to express its natural abilities while suitably togged. Non-stop dogwear’s gear is designed to align with the particular activity your dog is engaged in, providing both an ergonomic fit as well as outstanding quality.
As one UK reviewer writes, “We are so pleased with the harness, which is a perfect fit and our escape artist beagle cannot get out of it, yet it is comfortable for her to wear. It’s great quality too!”
If you’re looking for something thoughtfully designed to let your dog be exactly who they are – free to sniff, snooze, or strut in comfort – pop into the shop or browse the collection online. Place your order before midday, and in most cases, it’ll be dispatched the very same day.

Opening at the iconic Minack Theatre on June 9th, this high-spirited comedy is a joyous and chaotic tale, where love knows no boundaries.
Miracle is set to deliver a fresh, bold and accessible take on a beloved Shakespearean classic. It is the story of twins Sebastian and Viola who are separated from one another by sea and storm. Shipwrecked and without her brother for the first time, Viola finds herself washed up in Illyria, a playground for the hedonistic and lovesick elite. What unravels next sends the story spinning into a tangle of unrequited love, mistaken identities, hilarious awkwardness, cruelty, and mischief.

The Story of Emily at St Ive near Liskeard ranks among the finest family visitor experiences in Cornwall and throughout the country.
For sheer innovation, originality and illumination into the life of an extraordinary woman, as well as an exposé of one of the darker sides of British history, The Story of Emily is a remarkable achievement. Although rightly venerated, in South Africa where she made her most enduring mark, her story is little known in this country. It has taken vision and determination to bring it to life in the place where she spent her formative years.
On the day that we made the trip, hosts Clare and Hannah were on hand to greet us in the bright and newly built reception area. Here, we were given clear instructions on what our prebooked visit would entail: a short introductory video in a small purpose-built auditorium, followed by a walk to the completely renovated Rectory and the newly constructed War Rooms.
The Rectory, where Emily was born in 1860, has been painstakingly restored to how it would have appeared to the Hobhouses in 1875. Headsets are donned so that an audible commentary can illuminate their story as we pass through, drawing room, dining room, study, kitchen and eventually to the bedrooms, servant rooms, and dress-up studio upstairs. Two weeks after her father’s death, she packed her suitcases and left St Ive, eager to step out from the confines of this sheltered existence. She never returned to the village. She was 34 years old.
It is the contrast of her upbringing to what followed that adds a certain piquancy to her tale, one that finds form in the War Rooms –the second part of the Story. From a world of genteel sobriety at the Rectory to the horrors being perpetrated in the Transvaal and Orange Free State at the end of the 19th century, it is here the visitor is left in no doubt as to the humanity and determination of this remarkable woman. This is a unique, immersive and historical experience that will leave visitors awestruck – by both Emily’s bravery and the advanced technological experience itself. It offers a narrative to the second part of her life and sheds light on to why she is so highly regarded in South Africa and yet just a footnote in British history.
To round off our truly memorable visit we decamped to the restaurant – also a very different experience in itself. Here you can dine from a menu of 19th century South African heritage recipes whilst looking out through the colossal glass frontage to the Victorian inspired kitchen garden beyond.
The Story of Emily is definately a visit worth embarking upon – it will inspire.

The technological advancements across these new televisions reflect the industry's focus on enhancing home entertainment experiences. Viewers can expect sharper images with more accurate colour reproduction, faster response times for gaming, and smarter connectivity
options that integrate seamlessly with other devices. The improved processing power also means better upscaling of standard content to near-4K quality, ensuring even older media looks impressive on these cutting-edge screens. For those passionate about home cinema, this year's models offer significant audio improvements as well. Manufacturers have recognised that sound quality is just as important as picture performance, with built-in speaker systems that deliver more immersive experiences without requiring separate soundbars.
While new models generate excitement, they also create opportunities for bargain hunters. Clearance sales on outgoing models often feature prices lower than Black Friday deals, offering exceptional value for savvy shoppers. These previous-generation TVs still provide excellent performance at dramatically reduced prices, making premium technology accessible to more consumers.

Cornwall's forward-thinking homeowners discover financial and environmental benefits through renewable heating technology.
Standing at the forefront of a new age in home heating GreenGenUK is ready to instigate this transformation, guiding property owners toward sustainable solutions that combine environmental responsibility with practical comfort.
DISCOVER MORE...
GreenGenUK have recently celebrated winning six awards:
• Multiple Wins at the South West Energy Efficiency Awards 2025
• Renewable Heating Installer of the Year – Winner (for the third time!)
• Apprentice of the Year
– Winner and Highly Commended
• Small Scale Project of the year - Highly Commended
• New Build Project of the Year - Highly Commended
• Solar Installer of the Year –Commended
The company specialises in air source heat pumps, an innovative technology that extracts warmth from the surrounding atmosphere – even on chilly Cornish days – and efficiently converts it into household heating. With the government currently offering a substantial £7,500 incentive toward installation costs, the financial barriers that once deterred homeowners from making the switch have significantly diminished.
“The technology represents a genuine alternative to traditional fossil fuel systems,” explains a recent convert from Truro, whose Victorian terraced house now maintains a consistent temperature throughout winter at a fraction of previous costs. “The difference in our monthly outgoings has been remarkable.”
GreenGenUK's approach is thoroughly tailored to individual circumstances, with three distinct packages – Essentials, Enhanced and Elite – designed to accommodate varying requirements and budgets. Each installation is handled by technicians who understand the unique challenges presented by Cornwall's diverse housing stock, from granite-walled cottages to contemporary coastal developments.
For those particularly drawn to energy independence, the company also offers complementary technologies such as solar panels and battery storage systems. These additions prove especially valuable during Cornwall's luminous summer months when excess energy can be stored for use during darker periods.
Beyond immediate comfort, these systems add tangible value to properties while substantially reducing carbon emissions – a dual benefit that resonates strongly with the county's environmentally conscious residents. The technology operates discreetly, with modern units designed to integrate unobtrusively with existing architecture.
As Cornwall continues its journey toward sustainability, companies like GreenGenUK provide the practical means for residents to participate meaningfully in this transition while enjoying the financial advantages of reduced energy consumption.

But what’s the best way to get to the Isles of Scilly? Here’s how.
With soft white sands, crystalclear waters and a laid-back island rhythm, it’s no wonder thousands of visitors make the journey each year for the ultimate day trip escape. This tiny archipelago is made up of five inhabited islands, each with its distinctive charm. Whether you’re exploring by foot, bike, boat or kayak, there’s something deeply restorative about a day spent on Scilly. Think wildlife safaris, coastal walks, swimming in turquoise coves, or simply unwinding in a beachside café with local food and sea views.
Just twenty-eight miles off the coast of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly might feel like a world away if you’ve never been before; so near but so far. But reaching them is easier than you might think. Isles of Scilly Travel will have you covered.
Travel by sea on Scillonian III, their passenger ferry from Penzance, for a scenic crossing that’s part of the adventure. The route takes in dramatic Cornish landmarks like the Minack Theatre and Land’s End – and is famed for wildlife spotting, from dolphins to seabirds and even the occasional whale. With day trip fares from just £35 and
a special £25 return for Cornwall residents, it’s a great-value getaway. Special longerstay sailings throughout the season give you up to 7 hours and 45 minutes to enjoy island life.
If you’re after a bird’s-eye view of paradise, hop on a Skybus flight from Land’s End. You’ll be on the islands in just 20 minutes, soaring over the Cornish coast and sparkling Atlantic. Or choose a Fly+Sail combo and experience both. Fly out, ferry back, making the journey just as memorable as the destination.
Both Scillonian III and Skybus welcome dogs, so your four-legged friends don’t have to miss out. Operating from spring through late autumn, there’s a perfect time for everyone to make the trip.
Whichever way you travel, one thing’s for certain: the Isles of Scilly will leave you feeling that you’ve been a world away – and already dreaming of your next visit.

Remember that unmistakable sense of freedom, living in the moment and the simple joy of complete contentment? As we grow older, those feelings become ever more precious and increasingly rare amidst the demands of everyday life.
Perhaps your holidays took you to Cornwall, where the sparkling seas, endless sands, and bracing salty air left a lasting impression. What we now refer to as staycations were, back then, the most magical holidays of all.
Secluded on a stretch of the Cornish coast on the beautiful Roseland Peninsula stands The Nare, a five-star country house hotel by the sea. Unique in its ability to evoke the cherished memories of childhood holidays and offer a sense of calm and relaxation like nowhere else can.
Reopened in 1989 by Bettye Gray, the hotel embodies classic five-star hospitality, timeless
elegance, and just the right touch of nostalgia from a bygone era.
Today, Gray’s grandson, Toby Ashworth, a fifth-generation hotelier, continues her legacy, welcoming discerning guests to The Nare. With its carefully curated charm and commitment to excellence, it is an experience to be treasured, shared, and remembered.
Book a stay at The Nare and time seems to slow to your own rhythm, creating a cocoon of comfort from the moment you arrive. In your room, you will find a decanter of sherry at the ready, or a beautifully arranged fruit plate complete with a branded knife and fork. Small touches that leave you with a quiet smile – this just doesn’t happen at home.
In a world dominated by minimalist, contemporary design, The Nare stands apart. It’s a place where heritage, warmth and character are celebrated. Whilst tradition is treasured, not everything at The Nare
remains the same. The Quarterdeck Seafood Restaurant is The Nare’s new premier seafood dining destination with breath-taking sea views over Gerrans Bay. The restaurant offers a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere and a menu that showcases the very best seafood the county has to offer. It’s a dining experience that only The Nare could curate.
Nestled along the gentle curve of Gerrans Bay, The Quarterdeck offers a front-row seat to uninterrupted turquoise vistas, where golden sands stretch beneath dramatic cliffs, and Nare Point stands proudly on the horizon.
Thoughtfully designed interiors complement the sparkling blue waters, creating an elegant yet welcoming setting for special occasions, intimate gatherings, and memorable dining experiences. In Summer, the outdoor deck invites guests to bask in the sunshine with a chilled glass of Chablis, while in winter, large panoramic windows ensure the stunning views can still be enjoyed in warmth and comfort.
If the dishes are the jewels of the Cornish coast, then the menu is the treasure chest waiting to be discovered. From the delicate St Mawes octopus to hand-dived scallop ceviche that melts in the mouth, each plate is a celebration of the sea.
Cornish Bluefin tuna makes a proud appearance, a true highlight with the species recently returning to local waters. The Monkfish Wellington is poised to become a firm favourite, offering a creative seafood twist on a classic. Whole Dover sole and grilled local lobster allow for the delicate flavours to shine and take centre stage. But the crown jewel of The Quarterdeck’s new menu is the magnificent Fruits de Mer platter – a showstopper featuring oysters, whole lobster, crevettes, crab, mussels and scallops. With a deep commitment to sustainability, The Quarterdeck incorporates hand-foraged ingredients such as samphire, wild garlic and elderflower to enhance its locally sourced seafood.
As well as ensuring that ingredients are as local as possible, The Nare is equally dedicated to supporting ethical fishing practices and is proudly partnered with the National Lobster Hatchery to contribute to their Buy One, Set One Free initiative.
For every lobster purchased, The Nare donates £1 to help raise and release baby lobsters back into the local waters, ensuring the continuation of this cherished delicacy for future generations.
With an unwavering commitment to excellence in cuisine, service, and sustainability, The Quarterdeck Seafood Restaurant offers a dining experience that lingers long after the final bite, much like your treasured memories of Cornish seaside holidays.
Now open for bookings, contact The Nare to book your sea view table – and why not stay the night and experience classic British hospitality at its very best.

Kota and Kota Kai are places of perpetual motion – environments where culinary inspirations blend and transform.
Celebrating 20 years of culinary excellence, Kota has been a cornerstone of Porthleven’s food scene. Together with its 14-yearold sister establishment, Kota Kai, they've transformed this once-quiet fishing village into a gastronomic destination attracting visitors from across the UK and beyond.
After 14 years, Kota Kai recently underwent a comprehensive rebrand and refurbishment. The addition of a wood-burning fire, refreshed colour palette, new bar, and removal of several walls has created an inviting space with distinct areas. The lounge room has been reimagined as an intimate dining area available for private hire for up to 30 people. The long dining room, with its harbour views, accommodates larger parties of up to 70 guests. The former end room is now a snug area centred around the woodburning stove, seating up to 30 people. The new colour scheme has elevated the restaurant
while maintaining the influence of the owner’s Asian-Ma - ori heritage.
Kota Kai’s culinary evolution includes the introduction of a Josper grill, adding a distinctive smoky dimension to the menu. The team grills fish, vegetables, and meats, creating dishes with complex flavour profiles and a signature char. A prime example is their Aji Rojo sauce, where ingredients are blistered to absorb characteristic BBQ flavours before being blended into a versatile sauce perfect for tacos. Even simple grilled steaks take on new life when paired with their Asian green herb dressing.
What distinguishes both restaurants is the owner's diverse background. His Ma - ori heritage informs his passion for foraging and gathering – practices he grew up with, collecting seafood and seaweeds from the beach. This connection to the sea resonates deeply with their coastal location. Meanwhile, his Chinese-Malay
ancestry manifests in subtle Asian twists throughout the menu, from soy master stock in Kota's pork cheek dish to the heritage-inspired Curry Laksa at Kota Kai. This cultural fusion creates a distinctive culinary identity unique in Cornwall.
As Kota marks its 20th anniversary, the restaurant has evolved while maintaining its signature Asian influences. Following February's refurbishment, they introduced a new menu format with snack and Pintxos options complementing the tasting menus.
The redesigned dining room feels more vibrant and facilitates greater interaction with guests, with chefs often personally delivering dishes.
The upgraded bar area now accommodates an expanded wine selection, anticipating the launch of Kota's wine shop in late spring. This venture will allow customers to sample and purchase wines from small producers with sustainable practices. Later this year, they’ll inaugurate the Kota Wine Club, hosting winemaker and supplier dinners.
Both establishments feature carefully curated artwork. At Kota, they've collaborated with Maxine Greer, whose work reflects ingredients used in the kitchen. Similarly, artists featured at Kota Kai – Zee’s porthole-shaped works, Felix's lounge pieces, and Mickey’s photography –capture the restaurant's essence.
Kota Kai recently welcomed Ryan Venning as Head Chef, bringing fresh experience while maintaining signature Asian flavours. At Kota, long-time colleague Ross Sloan has adapted to the more accessible menu format of smaller plates alongside a frequently changing sixcourse chef’s menu.
Community engagement has been fundamental to both restaurants. The Porthleven Food Festival, conceived by Jude and friends in 2009, has grown from a small local event into a nationally recognised celebration. During the festival, both restaurants host special events: Kota Kai offers feasts with DJs throughout the weekend, while Kota focuses on champagne and sparkling wines paired with seafood and vegetarian dishes.
The restaurants source ingredients locally, foraging along the coast and in woodlands, working with organic farms, local fishermen, and butchers. Their cocktail menu emerged from collaborative sessions focusing on flavours complementing the food, with resident bar expert Ash continuing to develop exceptional new creations.
With Kota now in its 20th year and Kota Kai in its 14th, they've witnessed and contributed to Porthleven’s transformation from a relatively unknown town to a recognised culinary destination. Following their recent refurbishments, both restaurants continue their gastronomic journey, maintaining their position at the forefront of Cornwall’s dining scene.

Rock
As spring unfurls across Cornwall, Rock Distillery has emerged with remarkable vitality, launching a collection of spirits that captures the essence of the region's innovative spiritmaking tradition. While their award-winning gins continue to delight connoisseurs, it's their expanding rum portfolio that commands attention as warmer days approach.
The distillery's Victory Rum stands as a thoughtful tribute to VE Day – a sophisticated dark spirit aged meticulously for five years in oak barrels. The result is a deep, fullbodied experience that glides across the palate when sipped neat, yet holds its character magnificently when incorporated into cocktails.
Their Chocolate Orange Rum represents an inspired departure from convention. Beginning with premium Caribbean white spirit, this creation transforms infusion with fresh orange zest and dark chocolate, before being mellowed with pure Cornish Spring Water. The finished product delivers a velvety texture with complementary notes that linger pleasantly on the finish.
Rock Distillery's venture into liqueurs demonstrates equal finesse and creativity. Building upon their established Lemongino and Orangino offerings, they've expanded

into whiskey-, vodka-, and brandy-based variations. Their brandy-based Brandysnap liqueur evokes the warmth of caramelised honeycomb and toffee, while Orange Breeze presents a vibrant harmony of sweet and bitter orange notes married to their distinctively smooth Cornish brandy.
Visitors to Rock Distillery can experience these creations at tasting stations designed for unhurried appreciation of each spirit's unique character. Their physical presence extends beyond their Wadebridge distillery to shops in Bude, Padstow, and Tintagel, with additional locations in Corsham and Dartmouth for those venturing beyond Cornwall's borders.
In the tradition of fine spirit-making, Rock Distillery has crafted a collection that doesn't merely replicate established formulas but rather interprets them through a distinctly Cornish lens, creating drinks worth savouring as spring transitions to the golden days of summer.

“In all my work I try to re-purpose as much as possible, from fibreglass offcuts from surfboards to ghost fishing nets, which I then use to create texture. “I paint everyday objects in large empty spaces and explore the human characteristics the objects reveal both alone and in relation to each other. Compositions are often ambiguous. As our perspective is challenged we are tempted to forget what we know and respond to the ordinary in a new way.”
Often autobiographical in nature but blending into the realms of magical realism, Beth’s beguiling paintings invite the viewer into a comfy chair, to sit under an olive tree or to dive into an expanse of warm orange. She applies layers of solid colour in a meditative act that seems almost domestic in its care and familiarity. The result being vast and enveloping.
There are no inert objects in Beth’s works, all things are beings of importance. Energy hops from form to form and perspectives shift under their weight. The paintings seem
to anticipate our needs, reaching out to catch us in a human embrace as we sink, bounce, sip, fly…
With an established career spanning 25 years, Beth’s work has reached international audiences. She has exhibited in the US, Southeast Aisa and across Europe. Paintings can be found in galleries in Milan, across the UK and in private collections. Beth lives with her husband and three young children at their home near Constantine, Falmouth.

Ethical jewellery, cast in beach sand.
Justin Duance Jewellery create jewellery with narrative and meaning by casting each piece in beach sand. No two are the same, each one carrying the essence of the place in which it was cast.
Every sandcast piece starts by being hand carved from wax, which is then pressed into a mould made with sand from a beach of your choosing. The magic happens as the mould is filled with molten gold, mixing with the sand to create an organic piece of jewellery with a unique texture.
The Sea Treasure rings combine the sandcasting technique with one-of-akind gemstones set in hand carved bezels. Reminiscent of corals, these rings feel like a treasure found on the seabed. They are currently available to buy on their website, or customers can draw inspiration from these pieces and choose their own gemstones for their ring.
At the workshop, there are boxes of stunning gemstones in almost every colour of the rainbow. The environmental and social impact of the materials is important to the team. Their precious metals are 100% recycled and they offer two options when
it comes to gemstones: ethically mined or recycled.
“The stones we use are fully traced from their mine of origin, right up until they are on your finger, or they are recycled. While we may not know the origins of the recycled stones, we love the idea of using what is already on the earth’s surface, giving these beautiful gems a new lease of life. It’s better for the planet, and your purse!”
Customers are welcome to visit the workshop where you can try on the sea treasure rings, among many others, and peruse the collections of gemstones. Find the perfect stone for you, and it could be the beginning of your very own unique design.
Justin Duance can also remodel existing jewellery, transforming heirloom gold and gemstones into something new.

Our competitions give just a small glimpse of the very best of what some of our favourite businesses have to offer, but you have to be in it to win it! After entering a Cornwall Living competition, Debbie Powell and her family won an amazing seven-day break at the Wave Watching Apartment in St Ives, courtesy of Cornish Escapes: “It was absolutely beautiful and the views were stunning, we really felt very lucky. The rooms were beautifully decorated, spacious, tasteful and full of character. We didn't need the television because we were mesmerized by the glorious ocean vista. We loved exploring the local area and found a charming little cove to while away our days. We all had a fantastic time and made some wonderful memories. A beautiful place to visit.”

2 MARTIN JOHN FOWLER
First Light Porthleven by Martin John Fowler
Martin John Fowler’s paintings bear the weight of shifting tides – both literal and figurative. Brought up in the mining towns of South Yorkshire, he honed his craft at Doncaster and Sheffield Colleges of Art before setting out to chart Britain’s evolving landscapes. From the Scottish isles to Cornwall’s hidden coves, his work captures the uneasy dialogue between industry and wilderness. His acrylics, applied with hands and sticks, are raw, immediate and deeply felt. His paintings, drawings and prints are held in many private collections but can be viewed at the Custom House Gallery, in Porthleven.

for excellence. With a strong focus on gentle, minimally invasive techniques, the team believes that cosmetic dentistry should be as accessible, natural and stress-free as possible.
Joining the already highly experienced Wadebridge Dental team, and with over 25 years of experience and a reputation for delivering stunning, natural-looking results, Dr Smithson’s work combines precision with artistry. His special interest lies in composite bonding, a non-invasive treatment that transforms smiles often without drilling or damaging natural teeth. The result? A brighter, more confident smile in just one or two appointments.
Highly regarded across the globe for his expertise in composite bonding and minimally invasive smile makeovers, Dr Smithson is a name trusted not only by patients but by dentists themselves. In fact, many dental professionals travel great distances to attend his lectures or to be treated by him personally.
For patients considering cosmetic dentistry, this is a rare opportunity to access caring, World-class treatment right here in Cornwall. Whether you’re looking to close gaps, even out your smile, restore chipped or worn teeth or looking for cosmetic well-fitted dentures, Dr Smithson offers the kind of results that are usually reserved for celebrity clinics in London, without the travel or the premium price tag.
Known for his meticulous technique, calm chairside manner, and eye for aesthetic detail, Dr Smithson is considered one of the leading figures in his field. He has delivered lectures and hands-on training across Europe, North
America, Asia and Australia, teaching other dentists how to achieve excellence in cosmetic bonding. His treatments are designed to enhance your smile in a way that looks completely natural.
Unlike traditional cosmetic procedures that may require drilling away healthy enamel or placing veneers, composite bonding preserves the tooth structure and achieves immediate results with minimal discomfort.
Dr Jason Smithson will be seeing patients at Wadebridge Dental from mid-June, and spaces are expected to fill quickly.
Whether you're a long-time patient or someone considering cosmetic dentistry for the first time, seeking a subtle enhancement or a full smile transformation, you can expect World-class dentistry and care delivered with warmth, integrity and outstanding attention to detail. Christina Feltham’s ceramics are rooted in Cornwall’s landscape, informed by stacked coastal forms, mine stacks and sea reflections. After a career in brand design, she discovered ceramics as a way to combine sculptural form with architectural influence. Using traditional barrel firing, she incorporates seaweed, driftwood and metals to create organic patterns. Her process – coiling, slab building and beeswax polishing – is slow, textured and collaborative, with her children helping gather materials from the Cornish coast.

Discover how SUEZ recycling and recovery UK is helping Cornwall turn waste into opportunity.
SUEZ recycling and recovery UK has partnered with Cornwall Council to transform how the county approaches waste management. Their collaboration goes far beyond simply collecting rubbish – it’s creating a circular system where yesterday's waste powers today's homes, enriches local farmland as compost and keeps valuable resources in use rather than locked away in landfill.
This partnership represents a fundamental shift in thinking about materials we once discarded, reworking them as valuable assets in Cornwall’s sustainable future.
From the energy recovery facility at the Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre, where non-recyclable waste is transformed into electricity, to composting centres where green waste is converted into rich loam for local use, Cornwall's waste is entering a new chapter. Materials that once would have been lost to landfill now play a role in a circular economy, creating value where it was once overlooked.
With Simpler Recycling now being implemented for workplaces with 10 or more employees, which includes clear rules for recycling – covering food waste and glass waste – SUEZ is helping businesses, schools and hospitals across Cornwall to stay on track and comply with the reforms. The impact is also visible in small yet powerful ways.
Across SUEZ’s re-use shops in Truro, St. Austell, Falmouth, Launceston and United Mines, pre-loved belongings are being given a second life. This initiative isn't merely
about objects; it’s about people. These shops are creating local jobs, supporting families and assisting Cornwall's student community in accessing affordable essentials.
The impact is tangible. In just five months, over 52 tonnes of once-forgotten items have found new meaning and over 100,000 households now have access to these community-led hubs. Beyond the numbers, it's the growing sense of community pride that comes to the fore.
With global expertise and local knowledge, SUEZ and the communities of Cornwall are transforming today's waste into tomorrow's resources, crafting a future shaped by collaboration and progress.
Visit their website at www.suez.co.uk to learn more about how SUEZ is supporting Cornwall’s journey towards a circular economy.
