Summer is the time when Cornwall really comes alive – every village and harbour bustling with activity, boats coming and going, and the sound of splashing and laughter in the air. And we’ve been lucky to enjoy some beautifully sunny days here at our base in Porthleven, even spotting a pod of dolphins off the coast! With rugged moorlands, miles of iconic coastline, crystal clear waters, and grand country houses, it’s really no surprise that Cornwall is a popular location for film and television. You’ll often see film crews out and about across the Duchy, using the landscape as the backdrop for the latest screen adaptation of a much-loved classic. So in this issue, we take a look at some of the wonderful locations caught on camera. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Jo Midwinter, an inspiring woman who gave up her career and relocated to the Camel estuary to follow her dream of becoming an awardwinning garden designer. Her fascinating story shows that anything is possible if you put your heart in it! We also paid a visit to the Lizard Lifeboat Station to discover more about the everyday heroes of the RNLI, risking their lives to keep our waters safe. As usual, we showcase a range a stunning waterside properties currently on sale through Savills, highlighting the beautiful homes on offer in the south west. ardly a month goes by when someone isn’t filming something in Cornwall. With its stunning coastline, from the rugged north coast beloved by Poldark, with dashing young men on galloping horses and gorgeous windswept heroines, to the sheltered calm of quiet coves and estuaries fit for Daphne Du Maurier and Rosamunde Pilcher. Cornwall just about has it all, including the weather – we have calm hot sunny days with clear blue skies and storm lashed landscapes with huge waves and threatening, dark brooding clouds, and just about everything in between… and all in the same week! Whatever the weather or location; Cornwall looks good on screen and is a much loved location for TV series, documentaries and blockbuster movies. Film crews of all shapes and sizes are made welcome in the Duchy and agencies like Visit Cornwall and

Cornwall Council are happy to lend a hand by suggesting the perfect film location or helping to arrange filming permission. And why? Because the film business brings lots of money into Cornwall, from the filming itself to the tourists who come to follow in the footsteps of a much loved character or author. From the Doc Martin effect in Port Isaac (aka Portwenn in the popular series), to the much-lauded new Poldark series: from zombies in Falmouth with Brad Pitt, to Maggie Smith and Dame Judi Dench filming Ladies in Lavender in Cadgwith, or Wycliffe filming the thought-provoking detective series down on the Lizard; Cornwall makes a stunning backdrop and there is a real value to the local economy. twenty years German company, ZDF films have made over 100 films of her books with more in the pipeline, and they are watched by around six million viewers each time. Many of whom then visit Cornwall to see their favourite locations. The stunning Elizabethan manor, Prideaux Place, on the beautiful North Cornish coast, has been the location for fourteen of her stories and is now a mecca for visitors from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Owner Peter Prideaux-Brune always likes to take a cameo role in the films shot at his home – his credits so far include a chauffeur, a gin taster and a coroner. Peter’s wife Elizabeth tells me: “Peter and I love having films here and Peter likes to take a cameo role, a la Hitchcock, in the Pilcher films! Apart from meeting well known actors we find the crews fun and considerate to work with, once you get used to the endless cables and people in every

corner of the house. We feel a great sense of pride seeing the house and garden on screen as we have worked so hard to restore them. The extra publicity also helps greatly with our visitor numbers!" Bonython Manor and its gardens on the Lizard is another popular location for Rosamunde Pilcher films. Other Cornish Estates, little villages and isolated coves feature in many films and TV programmes. Director Tim Burton seems to like filming in Cornwall he used Antony House in East Cornwall to film part of his recent film, Alice in Wonderland, and has now come back to the Roseland to the tiny hamlet of Portholland to film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children with Samuel L. Jackson and Chris O’Dowd.

And let’s not forget the ongoing Poldark series, where the Cornish scenery was more than a match for a shirtless Aidan Turner. St Agnes Head, where iconic engine houses perch on the clifftops offering a silent reminder of Cornwall’s mining heyday, were a natural location choice for the filming of Poldark. The area doubles as Nampara Valley in the show. Some of the cliff scenes where filmed near Padstow and feature stunning views out over the Camel estuary. Aidan Turner and a hoard of other cast members descended on Church Cove to film nighttime ship wreck scenes. Porthgwarra cove sits at the heart of the St Aubyn Estates and was used to film some swimming scenes and landings; the filming took place over a week including one all night filming session. The rich mining heritage of the west Cornwall coast linking Botallack and Levan was used. Cameras rolled with Levant Mine playing the role of fictional Tressiders Rolling Mill while Owlas and Crowns near Botallack starred as Wheal Leisure. An absolute mecca for Poldark fans, of which there must be millions!

Then there is the sea itself from the beautiful BBC Coast series, to short wildlife films about basking sharks, dolphins, seals or the fabulous birdlife. And, of course, old sailing ships create a magical feeling on film; we were lucky enough to catch up with Shane McCarthy owner of Atlantic Productions and more recently Square Sail Ventures, which owns and runs Charlestown harbour, also featured in Poldark, and the gorgeous Phoenix, a 112 foot, two-masted brig; she was built in Denmark in 1929 and converted to an eighteenth century brig in 1996. Shane, who started in the entertainment industry in 1983 working with such iconic acts as U2, the Rolling Stones and Madonna tells me “Coming from West Cork in Ireland, it was a natural fit, the communities and beautiful coastline are very similar. I have always been involved in all things maritime: I love fishing and sailing. My

family is moving to Cornwall from Cork and the whole business will be based here. It’s not just about using Cornwall as a location there is a wealth of talent here, set construction, rigs, staging all anyone could need for a production we can provide in Cornwall – they really don’t need to bring film crew with them!” Shane has already introduced ‘green screen’ to Charlestown, a huge outdoor space for filming anything and putting the backdrop in later. He and his team sailed Phoenix up to London this winter for the premier of “In the Heart of the Sea”, Phoenix plays the whale ship Essex on which Moby Dick was based. Shane adds “Luckily we got back just before the storms hit! But it was fantastic; one of the most fabulous things I’ve done; sailing up the Thames at night; they even opened Tower Bridge for us! I really do believe that Cornwall has a great future in filming – it could be equally good for everyone.”

ornwall is often the destination of choice for UK holiday goers looking to escape the hustle and bustle, in search of that little slice of paradise. And it’s not hard to see why. But what do you do if you already live in Cornwall? The answer is simple – you head to the Isles of Scilly! My wife and I decided to do just that this spring. Scilly has all the qualities beloved of Cornwall, while carrying a rugged charm and unique identity entirely of its own. Having visited both Bryher and Tresco in recent years – and fallen in love on each occasion – we felt it was time to get to know St Martin’s. And what a decision that turned out to be! Combining the best bits of the other islands, St Martin’s is simply paradise found: hills, small woodlands, moorland, dramatic cliffs, long powdery white sand beaches, translucent turquoise seas and views that will take your breath away, leaving you standing there with your jaw on the floor. We have found our favourite island; a paradise just 28 miles from the Cornish coast, with a demanding travel time of 15 minutes! Arrival on the small jetty saw a welcome by three of the team from our hotel, Karma St Martin’s, who efficiently unloaded our luggage into the small van and drove it the 50 yards to the front door! Scott was

charming and welcoming – it felt as though we floated through the reception area to a soft brown leather armchair, welcomecocktail and a personal concierge’s guide to the hotel, dinner, breakfast and the island. To be honest, I didn’t hear a word as we sat in awe of the view. Once we had finished our drink Scott re-appeared as if by magic to show us to our room – attentive, but no pressure. The room was immaculate with intricate Balinese wallpapers selected by designer Tina Driscoll. Karma Group’s business started in Bali and India and is spreading to Europe with plans of luxury resorts to come. Our superior ocean view room was perfect – modern, comfortable and with every luxury you could hope for. My wife’s excitement at the mesmerising vista from the window said it all! With very few cars on the island, St Martin’s really is a world away from the mainland – a true idyll to escape it all. We timed our visit to coincide with the Walk Scilly Festival, making the most of the rare opportunity to get closer to nature and to ourselves. The festival is held every year in April, followed by a Walk Scilly Weekend in October. We enjoyed an enlightening foraging walk with expert Rachel Lambert, later being treated to a gourmet foraging

Check out Rachel’s book, Wild Food Foraging in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, for some fantastic ideas. Walking around St Martin’s is a real treat, whichever direction you choose to take – it’s just about big enough to lose yourself for the day but not big enough to get lost. We found plenty to explore over a few days on the island, meandering round the paths and trails to discover view after view after view. You can’t visit the island without making the trek to the iconic daymark erected north east of St Martin’s in 1683 by Thomas Ekins – it’s an awe-inspiring walk, with 360-degree views across Chapel Down. No countryside walk is complete without a pit stop in a proper traditional pub. Thankfully, we were lucky enough to stumble upon the Seven Stones Inn, a lovely stone building offering a good pint and quite possibly the best view from a pub garden anywhere in the UK. It was also a delight to meet Fay Page in her studio and workshop. Fay makes amazing silver charms and jewellery all inspired by the islands – worth a visit just to hear the tale of the whale on the beach and to see the subsequent charm she produced. On our travels, we also passed Churchtown Farm, home to Scilly Flowers – an inspiring industry now sending 90,000 bunches of flowers to Cornwall, the UK and beyond. Call

Of course, after each day exploring, you want nothing more than to retreat to the perfect sanctuary. With so much having made an impression on our minds, the bar had been set very high. Fortunately Karma St Martin’s exceeded every expectation. It’s the little touches that make the difference. Every guest is given a ‘wine card’ with £100 credit (billed to the room if used), allowing you to sample top wines from the cabinet, before choosing a whole bottle – an inspired idea, and the Pomerol gets my vote! Then there’s the record player linked to the Sonos system in the wine lounge, where

you can pick from the hotel’s owner John Spence’s personal vinyl collection. And, if you’re here for some rest and recuperation, then a treatment in the luxury spa will do just the trick. The hotel’s restaurant is the perfect spot to watch the sun go down, but it wasn’t just the view that impressed. A chef once told me that you can judge any restaurant based on whether they are brave enough to offer crème brulee on the menu. Well, Karma St Martin’s certainly rose to the challenge – the consistency, presentation, taste, enjoyment and pure indulgence of the dessert was symbolic of every single aspect of the experience on offer at Karma St Martin’s. It’s something that Ashley, the General Manager, and his young and delightful team are working hard to maintain and improve across the board. Obviously improving on perfection is very hard to do, but I think they might just do it. If you happen to be planning a wedding, I’m hard pressed to think of a more sublime location; the Honeymoon Suite, Tean Conference Suite, and the beach below make

the perfect trio for your big day – see our upcoming Romantic Scilly feature for the full review. Karma St Martin’s is a truly fantastic hotel – it exudes luxury, style and elegance all within the most spectacular of settings. It really needs to be visited to be believed – it is a little corner of heaven on the water's edge. Another favourite was Dibble and Grub on Porthcressa beach, St Mary’s. Here we savoured the last taste of paradise sat with a glass of sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio, a salad, wrap or sandwich (I love the lamb souvlaki in pitta), watching the sea and wishing we could stay forever. Inevitably, all good things must come to an end, and with heavy hearts but lighter feet, it was time to head home. Words really don’t do justice to the majesty of Scilly – it has to be experienced. Upon arrival, you feel all your stresses and strains quickly melting away quicker than the ice cubes in your freshly prepared cocktail. Our biggest conundrum now is finding time to plan our next visit!

Kit Johns is a young artist working from his studio in Cornwall. He captures the changing sea conditions on his canvases, from calm summer days to granite coloured skies in winter. The Lost Gardens of Heligan: 200 acres of history, mystery, intrigue and romance.

T

wenty-five years ago, Heligan’s historic gardens were unknown and unseen, lost under a tangle of weeds. It was only the chance discovery of a door in the ruins that led to the restoration of this once great estate. Today, the Lost Gardens have been put back where they belong: in pride of place among the finest gardens in Britain. Throughout the year, The Lost Gardens have a jam-packed schedule of events and captivating stories to enthral and entice their inter-generational audience, with this summer positively bursting at the seams! Heligan is home to the finest productive garden in Britain and is intensively cultivated throughout the year. The gardens and estate once met almost all the needs of the Tremayne family and their guests; with only fresh fish being sourced from the local harbour of Mevagissey. Today, over 300 varieties of mostly heritage fruit, vegetables and herbs are lovingly tended to supply the Heligan Kitchen with fresh, seasonal produce. Whilst most people talk in ‘food miles’, Heligan pride themselves in ‘food yards’, 157 yards from soil to plate to be exact; it doesn’t get much fresher than that!

June kicks off with a breath-taking explosion of colour, as The Lost Gardens of Heligan welcome back their mesmerising Field of Remembrance, taking the form of a boundless sea of delicate blood red, poppies. The spectacle was created on the Estate’s West Lawn, as a beacon to remind us of all those lost in the Great War and is set to bloom each summer until 2018, in line with the WWI centenary. It truly is a sight like no other and is one not to be missed. To complement this floral extravaganza a stunning display of indigo linseed flower will be in bloom in the adjacent Valentines Field, which is set to grace the senses throughout July and August, promising to be a real feast for the eyes, as well as celebrating one of Britain’s ‘lost’ crops. This June, Father’s Day is set to have more steam, beer and barbeque food than ever before with two jam-packed days instead of one. June also sees Heligan welcoming back Cornwall’s Miracle Theatre with a reputation for producing fresh and truthful adaptions, guaranteeing inspiring entertainment that can be enjoyed by all. The audience is invited to bring a picnic, share a glass of wine and sit back and enjoy the show in the magical atmosphere of

the Lost Gardens, set against the stunning backdrop of ancient rhododendrons. Following the theatre theme, this summer will see the irrepressible Kneehigh Theatre return to The Lost Gardens for their third consecutive year, with their award-winning, spirit-lifting nomadic theatre space, the Asylum. They bring with them a chance for friends old and new to enjoy world-class theatre, delicious food and drink, live music and a good old-fashioned Kneehigh knees-up. There have been numerous changes throughout Heligan over the past year and a few projects due to be completed, such as the reopening of The Ravine, set for July. Here the old watercourses have been re-established, returning the sound of running water to the Northern Gardens. New plantings along the rocky landscape are set to provide a real summer spectacle. The Jungle and The Lost Valley have been connected for the first time in Heligan’s history and linked with a new boardwalk, taking you through a wealth of new and exotic plantings. Gardeners’ Question Time will be a new feature this summer and is a unique opportunity to get your gardening questions answered by the Heligan Gardening Team. The team welcome gardening enthusiasts of all abilities to join them in the historic Melon Yard, for an informal and fun Q&A session with gardeners from both the Productive and Ornamental Gardening Teams.

to station We drop by The Lizard Lifeboat Station to discover more about the inspiring work of the RNLI.

A

rriving at The Lizard Lifeboat Station is like stumbling upon a top-secret base from Thunderbirds – in every sense. We’re privileged to climb into a small metal cage hugging the sheer cliff face and slowly descend 50 metres or so, to reach the ultra-high-tech, waveshaped building, cleverly concealed in the natural rocky Kilcobben cove below. Entering the building does nothing to dampen this feeling. Taking centre stage is a 31-ton, £2.7 million, state-of-the-art vessel, flanked by a veranda set over three levels, with uniformed personnel occasionally scurrying into various side rooms. The station’s huge metal doors open wide onto the waves below, framing a matchless view across the Channel and Celtic Sea. The imposing, self-righting, all-weather Tamar Class lifeboat sits poised on a purpose-built pneumatic pivot, waiting for the signal; ready to slide down the slipway into the depths below. The station’s very existence, in this remote, tricky-to-access location, is a testament to human endeavour. From the fundraising, to the design and build, right through to its operation – almost everything about it represents a huge feat of engineering, from the large scale, down to the tiniest detail. We’re here on a sublime Tuesday evening to witness its launch for a routine training exercise. Lifeboat Operations Manager Ned Nuzum greets us warmly, introducing us to Coxswain, Andrew Putt; Chairman, Dr Chris Cuff, and resident photographer Geoff Squibb. As he shows us around, Chris speaks with pride of the station and crew. “The kit has to be right – no corner cutting”, he says. “If we’re sending crews out to sea, often in challenging conditions, we need to provide them with the best kit possible.” The new station is the latest in a long line to have operated out of The Lizard over the years. Lifeboats of the peninsula still hold the RNLI’s record for the largest number of people rescued in a single operation. In March 1907, Lifeboat crews from Cadgwith, Coverack, Porthleven and The Lizard rowed out for a staggering 16-hours straight to rescue 456 of the passengers and crew aboard

the liner SS Suevic, having foundered on the rocks, close to Lizard Point. Both Chris and Ned are keen to emphasise that they don’t operate in isolation, highlighting the wider role of the RNLI. It’s just one of 237 lifeboat stations across the UK, and the 15 across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, all working tirelessly to keep our shores safe. And then there are the 200 or more RNLI lifeguarded beaches too. Being a charity, the RNLI relies critically on donations and the generosity of others, with fundraising playing an integral role. Neighbouring station Penlee, for example, is currently carrying out an appeal for funds towards the building of a new lifeboat station, updating the facilities and creating a visitor centre to highlight Penlee’s rich heritage. You can help by visiting: www.rnli-penleelifeboat.org.uk/appeal While traditionally crews have been made up largely of fishermen, these days the recruitment pool is surprisingly diverse, as Chris explains. “The RNLI is a ‘broad church’ organisation, encompassing members from all walks of life.” The flipside, however, is that new volunteers don’t necessarily have existing maritime experience to draw upon, necessitating intense training programmes and first-class facilities. The Lizard’s Coxswain, Andrew Putt, who has been with the RNLI for 31 years, explains the qualities needed in volunteers: “Commitment without recognition; someone who’s keen to get up in the middle of the night to go to the aid of others.” It’s an inclusive spirit – whether man or woman,

young or old, provided you can meet the challenging physical and emotional demands, you can step aboard. The Lizard needs seven crew afloat and six shore crew, in order to successfully launch, drawing on a rotation of around 37 operational volunteers. It’s an incredible sight watching the boat slide down into the water, each crew member well-drilled in their respective roles. Naturally, keeping up competency is essential – crew have to complete at least one exercise per month to ensure the entire roster is fully skilled, regardless of who is called upon on any given day. But there are so many ways to make a difference, other than those at the sharp edge. As Ned emphasises, “If you want to volunteer in any capacity, whether boat crew, shore crew, boathouse guide and more, the opportunity is there to get involved.” Of course, there’s another, very simple way in which we can all help: stay smart, respect the water, avoid needlessly dangerous situations, swim only on lifeguarded beaches, and follow the RNLI’s safety tips on their website. Our visit to the station is a small reminder of the wonderful work carried out by the RNLI, the resolve of those involved, and how important it is for us all to get behind this indispensable national institution. So, we catch up with Sharon Smith and Katie Robinson, the mother-daughter team behind Truro womenswear boutique Bishop Phillpott, who talk us through some of the key trends for the holiday season. Jumpsuits An outfit in one, we just love the ease of a jumpsuit. “They’re a great way to save space when packing to go away as they can be dressed up or down with ease”, says Katie. “This season we have a whole selection of jumpsuits, whether that be a jersey piece from Weekend by MaxMara, a cullotte jumpsuit from American Vintage or a more structured shirt style version.” Throw them on with some statement sandals for the day or take them up a notch and add heels and glam accessories for an evening look. Never too late to

change Many of us dream of a change of job and lifestyle, and it’s exactly what lovely, award-winning, garden designer Jo Midwinter has done.

catch up with Jo at her home overlooking the Camel estuary. If you’ve ever thought about employing a designer but always thought it might be rather intimidating then Jo’s the person for you! She is warm, easy-going and bubbling over with enthusiasm for her career and lifestyle. Conversation flows easily over mugs of tea in her colourful kitchen, her golden retriever, Harry, at our feet. Jo explains with a huge smile: “I loved gardening from an early age and enjoyed creating gardens for myself, family and

friends. I always had a strong feeling for space and shapes. The way you can create a space to make you feel more comfortable, energised or tranquil. I had also fallen in love with Cornwall – especially around Padstow. We kept coming back to Cornwall for family holidays. Little did I know that one day I would actually be working in garden design and finally living in Cornwall right next to the Camel estuary!” It wasn’t quite as simple as Jo makes it sound – there was a lot of determination involved in realising her dream. First in 2006, a move from their home in

Leamington Spa where Jo worked in IT; to live in Okehampton, when her husband was offered a job nearby. Then with her children settled and working, Jo, with a huge leap of faith, gave up work and enrolled on a garden design course at Duchy College, Rosewarne. “It was finally time to do what I had always wanted to do.” Jo says with another huge smile. “But we were still living in Okehampton – so it was quite a commitment to take on the drive to Rosewarne in north west Cornwall, let alone the added cost! But…” another grin from Jo, “life has a habit of stepping in sometimes and it turned out that two other people on the course lived nearby, so we not only shared the car journey and cost, but also became firm friends. It was a real God send!” It’s obvious that Jo thrived. In her final year at college she was joint winner of the Society of Garden Designers’ (SGD) national student of the year award. “It was wonderful!” Jo exclaims. “Just being at the awards ceremony; meeting and being in photos with designers whose work I had been studying!” Then, last year she won an SGD professional award for the garden of a contemporary coastal home in north Cornwall. I ask Jo about her philosophy on garden design. “When I approach a garden I think about how it makes you feel and how you want it to feel. I think about creating the places where it’s good to sit and reflect, places that will encourage people to spend time together, places where there is a sense

of discovery and excitement and how the garden flows between each element. I want to create a garden that will tempt my clients outside as often as possible! I like to try and find the unique character of a garden. It’s my job to raise possibilities for the garden. And I do love coastal gardens, using robust plants that can withstand whatever the weather has to throw at them. I never want to leave clients with problem plants! At the back of my mind is always… how are they going to manage this in the future?” In any spare time she has, Jo likes to go surfing, “though I’m not very good! My son surfs too and has moved from London to Newquay, so now I see them a lot, which is an added joy. I run and walk the Camel trail, and I love wildflowers so I photograph any I find, and blog about them. Oh, and we enjoy eating out, particularly in relaxed restaurants like Gilmores in Newquay for Mexican food, it’s a little shack by the golf course, or Scott and Babs at Retorrick Mill.” I can imagine strolling round my garden, buffeted by the westerlies, talking with Jo. I love her approach of simple but exciting; of making spaces that will add to people’s lives, and her warmth and enthusiasm for the life she has made.

THE MUSEUM OF WITCHCRAFT AND MAGIC The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic (MWM) in the picturesque village of Boscastle contains the world’s largest collection of magical and witchcraft-related objects and books. Festival spirit With festival season about to kick off, Amanda Winwood gives some tips on roughing it in style.

Honey is sweet in more ways than one! Enjoy this great hair treat whilst you relax in a post festival bath! To use: Take two tablespoons of runny honey and mix in one tablespoon of egg yolk and one tablespoon of organic olive oil. Massage into clean, damp hair. Leave for 20 minutes then rinse with warm water. The protein in the egg yolk will help replenish the keratin protein bonds that UV rays attack. Natural glossy hair!
