recordbreaking year!

Cornwall Hospice Care is delighted to announce that their shops and donation centres have achieved their greatest ever profit! In the last financial year, the Cornish charity’s retail team have collectively raised a massive £1.65 million towards the cost of providing care at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice, St Austell and St Julia’s Hospice, Hayle. Paul Brinsley, Chief Executive of Cornwall Hospice Care shared: “Huge congratulations to all our staff and volunteers, who make our retail operation so successful and a big thank you to the people of Cornwall who donate to us and shop in our stores. This is a bigger contribution to our care costs than that provided by our local Integrated Care Board. That seems wrong to me, when we’re offering a vital healthcare service that in turns saves the NHS money.”

Cornwall Hospice Care have 30 charity shops from Penzance in the very west to their most northerly in Bude, and from Perranporth on the north coast to Looe on the south coast!

As well as your usual high-street charity shops they have dedicated furniture shops, bargain outlets and Retro vintage stores in Falmouth, Launceston and St Ives. You can donate your items to them through their dedicated donation sites, and they even collect furniture donations directly from you!

Charity shops are not only vital for funding good causes, they encourage us all to reduce waste, re-use and recycle and give us the opportunity to do so. Find your nearest shop or donation site at

Lifesaving hub for young women

Suicide rates in young women under 24 in the UK are the highest they’ve ever been since recording began by the ONS in 1981. In July 2020 Georgia Gallaway, aged just 19, tragically took her own life. In the wake of devastating heartbreak for the loss of her beautiful daughter, Georgia’s mum, Sophie Alway, vowed to help as many young girls as possible to stop this from ever happening again. As a result, Sophie founded Georgia’s Voice.

Georgia’s Voice is a suicide prevention charity based in Cornwall offering fundamental emotional support to young women aged 18-25 with mental health concerns, such as member Katie (pictured). Free weekly support groups offer a vital opportunity for young women to receive emotional support using a variety of methods.

Bring back the joy of hearing

Hearing loss has been associated with cognitive decline, isolation and loneliness. Whether through noise exposure or general wear and tear, hearing loss comes to us all. Age-related hearing loss starts at a young age, with 40% of 50-year-olds having an impairment. It occurs gradually and affects the clarity of conversation whereby speech sounds muffled or unclear. Conversing in noisy or social settings can be very challenging and tiring. As a result, those with hearing loss can become more isolated as they avoid these challenging listening environments.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Hearing aids not only address the hearing impairment, but they slow down the deterioration and stimulate the brain. In fact, the earlier

Who are Home-Start Kernow?

Due to domestic violence, Anna, was forced to leave her home with three young children, all under five. Living in a new area with no nearby family support, she found herself isolated and struggling to cope.

Home-Start Kernow matched Anna with a volunteer, who visited her each week. This volunteer helped with household tasks and provided emotional support. Additionally, they assisted with paperwork related to her child’s disability.

Home-Start Kernow referred Anna to other support available locally and despite initial reluctance, she accepted referrals to the foodbank as well as emergency funding for essentials. Six months on, Anna was growing in confidence and had made connections in her area.

You can help Home-Start Kernow to support families like Anna’s to have a brighter future in Cornwall.

Discover innovative awning solutions that combine beauty and practicality for any outdoor area.

Markilux 990

Awnings not only protect your family from the sun’s harsh rays, they also help to prevent your valuable furnishings from fading and reduce the internal temperature of your home when the sun is at its hottest. An awning can also help to extend your home into the garden and with integral lighting and heating options available your awning will provide a social space usable on into the evening.

At Westcountry Blinds, their company ethos has always been to partner with the very best manufacturers therefore they exclusively use German-based Markilux Awnings, who were winner of a coveted Red Dot Design Award 2024. Markilux have a wide variety of awnings available; with the help of Westcountry Blinds, we take a look at some of their best sellers.

Markilux 990

Small, space-saving and lightweight, the Markilux 990 full cassette awning discreetly

blends into the architectural facade of your home. With its discreet 124mm cassette, it is perfect for shading small terraces and balconies. With the ability to individually select your awning cover, and with the option of bright chrome end caps and a U-shaped front profile, the attractive design of this awning will allow you to enjoy many carefree hours in the most beautiful shade.

Markilux MX-3

The MX-3 is a beautifully designed, compact folding-arm awning with a curved cassette that is sure to be the visual highlight of any patio or balcony. The all-round cassette and screen profiles give this awning model an unmistakably expressive look. At the same time, the Markilux MX-3 offers unique design options including frame and fabric colour, as well as numerous optional additional features, such as LED lighting and sensors for weatherdependent control, which can be configured as desired.

Markilux Pergola Compact

The Markilux Pergola Compact offers an extremely stable option for sun protection for small terraces or balconies, giving an impressive graceful shape. This space-saving awning system is an all-round success. The awning cover is fully protected by the angular, compact full cassette and the lateral guide tracks of the pergola awning keep the fabric cover at optimum tension in wind and weather. With an electric awning model available, nothing stands in the way of many cosy hours outside.

Markilux awnings and pergolas come with multiple options, depending on the model, as well as a choice of operation methods. Opt for an ergonomic stainless-steel crank for manual operation of your awning, with the additional option of a servo-supported gear mechanism to make it easier to operate; or a fully motorised version with remote control. Also, when paired with the Somfy TaHoma Switch, you can even operate your awning when you’re out and about via a smartphone or tablet. There are also sensor options available. Light sensors to bring the awning out, or wind and rain sensors to retract the awning back in prevailing weather conditions. A Westcountry

Blinds’ favourite is the Markilux Vibrabox; an inertia sensor which, depending on wind load, will retract the awning back to protect it from damage. This sensor is battery powered so does not require additional power supplies. As previously mentioned, additional options include LED lighting, which can be built into the cassettes on some models, with separate light bars available for creating a lovely ambient mood as the light fades. There are also heating options available, with some models allowing these to be fitted to the cassette and, for those that don’t, there are standalone units available so no-one need feel chilly. These options allow your awning to be enjoyed long into the evening on those cooler summer evenings.

Westcountry Blinds also supply commercial awnings into the hotel and catering industry, as well as for schools, shops and businesses. Commercial awnings can be colour matched to building facades and corporate brand palettes, with the option of the fabric being sign written with a company name or logo. Whatever your awning need, we highly recommend contacting Westcountry Blinds or visiting their showroom today to discuss your options – the only limit is your imagination.

Not only can garden fences be things demarcate a boundary but they can also protect and look pleasing at the same time.

We all possess an innate need to cherish and keep the things that we hold most dear secure and protected. When it comes to the garden not only do we want to keep those costly shrubs and perennials safe from predators but more importantly our offspring. The desire to explore when we’re very young is an irresistible urge, so as adults it’s important that we create an environment that gives the illusion to a young mind that they’re heading out into the wild!

This was the dilemma faced by Norma, a switched-on grandparent who lives near Bude. She quickly realised she had the space to allow her grandchildren free-rein in the garden but that its boundary certainly wasn’t impervious. Gaps here and there, that wouldn’t have got a second thought from an adult’s perspective, would certainly attract the curiosity of a young mind. Faced with this problem, Norma hunted around, did her research and when satisfied made contact with Colourfence.

And here’s why. Colourfence provides an exceptional blend of practicality and aesthetic appeal unmatched by many other products of a similar ilk. Its robust and durable construction ensures security and protection for your garden whilst being

completely maintenance-free. Something that certainly gave a big tick to one of Norma’s requirements. This translates to significant long-term savings, both financially and in terms of time and effort, as you won't need to spend hundreds of pounds or countless hours on treatments and upkeep required by alternative products.

Olly Daglish, director of Colourfence Cornwall, and his team set about bringing Norma’s dream to fruition. A site survey and discussion resulted in some ground work being done in preparation for the installation of the new structure. All went smoothly with the big test coming a few days after the work team had finished on site. Reporting back Norma says she has counted all the grandchildren out, and counted them all back in. Not one escapee!

With a wealth of knowledge and experience under their belt, the Oltco team are on hand to transform your outside spaces.

Originally established in Cornwall as a family business, the Oltco story began in 2004, selling and installing non-slip solutions for homes and businesses. Fast forward 20 years, today Oltco is the UK’s leading supplier and installer of resin solutions, transforming outdoor spaces from driveways to balconies.

Heading up the Cornwall team is Kristian Evans who has been a crucial part of Oltco Cornwall for four years. “We operate on a national scale,” Kris explains, “helping clients up and down the country transform their outside spaces with a low maintenance, permeable and eco-friendly surface. However, we stay true to our roots and Oltco’s HQ can still be found in our hometown of Newquay, Cornwall.”

Kris, along with a team of installers, has been installing Resin Bound and Recycle Bound surfaces across the county in leading visitor attractions and restaurants for several years.

“Some of our recent projects include installing our Recycle Bound system to a new Mini Golf bar/restaurant in Newquay,” Kris continues, “recycling the equivalent to 975,000 straws

in the process. Our work can also be seen at a popular Tapas bar, Clover Club, and a community garden where the pathways were required to be wheelchair friendly, alongside an array of residential properties.”

The team’s knowledge of Resin Bound surfaces enables them to provide their clients with a guarantee of up to 20 years. Dedicated to providing outstanding service from consultation to completion and beyond, the team’s support doesn’t stop there. Located at HQ is a team of dedicated account managers, customer care managers and administrators who are on hand Monday to Friday to help with any enquiries. “We are proud of the team we have grown at Oltco,” Kris concludes, “and are positive that over the coming years there will be many friendly new additions to add to the Oltco family.”

For the past 35 years the Cornwall Garage Door Centre have been keeping the county’s garages safe and secure.

When it comes to garage doors, choosing quality products ensures long-term benefits, both in terms of durability and overall satisfaction. At the Cornwall Garage Door Centre, they understand that reliable weather protection and security is essential for safeguarding your garage and its contents from the elements and would-be thieves.

That's why they offer a range of high-quality options, designed to withstand even the harshest weather conditions that the Cornish climate can throw at them, and the most determined criminal.

However, as an innovating business, one that has a firm base from which to spring from, they’ve decided to expand their offering this summer. In addition to garage doors, they are looking to provide a host of accessories that can be said to have a kinship with the core business. Top of the list are garden awnings, pergolas, louvered roofs, glass roofs, glass rooms and plantation shutters, all of which are available under their Shade Solution range. These additions not only enhance the general look of your property but also offer practical benefits, such as additional shade when the sun decides to appear or protection when it’s lashing it down! In both instances the combined benefits will appeal to those looking to make the most of their outdoor space this summer.

From where we stand at Cornwall Living it's easy to see why they’ve chosen this path to follow. It’s obvious that the expertise gained from installing various types of garage doors, was already in place and therefore transferable to products that rely upon a similar set of mechanics. From a customer perspective this is extremely reassuring. It suggests that the Cornwall Garage Door Centre know what they’re doing and have a track record to prove it!

In fact, their team of trusted, reliable experts have been dedicated to providing exceptional service and high-quality products for some time now. With years of experience in the industry, they are committed to helping you find the best solutions for your garage door and outdoor living needs. You can trust them to deliver the products and provide the installation that meet the highest standards, ensuring your investment is still functioning in years to come. Contact them today to learn more about how they can enhance your garage and outdoor living experience.

As the day winds down and the sun begins its descent, it's time to indulge in a sunset grill on the beach. Thankfully, there’s no need to be lugging around a bulky barbecue; the Skotti grill is super lightweight and portable – folding flat into its carry bag – meaning you’ll be cooking up a feast on the soft sands of a secluded cove in no time. Solar for

Now is the best time to get solar PV installed in time for summer.

With renewable energy at the fore of many of our minds we spoke to GreenGenUK for some advice on solar installations and why they are good for both the planet and your pocket. Solar PV systems use sunlight to generate electricity, making them a sustainable, renewable and inexhaustible energy source. So, how can you maximise the benefits of your solar installation? Energy typically exported to the grid is instead stored in a battery bank. This stored energy is then utilised to offset grid demand during evenings or overnight, resulting in additional energy savings and a reduced carbon footprint. Using such a system to generate your own energy can lead to substantial savings on annual bills and any excess electricity can often be sold back to the grid, further offsetting costs.

By substituting grid demand with renewable solar power, solar installations markedly decrease the carbon footprint of a home which can be several tones annually. The Smart Export Guarantee compensates customers for surplus solar energy they send back to the grid. For instance, if a home generates 4kWh but only consumes 2kWh, they not only offset their energy bills but also receive payment for the remaining 2kWh of unused energy.

Bespoke premium Solar PV systems can be scaled to meet a wide range of energy needs, from small residential set-ups to large

commercial installations, with homes and businesses with solar PV systems often seeing an increase in property value due to the appeal of lower energy costs and environmental benefits.

A recent GreenGenUK 5.04kW Solar PV installation at Townshend represented a proactive step towards sustainable living and energy independence for the client who was highly complementary of the service they received: “The installation team were great, they were polite and very professional, answering any questions we had, were respectful of the property and did an excellent job. The system has all been working well since and we love the app to keep an eye on the figures. We would definitely recommend GreenGen to others.”

Ongoing improvements in solar technology continue to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and expand the potential applications of solar PV systems and, with government incentives, tax credits and rebates available, the adoption of a solar PV system is both attractive and affordable.

Seafood with a view

The Fern Pit Café, perched in an elevated position high up above the Gannel Estuary is something of north-coast icon. Established in 1910, and run by the same family for over 100 years, the café has always been famous for its seafood and its incredible views. This year, sees previous owners Gill and Gerald taking a well-earned rest, handing Pat and Avis Galvin the reins of their beloved eatery. Pat, Avis and their team are no strangers to the foodie scene running the popular seafood bar and grill, Catch in Mawgan Porth, and the newly founded Little Palm Kitchen at Atlantic Reach. Seafood doesn’t get fresher than at Fern Pit, with Gerald’s fishing boat moored on the waters below, from which he’ll still be supplying seafood to the café

The Fern Pit Café offers all-day dining; from coffee and cake, to lobster lunches,

amazing crab sandwiches and cream teas this is the perfect place to rest and refuel after a day on the beach. Or catch the ferry across from Crantock, climb the zig-zag path through tropical planting up to the café, and experience lunch with arguably some of the finest views in Cornwall. Crab and lobster has always been a highlight on the Fern Pit menu, and will continue to feature alongside Porthilly oysters and ‘fresh fish at five’ each day. Being both dog and family friendly, the Fern Pit Café is must-visit for any foodie this summer.

Located on the edge of St Ives Bay, if you’re looking for exceptional dog-friendly accommodation by the sea, then look no further than The Beachpads in Lelant. Spend your days playing in the waves, digging holes, chasing balls across the sand or enjoying one of countless nearby walks.

Three gorgeous properties offer the ultimate in family accommodation. They can be rented individually or together for up to 22 guests, with two properties enjoying their own hot tubs and one its own enclosed heated swimming pool! Nearby, golf enthusiasts will find a superb links course; water lovers can enjoy kayaking, kitesurfing, surf and SUP activities, and sea fishing can be enjoyed almost literally from the doorstep. The South West Coast Path nearby offers a walker’s paradise with endless miles to explore in either direction. Once home to iconic beach-scape artist, John Miller, with the area also a firm favourite of novelist Rosamunde Pilcher, who was known to love walking past the houses and who described the bay and its colours as “never the same… just perfect”, we can think of few better ways to hang your hat with your pooch in tow than at The Beachpads, Lelant. FLUSHING A trip to

For dog-friendly retreats made for making memories with the family, Falmouth Holiday Homes has you covered.

Nestled along the picturesque shores of the south coast of Cornwall, Flushing village embodies the quintessential charm of a traditional Cornish fishing community. With its colourful terraced houses, narrow winding streets, and panoramic views of the Fal Estuary, Flushing exudes an undeniable allure. The village's maritime heritage is palpable, reflected in the rhythmic ebb and flow of the tides and the bustling activity of the harbour, where fishing boats bob gently alongside sailboats and yachts.

Visitors can wander along the waterfront promenade, breathe in the salty sea air, and watch as seabirds swoop and dive over the sparkling waters. With its welcoming pubs like the newly established Harbour House, a dogfriendly beach all year round, and a general taste of Cornish life, Flushing invites visitors to slow down and savour the simple pleasures of coastal living.

Falmouth Holiday Homes’ collection of dog-friendly Flushing Holiday Cottages make a stay in the village a true Cornish getaway, and one such property is Boatwatch. Sleeping four, and just a few steps from the quayside, this stunning and beautifully presented village house is a waterside haven. The openplan living room enjoys amazing views of

Falmouth across the river, and with its own reserved parking space on the quay opposite, life couldn’t be easier.

Another delightful dog-friendly stay is offered at Stable Cottage. Sleeping four, and with an enclosed courtyard, parking and only a short stroll from the village, this pretty cottage exudes peaceful tranquillity as you look out over the river from the cosy sitting room. The Corner House, also sleeping four and newly refurbished with an open-plan living area, two en-suite bedrooms and a courtyard garden, sits in the heart of Flushing, its original features complemented by its modern finish.

For a larger group, The Paddock can offer accommodation for up to eight. Spacious and beautifully refurbished, this contemporary home boasts extensive river views from the expansive terraces and living areas, not to mention off-road parking for several cars.

Explore a quiet corner of Cornwall in style with man’s best friend at your side.

The Nare is a five-star country house hotel by the sea, situated on the Roseland Peninsula which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The hotel is surrounded by beautiful, unspoilt National Trust land and the South West Coast Path runs alongside the hotel gardens, offering instant access to some of Cornwall’s most beautiful coastal walks.

Below the hotel you’ll find Carne Beach; well off the beaten track and renowned for being quiet and unspoilt. It stretches from the iconic Nare Head to the east and as far as the eye can see towards the Lizard in the west. At low tide it joins the small but charming Pendower beach and forms over a mile of golden sand and a delightful selection of rock pools. It is often described as having all the exclusivity of a private island and dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year. During the summer season they should be kept on the lead on the beach during the daytime, though in the morning and evening and during the winter months they can run for miles across the sand.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome at The Nare, in the gardens and in the bedrooms.

There is a daily charge for all dogs checking into the hotel which includes dinner from a special dogs’ table d'hôte menu. As with all guests at The Nare, those with special dietary requirements and desires are well looked after whether on two legs of four. For the discerning canine, a dogs' à la carte menu has a wider choice. Everything has been thought of here; biodegradable dog bags are available from reception and dog bins are provided. The hotel has wellies for guests to use whilst at the hotel and there is a drying room for any wet clobber. The Nare really is a haven for dogs, but don’t just take our word for it, David Wickers recently commented in Good Housekeeping Magazine: “Overlooking a grand sweep of a beach, The Nare is a bastion of tradition yet also extremely family and dog friendly.”

A must-visit spot and beloved local gem, it proudly serves delicious Cornish fish in crispy batter and tasty chips made from premium Cornish potatoes. As a finalist in the 2023 National Fish & Chip Awards, its commitment to sustainability has earned it accolades. Whether grabbing a quick bite or enjoying a relaxed meal, diners will love the experience.

Chynhale Barns

If your dog could choose where to go on holiday, we think they would be highly likely to choose Chynhale Barns. With lovely secure gardens, zero restrictions on how many dogs you can bring and a fenced meadow that’s great for doggy playtime and picnics, it’s a pooch’s paradise. They haven’t forgotten the humans too, with the addition of an indoor heated swimming pool. With a specially designed canine menu as well as seasonal specials for you, it’s the ultimate shared dining experience. This includes tasty Sunday carveries for both humans and hounds to enjoy! At the bar, you’ll find a wide range of beverages to quench your thirst and not forgetting your companion, why not treat them to a doggie Pawsecco? Offering food from 12pm to 9pm, seven days a week, the Fox and Hounds really does take ‘dog friendly’ to a whole new level!

The Lemon Arms

Mylor is the perfect spot for a creekside walk, a tucked-away haven waiting to be explored. It’s ideal for nature lovers looking to stretch their legs while enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the area with their furry friend. One of our favourite strolls is from Mylor Bridge, along Mylor Creek and then around to Restronguet Weir and back. We recommend refuelling at the Lemon Arms afterwards. The team have a brilliant menu of pub classics, a daily specials board, local ales on tap and to top it all off, a dog-friendly beer garden for your sleepy hound to rest their legs!

Looking forward to the freshest catch this summer.

With the onset of summer, comes a lightness of ingredients and what I’m really excited about this year is the coming of the Atlantic Bluefin tuna season, where these majestic beasts are now fished from Cornish waters. What was once considered an endangered species has come back and is being seen in abundance around Cornwall. The rise in stock of bluefin tuna has been phenomenal, and so last year, DEFRA granted just ten licences to fishermen to line-catch bluefin tuna for the first time in decades – eight of which were granted to Cornish boats. We've had a lot of incredible sightings of tunas, breaching and chasing their prey all around the Cornwall coast and I’m really super-excited that my kitchens will have access to this amazing product. What could be better? It's sustainable because it’s line-caught cord and it really fits into my light and bright style of cooking.

Fine fishermen go out and line-catch these beasts of the sea, sometimes battling with them for a couple of hours trying to reel them in – some have reportedly been tipping the scale at an incredible 454 kilos! These really are substantial fish, usually coming in at up to 260 kilos, so I’m going to be looking at adding a tuna section to both of my restaurant’s menus, to allow me to use as much of the fish as possible, all while supporting the amazing fishermen who catch them. I feel that my duty as a Cornish chef and restaurant owner is to

try and buy as much tuna as I can to stop them having to travel too far. Diners can expect to see fresh tuna, tuna ceviche and some sesame crust tuna; as well as delicious tuna steaks and the ever-popular tuna salad. For me, it’s about showcasing a product that we are all superexcited and proud of.

It's really important that fresh tuna is looked after carefully as soon after it has been landed as possible, and in fact, it benefits from being aged as you would beef. The ideal temperature for ageing a fish is between 1-6 ˚C as any lower can cause ice crystals to form thus damaging the flesh of the fish, whilst any higher would cause the fish to rot. In Japan, tuna is usually aged for seven to ten days by the fishmonger before being sold to a restaurant. The restaurant can then continue to age the tuna for three to four days and up to a week if the tuna is extra fatty.

The cooking of tuna brings with it many traditions, all paying homage to this beautiful fish. In Japan, bluefin tuna head meat, also known as the 'Zumiko', is famous for its succulent texture, which has a great balance between flesh and fat and is wonderful seared on a barbecue. I’m going to pay my own culinary respects to our Cornish tuna and have some wacky ideas about utilising the whole fish; from the more muscular bits, which will have some chewy fibres, to the softer belly each piece will need to be utilised in the right way. The end result will be dishes that are so

fantastic and fresh from local waters – I’m hoping that this will be a true tuna education for all!

There is no doubt that the Japanese-style of preparing tuna works really well; we should take note of how the nation prepares their fish so beautifully, treating it with such respect. There’s perhaps nothing better than tuna sashimi, dipped in the best soy you get, accompanied with a little fresh grated wasabi and ginger on the side; or a simple, freshly diced tuna tartare is incredible too. Even though I love bluefin tuna fresh and uncooked, I still love a pure tuna steak that’s been cooked beautifully. Serve with a mix of chargrilled summer vegetables (asparagus is especially good with tuna) and a light summery dressing or you could build a Japanese-style salad with seared tuna.

Our Josper grill is perfect for searing tuna as it runs at 400˚C. Searing the tuna at this superhot heat gives it an instant smoky flavour while retaining a beautiful rare centre and as you let it rest the heat penetrates through the layers of flesh. Serve with a dressing of soy, yuzu or lemon and a drizzle of sesame oil.

I'm proud to offer bluefin tuna in my restaurants as the quality is just superb, and I'm so lucky to have such amazing ingredients on the doorstep.

1 kg piece of tuna loin (bluefin if possible), cut into rectangle shapes

80g white sesame seeds

80g black sesame seeds

Sea salt

Rapeseed oil for cooking

For the Dressing:

1 ripe mango, peeled and destoned

1 thumb of ginger, peeled and chopped

1 red chilli

3 lime, zest and juice

50ml fish sauce

50ml rice wine vinegar

30g palm sugar

30g coriander leaves, chopped

1 Start by making the salsa. Simply combine all the ingredients in a bowl, though I recommend not adding all the Jalapeno at once. Perhaps add half and check you're happy with the heat before adding anymore.

2 To make the dressing, add all the ingredients into a blender, except for the oil, and blend until smooth. Next, pour in the oils and mix to form an emulsion. The quantities here will make more than you need, so set aside the extra to use as salad dressing for another meal.

This dish offers a great way to enjoy it with very little cooking needed. To make this dish really sing, do your best to source bluefin tuna.

50ml toasted sesame oil

350ml rapeseed oil

Salt and white pepper

For the Salsa:

3 tomatoes, skinned, pulp removed, finely diced

1/3 cucumber, peeled, pulp removed, finely diced

½ red onion, finely diced

30g coriander, chopped

2 lime, zest and juice

1 green Jalapeno chilli, finely diced

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Garnish:

2 red chilli, sliced

50g coriander leaves

6 pink radishes, thinly sliced

3 Combine the sesame seeds and salt on a tray. Roll the tuna portions in the mix, shaking off any excess seeds and place on a plate ready to cook. Cook the portions in a frying pan on a medium heat with a little oil. You just want to colour the seeds slightly, then turn the portions over to cook briefly on the other side. About 40 seconds on each side is a good guide. When they are done, leave to rest for a couple of minutes.

4 To serve, slice the tuna and arrange onto plates. Drizzle the dressing in between the tuna slice then do the same with the salsa. Garnish with chilli, coriander and radishes.

THE SEASON Spirits to enliven

Summer seems to have finally arrived at the Rock Distillery, and it's embracing the spirit of the season by developing some fabulous new drinks

With the opening of four new fabulous shops, Rock Distillery have embarked on even more new products, offering a delightful combination of flavours to add to their extensive range of spirits. They have decided to venture into a new whiskey liqueur journey. All of the new offerings are based upon the splendour of their Rock Single Malt Whiskey, fermented and distilled using single pale malt and then matured in ex-French Red wine barrels at an ambient 21°C for three years. The resultant mix is then blended with Cornish spring water ensuring paramount smoothness and a full malty flavour.

Their Peanut Whiskey Liqueur is derived from this three-year-old single malt, distilled with peanuts. This amazing spirit can be served pre-dinner with a dish of salted peanuts on the side, or even a post-dinner liqueur. It has been effortlessly added to their gin and rum customers collection of Rock Cornish spirits and has quickly become one of their best sellers.

A Whiskey Sour Liqueur, derived from their single malt, boasts a zesty citrus sour blend of fresh lemons and pink grapefruit. This splendid spirit delivers a tantalizingly tangy kick, perfect as a pre-dinner pallet cleanser. For that special cocktail, it works well added to sparkling water or cloudy lemonade.

Next on the list, their Whiskey Warmer Liqueur is exactly that – a comfortingly smooth and gentle drink. Created from a

combination of their single malt whiskey, local honey and ginger it delivers a taste sensation whether medicinal or just because! This wonderful drink can brighten up any dull day.

To add to their spirit collection, they have also developed a superb new gin called Almond Air. Handcrafted and cut with Cornish spring water it has a wonderful lingering almond taste. So smooth and delicate that it could be sipped neat; otherwise, just use a very light tonic, or even better, top up with Champagne or Prosecco.

Why not go and visit them at the distillery in Wadebridge, where there is plenty of parking outside or at one of their stores in Tintagel, Bude and Padstow. They have full tasting stations in all locations. Their very welcoming and experienced staff will guide you through the complete Rock Distillery experience whether it is something to buy as a gift or for treating yourself.

Michelle Dash, Manager at RRL Cornwall, looks into online scams and how to spot them.

ith the UK’s ever-increasing use of online technology, scammers are becoming more problematic and scams are widespread. Although some scam emails, texts and phone calls are relatively easy to identify, there are also many which are sophisticated and look genuine, leading to many unsuspecting people falling foul.

Plenty of scam emails will bypass the spam settings in your email account, and scams can be hard to spot especially when you are expecting an email from an account purporting to be from a recognised establishment such as HMRC or Companies House.

As the UK has just started the new tax year for 2024/25, HMRC have been sending genuine emails to customers, as they are moving towards a more paperless approach.

Unfortunately, scammers are well aware of this, and are using it to their advantage in the

hope that their emails will be mistaken for the genuine HMRC correspondence.

HMRC will never ask for personal or financial information when they send text messages or emails, so if you receive notifications asking for such information you should assume they are scams. If you are due a tax repayment from HMRC, they will send this to the designated bank account details they hold for you (if this was provided on your tax return), or they will send a cheque.

HMRC will not contact you for your bank account information. Never click on a link in a text or an email which states it will take you to a website to claim your tax rebate.

If you have received correspondence from HMRC and you want to check it is genuine, you can visit your HMRC online account. Details of your current tax position will be shown there, and you will be able to view any repayments due to you. If you don’t have an online account, you can set one up quickly

Michelle Dash, Manager at RRL Cornwall

and securely at

As discussed in our previous article, Companies House has recently announced changes to UK company law, with the introduction of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act. This announcement has given scammers another opportunity to extract information from unsuspecting individuals, by feigning to be officers from Companies House and requesting information such as director’s personal information, identification, company authentication codes along with bank details.

As well as electronic scam attempts, letters are being sent in the post to the registered office of newly incorporated companies, asking for payment to complete the registration or to keep the details secure. Companies House fees for forming a new company will always be payable at the time of formation and any request for further payment should be treated as a scam. Companies House prices can be viewed at https://changestoukcompanylaw.

Companies House issue penalties for late filing of certain statutory documents, such as annual accounts. Companies House will not contact you by telephone for immediate payment of these penalties; even if you have incurred late filing penalties, do not trust these calls.

One of the most important things you can do to keep your company details secure and limit the threat of scammers is to keep the company authentication code secure and use the secure WebFiling system at Companies House for any changes and updates required. If you think the authentication code has been compromised, you can change this online through the WebFiling system.

It’s important to be as vigilant as possible with regards to phishing and scams, for individuals and companies alike. As well as the financial loss that can be incurred if bank details are shared or fraudulent payments made, identities can be stolen and used for illegal purposes. Taking a sceptical view and challenging correspondence is the best way to avoid falling victim to fraudsters. Don’t divulge information or make payment if you are contacted – delete the email or hang up the call, and contact Companies House or HMRC yourself by using your online accounts or verified telephone numbers.

Finding magic in the unexpected

Emily Penfold is a British multidisciplinary artist. Having graduated from Central Saint Martins, through her practise, Emily explores the fragility of life, celebrating its internal magic in all its forms.

Delving into the fragile dimensions of sea-life, Emily explores the delicacy of what lies beneath the surface. Inspired by this powerful force of nature, the infinite water of the sea evokes an unequivocal sense of both fear and calm. Something that can make you feel so fragile and alive all in one.

Jellyfish have the power to simultaneously instil wonder and fear – their sting being like an electric shock – a spark of nature’s energy. Her mesmerising work uses light and bold colours to highlight the hypnotic beauty of these translucent bundles of energy, bringing the magic of the sea into your home. Capturing the everchanging seascape

Working both within the landscape and in her studio, translating an immediately drawn response to the environment captured en plain air into a more considered reflection of place in the studio – for Imogen Bone one discipline influences the other. The energy captured in her drawings helps maintain a spirit of place in the paintings; and the skills honed in the studio allow them to work fluidly outside. She endeavours to keep freshness and freedom in her paintings but each one is underpinned with accurately delineated

realism. As Imogen says, “The visual language depicted through brushstrokes and drawn lines is constantly evolving and I feel is reflective of the changing coastline.”

Join Imogen Bone at Padstow Gallery from 20th July to 4th August for the latest release of original paintings exploring the Camel Estuary and surrounding area.

Sara hand-builds her pieces using locally dug clay to add an element of place and a connection to her pots. The inspiration for her work is the light and changing colours and textures of the sea, sand and rock formations found in the Cornish landscape.

Cornish Art Porthleven is open from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, with a mixed exhibition on display throughout June.

‘Will Away the Grey’ by Victoria Smith Vicky’s paintings are a search for balance; a stability of space and form fabricated by a process of layering and generating illusionary depth. Vertical and horizontal divisions are a common occurrence in her work. Relationships between interlocking forms, colours and lines inspired by her surrounding landscape are a strong influence. 01326 221778

Discover a unique way of remodelling your jewellery, with Justin Duance.

There's a tradition among jewellers: the art of remodelling old, forgotten treasures into something fresh and breathtaking. At Justin Duance Jewellery, recycled materials are not just embraced, but celebrated.

Imagine transforming your unworn or broken precious materials into stunning new creations. With a signature sandcasting technique, Justin Duance's skilled jewellers can work wonders. Picture molten gold poured into a mould crafted from the sands of your favourite beach to form a piece that can be set with your own sentimental gemstones. It’s a mesmerizing process that not only yields unique natural textures, it captures a tapestry of personal history and sentiment.

“People will often to come to us with jewellery that holds huge sentimental meaning,” Justin explains. “It might be a piece that has been inherited but isn’t to their taste, wedding rings that have worn too thin or become too tight – often pieces beyond repair or just ready for a change.”

But how does it work? Collect together the materials you have, and so long as it’s gold, the team can use it. Then start dreaming up your new piece of jewellery. Perhaps you already have something in mind, or the team

can guide you through what’s possible – you could take a look at the inspiring commissions gallery on the website. Once the design is set, the team will make a start on your new piece and in roughly four to eight weeks, your new jewellery will be complete.

 BEFORE Inherited heirloom rings

AFTER Contemporary pendant showcasing inherited topaz and diamonds

Justin’s ethos has always been to make jewellery that means something to the wearer. “There are so many ways of making your piece personal to you,” he continues. “We recently made a memorial ring for a beloved pet dog, the gold and gemstones were chosen to reflect his colourings and cast in a mixture of his ashes and sand from his pawprint from his favourite beach on his very last walk. Often, it’s as simple as carrying on a legacy of love through a wedding band made from grandparent’s rings.” They’ve made some amazing commissions from inherited cocktail rings too – often letting the materials guide the creative journey, resulting in truly captivating and bespoke commissions that resonate deeply with their owners.

Fifty years MAKING WAVES

Working in the heart of Cornwall’s communities, Young People Cornwall reach thousands of young people every year by building trusted relationships.

Established in 1974, Young People Cornwall has been committed to supporting young people, aged 8 to 25 across the region via a range of projects and essential support services. Its aims are to empower youth, provide a voice and foster a future that can fully embrace the opportunities that are out there, through tailored programmes and collaborative partnerships.

As the years rolled along, they saw Young People Cornwall go from strength to strength. In the 1990s, it established Hear Our Voice –the first project of its kind – allowing young people to have their say and influence mental health services. This incredibly successful project is just one of many. Young People Cornwall focuses on building long-term support, embedding itself into communities, and delivering dependable services.

The organisation understands what it takes to deliver youth work at its best, constantly finding new ways to innovate. From its main offices in St Austell, Young People Cornwall runs projects across the county, including education and training support, sports sessions, mental health support hubs, and drop-in youth clubs. Recognising that young people are the experts of their own lives, it tailors its projects to suit their needs and dreams. Young People Cornwall is committed to helping

young people facing ever-changing challenges such as unemployment, social exclusion, crime, homelessness, and mental health struggles. By creating opportunities, finding the right support, and maintaining regular check-ins, it ensures that no one faces these challenges alone.

As CEO, Nick Smith says, “Young People Cornwall has been dedicated to serving the youth of our community for half a century, and it’s thanks to your unwavering support that we’ve been able to make a positive impact on countless lives.”

Why not help Young People Cornwall toward its next anniversary by becoming a volunteer or donating. Your donation could pay for a hot meal at a youth club or go towards a new van to take young people on their first trip to the beach. Your money could provide essential training to keep our team adapting to needs in Cornwall.
