In just a couple of hours by car you too could be enjoying everything this beautiful county has to offer. ur fast-paced lives often mean that we have little or no ‘me-time’ – no opportunity to just sit and ‘do nothing’, no chance to unplug from technology, unwind from work or take a break from looking after the family and home. ith a by-line: “beautiful buildings that don’t cost the earth,” the ARCO2 Architecture team emphasise that their projects are both cost effective and environmentally aware. Director Ian Armstrong tells us: “ARCO2 don’t just build you a dwelling or o ce, we create homes with beneﬁts to enhance your lifestyle – literally building homes for future generations.” This building approach is evident in the creation of ‘Mellalue’, an outstanding coastal property designed and built by ARCO2’s inhouse construction company. When creating and building this remarkable property, the ARCO2 team worked closely with their client to achieve their vision to the highest possible standard, whilst also taking into consideration the impact on the surrounding environment and neighbours. Ian continues: “as a RIBA Chartered Architects Practice we have a unique, innovative and human approach to design which is evident in this stunning house.” The new dwelling replaces a mid-20th century bungalow, which was of little architectural merit and didn’t make the most of the beautiful site. ARCO2 stepped in and with a brief from the client to construct a low

energy, contemporary home that could accommodate a family with teenagers and elderly parents, the team made moves to construct this impressive property. Creating the perfect home is so important to people and I love helping customers to realise their dreams, giving advice on performance and e ciency of products as well as their aesthetics.” Indeed, having been actively involved in everything from surveying and sales, installation to aftercare, he’s well placed to help you make the right choice for your home, both in terms of functionality and design. This broad ranging experience also means that Daniel is on the pulse with the latest trends. “Over the last couple of years, we’ve definitely seen a rise in the popularity of orangeries,” says Daniel. “Recently, we’ve been working on a lovely orangery in Chilsworthy, in a very traditional design. Then another project is right at the other end of the spectrum with a really contemporary design. tishoo Gallery is located in the historic village of Charlestown on Cornwall’s south coast. Just up the hill from the harbour, the gallery can be found in a beautiful courtyard of cottage gardens opposite the old Methodist Chapel. As well as fabulous art, there’s also a fantastic selection of home accessories and giftware, all designed and made in the UK. We take a closer look at some of the artists whose work is featured in the gallery. Artwork by David Axtell and Kit Johns sits alongside glassware by Margaret Johnson and jewellery by Julie Fountain. Painter David Axtell captures life on Cornwall’s beaches in his stunning oil paintings depicting family scenes and ocean moments. David has been an illustrator for over 15 years and in that time has worked for a variety of publishers including: Random House, Harper Collins and Macmillan. Also a painter, Kit Johns brings a fresh and contemporary twist to Cornish landscape art from his studio on The Lizard. His work explores the wild and untamed nature of Cornwall’s landscape, using a variety of techniques and mediums such as canvas, paper and wood. Designer Margaret Johnson uses an extraordinary technique involving straw silk fibres to create her beautiful glass bowls, vases and wall art. Each is delicately finished with precious metal leaf. Having studied fine art and sculpture and taught for a number of years, she now works from her studio in Bude. Similarly, Julie Fountain, founder of Beach Art Glass, creates stunning and unique jewellery inspired by the ocean. Her delicate glass beads are made using a flamework technique, where colourful Italian glass rods are melted down and then shaped in flames to produce intricate and beautiful jewellery. Owners Liz and Paul showcase a wonderful array of artwork in their colourful and inviting gallery. The artists before mentioned are just a small excerpt from the medley of creators and makers whose work is on display. So, make sure to tie in an amble around the picturesque port of Charlestown with a visit to this beautiful gallery, and discover the talents of these innovative artists.

As part of the festivities, you can enjoy live music, cookery demonstrations, craft stalls, food and, of course, a taste of the Fal Oyster itself. If you’re staying in Falmouth you have to go to the beach Fortunately, ylly beach is just ﬁve minutes away. Also near St Austell are The Lost Gardens of Heligan (www. heligan.com) which, having been lost for decades after the outbreak of the First World War, were brought back to life more than 70 years later. Closer to Falmouth – just a boat ride away if you so choose – you’ll ﬁnd Trebah arden (www. trebahgarden.co.uk), a true verdant paradise on the edge of the river Helford.

If lacing up your boots and just being in the fresh air appeals to you, then you’re in the right place. Cornwall is home to countless beautiful walks, both inland and on the coast, but it’s arguably along the coast path that walking in the Duchy really comes into its own. The Cornish stretch of the 630-mile South West Coast Path is one of the most diverse, with rugged cliffs, waterfalls and staggering views over the Atlantic and the horizon beyond. One of our favourite walks involves a trip to the Lizard and the UK’s most southerly point. Here you’re in with a chance of spotting an abundance of wildlife, including seals, dolphins, porpoises, and a plethora of birdlife, including the iconic Cornish chough. Round the day off with a bite to eat in one of the restaurants and cafés in the Lizard village, or pop into the local pasty shop before your stroll and pick up a proper Cornish picnic!

If you’d like to take the helm and feel the spray of the ocean further out to sea, you can hire a boat and make the most of the Carrick Roads, some of the K’s ﬁnest sailing waters just off of Falmouth. Or, if sailing isn’t your thing, why not book yourselves onto a sea safari? Based in the heart of Falmouth, AK Wildlife Cruises (www.akwildlifecruises. co.uk) offers daily trips exploring the local coastline, as well as cruises up the river Fal and Helford, and skipper Keith Leeves loves sharing his knowledge about the local fauna.

While very busy during the summer months, the tidal beach of Kynance Cove is famed for its white sand, opalescent waters and iconic rock stacks. As the kids go back to school it once again quietens down and makes for a wonderfully windswept pit stop on your day spent exploring the Lizard. When you’re done, why not head down the coast to the picturesque ﬁshing village, Porthleven? The bedrooms are calm, uncluttered and understated but with some arresting and endearing touches – one has a candle lit fireplace in the bedroom while another has a starlight canopy above the bed. Raise a glass We celebrate the achievements of artisan gin distillers, Curio, this Christmas.

urio Spirits, Cornwall’s artisan distillers, have good reason to be raising their glasses this Christmas. First and foremost, they have recently added another salubrious tipple to the already award-winning Curio range, sourcing blueberries from a former Cornish monastery. This refreshing gin is full of Cornish goodness, a worthy addition to the already popular Curio Rock Samphire (renamed Curio Wild Coast Gin) and Curio Cardamom Vodka ranges. From the distillery that dares to be different, Curio Blueberry is an inspiring addition. We hear from Curio Alchemist and Head Distiller William Tyler-Street, who tells us: “This is a soothing gin with a pleasing personality and depth of flavour designed to be sipped neat or enjoyed with tonic.” Keeping to the Curio ethos of sourcing botanicals locally, the blueberries are taken from Bonallack, just a few miles inland from the coastal distillery. Bonallack is situated on the upper reaches of the Helford river, on the site of a Bronze Age settlement. A Time Team dig here discovered remains from the 12th century, including evidence of the cultivation of berries and other vaccinium. So it appears that at Bonallack, Curio was certainly not the first to appreciate the taste and medicinal properties of blueberries and other botanicals! Blueberries contain anthocyanin that gives them their blue colour and health benefits – they help heart health, bone strength, blood pressure, diabetes management, cancer prevention and mental wellbeing. Along with the new gin, the original Curio Rock Samphire Gin has been renamed Curio Wild Coast in to reflect the coastal location of the distillery, as well as nodding towards the ethos of hand foraging rock samphire and seaweed from the local clifftops. Curio Director and Partner Rubina Tyler-Street explains: “As the coastline played such an important part in the creation of Curio, we felt that we should acknowledge that in the name of the gin.” Also new for 2018 are the new bottles for the Curio range – made from recycled glass – which make Curio the only completely recycled gin bottle in Cornwall and one of only a few in the UK!

We visit award-winning restaurant, Rastella, and discover city-style dining on the Cornish coast.

ow, don’t get me wrong, Cornwall has some exceptional restaurants but the very nature of our seaside location means that while food is first class, the ambience is often laid back. While heading to dinner straight from the beach in shorts and flip flops obviously has its appeal, sometimes something a little more chic is the order of the day. We’d heard many good things about Rastella, the restaurant at Merchants Manor in Falmouth, not least of which is its recently awarded and highly coveted third AA Rosette – one of only four restaurants in Cornwall to boast this accolade. Chef Patron, Hylton Espey, was born and raised in South Africa. It was Merchants Manor’s devotion to using the finest, fresh local ingredients, an ethos that matches Hylton’s own, along with a love of the sea that drew him to Falmouth and Rastella. It has proved to be a match made in heaven. On arrival you can’t fail to be bowled over by the grandeur of the building – the ivy-clad doorway heralds an opulent interior where sparkling chandeliers light up the traditional entrance hall. We’re escorted to the bar where we are greeted with a delicious glass of Cornish vineyard Trevibben Mill’s Blanc De Blancs 2014. As we let the fine bubbles caress our mouths we get a

chance to peruse the evening’s tasting menu – a showcase of Hylton’s finest dishes. The bar and dining room rival the very finest of London restaurants when it comes to style and ambience. The tables are adorned with crisp linen and the cutlery shimmers in the evening light as we are shown to our table. Chef Hylton joins us to introduce our first course – Game Bird – pheasant, reared on the nearby Roseland, served with puffed heritage grains and a plum caramel. The richness of the fowl is cut through beautifully with the sweet, but slightly acidic plum caramel. It’s paired perfectly with a glass of Trevibben Mill Harlyn, an off-dry white that has flavours of watermelon and honey. We learn that Hylton takes daily foraging trips along the coast to pick fresh sea vegetables for his outstanding dishes. The kitchen team works to the simple ethos of ‘what grows together, goes together’ and nowhere is that more apparent than in tonight’s main dish. the intriguingly named Trewithick Pastures. Hylton is on hand to explain that the lamb he’s about to serve comes from a farm nearby, where the lambs graze on fields overlooking the sea above Porthleven. This lamb combines perfectly with fresh, local crab and a foraged vegetable selection of rock samphire and sea aster. Even part of the lamb in the dish is roasted with hay from the very farm from whence it came. Everything is cooked to perfection and is served with Hylton’s signature B.O.F.G.A – a burnt onion fermented garlic aioli. We are treated to a Black Ram Red, again from Trevibben Mill, to drink with our lamb. Hints of aromatic herbs, leather and vanilla, along with spicy top notes of clove and liquorice, are a fitting accompaniment. It’s no

doubt that Hylton’s attention to detail and superb skill in all areas are what won him the three AA Rosettes and he proves that his talent goes beyond the savoury. Dessert is perfectly formed and perfectly named for the time of year – autumn. Perhaps best described as a ‘deconstructed pumpkin pie’ we are treated to a swathe of sweet and gently spiced pumpkin along with a chai sorbet and crisp ginger fairing crumbs, topped off with a gently sparkling dessert wine courtesy of a Fontanafredda Asti. Light and delicious, this ends a meal that has been very special in many ways. Although part of the hotel, Rastella feels very much like a standalone restaurant, and has a chic and stylish identity of its own. The service throughout the meal was unobtrusive, yet impeccable and the wine choice a triumph. We resolve that this is a dining room we will return to for many a special occasion or celebratory dinner.

Holiday lets have specific tax arrangements that you need to be aware of and can even benefit from. In particular, furnished holiday lets FHLs benefit from specific tax rules. To qualify as an FHL, your property must be within the K, be furnished su ciently for occupation by guests and be intended to generate a profit. What cost considerations do you need to bear in mind if you own a holiday home in Cornwall? With buying Cornish property comes the associated mortgage, survey, stamp duty and solicitors’ fees that need to be factored into your budget. Buildings and contents insurance, and public liability cover are worth having as this covers you in the event of guests injuring themselves in your

hat’s right Scilly Flowers have finally managed to stop using single use plastic sleeves, and their boxes of scented flowers are almost completely plastic free oe tells us Obviously the flowers and foliage have always been biodegradable, but now our packaging, apart from a few elastic bands and flower food sachets, is paper or card. Reducing plastic has been on Scilly Flowers’ radar for some time, but spurred on by the BBC’s Blue Planet, the team set about developing a solution to the problem. oe continues We first started thinking about this six years ago. We investigated biodegradable plastic flower sleeves but, unconvinced by their environmental credentials, we didn’t feel they were the solution for us. We admit we were a little transfixed on replacing our plastic sleeves with similar, but then the light-bulb moment struck – did we really need sleeves? The sleeves performed two functions – protecting the flowers and presenting them nicely in the box. Our Operations Manager, Neil, came up with the brainwave of wrapping the flowers like burritos – food is never far from his mind The burrito idea had the potential to protect and present the flowers well, so we set about developing it. Over the course of that summer oe, Neil and the team spent a lot of time coming up with

a design that the packing team could work with e ciently and that would be suitable for different sized boxes, and with flowers that have different thicknesses of stems. It included a lot of measuring, cutting, sticking and, as oe puts it, head scratching. My particular favourite was a morning in the middle of summer spent trying to replicate different thicknesses of narcissi with bundles of kebab sticks and drinking straws As well as the main flower packaging, Scilly Flowers have also ditched the ribbons they were using around their flowers. Although it didn’t look it, oe says It was plastic. As a business we have always tried to farm and operate in an environmentally responsible way. We aren’t perfect, but we will always strive to improve. he record-breaking heat this summer meant that more tourists than ever flocked to Cornwall’s coast to seek refuge by the crystal clear waters and sandy beaches of our stunning coastline. However, the influx of people has also meant that the Cornwall Air Ambulance has experienced one of its busiest years to date. New figures reveal that from anuary to August, Cornwall Air Ambulance flew missions compared with emergency missions during the same period in . The critical care car has been on callouts so far this year and the crew have attended medical incidents and dealt with 3 trauma-related injuries. And in the peak visitor months of uly and August 8, missions increased by nearly compared to the same months in . As many tourists aren’t as surf savvy as us locals, or as used to driving along the narrow lanes, the unfortunate reality is that more accidents happen and while four out of five patients are local people, one fifth of the charity’s work is to help seriously sick and injured tourists. Last year, more than of airlifted patients were tourists, yet

less than of donations to the charity came from the tourism sector. Cornwall Air Ambulance Chief Executive, Paula Martin tells us The pressure on Cornwall Air Ambulance to deal with serious incidents has increased signiﬁcantly this year. Meeting this additional cost, at the same time the charity is trying to save for a new generation air ambulance and urgently needs your support if they are to succeed. The lifesaving charity, which relies on donations to ﬂy, predicts that the end of the year total will be around 8 helicopter missions, with a further emergency responses carried out in the critical care cars. Subsequently, in order to help cover the costs of the extra missions, the charity is appealing for more support and is therefore launching a campaign to generate more donations through the tourism sector.
