Welcome

From the Editor

to the latest edition of Cornwall Living!

This month, I've been selecting some of our favourite luxury stays across the Duchy. Whether you're looking for scenic beauty, coastal elegance, culinary delights, a relaxing spa experience or an out-ofthe-way bolthole where you can retreat from the pressures of every day life, Cornwall has it all. There truly is a plethora of amazing places to stay, where your shoulders drop and cares slip away from the moment you cross the threshold to that last lingering look behind you as you leave, having made memories that will last forever. From page 21 , join me as I showcase some amazing stays that will take your breath away.

This issue, we are also excited to bring a new supplement, Kids Love Cornwall Living , where we showcase family-friendly places to stay, days out that will keep your little ones happy, as well as activities that will bring a smile to any face. Take the Children's Sailing Trust for example ( page 61 ); with a host of watersports on offer at Trevassack Lake, you can try everything from dinghy sailing to paddleboarding, topped off with a treat from the waterside café. Or, for some Cornish culture, both the Museum of Cornish Life in Helston ( page 61 ) and the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro ( page 65 ) are great places to delve into the county's vibrant past as well as experiencing new and wonderful things in their latest exhibitions – what's more, they're free to children.

No issue of Cornwall Living would be complete without our monthly look at the Duchy's property for sale. This issue, we bring you an impressive home whose elevated position above Praa Sands beach gives the most exceptional views (page 33,) while a town house in Fowey ( page 35 ) has the benefit of being close to the bustling harbour while enjoying private terraces and a balcony with views over the water.

It's rare that there's an issue of Cornwall Living where we don't turn our thoughts to food and this is no exception. Jude Kereama, chef patron of Porthleven-based restaurants Kota and Kota Kai, talks all things grilling from page 46 as he introduces us to some exciting new kitchen kit which is bringing a taste of fire to his restaurant's new menus.

And finally, as we look ahead to our exciting 150th issue, we're already starting the celebrations with an incredible 'winner takes all' competition. Turn to page 76 to find out how you could be in with a chance of winning a whole host of incredible prizes – this is something you won't want to miss.

...happy reading!

Cornwall’s biggest annual event!

Ever since its inception in 1793, the Royal Cornwall Show has been showcasing and celebrating the very best in Cornish agriculture, supporting this industry to thrive and innovate for generations to come. With so much to do at the show, you may find yourself coming back on all three days just to see it all.

Cornish heritage and tradition will once again take centre stage through the Creative View Ltd Countryside Village, as well as the Rural Skills area, multiple local craft marquees and Cornish food and drink. There will be thousands of animals in attendance from cattle to cage birds and everything in between. Hundreds of classes will determine the annual winners and champions, with the opportunity to learn more about the animals and the environment around us, including the Rare Breeds exhibit and demonstrations from falcons to police dogs. From JCB

Dancing Diggers and RAF Falcon show to the Cornwall Airport Newquay Shetland Pony Grand National, there’s certainly something for all the family.

It is a foodie paradise at the Royal Cornwall Food & Farming Pavilion, with dozens of local food and drink producers from across the county ready for you to find your next favourite! The Idle Rocks launches: Reef Knot

Hannah Davies was born in Cambridge in 1980. After completing her art foundation there she moved permanently to Cornwall, where she studied for a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Falmouth College of Arts, graduating in 2002. She now lives and works in Bude and has been selected for this year’s Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing prize.

Exhibiting for the first time at Whitewater Contemporary from 29th June to 24th July, Hannah presents a new Featured Artist collection for summer. Hannah’s oil paintings explore the theme of reflections and are inspired by Cornish seascape and townscapes mirrored in cafe windows. Using transparent layers of oil paint, built up slowly so that each layer is visible on the canvas, she recreates the shimmering atmosphere of thrown light and the reflected images that surround us on a daily basis.

On a glass surface, inside and outside are merged, mixing private and public spaces, and producing strange and surprising combinations where coffee cups and seated figures float through sea and sky. Hannah’s dreamlike reflections draw the eye, mesmerising in their simultaneous sense of movement and calming stillness, an echo of something vital in between.

Alongside her paintings, Hannah’s particular love of drawing is shown in her Light Patches works, which explore the simple beauty of shards of sunlight thrown across a room, giving permanence in her drawing as a memory of a hazy impression, long forgotten.

For more information email art@ whitewatercontemporary.co.uk or visit www.whitewatercontemporary.co.uk

Celebrating the freshest of Cornish ingredients, Reef Knot at The Idle Rocks is unveiled as the hotel’s latest dining concept. Showcasing the freshest of local ingredients and daily caught fish, the seaside restaurant which overlooks St Mawes’ harbour will now be led by the culinary prowess of acclaimed Executive Head Chef Stuart Shaw.

Reef Knot will feature a curated menu of daily caught fish; local, seasonal produce; home-grown vegetables combined with an award-winning wine list; as well as an enticing cocktail menu. David Richards, Owner of The Idle Rocks, says: “Reef Knot is undoubtedly in the most capable hands. Chef Stuart’s menu and philosophy perfectly align with The Idle Rocks vision as a whole, providing an elegant yet relaxed take on quality hospitality and dining. Our shared commitment to working with local suppliers and embracing seasonal ingredients will ensure an extraordinary guest experience.”

Scarlet spa is wellknown for its eco credentials, inclusive of a bromine-filtered indoor pool, outdoor natural reed pool, clifftop cedar wood sauna and restorative outside steam room. Scarlet’s restaurant, run by Head Chef Jack Clayton, offers carefully curated dishes of seasonal food paired with sustainable, slow-aged wines. They are very proud of their

family heritage and that they have grown the business into what it is today. Wooda is unique in being one of the few independently owned holiday parks left, allowing it to retain a personal touch and the feeling of belonging. Wooda is family run, for families.

Tracing yourSTEPS

Travel bracelets that capture unique travel memories one step at a time.

It all started when friends Candace Kellough and Tom Lane where hiking between Barcelona and Monaco in 2013. They wanted to find a way of recording their adventures, and with the first drawings created in a tent near Sa Tuna, El Camino Bracelets was born – its name paying homage to the project’s Spanish roots. Returning to Tom’s home town in Oxfordshire, the first prototypes were made. Made by travellers, for travellers, wearers can choose from a handmade unisex bracelet, necklace or anklet which are then adorned with beads, or Steps as they are known at El Camino, each one a record of a treasured travel memory. Every El Camino is handmade in the UK from durable and sustainably sourced materials. Celebrating their ten-year anniversary, El Camino are proud that not only do they build products that last but also relationships. Many of their suppliers have been with them since day one, making the production process feel like working with family.

colours, with the option of adding hand-cut wooden spacers to your bespoke design. As each of our journeys are unique to ourselves, each bracelet becomes a bespoke record of a life well-travelled.

“An El Camino Bracelet can be cherished for years to come; a daily reminder of the amazing experiences you’ve shared with loved ones, milestones reached, and sparking inspiration for your next adventure,” explains Candace.

“Your El Camino can be a precious record of where you’ve been and reminder of where you’re going next. We can even custom make Steps to mark a special occasion or memory that’s personal to its owner.”

Prices start from £26.99 for bracelets and £34.99 for necklaces, with Steps from £10.49. To view the full El Camino range, don't forget to head to the website, or scan the QR code!

Wearers can now choose from several different colours of bracelet or necklace, adding Steps from over 200 different countries, countless destinations, regions, seas, adventures and the five world oceans. Steps are made from either surgical grade stainless steel, engraved and hand polished to perfection, or handmade glass in exquisite

The Cornish brand has raised over £20,000 for charities such as World Land Trust, Surfers Against Sewage and NHS charities with their range of Steps, often selling out thanks to their dedicated community of travel-lovers – and with one sold every ten minutes the El Camino community continues to grow apace across the world.

POTENTIAL OF SCIENCE Unlocking the

Discovering a ground-breaking treatment from MEDfacials designed to restore your skin's youthful vitality from within.

Under the guidance of Dr Joe Stolte and his expert team, MEDfacials stands as one of Cornwall’s premier clinics for aesthetic skin and hair care. Dr Stolte comments: “Our team of seasoned doctors and aesthetic practitioners deliver safe, targeted and efficacious treatments. From Juvederm seven-point face lifts, Profhilo, HArmonyCa, IPL, laser treatments and Tixel to hydrafacial treatments, Ultimate Pro Lipolysis, chemical peels, anti-wrinkle treatments, PDO thread lifts and various skin care procedures, we ensure our clients achieve the natural results they desire within a secure, professional clinic setting.

“It’s a scientifically proven fact that the human body naturally accumulates fat. However, its distribution is also influenced by genetics,” explains Dr. Stolte. “This means that despite exercise and a balanced diet, certain 'trouble spots’ such as jowls or prominent nasolabial folds can persist. While more prevalent in women, men can also face similar challenges.”

If you find yourself in this situation and are seeking a non-surgical solution, MEDfacials offers a new compelling answer as the first and only Endolift specialist in the South West. This treatment is a safe and effective non-surgical facelift treatment, targets problematic areas such as the lower face, neck and chin but can also target thighs, waist, stomach and knees. Combining internal microfibre laser treatments with other non-surgical treatments, this treatment

delivers visible results after just one session, granting you the transformative outcome you’ve perhaps long desired.

Endolift harnesses the power of cutting-edge technology to target deep layers of the skin, delivering remarkable results with minimal downtime. Unlike traditional treatments, Endolift stimulates collagen production at its source, promoting natural firmness and elasticity for a radiant complexion that defies age. Safe and effective, Endolift is FDAapproved and clinically proven to deliver exceptional results.

MEDfacial’s expert practitioners tailor each Endolift session to your unique skin concerns and goals, ensuring personalised care and optimal outcomes. With its gentle yet powerful approach, Endolift offers a comfortable treatment experience with visible improvements that speak for themselves. If you’re ready to embark on a journey towards radiant, youthful skin, then schedule an Endolift consultation today at MEDfacials. Discover the difference and unveil a new chapter in your beauty regimen.

TWith some exciting new additions to an already fabulous collection, Rock Distillery is starting summer off with a bang.

he season is really kicking in for Rock Distillery, with it’s latest shop in Padstow now complete in its refurbishment and open for business. Padstow is a fantastic place to shop being full of independent shops, all uniquely friendly and the Rock Distillery staff love working there.

To celebrate the opening of the Padstow shop, the team have landed two fabulous new gins: Sublime Lime with a hint of mint which makes an amazing gin-based mojito, and the Almond Air, a really delicate gin that is so smooth it can be sipped neat, whilst also amazing with a light tonic, still delivering that wonderful lingering almond taste.

“Last year we introduced some new, truly Cornish Spirits for our Tintagel shop,” says Angie, co-owner with husband George, “and they’ve been so popular that we now stock them in Bude, Wadebridge and Padstow.”

It all started with the Sir Galahad gin, Rock Distillery’s Classic Rock gin. “To go with this,” Angie continues, “we produced Lancelot of the Bluewater, our Blue Angel Rock gin. Then Pendragon Pink, our Pink Rock gin. Finally, Merlin’s Magic Marmalade, our Orange Sunset gin.”

In keeping with these, the team designed a range of rums to fit the Camelot theme, the next offering was Holy Grail, the dark spiced pineapple rum, followed by Camelot Coconut Paradise, the Rock coconut rum. Next came the Sir Percival Plum, the amazing Rock Perfect Plum rum, and finally, the Vanilla Knights, Rock Distillery’s Vanilla Rum.

“Alongside this,” Angie explains, “we developed a series of Cornish folklore gins, starting with The Dragon on the Mount, which contains our Rock Blue Angel gin, followed by the Mermaid of Zennor, which contains Rock Mellow Yellow gin. Next came the Spaniards and the Obby Oss, containing our Rock Cherry Kiss gin, and finally we made St. Petroc the Serpent and the Dragon, which contains our Rock Classic Gin. We are currently working on some new liqueurs to join our growing range of colourful and exotic Cornish Spirits, so watch this space.”

The experienced sales staff at Rock Distillery are dedicated to providing you with unparalleled service, ensuring that your visit is both informative and enjoyable. Whether you're a seasoned gin, rum or whiskey enthusiast, or new to the world of spirits, the welcoming team are there to guide you through the extensive range of products. Additionally, the shops boast full tasting stations, allowing you to immerse yourself in the complete Rock Distillery tasting experience within a relaxed and friendly environment.

FOOD from flame

A collaboration with Josper brings a taste of fire to Kota Kai’s new menu.

As I am half Chinese/Malay and half Mãori, cooking on fire is perfect for the Asian dishes that I am heavily influenced by. I draw on the whole of the South East Asian countries for inspiration for new dishes so when I had the opportunity to have a Josper grill in Kota’s new kitchen, I jumped at the chance.

Josper is one of the leading pieces of charcoal cooking equipment in the hospitality industry. It is essentially a charcoal oven that reaches temperatures of up to 400°C, giving food a distinct charred and caramelised flavour. Although it is very hot inside, the outside is cool to the touch as it is so well insulated. We’ve been getting on so well with it that we’re now looking at getting Josper’s Basque Grill as well. This charcoal open grill has a winch to move the grill closer or further away from the hot coals we will cook on. The grills are real centre pieces in our open kitchen where diners

can see the fire and flames from us cooking, as well as smelling the food coming from the grills.

The Josper Grill brings that really fantastic smoky flavour you get from barbequed food, adding that extra layer we’ve been after. We use it for cooking lots of different types of meats, seafood and vegetables, and it can also be used for cold smoking. The new Kota Kai menu was written around the Josper Grill, and the charcoal flavours have allowed us to cook beef with Asian green sauce; a grilled Thai chicken dish called Gail Yang; crispy pork belly called pork char siu; grilled fish with curry mussel leek sauce; grilled scallops with XO sauce; and other heavily Asian influenced dishes that really suit being cooked over coals.

This summer will see a lot of other grilled items coming on such as lobster, whole fish, squid, octopus, and a hot-grilled seafood plate... mackerel will be fantastic on it too.

46 | CORNWALL-LIVING.CO.UK
FOODIE

We’ll also be serving hot-grilled peaches and apricots with vanilla ice cream and raspberries that will surely be a hit in the summer weather. We’re busy designing even more new dishes and have been really pleased by the feedback so far from our new menu concept; there are very exciting times ahead.

The Josper grill installation was part of Kota Kai’s big revamp that we undertook earlier this year. Along with the kitchen, the bar benefited from a completely new installation designed around functionality. This has allowed us to hone our cocktail offering, and we have been working with Chris Jarrett who, along with my team, has designed some brilliant cocktails that really suit what we are doing at Kai. A great seasonal wine list and plenty of local beers and ciders have also been well thought out. In addition, we have a little bar being built downstairs just in time for the summer that will service the outside area.

It’s not been all about Kai though… Kota has also had a kitchen revamp. We have invested in induction cooking that has given us more firepower than we have ever had as we look to build on what we established 18 years ago when I first opened Kota in 2006. Kota saw a change last year with the return of

one of my old chefs Ross Sloan, and we now offer seven-course tasting menus alongside an à la carte version. Our produce remains local where possible and is sourced completely seasonally from the best suppliers we can find. We are continually looking at achieving as little wastage as possible, with every trim of vegetable, meat or fish put into a stock, purée, powder, fermentation or sauce of some kind. It has been really fantastic to see how Kota has developed over the years and I’m very proud of the continued respect we have for our produce.

We are all excited for the year ahead, and especially for the end of 2024 when we get to give Kota her very own revamp, which will include a three-bedroom apartment to add to our existing three bed and breakfast rooms. After 18 years, I think it is going to be a welcome change and shows that there is always something driving us to the next level.

Indulge in an elegant high-tea in a place where legendary history meets refined tradition.

Camelot Castle provides guests with an opportunity to unwind in accommodations akin to those found in settings like Downton Abbey. Here, visitors can bask in the historical ambiance and marvel at the breathtaking coastal panoramas offered by the castle’s clifftop perch. Additionally, guests can spend their days exploring the local area, delving into Arthurian lore with a visit to the renowned Tintagel Castle, believed to be the birthplace of King Arthur.

However, Camelot Castle is not just a haven for overnight stays. It's also a culinary destination, boasting three venues for dining. Irina’s Restaurant offers superb cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients, with both formal dining indoors and al-fresco options available on the Camelot Castle Hotel terrace. Guests seeking pre or post-dinner drinks can relax at The Golden Age Bar, while those visiting during the day can indulge in Afternoon Tea at The Explorer’s Tea Room.

Here, guests can savour one of the most luxurious afternoon tea experiences in Cornwall, set amidst the county’s stunning landscapes. A stroll along the Cornish coastline

Inspired by the wild cliffs and the ever-changing relationship between land and sea, Mike Hindle’s paintings reflect his passion for the Cornish coastline. From calm sandy beaches to sheer cliff faces, hot summer sunshine to gale-force winter storms, “I love to be out there,” he explains, “in the wild.” Often taking walks along Gwithian beach near Godrevy Lighthouse where the vast long beach of St Ives Bay stretches in a gentle curve, this is

where Mike goes for calm, peace and reflection: “Each day the sky changes, offering a new experience with every visit. I hope to convey something of that feeling in my paintings.”

‘Fresh Breeze Kynance’ is available as a signed limited-edition print. To view Mike’s work, make sure to pay him a visit at Studio Gallery, Mount Pleasant Eco Park, TR4 8HL.

An appreciation for detail

In the biggest gathering of his work to date, Jamie Medlin – Nuances of Light premiered for a private preview of the Falmouth Art Gallery exhibition on 19th April, and the collection certainly left an impression on those in attendance.

In a retrospective that has sampled some of his best pieces, kindly loaned by clients from all over the country, this showcase celebrates a career in maritime art spanning 38 years. Specialising in photorealistic oil paintings of

Cornwall’s seascapes and yachts, Jamie takes inspiration from nature and the array of stunning views in the Duchy.

The level of detail that goes into each piece is astonishing, and can only be truly appreciated up close in a setting like this. Jamie Medlin –Nuances of Light will be running at Falmouth Art Gallery until 29th June.

STARTA fresh

Providing essential support to struggling families with young children across Cornwall, Home-Start Kernow needs our help.

Although Cornwall is a beautiful and much-visited county, there are huge areas of deprivation and it is one of the poorest areas in Europe. With a booming tourist industry and breathtaking landscapes, it is sometimes hard to imagine anything but an idyllic life here. Yet, low wages, seasonal employment, lack of housing and high rentals are driving economic deprivation in parts of our county, with one in five children in Cornwall living in poverty.

Home-Start Kernow works with families who are literally making a choice to heat their home or to put food on the table, and they believe that no family should have to live this way. The rising cost of living is putting families who were already struggling with their mental health under immense strain and Home-Start Kernow wants to be there to help them.

The charity works to ensure that families in Cornwall, with a child under five, have access to the support they need to give their child the best possible start in life. Whatever the challenge, they want to empower families to overcome their challenges and find joy in their parenting relationship. Help is given through one-to-one home-visits where a trained volunteer is 'matched' with a local family

to support them on a weekly basis. As well as one-to-one support, Home-Start Kernow also has a county-wide group offer where families can attend a weekly group where they have the opportunity to meet friends, grow in confidence and access communitybased support, as well as referrals to other organisations as needed.

Home-Start Kernow’s work creates opportunities for parents to work alongside each other and offers peer-to-peer support on the parenting journey, so reducing isolation, improving mental health and creating better outcomes for children across Cornwall.

One family said: “It doesn't matter what your background is, parenting is hard. My volunteer listens to me lets me share my story and helps me to unload a mental burden that I carry. I will be forever grateful for HomeStart Kernow and what they have provided for me and my children.”

Help is free to families who need it and it’s Home-Start Kernow’s intention that this support always remains accessible and cost free.

We discover a country house hotel by the sea that takes seaside splendour to the next level.

If you’re looking for the ultimate in accommodation, with incredible views out across the bay, then we highly recommend a stay at The Nare. Family owned, and with hospitality at its heart, nothing is too much trouble here. You would be forgiven for not wanting to the leave the opulent comfort of the hotel; however, with a veritable ocean playground on your doorstep we would highly recommend you venture forth.

Family fun

The Nare welcomes family with open arms and what could be better than spending long lazy days on the sand. Take a safe and sheltered sea swim, or a barefoot beach amble, before settling down for an al-fresco picnic. Summer is a splendid time to enjoy the south coast of Cornwall, with its own unique microclimate that is more akin to the Med than the UK. This summer, The Nare has some great bespoke family-friendly activities to enjoy, suitable for all generations. The reservations team are delighted to curate these for guests, ensuring a memorable family holiday for your whole family.

Beach retreat

The Nare has its very own stretch of sand, Carne Beach, which is one of Cornwall's best-kept secrets. At high tide it's a wonderful place for a swim, where at low tide a mile of

golden sand is revealed for safe bathing. There are some fantastic rock pools to explore and plenty of space for a game of beach volleyball or cricket; or just some good old-fashioned sandcastle building. The beach is easily accessible from the hotel and a great place to while away a summer's day. Enjoy a stroll along the water's edge, with your eyes to the horizon, and who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of a dolphin or visiting seals.

Poolside relaxation

The Nare ‘s private outdoor pool is surrounded by sun loungers and enjoys fantastic views across the gardens, the beach and out to sea. The outdoor pool is open between May and October and is heated to a warm 30°C. The outdoor hot tub sits in the shelter of a beach hut overlooking the sea, where you relax and watch the sun go down over Nare Head. The indoor pool has its own jet stream for ambitious swimmers and a hot hydrotherapy spa, sauna and steam room for complete relaxation.

STANDING together

With

an auction coming up on 8th June, Rock Raises for Cancer are determined to put up a good fight.

In response to the cancer diagnoses of two close friends, Tracey Coombs, a local entrepreneur, and Shelagh Prudhoe, were motivated to establish a tangible way for the community to demonstrate solidarity with those facing cancer. Thus, Rock Raises for Cancer was conceived.

While initially started in 2019, the onset of the global pandemic delayed the original fundraising initiative. Presently, the community is more determined than ever to raise funds for three cancer-focused charities: Breast Cancer Awareness, Leukaemia UK, and the Children’s Hospice South-West. Residents, vacationers, and second homeowners alike are encouraged to participate in a summer online auction, leading up to a Gala Fundraising event at The Point, Polzeath, on June 8th. Supported by three local sponsors—John Bray Estates, Lucy Orr Interiors, and Quay 4—and the generous contributions of individuals and other local businesses, the auction boasts an impressive array of items. Highlights include a flight experience in Cornwall, original artwork by

Jethro Jackson and other local artists, a stay in an Indonesian villa with staff for 12, a Prawn on the Lawn voucher, signed books, Jo Downs glassware, and more. All are welcome to bid via QR code or by visiting app.galabid.com/ rockr4c/items.

Furthermore, Rock Raises for Cancer merchandise, such as T-Shirts and locally commissioned tea towels featuring historic Rock, can be purchased at Quay 4, starting at £10. The committee envisions these fundraising endeavours as the beginning of an annual series of events benefitting various cancer charities nominated by the community.

This year’s fundraising initiatives offer a chance for everyone to contribute to national research and treatment programs, while also providing crucial support to the local Children’s Hospice, which assists young individuals with life-limiting conditions.
